Roy Clark was one of only two people I’ve ever seen play a different tune with each hand on the same guitar at the same time. The other was Jim Stafford, but Jim’s the only one I ever saw play a guitar with his feet. Nothing on YootUbe—it was on TV before there was VHS.

Clicking this kicks me over to a youtube window. My computer is refusing to play the video right now (I have to keep refreshing until it decides to play it) but in the sidebar are links to Mark Knopfler’s guitar solo on “Tunnel of Love” Jim Stafford playing “Malagueana” at the ripe young age of 73, Stafford playing the M-16 assault guitar on the Tonight Show, among others. Man, I have a lot to catch up on. I always liked this one of Stafford flipping teh bird on the Smothers Brothers (mistitled as Branson MO)

Bringing back memories of Roy Buchanan. He played a lot of gigs back in Western PA/Ohio/Wheeling Stampede when I was in college. Saw him several times live. Dad loved this song of his. Was so sad when he passed away.

Jim Stafford had a variety show on…I want to say CBS…in the early ’70s. One show he joked: “You know, cats are like Baptists—you know they’re out raising hell, but you can’t ever quite catch them at it”.

Of course, the next week he was forced to apologize. The usual “Sorry if anyone was offended” not-pology, then: “Just to make it clear, I was born a Baptist, I was raised a Baptist, and I’ll die a Baptist.”…pause…”I’ve got no ambition at all!”

That was the final show.

Remember that a lot of the Evangelicals’ support for Israel has nothing to do with any love of Jews or the people there, it has to do with fulfilling the End Times prophecies and kick-starting Armageddon.

Yes, there certainly have been quite a number of predictions.

My grandfather was a Missouri farmer and used to talk about “Old moss-backed farmers” who would sell everything, buy a casket and wait next to the casket for Judgement Day.

One of the more famous predicted dates was in 1843. When it didn’t happen, the date was revised to 1844. The Adventist and Jehovah Witness movements came out of that one.

And according to wikipedia the “Baha’is believe that Christ did return as Miller predicted in 1844, with the advent of the Báb”.

It took me a long time to find people who practice a sort of Christianity I can relate to: not enough to convert me or anything, but there are people who are aware of the history of their Scriptures, that they were created by people, perhaps inspired by God but not dictated literally by some angel or divine being, and certainly not to be interpreted literally or outside their historical context.

I think Episcopalians do it best. for the most part they seem to like the separation of Caesar, they like to drink and get high, and they believe in loving one another. My folks moved from Southern/American Baptist to Episcopal Church. Mom said she liked the liturgy. They had moved from PHX to Los Gatos, CA. I think she liked the wine.

Martin Lewis, a British UK consumer advocate, is suing Facebook for defamation of character. He claims over fifty adverts have been put up on Facebook with him “endorsing” such things as Bitcoin. Complaints to Facebook do not stop that.

He notes that as he nor his organisation endorse nothing, much less funny money, that constitutes defamation, and the Advertising Standards Authority agrees.

The MoneySavingExpert founder says at least 50 fake ads bearing his name have appeared on the social media platform, causing reputational damage to him.

Many of the adverts show his face alongside endorsements that he has not actually made, and often link to articles carrying false information.

Facebook says misleading ads are not allowed and any reported are removed.

On Monday, Mr Lewis is due to lodge court papers at the High Court for a defamation case against Facebook.

He is seeking damages but has pledged that any money he receives will go to anti-scam charities.

Several of the adverts tout schemes with titles such as Bitcoin code and Cloud Trader which, according to Mr Lewis, are fronts for binary trading firms outside the EU.

Binary trading is a form of financial transaction which the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has warned consumers against.

Those are some of the folks I hang out with in Frankfurt, the expats at the Church of Christ the King (I joke about it being a secret Elvis cult) and I have even been known to attend services there, but I just cannot bring myself to recite the Nicene Creed.

We were also close friends with the Lutheran pastor in our village where we helped put on the kiddie Christmas service even though we were not members, it was just a nice community atmosphere and I am enough of a “Christian” to find it important to share that part of our cultural heritage with our kids.

I of course sorted them out on the significance of the birth of Christ as I saw it; I explained that people always celebrated mid-winter, they were afraid that the Sun was going away and would leave them in darkness and the day that the light started returning was cause of celebration and how Jesus came to symbolize that for mankind: that we were worried that we were so sinful that we would descend into darkness and he was seen as a symbol that the light of humanity would return.

