The science is not clear, but they sure want it to be.

And I bet if it is ever made clear and it doesn’t fit their thoughts they will still think the way they do and just call the science wrong.

I turned it off because of the commercials. A commercial break came on and ran for three or four spots. I went out on the deck and had a smoke. Came back and commercials were still running. The show finally reappeared and went through one number (good version, IMHO). Then cut back to commercials. Fuck it. If I wanted to see and hear a work of art cut into little pieces and sandwiched between ads for consumer goods, I’d watch a good movie on AMC.

Off-topic: I think “You’re a bully” is becoming the argument derailer du jour — a Facebook friend posted some screenshots of her neighborhood’s FB page where a minor/escalating argument about Snotty Kids Who Are Not Respectful Of Christian White Women already has accusations of bullying levied against people who don’t agree with the original poster.

So I guess we can look forward to Trump claiming someone on Twitter is bullying him sometime this week…

This makes me so angry.

This guy I know is overly controlling and emotionally abusive to his wife. As in a lot of cases like this, he often makes glowing social media posts talking about how wonderful his wife and family are. He posted a surupy sweet one for Easter earlier today.

His wife is good friends with my wife and we’ve both told her how we feel about the situation but she seems convinced she can work things out with him.

I have already made clear to their kids (we live a few houses down from one another) that they can always come here for anything no matter what.

I don’t to throw myself in the middle of this thing but I hate seeing a great woman held back and treated poorly by this guy.

I guess realistically there’s not much I can do.

Sacrifices such as Alabama cities now seceding from county school districts so they can re-segregate?

As I noted in a discussion yesterday on a local (well, statewide) discussion group:

All sorts of methods have been tried since Brown v Board of Education (1954) to re-segregate schools in Dixie.

The first method was simply delaying implementation, which is why I went to a segregated school in K and part of 1st grade. Integration was still being fought in the Eighties in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, when I was stationed there in the Eighties.

The second method was creating Protestant parochial schools which could discriminate against anyone they wished (and guess who they discriminate against). This method is augmented today by states (and attempts by conservatives at the Federal level) to funnel tax money into school vouchers which can be used in segregated private schools.

The third method was disestablishing public school districts (used in combination with the second method). This method was used by many counties in Virginia until the Federal government stepped in to enforce the requirement to maintain public schools.

The fourth method is to cut taxes collected for public schools, running them down. The poor (more likely to be minorities) will be stuck in the sub-standard public schools while the wealthy (more likely to be whites) will shuffle their children off to private schools (see segregation of religious run schools above). When you see a referendum or a bill for a voucher programme, particularly when it is promoted by a religious organisation, that is the purpose.

The fifth method is for a city to secede from a larger school district (being used now in Alabama). For now, the city in question in the article is blocked by a Federal district court from doing so. However, there will be appeals (which have to be paid from county or state funds, which then draw more money from the public school district in legal defence).

The thing that drives me, an actual Scientist, crazy is the way that pundits will blithely fasten onto something, and wave it around like it’s ABSOLUTE PROOF THEY’RE RIGHT!! Sullivan (and others) do this with a widely accepted estimate of the degree of heritability of IQ of 40-80%, claiming this proves Murray is right.

First ‘heritability’ is not JUST genetics. It’s also environment, because most children are raised by their own parents, so if a parent has a higher IQ, in part because their parents valued education, they’ll pass that on to their children.

Second, 40-80%? That’s a big fuckin’ error bar you got there. And that leaves 20-80% that ISN’T heritable.

So then people in the lesser than great neighborhoods should suffer the pain of their economics and never have their kids get a good shot of getting out of it?

That is the problem and is still a problem.

The State of Ohio was sued back in the mid 90s and found to be in the wrong on school funding and was told by the Ohio Supreme Court to fix it. And it is still messed up. The Republicans in control have kicked the can for 25 years or more.

And that didn’t even have anything to do with big city schools and busing.

It was New Lexington schools a small town in the hills of Ohio that had crumbling buildings and no tax base to do shit about it. They don’t have any good neighborhoods. It is poor all over.

Those kids suffer too?

Make you a deal. No busing. You get to stay in your neighborhood.

