FBI Raid Seeks Records of Payments to Porn Star and Ex-Playmate

Law • Views: 48,917

Here’s the latest on those FBI raids of Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s home and office: they’re looking for records of hush-money payments to women who had affairs with our so-called president.

Washington (CNN)The FBI raid on President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen sought information that included payments allegedly made to keep women silent about affairs with Trump more than a decade ago.

A source familiar with the matter told CNN Tuesday that a focus of Monday’s raid was to seek records on the deal set up between ex-Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal and a company that reportedly paid her amid the 2016 presidential campaign cycle to keep her account from publication.

My gut tells me that there’s more to this than “the president had some affairs before he got into office.” This was apparently run through the financial crimes division of the FBI in NYC. I’m guessing the guys and gals in that unit aren’t much the types that fuck around.

There’s got to be more to the story …

Unless those payments came from less than legal places, and the raid confirms the link …

We’re almost at parity between number of people who’ve resigned/been fired and the size of Trump’s Inauguration crowd.

I could not care less about what consenting adults did in their spare time, but if the payments made were illegal in nature, then it is time to air all the details.

If the payments were a bribe, circumvented campaign finance laws, broke financial reporting laws, perpetrated a fraud on the courts, etc., then those rise to the level requiring investigations.

The fact Trump apparently bedded an adult film star isn’t the important detail. It’s what Cohen and Trump said and did re: payment of $130,000 to her that matters.

The lies and the coverup will get Trump and Cohen in the end.

And once the investigators dig into the Daniels’ payment shenanigans they’ll uncover other criminal acts too, because that’s the way both Trump and Cohen roll.

Why do anything if you can overdo it. /trump motto.

Exactly. Geoffrey Berman, the US Attorney who signed off on these warrants was Giuliani’s law partner, donated the maximum personal amount to both Trump’s primary & general election campaigns and was appointed directly by Trump. The only reason a guy like that green-lights something like this is because there’s so much overwhelming evidence backing it up that to choose not to would eventually lead to criminal corruption / obstruction charges against him.

I’m in Atlanta, waiting for my next flight to Louisville. I paid a premium for first class seats but it’s worth it for the feeling of not being stuffed in a middle seat in coach.

I don’t know why, but I have got this uneasy feeling Trump is going to do something colossally stupid while I’m traveling. I hope to help I’m wrong.

Berman was apparently recused from this investigation, and it was apparently Rosenstien who signed off on the warrant petition going to a judge. At least that’s what I’ve heard on CNN while driving around. But otherwise, yeah, I completely agree.

I’m beginning to think that anyone who holds office above the local level should be required to put their assets into blind trusts similar to what, historically, US presidents have done.

I am willing to make an exception for family businesses, so long as those businesses don’t do work with the state/federal government (exception: POTUS)

Local politicians around the country are infamous for being caught in graft and corruption scandals.

Say for the sake of argument I own a grocery store in town. Someone else in town (or from outside it) applies for a building permit and zoning regulation change to put up another grocery store which would compete with mine.

In my town, two village trustees have to approve a building permit, and three a zoning use change. The permit is not a vote (the two trustees either sign it or reject it), the zoning change requires first a public hearing then a public vote. If I can convince two other trustees to vote “nay,” the zoning change goes down in defeat.

Yep, just looked it up.

The acting head of the office, Robert Khuzami—a Trump appointee, for those keeping score at home—signed off on the warrant

So that’s still two Trump appointees and a Federal Judge signing off on this action.

Despite claims of an “unprecedented” number of death threats to justify his security spending, Senate Democrats have obtained internal EPA documents they say show no evidence of specific, credible, physical threats against Scott Pruitt.

Confidential security assessments in the Environmental Protection Agency show no evidence of specific, credible, physical threats against Administrator Scott Pruitt, despite claims that an “unprecedented” number of death threats justify his outsized security spending, according to a review by Senate Democrats.

Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee wrote in a letter Tuesday that they have reviewed security assessments describing 16 purported threats against Pruitt. They include public protests, criticism of Pruitt’s policies and other activities protected by the First Amendment.

Another Trump Regime liar.

Taxi medallions? It used to be they were more valuable than gold but with Uber and that crowd, they’ve sunk in value. I wonder if Cohen invested in medallions and got caught in the decline?

That’s some hard drugs right wingers, including Trump, have to take to claim that Mueller’s a Democratic party conspiracy theory.

