A band abbreviated LSD sounds like something that would have come out of the 60s.

“I Can Change.”

I remember back when Afros were so hot they hit crossover territory. I came home from whatever Third Avenue in-house freelance publishing job I had at the time and found a woman with a big Afro sitting in the living room. My lady friend’s work was such that there were often showbiz types hanging about, so I asked this stranger if Jane (my lady) was around. She burned me with a look and I realized that she was Jane. She’d had a hairstylist in and put her long, lovely black hair up in a huge ‘fro. We spent a long fun time laughing over martinis.

Men and women are probably equals as liars, but in my experience, women have far more chances to be chameleons.

When demolitions go wrong:

Denmark demolition goes wrong as silo falls wrong way

A 53-metre high silo crashed into a cultural centre after a demolition in Denmark caused the building to fall the wrong way. Onlookers cheered at the detonation in the town of Vordingborg but it soon became apparent something had gone wrong as the tower toppled towards the waterfront library and music school.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana in the 60’s. People would come and visit and ask “What’s that smell?” to which I would answer “What smell?”

And when people asked “Why is the sky that color?” I would reply with “What color? Is the sky supposed to have a color?”

The man has no fucking clue and that’s why Xi will eat his lunch. Those cars we’re “importing” are built by US manufacturers in plants located in China, using resources in China, then “exported” over here for domestic sale. And guess what, foreign automakers do the same, building cars for sale in their own markets in the US.

I’d love a reporter to ask him or Stepford Sarah to name a single Chinese automaker that exports cars for sale to the US market.

The thing about Trump that really gets me is he has no idea when he is wrong about something he says or tweets. He just goes on and ignores it. Not a bit of embarrassment, no acknowledging he was wrong.

I wonder if anyone ever corrects him or do they just count it as another Trumpism and Donny being a dummy like always.

This is the real depiction of the “Emperor’s New Clothes.”

And if someone does correct him, I bet there has always been hell to pay.

I’m not an expert on the Chinese market, but are they really US manufacturers? The Chinese require foreign manufacturers to partner with domestic companies and that those domestic companies must own at least 51% stake and also be handed any IP involved.

Trump is still an idiot, but even GM that is booming in China only owns a 44% stake in that business and are arguably selling their future to get it. I am sure it is not as black and white as that, but it is an issues that China needs to be confronted on, unfortunately I don’t think Trump is the right person to be doing it.

My wife told me about this accident when I woke up this morning.

The bus was on the Southern State Parkway, which was built for cars - there is a strict rule that no trucks or buses are allowed on the parkway because most of them can’t get under the overpasses. It’s pretty routine to have out of state drivers take trucks on the parkway and they always end up getting stuck trying to get under an overpass.

The story said the driver wasn’t from LI. If he had been he would have known not to take a goddamn bus on the Southern Parkway.

No, I did not, but it is nice they are preserving the site and making King Records last hopefully forever. Too many people don’t know the King history and how they were not only an independent studio, they even pressed and packaged their own vinyl. I think they may have even printed their own labels and covers.

And the best thing…in that little studio they had both Black and White artists working together and sharing tunes, etc. For the 50s and 60s in Cincinnati that was hard to believe.

re: #108 makeitstop

My wife told me about this accident when I woke up this morning.

The bus was on the Southern State Parkway, which was built for cars - there is a strict rule that no trucks or buses are allowed on the parkway because most of them can’t get under the overpasses. It’s pretty routine to have out of state drivers take trucks on the parkway and they always end up getting stuck trying to get under an overpass.

The story said the driver wasn’t from LI. If he had been he would have known not to take a goddamn bus on the Southern Parkway.

Those overpasses were built intentionally low to keep buses (ones that might be carrying black people from the city) away from the beaches.

Do they have signs, or height bars on the entrances to give warning to the vehicles drivers that don’t know the dangers? Of course that won’t prevent all the issues. I was just wondering if NY state gives them clear warning and how they back up the strict rules?

Monday…
I check my FB page, and a new “i” info bubble appears on the Ted Nugent article. I click that thing and a panel all about my linked source (CNN) comes up. Bravo, great answer to one of the problems. Later I guess we get to see who got swept up at CA.

Saw a Mozilla guy point out the whole biz model the net now runs on depends on our loss of profile/habits privacy. That’s not just a FB problem right?

Also, thanks FB for finally doing what people have done here since before I registered. Specifically? Calls out source. What a concept.

