I first heard when I was in about the 6th grade that a single light sensitive cell could be a survival advantage, allowing like offspring to breed and survive more than those who lacked this simple mutation. This would continue, with further advantage from increasing complexity until a complete eye develops. This seemed obvious, almost too simple, to me. It is too difficult for creationists though. I wonder if this is an example of attacking the opponent’s strongest point, they choose the eye as their pet example of “irreducible complexity” specifically because its evolution is so easy to understand.

I bought a half pound once (8 oz.) before legalization, cost me $2500. I sold maybe two ounces and kept the rest for myself. That shit lasted almost three winters.

Everybody in town wasn’t getting enough sleep during the middle of that winter because in addition to work, play, and adulting, there was snow removal, and we had to make time for that. It was intense.

Windows 10 sure is annoying.
Spent an hour just setting it up to look and function (THE FREAKING START MENU!) like 7. So many options are just hidden in layers of menus and such. WHY? I’ll admit, it runs a bit faster than 7. Still on the fence about keeping it.

So, I lost an apartment tonight that I was planning to leave on 6/30.

I believe I released some bad assed demon when I cleaned out the huge closet, looked through all the old pix, the old cards etc.

What a shitshow. The neighbor came home, turned her water is off. It is still pouring/dripping down.

Tomorrow = insurance calls etc. Tonight on the couch. Kitty is scared of the dripping water, she’s hiding in the BR still.

I wish LGF (hey Charles!) could accept large photos, I’d post em. No energy to re-size them.

Cuz the damage is amazing to look at. Really!

How did you keep it fresh enough? Freezing? Orange peel? Mine tends to get dry after less time than that, though I’ve had some for a while. Right now, I’ve got at least six flavors, all in small quantities, and I’m damned if I know which is from when but some are getting a tad dry for the pipe.

This is one area where opioids have advanced greatly. No longer do you need to go to opium dens and clog up your lungs. Popping a simple pill is all it takes.

Note that I’m not damning anyone for self-medication. Everyone has their methods of choice in how to handle the pressures of life (I tend to overeat, especially sugar and chocolate.)

I take a square inch of paper towel, wet it and stick it inside the lid of my stash jar. That works for about 1/4-1/2 ounce for about 3-10 days depending on air seal and how often it’s opened and humidity, etc. Poor man’s humidor. Large quantities should be vacuum packed.

I’ve just realised something that seems pretty obvious.

The intelligence services have been monitoring Cohens electronic communications allegedly.

It came out a few days before the raid that Cohen was in the habit of recording telephone calls and possibly wearing a wire to record in person communications.

I’m guessing that in the days between Cohen’s recording predilection being revealed, and the warrant being granted and executed, there were some very……..’energetic’ phone calls from Trump and other senior Republicans encouraging Cohen to delete the tapes before the feds seize them.

If the warrant to seize the documents is ever revealed, I’m going to bet that it shows Trump ordering the destruction of the tapes, and that’s what convinced the judge to allow the feds to seize them rather than subpoena them.

Which would be a really easy thing to demonstrate ‘obstruction of justice’ for - much easier than proving that firing Comey was designed to obstruct the investigation.

I’ve had 2 major lower back surgeries back in the ‘80’s. All in all I’m one of the lucky ones that has made it thru a fairly physical career after these surgeries. I never had the stomach for opioid painkillers other than the few times spasmodic episodes would land me screaming on the floor of the Emergency Room. Pain is a constant partner for me. It’s always there in one form or another and gets no easier as I get older. Those surgeries are now 30+ yrs old now. I have bottles of Opiods here that I’ll prolly never use. High doses of ibu for the swelling and the canna helps me not dwell on it. Then I can get on with the penance of my life.

I recall reading that the officers insisted that it was their duty in such instances to intervene.

It was their duty to respond to the accusation of trespassing and investigate. That should have, at worst, resulted in being asked to move along. There was nothing in the incident implying arrest as being an appropriate response for anyone but this being America if you are non-white, especially if you are black or Native American, you will be arrested no matter what. No one will care unless you’re one of the rare ones that someone videos it happening to AND the video goes sufficiently viral.

Yes, it seems that they simply and unquestioningly followed the managers assertion that they were “creating a disturbance”, which even the most cursory questioning would have disproved.

So, I’m going through the presentations at the current annual APS April meeting (it ends Tuesday), and a presentation from Monday, on physics education, caught my eye:

Abstract: U10.00008 : Privilege and Broadening Participation in Physics

I went in naively to read the presentation (available as a PowerPoint presentation at the link, which I downloaded and extracted a few images to post here). Now, this is not a recorded section, so we don’t really know what was spoken with the slides, but I think the presentation and additional information (below) will speak for themselves.

