The Atlantic Fires Right Wing Writer Kevin Williamson, Who Wants Women Who Have Abortions to Be Executed

Media • Views: 50,242

Conservative writer Kevin D. Williamson believes women who have abortions should be hanged, along with their doctors and nurses. But despite that clearly expressed (and frankly, disgusting) view, he was hired by The Atlantic for their prestigious new opinion/analysis section.

And today he’s been fired by The Atlantic, after a podcast surfaced in which he expressed the same murderous position at greater length.

I admit to a bit of schadenfreude at this news. LGF played a significant role in exposing Williamson’s disturbing comments in 2014, and after the story became widely known, Williamson used his National Review column to publicly accuse me of “fabricating” the tweets that ended up getting him sacked.

Now prepare for the inevitable whining and complaining from conservative pundits that Williamson is being “silenced” for his perfectly ordinary conservative views, without mentioning that he basically called for the deaths of one-third of the women in the United States.

Would NRO hire someone who wrote that conservatives are too zealous in their anti-communism? If not, they can shut up about Williamson being “censored.”

“…Later in the same episode of the podcast, Williamson continued that when it came to punishment for those who had abortions, he “would totally go with treating it like any other crime up to and including hanging” — going so far as to say that he had “a soft spot for hanging as a form of capital punishment” because “if the state is going to do violence, let’s make it violence. Let’s not pretend like we’re doing something else.”

lawhawk
@lawhawk
All Trump does is lie about this voter fraud crap that he and Kobach repeatedly spread.

Kobach keeps losing in court around these claims. Even his own experts can’t help Kobach.

It’s a malicious lie and one that Trump supporters take on faith. And that’s the real problem.
2:00 PM - Apr 5, 2018

A couple days ago, I wrote a nasty note to the Chicago Tribune concerning their editorial page and its dishonesty. One of my specific points was their support last year for the Kris Kobach disenfranchisement commission. The Tribune does have some excellent columnists — their editorial writers, not so much.

They’re out to get me. Jeffrey Goldberg wrote about Jonah Goldberg. And used the word ‘lizard’ in the headline.

An excerpt:

I wanted to interview Jonah because I find him provocative and sharp, but also because I have as a goal the disaggregation of all media Goldbergs. I am frequently confused for Jonah, and sometimes I’m blamed for the things he writes. He is blamed for the things I write, of course, and we sometimes get each other’s mail. This interview was a chance to convince podcast listeners that we are, indeed, two separate people.

This is why I roll my eyes and question the motives of people who post the whole “We need to listen to Trump supporters/conservatives and have a real conversation” mamby pamby horseshit.

I think we all here at LGF have a good idea, but do the people he teases with that realize the amount of taxes involved?

Sure, you no longer will be paying for health insurance, but that $4,000 (bare minimum) will be going to the IRS. And as far as college…that will be paid for too by everyone…family or not.

They’re still trying to hang 3 million votes on illegally cast ballots - because that’s roughly the margin Clinton won in the popular vote.

If you can claim most of those are improper, then you get closer to Trump claiming he won outright.

It’s total fabrication, but a dangerous one.

He’s a saboteur who thinks the position is their for his enrichment and personal enjoyment to take advantage of the lights and sirens.

He’s a fucking disaster for the EPA and public health.

He has floated proposals that have not only ignored widely accepted and peer-reviewed science, they have been toxic to morale at the EPA. Last summer, for example, Pruitt-who for years has questioned established climate science-proposed a series of polarizing “red team/blue team” debates aimed at unraveling the public consensus, and years of hard work by EPA staff, on climate change.

Just last month, Pruitt vowed to enact new rules limiting what pseudoscientists like Steve Milloy have deceptively called “secret science.” On the surface, such a rule sounds like a good idea; who, in their right mind would want secret science? But in reality, this rule would mean that critical public health studies could no longer be used to inform EPA policy because some of the data are protected by doctor-patient or researcher-participant confidentiality.

