Oops! Now Trump Wants to Get Back Into the TPP, After Burning Our Partners All Over the World

Politics • Views: 28,172

Here’s some news about which I can’t even: Trump weighs rejoining Trans-Pacific Partnership amid trade dispute with China.

President Trump told top administration officials Thursday to look at rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a major shift on the sprawling multination trade pact he rejected just days after taking office.

[…]

Trump gave the new orders to U.S. Trade Representative Robert E. Lighthizer and National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow during a meeting with lawmakers and governors in the White House Cabinet Room Thursday, according to several GOP senators in attendance.

[…]

Trump then told Lighthizer and Kudlow to “take a look at getting us back into that agreement, on our terms of course,” Thune said. “He was very I would say bullish about that.”

“On our terms, of course!”

Puerto Rico hasn’t even gotten to 100% power restoration. They’ve been at around 95% when last updated on April 5.

And now this?! A single tree knocked out essentially 1/3 of their grid? That’s insane.

UPDATE:
Then again, the big northeast blackout was due to a single feeder power line having a fault (shorting due to contact with a tree) and operators not seeing the problem, and a cascading failure thereafter.

Daily Kos
is all over that:

The battle plan against Comey, obtained by CNN, calls for branding the nation’s former top law enforcement official as “Lyin’ Comey” through a website, digital advertising and talking points to be sent to Republicans across the country before his memoir is released next week. The White House signed off on the plan, which is being overseen by the Republican National Committee.

Democrats have few reasons to love Comey. His last-minute letter to Congress, reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails, didn’t just claim every single column of the New York Times’ front page, but very likely flipped the outcome of the election. Without Comey’s self-indulgent chastisement of Clinton (over what Comey himself admitted were offenses that no reasonable prosecutor would follow up) and without his jumping to reopen his investigation (over what turned out to be inconsequential evidence), Donald Trump would heading up nothing more powerful than an infomercial, threatening nothing more vital than the life savings of the gullible.

But the plan to combat Comey shows more clearly than ever that the old Republican Party has been swept away. What’s in its place is the next product to follow Trump Water, Trump Vodka, and Trump University. It’s the Trump Party, whose entire reason for being is … Trump. And for that purpose, every instrument in their arsenal is aimed at protecting Trump from what Comey has to reveal.

“Comey is a liar and a leaker and his misconduct led both Republicans and Democrats to call for his firing,” Republican chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement to CNN. “If Comey wants the spotlight back on him, we’ll make sure the American people understand why he has no one but himself to blame for his complete lack of credibility.”

Hearsay has multiple exceptions and given that both Comey and McCabe both indicated that they were keeping records, then they may also have FRCP 803(6) on top of 803(1) and 803(5) as well:

Records of a Regularly Conducted Activity. A record of an act, event, condition, opinion, or diagnosis if:

(A) the record was made at or near the time by — or from information transmitted by — someone with knowledge;

(B) the record was kept in the course of a regularly conducted activity of a business, organization, occupation, or calling, whether or not for profit;

(C) making the record was a regular practice of that activity;

(D) all these conditions are shown by the testimony of the custodian or another qualified witness, or by a certification that complies with Rule 902(11) or (12) or with a statute permitting certification; and

(E) the opponent does not show that the source of information or the method or circumstances of preparation indicate a lack of trustworthiness.

Finger cots. You’ve heard of fingerless gloves? These are like gloveless fingers. Or condoms for each digit.

They have a variety of uses, including medical. Watchmakers use them to keep fingerprints off the parts, since most steel watch parts are NOT stainless. I’ve found decades-old fingerprints, etched into the surface of watch plates, or the mirror-polished winding wheels.

I’d say it’s a perfect opportunity for any up-and-coming white supremacy group to buy advertising time. Should be pretty damn cheap by now.

Some of them, like Nicole, Ana Navarro and others need to say they are done with them, join the Democrats and really send a message.

The only way that party changes is with tough love and hammers. It needs to be torn down and rebuilt. The rats in it can start something else so everyone decent can ignore them. Start the Tea Party or Freedom Party or whatever and go fuck yourselves.

I don’t know Paul Ryan and don’t really care whether he is a ” good guy “or not. He is third in line to the Presidency. Why is he being infantized and talked about like he is the outgoing Rotary Club President. He failed to stand up for civility, decency and impt US institutions

one of the most powerful jobs in our government (ok used to be). and whether you call it 2nd or 3d in succession, what he really failed to do is run the house as one of the two unified representative bodies of all the people

ryan was elected to represent his district of which there are 435. there is only one speaker. when he was elected speaker he became speaker for all americans. he failed at that miserably.

mitch too, of course

If all the reasonable people leave, then there’s no chance for the party to be rebuilt. A new party would have to be built in its place. And, historically, that’s what has happened in our history. The Whigs started losing members and weren’t suddenly rebuilt, a new party (the Republicans) eventually rose and replaced them.

It would be interesting to see if a new part could rise. The Reform Party tried that in the late 90s, and it failed - in part because they didn’t have a guiding ideology beyond “I’m Ross Perot” and eventually fell victim to the likes of Trump, Buchanan, and Duke.

It would probably take a decade, at the very least, to replace one of the two major parties, in the best circumstances. That would require, in addition to the whole ideology/governing philosophy bit, building a ground game at the state and local level in addition to trying to run at the national level.

Shady deals abound for the Trump Crime Family:

A small-time scam artist gave Trump a mansion for $0. Why?

In this enclave of celebrity and tremendous wealth, it was a real estate megadeal that made little sense.