Pretty heavy stuff for little kids, but I think it stuck with them.

a through-put heater? those have the advantage that you can use the hot tap water directly for tea and other warm beverages, something you should never do with water from a heater tank

I’m sure they sell overkill too. I have 10 GPM of 120F water and with two low flow shower heads running, a kitchen faucet, and a water saving dishwasher filling for an instant, and a water saving clothes washer filling for an instant and I ‘m still not near 10 GPM on the hot water line. It’s nice to not heat all that tank water I don’t use all month. Whether I save much over the year is the real question.

On Sunday I posted a link to the Hubblesite image they put up on Friday, to celebrate the anniversary of the HST. Beautiful image of the Lagoon Nebula.

What I didn’t do at that time, so as not to soil the experience of viewing such a pretty picture, is a rant about the redesign of the Hubblesite webpages.

Like so many sites, in an attempt to make it prettier, they’ve dumbed it down.

Sad.

Anyway, what is more sad are the descriptions now of what the images supposedly portray. The problem is they are now attempting to avoid as much science-terminology as possible. But this makes some very grossly misleading attempts to explain what is going on.

The difficult thing for any receivers of large amounts of tax money is annually justifying the expense. So I understand the need to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Still, at some point one just can’t start pretending that any particular item can be rightly explained in only every-day words.

Not that a description has to get all stilted in mathematics. It is possible to communicate clearly so someone with a high-school education can follow the description.

But I think some of the new descriptions I’ve come across at the Hubblesite are poorly done.

And that is one of the sad things - they don’t include links for those “geeks” who want more information.

I can go on arxiv.org and find the papers for whatever research, assuming the researchers have published a draft at least, that applies to this or that Hubble image.

But most people probably don’t have experience doing that.

Associated with each Hubblesite image ought to be, I propose, a short page that describes why said image was necessary, and who uses it (note that one thing the current new site design does do is show you what the HST is viewing “right now” along with the principal investigator’s name, so that is good.)

Speaking of space satellites doing astronomy, this coming Wednesday the Gaia project is releasing their second round of data, which will be a dramatic increase in size over their first release of data.

Gaia is mapping our neighborhood of the Milky Way, as well as the brightest deep sky sources, and btw over 14 thousand objects in our own solar system - most of them asteroids.

It’s a massive undertaking:

Also, radioactive dating doesn’t work because radioisotopes decayed much quicker in the past. Never mind that if they decayed billions of years worth in a few thousand years, the Earth would have vaporized. These people aren’t right in the head.

OK. Lets lay it out this way.

1. God’s doing her thing with the angels, but even their singing is getting a bit old and Lucifer although pretty, is a major prick. So she decides, hey I’m going to make a universe.
2. So God drafts up the design for a universe along with the set of rules and properties that will govern it. It’s going to be awesome, with lots of fireworks especially at first. It’s sterile though and she needs something to serve as a diversion after things quiet down.
3. So she decides to tweak it a bit so that after 10 billion years (in the new universe’s “time”) on an unassuming planet around a rather pathetic yellow star in an outer arm of a modestly sized spiral galaxy bags of amino acid would start self replicating.
4. About 3.75 billion years later those bags of amino acids would lead to hairless pink apes that walked on two legs who could both sing praises and cuss, build and destroy, and solve the mysteries of her creation and dedicate themselves to ignorance.
5. God then says screw waiting 13.75 billions years, I’m skipping to the good part and selects the scene with a mostly hairless ape bashing in the skull of another mostly hairless ape with a mammoth bone and hits play.

It’s only when I accidentally clicked on one last night, and got a fake story about two people supposedly appearing on the BBC2 show Dragon’s Den with, yup, a BitCoin generator device that supposedly impressed the hosts. (Complete with screen grabs from the actual show that were clearly for something else entirely.), that I twigged what was going on. Even the “deposit” asked for was the same as the “Martin Lewis” one- £250.

It’s quite clearly a pyramid scam. Oddly enough, I had read something about this sort of thing a couple of days ago in this (quite in-depth) article. There’s a whole culture of pyramid schemes based on binary options trading. And they appear to be moving into BitCoin…

In any case, I think Charles might want to look into his ads…

The YEC people have essentially rewritten the laws of physics to suit their notions of Creation, but they also have to explain why those same laws changed just in time for us to exploit them to create modern technology. It got purchased by a NJ family after the movie, and a few years later McQueen wrote the family requesting that they sell him his car. By then, it was their car.

