Remember the good old days when the world was coming to an end because Seth Rogan and James Franco made a disrespectful movie about the leader of North Korea?

Well guess what y’all, I work at the Chicago Tribune TV station that Sinclair wants to buy. I’ve worked here for 33 years so I can probably hold out ‘til retirement if it’s not too bad. The thing is, this station has been an institution in the Chicagoland area for 70 years. We focus heavily on local stuff, we’re the TV home of the Cubs, Sox, Bulls and Blackhawks. I just don’t see them f*cking with us too much because our viewers (and probably advertisers) will go berserk. This is a very democratic city & state and they’d be slitting their own throats if the ratings start dropping. I think that not only would the ratings drop, the Chicago print media would blast them (they’ve already been doing that quite a bit over the last year) because nobody wants this station to change. With all the publicity lately, now everyone will know who’s to blame. Also, this is a strong union city/state and most of Sinclair’s stations have been in right-to work or weak union states. The last person who bought us, Sam Zell, damn near ruined us. In the fine tradition of a Mitt Romney, he took the company private, loaded on $9 billion of debt and forced us into bankruptcy. All of this is to say, who the f*ck knows what’s going to happen, we’ve all been on edge for over a year now, and the best we can hope for, is that this sale doesn’t go through. Thanks for reading/listening!!!!

I hope things work out well.

The trouble is that these right wing nut jobs have more money than anyone should have, so they can simply make every radio station they own into a RWNJ propaganda outfit, even if it costs them money to do so.

Well, here’s something I didn’t know, but learned when looking it up.

Someone in E-mail called me “un-American” for using an “umlaut” in the phrase “I filed for reëlection.” (The correct term is diaereses for that diacritical mark over a vowel to indicate two different vowel sounds with paired vowels, but I passed on that.) That person suggested I use a hyphen (re-election).

The correct usage is the diaereses and not a hyphen to avoid confusion with the phrase “do an election over.”

That said, digging into hyphens (since Woodrow Wilson once said hyphens were un-American), I found that the phrase “hyphenated American” (such as Polish-American) used to be a racist dog whistle by conservatives from about 1890-1920. The term has lost its racist and anti-Catholic roots.

A fascinating read on the subject of why the term “hyphenated American” was once a racist and anti-Catholic term can be found here (Wikipedia)

A speech by President Woodrow Wilson employing it in that manner can be found here (goes to the American Presidency Project).

Not going to disagree with you. We are in a cold war with Republicans that would sell the country off in chunks if they could make money and keep controlling the remainder.

And because we’re in a war, different rules apply:
1. The people “being nice” can be the ones that hurt you the most.
2. Sometimes your allies are those you’d oppose on any normal day, because the one goal you have in common is preserving the country.

We believe in rules and laws and having them apply equally to everyone.

They believe that rules and laws apply to everyone but them.

We play nice and try to be equitable, they play dirty to win at all costs.

We need more on our side, especially those higher up in the foodchain, to grow a pair and call out the GOP on their bullshit much more often, vocally and in public.

We hung up on each other on the phone several times during the campaign, he was *pissed* at me when I told him I was voting for Hillary.

Small but significant story from west Texas. Wolfforth abutts Lubbock on the southwest side.
The idea behind this was to drill through the relatively shallow Ogallala aquifer, which is already heavily tapped, down to the Edwards-Trinity aquifer at about 300 feet and the Dockum aquifer at 1700 feet in an effort to find a new water source for the town. They found water at 300 feet but the surrounding strata are clay and the water is too hard to get out. This is the first attempt to tap the deep aquifers for municipal use in Texas and reflects the perilous state of the Ogallala.
Wolfforth’s drill for new water source unsuccessful; exploration to continue

When I see the Roman Catholic Church, the United Methodist Church, &c calling these hate mongers out, then I’ll reconsider. (Allegedly “moderate” Christians far outnumber these guys. Silence is assent, and every church organisation in the nation has assented for decades.)

Pentecostals and Baptist preachers have been calling out Roman Catholics as “papists” and “no True Christians” for ages. I see no difference between this and the legendary Scot reading the Glasgow Morning Herald about a heinous crime by an Aberdeen man.

re: #50 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

The Dockum aquifer sounds pretty adventurous.

