Geraldo Rivera claims credit on Twitter for “his role” in Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize.

wonkette.com (with video from FOX News Channel)

WTF? That is what you may be asking right now! How on earth did Geraldo inspire Kendrick Lamar’s extraordinary creativity in a small, indirect way, which led to Lamar winning the Pulitzer Prize in music for his record DAMN.? What did Geraldo do that in a still, small way helped Kendrick Lamar be not only the first hip-hop artist, but also the first non-classical or jazz artist, to win a Pulitzer in music?

OH THAT’S RIGHT, GERALDO SAID SOME RACIST SHIT ON FOX NEWS. Is that very surprising to you? Is it shocking that the world’s best selfie-taker who thinks guns didn’t kill Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin’s hoodie killed Trayvon Martin (and maybe a LITTLE BIT of George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin, but ALSO HOODIES) said some really racist shit on Fox News about Kendrick Lamar, and about hip-hop in general, samples of which ended up on Lamar’s groundbreaking, Pulitzer Fucking Prize-winning record DAMN.?

Let’s get into our time machine and travel to Geraldo’s remarks on Fox about Lamar’s incredible performance of “Alright” at the 2015 BET Awards. We will transcribe, because we want you to know exactly what Geraldo’s important contribution to Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer was:

School districts are largely funded by property taxes in Colorado, has been that way for a long time. There are very good schools in wealthy places and bad schools with high turnover in poor areas. It’s been a sad fact of life in Colorado for decades. My pops got lucky and taught for the last 31 years in a nice neighborhood near some world class skiing.

re: #4 Anymouse 🌹

When looking at these teacher movements currently going on, for better pay and better schools, the word that pops into my mind is “inflation”.

Now, from Reagan onward the “conservatives” in this country have tried to undermine public education, including not raising spending commensurate with increased demands (population growth) and the cost of things (labor, goods).

That latter is about inflation, and it seems to me that after several years of low to moderate inflation we may be on the verge of larger inflation.

If so, then those of us retired will have an increasingly difficult time.

One of the most damning things about the recent tax law changes is that by reducing taxes on the rich these same people will benefit from increased returns on their income determined by interest rates.

This is the old problem of the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer. One way the rich get richer is that they can charge (to the poorer) a higher cost for the temporary use (i.e., to “borrow”) of the rich people’s wealth (assets.)

re: #7 freetoken

It would also appear part of the problem is the usual conservative rodent copulation of public pensions in Colorado.

denverpost.com

Scott Silva, an Englewood High School English teacher, said he and his colleagues had support from the administration because the district is struggling to keep up financially. He recently used a social media fundraising site to buy new books for his literature classes.

Colorado is too wealthy of a state to have underfunded schools, he said. He rattled off statistics from the National Education Association that show Colorado was near the bottom in per-pupil-funding, spending about $2,700 less per student than the national average.

Colorado teachers also are paid less than the national average; the average salary of $46,155 in 2016 ranks 46th among states and Washington D.C., according to the National Education Association.

“It shouldn’t be this way in a state like Colorado where there’s a budget surplus,” Silva said. “Let’s start taking care of the kids a little bit.”

The teachers lined out the door Monday afternoon to attend a House Finance Committee hearing on Senate Bill 200, which would cut public employee retirement benefits to shore up PERA, the state retirement plan.

Wow, teachers in my little red state to the north of Colorado get paid considerably more.

teachingdegree.org

There are unusual perks for certain rural areas that have one-room schools … such as an attached house provided by the school district for the teacher to live in such a rural place. (Cherry County has several such schools, and is constantly looking for teachers for them. They require experienced teachers as they would be very isolated from Valentine, the only town.)

My brother-in-law in Texas is considering moving here to teach in such an environment … he thinks it would be more challenging, pay better, and be less stressful.

Why do people still think it’s okay to use the term “Jap” to describe anything pertaining to Japan or its culture?

I see this STILL used A LOT in the automotive community and it really pisses me the fuck off because it’s obviously not 1942 anymore.

If some British tells me that the word “Jap” is short for Japanese the same way that Brit is, I’m gonna explode in anger. They need to know that the term “Jap” has a loaded history the same way “Paki” does in their own country.

