A Curiously Sad Song From They Might Be Giants: “The Greatest”

they call me the greatest
because I’m not very good
and they’re being sarcastic
they’re being sarcastic

oh, I’m taking names
but I’m not doing much
with the names that I’m taking
G O A T
they’re being sarcastic
they’re being sarcastic

they call me the greatest
but those cheers can be quiet
so I listen close
I listen close

yes I’m taking notes
but those notes aren’t helping
the ink washes away
G O A T
it washes away
it washes away

The most corrupt administration in U.S. history:

“….The rules Mr. Pruitt is targeting would require automakers to nearly double the average fuel economy of passenger vehicles to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Automakers have argued the rule is onerous, forcing them to invest heavily in building hybrid and electric vehicles.

As part of the process, Mr. Pruitt filed the 38-page document, which is meant to supply the government’s legal justification for rolling back the rule. About half the document consists of quotations from automakers laying out their objections to the rule. By comparison, the Obama administration’s 1,217-page document justifying its implementation of the regulation included technical, scientific and economic analyses justifying the rule.

Experts in environmental policy said the lack of analytical arguments in this week’s E.P.A. filing surprised them. “This document is unprecedented,” said Mr. McCargar, the former E.P.A. senior policy analyst. “The E.P.A. has just never done anything like this.”
……………….

Most of the document consists of arguments quoting directly from public comments made by automaker lobbyists, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Global Automakers, that the pollution rules will be unduly burdensome on the auto industry, as well as public comments from Toyota, Fiat Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi.”nytimes.com

While getting my haircut this morning, I discovered that my barber’s wife was in my high school graduation class. There were 2000 kids in my high school so it was very easy to not know other kids in your own class. I looked up her picture in the yearbook and didn’t have any memories of her as a classmate.

But there was one interesting tidbit I’d forgotten about: There was a photo of students sitting on the school lawn with a caption that said “Another day, another bomb threat”. This was in 1971-72.

Irony is dead.

What if they are first or late night shift workers, have the day or afternoon off to go to game, etc.?

Just mentioning it. I think this type of back ‘n’ forth can get dumb when we don’t know all the details.

As crazy as it is right now, I think it is always good to have very solid understanding in criticisms. Best not to come off like many of the people in the video.

And yes, I am a Cleveland baseball fan. I grew up a fan in north central Ohio and I too had Chief Wahoo logo stuff as a kid. I’ve learned, and I would like to see the team work for a name change.

And the video makes me sick. A lot of bigoted White folk being assholes.

I’ve been following the terrible happenings in Israel lately, and while I have no love for Hamas I think what we’re seeing now is what happens when someone like Benjamin Netanyahu feels like the president of the US has given him a green light to take the violence up several notches.

Just last weekend a Trump supporter was attempting to convince me that Trump had to be doing something I could support, at least one thing — tax cuts, the wall, something. I said the wall was the stupidest fucking thing ever and asked if it was so necessary then why would we leave our northern border open. He said, “Because we’ve never found tunnels used to bring drugs and weapons into our country from Canada.”

I said, “And how exactly is the wall going to stop that?” After a pause he said, “That’s a fair point.”

It seems Trump’s hatred for people from Mexico and Central America takes precedence over his hatred of people of the Middle East or anywhere else. His campaign started on that note first…nothing has changed.

Another clear symbol that Trump has decided he is going to be in Trump Campaign Mode forever and count on it to save his butt from Republican Congressional criticism, maybe even protection from Mueller.

When I was a kid, lamb kidneys would appear infrequently in the A&P’s meat section, and generally only a pair at a time. Mom would grab ‘em and freeze them till we had sufficient numbers. Then Dad would make this wonderful dish of stewed kidneys with mushrooms and sherry for breakfast, usually on special occasions. They were so tender and yummy, especially with fried eggs with runny yolks, and toast to mop up the gravy/yolk mixture.

Christ, I’m salivating just thinking of it!

Billionaire religious fundamentalist, right-wing populist, who takes his cues from the Heritage Foundation, wants to take over Brazil.

What could possibly go wrong?

Billionaire wants to wake up Brazil with presidential bid

With scores of Brazilians still reeling from recession and dependent on a heavy but generous government hand, billionaire and presidential hopeful Flavio Rocha proposes a radical overhaul of the state.

