New York Times Editorial Board: The Law Is Coming, Mr. Trump

Their newsroom continues publishing curiously non-judgmental articles about Donald Trump and seemingly endless sympathetic profiles of his base of delusional supporters, but at least the New York Times editorial board is telling it straight: The Law Is Coming, Mr. Trump.

This is your president, ladies and gentlemen. This is how Donald Trump does business, and these are the kinds of people he surrounds himself with.

Mr. Trump has spent his career in the company of developers and celebrities, and also of grifters, cons, sharks, goons and crooks. He cuts corners, he lies, he cheats, he brags about it, and for the most part, he’s gotten away with it, protected by threats of litigation, hush money and his own bravado. Those methods may be proving to have their limits when they are applied from the Oval Office. Though Republican leaders in Congress still keep a cowardly silence, Mr. Trump now has real reason to be afraid. A raid on a lawyer’s office doesn’t happen every day; it means that multiple government officials, and a federal judge, had reason to believe they’d find evidence of a crime there and that they didn’t trust the lawyer not to destroy that evidence.

I can’t wait to start hearing what has been discovered in the material seized from Cohen. I keep dreaming about that smoking gun. May it find its way into Mueller’s hands.

I again cannot get over how Trump thought that being elected president would effectively shield him from having any of this come out instead of heightening the likelihood that it would.

He could have continued being a sleazy businessman and been able to settle things out of court, surrounded by people bound to silence by NDAs.

He did not seem to grasp that public servants operate under a different set of rules.

And one has to wonder how many black people are in federal or state prison because of marijuana charges.

It’s not because blacks use or sell drugs at a greater rate than whites. Police enforcement has its priorities and basis in discriminatory behavior, and that means that police disproportionately go after blacks more than they do white, and blacks get higher sentences compared to whites in similar situations.

Actually, don’t wonder. We’ve got statistics for all this:

Number of arrests in 2016 in the U.S. for drug law violations: 1,572,579
Number of these arrests that were for possession only: 1,249,025 (84 percent)
Number of people arrested for a marijuana law violation in 2016: 653,249
Number of those charged with marijuana law violations who were arrested for possession only: 574,641 (89 percent)
Number of Americans incarcerated in 2016 in federal, state and local prisons and jails: 2,157,000, the highest incarceration rate in the world

Proportion of people incarcerated for a drug offense in state prison who are Black or Latino, although these groups use and sell drugs at similar rates as whites: 57 percent

Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland, told his staff this morning he is retiring.

I guess a little off-topic, but you know the little thing from a recent article that keeps catching in my brain? It’s this bit in Olivia Nuzzi’s puffball profile of Hope Hicks:

“He doesn’t write anything down,” one source close to the White House told me. “He doesn’t type, he dictates. ‘Take this down, take this down: Trump: richest man on Earth.’ ”

It’s so bizarre that he’s so obsessed with something like that. He’s such a shell of a human, filled with nothing but a desperate belief that having all the money will let him push everyone else around.

Also, I wonder if he thinks being president means he owns the entire country, like he could sell St. Louis for petty cash…

He did it while fighting against casinos before the WH.

He’s stuck it to Native Americans over Bears Ears Natl Monument and shrinking it despite the cultural and historical nature of the area Obama set aside to give energy companies and mining entities a mineral rights grab opportunity.

He stuck it to Native Americans via Zinke, who improperly and illegally reasssigned/dumped a bunch of Native Americans from various posts to install lackeys to do his bidding.

The obvious answer for Republicans that don’t want a bill to protect the special counsel would be this:

The proper check against the president moving to remove the special counsel would be impeachment. Just as when President Nixon moved against Special Counsel Cox, to do so without sufficient cause would be an abuse of power and obstruction of justice.

But they don’t have the testicular fortitude to say that publicly, so Trump continues to act like a clown.

ABC: Comey compares Trump to mob boss

I really hope that Comey’s testimony and going public helps take Trump out. That said, I will go to my grave holding him as being a major factor in getting Trump elected, with his “I’m not saying Hillary’s a criminal, but…” October surprise bullshit.

A much better writer at Jezebel, I think, put it more succinctly than I did: Comey thought he could get a little bit pregnant with Trump and it blew up in his face. Show Donnie Babyfingers that he could be useful in a new administration, and then found out kind of fucking monster he was really dealing with.

And, yeah, I know about the Ashcroft standoff. I think the whiff of power that Trump presented him caused Comey to throw whatever fucking lessons he learned about that incident out the window.