All schools no matter where in a state have to share the school taxes equally. No local taxes all state into a big pot to share.

When they started busing in Columbus public schools, I wrote up an idea about doing schools by grades, so everybody would get to stay near home at some point, and that kids would be with their same age peers—no bad influences from older kids on younger ones. It didn’t go very far…

I agree, fix schools. The town in question in Alabama noted above is in a district which just built a $55 million high school. Now the town wants to secede from the school district (taking the brand-new school with it leaving the aging school to the diverse populace while keeping the brand new facility for the all-white town).

The idea of pooling all school funding money to distribute equitably amongst students seems quite a bit better than re-instituting Jim Crow under the rubric of “forced busing.”

Most parents don’t have the training or knowledge to do an effective job of home schooling. If the parents have to work, that also limits their time.

The other idea discussed, that equal amounts should be spent per student throughout the state does not address the issue of poorer students actually requiring more resources to compensate for the fact that their parents are generally unable to provide real assistance to help them in their classes. Wealthier families can provide extra tutors and an educationally richer home life.

We all saw the movie Stand And deliver… Texts held back. No air conditioning and 100F+. Horrific bathrooms and careless teachers.

This is all too much like my other parent centric unpopular opinion-Home schooling. On one hand it’s how fundies screw over their kids and that’s abominable. OTOH imho it’s also how parents keep kids out of frighteningly bad schools and take on the burden themselves.

Wouldn’t work. Even if you “fixed” the schools, guess what? The segregation remains. And, as we’ve seen time and time again, what will happen with the segregation is that people will weasel their way in and start making things less than equal because the richer places don’t want to pay for the poorer ones. I give you Texas as an example, which has in it’s state constitution that kids are supposed to receive a “free and efficient” education. It’s the segregation that causes this.

Most parents don’t have the training or knowledge to do an effective job of home schooling. If the parents have to work, that also limits their time.

The other idea discussed, that equal amounts should be spent per student throughout the state does not address the issue of poorer students actually requiring more resources to compensate for the fact that their parents are generally unable to provide real assistance to help them in their classes. Wealthier families can provide extra tutors and an educationally richer home life.

As a former poor in money student who performed pretty far above average on a lot of topics and kind of average on others, they’re talking about money poor. Even for me, someone who graduated really high in my class, there were a number of things that would have been useful for me to have had, but cost money my parents didn’t, from English tutoring to help preparing for college. Had I had those things, I don’t think it would have taken me two tries to get through college.

You are right that the term poor is ambiguous: I meant those children without financial resources whose parents also cannot help them — who provide a chaotic home life and do not know how to give them a good start on learning by reading to them.

There it is. For all of my student life in the segregated South, from first grade through high school graduation, I saw the results of “separate but equal.” It was bullshit then. It’s bullshit now. And don’t even get me started on the “Christian academies” that exist all across the South, and other places, to this day, where almost all the black students are athletes who have been imported from as far away as Trinidad or Africa (hello, Evangel High), while an aspiring and smart black kid with an interest in mathematics wouldn’t even be bused in.

I don’t know how to fix it. Nobody does. But a start might be ironclad redistricting that feeds both black and white neighborhoods into the same school, no busing needed. And if necessary build new schools that better fit into the new districts. Reset as needed. And cut all public funding of private “academies.”

Oh well. Maybe in my next reincarnation.

Many poor students also receive a substandard education from very bad schools. Their A’s don’t show the same level of accomplishment as A’s in schools in wealthier communities. Their material is much less demanding and their teachers are often not as knowledgeable. It is unfair that these students were not offered the same level of education so that they can be be competitive.

It is also true that they often cannot afford to attend college and are instead forced to go into the work force prematurely to help their families.

That was sunk when I developed epilepsy and the VA declared me “unemployable” (before I got out of the Navy).

That in some ways is what Columbus Public Schools is trying to do. They are working to equalize buildings and equipment. They have also made some schools specialized academies on a public school level and parents can put their kids in those schools too. There is a Girls Prep Academy (middle school ages) in my neighborhood and it has kids from all over, not just this neighborhood.

They have schools that are stronger in science, arts, vocation and work prep.

