Trump Official Wants To Put Tight Leash On Consumer Watchdog Agency

The Trump administration will ask Congress to make drastic changes to weaken the independence of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, NPR has learned.

Sources familiar with the matter tell NPR that the CFPB’s interim director, Mick Mulvaney, will ask lawmakers to restructure the bureau in his upcoming semi-annual report to Congress. The sources asked not to be named, because they aren’t authorized to speak on the matter. The bureau officially announced the move Monday afternoon, after this story first published.

Mulvaney wants to give Congress control over the CFPB’s budget and to require that any major new rules created by the bureau to protect consumers be approved by Congress before they can go into effect.

He will also ask Congress to give the president more power over the bureau’s director, according to the sources. These changes would be a major shift for the bureau, which was designed to be independent from political influence — effectively placing the consumer watchdog on a short leash under the direct control of Congress and the White House.

Literally appointed to destroy the entire agency from within. That was Mulvaney’s purpose from the start

Check this video out. Stephanie Ruhle was sitting in for Chuck “Meat” Todd this afternoon and had Richard Painter and Hugh “Goofy” Hewitt on talking about EPS head Scott Pruitt. It broke out in a heated discussion then and outright shouting match. It’s a good thing they were both in remote locations. I think Painter was ready to jump through the TV and punch goofy Hewitt. Hewitt is such a hard wingnut to take.

We should use this to find a way to drive news stations to report two things:
1. National Politics
2. Local news.

What I would like to see less reported on is other city’s news, namely the murder in tiny town X or the corruption in City Not-Mine. The reason for this is that reporting what happens in every freakin’ town tends to make things like crime seem far worse than they are. To me, it’s the biggest reason crime rates are down yet everyone thinks that crime is worse than ever.

Naaah, more like “devolution”, though I’m not sure it’s anything particularly new: a large percentage of “journalism” has always had a Corporate Head Office Master to have to consider - especially when it comes to political orientation (Hearst Papers come to mind - or the old Chicago Tribune). I agree that the Sinclair thing is fucked up, mainly as they also seem to push religious “viewpoints” along with the politics - but the main difference nowadays seem to be that - unlike the Good Old Days when there were often competing outlets (most sizable towns might have a “Republican” paper and a “Democratic” one), today there doesn’t seem to be much media choice in a lot of places. Outside of the Internet, of course.

Late in his presidency, not long before he decided not to run again, LBJ is reported to have told a general who wanted yet another grotesque expansion of the Vietnam War, “That’s fine, general, but if I do that, how long do you think it will take half a million Americans to come over those walls out there and lynch their president?”

In Madison it would be more like, “OK, Sinclair, how long do you think it will take forty thousand really pissed-off college students to shred your station like ropa vieja?”

If he did say it, I would think it was in the context of earlier generations of schoolkids never had to face ARs like the students in Parkland did.

Which would be very true.

Plus to me using a picture of troops is itself strange. Comparing war to school makes the student’s point. Their schools are turning into war zones.

Well, look at the example they feel obligated to follow…

I heard an economist on NPR this afternoon stating that China is the market for 17% of the US’ pork exports (who knew?) - and that they’re an even bigger part of market for bulk grains like corn or soybeans. The big problem is that the Chinese aren’t vitally dependent on said imports, and slapping a retaliatory tariff on them is going to hurt us a lot more than it will them. Typical of Trump: he wants to ramp up a trade war, but ignores the fact that agricultural products are one of our few remaining export products: and those farmers aren’t going to forget who it was that fucked up their overseas sales. And it’s unlikely ragging on “MS-13” is going to change their minds….

We’ll have to see, but strikes are one of the few tools you can use to get the attention of a business or government.

They didn’t think he’d ever do anything that would have a negative impact on them, but now they see might be able to begin to see that they were wrong. I read the article at the link in which the farmer is talking about the effect the Chinese tariffs are having on the value of his hogs. The guy’s already losing more money than he can afford to lose. I feel sorry for him because he says he bought his farm when he was very young. The governor is talking about how she “doesn’t agree with Trump” on this issue and is willing to “take him on.” It’s strange that many conservatives don’t care about certain things until those things affect them.
