While Reinking had remained at large, police had warned he was dangerous and said he showed “signs of significant instability,” Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, said at a news briefing earlier Monday.

Aaron pointed to Reinking’s arrest outside the White House last year as well as a string of bizarre encounters with law enforcement officials in Illinois. Reinking once told law enforcement officers that the singer Taylor Swift had been harassing and stalking him — a delusion that authorities in Illinois said Reinking had had for years.

Oh, OK.

It would be nice if the Iranians could look at their own situation and note that there’s a lot of hard line “religious” asshats in control of their government and then look at ours and recognize the same thing exists here and that at least some portion of our electorate is trying to toss them out.

In other words, both countries have their share of shitheads that need to be ousted, along with decent people trying to fight for rights and dignity for all. We should try to embrace those commonalities instead of looking at the dickheads in each countries leadership and concluding we can’t if not work together at least fight in parallel for a better future.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of them do. But, the hard line religious asshats are in control, in both countries, and they get to set policy.

From multiple stories, including this one:

“There’s certainly evidence that there’s some sort of mental health issues involved,” Tazewell County Sheriff Robert Huston said. But he said deputies returned the guns to Reinking’s father on the promise that he would “keep the weapons secure and out of the possession of Travis.”

Reinking’s father “has now acknowledged giving them back” to his son, Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron said.

Phone calls to a number listed for the father, Jeffrey Reinking, went unanswered.

It is not clear why Reinking moved recently from Morton, Illinois, and if it had anything to do with being near Swift, who has a home in Nashville. Police say he was employed in construction for a while, and there would have been enough work in the booming city for him.

Police say Reinking drove into the Waffle House parking lot in his gold Chevy Silverado pickup early Sunday and sat there for about four minutes before opening fire outside the restaurant.

The victims fatally shot in the parking have been identified as Taurean Sanderlin, 29, of Goodlettsville, and Joe Perez, 20, of Nashville.

Sanderlin was an employee at the restaurant.

I think there’s a way to build support for it. I would structure it as a sales tax, so the person/entity would pay when they bought the stock - it wouldn’t be a capital gains tax - so if you’ve got a mutual fund account, it’s not really going to affect your retirement.

“Could potentially” had better soon be “has been charged with multiple counts.”

There are no accidents in handling firearms. The dad gave an unstable and dangerous son access to guns, despite police telling him not to have them.

That makes him an accomplice.

That makes him criminally liable.

Those deaths are on him too.

re: #64 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis

There are no accidents in handling firearms.

The gun people I know say that all the time, and they’re right.

The dad gave an unstable and dangerous son access to guns, despite police telling him not to have them.

I did not know that police told him that his son can’t have the guns.

That makes him an accomplice.

Yep

That makes him criminally liable.

Hopefully they lock him up.

Those deaths are on him too.

Yep. He doesn’t have the excuse of being delusional like the person he armed, so I consider him even more responsible. If you give a delusional person a gun, you’re setting them on a very bad path.

Dad will likely never be charged. The DC White House trespassing charges were dismissed after completion of pretrial diversion, He did community service. So, there is likely a reasonable argument that technically the local law enforcement had no legal call to seize his weapons or withdraw his permits

The headline:

Bernie Sanders to announce plan to guarantee every American a job

The key takeaway from a 1200 word story:

A representative from Sanders’s office said they had not yet done a cost estimate for the plan or decided how it would be funded.

Sanders proposed a small tax on stock transfers during his campaign to fund education, and that was a non-starter for a large portion of people.

Plus there’s the issue of all the middle class people who hold shares in their retirement accounts or whatnot who would also be opposed to that.

I would slap the tax on brokerage houses.

I’d just create a higher tax bracket and tax dividends/long term capital gains at regular rates and slap an additional penalty on short term capital gains. Shares held in retirement accounts would retain their tax advantages. To keep the tax code “simple” I’d raise the standard deduction and collapse the lower brackets into fewer brackets.

