A Brilliant Live Performance by Mark Knopfler: “Postcards From Paraguay”

Music • Views: 30,692

YouTube

A live performance from the Meistersaal, Berlin on the 10th September 2007 filmed and broadcast by German TV station, RBB.

One thing was leading to the next
I bit off more than I could chew
I had the power to sign the checks
It wasn’t difficult to do
I couldn’t stay and face the music
So many reasons why
I won’t be sending postcards
From Paraguay
I robbed a bank full of dinero
A great big mountain of dough
So it was goodbye companero
And cheerio
I couldn’t stay and face the music
So many reasons why
I won’t be sending postcards
From Paraguay
I never meant to be a cheater
But there was blood on the wall
I had to steal from peter
To pay what I owed to Paul
I couldn’t stay and face the music
So many reasons why
I won’t be sending postcards
From Paraguay

On Facebook, a poll by a bank finds that only 8% of adults under twenty-seven consider it their favourite social media platform. Snapchat and Instagram are far and away the favourites.

Facebook is for old folk.

Which is why it has so many genealogy groups.

And why right-wing and fundamentalist memes abound on it.

My two sons with accounts have basically stopped using them. My middle son, who lied about is age to get on facebook, is now using instagram for public communications.

Mark Knopfler is a great guy, and in my opinion, one of the all-time great rock guitarists. Everybody talks about Clapton, but Mark is at least as good as Clapton.

(I’d say the same thing about a few others, too—Robbie Robertson…the late (sob) Walter Becker…the great Jon Herrington from the Dan Band…I’m sure there are plenty more.)

Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Apr 14, 2018 • 7:42:15pm

Right Wing Watch, especially their Twitter account, is a great way to keep up with kookery. Only drawback is that they concentrate on really batshit religious elements without providing the context that would explain why this is important.

I also have a 2) Instagram account under another name, just so I can occasionally check on this or that celeb.

My 4) Twitter account is connected to my LGF persona.

So the only thing I’m missing out on is your 3) Discord, of which I’ve not experienced and not sure I want to try.

Yet, because so many of my older relatives are on Facebook, and so are the genealogy groups I need, to Facebook I go.

Also WhatsApp. All three are blocked in China now. WhatsApp wasn’t blocked until last year (or the year before??) when China realized it used end-to-end encryption, making surveillance nearly impossible. Apparently, Russia is blocking Telegram for the same reason, but justifying the blocking by saying “terrorists” could be using TG to communicate with each other.

It’s a mistake to think that the crazy right is about power and winning elections. That is just a dangerous by-product of their real purpose, which is to fleece gullible consumers with MLM scams, get rich quick schemes, quack medicine and a vast array of other bunk. Unfortunately their political tail is wagging the scammer dog and all sorts of power seeking parasites have latched on for the ride. That is really how we got Trump.

Donald John “On Many Sides, On Many Sides” Trump (b. 1946), a.k.a. “John Miller”,[3] “John Barron”,[4] “David Dennison”,[5] and “Mr. Brexit”,[6] Cadet Bone Spur,[7] is an American (un)intentional comedian, honorary Russian Cossack,[8] heel wrestling personality and WWE Hall of Famer,[note 1] personality-cult leader, [note 2] Nobel Prize nominee, [note 3][10][11] and potential second coming of Reagan current false-equivalency[ 12][13] President of the United States. In the summer of 2015 he commandeered the Republican Clown Car, running on the hazy slogan of “Make America Hate Great Again”. Nowadays, Trump markets himself as a Turbo-Wingnut: he’s a climate-change denier, is militantly pro-life, wants to toughen up America by building a Great Wall of Mexico,[14] eliminating the Departments of Education, Commerce, and Energy (respectively), thinks vaccines cause autism,[15] yada yada. His Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, had more sensible policies on all these issues.

Sea Mexican!  Apr 14, 2018 • 10:00:09pm

I’m reading this article from the Economist, and it’s idiotic for times. When the author sticks to the facts, it shines. The deeper he goes into analysis, the worst it gets. It’s almost as if he only looked at the facts, and didn’t even bother to know the devil in the details.

One of my biggest pet peeves is that the author assumes that the Puerto Rican government can do miracles. Unfortunately, our government is bound by the Constitution and it can’t go around making deals with foreign countries, which would help greatly in improving the economy. It’s why the IRS Section 936 were such a big deal, as they were approved by the Federal Congress.

There’s also praise for the labor reform that was approved last year. One of the things the author purposely ignores is that, while other states might have smaller baselines, the wages are much higher. Reducing benefits while keeping the same salary is basically casting people out of their lands. The net effect of the first Roselló labor reform was that many workplaces fired employees (anyone employed before the new law would keep the benefits), to open the same exact openings a couple of months later and sign the employees with reduced obligatory benefits.