My neighbors have two kids about two grades apart in age. The boy is mildly autistic and he gets to go to a school that is strong in his needs. He gets on the bus earlier than his sister that takes him to his school. His sister gets on another later bus to a Columbus School her parents picked for her.

I’m not sure how the city works out all the logistics. But they had to do something because 15 years ago they were really struggling. The whole city system was a mess.

One of my best lessons was I was when with a friend back when we were just into college. He had a white Ford Econoline. It had rust repair areas that he had in grey primer. He had one of those little pop-up vents in the rear area of the roof for air circulation. He was a fairly big guy (not fat) and had a white dude’s ‘fro. Pretty big and thick too. I’m a little more tall and narrow and my hair was longish and thick.

One day we were stopped at a traffic light and I looked ahead a couple of cars in the next lane and started to chuckle. He wondered what I was laughing at. I pointed and said “check it out.” He was looking and said “what?”

There was an identical white Ford Econoline van, white with almost identical grey paint areas. A vent on the roof and two guys in the front seats that looked very much like us.

I had to explain it to him and then he finally saw it. I thought about that for a long time and how it fit into my wanting to be in the arts. I needed to put what I saw into my art and use those observations to show people what they may not see.

Roseanne is a prime example of how hard it can be to separate the artist from the art. I mean, I loved the original run of Roseanne (at least until it got really odd with season nine) and I really want to like this go-around of it; all of the principal cast members that are still alive (RIP, Bev, Nana, and Mark) are there and looked like they’re pumped and, aside for the (really brief) overt political dialogue in the first episode, the rest of the first episode and the second episode were pretty good.

Then, Roseanne rears up her ugly head off-set on Twitter (again), that awful and obscene Heeb spread from ten years ago comes roaring back into the public eye (and rightfully so), and I am filled with dread and loathing at how much of a fucking human dumpster fire Roseanne is IRL.

There were 401 kids in my high school graduating class. 80 of then went to Pitt. Only 4 of them including me graduated in 4 years. Most of them flunked out. I realized what a plus it was to have read the Great Books of the Western World in the town library. Reading the books really opened my mind.

In cases like mine and my ex-husband certain things cannot be overlooked. We had the money to move into any neighborhood we wanted to move into, but when the neighbors saw that we were black, the boycotts began. I’ve shared the story here before about how all of the whites in a neighborhood cursed out the realtor who showed us the home, banded together and bought a house we wanted. This happened in the mid-1980s. They did it to keep us out, and it was all because we were black. I understand what you’re saying about your parents wanting to move into a better neighborhood with better schools to give you an advantage, but others want to do the same thing but are sometimes unable to do so. Many Americans would be surprised to learn that this kind of thing still happens to some Americans in the 21st Century, but it does.

There were 401 kids in my high school graduating class. 80 of then went to Pitt. Only 4 of them including me graduated in 4 years. Most of them flunked out. I realized what a plus it was to have read the Great Books of the Western World in the town library. Reading the books really opened my mind.

Words cannot express my glee at Kentucky’s teachers as a group standing up to the thieves in the capital. KY teachers span a wide range of political views, as anywhere, but the majority are pretty conservative (and religious). To see them standing up to the pols in Frankfort is really quite amazing. I hope people remember all this come election day, and vote those idiots out.

Spent the evening with a friend slurping wine, enjoying an herbal treat, and watching JC Superstar. WOW! There was nothing I didn’t love about it. I almost didn’t even mind a few of the (way too many) ad breaks so I could breathe again. The performances were intense.

I kept remembering when I first saw it - 1971, Peoria. I was at Bradley U and went to a production that was in a tent seating maybe 200. We sat on benches, straw scattered around the dirt floor and the very talented players and musicians often worked the whole tent. Very immersive and intimate experience. One of the best and most enjoyable theater experiences I’ve ever had. I thought this NBC production kind of captured that sense of closeness and intimacy.

World class mountain biking can be found on the second and third hermit, those trails are known as Second Gulch and Third Gulch. You used to be able to take dirt bikes up those trails, which resulted in bad erosion and degradation on and near the trails. It took several years of trail construction and decrees from B.L.M. to make those places what they are today, world class mountain biking trails.

