[trump] WE ARE TAKING PUNITIVE MEASURES AGAINST SYRIA BY LAUNCHING MISSILES AT SITES THAT RUSSIA SAYS IT IS OK TO BOMB NOW. THIS TOTALLY SURPRISE ATTACK SHOULD MAKE THESE PEOPLE ACT RIGHT, JUST LIKE LAST TIME. [/trump]

I’d also like to add that Rep. Lee was THE ONLY PERSON IN CONGRESS in 2001 to vote against the AUMF. And everything she predicted has come true, so true that even Republicans have brought up the idea of revoking it.

It’s all a very questionable strategy.

I’m sure there are very good reasons for fighting the current Syrian government, but it strikes me as just repeating the same problem after Gulf War I.

Eventually, not being able to find a workable solution to factions is going to be the outcome of ham-fisting our way.

GWI and GWII we made Saddam “the enemy” and “evil”, but those wars ended up in chaos and continual warfare.

Speaking with Fox News personality Geraldo Rivera, Fox and Friends’ host Ainsley Earhardt proposed a military intervention in Syria could become the talk of the day should the president choose to act immediately.”

Considering that everyone saw Trump telegraphing this earlier in the week, this isn’t a surprise. Everyone knew this was happening. That also means Assad and Russia had more than enough time to move critical assets out of the way or to play dead while million dollar cruise missiles hit empty airfields and do minimal damage to runways. Oh, and “accidentally” hit obsolete Russian gear so it looks like Trump’s being tough on Russia (he isn’t).

Because the calculus to remember here is this:

Attack Assad and you help terror groups like Islamic State that operate in the chaos and rebel areas.

Attack IS and you help Assad. Those are the two options in a horrific civil war.

There are no good options when you’re dealing with a democidal dictator in Assad and a genocidal terror group is IS.

What’s your least bad option?

Benign neglect? Containment?

Allow refugees to flee the conflict?

Trump’s decided bomb ‘em all Bolton will lead the way by attacking Assad because no one ever could see the consequences of regime change or toppling dictators will leave a region more stable than before. No one in Trumpworld grasps consequences of actions being taken today. No one.

Trump could have also announced the US was taking in refugees, but that’s not his thing. He’s more interested in bombing stuff to deflect attention from the latest Friday Night News Dumps.

According to my dad, the UN Secretary General said were restarting the Cold War. If, for a moment, you suspend your suspicions about Trump and Putin coordinating, and assume it’s true, the only reason we’re back in one is because, while Putin is a strong leader with a weak country, Trump is a weak leader in a strong country. We get an actual leader back in power, and it’ll end real quick.

Archangelus  Apr 13, 2018 • 6:40:15pm

04:30 in the morning here in Jerusalem and folks are already starting to freak the F*ck out. The main concern is that Israel will be the target of retaliatory attacks by Assad’s allies, primarily Hezbollah (which has a long-standing threat in the form of a 30,000+ missile layout aimed at the country’s cities).
This is also 99.999% likely to infuriate many of tRump’s Israeli supporters, since the country’s general stance has been to avoid getting dragged into the Syrian abyss at all costs (most Israelis, including most of the Netanyahu admin and the defense establishment at large view Assad as “the devil you know” - an enemy who has been predictable and not as much as a threat compared to other players in the region - while the potential alternatives are unknown risks).
Here’s hoping the attacks are nothing more than ineffective symbolic distractions that will be wrapped up as having achieved some sort of goal after a few days without further destabilization…

The sentiment up above is right, if the reports that we hit military targets are right, then we’ve effectively just declared war on the Syrian regime itself. What once was a thinly-veiled proxy war has now just become yet another US intervention in another nation’s internal affairs that will cost us trillions and have no foreseeable end. Boots on the ground can’t be far behind.

Paul Ryan’s Most Lasting Legacy: Permanent Trillion-Dollar Deficits

He’s not going to be in office when they start to happen, but Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) most lasting legacy as speaker of the House of Representatives will be as the person who enabled permanent trillion-dollar deficits in the United States.