Snowflake files lawsuit against Worldcon for being banned by them

file770.com

Jon Del Arroz filed suit on April 16 against the 2018 Worldcon and other defendants in San Joaquin Superior Court asking damages for claimed violations of his civil rights under California’s Unruh act, and for defamation.

The first 23 paragraphs of the Complaint lay out the history of Del Arroz’ banning by Worldcon 76 from his point of view, and allegations that he was banned because he is a Republican and Trump supporter.

Several of the causes of action quote from Worldcon 76’s announcement banning Del Arroz from the con, which said in part:

We have taken this step because he has made it clear that he fully intends to break our code of conduct. Worldcon 76 strives to be an inclusive place in fandom, as difficult as that can be, and racist and bullying behavior is not acceptable at our Worldcon. This expulsion is one step toward eliminating such behavior and was not taken lightly….

Speaking of schools and funding:

In Louisiana, there’s a way for the wealthy to avoid paying state income taxes.

[…]

Today, the rebate program no longer exists; instead of rebates, Louisiana now offers tax credits. And while that change represented an improvement, it’s still terrible public policy, education experts and good government groups argue. Now, a wealthy taxpayer can effectively avoid spending any money on state income tax if they decide to contribute enough to the renamed Tuition Credit Donation program.

In fact, according to recent reports by both The New York Times and the AASA, the country’s largest association of school superintendents, it’s possible to actually make money off of the program. “In Some States, Donating to Private Schools Can Earn You A Profit,” the Times asserted in its headline.

[…]

“Louisiana is the lone exception (in the nation) where credits can exceed tax liability,” according to the AASA. There’s very little evidence the state is receiving even a modest return on the investment.

The state first began handing out rebates in 2014, and at the time, there was only one Student Tuition Organization (or STO) that qualified to administer the program, a private, Georgia-based company named Arete Scholars. Their agent in Louisiana was Gene Mills, the head of the Louisiana Family Forum, a religious right organization known for its intense opposition to gay rights and abortion and its support for creationism in the classroom, among other things.

[…]

To many, Louisiana’s program is nothing more than a transparent attempt to publicly fund religion while privatizing the school system. The participating schools are almost exclusively parochial, and many of the program’s fiercest supporters are well-known activists from the religious right.

Bon-Ton Stores likely to close all of its stores after bidding draws only liquidation firms, Reuters says (Scottsbluff, NE Star-Herald), more:

Stores owned by Bon-Ton Stores Inc., including the Herberger’s store in Scottsbluff, looks set to close.

The parent company of the Herberger’s department store chain failed to secure any bidders for its fleet of stores across the U.S. that would want to continue to operate them. It issued a press release Tuesday.

Bon-Ton Stores Inc., Herberger’s parent, likely will liquidate and close all of its stores, including the ones in Nebraska and Iowa, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by the Reuters news service.

Bon-Ton’s sales have been declining for years, and after declaring bankruptcy earlier this year, the company struggled to find a buyer that would keep the stores open, said Ken Perkins, president of Boston-based research firm Retail Metrics.

While malls across the nation are declining, Monument Mall store rentals in Scottsbluff are full, and the mall recently underwent renovation. The Herberger’s store in the mall is one of its anchor stores.

In odd news:

The Royal Canadian Mint has a bone to pick with its Australian counterpart - a possum bone that is.

The Canadian corporation is suing the Royal Australian Mint over a coin that celebrates the popular Possum Magic children’s book series.

Their issue is not with the furry marsupial but with Australia’s method for printing colour on to coins, for which Canada claims to own the patent.

But Australia claims it uses different methods, court documents show.

Canada first sued the Royal Australian Mint in an Australian Federal Court last December over an Australian Remembrance Day commemorative coin.

The AU$2 ($1.50, £1) coin bears a vermillion poppy at its centre, and Canada claims it infringes on its patent for the method of manufacturing coloured metallic coins.

In March, the Canadian mint filed additional court documents claiming there were five other infringing coins, including two more Remembrance Day coins and the Possum Magic coin, which was released through the Woolworths chain of supermarkets in 2017.

Also, a CAN$1,000,000 gold coin has been stolen from a museum in Berlin. The coin weighs 100 kg and is 50 centimeters in diameter.