In addition, the former Republican Whitewater prosecutor in Comey couldn’t give up the chance to fuck over Clinton when the opportunity presented itself.

I realize I’m the only who thinks this, but I can’t fucking stand this “St. Comey the Martyr” mantle everyone is putting on him, while ignoring the role he played getting us here in the first place.

I don’t think that’s it — it’s more likely that he was getting pressure from the Trumpland FBI office in NY and, since, like most people (not me though!), he was certain that Clinton was going to win, he didn’t believe that his October surprise would harm her. However, this makes me wonder about the NY FBI office — could they be all mobbed up? After all they knew Trump was a real estate magnate in New York; they had to realize the implications. So are they actually infested with either traditional mobsters or Russian mobsters?

There’s a certain logic to Ryan stepping down as Speaker now, it potentially gives the GOP someone to rally around as a congressional leader in the midterms. It can sort of work to give voters a sense of continuity, if they are inclined to support Republicans (narrator: they are not). And perhaps rallying around a new speaker gives them a chance to try and do something before the election (narrator: that would be a mistake).

On the flip side, the new Speaker could be a Trumpian disaster. In which case, it could make the GOP losses in November even worse. My guess is the leadership in place right now sees this as the more likely outcome (imagine the new Speaker deciding to take up Wall funding or a bill to reduce legal immigration or some other wingnut wet dream in the six months before the midterms).

Per the Secretary of State’s webiste:

The first day to circulate nomination papers is April 15, 2018. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on June 1, 2018.

See the attached Candidates Tracking by Office list for candidates who have filed a campaign registration statement with the Wisconsin Ethics Commission or a declaration of candidacy form with the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

Until the filing period begins, the Federal Elections Commission website often has more current information about who is running for U.S. Senate and Representative to Congress.

Not entirely sure what circulating nomination papers means but I knew I’d heard a deadline around the 15th.

Ooooh damn, read this (by a Canadian reporter, of course, because American MSM journalists would engage in much pearl-clutching at the oh-so-“uncivilized” tone e_e)

Poor Laura Ingraham, the delicate snowflake.

Ingraham, who began her career in university outing gay students, probably thought David Hogg, a 17-year-old survivor of the recent Florida high school massacre, would crumple, or maybe start crying — you know, the way sensitive liberals tend to do — when she unleashed one of her ad hominem attacks on him…Instead, Hogg turned around and pasted her. He in fact out-Foxed her.

It was exactly the sort of hardball that far-right activists play, and boy, did it work. Ingraham’s advertisers began deserting her Fox show, even after she rushed out a sanctimonious apology “in the spirit of Holy Week,” which was promptly rejected by Hogg.

The flying monkeys who take their cues from Fox and Breitbart, and swarm in the service of America’s boorish president, are determined to take down these damned young lefties, and are going about it with their usual viciousness.

Happily, the students are not relenting.

Unlike the Occupy Wall Street movement, whose members frittered away strong political traction by talking themselves to death, Hogg, Gonzalez and company clearly intend to weaponize theirs and adopt the tactics of their enemies, which is exactly what needs to be done.

You’re not the only one. Comey’s ratfucking is as much to blame as any other major factor for the turd in the white house.

Actually, his businesses have been so heavily leveraged and gone through so many bankruptcies that they have outside board members now (in one case the terms of the bankruptcies required him and Ivanka to give up their leadership positions).

Fair enough. Didn’t know that, though it is not surprising.

So Dershowitz is floating the idea that Rod Rosenstein could be forced to recuse himself from the Mueller investigation due to him signing the Comey letter.

That is some below the belt politics since Rosenstein gave Trump the letter to fire Comey. And now he would turn on him to get maybe the third-in-line in the Justice Department (or someone???) to dump Mueller.

And that is going to take some jumping through hoops law work to pull that off I would think. This must be the “right to fire Mueller” thing SHS was floating yesterday.

Of course Dershowitz is saying he has given no advice to Trump.

Don’t you believe him?

to make you feel good.
So I went - he has, like, a little bathroom off his kitchen, and I went in there,

had cut a slit at the top, and the pants were men’s pajama pants.

Millcreek teachers encouraged to fight shooter if options fail

Teachers aren’t expected to confront a gunman with the bats, schools Superintendent William Hall said.

“The bats are more symbolic than anything,” Hall said. “However, we do want to have one consistent tool to have at somebody’s disposal in a classroom in the event they have to fight.”