The other day you asked why I was opposed to forced busing as a young man. I ran across the question later, thought to answer when I next saw you.

Parents that depend on public education for the kids pick neighborhoods to get to good schools or at least avoid the worst. They make sacrifices to make that happen. Taking that power of decision making away and imposing a social experiment like that on children combined to earn my deep and permanent opposition.

This was also at a time when Federal Housing subsidies were consistently and systematically denied to people living in majority black neighborhoods.

It was a flawed experiment, granted. But a necessary one.

Quite true, but that distinction is lost on many who want IQ tests to measure intelligence. One of my profs in graduate school used IQ tests as an example of reification — making something abstract (a score on an exam) into something real (that person’s “intelligence”). In addition, IQ tests can only measure a small section of a person’s native intelligence, and while they try to avoid it the test are inevitably culturally biased. And guess which culture is predominantly represented in IQ tests.

The Burt-Shockley-Murray school of reifying IQ tests just puts a thin scientific layer on innate prejudice and bigotry.

IQ is a valid and good measure of cognitive skills.

Intelligence is meaningful. This principle comes closest to being universally accepted by scientific psychologists. Every clinical psychology program in the country trains students in IQ testing, tens of thousands of IQ tests are given in schools every year, and papers in mainstream scientific journals routinely include information about intelligence, even when IQ is not the main object of study. On a more basic level, who doesn’t notice that some people have larger vocabularies than others, can solve harder math problems or organize more complex projects? IQ tests reliably assess these individual differences. Moreover, people who do well on one kind of ability test also tend to do well on others, a phenomenon that is referred to as g, as in general intelligence.

Buy a 1000/6000 King Waterstone ($30) or just the King1000 ($22) on Amazon. Go to Goodwill and ask to see their knife box for CHEAP kitchen blades (You might find a gem)
Most people over think angle and strokes. The knife will tell you. It’s all about dragging out a burr on one side of the primary edge and then the other, It’s VERY tactile. Muscle memory takes over very quickly and if you screw up, you have more blades to work on or start over.
I found an old forged Case XX butcher at goodwill yesterday like the one in the photo. I sharpened it tonite at work and shaved confetti into my buddy’s office. I told him he could have the knife. It’ll be a good hog cutter.

Oh yeah. I have shaved spots all over my arms from testing edges. I got to knock that shit off.

The main problem in the USA (since I cannot speak of the situation elsewhere) is the assumption by the right wingers and racists that IQ (which they say = intelligence) is predominantly determined by genetics, with the corollary being “some races are less intelligent than others, and we should just accept that.” The left wing meanwhile argues that IQ test scores also result from environmental and other non-genetic factors, and refute the RW argument that IQ (aka intelligence) is race-based. IQ scores are used as a kind of “proof” that certain genetics or certain environments are better than others, largely by people who have no background in psychology or even education, and who prefer to ignore the limitations of the tests.

Psychologists use IQ tests as diagnostic tools, and not necessarily as predictive measurements, AFAIK. They would not subscribe (I hope) to the simplistic argument that genetics determines IQ or that environment does, but would rather argue that “nature and nurture” are both involved in very complex ways, and it would be difficult to isolate one particular factor as a determiner of intelligence and/or a score on an IQ test.

Within American education, IQ tests at one time were used to track students, with high scorers tracked toward college prep and lower scorers tracked in vocational-technical curricula. Meanwhile, the typically lower scores among African-Americans were used as an excuse to keep them out of college prep classes, because educators believed in the predictive power of IQ tests and assumed such students would fail in college. Tracking was discarded by the 1970s, and nearly every student is now supposedly groomed for college — a policy I’m not sure I completely agree with — regardless of their IQ scores, though they may be divided into academic tracks (AP, honors, remedial and so on) that are as hard to break out of as the old college/vocational tracks were. And within those academic tracks, you will find relatively few African-American and Hispanic students assigned to AP and honors classes, because once again educators believe in the predictive power of intelligence testing.

IQ tests have been used as a bludgeon for decades to keep certain kinds of people — mostly PoC — away from other kinds of people — whites and to a lesser extent Asians — in classrooms. Further, those who want to keep the races separate and unequal, or want to justify unequal treatment of ethnic groups, or explain certain kinds of behavior by such groups use IQ test scores, as evidence for their claims.