1) using a phone to try and avoid domestic law enforcement surveillance?
2) using a smart phone that is most likely being tapped by multiple foreign agencies because Trump is not exactly one to keep opsec or handling of classified info at the top of the list of things to do.

He probably doesn’t want the calls logged in the official logs, and doesn’t want people knowing he’s spending all his time talking with Hannity and others while they’re all subject to further investigation.

I think there’s a way to build support for it. I would structure it as a sales tax, so the person/entity would pay when they bought the stock - it wouldn’t be a capital gains tax - so if you’ve got a mutual fund account, it’s not really going to affect your retirement.

I’m not financially-savvy enough to figure something like that out. (I don’t own any stock either - you have to be rich for that.)

The only place in town where I would get a background check is the gun shop.

Mr. Thin Skin can’t be one-upped or shown-up example #1,897 and counting.

Nicole has Ashley Parker on and they are talking about Trump’s tweets over the weekend. They were talking about Rudy being picked to be on the Trump team as a lawyer.

Ashley said the only reason he was chosen is because he is known.

Trump apparently had a burr up his ass about all the news reports saying high-powered lawyers have been reported turning down The Donald and refusing to represent him.

Yeah. Imagine that. The Don can’t have it be seen that no ones will work with him.

What to do, what to do?

Trump most likely: “Rudy has a name everyone knows and he won’t turn me down. Call him. Send out the tweets”

good day to one and all

klys and I and mrs dm had a wonderful day and a half in orlando
klys and i had a great half marathon race

details will follow - not today. im parachuting in then gotta go

this waffle house shooter is exactly what i’ve been railing about for years

It’s the irresponsible transfers that cause most of the trouble. And if I understand it, the father KNEW his son lost his license.

Further, if the son in fact was the legal owner of the guns when he was taken in and they were confiscated, then law enforcement effectively transferred legal ownership to the father.

Do they have that power?

Well, whether they did or didnt, at that moment the guns became dad’s total and sole responsibility. He accepted possession. At that moment you control all your weapons at all times. And that includes who and how you transfer them to someone else

Every background check system will be rendered meaningless unless every single transfer requires determining that the buyer has not been barred from possessing.

THIS is the test case where EVERY RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNER should be clamboring for the father’s head on a pike.

If the gun owners won’t help cull these people out, then there really is no choice but to go after them all.

More at another time

“Assumes facts not in evidence. I can take a guess where his son picked up this “Sovereign Citizen” bullshit.”

Since daddy returned his guns to him after telling law enforcement that he wouldn’t, I’m going with daddy as being the source of the “SC” BS. Daddy probably thought the gubmint couldn’t tell him what to do with the guns in his own house, so returning the guns to his son was a “personal” not a gubmint decision. Now daddy is dodging the media. His neighbors should do a ”Milo” on him by standing outside of his house on the sidewalk and shouting, “You enabled a murdered!” until he gets tired of it and leaves their neighborhood. They should treat him the same way those patrons in the NYC restaurant treated Yiannopoulos. Yiannnopoulous high-tailed it out of there, took to Facebook and started his “Poor me, I can’t sit down in a NYC restaurant and eat a meal” Facebook tour.

This guy you’re responding to is a real wingnut. He’s now spreading the “attacker was Middle Eastern” thing about Toronto.

That might be true, though only one reporter has said anything about that. The point is the dog whistle though (all “Middle Eastern”) people are bad.

I wonder what his opinion on the Nashville mass-murder is?

After a quick view on Google News, I have been able to note a couple of things about the Toronto van assailant (which the asshole schtev69 ought to have been able to do as well)

1. In 2018, the odds that something like this that goes down in public is likely to be live-videoed are overwhelming.
2. Said live video is usually available immediately or near-immediately.
3. The van driver arrested for the incident does not (just from appearances) look “Middle-Eastern” at all.
4. Toronto police seem to have been able to corner and arrest the guy without reflexively initiating a gunfight (even though the suspect appeared to be armed).VERY professional.
5. (the worst part) Any assclown with access to a computer can start any sort of rumor about these incidents, which will then likely be taken as fact by a non-trivial segment of the Internet: as long as it triggers the “right” sort of prejudice.

