Listening to KCRW right now; the anti-immigation hysteria being stirred up by Fox, Trump and the usual gang of idiots is leading the fearful RWNJ sheep to show up at Orange County city council meetings, screaming about “taking our country back.”

The appeal of the modern GOP is racism & hatred of “the other.” Full stop.

The only reason people vote for the GOP is to punish and hurt people of color, LGBT, women, kids who don’t sufficiently hump gunz, etc.

And this will be the Ebola of this election, because “taking care of immigrants in your country, because you were once one” is no longer something a Christian nation follows.

So the Dow is up for the day. This will not teach Trump any lessons.

Just heard Ali Velshi close out his MSNBC show explaining the up and down today. Apparently Larry Kudlow made a statement somewhere saying there is a good chance Trump will not go forward with the tariffs and that reversed the trend for the day.

However, what is strange is the video posted in the last thread where Kudlow was saying to Fox be patient this will all work out and there will be a pot of gold at the rainbow’s end.

Mixed messages seems to be the Trump way. It also shows no one knows what they are saying and doing.

In light of the day, week, month and last year plus…this song from one of my favorite bands of the 70s speaks to Trump and all his gang in the White House, etc. Some of you may remember the Three Dog Night version. It is an Argent tune, and I love the mystery of their original version recording. It goes to Trump’s base.

Argent - Liar [Original Version] (1970)

Argent - Liar Lyrics
I won’t ever leave, you want me to stay
Nothing you can do that could turn me away
Hanging on anyway, believing the things you say
Being a fool

You’ve taken my life, so take my soul
That’s what you said and I believed it all
I want to be with you as long as you want me to
But don’t move away

Ain’t that what you said?
Ain’t that what you said?
Ain’t that what you said?

Liar, liar, liar

May I see no light, may I see no day
I may be leaving but you want me to stay
You can believe in me, I won’t be leaving
I won’t let you go

Ain’t that what you said?
Ain’t that what you said?
Ain’t that what you said?

Liar, liar, liar

You’ve taken my life, so take my soul
That’s what you said but who are we to know
I want to be with you as long as you want me to
So don’t move away

Ain’t that what you said?
Ain’t that what you said?
Ain’t that what you said?

Liar, liar, liar

Doesn’t matter, because Trump just federalize the CANG (and any other NGs from states not down with his program).

Whether or not he can legally do so, given the circumstances, that’s a whole ‘nother kettle of fish.

re: #41 TedStriker

Doesn’t matter if Trump federalizes them.

Whether or not he can legally do so, given the circumstances, that’s a whole ‘nother kettle of fish.

Per wikipedia, US Code allows federalization in these circumstances:

Voluntary Order to Active Duty. Federalized with the soldier’s or airman’s consent and the consent of their Governor.

Partial Mobilization. In time of national emergency declared by the President for any unit or any member for not more than 24 consecutive months.

Presidential Reserve Call Up. When the President determines that it is necessary to augment the active forces for any operational mission for any unit or any member for not more than 270 days.

Federal Aid for State Governments. Whenever an insurrection occurs in any state against its government, the President may, upon the request of its legislature or of its governor call into Federal service such of the militia of the other states. This is a statutory exception to the PCA

Use of Militia and Armed Forces to Enforce Federal Authority. Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, assemblages, or rebellion make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any state or territory, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any state. This is another statutory exception to the PCA.

Interference with State and Federal law. The President, by using the militia or the armed forces, or both, or by any other means, shall take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress, in a state, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy.

Air and Army National Guard. Air and Army National Guard can specifically be called into Federal service in case of invasion, rebellion, or inability to execute Federal law with active forces.

Maybe he can get away with that last one. But I’m not sure any argument under any of these rules would hold up in court for more than 10 minutes.

Completely predictable but needs to be documented anyway:

Right Wing Watch: These Are Some Of The Worst Right-Wing Reactions To The Shooting At YouTube HQ

Right-wing pundits, many of whom have spent the last few months intensifying their rhetoric against YouTube’s enforcement of community guideline policies, claimed that the shooter was a “left-wing” activist because she had reportedly posted about animal rights and veganism on social media. CRTV host Steven Crowder claimed in a since-deleted tweet that the shooter was a “militant leftist PETA activist.” The Gateway Pundit identified her as a “far left protester.” The white nationalist outlet Red Ice dedicated an entire video to claiming that the shooter was a “very advanced, interesting version of an SJW.”

While some right-wing outlets were working to portray the shooter as anything but conservative, the fringes of far-right were using the shooting to reinforce their ongoing narrative that media outlets reporting on the shooting had a secret agenda to negatively portray white people.