The Bell Curve is the latest example of this extension of IQ tests from a psychological measurement to a broad determiner of public policy. Murray and his co-author do a credible job in the first half of the book explaining the scientific and statistical aspects of IQ tests, but then go off the rails into speculating how IQ scores determine a broad range of social, political and economic problems. The main conclusion is basically PoC will *always* score lower on IQ tests, therefore they are less intelligent, and therefore any (liberal) attempts to better their condition are doomed to fail. Needless to say, this conclusion sits very well among certain segments of the population who would like to justify their privileged positions.

So, yes, IQ tests are a useful diagnostic tool within psychology and provide doctors, families and schools with clues on how to raise and educate their kids. Past that point, their usefulness ends.

I would also reiterate my point that IQ tests may measure cognitive abilities, but they do not measure other abilities (sometimes called intelligences) at all. I went to an Ivy League university, where there were many people with high IQ scores, but in some ways were frightfully stupid. One such graduate is Andy Schlafly, the purveyor of Conservapedia, who is so obtuse in many subjects that one has to wonder how he gets dressed in the morning. (I was contemporary with his sister Liza, not with Andy.)

IQ tests similarly do not measure musical or artistic abilities, creativity, social skills, “common sense,” and a host of other factors necessary for success in life. They do however aid in assessing academic achievement and designing individualized education programs (IEPs) — IOW, school stuff.

An analogy is that one can test individual athletic skills, which include various and sometimes mutually exclusive skills ranging from weight lifting through activities such as sprinting, swimming to distance running, etc., and measure those objectively, but it is all but impossible to objectively test for one’s ability to contribute to a team sport.

I remember Phillip Rushton from my undergrad days causing a stir with some nonsensical argument about the larger the genitalia, the smaller the brain. I’m not an expert on the professional life of Maggie H, but my cursory examination of her career to date does not impress me as a former journalist. Yes, she has covered City Hall in New York, which one would assume had taught her something about the rough-and-tumble world of politics and the ability of politicians to ingratiate themselves with reporters seeking access by giving them just enough access to avoid an embarrassing coverage or questions down the road. Then she moved to Politico (oh boy) and then CNN and the Times. She’s 44 and has had a pretty meteoric rise in a 20-year career.

But there’s something missing. She’s not nearly cynical enough. She’s not apparently aware that she’s been hoodwinked by the very people she’s trying to cover. She seems still very naive for a 40-something reporter. Maybe it’s her privileged background that prevents her from seeing the seedy side of politics and how people like Trump manipulate her.

Compare her career with that of Helen Thomas, the daughter of immigrants who started as a copygirl and worked her way to be UPI’s White House correspondent. Thomas had no patience for White House bullshitting, and I doubt she would be as fawning as Maggie has with Trump. Thomas pissed off plenty of people, I am quite sure, but somehow she managed to maintain “access” by playing rough-and-tumble politics with the politicians, and earning their respect even if the begrudging kind.

Today’s “journalists” appear to want their cake and eat it too — to be nice to the politicians in hope of someone giving them some scoop or in hope of being anointed as some kind of oracle of the White House. Old school journalists expected nothing of the kind. They knew they had to play the same game as the politicians in order to do their job.

I really found myself just marveling that as much as we may declare Twitter a wretched hive of scum and villainy, it has become a powerful tool against the entrenched system of broadcast media and the dead-tree media, both of whom once used to be the gatekeepers who decided what information the public would be appraised of in “real time.” It really says a lot when we stop and consider how major historical events in just the past two generations might have played out differently if Twitter had been available.

I saw an opinion piece earlier that really explained why women like Maggie still find ready employment and guys like Kevin Williamson find editorial boards willing to hire them: the press remains in total denial of what the political landscape has become. They largely appeal to a slowly shrinking base of “intellectuals” who are convinced that men like Trump in American politics are an aberration and the two major parties in fact are run by competent men whose politics meet in a nebulous “middle” where compromise and governing can occur. Much like Dubya and the virulently racist “Tea Party” Republicans, the press rooms of America remain in total denial that one political party lost their fucking marbles and not only haven’t regained them, they actually believe it’s a mark of pride that they’re not making the effort to do so.

