I remember that because I was on a Federal jury trial. We were in the US Courthouse when the case proceedings were stopped and a security scan was done. The scan wasn’t just done with us, it was done with the Los Angeles City, County and State courts at the same time. We were all in the jury room watching the TV along with Federal judges, attorneys and their support staff. We were dismissed for the day at noon. I went home just numb…

I’m on my fourth President I’ve observed at some depth, not counting Bush I and Reagan since I was so young when they left office and Clinton, Bush II, & Obama, they just don’t compare. I hated Bush especially in his first term but I’d been shocked to see him doing the things Trump does daily and his allies just shrug even though it’s completely unpresidential. I hear ya. Nixon was awful and corrupt but there’s something unique for this administration. I can’t describe it. It’s a pit I feel in my stomach when I hear about Trump, see his face, or hear his voice.

If those scenarios have you worried, I think you should probably change your expectations a little.

Robert Mueller is not going to bring down a sitting president, not even this fake one. America is not willing to have a sitting president brought into court for a crime, especially not a white male one. American institutions, American centres of power, won’t allow that to happen. The American President has historically been a revered figure, much more akin to royalty than a democratically elected head of state, and even with this Caligula desecrating it, some people still think of the institution in that way. More importantly, though, this particular president represents the inner soul of millions of Americans, and specifically millions of Americans who have been the most important and privileged members of society for most of the nation’s history. To put him on trial, to ‘bring him down’, would require America’s institutions to consciously tear the hearts out of America’s most cherished and protected constituency. And even now, even with that constituency being so debased, America’s institutions simply are not willing to do that. Republicans won’t allow it. The US media won’t allow it.

The realistic best case scenario involves a weakened president Trump lashing out ineffectually for a couple more years, and hopefully being stopped in his madness from implementing nakedly fascist policies by a Democratic House. The best case scenario after that involves the US media deciding, hopefully, that they stand to gain more by salaciously tearing Trump down than getting him re-elected.

It is the responsibility of Congress, not the courts, to remove a President.

Anything Mueller finds on Trump should be part of an impeachment hearing. Mueller can throw others in jail, but removing the President really is vested in the powers of the combined House and Senate.

It is their responsibility.

1. Trump somehow gets exonerated (terrible precedent and the gloating will be unbearable).

2. Mueller nails almost everyone in Trumps inner circle but can’t get enough on Trump himself to bring him down. Trump survives, throws everyone else under the bus and gets reelected in 2020.

Relax. (1) is what Trump will claim and it won’t be true. (2a) is quite possible, but (2b) is unlikely.

This is in Lubbock, named for Confederate bushwhacker and noted slavery enthusiast Thomas Saltus Lubbock.

Lubbock was a strong secessionist, characterized as a “very worthy and zealous” Knight of the Golden Circle.

The Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) “was” a secret society in the mid-19th-century United States. The original objective of the KGC was to annex a “golden circle” of territories in Mexico, Central America, Confederate States of America, and the Caribbean as slave states, to be led by Maximilian I of Mexico.

As abolitionism in the United States increased after the Dred Scott Decision of 1857, the members proposed a separate confederation of slave states, with U.S. states south of the Mason-Dixon line to secede and to align with other slave states to be formed from the “golden circle”. In either case, the goal was to increase the power of the Southern slave-holding upper class to such a degree that it could never be dislodged.

The original Ku Klux Klan took some of its symbolism and nomenclature, as well as more than a few members, from the KGC. America is not willing to have a sitting president brought into court for a crime, especially not a white male one. American institutions, American centres of power, won’t allow that to happen. The American President has historically been a revered figure, much more akin to royalty than a democratically elected head of state, and even with this Caligula desecrating it, some people still think of the institution in that way. More importantly, though, this particular president represents the inner soul of millions of Americans, and specifically millions of Americans who have been the most important and privileged members of society for most of the nation’s history. To put him on trial, to ‘bring him down’, would require America’s institutions to consciously tear the hearts out of America’s most cherished and protected constituency. And even now, even with that constituency being so debased, America’s institutions simply are not willing to do that. Republicans won’t allow it. The US media won’t allow it.

The realistic best case scenario involves a weakened president Trump lashing out ineffectually for a couple more years, and hopefully being stopped in his madness from implementing nakedly fascist policies by a Democratic House. The best case scenario after that involves the US media deciding, hopefully, that they stand to gain more by salaciously tearing Trump down than getting him re-elected.

Rome, N.Y. — John Collins was standing outside the milk house at his dairy farm this morning when he heard yelling coming from inside. He ran in, he says, and saw his worker, Marcial de Leon Aguilar, pinned up against the window by armed men.

The men did not identify themselves and were screaming at Aguilar, Collins said.

“I run and say, ‘What the hell is going on in here?’” Collins said.