Punta Santiago is not a town nor a city in Puerto Rico. It’s part of Humacao.

And that’s without taking in account the petty shots at the PR culture.

Whacking off in the middle of a XXX theater while his TV show was still in production.

Not necessarily judging, because what would people think would happen in a place like that, but definitely not a good PR look afterwards. Hence, the show was canned and Pee-Wee was put on ice for a long time, though Reubens has done some notable roles in movies and TV outside of his PW character (Blow, for one).

re: #85 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Right. So IOW, nothing.

I’m not arguing or anything, but, seeing as he was the star of the most popular live-action Saturday morning kids’ show at the time, you can see why he got canned and the show canceled.

It’s not even like he was out of work that long afterwards, either; as a matter of fact, he worked pretty steady through the 90s, it just wasn’t as Pee-Wee:

During the 1990s, Reubens kept a low profile, dedicating himself to writing and collecting a variety of things, “everything from fake food, to lamps”,[27] although he did do some dubbing and took small parts in films such as 1992’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Tim Burton’s Batman Returns (Reubens portrayed the Penguin’s father) and 1996’s Matilda and Dunston Checks In. In 1993, he voiced for a character in another one of Burton’s productions, The Nightmare Before Christmas. (Reubens would later voice Lock for the video game The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge in 2004.) During the mid-1990s, Reubens played a recurring role on the TV series Murphy Brown. The role earned him positive reviews and his first and only non-Pee-wee Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. He appeared six times on the show between 1995 and 1997. Afterward, Reubens began working on an NBC pilot entitled Meet the Muckles, a show that would be based on You Can’t Take It with You. The project got stuck in development hell, and was later dropped when Reubens’ ideas grew too elaborate and expensive, although Philip Rosenthal blamed NBC’s negative response on Reubens being on a “blacklist”.[11]

By 1999, Reubens had given several interviews as himself and made public appearances while promoting the movie Mystery Men, the first being on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1999.[62] He also starred in Dwight Yoakam’s Western South of Heaven, West of Hell, playing as a rapist and killer. In 2001, Reubens had his first extended television role since Playhouse, as the host of the short-lived ABC game show You Don’t Know Jack, based on the game of the same name. It was cancelled after six episodes due to low ratings.[63]

Reubens played a flamboyant hairdresser turned drug dealer in Ted Demme’s drama Blow, which starred Penélope Cruz and Johnny Depp. His performance was praised and he began receiving scripts for potential movie projects.[64][65]

Reubens dated actress Debi Mazar in 1993 after he started attending film premieres with her.[66] Reubens has since credited Mazar with ending his depression from his arrest.[67]

I did not know he dated Debi Mazar before she got married Gabrielle…go figure.

That just only right, though it’ll never be enough towards the two black men who were unceremoniously rousted and frogmarched out of the store in cuffs; there better be a couple of checks with a whole lot of zeroes going to those two, as well as the manager who called the cops losing their fucking job.

Saw Paul Reubens in a surprising venue a while back: the aviation history documentary Above and Beyond. This was about the foreign volunteer pilots who helped found the Israeli Air Force in 1948. Paul’s father, Milton Rubenfeld, was one of those pilots and quite a character in his own right. Both Paul and his mother appeared on camera to talk about him. Milton died in 2004.

And there always seems to be a Nashville connection somehow: Paul’s sister Abby has lived here, has practiced law, and taught law at Vanderbilt for a long time:

Abby Rubenfeld (born 1953) is an American civil rights attorney who practices in Nashville, Tennessee.[1]

Rubenfeld received an A.B. with honors from Princeton University, where she was class president, and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1979, where she helped create the Boston University Law Association.[1][2][3] She was admitted to practice law in 1979.[2][3]

She was an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University Law School and chair of the Individual Rights and Responsibilities section of the American Bar Association and of the National Law Association.[3][4][5][6] She is also an attorney, mother, and board member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee. She serves on the board of directors of the Human Rights Campaign, and was an attorney and Legal Director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc.[4]

Rubenfeld is the daughter of Milton Rubenfeld and the sister of actor Paul Reubens (born Paul Rubenfeld). She is married, has two daughters, and a stepdaughter.[3]

I’d heard her name in the news here a lot over the years, but I’d never known until fairly recently that she is his sister.

Watch the two videos, all the way to the end. Just the look on Kaylee Lorincz’ face at the end is so amazing. She knows in that moment she is a powerful woman. When I tucked the camera back into my shirt pocket I added a bunch more garlic, herbs, and other seasonings. It’s starting to smell good in the kitchen. I have dough rising for some fresh rolls to eat it on.

