The Sleaze Comes Out: Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen Negotiated $1.6 Million Hush Money Deal for Top GOP Fundraiser

Politics • Views: 42,759

In the latest stunning development in the ongoing meltdown of the Trump gang, today the Wall Street Journal reports that Trump’s fixer Michael Cohen set up a $1.6 million hush money payout to a Playboy model impregnated by top GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy — a pregnancy that the model terminated.

As deputy finance chairman of the RNC, Broidy is also deeply involved in the Russia probe, through his connection to convicted pedophile George Nader — who set up the now-infamous meeting in the Seychelles between Erik Prince and a shady Russian banker.

The unraveling of this gang of sleazy crooks seems to be accelerating. More, please.

I have to go to NYC tomorrow. If Rod Rosenstein is fired I’m sure there will be demonstrations. Hopefully he won’t be, but if he is I hope to get my fair share of abuse.

Speaking of sleaze…

Doesn’t a whole heck of a lot of this sound just like what is going on in Trump’s DC?

DIsgusting. The freaking University is already in a bad way and this still goes on?

Has a large state university ever been shut down before? I know sports programs get things like a multiple year death penalty, but this is at the top of the university, not the athletic department alone.

ESPN - Larry Nassar victim accuses MSU interim president of offering secret payoff

A sexual assault victim of former sports doctor Larry Nassar confronted Michigan State officials Friday, alleging the school’s interim president offered a payoff to settle her lawsuit and pressured her to do so without her attorney present.

Kaylee Lorincz, who has said Nassar sexually assaulted her when she sought treatment for back pain, said interim president John Engler and his attorney offered her $250,000 when the teen and her mother were at the school a few weeks ago to sign up to speak at Friday’s board of trustees meeting.

According to Lorincz, Engler said to her, “Right now, if I wrote you a check for $250,000, would you take it?”

Lorincz said Engler also claimed that another Nassar victim had given him an amount she would consider to settle with the university. Lorincz said she felt “bullied” by the encounter.

She spoke during a contentious board meeting, where Engler expressed regret for the university’s response to another woman’s federal lawsuit over the school’s handling of rape allegations involving basketball players.

Engler didn’t immediately respond to Lorincz’s comments. His spokeswoman, Emily Gerkin Guerrant, said she was in the room during the conversation and does not remember Engler offering a dollar figure.

“My interpretation of the discussion was not that he was saying, ‘I’m offering you $250,000,’” she said. “It was a discussion about the civil litigation and how it was going on.”

Michigan State special counsel to the president Carol Viventi was also in attendance at that meeting, according to Lorincz.

Lorincz addressed Engler in a room brimming with protesters, parents and sexual assault victims of Nassar, who is serving decades in prison for molesting women and girls and possessing child pornography. Lorincz was among roughly 250 women who gave statements earlier this year during Nassar’s sentencing hearings in two Michigan courtrooms.

Engler became interim president when Lou Anna Simon resigned in January hours after Nassar was sentenced to decades in prison for crimes involving Michigan State athletes. Students remain anxious over the future course of the university, which has yet to choose a permanent replacement for Simon.

In Friday’s board meeting, Engler attempted to steer the focus toward celebrating milestones of the university’s graduating seniors but was frequently usurped by boos and jeers from a crowd clad in teal shirts with the phrase, “I stand with the sister survivors #MeTooMSU.” Some Nassar victims wrapped their mouths with black bands that had the phrase “Silenced” scrawled over them.

Parents of victims were left in the lobby downstairs because their posters of their children’s faces were considered “signs” and thus barred from the meeting room. Protesters who were able to attend instead held up cellphones with childhood pictures of victims.

No recommendation for action in the conclusion:

As detailed in this report, the OIG found that then-Deputy Director Andrew McCabe lacked candor, including under oath, on multiple occasions in connection with describing his role in connection with a disclosure to the WSJ, and that this conduct violated FBI Offense Codes 2.5 and 2.6. The OIG also concluded that McCabe’s disclosure of the existence of an ongoing investigation in the manner described in this report violated the FBI’s and the Department’s media policy and constituted misconduct.

The OIG is issuing this report to the FBI for such action that it deems to be appropriate.

Wasn’t the argument that Sessions et al used in firing McCabe at the last minute that he had no choice based on this report?