When we elect people to “run government like a business” they look on things like health care, education, public safety, environment, etc., as cost factors to be cut instead of as investments in a healthy, prosperous and well-educated society.

Turning Point USA posted this image of Nelson Mandela on Facebook with the hashtag “#BigGovSucks” and this might be even dumber than the diaper thing

They just look on it differently, namely, all they see is “Poverty…can be removed by the action of human beings” and interpret that as that “people are poor because they are lazy”

Just like folks who think “Born in the USA” is a patriotic, pro-America song.

I’m going to kvetch about my day, so skip if you don’t want to read about petty teacher kvetching about colleagues.

This week, we are giving the freshman classes their midterm exams, and part of those exams involve listening exercises. Another teacher found some ESL recordings online and downloaded what she thought were the files. Trouble is, they would only play on the office computers and not on the classroom computers. Nobody knows why, even the self-described IT maven who heads our team. He said he even tried changing the filetype to mp3, but they still would not play on the classroom computers. Everybody is puzzled.

I had to give my exam this morning, so yesterday I asked if we had managed to solve the audio file problem, because I really did not relish reading three tapescripts three times each for four different sections of freshman English. Nope, IT maven says. The teacher who downloaded them is using a Mac and anyway she’s trying to resolve the issue. Since he says he has working copies, I save them to my USB stick. Instead of being around 500KB to 1MB in size, they are only 100 Bytes each. So, I figured they are corrupted somehow.

I leave the office, come home, and try them out on my laptop. They work! But only on my laptop and not on the used desktop I have. VLC plays them. Desktop Windows Media Player doesn’t. Big puzzle. So I ask the teacher who originally downloaded them where she found them. She tells me. And what she had downloaded were not the actual files, but Windows Media Player shortcuts (.wax files). So, naturally our classroom computers can’t play them because (1) they run older versions of WMP and (2) they are not connected to the ‘Net.

I was momentarily stumped. Then I used Notepad++ to open one of the .wax files, assuming it would contain the link to the actual file. It did. i downloaded it. And the other two. There was much joy and celebration. So, I shared them with the other teachers. They are all .wma files, which any Windows computer can play.

Today at lunch, Self-Described IT Guy swears to me the files I downloaded and shared did not work for him. I noted that they worked for me and at least one other teacher. He still asserted they did not work for him. I dropped the matter, thinking, “Dude, you’re supposed to be the IT expert and our leader. WTF?”

Meanwhile, the teacher who originally downloaded the files thanked me profusely.

Not quite as dramatic as neighbors who are meth dealers, but this is China, yo.

And we need to, because, if we don’t, that military we’re spending so much money on won’t have soldiers capable of operating it.

One Tomahawk cruise missile costs $1.8 million. I did the math, at an average salary of $55K per year, that would hire around 30 teachers for a year.

We launched around 90 cruise missiles at Syria last week.

It never ceases to amaze me that in the race to slash the fuck out of budgets, education is so severely targeted.

Surely there must be plenty of wasteful spending we could curb before screwing kids out of decent textbooks?

The thing is that education is one of the biggest expenditures states have. If you are going to cut, you almost have to cut education.

That said, wasn’t Pence in just in Peru, not Korea? Maybe it’s an older photo, but it doesn’t look quite as… entrenched as DMZ facilities ususally are. So you might like to use the binos exactly where they are.

I’m in a conservative area of CO (though it is changing rapidly). We all wore red yesterday to show support. The issue is so few teachers (in this area) are part of the union because teachers get paid so little that the $80 a month is too much for some to join. The legal MJ money doesn’t seem to be reaching schools outside Denver and the only part of the education system that is required at the state level to be funded is K-12. Keep in mind the CO economy is booming but because of TABOR (Tax Payer Bill of Rights - aka the worst idea ever) the extra money cannot be used for anything needed unless it was mentioned when the tax revenue was passed. Thus the Rs are trying to destroy the pension (PERA) which is well funded and not tied to the stock market (they are trying to privatize and raid it).