Yeah, I’ve seen plenty of those videos on YouTube. Amazing that not only do they not read the signs, they don’t seem to even know the height of their vehicles, don’t seem to wonder about if they can get under it or know the reputation of that bridge.

Some of the videos I’ve seen the drivers just go into it without a care and the truck raises up on it’s back wheels and crashes down on the front axle. Not good.

We had an underpass here in Columbus a many years back that caused similar issues. The problem was they didn’t change the signs over the years and kept laying asphalt down and the signs were no longer correct. I imagine that may have cost some government agency in that case.

All entrance signs to the parkways (both Northern and Southern State) clearly state ‘no trucks.’ Every once in a while, people don’t read the signs.

Coming home from Philly on Saturday, there was a truck and trailer on the parkway with Alabama plates. Another non-reader, although his trailer fit under the overpasses. He probably ended up getting a ticket for bringing his trailer onto the parkway at some point.

re: #137 Hecuba’s daughter

So I guess it’s too difficult for Sirota to understand that a 17 year old may change her views over time. Or is he just a misogynist, like so many other male reporters.

-ed for minor typo

Believe it or not, one of my sisters - who plays at being a True Progressive - uses the ‘Goldwater Girl’ period of Clinton’s life as a reason to hate her, claiming that when she was 17, she ran the McGovern campaign in our county.

Two things: first, our Dad was a Conscientious Objector during WWII. We were raised in a progressive Mennonite church that preached pacifism. Dad actually spoke at an antiwar rally during Vietnam, so supporting McGovern was simply following in the familial footsteps. Clinton’s family was Republican. She followed in THOSE footsteps, but later repudiated the Republican Party.

I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Second, I was there, and that’s bullshit. She gave a little money and got a ‘For McGovern Before Miami’ button. She didn’t knock on doors, she didn’t go to meetings, let alone organize them. She does this shit all the time, what we in the family call ‘Creative Memories’, in which she makes up stories about her life that the rest of us know are bullshit. Of the 6 of us, she’s the only one who didn’t go out for either a sport or for cheerleading in high school. She stayed at home, in her room, reading. A few years ago she said, in all seriousness, “Of course, I was the athletic one.” The rest of us just kinda went O_o. What can you do? Who knows if she believes it? I suspect she does, and her delusions do no real harm.

Dayton, Ohio,

August 7, 1865

To My Old Master, Colonel P.H. Anderson, Big Spring, Tennessee

Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jourdon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you. I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house. I suppose they never heard about your going to Colonel Martin’s to kill the Union soldier that was left by his company in their stable. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living. It would do me good to go back to the dear old home again, and see Miss Mary and Miss Martha and Allen, Esther, Green, and Lee. Give my love to them all, and tell them I hope we will meet in the better world, if not in this. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance.

I want to know particularly what the good chance is you propose to give me. I am doing tolerably well here. I get twenty-five dollars a month, with victuals and clothing; have a comfortable home for Mandy,—the folks call her Mrs. Anderson,—and the children—Milly, Jane, and Grundy—go to school and are learning well. The teacher says Grundy has a head for a preacher. They go to Sunday school, and Mandy and me attend church regularly. We are kindly treated. Sometimes we overhear others saying, “Them colored people were slaves” down in Tennessee. The children feel hurt when they hear such remarks; but I tell them it was no disgrace in Tennessee to belong to Colonel Anderson. Many darkeys would have been proud, as I used to be, to call you master. Now if you will write and say what wages you will give me, I will be better able to decide whether it would be to my advantage to move back again.

As to my freedom, which you say I can have, there is nothing to be gained on that score, as I got my free papers in 1864 from the Provost-Marshal-General of the Department of Nashville. Mandy says she would be afraid to go back without some proof that you were disposed to treat us justly and kindly; and we have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future. I served you faithfully for thirty-two years, and Mandy twenty years. At twenty-five dollars a month for me, and two dollars a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to eleven thousand six hundred and eighty dollars. Add to this the interest for the time our wages have been kept back, and deduct what you paid for our clothing, and three doctor’s visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to. Please send the money by Adams’s Express, in care of V. Winters, Esq., Dayton, Ohio. If you fail to pay us for faithful labors in the past, we can have little faith in your promises in the future. We trust the good Maker has opened your eyes to the wrongs which you and your fathers have done to me and my fathers, in making us toil for you for generations without recompense. Here I draw my wages every Saturday night; but in Tennessee there was never any pay-day for the negroes any more than for the horses and cows. Surely there will be a day of reckoning for those who defraud the laborer of his hire.