Then the men told Collins they were officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He asked them for a warrant or some paperwork to explain what they were doing. They had none, he said, so he ordered them to get off his property and leave Aguilar alone.

As this happened, Collins said, Aguilar’s children watched. They were waiting nearby for the school bus to come. Collins said the officers put Aguilar in handcuffs and took him across the rural road to their vehicles. At least seven officers had come onto the small farm, Collins said.

Adrian Smith, a spokesman for ICE, said he was looking into the situation and would comment when he knew more.

Although he was fatally wounded, Vallandigham’s demonstration proved his point, and the defendant, Thomas McGehan, was acquitted and released from custody (only to be shot to death four years later in his saloon). Surgeons probed for the pistol ball, thought to have lodged in the vicinity of Vallandigham’s bladder, but were unable to locate it, and Vallandigham died the next day of peritonitis.

Nothing in those memos shows Comey wrongdoing.

It shows that Trump is again intent on obstructing justice and interefering with ongoing investigations with the barrage of tweets this morning.

The Great Recession of 2008 was accompanied by a significant downturn in mileage driven by Americans, i.e. reduced demand, at a time when additional liquids production were coming online from the extensive drilling of previously not-profitable-to-produce resources. This drilling being investments made because of the sharp rise in prices in the years before the Great Recession.

Now that we’ve recovered (well, in some ways) from said recession, mileage driven is up again. But the low prices for crude liquids post-recession means less investment in exploration/drilling.

Thus once again prices are rising.

US gasoline prices are really about American consumption and production. We don’t consume that much OPEC production, and what we used to consume of OPEC was often from Venezuela.

As much as I like Linux, you have to want to become competent at OS management in order to use it, and you generally need a second computer in case something really messes up.

Canonical (parent company of the Ubuntu distro) and AMD have not exactly made installing graphics cards easy in since Ubuntu 14.04. For my card, I have to use the semi-closed source AMDGPU-Pro drivers from AMD, and while they work well, I was having trouble with the cooling fans, as in, they weren’t spinning at all. I was cursing the drivers all yesterday, but I think it’s the card. If it overheats for any reason, it has to cool down to room temperature for the temp sensors to once again tell the fans to spin.

It seems now that I had to invoke the drivers’ power management at boot up for them to work properly in Ubuntu. Also, there are some command-line hacks to spin up the fans before trying any GPU-intensive tasks, like mining.

Meanwhile, all is not rosy with the Windows installation, because the used desktop I bought came with 32-bit Win7 (for a 64-bit CPU) and most mining apps expect a 64-bit OS.

Towns reach a tipping point in which there are not enough young people around to make it interesting for other young people to stay.

We were fortunate enough to live in a village on the Rhine with only 180 souls, but many of them were young families who, like ourselves, had moved there to find an affordable place to raise their kids.

And we have large cities (Mainz/Wiesbaden) about 40 minutes away and Frankfurt less than an hour off.

Linux it still not an OS you’d want to put on granny’s computer, unless she happens to have a CS degree. I just expect problems whenever I go the Linux route. There are now specific Linux distros (which cost money) for mining installations, and remarkably they use previous versions of debian, Ubuntu and GPU drivers, because the kinks in those have long since been worked out. Most home users, though, use free Windows apps for mining now, because they usually work out of the box (so to speak).

Sure would be nice to have competent leadership. We have the opposite. But a couple facts I can not ignore.

1.)The gold/platinum jewelry wholesale/mfg biz has always been effectively locked out of China.

2.) At our trade shows there are Asia sections, frequently Chinese gold makers selling to our biggest buyers here. The big chains that are 1000+ stores, the department stores.

Access to roughly 10x more customers would be a boon. The size of their middle and upper economic classes make room for everyone. We have no opportunity to even try to compete. I think Chinese consumers might just welcome American goods, just as subject to ordinary impulses to own the pretty or cool thing as anywhere.

I want to talk to our trade guys, but under Trump? Hopeless.

There’s a town in Italy that did just that. Its wage-earning population had largely moved away, leaving many properties and businesses vacant. So the mayor of the town decided to invite hundreds of refugees to live there. At last report, it was working well, though ironically the refugees will eventually move on, too.

I had read an article about that. Hopefully, not all the refugees will move on or it will take awhile. If there’s enough young people, it could conceivably take generations for the town to completely decline again..and if the town gets a reputation/culture of being open and accepting refugees and new immigrants, maybe it will always have new people to replace those who leave.

For some places in the US like Detroit, this wouldn’t be as much of an issue. One of Detroit’s big problems is that it was built to have 100s of thousands more people in it than it does now. An injection of 100s thousands of new people could rejuvenate the city and a population that large can set up to be self sustaining.

I was wondering. Does the Republican FreeDon caucus (The Entire GOP) have any more secret but damaging to the Mueller info that anyone can think of they might try to leak?