The US military budget is massive, but no nation uses their military and places the requirements on it that the US does. There’s also massive sacred ratholes we keep tossing cash into, so that cuts ultimately come from other areas which impacts our readiness. There is simultaneously too much money spent on our military and too little, exemplified by the fact we’ve dropped over a trillion and counting into the F-35 program and 100s of billions into the Zumwalt, while at the same time we have ships running into things every other week. We have 10(19) aircraft carriers, but can’t keep our predators from being jammed by the Russians and our cruise missiles from being shot down by 1960s technology. Also, blowing $150 million on cruise missiles is a poor expenditure of money.

For all of the bleating about Obama being a Constitution-shredding monster, McConnell has pretty much become one. Starting with spiking Garland’s nomination. This fucker did it pretty much as a desperation move, hoping that Trump would get in and the GOP could run rampant, consolidating power and titling the playing field.

It’s an ongoing power grab with these assholes. Every fucking day. This is why I got pissy over those two sidebar Pages from a few weeks ago, particularly the one where I was supposed to glean insight from Jonah Goldberg on how to beat Trump.

Every goddamn Republican/conservative is onboard with the power grab, or too chickenshit to stand up and say “Enough”. Add in the nitwit “independents” who have their assess up the Magic Balance Fairy’s ass? We’ve got a long road ahead to fix this, assuming we can.

I guess I should take some solace from Gorsuch screwing Trump the other day, but that’s probably a one-off.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Fox and Trump continue their projection like IMAX wherever possible to deflect attention from Trump’s criminal wrongdoing on to others, especially Clinton.

This encapsulates the Fox position right now:

Meanwhile, Trump may have blundered into a breakthrough on North Korea, but he’s still delusional if he thinks that North Korea is going to give up their nuclear program.

North Korea wont give up the very thing that got Trump and the US to treat North Korea as an equal and got the US to come to the bargaining table with them.

That’s right. Trump fell for the North Korean position and now treats them as an equal, even though North Korea’s entire plan has been extortion all along. Get the US to make concessions, and North Korea hasn’t given up anything.

Why would North Korea give up the very thing that is getting Trump and the US to bend over backwards to say peace is on the way.

Moreover, Trump doesn’t even realize that he’s handed Jong Un a lifetime power pass - because Jong Un got what his father, grandfather, and great grandfather couldn’t - the US to the bargaining table directly instead of via 6 party talks or via intermediaries.

It’s not a good look for Trump to get played, but Trump doesn’t even realize it yet. He still thinks North Korea is going to make peace with the South and give up their nuclear program.

The government already spends more on health care than the military. The problem isn’t spending it is a complete lack of willingness to address costs. Between medicare, medicaid and VA the US government already spends more per capita than Canada does for healthcare. That is more per person, not more per person covered. Never mind the additional money spent by individuals.

Trump is not getting played; he really doesn’t care. His servile press and Trumpster base will support him no matter what he does in Korea. He is a fan of dictators world over and will treat any agreement, no matter how much it is to our detriment, as proof of his success as a negotiator.

If he accepts a deal on Kim Jong Un’s terms, the US will withdraw its troops from Korea, withdraw the US nuclear umbrella from South Korea and Japan, and then in a decade or two the North may feel secure enough to give up its nuclear weapons. That’s North Korea’s concept of “denuclearization.”

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — An island-wide blackout has hit Puerto Rico, which is struggling with an increasingly unstable power grid nearly seven months after Hurricane Maria hit the U.S. territory.

Electric Power Authority spokeswoman Yohari Molina tells The Associated Press that crews are investigating the cause. Officials said Wednesday it could take 24 to 36 hours to fully restore power.

It’s the first time since Category 4 storm hit on Sept. 20 that Puerto Rico has experienced a full island-wide blackout.

Some 40,000 power customers were still without normal electricity service as a result of the hurricane.

This is from his own statement:

Cuomo made the announcement at the annual convention of Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network. He decried the state’s current law blocking those who have been released from prison but are still on parole from voting, saying it didn’t square with the goals of parole and reentry.

“At the same time, we’re saying we want you a part of society, we want you to get back into the community,” he said.

Cuomo had proposed legislation to grant voting rights to parolees, but it was shot down by the State Senate — leading Cuomo to argue the state needs a new Legislature. But he said he wouldn’t wait that long.

“I’m unwilling to take no for an answer,” he said. “I’m going to make it law by executive order and I announce that here today.”