The presenter, Lio Burko, takes on a couple of recent articles in the physics press that evidently bothers him. First up is a Physics Today paper by three women. Burko quotes them:

Then, he proposes a way to test these claims:

Seems innocent enough (it’s not, but stick with me here.)

He uses publicly available data to show:

The implication, as it must have been spoken and not in the slides, that as the percentage of women as graduates is not different than the percentage of women as undergraduates in physics, then the claimed inequities due to treatment of women must be false. I think we can conclude that, given his next slide:

Well then, that’s a slide with attitude.

So he showed those women, didn’t he!

Well, no.

Let’s go back to his first error, which is more than an error but is in fact malfeasance. In the first slide I posted above Burko superimposes two quotes from the authors of the Physics Today article. By doing so he’s making it appear as if they proposed a simple syllogism (that B followed directly from A.)

But that is not what their article says.

Here is their article:

Note that Burko’s 2nd quote of them is their tag-line/subtitle. It’s the overall topic of the article, not a conclusion directly drawn from just any single assertion.

As for the first quote that Burko lifted, about microaggressions, it is embedded in a larger paragraph from their article:

Furthermore, surveys and studies have found that female physicists, particularly graduate students, frequently encounter microaggressions—small interactions that may seem innocuous individually but present a picture of gender bias when viewed in a pattern. The stories that opened this piece are all drawn from real experiences, and all are examples of microaggressions. The professors in the stories may not have intended to be hostile, but when female physicists are subjected to such comments on a regular basis, the cumulative effect is isolating and demoralizing.

The discussion of “microaggressions” is about discerning a pattern of behavior in the entire field.

Burko has been very disingenuous.

But even more - he’s not very insightful.

Let’s go back to the slide with his data of women in physics program. What stands out to you?

Yeah, the data itself shows that women in physics only account for one fifth of the physics students, when in our society women in that age group slightly outnumber men.

In physics terms, the gender balance in physics is very much out of equilibrium with the gender balance in the general population.

So, the real question, give that time series of data, is why is the female enrollment proportion in physics not equilibrating?

Burko doesn’t go into that.

Am I being too hard on him?

Well, let’s find out. His presentation goes on to critique another article by a duo, Scherr and Robertson. That article is found in “The Physics Teacher”, from last year: Unveiling Privilege to Broaden Participation

The underrepresentation of women and people of color in physics has been attributed to a wide variety of factors ranging from society-wide conditions such as income inequality and sparse role models, to daily interpersonal interactions that disadvantage or discourage women and people of color from pursuing physics. These factors may be seen as manifestations of White and/or male privilege: social, economic, educational, or political advantages that are made available to Whites and males on the basis of their social identity. White male privilege pervades the discipline of physics as well as the classrooms in which physics is taught and learned. For example, physics is portrayed in textbooks as the product of individual great men, independent of all social or political contexts, rather than as being shaped by the culture of the European Enlightenment (among other cultures) or the conditions during specific international conflicts.

Now, that abstract covers topics somewhat more conceptual and broad ranging than the Physics Today article previously discussed (which is not really controversial, except to those who are perhaps guilty of misogyny.)

The comment about textbooks is a common one for those who are confronting the biases in textbooks in general - this is hardly restricted to physics.

But Burko offers up as a counter narrative two quotes from the recent Nobel in physics award. Here is the one from Kip Thorne:

Good for Kip in recognizing the mass of people behind the discovery of gravitational waves.

But, and this is important, the authors Burko is critiquing are discussing the long trend in textbooks, not statements from a couple of famous physicists in 2017.

As if to somehow counter the narrative that physics has been hostile to females (as if the earlier numbers about 20% are not damning enough), Burko throws up a slide of three women who worked long ago:

Adding the Sokal and Bricmont quote is irrelevant to the actual issue of women under representation in physics. That a few women in the history of science stand out is damning enough because they wouldn’t stand out if their presence wasn’t so unusual.

Burko throwing up that quote of Sokal and Bricmont (ignoring for now any discussion of the validity of their own claims, which Burko has appropriated here improperly) with a picture of three women reminds me so much of Confederate sympathizers who think because they can find in the early colonial records a few black free people who owned black slaves that it somehow makes the owning of slaves in the Confederate states not so bad.

Burko then goes on to further try and counter Scherr and Robertson’s critique, that of the use of the language of “laws” being rooted in deeply patristic religions. Burko claims that since Paley’s claims (about the “watchmaker” etc.) are fallacies, this issue raised by Scherr and Robertson is of no effect.