Conservative firebrand Ann Coulter said that she expected that The New York Times would identify the shooter as a “white Iranian,” keeping in line with her accusations of anti-white bias in mainstream news coverage:

One now-viral claim is that CNN et al lightened the shooter’s image to make her look “more white.”

That statement could not be clearer that Mueller can examine whether a member of the Trump campaign and the Russians were “colluding,” and thus working together “in violation of United States law.”

The laymen’s term is collusion. The legal term (which means what everyone thinks “collusion” means) is conspiracy. So as much as they want to claim that collusion isn’t a crime, that’s fine, but you can be criminally liable for conspiracy to commit a crime. And whether you colluded or conspired, it doesn’t matter, you’re going to end up in federal prison.

I think Iranians/Persians fall into the same trap that a lot of Latinos fall into - too many that are “too dark” for the white supremacists to accept as their own.

Personally, I can’t wait until the white supremacists decide that Italians and the Irish no longer count as white because they don’t think they need them anymore.

We’ve set the charge limit to 90% to maximize battery life and a fill up puts a conservative range of like 285 miles estimated. Got it down to about 150 and it filled back up in 40 minutes at the Supercharger station in Westlake Village. We sat down at a deli and ate some sandwiches while monitoring the charge progress on my iPod Touch.

He’s set up Time of Use (TOU-D) billing with SCE so all power usage between 10pm to 8am is ultra low tier, 8am to 2pm and 8pm to 10pm are low tier, and 2pm to 8pm are peak. His plan in the summer is to avoid paying the peak rate as much as possible by getting the condo nice and cold with AC before 2pm and then coast until 8pm. Towards that goal he’s also going to get a consult on adding more insulation to the attic.

That 40 minute charge time is still a killer for me. But I can see how it’d be useful for local driving.

285 mile range would cover all the driving I’ve done for most of the last 4-5 years. The 40 minute supercharge thing is pretty amazing, I have to say. A few years back, people pooh-poohed the idea of BEVs as primary vehicles because the range was so small and it took so long to recharge. The convenience gap between BEVs and internal combustion is shrinking dramatically.

Never depend on a new technology remaining clunky and inconvenient.

Oh, I know that it will keep improving. I’m back working in the family business (construction) and a good deal of my day is spent driving, putting over 100 miles on the little Ford Fusion hybrid I drive for work in one day is pretty standard (getting over five hundred miles per tank I’m still filling up once a week or so). So depending on how realistic that top range is, it probably still wouldn’t work for me.

As for what I like to drive, I still prefer the old cars with manual transmissions, but I’m a dinosaur like that.

You can always charge it at home overnight and it’ll be full in the morning. Dad had a 240 volt plug installed in his garage, but since he got in on the tail end of the free supercharging for life promotion he’s going to use that as much as possible. But yeah, it’s not the ideal car if you’re regularly going over 300 miles per day and don’t want to wait an hour and a half for a near empty to full charge at the supercharger station.

Do not expect self-reflection with such great narcissism.

Anyway, I wonder how many in the National Guard actually voted for Trump?

This gets me back to Grassley whining about the need for government relief from the Chinese tariffs.

Trump carried rural central US, signficantly. In the population centers of states like Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Trump did not do so well. But in the rural counties he did.

Now, their choice has come back to bite them in the ass.

Is there any reflection on the part of rural America, over their choice for President?

Apparently less than I would have thought. Someone on NPR this morning was saying she had talked to several Iowa farmers and one was angry at Trump, but the others just thought American ag. is so superior that everything will work out OK in the end.

Carper also asked the inspector general to look into the purpose of Pruitt’s trip, citing concern that natural gas exports are not part of EPA’s mission to “protect human health and the environment.”

If you’ve got more than two kids, and they do any sort of activities, it seems like it’d be hard to get by with a sub-compact car. I think one of the reasons SUVs took off in this country is because station wagons and other family type vehicles were phased out.

I think that last sentence may have a bit of a cart:horse problem. The minivan and the car-based SUV displaced the station wagon as the family vehicle of choice, rather than filling the gap left by SWs going away.

Also worth noting that the big American family station wagon got much the same gas mileage as the worst of the SUVs.

Any Lizards planning to go to the Denver WonketteFest at the Wynkoop Brewery at six tonight?
And if yes, how do we recognize each other? I’m a fat old white lady with a cane, in a blue baseball cap covered with buttons. There is a small metal toad pin on the front of said hat, but no lizards unless the spousal unit can find one amongst his impressive array of hat pins. (He thinks he might have a horny toad in there somewhere, being Texan.)

My arrival is dependent on Denver traffic, but the event is supposed to go from 6-8 and will probably get livelier as the inebriation level rises.