Salinity and hardness levels for the water in this aquifer vary wildly, ranging from less than 1,000 milligrams of total dissolved solids per liter to more than 20,000. Water from the more saline areas poses a danger to soils, limiting the aquifer’s potential for irrigation in the long run. Nearby uranium supplies have made the water highly radioactive, rendering much of it too dangerous to drink. The water also contains radium-226 and -228, though in more manageable quantities. Water from the eastern outcrop areas tends to be fresher and less dangerous.

You think you’re not being harsh, I do, it’s a subjective matter. I’m just saying I felt imo you were being harsh for an individual who did denounce Falwell. I just don’t know what you expect out of him as a man. For all we know, his individual pastor saw what Falwell did and condemned it. Guys like my Uncle Bill or Pope Francis or some of the other clergy would be interesting because they’re open minded. Ain’t nothing open minded about Jerry and Franklin.

Naaah. See that thing about the cold war above? I’m not waiting around until that happens. They’d sell the country before that. I’ll take all the allies I can get.

FWIW I think by their actions many churches do denounce Falwell. Whether it’s by welcoming LGBT members or clergy, welcoming immigrants, or by promoting actually helping the less well off. I don’t need a ministry to call out Falwell directly if I see actions that show their theological worldview rejects his.

re: #66 HappyWarrior

You think you’re not being harsh, I do, it’s a subjective matter. I’m just saying I felt imo you were being harsh for an individual who did denounce Falwell. I just don’t know what you expect out of him as a man. For all we know, his individual pastor saw what Falwell did and condemned it. You don’t know this guy and I think again imo you’re being way too judgmental towards someone who is an ally.

Name a church organisation (not a person) that has called out Falwell. Even one. I am not being harsh on him, as I wrote above, I laud him.

I’m going to have to log out for now: I have a letter to write to the newspaper tonight calling out a Christian blaming atheists for “taking God out of schools” and blaming us for school shootings because we “banned prayer.” When was the last time any church organisation called out those lies in the name of God?

(I forgot: Martin Luther noted lying in the name of God was a good thing if it won souls.)

Nope: Direct press release. Officially condemn them. I do need a church ministry to call them out directly: Silence is assent.

Given how I believe Muslims shouldn’t have to constantly apologize for Islamic terrorism, I don’t believe Christians should have to denounce every asshole Christian either. Now I will concede, I would like to see more denouncing of those like Falwell but my opinion remains that actions can be renouncing. In Uganda, the Episiocal Church iirc has been among the biggest push backers against the anti lgbt violence and legislation.

When you’re done with the letter post it to LGF ASAP. It can be refined here before you send it to the newspaper. (wink wink). Good luck in the writing!

Ditto and I hope you get positive feedback on it. Blaming nonbelievers for a lack of morality is a cop out.

QFT. Dangerous.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees it this way. As for Falwell? Can’t stand the bastard and the world is better without his father in it. But the Catholics I know who have nothing in common with his theological worldview I don’t think should realistically be expected to constantly denounce him. And as I said I think by promoting inclusion, many do it just as I think many Muslims do it as well without coming out and saying Isis doesn’t represent me.

Can I just say that I’m not impressed with either guy? Jerry Falwell, Jr., you can guess. Shane Claiborne, I’d be more inclined to be on his side, except he’s one of those Evangelicals who, despite their seeming lefty ideals, still refuse to accept LGBT people as fully human. (He thinks LGBT persons should be celibate.) So I consider this more of an in-house spat rather than anything that’s going to benefit the larger community.

I’ve got a documentary camera crew coming through town this weekend to film me picketing in front of Mark Driscoll’s “church” up in Scottsdale. I try to keep my criticisms of Driscoll on the secular side, just as I’ve done with Scientology. After all, there’s so much material to mine there—plagiarism, taking money from the church to promote “Real Marriage,” using a skeevy third-party company to get “Real Marriage” on to the New York Times bestseller list, using most (90%+) of the monies donated for missions on new church plants, imploding his Seattle megachurch, telling women we’re just “penis homes” for men…I could go on and on.

Driscoll is the gift that keeps on giving. His church attendees don’t like it when I tell them that Driscoll owns the outfit (he legally does) and if he were to leave, that church would go under. (One guy complained I was spending way too much time looking at corporate docs. “They’re all online,” I said. “And I used to be a lawyer.” Cue disgusted look.) But Evangelicals aren’t out there picketing him, it’s me, and I’m outside the charmed circle of the household of the faithful, by my own choice.