Also last month, Priutt issued a series of talking points to agency staff instructing them to exaggerate uncertainties about the human causes of climate change. In effect, Pruitt is asking EPA staffers to lie.

As a result of these and other actions, career civil servants are leaving the agency in droves, further hastening EPA’s brain drain.

It’s amazing that conservatives, who would decry “moral relativism”, come to the defense of Williamson. Some opinions are objectively wrong. Here’s the thing, though, this line of reasoning is the end result of the “pro-life” movement to make abortion illegal. If life begins at conception or some other point before birth, then abortion would be first degree murder - premeditated as it is hard to conceive of a scenario where a woman gets an abortion in a fit of passion. So, if it’s a capital crime, then capital punishment (because “pro-life” obviously doesn’t mean “pro-life”) comes into play, meaning, as Williamson suggests, somebody is going to be put to death. The added bonus of him wanting it to be one of the nastier ways for them to be put to death is just icing on the cake.

Sure, you no longer will be paying for health insurance, but that $4,000 (bare minimum) will be going to the IRS. And as far as college…that will be paid for too by everyone…family or not.

Let see the numbers Bernie. And then lets see how wildly popular it is once people know how it will all be funded.

I didn’t say they were using sound reasoning. But there is a consistency to their internal logic and it Williamson’s position is quite clearly the end result of that internal logic.

I’m a big believer in trying to understand someone’s reasoning, even if I don’t agree with them, because if you can understand how they think, you have a better shot at changing their mind. Dismissing someone as crazy or irrational just leads to banging your head against the wall.

I think the problem is much the same as Charles’ position on the kind of explosion of overt racism and xenophobia we’re seeing: we’ve kind of allowed it to be ignored in hopes that some sort of benign neglect will rob these opinions and the outlets that push them of oxygen, not accepting that they already have all the oxygen they need and ignoring or dismissing it as not worth engaging simply allows the shit to fester under the surface until it explodes. And as Marcotte has pointed out, it has exploded and will keep exploding in violence against women or women’s health providers, and trying to tiptoe around the virulent ideology beneath it all just…kinda helps normalize it and give it more power because it’s not being rebutted.

It seems the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) will be facing even darker times:

Among the demands by the fiscal board are:

- An increase beyond $157 per credit after next year. The increase from $57 (the current cost) to $157 is still not even presented to the community. The submitted plan also include unin
- Elimination of all tuition exemptions, except for those required by law and for honor students. This appears to include employee’s exemptions for themselves and their children.
- A reduction greater than 50% of the non-faculty employees on the smaller campuses.
- A reduction of around 20% on the pensions in excess of $1000.

Take into consideration that the average income in PR is $18,626, and the cost of life is comparable to the US. Private universities start their per credit costs at $180.

The UPR has been enforcing a hiring freeze for over 6 years now, there hasn’t been any pay raises in over 10 years, and many offices are currently running on the bare minimum employees to survive.

This pains me greatly.

We must thank our host, Mr. Johnson, for emphasizing how vile Williamson’s point of view is in regard to abortion and for his tenacity in spreading accurate information about who and what Williamson really is. Those that are supporting him seem to think nothing of him calling for women who have abortions to be hanged. All of them, including Williamson, are fucked up in the mind. I don’t like liars, and I don’t think they’d like it if I were provided a media platform from which I called for all liars to be hanged, starting with the one in the WH. Who in the hell do they think gives them the right to determine who would/should be executed for which crimes? Williamson’s firing is not a case of suppressing his right to share his opinions. It’s a matter of paying him big bucks, giving him a huge media platform from which to demonize women for having abortions, and calling for state-sanctioned murder for a legally-protected medical procedure. I would think any reputable media outlets would want nothing to do with those like Williamson, and that it wouldn’t take someone like Mr. Johnson to keep reminding these media outlets about the vile, divisive, misogynistic, homophobic, bigoted, racist, Islamophobic histories of those whom they seek to employ.