I was in Arizona one christmas break as a kid. …it rained and snowed. Still, that would be a fun road trip, and I could probably deal with desert camping.

Most of the Lake Michigan shoreline I’m familiar with is too close to cities (particularly the dunes - Gary to the left, Michigan City to the right, and Chicago skyline just barely peeking over the west horizon) but it’s a long coast and I should see what there is further north.

The fear/assumption that something like this could happen, the idea that the US would abandon them and obstruct their efforts to do their own economic development (we told them at the time it was paranoia) … is exactly why FALN had so much support (including violent, terrorist support) in the 1940’s-19780’s.

Before there was PLO, before there was ETA, before there was Red Hand… FALN was doing bombings and hijackings in the continental US, there was that time they shot up Congress, the time they tried to assassinate President Truman and one of his bodyguards died shielding him from the bullets.

On a music-related noted, one thing I learned not long ago is that no one really knows for sure who wrote “House of the Rising Sun”; it’s a traditional folk ballad, and like so many songs like that, the authorship is lost to history. The version by The Animals is certainly the most well-known version, but it’s a cover/arrangement, not an original song.

I have an Artist’s choice CD from the Stones. that includes his 32-20 Blues and I just fell in love with it. It sounds so raw and real. Plus one of my favorite songs on Let It Bleed is Love in Vain which I didn’t know was a cover. I think lots of music comes from appropriation. I don’t see it as a bad thing really. I mean definitely give credit where credit is due which is what guys like Clapton, Keith, and others did to the old time Blues guy but don’t deny it either.

The Jones Act is deliberate, overt sabotage. Special tax rules and diluted safety standards for pharma companies if they do their R&D and clinical testing in PR, is deliberate. Not letting them vote in federal elections is deliberate.

(DC isn’t a state either, they still don’t have home rule, they have no senators or members of congress, but they sure as hell get to vote for President and they have electoral votes — they got that from the 23rd Amendment in 1961)

The hostility towards the Romani seems to be an uniting spot among the Eastern European peoples I’ve noticed sigh. Honestly, what I enjoy more about music compared to sports is that there’s not as much hostility involved if you have a different preference. I mean definitely give credit where credit is due which is what guys like Clapton, Keith, and others did to the old time Blues guy but don’t deny it either.

i am embarassed that i never read the album covers or liner notes when i was a kid
i “assumed” all music was original to the band/performers
what an eye opener

I hope no Lizards are planning to come to Prague sometime in the next few months, because Prague is pretty much closed.

Long story short, Prague needed to do a shit ton of desperately-needed infrastructure repairs……so they decided to do them all at once.

Chaos has ensued.

Here’s a photogallery.

Will this still be the case in August? Some of my cousins are planning to go to Prague after we visit Slovakia.

The hostility towards the Romani seems to be an uniting spot among the Eastern European peoples I’ve noticed sigh. Honestly, what I enjoy more about music compared to sports is that there’s not as much hostility involved if you have a different preference. Like yeah there’s some bands I don’t like but I realize that”s subjective. My dad, myself, and my brother were talking the other night about how we can appreciate Prog Rock but also the raw energy of Punk too.

A British folkie was telling me that Bluegrass has been co-opted by Northern Irish Folk bands because they do not want to be associated with Irish folk music because it is to nationalist and Republican.

So they go as far as to claim that Bluegrass music was invented in Northern Ireland (its Scotch-Irish heritage is undeniable, but the claim is ridiculous) but now I guess that Bluegrass bands are a common fixture at Ulstermen rallies and the like.

What a fucked up place and a fucked up thing to do with music that is, like almost all American music, a racial and cultural hybrid.

I do wonder if there was some friction when my great grandparents married. My great grandfather who I get my last name from was from a Lutheran German family but his bride was from a Catholic family. She was orphaned by then but he wasn’t. From what a cousin who knew them both told me, my great grandfather was an open minded man who had no problem raising his children including my grandfather Catholic. Must have worked because I was shocked finding out my Lutheran roots. And then my German grandfather, same one mentioned here ended up marrying an Irish Catholic girl from a more tougher part of town. Wonder if there was some conflict too since Mom’s Mom was Eastern Rite Catholic and her Dad, RCC. There was apparently but from what my grandfather told me, his father in law didn’t like that he drank too much. So there’s me, product of Germans, Irish, Slovak Rusyns, and Slovenes, why on earth would I be a supremacist to anyone whether it’s race, religion, or class.