Mueller on down are all GOPers or were Trump appointees. They’re all either recusing or approving the investigations into Trump. There aren’t Democrats in the chain of command because Trump’s purged them all thus far.

Wont stop Trump from claiming a witch hunt though.

Though when Mueller does nothing except get indictments and guilty pleas from Trump cronies, it does look kind odd that everyone in Trumpworld is wearing witch outfits.

Agree, he took the Mueller team’s referral and decided that SDNY should be the ones to run with it. Given how sensitive this was it’s reasonable to assume he also demanded a final review of the paperwork they were filing with the Court. This warrant got put under a scanning electron microscope before it went live.

Apparently he thinks he could fire Rosenstein and put someone like Pence or even himself in as a temporary replacement and that would give them the legal rights to carry the job responsibilities one being able to fire Mueller.

We tend to get cynical about that here at times - “It’s a company,” “if you’re not paying, you’re the product,” etc. - but I think people should be realistically able to expect that if they don’t give explicit permission to release something - and explicit doesn’t mean “you agreed on line 1237 of the 400 page legal agreement” - that companies are expected to keep the information private. Instead of expecting our current state, we should demand better.

Maybe, but the “lesson” that, as Jeet puts it,

I still think the idea that we’ve “learned” anything is overly optimistic.

2000 & 2004 failed to teach the Bros that their “revolution” isn’t coming and that the GOP capitalizes readily on their “principles,” so why would 2016 do anything to change that?

Then again, neither are vaccines, but…

There are a few other lessons, but the big ones seem to be:
1. “You” can run for office.
2. Democrats need to run people everywhere.
3. People need to come out to vote.

I definitely don’t think you wanted him to win and I get how tempting this argument is especially for generally optimistic folks like you and I but there is no way having a white supremacist admin and resurgence is good for America. That’s why whites on the left tended to stand by while blacks were screaming about how all of this was crap. Then Trump was elected and suddenly they found out a small part of what minorities have known.

I think the only way that will change is to change the way history is taught in this country. I have thought of a better name for the subject: Political History. The thing is, every class in school is a history class, but they are history classes of their particular topics. History really is about politics. We should teach it as such.

I do. We have mail voting and paper ballots, and routinely have 80% voter turnout in this state. Conservatives love heavy voter turnout and fair elections if they can win them.

Conservatism only has one goal, gaining and maintaining power.

I wonder if such Christians would actually consider someone who said those things to be a trusted voice. Possibly, but I’m not convinced. I think their religion depends on believing the opposite of that, and their trusted voices are those on FOX and in the churches who tell them to hate.

A 12-year-old boy was arrested in Philadelphia on Saturday after he was reportedly seen walking the street with a loaded AR-15 rifle.

Philadelphia police said 19-year-old Michael Mitchell was armed with a handgun while he was arguing with his neighbor, CBS Philly reported on Monday.

During the dispute, Mitchell reportedly asked his 12-year-old brother to go grab the AR-15.

The boy was spotted walking up the street with the loaded weapon, which was legally owned by his older brother.

Both guns were inside a car when police arrived, but the teenager reportedly tried to reach for the rifle.

“I opened up the back door of the black Ford Taurus and he reached for the AR,” Officer Krzysztof Wrzesinski said. “That’s when I yelled at him to ‘stop’ and he immediately stopped and complied.”

I kinda resent being called a victim of conservative propaganda. Note that the Ravenous Cofveve gave a figure of 55% Christian — and I said “a significant number,” which 45% certainly is. Moreover, I strongly suspect that many of the Bernie folks (certainly most of the several I know) are irreligious, and that this in part caused them to snicker at Hillary’s excellent relationship with black churchgoers. I’m calling for both believers and nonbelievers to respect the other, since (among Democrats) they share far more moral beliefs than not. I want Bernie to go away, but I do want his supporters to vote Democrat.

I’m not sure where the figure of 55% comes from.
people-press.org
(near the bottom of the first page and top of second page, religious affiliation by party)

Conservatives have been pounding “liberals hate Christians or Christianity.” They’ve been doing that longer than I’ve been alive … during the desegregation fights they were arguing liberals were standing against the order of God.

I did not call you a “victim of conservative propaganda.” I noted conservative propaganda has seeped into discussions on the left.