Say hi to Rebecca & Shy!! Take a photo with wonkette baby!

Have fun!

It seems to me that blaming Detroit for cutting subcompacts to focus on SUVs ignores the role of demand in product development decisions. They did that because nobody was buying the subcompacts, which meant they couldn’t charge enough to make much profit on each. OTOH, SUVs are in demand, which means they can charge more for each one. And if, say, Ford decided they’d be socially responsible and not make the Lincoln Navigator and the Ford Excursion and Expedition, there are other carmakers who’d be only too happy to sell Suburbans and Durangos to the disappointed Ford customers.

That’s why The Market cannot be relied on to act in a socially responsible way. That’s where regulation comes in.

A breakdown of the border idiocy per the Cato Institute via Jennifer Rubin (bolding mine):

President Trump has ordered troops to the border to help the current number of 19,437 Border Patrol agents apprehend the roughly 1,000 Central American asylum seekers who are slowly making their way north (but probably won’t make it all the way to the border). There are currently about 19 Border Patrol agents for each Central American asylum-seeker in this caravan. In 2017, Border Patrol apprehended about 360,000 illegal immigrants or about 18 per Border Patrol agents over the entire year, which works out to one apprehension per Border Patrol agents every 20 days. By that measure, Border Patrol agents in 1954 individually apprehended an average of 53 times as many illegal immigrants as Border Patrol agents did in 2017. If the current caravan makes it to the United States border, it would add about a single day’s worth of apprehensions.

Charlie Pierce, right on the money as usual:

The Version of Martin Luther King the White House Is Peddling Is a Crime Against History

…White Martin is an offense against history. It is a crime against memory. And to have this White House, and this president*, even mention the name of Martin Luther King, Jr. in public is to watch that crime unfold in broad fcking daylight. Just shut up, OK? Shut your bloody gobs about him. You don’t have the right.

…The 50th anniversary of his murder comes at a propitious time. His true spirit is walking the streets again. It walks with the people who march against murder under color of law. His true spirit walks with the teachers who march for the means to teach children properly. He walks with the schoolchildren who demand that something be done about this country’s insane affection for its firearms. He walked with everyone who marched on the day after this ridiculous president* was born. He did not walk with Sarah Huckabee Sanders to the podium in this White House for the purposes of profaning his memory. Even in death, he’s smarter than that.

I live in a lock-off mother-in-law apartment in a five bedroom house, $750/month which is dirt fucking cheap around these parts (it helps I’ve known the owners of the house since I was seven years old). It’s not uncommon to see three bedroom townhomes rent for $4000/month. One bedroom apartments closer to the ski areas can command two grand a month easily. And the management at the ski areas/restaurants/schools/health care facilities wonder why turnover is 100% in almost all departments.

We had a Dodge Grand Caravan for years, which is the same as the Chrysler Town & Country. It was great, and had enough room for 2 adults and 3 kids + two friends. The Grand Caravan was slightly longer than the plain Caravan, which gave more space in the trunk. It was worth it. The new versions come with a built-in vacuum, which seems like a great idea to me.

I’m not sure I really have much of a preference. We didn’t have many problems until the end of life. I think they’re all pretty good now.

Edit: I do recommend captain’s chairs in the middle rather than a bench seat. It makes getting in and out a whole lot easier.

He was 33 years old. I never said anything to him about it, of course, but I could not help trying, and failing, to wrap my mind around that kind of priority.

re: #195 BlueGrl21

I have a former friend who is 45 and is doing the exact same thing. Live with Mom to pay for truck.

It’s Texas.

Reminds me a lot of this dialogue from Take This Job and Shove It (the movie):

Mrs. Hinkle (Fran Ryan): Son, you are taking too much of this on your shoulders.
Frank Macklin (Robert Hays): Yeah, well, sure is a true blue bitch.
Hinkle: I have lived here for 52 years and I never seen anybody in Dubuque yet go but one way: pick up a check for eight hours, spend the next eight pissing it away, got three color TVs in a shack of a house, $12,000 worth of pickup in the garage, and they got a fishing boat they drag out on weekends so they can get drunk and swap lies about the good life that don’t exist.
Macklin: Sounds like my old man, God rest him. And sometimes, sometimes, we even fished in between the lies and the dreams.

Keep in mind, that “$12,000 worth of pickup” was in 1981 dollars; that’s about $35-36,000 today, but even that barely puts one in the market for today’s tricked-out full-size pickups (Take This Job and Shove It is the first appearance in a movie of what we know know of as “monster trucks”; one of the earliest incarnations of Bigfoot is in it).