In answering this letter, please state if there would be any safety for my Milly and Jane, who are now grown up, and both good-looking girls. You know how it was with poor Matilda and Catherine. I would rather stay here and starve—and die, if it come to that—than have my girls brought to shame by the violence and wickedness of their young masters. You will also please state if there has been any schools opened for the colored children in your neighborhood. The great desire of my life now is to give my children an education, and have them form virtuous habits.

Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me.

From your old servant,

Jourdon Anderson.

National Jewish Health in Denver is Mecca for respiratory diseases.

Yay! Glad you got to NJH, and to the Museum of Nature & Science.
Funny to hear it called ‘Mecca’ but glad it lived up to its reputation. So very glad to hear that it worked — an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment plan are good news even if the necessity for them ain’t.

Both of my parents worked at National Jewish in the late 50’s/early 60’s, in tuberculosis research. NJH was founded when they sent ‘consumption’ patients out to Colorado for the dry, clear air — always struck me as ironic in the 70’s that it was located near the heart of Denver’s notorious Brown Cloud zone. (And strikes me as hopeful that my son & friends don’t know the term ‘Brown Cloud’ and are horrified on the days when an inversion layer parks an icky haze over downtown. In my day, we were astonished when we COULD see the buildings.)

Apologies for Denver’s lovely spring weather! Hope it’s better when you come back, and that you folks can get up to the mountains for a bit. They sell O2 bottles in the grocery store for tourists, if you’re planning to run up there :).

Fingers crossed for good results with Step Two.

Ha!

Same for Arizona TJs. Their parking lots give me anxiety.

[Embedded content]

They actually seek out locations that have “insufficient” parking. The reality is that most building codes require far more parking spots than are necessary for daily business. Rather, they require building for a handful of days during the year (if that).

When you look at parking malls for the most extreme example of this, there are hundreds of spots that are dead space, and that’s land that could serve better purposes.

Here’s the thinking behind Trader Joe’s parking principles.

Since Trader Joe’s is paying for that parking whether it’s used or not, they’re trying to maximize their investment by not giving more than is absolutely necessary for the space needed.

After all, if you got to other supermarkets, you’ll see plenty of spots all over the place except for a few select days of the year (Super Bowl, before holidays, etc.) and at most other times, the parking lots are well below capacity.

The whole family has lived in a protective cloud. They seemed to have discovered a whole world they are unfamiliar with when the Big Don decided he was going to step out of the cloud to run for President.

Sadly, they have no clue to how ignorant they really are. And a great example of how money can’t buy you everything.

I am currently under a 12 hour Twitter suspension. What was my offense? Two days ago I came across a tweet by Franklin Graham decrying “vile” attacks on the 1st lady by the hateful left. I think someone made fun of her accent. Thinking there may be a slight chance he had said something negative about Michele Obama in the past, I did a Google search.

I found an article about Franklin calling Michele “The Whore of Babylon”. this bizstandardnews.com I Retweeted it in response with the caption “Franklin Graham is a two dollar Whore” This morning I get a 12 hour suspension and was forced to delete the tweet.

I follow transit policy in NYC metro area, and there’s a site called streetsblog that is useful (and also has stuff about how to get safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists). One of the things they regularly feature are parking craters - locations around which are endless parking lots for no good reason.

They have annual contests for the worst parking craters - showcasing awful land use policy.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., on Monday gave birth to a daughter, Maile Pearl Bowlsbey, becoming the first sitting senator to have a baby while in office.

Duckworth, who turned 50 on March 12, is one of only 10 women in the history of the nation to give birth while in Congress, with the other babies born to members serving in the House.

This is the second child for Duckworth and her husband, Bryan Bowlsbey. Daughter Abigail was born Nov. 18, 2014, when Duckworth was 47 and in the House, representing a suburban Chicago congressional district.

10% humidity is normal.
That’s why you can walk under a tree and actually feel the temperature change, not like those damp climates — say Omaha, or Central Texas — where shade barely makes a difference in how much you’re sweating :)

It’s not that it doesn’t make a difference. It’s more like leaving the shade makes it slightly more hideous.

The other thing of course is that the sweat doesn’t evaporate, so it becomes more a means of dehydration than of cooling.