I know they have been very creative and there is always a good chance they will just create something from nothing. But, it seems they may have played one of their biggest cards and still came up way short.

I bet they are trying to worm their way into Mueller’s staff to find some wrenches they can throw, but that is probably not going to work as Mueller runs a tight ship.

I’d like to be in the Congress meetings with Nunes, Meadows and Jordan this morning just to hear if they think yesterdays “leak” accomplished anything.

You know what Detroit did, something I think is very cool, they built a community of tiny houses (600 sq ft with a reasonable patch of land) and are doing a kind of rent-to-own thing where if the people made x number of years of payments as rentals, it became a mortgage where they owned it. It was completely reasonable in terms of cost and an amazing ability to get people into a homeowner equity economic class that they might have been permanently excluded from previously.

OPEC is a fucking Cartel. Cartel’s are semi-monopolies that exist for the sole purpose of keeping the value of a product artificially high.

Another Cartel is De Beers, which serves the same function in the trade of diamonds.

They distort free markets because that is their purpose. They are, by definition, out of any control so long as they are allowed to exist and cooperate internally.

This is gonna shake some people up…

The Democratic National Committee is suing the Russian government, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks, alleging that the three entities conspired to help President Trump win the 2016 election.

The Washington Post reported Friday that the DNC filed the multi-million dollar lawsuit in federal district court in Manhattan.

“During the 2016 presidential campaign, Russia launched an all-out assault on our democracy, and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump’s campaign,” DNC chairman Tom Perez said in a statement.

“This constituted an act of unprecedented treachery: the campaign of a nominee for President of the United States in league with a hostile foreign power to bolster its own chance to win the presidency.”

The DNC is seeking millions of dollars in damages related to the hacked DNC emails that WikiLeaks published during the campaign, according to the Post.

The lawsuit alleges that hacking and publishing the DNC emails was part of a larger conspiracy to damage Clinton’s campaign and help Trump win the election.

I’m actually kind of surprised at how much blow is still out there, even among the granola-ish crowd I sometimes hang with. I was out seeing a local band recently and everybody was running to the bathroom every few minutes, just like the hair farmers did in the 80s.

Cultural norms aren’t too different between Czech Republic and Slovakia - other than Slovaks tend to be more religious in general (though not like the Poles) being polite is always good. Giving up your seat on a tram for an elderly or disabled person, etc. Making eye contact when you say ‘Na zdraví’ (cheers) in a bar. That sort of thing.

I really don’t mind needles so it’s not that about heroin that scares me. I have a few tattoos already but something instantly addictive, yeah. Plus, with my vices I don’t need it all the time. I don’t smoke or drink the days I work. Wanted to be focused. With more addictive drugs like heroin or coke, you can’t do that.

Coke is fun the first few times you do it. It can stay that way if you “bump” into it on rare occasions.

The moment you do it consecutively it just loses than first time feeling and you never get it again. But then you want that feeling and you try and try and do more and more and then you are in real trouble.

It just sounds so scary. I have some personal reasons too. I’ve known people that have suffered from heroin addiction. Maybe a little hypocritical since I’ve known alcoholics too and I still drink but I believe one can easily socially drink while one can’t socially use heroin.

I ran into some opium laced pot a couple years out of High School, early 70s. The friend who had it didn’t know it was laced. Five of us, two couples and the guy with the herb smoked two joints and then we were trashed.

My girlfriend sort of nodded off in my arms and went limp and all of us were like whoa at that point. The other girl with one of my buddies was experienced and said she would be fine, just lay her down for a bit.

My girlfriend came around after a couple minutes and we all said what the hell happened. We stopped everything and all headed home. That drive to my girlfriend’s parents house was one of the toughest drives I ever did. I felt totally disconnected and had an almost don’t care about the traffic lights, etc. feeling.

The next day the guy that had the herb tossed it out. That stuff was nasty. And it taught me I didn’t want a damn thing to do with opium based drugs of any kind.

Based on the precedents from the Clinton years (President Clinton getting deposed while in office), the answer is that yeah, he’ll have to submit.

Moreover, as with the DNC lawsuit, the burden of proof is far lower in civil actions than in criminal ones. No need to prove the cases beyond a reasonable doubt.

Interesting thing about that lawsuit:

The lawsuit echoes a similar legal tactic that the Democratic Party used during the Watergate scandal. In 1972, the DNC filed suit against then-President Richard Nixon’s reelection committee seeking $1 million in damages for the break-in at Democratic headquarters in the Watergate building.

The suit was denounced at the time by Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, who called it a case of “sheer demagoguery” by the DNC. But the civil action brought by the DNC’s then-chairman, Lawrence F. O’Brien, was ultimately successful, yielding a $750,000 settlement from the Nixon campaign that was reached on the day in 1974 that Nixon left office.