But at we here all know, Creationism is alive and well in America. And I claim (along with Scherr and Robertson) that the language of many scientists today is still loaded with too many borrowed ideas from creationists (see my long ramblings about cosmology as an example.)

Anyway, it appears to me that Burko has a real problem with women commenting on the society of physics, past and present.

BTW, I never heard of Burko before. He teaches at a new college Georgia that may be a fine college, but he has almost no presence on their website.

His letter to the editor of “The Physics Teacher” was published by that periodical, and Scherr responded. You can read it here: aapt.scitation.org

Burko has little presence on twitter, too.

Given that the internet is forever I decided to do a little hunting. It appears Lior Burko used to be the University of Alabama Huntsville. He studies general relativity (black holes and such.)

While at UAH, Burko appears to have been the heavy for the administration, in pushing back against students who criticized the university:

Halverstadt charged Ganiere and Parks with injurious conduct, assisting misconduct, false information, and disruption of university activity. On November 12, Professor Lior Burko, as Preliminary Action Officer, notified Ganiere and Parks of the charges. Since then they have been under investigation in this case. Parks has reported that Burko has already asked him to write a letter of apology, effectively requesting that Parks admit his supposed “misconduct.”

The charges by the University against the students were dismissed, btw.

Regarding the APS, their meeting has several sections about representation in physics and the historical problems of the practice of physics. I notice that the person running the section of the meeting in which Burko’s presentation was to appear put Burko last in the day, when many people would have already filtered out, if that is any indication of what they thought of it.

A counter argument to the disproportionately high rate of incarceration for blacks is that they commit more crimes than whites…but that argument assumes that they are treated neutrally by law enforcement…

I really think what defines individuals is their empathy or at least trying to. You guys have heard about my wingnut friend. He doesn’t empathize at all. My closest brother in age and the father of my niece does. He’s able to try to understand tribes seldom contacted by the modern world. I know I sound like a broken record but I really think attempting to understand those totally different from yourself is what separates a liberal from a conservative on a purely human, non ideological level.

Way, way back when I was in school, the physics department was almost all male. Only one female on the faculty that I can remember, and only a few female physics majors (none in my year.) And it’s a big school with a significant physics department.

Looking back I realize how absolutely skewed my environment was, compared to the rest of the world.

He’s doing pretty good. He doesn’t get along too well with school so at my suggestion they’re putting together a multi-disciplinary curriculum for him in Robotics using Lego Mindstorms.

Meanwhile I did 32 hours at the store this weekend (most yet) but then got told I can’t have any more hours this week and so now I don’t work again till a week from today. I can’t live on what I make up here (I still haven’t paid this months rent and don’t even think about paying for meds…) but I can’t stand the thought of moving further away from my son.

In the 1960’s, one of my best friends, a woman who wanted to be an engineer, went to Purdue. Her classes were almost all male and very hostile. The assumption at that time among her classmates (and maybe the faculty) was that any woman who wanted to be an engineer was a lesbian. (This was a time, of course, where such an assumption made life very difficult for a student) She ended up transferring to University of Illinois and getting a degree in computer science.

Anyway, Klys and Decatur Deb have both apparently stopped posting.

BeachDem contacted DD in an email a week or so ago and said she heard back. He and his wife are busy. No mention at all about LGF.

Klys seemed to grow a bit tired of some of the comments that seemed too negative. So she felt like it was no point in taking it on and said she wasn’t going to be around as much. That has turned into not at all.

It happens. But it is kind of sad because people get used to others and it is a bit like a electronic friends and family thing.

But then friends and family grow tired of each other and drift apart too.

Sigh. All I can say is I miss them too.

Not sure about cameras sold in China or Japan, but my Chinese-made cellphone has a silent shutter option for its camera.

A long time ago, when there was still an East Germany, I bough a cheap b/w portable to watch the news. I noticed that it did not say anywhere on the box or packaging where it was made.
But I noticed two things: you could not turn the sound all the was down, even through a closed door, you could hear the trumpet fanfare introducing the “Tagesschau” news program. And it also had no headphone jacks.
Turns out it was an East German model and those were design features so that neighbors could check up on who was trying to watch the Western news programs.

Currently uninstalling Adobe CC programs to get ready to install on a new Windows 10 PC. Taking forever. Ugh. This appears it is going to be a day long task getting the old & unit cleaned off and the new 10 installed.

But I do love the time messages. It started out at 2% uninstalled telling me it would be 128 minutes, then 408 minutes at 4% uninstalled. Now it is say 10 more minutes at 50%. So far I have been at it for 15.