As for Sanders, perhaps he should go away and knit. /s

For Chrissake, why take that conservative rubbish seriously? As for propaganda seeping in … that’s essentially what today’s Facebook hearing is all about!

I don’t take it seriously. I imagine the overwhelming majority of people here don’t take it seriously.

But a lot of people do take it seriously, hence the letter to my newspaper last Thursday claiming atheists are the cause of moral decay and mass-murder in schools, because we “banned prayer” in schools and my immediate rebuttal on Saturday in the paper.

There is a reason the woman who called me from here in town told me thank you for my rebuttal and outed herself over the phone as an atheist, noting she has to go to church here in town because she fears discrimination and loss of her job.

There is a reason I got an anonymous Thank You card in the mail for my letter, and several calls since - a lot of people do take that rubbish seriously.

The most viewed article I ever had at Daily Kos was a response to a front-pager there arguing atheists should sit down and shut up.

Even if you don’t take that conservative agitprop seriously or give it a moment’s notice, a lot of liberals do.

Because Another Member Said Enough Atheist Diaries I Am Writing an Atheist Diary (goes to Daily Kos, posted September 12, 2014).

But, tell me this, what do you think elections would have been like this fall had Clinton won?

The silver lining of this election is that the Democrats have a good chance of controlling the White House and Congress in 2021-22. If Clinton had been elected President, the GOP would’ve retained control of Congress until at least 2023.

Well, lessee. My first girlfriend gets $25,000/month rent support since I own the house and charge her that much, for which she gets a 50% kickback. We each get $8500/month for each of our two children, the authorities having never noticed that these are now in their 30s and 40s. I also get a pittance in military retirement plus $650,000 in residual graft from defense contractors and Chinese agents plus $50,000/month for medicare, for which I get a 75% kickback from crooked liberal doctors, most of whom are Jews or Muslims. The second girlfriend gets $86,450 in WIC and Food Stamps for god knows how many non-existent children she claims. She shares this loot with me and girlfriend #1, as well as the corrupt bureaucrats who approve her applications, then sells the surplus to Colombian drug cartels, who use it to compensate their hit-men and legislators.
This is not even mentioning my farm subsidies or the tax breaks I get for declaring my estate a holy place of the Cult of Cthulhu.

That’s fair. I don’t have any data to back it up, but logically, I’m guessing the failure to run candidates in some races probably has an effect on turnout. Sort of a negative coattails effect “they don’t really care about us because they won’t even run someone in this district, so why should I bother voting for president/governor/senator? They’re just going to ignore us!” Now maybe that district level candidate loses 4:1, but that’s better than putting nothing on the board.

In FOXworld, this is true. FOX viewers will never hear about any Trump scandals, because the control the network has over them is absolute. Their world is completely separate from ours, even if the names remain the same.

Furthermore, FOX communicates in emotions. So a FOX show may have words on it that describe some Trump evil, but the emotions conveyed, through friendly pundits and dismissive reporting, are that there is no scandal. To a FOX cultist, there is only glory and greatness in the Trump White House. They literally can’t hear any different.

I made it to Louisville and my hotel. I think I startled the desk agent when I told her why I’m here (“picketing ‘Together For The Gospel 2018’ because the promoters didn’t seem to have a problem with a speaker who covered up child abuse at his church”). Sometime in the last month or so I have gone *sproing* so now I look more middle aged and really not the someone you’d expect to be picketing a church gathering.

From The Daily Beast article:

Trump must know this may be one of the most dangerous moments in his entire life, not just his presidency. The likelihood is that Mueller and the FBI are now in possession of the Black Books of Trump, NDAs from enough of Trump’s various affairs that you can staff a 12-pole strip club with plenty of girls left for the Champagne rooms. It’s only speculation at this point, but it’s quite likely that Cohen was the keeper of many of Trump’s lending documents, contracts, business arrangements, and the Kryptonite of Trump’s fragile self-worth: the long-sought tax returns.

Michael Moore taunts Trump: ‘Grow a pair’ and fire Mueller already

Filmmaker Michael Moore taunted President Trump in a lengthy Facebook post Tuesday, telling him that it’s “time to grow a pair” and fire special counsel Robert Mueller.
thehill.com

I’m sorry but Moore’s shit is tired. If Trump fires Mueller, and he very well may, that’s not some obvious checkmate scenario that ends his Presidency. Even if it ends up helping Democrats win in November that’s a long way off. Meanwhile it’s just another shit show erosion of our democracy and rule of law and not something we should be joking about.