That is one stupid argument from McLaughlin. It didn’t and doesn’t effect Williamson personally, at least no more than literally everyone else. The fact that he was adopted and this his biological mother may have considered an abortion before adoption (do we even know if that was the case?) is wholly irrelevant. Everyone on the planet wouldn’t be here right now if their parents changed a couple of small decisions.

246
KGxvi  Apr 5, 2018 • 2:40:15pm

This seems like something that is going to get overturned:

Yesterday, a Washington state court struck down a Seattle law that requires landlords to accept all “qualified” tenants on a first-come-first-serve basis. Once the landlord set minimum qualifications that all tenants must meet, he or she is forbidden to discriminate between them on any basis, or to reject the next tenant in line, so long as the unit in question is vacant. Judge Suzanne Parisien ruled that the law violates the Washington state constitution because it takes property without compensation, and also effects a taking for an unconstitutional “private use.” The purpose of the law is to combat “implicit bias” by landlords. For reasons I discussed here, it is likely to harm potential tenants more than it benefits them.

And probably because of this bit:

One important issue that Judge Parisien’s opinion does not address is how this case differs from ordinary anti-discrimination laws, such as those that bar landlords from discriminating on the basis of the tenants’ race, sex, or religion.

This case was apparently decided under the state constitution, so I’m not at all qualified to talk about whether the judge got her reasoning right on that part. But the practical implication of this ruling could open the door to “ordinary anti-discrimination” claims.

The hits just keep on coming:

But Lewandowski, who agreed to come back to the committee a second time in March after initially refusing to answer questions about topics occurring once he left the campaign in June 2016, was in no mood to give Democrats anything they wanted, saying he would only answer “relevant” questions.

And, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the situation, the Trump confidante repeatedly swore at Democratic lawmakers to make the point he wasn’t going to talk further.

Why isn’t he being held in contempt of Congress? Maybe that’ll be the next indictment unsealed by Mueller?

Quick post…gonna run to friends to watch big NHL ice sport game.

Watching Ari Melber’s The Beat and it appears Trump got caught off guard in AIr Force One answering questions. He was asked about knowing about Stormy Daniels payment. He said you’d have to ask Michael Cohen. Then Trump was asked if he knew about the $180,000 payment. He said again, ask Cohen.

Stormy’s lawyer is on Ari’s show praising the day as being a gift from heaven.

His point is Trump’s statements void the NDA because if the protected was never notified there is no agreement. Both statements hang Cohen out to dry. He has no case, and he is also in more trouble paying an illegal campaign contribution.

The biggest thing though that Michael Avenatti said is what I have commented on recently. Cohen is being thrown under the bus and backed over and then forwarded time and time again.

Avenatti thinks the last few weeks have been overloading eggs in Cohen’s basket. And he said that is real dangerous for Trump because Cohen may break and do the Big Dump on The Trump.

Good stuff!

Later!

I just read through the ruling, I’m more convinced now that the appellate courts will reverse it. There is a fascination among the libertarian legal community to argue that any government regulation is some form of a taking. It’s amazing that conservatives, who would decry “moral relativism”, come to the defense of Williamson. Some opinions are objectively wrong. The fact that Erickson, Dreher, etc., would argue that nearly all opinions should be treated with equal levels of seriousness is moral relativism at its finest.

Let’s be realistic here. The real philosophical position of Erickson, Dreher et al. is that all RWNJ opinions can be debated as legitimate possibilities and intermediate steps in the construction of the new feudalism (gilded age v 2.0), while anything remotely left of center is to be banished to the outer darkness.

This position is so stupid and self-serving it has no name within philosophy.

In other words, it was a little risqué for the women’s club. “There were no other nudes in any other paintings in the collection,” Warren tells CNN. “It’s a very sensual painting.”