Maybe it isn’t going to be too bad.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday invalidated a provision of federal law that requires the mandatory deportation of immigrants who have been convicted of some crimes, holding that the law is unconstitutionally vague.

The case, Sessions v. Dimaya, had been closely watched to see if the justices would reveal how they will consider the Trump administration’s overall push to both limit immigration and increase deportations.

As expected after the oral argument, Justice Neil Gorsuch joined with the more liberal justices for the first time since joining the court to produce a 5-4 majority invalidating the federal statute. In doing so, Gorsuch was continuing the jurisprudence of Justice Antonin Scalia, who also sided with liberals when it came to the vagueness of statutes used to convict criminal defendants.

Only eight justices heard the case last term after Scalia’s death, and in late June, the court announced it would re-hear arguments this term, presumably so that Gorsuch could break some kind of a tie.

I always have hoped that no matter the politics of an individual prior to being appointed on the Supreme Court, once in the seat the enormity of the job and a read through the US Constitution as an actual Justice clears the mind and makes you just a Justice…not a Democrat, not a Republican, not a member of any party.

I can respect that if he’s self consistent. Scalia was not, and he allowed his prejudices to shape his thinking (I think mostly about his leanings towards creationism, and gay marriage to some extent—-there’s just facts about biology that have to take priority over personal beliefs).

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area after a day where we got nearly 3 inches of rain in a couple of hours and saw flash floods all day long (phones were going off all morning long with flash flood warnings in waves).

But it’s not the rain that has me writing this morning. It’s the Stormy weather in Trumpworld. Hannity is in deep trouble, and he still doesn’t quite get it. Fox is in trouble here too, but they might know it. It starts with ethics in journalism.

Fox has ethics?

No. Just no.

Stop right there.

Hannity has the ethics of a limp noodle that can be twisted and turned however he sees fit. He’s got a certain moral flexibility that allows him to continually lie and misrepresent facts and the state of the world to perpetually keep his viewers/listeners misinformed for years on end.

Hannity is an amoral agitprop merchant. It’s what he does and it’s who he is.

And Fox News lacks any morals or ethics either. After all, they’re the same outfit that paid off women for sex harassment claims and then gave the harassers golden parachutes to get out.

Oh, and did I mention that the golden parachutes were more money than the settlements?

Fox should have canned Hannity after the Seth Rich debacle, except they didn’t. They stood by him even after the family of Rich demanded that he stop spreading nonsensical conspiracy theories about their son’s death - which Hannity tied to Clinton.

The family is suing Fox; and frankly they have a damned good case.

The fact that Hannity has had Cohen on and never disclosed that Cohen was his lawyer is a huge no-no. Heck, there’s a reason that when media outlets like ABC do reporting on movies, they have to add the disclaimer that Disney is the parent company to ABC. It’s to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

Hannity doesn’t give a crap about any of that. He’s more interested in dumping on Clinton and deflecting attention from Trumpworld. That he’s now watching it all crumble down around him is… not quite justice, but it is the start of schadenfreude.

According to the cnn article, this Gorsuch decision is in line with Scalia’s jurisprudence on these types of cases. I haven’t read enough of the case law to know how accurate that is

Michael Catanzaro, who has headed domestic energy and environment issues at the White House’s National Economic Council (NEC), plans to leave next week and return to CGCN Group, the law and lobbying firm where he previously worked.

Based on the article, not the opinion, which I haven’t read, the terms “crimes of violence” is unconstitutionally vague, so it can’t be included in the definition of “aggravated felony” for which people can be automatically deported.

Yikes! Boeing 737, engine is a CFM-56. Looks like the fan disintegrated. There is a hell of a lot of kinetic energy in that. Repairs will be many millions (engine alone costs $8 million) if the plane is not scrapped completely.

klys was one of many of us who fought the “Oh, no, we’re doomed forever” narrative that hit hard here. I think she just decided that it was better getting away from it. I can completely understand. If I had any kind of social life at all, I probably would have done the same thing.

That’s actually the plotline from the debut episode of Pedler/Davis’ BBC drama “Doomwatch”, which was a sort of early 70s equivalent to “Black Mirror”, except concerned with ecological issues.

There is a story that a recent reboot was planned, and it was found that every single proposed plotline for the planned reboot had already been covered in the original series’s three year run.

and great for your mom! if you have no mechanical issues, running has no age limits.

my running hero is Walt Stack. He took up running at 60 and went on to scads of marathons well before it was popular. he used to run 17 miles a day (i dont recommend it)