Comey has a long record of public service, and Trump has none to speak of more than a year into his presidency. Yet there’s another way in which the virtuous and forthright Comey resembles the degenerate and deceitful Trump. Both are the main characters in their own cinematic dramas, the heroes of their own great epic stories, a mindset that blinds each of them to the consequences of their actions on other people.
Comey cares a great deal about honor, and regards the president as dishonorable. But in 2016, Comey robbed the American people of the opportunity to fairly judge each candidate in the 2016 election. That would be the case even if Clinton had prevailed; that she lost simply dramatizes the consequences of his decision. He chose honor over duty, and the nation, the political process, and the independence of FBI all continue to suffer for it.
Trump fired Comey for self-interested reasons, an act that may amount to obstruction of justice. But by that point, Comey had proven himself unfit to hold his office.

This.

I’ve been saying since the Penn State-Sandusky-Paterno mess that any program that enables abuse and abusers the way Penn State did should get the death penalty for their athletic department.

No probation. No questions. It’d dead and gone. You lose your program for all time because you enabled sexual assaults, abuse, harassment.

It should have happened that way at Penn State.

It should happen with MSU.

Abusers should get punished - Nassar faces life in prison.

Those at MSU who enabled Nassar created a culture of abuse and enabled abuse. That is sufficient in my mind to kill the MSU athletic program and salt the earth.

Everyone else at the university who knew and did nothing, or worse - enabled the abuse - should be facing charges too. If that takes down everyone else at MSU, so be it.

That would be justice.

Trapped In The White House: Many Trump Aides Are Too “Toxic” To Get Jobs

Trump administration officials looking to escape to the private sector are getting a rude awakening: No one wants to hire them.

Companies and firms who used to recruit from presidential administrations and brag when they were successful in poaching an aide are making the calculation that the risks of bringing on a Trump administration official outweigh the rewards, according to interviews with 10 current and former administration officials, top recruiters, and lobbyists who did not want to be named to talk candidly. BuzzFeed News reached out to them after previously reporting during an especially chaotic stretch for the Trump White House that some officials were trying to leave but finding their job prospects to be “pretty bleak.” That’s especially pronounced for more junior staff.

The leadership at a prominent, bipartisan Washington public affairs firm went as far as to make an active decision not to hire from the Trump White House because of the “reputational risk” associated with it, a former White House official was recently told. The official asked BuzzFeed News not to disclose the name of the firm.

You do realize this was the interim president. The university president that was in place when much of this originally went down with Nassar already has been booted.

So, this seems to be systemic.

I know a university has never been shut down, I was just being facetious on that. But, we may see something drastic go down in this case.

Also, remember, MSU is in Lansing…capital city of a Republican governor that has already shown huge disregard for doing things right (see problems in places like Flint). It wouldn’t surprise me if the Governor isn’t involved in some of this.

Cohen’s problems just got a whole lot worse. We had been talking about whether the DOJ would respect attorney client privilege. They applied the crime fraud exception to get the warrant.

Well, as they dug into the paperwork, they found… Cohen’s performing “little to no legal work” and exchanged zero emails with Trump. Other communications? They’re going to be claiming attorney client privilege isn’t much of an issue. As I was saying last night, they’re giving him more deference than he’s actually entitled to.

That’s the point of free speech, that the government doesn’t limit what people can say so that the people themselves can respond to it how they see fit. IOW, when the people run screaming away from advertisers supporting speech they find offensive, and the advertisers stop supporting that speech, THAT’S HOW IT’S SUPPOSED TO WORK.

But you know as a lawyer, in a situation like this you proceed as if the privilege applies until you can show that it doesn’t. If you say from the start he’s not entitled to the deference and it turns out he is entitled to it, then you severely damage your case.

Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein tells confidantes he is prepared to be fired

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has struck a stoic and righteous tone in private conversations he has had this week about the fate of his job as President Donald Trump has launched public criticism against him and considered firing him, according to three sources who have spoken to Rosenstein.

In those conversations, he has repeated the phrase, “Here I stand,” a reference to Martin Luther’s famous quote, “Here I stand, I can do no other.” Coincidentally, former FBI Director James Comey, whom Rosenstein fired, repeated the same phrase to President George W. Bush in a conversation that has been widely reported and that Comey describes in his forthcoming book.

One source who spoke to Rosenstein said he seemed fully aware he may soon lose his job and was at peace with the possibility, confident he had done his job with integrity.

Who was wondering what Valerie Plame had to say about the Scooter pardon?

Valerie Plame, the former CIA operative at the center of the case against a former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, said Friday morning that President Donald Trump’s impending decision to pardon the aide, Lewis “Scooter” Libby, was about no one but Donald Trump.

“This is definitely not about me. It’s absolutely not about Scooter Libby. This is about Donald Trump and his future,” she said Friday appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “What he’s putting out there is the idea that you can pardon people for serious crimes against national security. I think he has an audience of three, perhaps more. That would be Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn and Jared Kushner.”