People don’t want to buy into his properties. His very name is devalued in NYC. He owns older buildings that are gold plated crap as compared to the newest skyscrapers that are not only taller and more prestigeous, but are far more tastefully designed with modern aesthetic.

Trump tower isn’t a premier property. There’s a half dozen towers on Billionaire’s Row (57th Street) that have more cachet.

There’s the Robert AM Stern building in Lower Manhattan that is one of the new generation of residential/commercial hotels with superluxury appointments.

Trump’s left in the cold - mostly because he can’t afford to build new himself. He’s stuck having to plaster his name on other projects and with his name synonymous with a dumpster fire, it’s not going to happen.

They largely appeal to a slowly shrinking base of “intellectuals” who are convinced that men like Trump in American politics are an aberration and the two major parties in fact are run by competent men whose politics meet in a nebulous “middle” where compromise and governing can occur. Much like Dubya and the virulently racist “Tea Party” Republicans, the press rooms of America remain in total denial that one political party lost their fucking marbles and not only haven’t regained them, they actually believe it’s a mark of pride that they’re not making the effort to do so.

The other day conservative Nicole Wallace had a panel on her MSNBC show made up of conservatives and liberals and the show started out talking about the Ingraham and Hogg back and forth. Then the whole show turned into a complete Fox News bash fest with everyone agreeing Fox is a problem.

There may be some hope yet. There are conservatives that realize their plight. None of them are currently in office is the problem and if there are a couple old time moderate Republicans they are operating undercover.

The problem overall in America is no one is taking a tough righteous stand.

And then along comes the Parkland Fla. students.

Their wagon is big and has plenty of room to jump on and it seems powerful enough for others to attach theirs to it and all head out to fix this mess.

And I can only speak for my own view. I didn’t like the idea of Nicole Wallace having a show on MSNBC. I have been pleasantly surprised and now try to catch her show because she is a conservative, but she seems to have her head on straight and runs a pretty good and informative show. She is not kind to the current state of the G.O.P.

If I would have said I will never watch her, she’s one of those, I would have missed out on some pretty good debate and reporting. She is much better than Chuck Todd. And Ari Melber is great IMO. So poor Chuck Todd is caught in the middle and I can easily go right past him. I bet their rating even show that, but I don’t know, just a feeling.

I may be perhaps biased as an old school journalist who eschewed the whole idea of getting a J degree, but I believe that journalism today has become too skewed toward the intellectual aspect of coverage and away from the “man on the street” aspect that older journalists who worked their way up from copy boys and girls had pursued. Nowadays, a master’s degree in journalism or a bachelor’s and some connection to a media person (like Maggie’s dad) is necessary to gain access to even a medium-sized newsroom, or if you’re patient, a slow crawl up from a local media outlet to larger ones. Even so, employers (or HR depts) seem more impressed with degrees than with actual feet on the ground reporting and writing. Journalism became gentrified, so to speak.

Thus, people like Haberman seem ill-equipped to deal with knife-in-your-back politics, or nutjobs who don’t play by the rules they may have learned in their communication classes, or the fact that one political party seems allergic to facts and reality. Moreover, they also seem to have abandoned the unofficial role of the media as the Fourth Estate (or the Four Branch) of government, and seem more interested in “getting along” with the politicians in order to pump out fluff pieces that skirt the real failures of government right now.

which she attacked the church for orchestrating a massive cover-up. The war of
words continued into February. Following the identification of Stompie Seipei’s
body, several members of the MUFC, including Mr Jerry Richardson, were

On Saturday, power corporation FirstEnergy placed its coal and nuclear generation units under chapter 11 bankruptcy. Although coal and nuclear plants across the country have struggled to compete with the low prices of natural gas, FirstEnergy’s filing is unique because it stands to take on a political dimension. Just two days before FirstEnergy’s bankruptcy filing, the company petitioned the Department of Energy (DOE) for an emergency bailout, citing concerns about reliability.

The petition could reinvigorate a debate started by Energy Secretary Rick Perry, who proposed a rule last year to change how coal and nuclear plants are compensated for their power. The rule was denied by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which said that there was not enough evidence to justify changing how coal and nuclear are compensated.