“I’d sell all the state companies,” Rocha said in a recent interview at Bloomberg’s offices in Sao Paulo. […] “We need to redesign the state.”

[…] His main battle cry is to unleash Brazil’s entrepreneurial spirit and slash inefficiencies.

[…]

A few years ago a candidate like Rocha would have been booed off of any campaign stage. But the ballooning of the right-wing MBL movement that supports him shows the potential he and his ideas carry. As he just launched his candidacy, there are no opinion polls showing voter intention for him yet.

[…]

On the desk in his office, Rocha says, he keeps the latest ranking of countries according to the Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom. […]

[…]

Yet what will decide this election and move voters hearts are not economic but moral issues, says Rocha. Describing himself as ultra-conservative on social issues, he wants to get tough on public security and strengthen family values. As member of the Heal Our Land denomination, Rocha is a creationist and against gay marriage. Yet he says he’s fine with the civil union of gay people.

[…]

For too long have governments been soft on criminals, trying to explain their behavior through their socio-economic environment, Rocha said. “At fault is the guy who pulls the trigger, not society.”

Yet pushed for details on family values and other proposals, Rocha stuck to more generic principles. He also had little to say on who his advisers are, what his campaign strategy would be, or how he would form a coalition if he won.

[…]

He doesn’t foresee using his family wealth, estimated in $2.2 billion, of which he is the main benefactor. A popular movement should be financed by many, goes the argument. Rocha declined to comment further on his financials.

[…]

“The debate now will be between those who work and those who act as parasites. The parasites are driving the state carriage, and they are a minority.”

Sounds all too familiar.

My folks didn’t fish. They didn’t have to. Bucky Hartzel, two doors down the street, LOVED fishing in the creek that ran through town. Didn’t like fish. Would come by with the afternoon’s catch and ask if Mom and Dad wanted them. They snatched them greedily, but gratefully, from him.

I don’t think he is scared of anything. His “security detail” is just a way to give some of his buddies cushy government jobs.

I think he is fairly paranoid———though in truth, I have read he has gotten some threats. The bio-metric lock for his office, the expensive soundproof phone booth, the frequent bug sweeps and the bullet proof desk he sought to buy for the reception area outside his office suggest he may be truly fearful, but beyond what is reasonable.

Deep down he knows his policies and practices are wildly unpopular so he assumes he is a major target.

Considering that he met with industry representatives twenty-five times as often as with environmental supporters he might well deserve to be heckled everywhere he goes

The Russian mobsters are “busting the joint out”, like Goodfellas.

Henry Hill: Now the guy’s got Paulie as a partner. Any problems, he goes to Paulie. Trouble with a bill, he can go to Paulie. Trouble with the cops, deliveries, Tommy, he can call Paulie. But now the guy’s got to come up with Paulie’s money every week. No matter what. Business bad? Fuck you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? Fuck you, pay me. The place got hit by lightning, huh? Fuck you, pay me. Also, Paulie could do anything. Especially run up bills on the joint’s credit. And why not? Nobody’s gonna pay for it anyway. And as soon as the deliveries are made in the front door, you move the stuff out the back and sell it at a discount. You take a two hundred dollar case of booze and you sell it for a hundred. It doesn’t matter. It’s all profit. And then finally, when there’s nothing left, when you can’t borrow another buck from the bank or buy another case of booze, you bust the joint out. You light a match.

Saw your post last night about mouse woes, but the thread was as dead as the mice you’re dealing with aren’t ;) Seriously though, have you looked into Victor’s electronic mouse traps? I’ve had a lot of luck with them (yes, I had to buy more than one because I live in a rural area and the damn things had a nice little rodent family -_-)

I used roasted peanuts as bait (they have a nice, strong smell), placed them as far back in the trap as I could, and placed the traps themselves up against walls in the areas where I’d seen mouse activity. As soon as the mouse steps onto the metal plates inside the trap, it gets a shock and dies instantly. No muss, no fuss, no collateral cruelty like what you’d get from a glue trap - just open the trap door and dump the mouse out.

“…The flights in and out of Rostov, which no organisation has previously documented, are operated by Cham Wings, a Syrian airline hit with U.S. sanctions in 2016 for allegedly transporting pro-Assad fighters to Syria and helping Syrian military intelligence transport weapons and equipment. The flights, which almost always land late at night, don’t appear in any airport or airline timetables, and fly in from either Damascus or Latakia, a Syrian city where Russia has a military base.