She said the “message” being sent is “you can commit perjury and I will pardon you if it protects me and I deem that you are loyal to me.”

I think she nailed it.

I’m convinced that Libby was a fall guy for people higher in the W Bush administration that ordered the illegal leak. That is what Cheney meany by ‘leaving a soldier on the battlefield’.

Even the mafia has more honor than Republicans, since their fall guys end up serving their time, while Republicans pardon theirs.

My guess is that Libby took the hit for Cheney, and spared us all a Vice-Presidential impeachment.

This is a temper tantrum public statement from the President of the United States. The most powerful man in the free world. And it reads like Jan going off on Marsha on the Brady Bunch.

Any private corporation or reputable organization would have fired Trump long ago. The GOP must be made to pay for this appalling dereliction of duty.

Good afternoon Lizards. I get on-line to see the Friday White House Shitstorm in full swing. I think I need something stronger than water to drink at this time.

On other fronts I found a new place to rent about 20 miles outside of Philadelphia. Move-in at the end of the month and I’m busy setting up the switch over of utilities and insurance for that date. Just moving from one task to another, and each completed one makes things a little less stressful.

Interesting historical footnote, the first impeachment by the House of Representatives was actually against a US Senator, William Blount. The impeachment was dismissed in the Senate because they had already expelled him, but I was under the impression it was only applicable for people who had been confirmed by the Senate.

Nothing pisses off a good lawyer so much as a bad lawyer. We all have had shitty clients, we have all had cases go sideways, we have all lost motions we felt we should have won. But nothing pisses us off more than a lawyer who tries to cheat the system. And you really want to see a judge get pissed off - file a frivolous motion, waste judicial resources, that’s the fastest way to get sanctioned.

In case anyone is interesting in a mildly entertaining controversy:

Latinos Have a Lot of Thoughts on Heinz’s Mayo-Ketchup Sauce

Heinz is bottling a sauce made by combining mayonnaise and ketchup. The product, which isn’t currently available in the United States, is called Mayochup. And though it might be new for Heinz, the sauce - also known as salsa rosada, salsa golf, MayoKetchup, and other names - goes way back. Luis Federico Leloir is credited with creating salsa golf in the 1925 at a golf club (hence the name) in Argentina, decades before he went on to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Between some suggesting better alternatives to the name MayoChup to others criticizing the color (not everyone wants equal parts of mayo and ketchup) to pointing out it’s already been bottled (Goya’s already been there, done that), people have a lot of thoughts. And it is easily the most entertaining corner of the internet RN. Check out some reactions below.

The constitutional crisis is just about here, folks.

The Sessions/Pruitt move is clearly the stupidest move he could make (on top of combining two ongoing scandals, it would mean two more confirmations (EPA and DOJ) when the State confirmation looks to be going terribly). It’s also a problem because if Sessions is fired, Trump can’t technically appoint an Acting AG, instead the position would, by law, devolve to the Deputy AG… some guy named Rod Rosenstein. So he’d create a third controversy for himself in the process.

So I fully expect that will be the way he goes.

People in the thread are saying:

……..
“Trump moved to intervene to protect his alleged AC privilege because he is currently not a party to the proceeding. The Court granted the application to intervene. It kind of sucks for him, though. The harder he fights, the closer he makes himself to an accused criminal.”

What in heaven’s name is the meaning of that last tweet? DT can make the decision?

Alright, so I looked it up. Basically, the legal term “intervention” indicates that a person who is not a party to the original litigation can join the litigation without the permission of the original litigants. Like it or not, Donald J. Trump is now a part of this case.

re: #256 KGxvi

The Sessions/Pruitt move is clearly the stupidest move he could make (on top of combining two ongoing scandals, it would mean two more confirmations (EPA and DOJ) when the State confirmation looks to be going terribly). It’s also a problem because if Sessions is fired, Trump can’t technically appoint an Acting AG, instead the position would, by law, devolve to the Deputy AG… some guy named Rod Rosenstein. So he’d create a third controversy for himself in the process.

So I fully expect that will be the way he goes.

Didn’t they somehow think they could get around the succession by putting someone in as interim director then fire Mueller. Say, a Trump stooge like a Pruitt.

I think that is what the most brilliant Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Attorney at Lawless was hinting when she said they have been advised there are legal paths to fire Mueller.

Of course it could be 89%+11% bullshit…but that is really what SHS practices best.

If there are legitimately privileged documents, Trump has every right to try and keep those protected. I’d do the same thing in that scenario.

Another angle to this is that Trump, as the attorney, can waive the privilege but the attorney (Cohen) cannot. Not sure how that would play out just yet, but something to keep in mind.