I know that’s not a big deal to us now but this was in the early 50’s when there was still some friction between Catholics and Protestants on that sort of thing. The grid was in poor shape before the hurricane.

It’s even worse now, and on the very day Mulvaney testifies about how more people have power than before the storm, there was yet another major blackout on the island.

More than that, Mulvaney ignores that a significant number of Puerto Rico residents have moved to the mainland because the island’s infrastructure is FUBAR. This administration has screwed millions of Americans because of their depraved indifference to the plight of the island and ignored the need for immediate assistance to get the infrastructure functioning and rebuilt.

Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips called Elvis in for a live interview when Phillips first played “That’s Alright” on the radio. Phillips asked Elvis what high school he attended because it was the most convincing way to convince the audience that Elvis was actually a white guy. Schools (hell, everything) in Memphis were segregated back then. Dewey’s radio show was an early attempt to ‘mix the races’.

I think it’s actually pretty cool how a lot of the Brit invasion bands grew up listening to American blues and then reinterpreted it. It’s because of the Stones that I got into Robert Johnson. Everyone knows the Stones but not everyone knows Johnson.

I got into Robert Johnson because my ex was far more into hardcore blues than I ever was and she had a copy of the Complete Recordings with that photo of him on the cover. I gave a listen and became far more interested in real blues than I ever had before. Still can’t play em worth a damn though.

I like how they totally ignore how the deep South went from being Democratic to Republican as if all those former lifelong Democrats just disappeared. And I’ll point out another thing most of the Jim Crow Democrats were staunch conservatives not just on race but on other issues too. Look up the Conservative Coalition. A lot of Jim Crow Dems were Dems but not in line with their Presidents. And I’m sorry but you don’t get to cry but but Robert Byrd when Jesse Helms was a racist pig until the day he died. The Wrecking Crew, as it turned out played on nearly all my favorite albums as a kid, from the Association to the Beach Boys to Herb Alpert, Sonny and Cher, Mamas and the Papas, Fifth Dimension, Glen Campbell (who was a member)

basically the soundtrack of my childhood was comprised of their backing tracks to various singers.

Carol Kaye tells a story in which she played the session for ‘Good Vibrations’ at one studio in the morning, broke for lunch, then went to another studio to record ‘Strangers In The Night.’

I believe Glen Campbell did both of those sessions, too. That’s a hell of a way to make a living.

And it’s why in an earlier time, so many of those same types were terrified - and I mean genuinely scared - of jazz.

And of course, today hip-hop makes them apoplectic.

Absolutely. Honestly the history of music just like the history of any pop culture is forward thinking people pushing forward and conservative minded people afraid of any change. Doesn’t amtter if that’s music, visual art, or whatever medium.

They did eventually get to perform, and they made the movie Head.

I saw The Monkees in concert when I was in 8th grade. I can’t say I heard them. All I heard was screaming.

I saw them at an auditorium where rows of seats were brought in for the main floor. All of the kids were standing on their seats, and then they started standing on the backs of the seats to get up higher. When I attempted to stand up on the back of my seat, it caused the whole row of seats to tip over backwards. I remember about 10 seconds of chaos as we got our row of seats back upright so that we could stand on them and jump up and down again. I have no memory of how the band sounded.

What is it with Trump Cabinet and expensive furniture? His trade rep Robert Lighthizer spent over $900,000 on office furniture. And like his boss, Lighthizer can’t accept responsibility for anything - he’s blaming the furniture deal on Obama

In private industry, one of the big perks is that you can spend shitloads on office furniture and write it off as a business expense. That is not possible in government, but it does not seem to deter these fellows.

There are no accidents with guns. There are either purposeful shootings or negligent ones.

The negligence here is entirely on the father who failed to properly secure the gun all while knowing there was a child in the house.

and should be charged with criminal negligence and second-degree assault.