Ryan’s announcement today that he would not seek reelection came less than 48 hours after the Congressional Budget Office released a report that for the first time officially confirmed what private sector analysts have been saying for months: Because of last year’s big tax cut and this year’s big spending increase, even in good economic times the federal deficit will be very close to $1 trillion in 2019, will reach $1 trillion in 2020 and will exceed $1 trillion every year through at least 2028.

Israel is going to get it from all sides.

Between Bibi’s craziness against Gazans and now the war in Syria, you can be damned sure that Hizbullah will look at Israel as a target for reprisal.

And as we’ve seen previously, Hizbullah can fight guerrilla war against Israel and negate Israeli firepower in many ways.

None of this helps the Syrians caught in the middle of a civil war.

None of this helps Lebanon.

None of this helps Israel either.

It just means a wider war and even more unpredictability in an already unstable environment because Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing and is being led around by a bunch of right wing zealots whose first inclination is bomb everything.

Trump’s justification:

“The President authorized that strike pursuant to his power under Article II of the Constitution as Commander in Chief and Chief Executive to use this sort of military force overseas to defend important U.S. national interests. The U.S. military action was directed against Syrian military targets directly connected to the April 4 [2017] chemical weapons attack in Idlib and was justified and legitimate as a measure to deter and prevent Syria’s illegal and unacceptable use of chemical weapons.”

US has roughly 2700 tons of chemical weapons remaining - not counting the amounts it took out of Syria previously.

Russia had roughly 40,000 tons of chemical weapons and destroyed about around 36,7500 metric tons, which means Russia still had more to go - and more than the US.

I read that May is spectacularly unpopular right now. Could Parliament call a new election?

There has to be a vote of no confidence - that is passed - in the house of commons before there can be a forced election (Even then I think that only forces May to resign as party leader, doesn’t necessitate an election). May can be outed by her party & a new PM elected, who can but probably would not, call a new election or May herself can call an election (which she will not do - after the disaster of the last one she called early).

It is probably a matter of forcing a new election if the party in power cannot form a government. Unlikely at the minute.

Russia: there will be ‘consequences’

Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the US, has responded to the air strikes in Damascus and Homs. He says Moscows warnings have been left unheard and that Russia is being threatened. “We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences,” he says.

He says “insulting the president of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible” and that the US, as a holder of chemical weapons, has no moral right to blame other countries.

John McCain, a Trump foe and chairman of the Senate armed services committee, has applauded the president for taking military action “and for signalling his resolve to do so again if these heinous attacks continue”.

He says: “The message to Assad must be that the cost of using chemical weapons is worse than any perceived benefit, that the United States and our allies have the will and capability to continue imposing those costs, and that Iran and Russia will ultimately be unsuccessful in protecting Assad from our punitive response.”

However, he urges famously impulsive Trump to put together a comprehensive strategy for the region in order to succeed in the long run. He says air strikes alone will not achieve US objectives in the Middle East.

At one time we would have dealt with a minor-power WMD threat by sabotage and clandestine action of various kinds. It could still be done but today’s leaders want the full glare of publicity that earlier leaders sought to avoid. Reagan’s attack on Libya in 1986 may have set the trend. Libya was complicit in a terrorist attack in West Berlin. There are many ways this could have been handled, assassinated agents, sabotaged ships, even a low profile SEAL raid. Saint Ronnie though had to go with the loudest and most public, though possibly least effective, response he could. The gibbering hordes hooted and screeched their approval and ambitious Republicans took note.

How many people will be hurt or killed by Trump’s weakness of character.

What I’d suggest is that Assad probably felt emboldened to do this because of Trump’s obsequiousness toward Putin, his affection and envy for ‘strong men’, and his clear lack of interest in what happens to civilians who get in their way.

THAT has emboldened all of them.

Trump’s justification:

Article II does not authorise the Commander-in-Chief of the military to launch attacks on foreign powers.

That is an overt lie.

Therein lies the problem. I support such a strike as this. Just not from some fucking idiot like Trump and his toadies. They have a tendency to fuck up anything they touch. I’m curious how he will deal with the limitedness of this strike.

I don’t without authorisation from Congress. Conservatives have completely abdicated their Constitutional authority to declare war (which does not have to be a public declaration) in the name of grasping and maintaining power.

That is all this is about. Power as religion.