Agree, and they’ll get to look, but I understand the raid was done with two groups of FBI materials to make sure only the relevant documents were collected.

It would be interesting to watch if Trump weren’t trying to figure out a way to fire the entire justice department.

Yeah, I caught a warning map of that when I was checking our temps.

I am still amazed at how so many times now spring in Ohio goes from 40° to 80° and we don’t see a progression of temps as I remember when younger. I miss 57 - 67° days. You can really get into the warming trend and they are great temps for getting back outside, etc.

Yeah, they floated that a while back. The issue (as I understanding it) is different rules apply if someone is fired or if they resign. If it’s a resignation, Trump can move anyone in the executive that has been confirmed by the Senate to fill the position on an interim/acting basis for like 6 months. But if they are fired, the next person in line of succession becomes the acting office holder.

The question is, if Trump fires Sessions and names Pruitt as Acting AG, is there anyone with standing (besides possibly Rosenstein) who could challenge that appointment in court? Or would it be considered a political thicket question that the courts would refuse to touch?

My (albeit poorly educated) understanding is that the political appointee offices are the responsibility of Congress to oversee.

While any political appointee certainly can turn to the courts for a civil suit, the legalities of who takes the office and how they are removed is the bailiwick of Congress. Specifically the Senate, though the House can impeach and try to get the Senate to remove someone.

I’m going to give up model building and sell my collection. I just cannot find the kind of super-special flooring this hobby apparently requires. Anything you drop on a carpeted floor will vanish forever. Modelers call this phenomenon “the carpet monster.” Today I dropped an irreplaceable clear part on the carpet, saw within a few inches where it landed, and still could not find it. I went over every square centimeter with a flashlight and my fingers, nothing. This is not the first time either. A hard rubber or plastic mat is no better, since it will bounce the parts into the next dimension. Concrete is the worst. Besides providing the highest and farthest bounces, it is a chameleon material that will make literally anything that falls on it invisible. Any surface I could get would also have to be surrounded by a small fence and covered with a fine mesh net to catch bounces. If I cover the floor with flypaper type sticky material how do I get in and out of the work area? How is it physically possible for an object weighing a fraction of a gram to bounce completely out of the house, if not the county, after falling a couple of feet onto a soft surface?

Pro tip: Take the hose part of your vacuum cleaner where the attachments go and cover it with panty hose. Then gently wave it around the area you lost the part.

It’s the mini black hole phenomenon. There’s nothing to be done. Your model piece has gone into a completely different dimensional reality.

Somewhere there is a whole planet whose surface is covered to a depth of several meters with model kit parts, machine screws, electronic and car parts, small tools, and the like. A sister planet has whole continents made of loose change.

He’s kind of got Miller’s dead eyes and is kind of a creep looking. Don’t know how good his serious acting chops are though.

Y’all have heard me say this before but Mueller is the patriot Republicans think they are. Trump is who most of them actually are. Mueller even though he’s my Uncle’s age actually reminds me of the men of my grandfather’s generation. They had their strong beliefs but at the end of the day, they saw themselves as Americans. Not that Boomers, Gen Xers, Millenials, or the other generations aren’t like that but Mueller just strikes me as a throwback in the best sense of that word.

re: #350 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Could you lay a large sheet over the carpet in the area you work in? The pile of the carpet should be a soft enough underlayer to keep the falling parts from bouncing too far, and if you don’t see the item on the sheet, you can pick up the corners and the piece should end up in the middle.

It has to be a dark comedy to make it tolerable. Compare “Fail Safe” to “Doctor Strangelove”. Both good movies based on roughly the same material, but the latter was done as a dark comedy and is the better remembered movie.

From your link

Cohen - through his wholly owned entity … entered into a “Strategic Alliance Agreement” with the law firm - Cohen would receive a $500,000 annual strategic alliance fee from the firm …

Cohen would be given an office
Cohen would maintain his own computer server system
the firm did not have a key to Cohen’s office
Cohen did not have an email address with the firm
Coehen did not have access to the firm’s shared drives or document systems, nor the firm’s client files

For the duration of the agreement Cohen introduced 5 clients to the firm - he did not maintain timesheets, he did not bill any clients through the firm

So who was this law firm (not disclosed) and what did Cohen do for his $500,000 annual fee?

The only issue I have with Sachs’ analysis is that it goes back more than 7 years. At a minimum, to the Gulf War (1990–1), if not to 1952, or earlier (at which point the British claim the credit blame).

That would be justice.

You obviously don’t have good information then about Penn State to compare that to Michigan State issue. Sorry.