I don’t know if this got shared on Friday; I was in transit all day. It’s a Larry Nassar victim speaking about how Michigan State president John Engler basically tried to bribe her to go away and lied to her about talking to Rachael Denhollander. Watch the two videos, all the way to the end. Just the look on Kaylee Lorincz’ face at the end is so amazing. She knows in that moment she is a powerful woman. And she’s only 18 and been through so much!

[Embedded content]

I think we may see some great leaders come out of this Nassar debacle as well.

“We don’t care about the money - it’s not about the money” - a new generation that can’t be bought. That was a powerful speech. She is not giving up.

SOP for Republicans. Normal DARVO. Cognitive dissonance for Trump’s supporters. My Trumpster brother acknowledges he worked with the mob because “you had to if you were in real estate in NY” but he doesn’t think that indicates that Trump may be personally dishonest. And of course, Comey and Hillary are going to jail. My brother expressed concerned about the fate of democracy with one party potentially in control of everything. When we said that he’s come around because that’s the situation now, he sputtered and denied that applied to the current situation.

LA Times, 7:00 am:

Without mentioning Mueller, Trump lawyers urge high court to bolster his power to fire executive officials

The Supreme Court is set to hear a seemingly minor case later this month on the status of administrative judges at the Securities and Exchange Commission, an issue that normally might only draw the interest of those accused of stock fraud.

But the dispute turns on the president’s power to hire and fire officials throughout the government. And it comes just as the White House is saying President Trump believes he has the power to fire special counsel Robert S. Mueller III.

Trump’s Solicitor Gen. Noel Francisco intervened in the SEC case to urge the high court to clarify the president’s constitutional power to fire all “officers of the United States” who “exercise significant authority” under the law.

“The Constitution gives the president what the framers saw as the traditional means of ensuring accountability: the power to oversee executive officers through removal,” he wrote in Lucia vs. SEC. “The president is accordingly authorized under our constitutional system to remove all principal officers, as well as all ‘inferior officers’ he has appointed.”

This Brazilian pastor said he was saving souls. Police say he ran a slave-labor ring.

MINDURI, Brazil — Welcome to Paradise Farm.

In the fertile hills of southeast Brazil, scores of Christian workers tend banana and citrus fields, rousing iridescent butterflies in the noonday sun. In the evenings, laborers come home to cement dorms, communal meals and prayer sessions far from the secular distractions of urban life.

“We are all Christians who follow the New Testament,” said Paulo Henrique da Silva, president of the cooperative that manages the farm. “We came together to live as one.”

Yet this picture of faith, Brazilian authorities say, is masking a darker truth. Officials describe the ranch as part of a sprawling slave labor and racketeering ring led by Pastor Cícero Vicente de Araújo, a former salesman. Federal police are calling it another in an unusual string of high-profile criminal cases tied to evangelical churches here in Latin America’s largest nation.

The dramatic surge of evangelical Christianity in Brazil in recent decades is giving the religious right an increasingly powerful political voice. But in a country where corruption and malfeasance have already infiltrated the highest levels of politics and business, opportunists are also muscling in on houses of worship.

I’m trying to find a dataset to analyze as part of my machine learning study group I have up at work. I’m looking for something I can do some regression analysis on to use some of the tools we’re learning about. One of the suggested sites is kaggle.com. Someone has introduced Zuckerberg’s Congressional testimony as a dataset.

As Trump’s lifetime of corruption and crime comes fully into public view, remember that every tweet, every speech, every angry denunciation he’s made—accusing others of corruption and insisting on his innocence—was made in full knowledge of his own guilt.

Moreso, he telescopes his every thought and crime. When he’s accusing others of whatever, it’s been repeatedly shown that he’s doing whatever it is he’s complaining about.

I wish I could agree. But I am not very trusting of one Mark Zuckerberg. Even less trusting after some of the revelations that came out last week.

I think only the surface was scratched and he may have all kinds of tools that can mine data from all manner of connections just through his properties.

The guy is fixated on getting everything he can anyway he can. You could see it in his answers and how he tried so hard not to admit the game.

But, I would also not be surprised if he has deals with other online entities that give him even more data collection than those entities may fully understand. What is a business partnership with Facebook? We are getting hints with Cambridge Analytica.

What is going on with others?

Admitting he has data on non-users really made me think differently about Facebook. Added to what happened with the elections and they just go to my top of the who can’t be trusted list.

I’m not going to let Facebook off the hook, but relying on friends and family for information has been around longer than the internet. And, as we know from old stories of sheriffs that ran towns, to lynchings of black men who didn’t even whistle at a white woman, disinformation has been around a long time.

Before Facebook, I was having to debunk stories my wife would receive in chain emails sent by family members, mainly via Snopes. I did manage to get one cousin to at least stop sending the stories to us, though I hope she stopped sending them period.