The operation lays bare the gaps in the U.S. sanctions, which are designed to starve Assad and his allies in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and the Hezbollah militia of the men and materiel they need to wage their military campaign.

It also provides a glimpse of the methods used to send private Russian military contractors to Syria - a deployment the Kremlin insists does not exist. Russian officials say Moscow’s presence is limited to air strikes, training of Syrian forces and small numbers of special forces troops.”

Meet Michael Brown, a 17-year-old senior at Lamar High School in Houston, who applied to 20 colleges and universities, including four Ivy League schools. The results are in and he’s been accepted by every one of them. All 20…with a full ride to each and more than $260,000 in scholarships.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Brown, who comes from the city’s economically challenged Third Ward, was able to make it happen thanks to a 4.68 GPA and inspiration from his mother, Berthinia Rutledge-Brown, who finished her degree while he was in elementary school. he has more options than he ever imagined.

“After she got divorced, she decided she needed to get a better job,” he said. She enrolled at Houston Community College and worked hard to become a licensed counselor when Brown was 8 or 9 years old.

Indeed, some students are applying to 30 or 40 or even more schools, a feat made easier by the Common Application. A question on the mind of nearly every college-bound high school junior is: How many colleges should I apply to?

That kind of relationship “will not help us” and does not exist, he said. Speaking in a meeting with Washington Post editors and reporters, Mohammed denied U.S. media reports that he had claimed Kushner was “in his pocket,” or that, when the two met in Riyadh in October, he had sought or received a green light from Kushner for massive arrests of allegedly corrupt members of the royal family and Saudi businessmen that took place in the kingdom shortly afterward.”

Netanyahu is going to drive Israel over a cliff and the Israeli government with him. He’s got his own corruption scandals (plural) to deal with and yet he holds on to the PM because his party has managed to garner just enough seats to stay ahead of everyone else.

ny-engineers.com

As a general rule, all Group R occupancies in New York City must be equipped with an automatic sprinkler system. The system must cover all fire areas in the building, and the requirement applies for any mixed occupancies where Group R predominates. There are only three types of residential buildings where the NYC code makes automatic sprinkler systems optional:

Detached one-family dwellings.
Detached two-family dwellings.
Townhouses, also known as multiple single-family dwellings.

Don’t think dump tower is one of those

In my opinion, an indefinite grandfathering clause should not be allowed. If you can’t get your shit together and get a proper retrofitting proposal done within a decade of the introduction of the new requirements, I question your fitness to be a building owner. Even if it involves significant cost and disruption, at the very least, they should be able to have a plan in place for how to meet the new code within a certain time frame and be actively working on it.

Well, the value of all the rest of Trump’s properties will take a nose dive because you just know someone will investigate whether those have sprinklers as well. Trump will either be forced to spend to install the sprinklers now, or watch the value of those buildings plummet because people will see that they’re not safe.

Well, the value of all the rest of Trump’s properties will take a nose dive because you just know someone will investigate whether those have sprinklers as well. Trump will either be forced to spend to install the sprinklers now, or watch the value of those buildings plummet because people will see that they’re not safe.

And his net worth will continue dropping thanks to his own incompetence.

He can’t even manage real estate properly.

And I believe attendance at all Trump branded properties has been off since he took office.

Nina Turner, that bastion of electoral success, who has run in ONE contested election and got her progressive ass beat by almost 25 points by the truly loathsome Jon Husted.

Yeah, let’s all listen to Nina. (The woman gets on my very last nerve.)

I no longer have a last nerve for Nina or Bernie.

re: #216 Joe Bacon 🌹

Spring 1973, graduating from high school, applied to 15 colleges, accepted at 6 but 5 of them were way out of price range—unaffordable. I could only afford to go to Pitt where the trimester tuition and board were both $470.

Now the tuition and board for a trimester? Add a zero…Took me 10 years to pay back $8,250 in undergrad loans. Now we hire kids who owe over $100K in loans. Insane…

I applied to several schools in 1977 (around five) and was accepted to all. However, there was no way I could afford any of them (thus The Fleet for me).

So, he goes to a hotel, his hotel, in a city he already has a residence at?

Once the entourage is all hooked up with rooms, he’s putting a quick 50 grand into his bank account.

I sure hope the person who died in the fire at trump towers isn’t a retired Russian spy.

Yeah, would suck if he was retired.