Each of the district’s approximately 500 teachers was given a 16-inch bat Monday during in-service training on how to respond to school shootings. The revised Trojan Response plan includes more options than a lockdown, Hall said.

“It’s not about just hiding and waiting,” he said. “There are options, and one of those is to fight.”

Deep state lies and fake news.

No, kidding. He said that. Saw him interviewed earlier.

Those are just a couple of the words everyone will be hearing this political system.

I am already hearing a guy running for state senate here in Ohio, Larry Householder, who gets those two words in a commercial plus NRA Grade A+ and taking on the Never Trumpers in his party (Republican of course).

He is supposedly getting his backers to help fund other candidates in the state senate so he can try to get them to elect him Speaker of the House. He is calling others Never Trumpers to slime them.

That Thanksgiving my older half-brother made a giant scene over it, screaming at me that I wanted “to give everything to the *n-words*.” Everyone was mortified, good times. He would’ve been a huge Trumper if he hadn’t died a few years ago from complications of alcoholic cirrhosis.

I voted in ‘96 and remember being very underwhelmed by both Clinton and Dole. As I’ve mentioned here before, I voted for Dole because that’s what good Republicans did back then. But I remember saying to my mom at one point, possibly on election night, something along the lines of “well, he’s done a good job so far” about Clinton. So it probably isn’t much of a surprise that I wasn’t a Republican for many or election cycles.

Because there aren’t enough security threats due to people failing security clearances and/or lying/omitting key details on their SF86 or financial disclosures.

Everyone in Trumpworld reeks.

Heh, I voted presidential elections since 1972 when I turned 18 that summer.

But it took Clinton winning in 1992 for my oldest brother go off me on a similar rant one night. But worse.

He was worried not only about “them” Blacks, but Clinton was allowing gays in the military too. Double block-headed thinking.

He started talking shit about maybe looking into joining Aryan Nation and crap like that. I got up and walked out. Been chilly ever since. I know he has not changed at all. So, I don’t subject myself to his idiocy. I love the guy, but I can’t take the BS. For family peace it is best not to rock his boat. That also means you have to keep distance.

Clinton was most definitely putting something in the America political water. It was still running through November 2016.

It’s a shame that Ryan won’t let this get to the floor in the House if it gets 60 votes in the Senate:

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, Chris Coons, D-Delaware, Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, and Cory Booker, D-New Jersey introduced the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, which protect Mueller, including ensure that the special counsel can only be fired for “good cause” by a senior Justice Department official.

Then again, maybe the announcement today will give us No Fucks to Give Paul Ryan.

I doubt it. Paul Ryan is a coward and an asshat. If anything, I could envision his final act being some gianormous “fuck you” to progressive America.

Complicit? Check
Obstructed Merrick Garland nomination? Check
Cast deciding vote on Devos? Check
Passed tax scam bill? Check
Laughed at joke claiming Russia had Rohrabacher and Trump on the payroll? Check.
Complicit? Check
Complicit? Check.

Yeah, that sums that all up.

I like to think that my half-brother was just way ahead of his time in understanding what the GOP was turning into. At the time everyone was just like “WOW, where the fuck did that come from?” But now, it all makes sense.

I would never count on that occurring. Not Ryan. He doesn’t have the guts. He’ll disappear out the back door as daddy concerned, so being squishy will be seen as cute by “The Trump Base™”

Yes. This MO governor has been living a double life, and the only question is how long it has lasted. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if it turns into a murder case.

National Pet Day? Sure I’ll share pictures of mine. :)

First up are the 4 dogs. All Belgian Malinois. They range in age from 5 months to 7 years.

The 3 cats are all older. They’re all 13-15 years old and in really good health considering their age. :)

I struggle with one pet. I’m beyond impressed with you Dr. Doolittle;s & your menageries.

Frank, how old would your brother have been right now?

Mine is 78. I was just wondering. That war baby generation I do believe are the start of the Fox News crowd and it has grown from there.

Your posts, by the way, are bringing back chilling memories. My brother was almost foaming at the mouth. Well, spittin’ his beer mad anyway. His wife and one daughter ran out of the room just before I left.

HAH! Nothing smaller than a cat for me. My wife and I will always have a cat in the house just to train dogs, but we will never have more than 1 again—at least that is our plan in the future. We both compete in multiple dog sports so we’re constantly training, competing, or just doing stuff with our dogs. On top of our full time jobs it doesn’t leave us time to do anything else. :) So a hamster wouldn’t be a good fit.