In 2008, an Egyptian man with a reputation for small-time financial scams bought an opulent 10,400-square-foot mansion on famed Rodeo Drive.

Sale price, according to public records: $10.3 million.

Then, six weeks later, he transferred the mansion to a shell company set up by a brash New York billionaire - for no money at all.

The billionaire was Donald Trump. The home was next door to another mansion he’d purchased for $7 million a year earlier and just down the street from The Beverly Hills Hotel, where two women say they had affairs with Trump around the same time.

[…]

At the time, a senior escrow officer named Susan B. Nichols supervised the company’s Beverly Hills office. In an interview, Nichols, who is now retired, said she reviewed every deed processed by the office but had no memory of the Trump deals.

In looking over copies of the deeds, Nichols said she never would have approved filing the document granting the house to Girgis unless she had seen a sales contract with Girgis’ name on it - and only after payment had been deposited in an escrow account. She also said she would have approved signing the house over to Trump only if “it was kosher.”

The experts consulted by Reveal said this outcome was theoretically possible - but so implausible that they had never heard of such a thing.

[…]

The intermediaries between the long time owner, family of former dictator of Gabon, and the Egyptian scam artist, were some GOP deep pockets, Leonard and Selma Fisch (technically, their estate.)

It’s all very typical, in the way dictators and corrupt people work.

And of course that hasn’t happened for over 160 years. Eventually as the old white man demographic continues to die off, more centrist GOP politicians will move the party back toward the center, like the Vermont governor who just signed gun control legislation. Hard to say how long this will take though. If Texas turns at least purple if not blue anytime soon it will be very difficult for the GOP to win national elections without substantially reforming itself. The barriers to a new party are so substantial in the US I don’t expect the GOP to simply be displaced.

In their model the sun is actually much smaller and much closer. The moon is also a translucent disk or something. It’s utterly insane (I occasionally check a flat earth instagram feed for lols, Kelly Slater (yes, the surfer) is constantly in their comments debunking shit and making fun of them). They think the reason days are shorter (in the northern hemisphere) in the winter is because the sun has to move faster around the outside of the disk. Michiko Kakutani:

The central themes that Comey returns to throughout this impassioned book are the toxic consequences of lying; and the corrosive effects of choosing loyalty to an individual over truth and the rule of law. Dishonesty, he writes, was central “to the entire enterprise of organized crime on both sides of the Atlantic,” and so, too, were bullying, peer pressure and groupthink — repellent traits shared by Trump and company, he suggests, and now infecting our culture.

“We are experiencing a dangerous time in our country,” Comey writes, “with a political environment where basic facts are disputed, fundamental truth is questioned, lying is normalized and unethical behavior is ignored, excused or rewarded.”

But that doesn’t make sense either. If the earth is flat and the sun is smaller and closer, then it would STILL rise and set everywhere at the same time, but the size (area of the sky taken up by the sun) would change over the course of the day, and that change would be different depending on where you are - large at sunrise, small at sunset if you’re in the East, small at sunrise and large at sunset if you’re in the West, and small at sunrise and sunset but larger at noon if you’re in the middle.

Oh, believe me, I know. The cosmology is the craziest part of their “logic.” I think the argument is (haven’t seen it in a while) something along the lines of “it’s a disk/spot light” not some glowing orb in space. (Also, it’s the same size as the moon, which is also closer than you think)

Most of the time it’s “there’s no curvature” or something about water always finding a level and what not.

re: #177 Blind Frog Belly White

But seriously - Flat Earth Cosmology must be really tricky. For example, if the earth is flat, and the sun is 93 Million miles away, the sun would rise, and set, everywhere on Earth at the same time.

i once read a supposedly scientific explanation that the “earth” is like a tennis ball cut open. we “live on the flat inside

or something

it tried to incorporate curvature with flatness
and still didnt work

while i agree the “movement” is growing, i am certain these people do not “actually” believe any of this nonsense. - not in anything but an argumentally rhetorical way

they want to. they’d like to

and still they know the earth is a ball, that there’s gravity, how the planets generally rotate and orbit, and why the sun rises and sets

“Well it’s clearly ridiculous. What’s he gonna do? Hang it from the carpet?”

Huh. That must be pretty doggone radioactive, then.

That’s what I thought. I wasn’t a nuke, but I do know you don’t “ignite” uranium unless you have a whole bunch of free neutrons flying around.

re: #196 dangerman

It’s actually kind of fun. Remember, as a Scientist, part of my job is to look at hypotheses and determine what predictions they make, and how you’d test them. So, when somebody says, “The earth is flat!”, you say, “Okay, well, if that’s true, then it would be sunrise everywhere at once.”

When they say, “The sun is smaller and closer than they tell you!”, you point out that the sun would STILL rise everywhere at the same time, but would appear much larger in the East than in the West.

If they say the sun is a disk. hold a flat disk in front of them. They’ll see a disc. Move it to either side of them, in a straight line (not turning it), and ask them what they see.

The thing about this shit, like Creationism, conspiracy theories, etc. is that nobody treats them like actual theories - that is, hypotheses - and then determines the predictions they make and requires the hypothesizer to test them.

If nothing else, it’s fun to watch them flail.

Don’t waste too much time trying to make sense out of nonsense.

re: #180 Big Beautiful Door

I’ve never really looked into that delusion, so I don’t know how they explain it.

There are (of course) YouTube videos explaining the theory behind the periodicity observed of the sun if the earth were flat. And, YouTube videos debunking the explanations. And, YouTube videos debunking the debunkings.

It’s turtles allll the way down, Katie. All the way down.