I would have to say almost no accidents. I have seen broken firearms that have casued true accidents. But as you say, that isn’t the case here and the father needs to face criminal negligence charges and every time a child dies because a parent leaves a gun unsecured, there needs to be negligent homicide charges filed and none of this “oh they’re suffering enough” bullcrap.

The other half of the soundtrack was the Funk Brothers, most notably James Jamerson. According to Robert Christgau, Greil Marcus once described The Motown Story as “the history of James Jamerson’s bass playing, on fifty-eight hits.” Per wikipedia, Jamerson played the bass for Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” lying flat on his back because he was too drunk to stand. I wonder if Carol Kaye ever tried that — I bet she could have!

Heh, there is a neighborhood in DC called Takoma Park. Supposedly to bring to mind the high mountains of Washington State… Well, Takoma Park does sit on a hillside.

re: #276 HappyWarrior

I only got out of CCD. It was just a boring way to spend my Monday night. I joke to my younger brothers that as oldest brother, I endured that month so they didn’t have to.

You got off easy!

Try a full 12 years of Catholic school if you want the full treatment.

But as I have always said in my posts, I got one hell of a college prep liberal arts education.

And a huge lesson from the nuns about passion and never saying you can’t do something.

The religious aspects did not stick though. I never got the whole Bible thing other than I saw it as a book written by men. And as I learned more about the world, that book by men grew into one of the first books on politics and control.

Hmmm. I don’t think that was the intention, but that is what I really learned.

Hey, my family’s Pittsburgh history goes back to at least 1820. In fact my generation were the first Smiths not born on the South Side.

What surprised me was how they spoke such a different dialect. (Called ‘yinzer’ these days.)

Rubberbands are ‘gumbands’. A jerk is a ‘jagoff’. A thornbush is a ‘jaggerbush’. And then, of course, there is chipped ham.

By the way, proper Yinzer pronunciation for Pittsburgh is “Pitz-burk”. Aka “Ahrn Siddy”

I didn’t know jagoff was Pittsburghness. No wonder why I use it sometimes! All four my grandparents were from Western Pa. I think only my moms dad had the accent noticeable tho. More subtle with my moms mom and dad’s Mom moved around due to Dads Dad whom I never knew’s work.

I’ve been thinking about how lovely it was for Mrs. Bush and her family to be able to choose to cease life-enabling treatment, the very best available, so she could pass comfortably in her home surrounded by her loving family. Such a gift of sweet memories and a peaceful end.

Then I think about another family in Florida who wanted such a peaceful, dignified end for their loved one and the governor at the time of that state who denied them this gift. The same brother who helped his own brother become POTUS to deny this gift to hundreds of thousands of Iraquis and thousands of American military families whose pain didn’t rate bothering Mrs. Bush’s “beautiful mind”. I think about the thousands who lost everything, including their lives and those of their loved ones during Katrina and Mrs. Bush’s comments about how much fun they must be having getting to camp out in the Astrodome.

For some reason I just can’t muster a tear in grief for this family.

Well I got you beat. My fourth great grands were in Ross as early as 1800. I’m a son of the North side. Dad’s paternal grandparents lived in Deutechtown and his mom grew up in Manchester which DD told me was a tough neighborhood.

Yup, supposedly Hafez Assad’s (daddy of current Syrian dictator) Syrian intelligence waited until there was a meeting of the Beirut Station CIA team and then activated a car bomb under the window. The replacement chief sent to rebuild the station was kidnapped by Syrian allies in what is now Hezbollah. The kidnappers spent a long time time torturing him to death and sending tapes of the torture to the CIA. Lovely folks.

Graduates of Trump University believe NK will denuclearize, but that’s about it.

their nukes gave them a shot at legitimacy
trump gave them legitimacy
that’s how they’re getting trump to the table
they’re not giving that up unless the payoff is huge (and even then)

True Dat. :)

For a while it was reportedly made in a Sam Adams Brewery. The brand disappeared for a while. Do you know if it is back?

Other way around. Sam Adams had some of their beer brewed their in Pittsburgh due to available brewing and bottling capacity. You used to be able to check the labels on the bottles and see that it was brewed/bottled in Pittsburgh rather than Boston. Sam Adams eventually enlarged their capacity in Boston and stopped using Pittsburgh.