What is that loser Jindal doing these days? He seems to have dropped into a black hole; does he have a Fox News gig, or some other grift?

Former Gov. Bobby Jindal has taken a new job as an operating adviser for Ares Management, a global investment firm based in Los Angeles, according to the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report.

The publicly traded company says it has $104 billion in assets and has 15 offices around the world.

“The firm is large enough to make an impact, and the people are high quality,” Jindal wrote in an email to friends obtained by the Business Report. “I have enjoyed the private equity work I have done over the last several months, and am confident this platform will allow me to help portfolio companies accelerate their growth while also making a real impact in the changing health care environment.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger says he’s resigning from office amid talk of an FBI investigation into his activities.

Rosenberger released a statement Tuesday night saying that while he believes all of his actions as speaker have been “ethical and lawful,” he understands the inquiry could take some time to resolve.

The term-limited Republican from Clarksville says there are many important issues facing the state and Ohioans deserve elected leaders who are able to devote their “full and undivided attention” to these matters.

The 36-year-old Rosenberger told the Dayton Daily News on Friday that he hired Columbus attorney David Axelrod, a former federal prosecutor, “as a precautionary measure.” He says the FBI has been asking questions but has not subpoenaed him or told him he’s under investigation.

Rosenberger says his resignation will take effect May 1.

re: #425 Feline Fearless Leader

Rummaging in a closet for stuff to pack or throw out turned up two old-style film cameras. (Canon AT-1 and a Canon AE-1 Program.) Plus two 100-200mm zoom lenses, a few other accessories, and 8 rolls of unexposed 200- or 400- speed film.

Any Lizards know of any photo buffs or locations possibly interested in older equipment like this? I doubt the stuff is compatible with modern digital cameras at all. And the film is probably at least 15-20 years old.

You may wish to consider donating the cameras to a High School photography program or student. Or maybe a youth group.

My next door neighbor’s son was in a high school photography program and was studying film photography. I give him my father’s old AE-1 and lenses from the 1970’s.

I’m actually tired of this trope. Democrats passed a stimulus to get out of the Great Recession, passed the ACA, raised taxes on the rich, and got legislation through that ended DADT. And what happened? They lost elections.

Clinton’s turn to the right, after Democrats passed tax increases on the wealthy to get out of the recession was caused by shellacking they took in ‘94.

And we all know what happened after Democrats voted for Medicare, Medicaid, the CRA, and VRA.

That’s why I don’t feel bad for him and Shapiro. They choose to associate with bigots.

Very interesting. Not surprising though. Ohio Republicans are like all Republicans right now, corrupt to the bone and in it for themselves.

Yep. Ben worked for Bannon for years and then cries about anti Semitic bs from him and Breitbart. No one deserves that shit but Shapiro and Horowitz are intellectually dishonest horse shit salesmen.

I called that shot earlier today, when it came out that he signed off on recusing the subordinate attorney who would have nixed the search warrant on Cohen.

Dana Boente… that’s a name we haven’t heard since…. he was named general counsel to the FBI by the director Christopher Wray.

He was previously the EDVA. That Boente’s got notes corroborating/identifying obstruction of justice shouldn’t be all that surprising. Everyone who took notes after meeting with Trump came to same conclusion: Comey among them.

re: #355 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Black people sold black people to white people, who sold them to white people (sometimes multiple times), who treated them (better or worse) as property. I fail to see how white people have some magical moral high ground here.

White people owned slaves. And it took a war to make them stop. And then they’ve tried to rewrite it because they weren’t supposed to lose.

Whenever they tried to make the story more complicated than that they’re just trying to change the subject.

From an earlier thread. (Finally caught up.)

You may wish to consider donating the cameras to a High School photography program or student. Or maybe a youth group.

My next door neighbor’s son was in a high school photography program and was studying film photography. I give him my father’s old AE-1 and lenses from the 1970’s.

Thanks for the suggestion. That will be the first place I check.

re: #26 Ace-o-aces

I see the raid included Cohen’s “taxi medallion” holdings. There’s been some shady Ukrainian mob related shenanigans related to Cohen’s partners in that business. Example:

buzzfeed.com

Can you saw money laundering?

That probably where he got the cash to pay off Stormy. Small untraceable bills from untraceable cash transactions.