They’ve had it for decades in the family, and put it into storage for about 15-20 years. Only in the past year have they acknowledged publicly that they own the car (which has all the movie hardpoints/rigging for stunts on the chasis, etc.) and have put in on display including at the Washington Mall.

Pretty much. The network’s security depends on it being as decentralized as possible, with miners and node operators spread across the world. Since they each need a full copy of the blockchain to run their programs, that redundancy secures the data.

I know enough about BitCoin to know the days of home users mining coins on their laptops are long gone, so I knew straight away that a “BitCoin generator” wouldn’t have got through the door at Dragon’s Den, as it wouldn’t be anything less than the size of a huge server farm. (That, and also the fact that Dragon’s Den obviously hasn’t been cancelled, as per the clickbait headline.)

Interestingly enough, the Sun’s money pages also reported on the fake “Dragon’s Den” ads, the same day as that article I mentioned on my previous post. (They also have a more flattering picture of Deborah Meaden.)

Makes me wonder if those “Mum from [INSERT WIFI LOCATION HERE] makes eleventy bazillion [INSERT CURRENCY BASED ON WIFI LOCATION HERE] per week!!” type ads are of a similar ilk.

He enabled this shooting by making guns available to a person who should never have had them. Law enforcement showed undue deference to the father and the son.

I also have to wonder if they would have taken the same tact if the family were black (discriminatory treatment by police is well documented).

This Waffle House shooting is a perfect example of how screwed up the gun regulations are in this country. It is a patchwork of stupid laws that do not work.

The whole legality/law side of guns needs to be completely redone to match the times and the guns available. There are too many holes and too much reliance on a person doing the right thing.

And we need the new laws to be national laws that carry from one state to another.

It needs to be made clear and it needs to be made the same for everyone.

It’s not that he owns more than 800 houses or that he got money from HUD, it’s that he traded positive press for an increase in the amount of loan money he received. The KKK attempted to march through my town in 1988, so we’ve had plenty of that stuff in my lifetime.

A good portion of this is that the president and the GOP have given permission for these people to come out into the open. And white people are so scared that they’re willing to let these people run free. Some of it, though, is that everything is now national. I know about small things happening in places I didn’t know about before.

But, our side’s a little out of practice at telling people to get bent. We’ve been used to not having to deal with these people, and dealing with reasonable people, that as those types of discussions have creeped into discussions, we haven’t really known how to react. But we’re getting better fast.

Hey not just rats. My dog does this too. Give her a treat and she will run outside to go eat it in privacy. If the door is closed she will stand there drooling on my hardwood floors with a treat in her mouth until I come over and open the door for her. I’m not sure that’s the point. S.E. Cupp’s argument appears to be along the lines of: “Our soldiers in WW2 didn’t fight Hitler so that someone who previously supported someone I support can subsequently change their mind on that support”. Which, if you ask me, is pretty much the opposite of realty. The argument becomes even more nonsensical considering Shania Twain isn’t even a US citizen.

Whether or not Mrs Twain is making a strategic move with her mea culpa is a separate argument.

He had stolen a car from the Brentwood BMW dealership and run from police on Tuesday, Aaron said.

Brentwood police briefly chased him through rush hour traffic, Aaron said, but he got away. Police used the car’s GPS to track it to Reinking’s apartment complex, but did not identify him as a suspect at that time.

another hobby horse: if you want to use a gun to defend your home and family, then I guess that is your right, but a public active shooter situation is an entirely different setting. you need years of training, experience, good situational awareness and nerves of steel or you risk doing more damage then you might prevent.

What a complete jack-up of police responsibility.

If he was from Chicago and had been stopped at the White House and pulled all the other crap he would already be jailed in Illinois if not dead by cop.

It would never have gotten to this point.

I remember hearing about air quality studies in the days after 9/11 when commercial flights were grounded and that the scientists were shocked by the improvements in such a short time. The cumulative effect of banning burning, removing lead from petrol, and moving to cleaner burning fuels has resulted in real, demonstrative improvements. And it could all easily be undone—and may be if Pruitt is completely successful