I went to lunch during my state public information officer class, and while sitting in a restaurant, open the opinion page of my regional paper to this letter to the editor:

starherald.com

OH HELL NO

blaming “atheists and infidels” for the rise of mass shootings and “moral decay” in the USA.

For generations, America has rejected the Law of God at every turn. Atheists and infidels have pushed for and gotten the Ten Commandments removed from courthouses and schools. Many preachers tell their congregations the Ten Commandments have been done away with. In many schools, students and staff are told they cannot pray.

In the 1970s, the Supreme Court of the United States legalized abortion, giving Americans “freedom of choice” when it comes to killing innocent babies. God says He knew us in the womb and that alone tells us the unborn are real human beings who have a right to life.

See more derp at the link above.

While everyone in my village knows I am an atheist, I doubt this fellow who lives forty miles away does.

The newspaper circulates all over the Nebraska Panhandle and southeast Wyoming. Tens of thousands of people read this fellow’s assertions this morning (and there are worse in the letter than what I quoted here).

It’s been at least a month since the paper had it’s obligatory monthly letter from a liberal. Time to fire up the keyboard tonight before the paper’s deadline and out myself as an atheist to the whole west part of the state.

It has been said that atheists are the last group it is okay to discriminate against (which is probably not true, but nearly every atheist has experienced direct discrimination). That discrimination is why we are so under-represented in politics, divorce courts, and prisons.

I have to answer this Gish Gallop of religious and NRA talking points with only four hundred words. I expect afterward, when my name and town are printed in the paper, the hate calls will come in.

I went to lunch during my state public information officer class, and while sitting in a restaurant, open the opinion page of my regional paper to this letter to the editor:

starherald.com

OH HELL NO

blaming “atheists and infidels” for the rise of mass shootings and “moral decay” in the USA.

Before the 70’s, it wasn’t uncommon to force PoC out of the neighborhood, spousal abuse and rape was more accepted but yeah Roe caused God to turn his back.

The reasonable MSM keeps on hoping that unreconstructed conservatives will prove to be decent people. We do know that some conservatives have at least temporarily changed their tune in the age of Trump: Jennifer Rubin, Ana Navarro, David Frum, occasionally Bill Kristol, Bruce Bartlett, etc.

-minor edit

They’re only upset that Mr. Trump is not using GOP-approved dogwhistles that have existed since the Sixties.

As soon as a proper bigot is in charge of their party, they’ll be right back on the same party boat.

What seems to be missing in the whole Williamson kerfuffle is why the fuck did the Atlantic hire him in the first place? I stand with Gary Legum’s 2014 assessment of Williamson’s (non)talent.

We usually avoid the work of Kevin D. Williamson at National Review, partly because every piece is overwritten tripe with a point so far outside of reality we need a wormhole to reach it, and partly because we are creeped out by Williamson, who looks like the dandified love child of Ted Bundy and a deformed penis. He is also probably the most consistent race-baiter at NR since old John Derbyshire took his white sheets to VDARE, and our blood pressure does not need more nudging towards the red line.

What makes them do that? The old enemy was the communist Soviet Union.

Now it’s free-market oligarchy.

Conservatism is only one thing: a religion. It only has one tenet: Gaining and maintaining power over others. That’s it. It has always been thus.

With the shift in Russia to a de facto oligarchy, that fits right in fine with Gilded Age conservatism here.

Trump can’t follow a script.
Trump can’t pay attention to more than a paragraph because he loses interest.
Trump can’t and wont follow direction, even if it’s meant to help get him through an appearance and stay on message.

Every week is Infrastructure Week.

Oh wait, we return to our regularly scheduled chaos.

Trump can’t follow what his own handlers prepared for him.
Trump thinks he knows better than everyone else in the room.

Trump knows his supporters will buy everything he sells because they’re just as misinformed and ignorant as he is. The GOP is following along because they’re just as screwed up as they are.

Do none of these supporters ever wonder what is happening in their country - cause Trump sure tells them nothing. They went to a talk on tax, infrastructure and heard about rape and election fraud which never happened.