FirstEnergy disparaged FERC’s decision in its Thursday petition (PDF), claiming that “as a result of FERC’s and the RTO’s [Regional Transmission Organization’s] failure to address this crisis, swift and decisive action is needed now to address this imminent loss of nuclear and coal-fired baseload generation and the threat to the electric grid that this loss poses” (emphasis FirstEnergy’s).

The Trump administration campaigned on bringing back coal, despite the fact that it’s a major contributor to climate change. Trump and his appointees have repeated misinformation about climate change science throughout their time in office. But coal’s struggles at this point have little to do with climate change regulation from the government and more to do with higher costs than natural gas in many places around the country. That has left coal companies to argue that their electricity is more reliable and therefore more valuable than other forms of electricity.

Amazon took advantage of some tax loopholes when it got started, namely that, in a lot of states, people were supposed to pay sales taxes to their states if the company did not collect them. Now, though, Amazon collects and pays taxes in most states. Not having stores has allowed them to minimize costs that physical stores don’t. But I think the biggest reason Amazon is doing so well is that you can get things through their site that you can’t always get in a store. I haven’t found a physical store that carries Harold & Maude.

Edit: But, I meant to add, that the attacks on Amazon are solely about WaPo’s investigating Trump.

This. We live out in the boondocks, and I’m a book fanatic. Right now, the nearest full-service bookstore is two hours away in Amarillo. When Barnes & Noble closes next year, the closest will be in either Dallas, OKC, or Albuquerque. Without Amazon, I wouldn’t have access to any books outside of the romance bestsellers at the grocery store.

Amazon has entered into deals to pay sales tax in many states. They also have to pay tax because of a new physical presence (owning Whole Foods could potentially establish nexus for sales tax purposes since the stores also allow customers to pick up Amazon purchases).

Thing is that the Wayfair case could end up making everyone subject to sales tax online by changing how states are to treat nexus (the relationship between the business and the state rises to a level that means the state can impose tax liabilities).

I bought some relays that were actually purchased from a third party company, not Amazon, though the website was amazon.com. I am curious how many businesses see an uptick in sales because they use Amazon’s site as their front end.

And yes, I realize their could be issues if Amazon were to try to take more control.

I was at the White House in December, and that the display in the entry foyer (from the visitor entrance) wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be. The rest of the decorations throughout the public spaces was quite traditional.

Trump is picking winners/losers based on his whims as president.

That’s not how any of this is done.

It’s also instructive that the GOP would have gone absolutely batshit insane had Obama or Clinton or anyone else done anything even approaching this. Trump is targeting his political enemies and their companies and trying to destroy their value or otherwise undermining US companies (which also increases the chances someone else might try to wrest control over them if the values drop sufficiently).

Well, markets usually discount/ignore these sort of attacks: Trump’s blatherings might have some short-term negative effects, but it’s really unlikely he can affect their business (vs. stock value) - unless he can cheerlead a nationwide boycott or whatever. And of course, that would probably boost AZA’s sales, just out of spite….

Dow down 719 points to 23,383 at 2:00 - this is about the “floor” level for the index in recent weeks: if it doesn’t rebound from here (more-or-less), then we’ll know it’s SHTF time….

I would assume a lot; the Dow, S&P and Nasdaq are all down about 3%. I’m guessing the danger of a trade war with China, possible cancellation of NAFTA and rising interest rates are all having an effect.

I don’t think most people pay a lot of attention to the market-or the funds they are invested in. If they did, they wouldn’t be invested in high-load funds, for starters.

I also think that the market has been overvalued, which sucks if you invested when it was at its highest, but like when the housing bubble burst, your condo really wasn’t worth that peak price, and neither was your portfolio. Now stocks may go back up, but then again it could take a while.

Would they have done so with LI outing herself as being a person whose behavior who was not socially acceptable? Perhaps if she had refrained from using social media to make a statement publicly… and yet, whose fault is that? Anyone hold a gun to her head and force her to pile onto Hogg? Couldn’t she read the numbers knowing that the overwhelming number of Americans, Republicans included were in favor of this position.
