Just heard Ali Velshi close out his MSNBC show explaining the up and down today. Apparently Larry Kudlow made a statement somewhere saying there is a good chance Trump will not go forward with the tariffs and that reversed the trend for the day.

However, what is strange is the video posted in the last thread where Kudlow was saying to Fox be patient this will all work out and there will be a pot of gold at the rainbow’s end.

Mixed messages seems to be the Trump way. It also shows no one knows what they are saying and doing.

Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, assemblages, or rebellion make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any state or territory, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any state. Interference with State and Federal law. The President, by using the militia or the armed forces, or both, or by any other means, shall take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress, in a state, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy.

Air and Army National Guard. Air and Army National Guard can specifically be called into Federal service in case of invasion, rebellion, or inability to execute Federal law with active forces.

Maybe he can get away with that last one. But I’m not sure any argument under any of these rules would hold up in court for more than 10 minutes.

While some right-wing outlets were working to portray the shooter as anything but conservative, the fringes of far-right were using the shooting to reinforce their ongoing narrative that media outlets reporting on the shooting had a secret agenda to negatively portray white people.

Conservative firebrand Ann Coulter said that she expected that The New York Times would identify the shooter as a “white Iranian,” keeping in line with her accusations of anti-white bias in mainstream news coverage:

That statement could not be clearer that Mueller can examine whether a member of the Trump campaign and the Russians were “colluding,” and thus working together “in violation of United States law.”

The laymen’s term is collusion. The legal term (which means what everyone thinks “collusion” means) is conspiracy. So as much as they want to claim that collusion isn’t a crime, that’s fine, but you can be criminally liable for conspiracy to commit a crime. And whether you colluded or conspired, it doesn’t matter, you’re going to end up in federal prison.

What kind of range and charge times are you dealing with so far?

We’ve set the charge limit to 90% to maximize battery life and a fill up puts a conservative range of like 285 miles estimated. Got it down to about 150 and it filled back up in 40 minutes at the Supercharger station in Westlake Village. We sat down at a deli and ate some sandwiches while monitoring the charge progress on my iPod Touch.

He’s set up Time of Use (TOU-D) billing with SCE so all power usage between 10pm to 8am is ultra low tier, 8am to 2pm and 8pm to 10pm are low tier, and 2pm to 8pm are peak. His plan in the summer is to avoid paying the peak rate as much as possible by getting the condo nice and cold with AC before 2pm and then coast until 8pm. Towards that goal he’s also going to get a consult on adding more insulation to the attic.

We sat down at a deli and ate some sandwiches while monitoring the charge progress on my iPod Touch.

He’s set up Time of Use (TOU-D) billing with SCE so all power usage between 10pm to 8am is ultra low tier, 8am to 2pm and 8pm to 10pm are low tier, and 2pm to 8pm are peak. His plan in the summer is to avoid paying the peak rate as much as possible by getting the condo nice and cold with AC before 2pm and then coast until 8pm. Towards that goal he’s also going to get a consult on adding more insulation to the attic.

That 40 minute charge time is still a killer for me. But I can see how it’d be useful for local driving.

A few years back, people pooh-poohed the idea of BEVs as primary vehicles because the range was so small and it took so long to recharge. The convenience gap between BEVs and internal combustion is shrinking dramatically.

Never depend on a new technology remaining clunky and inconvenient.

I’m back working in the family business (construction) and a good deal of my day is spent driving, putting over 100 miles on the little Ford Fusion hybrid I drive for work in one day is pretty standard (getting over five hundred miles per tank I’m still filling up once a week or so). So depending on how realistic that top range is, it probably still wouldn’t work for me.

As for what I like to drive, I still prefer the old cars with manual transmissions, but I’m a dinosaur like that.

You can always charge it at home overnight and it’ll be full in the morning. Dad had a 240 volt plug installed in his garage, but since he got in on the tail end of the free supercharging for life promotion he’s going to use that as much as possible. But yeah, it’s not the ideal car if you’re regularly going over 300 miles per day and don’t want to wait an hour and a half for a near empty to full charge at the supercharger station.

Apparently less than I would have thought. Someone on NPR this morning was saying she had talked to several Iowa farmers and one was angry at Trump, but the others just thought American ag. is so superior that everything will work out OK in the end.

The N1 was just a few decades (and a lot of engineering) too early; the Falcon Heavy, with 27 engines [3 “cores”, 9 engines per “core”], flew flawlessly just in the past month or so.

I think that last sentence may have a bit of a cart:horse problem. The minivan and the car-based SUV displaced the station wagon as the family vehicle of choice, rather than filling the gap left by SWs going away.

Also worth noting that the big American family station wagon got much the same gas mileage as the worst of the SUVs.

It seems to me that blaming Detroit for cutting subcompacts to focus on SUVs ignores the role of demand in product development decisions. They did that because nobody was buying the subcompacts, which meant they couldn’t charge enough to make much profit on each. OTOH, SUVs are in demand, which means they can charge more for each one. And if, say, Ford decided they’d be socially responsible and not make the Lincoln Navigator and the Ford Excursion and Expedition, there are other carmakers who’d be only too happy to sell Suburbans and Durangos to the disappointed Ford customers.

That’s why The Market cannot be relied on to act in a socially responsible way. That’s where regulation comes in.

In 2017, Border Patrol apprehended about 360,000 illegal immigrants or about 18 per Border Patrol agents over the entire year, which works out to one apprehension per Border Patrol agents every 20 days. By that measure, Border Patrol agents in 1954 individually apprehended an average of 53 times as many illegal immigrants as Border Patrol agents did in 2017. If the current caravan makes it to the United States border, it would add about a single day’s worth of apprehensions.

I drive a Prius. Only four people can fit in my car, including the driver. I can squeeze a 5th in the back but no one will be comfortable. I have two kids and driving carpool doesn’t work. No room.

I live in a lock-off mother-in-law apartment in a five bedroom house, $750/month which is dirt fucking cheap around these parts (it helps I’ve known the owners of the house since I was seven years old). It’s not uncommon to see three bedroom townhomes rent for $4000/month. One bedroom apartments closer to the ski areas can command two grand a month easily. And the management at the ski areas/restaurants/schools/health care facilities wonder why turnover is 100% in almost all departments.

We had a Dodge Grand Caravan for years, which is the same as the Chrysler Town & Country. It was great, and had enough room for 2 adults and 3 kids + two friends. The Grand Caravan was slightly longer than the plain Caravan, which gave more space in the trunk. It was worth it. The new versions come with a built-in vacuum, which seems like a great idea to me.

I’m not sure I really have much of a preference. We didn’t have many problems until the end of life. I think they’re all pretty good now.

Edit: I do recommend captain’s chairs in the middle rather than a bench seat. It makes getting in and out a whole lot easier.