I am out of adjectives to describe this moronic excuse for a person - let alone what one could call anyone who supports him as president. Every last person who has worked for this administration deserves to spend the remainder of their lives regretting that they ever knew him

Pope Francis has tilted a little bit the Catholic Church towards progress. Not much, but with the behemoth non-monolith that the Catholic Church is, it’s a big step.

Adding fuel to the fire is that the Pope is making huge personnel changes, removing Cardinals Burke, and Müeller, both strong conservative within the Church.

Besides, the anti-Catholic sentiment has been always there. For example, Chick Tracts.

The state’s emergency management office suggests setting up social media accounts to disseminate information to the public in the event of disasters or emergencies. I brought up yesterday in class that in the light of Facebook’s issues with Cambridge Analytica, I could not see how to keep the account secure from third parties’ actions (or Facebook’s).

I suggested instead we could use the public library’s blog on the state’s Website if such a thing was needed for outsiders. (We already use what’s called a “trap line” in public affairs in my village: known locations where public information is posted.)

Just after Bell has stepped out of the building, one of the cops asks him to open up his brief case. He knows if he does this, someone will shout that he’s going for a gun and he will be a dead man.

Will the Deep State make it easier or harder for Kudlow to get cocaine?

Kushner can just bring it back in a couple of hundred diplomatic pouches. No problem.

OMG I am showing my age but I am remembering the outrage and huge scandal over unpaid foreign UN parking tickets.

Oh the unacceptable deep swampy thing that was.

Sigh.

My wife was banned from RedState after one comment with factual information. She wears that as a badge of honour.

So does hubby.

Can we see inside those bags Mr. Kushner?

Sorry but I don’t have the clearance to open them

How many liberal writers does Erickson employ?

Someone should tweet that question at him. I’d love to see his response. Hypocrite that he is.

Liberals are bad because Ward Churchill, apparently.

You remember - Ward Churchill? Of whom nobody had ever heard, and who was roundly denounced by pretty much everybody?

Ward Churchill is the Cloward Piven Strategy of Saul Alinskys.

When WC was paid a settlement after his firing, someone here remarked, “Never was so much paid by so many to a faux Sioux.”

BREAKING: The Democrat in the Tennessee U.S. Senate race to replace Corker now has a 10-point lead over Republican candidate U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, according to a new poll from Middle Tennessee State University. #DemWave #VoteDem newschannel5.com

— Scott Dworkin (@funder) April 5, 2018

re: #315 Big Beautiful Door

If a Democrat can win in Alabama, there is nowhere a Democrat can’t run and possibly win.

re: #328 Jay C

Well, it certainly can’t hurt that Phil Bredesen is a former Governor: if nothing else, name recognition -as opposed to Gene Eric Democrat - has to be worth a couple of points right there*. I myself know next to nothing about TN politics, and even I recognize his name. (As I also dimly recall Marsha Blackburn as being a particularly wingy wingnut…?)

I love how Dworkin neglected to tell in the tweet exactly who the “Democrat in the Tennessee U.S. Senate race to replace Corker” (former two-term Nashville mayor and two-term TN governor Phil Bredesen), because that greatly explains why he has a 10-point lead over Blackburn: he was (and is still) very popular in both prior offices and still has good name recognition and a good reputation for a mayor/governor that got things done.

As for Blackburn, “the Republican from AT&T and Comcast” for her tireless efforts to earn the money both companies give her in campaign contributions by screwing everyone else that wants actual competition in the telecom space, she most certainly is a very wingy wingnut.

I remember him. Most everyone I know thought he was a clown.

Wasn’t Churchill outed as a real “fake Indian”?

Guess the same could be said for JFK, RFK, Ghandi. I’m sure JFK would have been alive today if he had a 38 under his suit - after all the combined forces of the Dallas Police force and the Secret Service were obviously in need of some reinforcements.

These gun bros are just nucking futz.