Setting aside the data collection as a related - but not exactly the same - issue, Facebook is just a public face on the problem of blindly accepting information from people who you know. But we at some level, have to do that. I’m not going to go verify everything my dad says about cars; I don’t have time. Learning just how far you can take someone else’s word is tough to do.

Edit: Most people don’t have healthy skepticism. They either have a whole bunch or nearly none.

Trump speaks for the GOP. He is the GOP.

He is the archetypical FOX viewer. The Republican party has been controlled by FOX (and Rush before them) for a long time, and now we see how true that is. Americans voted for Trump with this uppermost in mind - that he was exactly like them. Journalists thought that meant things like ‘working-class values’ or some shit and fell all over themselves to praise Trump for having that working-class, common touch, for being a man of the people even though he literally shat on gold toilet seats.

But that’s never what was meant by him being exactly like them, and Trumpers knew it. What it meant was that he was a willfully ignorant white man who ranted at TV shows just like they did.

Trump isn’t just the GOP. He is America. FOX and cult media have turned millions - millions - of Americans into people just like Donald Trump. He is the inner thoughts of millions of Americans, unfiltered, on full display.

I heard about that. now that does go into the realm of absolutely criminal.

how was that possible?

I think it must have been as simple as cross checking a name mentioned in a post or a phone number the Facebook app came across.

When it was not found to be a Facebook customer it started an “account” to build up info on that person and to see if they came up anywhere else in the data and then who connected them, etc. and then soon they can know about that person without the person being aware.

I don’t think people are thinking clearly how fast all this can be done. And how effective it could be. And once established, where it can all go from just having a name or a number.

I bet there are people working on all of this right now both from a good side and a bad. We are going to be hearing some stunning info about how much we are all known entities.

And just think. Our government may already have a way to use Facebook’s data. Think of that.

Inch at a time right? Our data, our personal details of family, travel and work now called ‘big data” whether voluntarily given or not is for sale. Every person active online. It’s not big data. it’s our data. We really should assert, insist, legislate ownership. Want my data for hire? Let me decline, and if I agree, pay me.

He’s an asshole at the bar throwing punches at the biggest asshole. I enjoy it but he’s still an asshole that has shit to answer for.

I have s a very hard time accepting Comey’s “ethical” thing after birth both he and McCabe entered the grey frey of politics 11 days before the election.

Sheesh. I thought I’d proofread that. Apparently not.

re: #348 Unshaken Defiance

Inch at a time right? Our data, our personal details of family, travel and work now called ‘big data” whether voluntarily given or not is for sale. Every person active online. It’s not big data. it’s our data. We really should assert, insist, legislate ownership. Want my data for hire? Let me decline, and if I agree, pay me.

Yes, this is a digital analog to the bit in the phrase Amendment about the Right to Petition for the Redress of Grievances: how can you petition for redress when you are unaware of how you are being aggrieved in the first place?

re: #353 ObserverArt

We’ve been worried about government data collection as long as they have kept records.

Computers in the 60s really helped expand the capabilities.

Now just about everyone has a computer link one way or another…as simple as a name and a phone number.

Then comes Facebook and put a nice face on the book and people just give it up.

And Facebook learns and learns and finds better ways to use and get more and more.

This is only going to get more intrusive, how could it not?

And modern TVs are two-way and collect data on users, like when they leave the room…

I look at Comey’s book as him trying to put a coat of paint on his past. It was looking a little dingy. But a new coat of paint is still just covering old walls.

Me too.

I must not be white enough.

Which does not surprise me, since I grew up in a low-middle class mixed race neighborhood.

I’m kinda grey!

re: #363 JordanRules

I agree with all that.
I disagree that people getting their news from these new tools is the problem. They got the same bullshit they were predisposed to believe from websites, talk radio, blogs etc before social media. Charles saw all of it up close before Twitter and FB existed.

The new tools should be regulated for sure!

Agree. I’m getting increasingly testy about the victim blaming here, that anyone who participated at any level in FB and/or other social media has been willfully stupid/ignorant and deserving of privacy invasion and propagandist manipulation because “you shoulda knowed!” No. Just no.

These platforms have value as evidenced by the millions of people who have participated, using them to innocently connect and re-connect with others. There was no reason at all to suspect at the time the way data was being mined and weaponized. It hasn’t happened before like this, outside of advertising marketing which really isn’t threatening. Likely few people care much who knows they bought a new hammer last week or that they are now seeing targeted advertising for nails. Most people do not exist in paranoid clouds, suspicious of every new widget, nor should they in a civilized, lawful society.

Back in the 1970s there was a 60 Minutes segment that talked about the best thing that could happen to surveillance was the introduction of the Automated Clearing House (ACH) for financial transactions.

Talk about prescient….