117
Backwoods_Sleuth  Apr 23, 2018 • 1:49:39pm

ah…here is the culprit:

The main course of rack of lamb will be served alongside Carolina rice jambalaya and cooked in the “New Orleans tradition” with herbs grown in the White House gardens. The tart will be served with honey made at the White House, and crème fraiche ice cream. Perhaps surprisingly, the meal will be served with American wines, a move that the White House says is meant to “embody the historic friendship” between the two countries.

Erickson and I live in the same Middle GA city, so I’m sure he knows what Jambalaya is. Every year in March we host the Cherry Blossom Festival and a part of the two-week event is dedicated to southern food. Erickson is an attention wh*re. Since he wasn’t consulted about the menu for the state dinner, he had to portray himself as a regular old country boy with simple tastes when he’s anything but that. I’ve lived in GA my entire life, over 65 years, and I can tell you that not everyone in the state likes fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato pie or thinks they’re appropriate foods to serve at a top level social event.

Outside of America, it’s actually normal for cops to not shoot people, even if they’re asking for it or black, or even both.

Outside of the US, cops as a rule are trained that their role is to keep the peace and preserve public safety and order. Sometimes this can involve being intimidating - someone commented on the footage of the police marching in formation in Georgia, and that cops should not be marching in military formation. Actually, when faced with a potentially violent public situation, that sort of organised, military-style marching is very much what they should do - present a firm, organised stance that can act as a deterrent simply by them showing up. What they then did, by pointing rifles at the non-Nazis, was revolting but not surprising for US cops. But by and large, Western world police outside America are trained to defuse situations, keep the peace, and preserve lives. Drawing a weapon and pointing it in anger is a huge deal. Actually firing it even more so.

In America, though, police are taught that their main role is to have gunfights with bad guys, and to crack skulls if the bad guys don’t have guns. And it shows.

That may make the tax code simpler for certain people in lower income groups, but fewer brackets tend not to make calculations simple; the complexity of our code is the determination of income and deductions, not the tax rates. One of the negative aspects of raising the standard deduction is that it may harm charitable giving.

While we don’t know yet what happened, watch how fast they drop it if:

a) He was a Trump supporter.
b) He is a white guy.

On the other hand, the foghorns will go to eleven if he is anything other than a white guy.

So we’re back to sweating what a murder’s ethnicity is going to be, dreading the reaction? Just like the Cascade Mall shooter last year. “He’s Turkish.” “Oh, no!” (Turned out he was a Christian and a Trump supporter, but that didn’t matter….)

Whelp.

CTV interviewed the MP who represents that riding in Toronto, Ali Eshassi. Stand by for more derp. Plus, he is a member of the Liberal Party.

Three times as many atheists as Muslims though, so maybe we’ll get the slagging. Or maybe the multi-cultural nature of that district.

Breakdown of the Willowdale riding by language:

Languages: 35.7% English, 19.1% Chinese, 9.8% Persian, 9.2% Korean, 5.8% Russian, 2.6% Tagalog, 1.7% Italian, 1.6% Spanish, 1.3% French, 1.2% Arabic
Religions: 46.0% Christian (20.6% Catholic, 4.3% Christian Orthodox, 3.2% Presbyterian, 2.4% United Church, 2.4% Anglican, 1.8% Baptist, 6.5% Pentecostal, 11.3% Other), 11.6% Muslim, 6.6% Jewish, 2.9% Buddhist, 1.8% Hindu, 30.4% No religion

I love reading your posts for many reasons, but one is that my mother is from west-central Georgia (maybe 20 or 30 miles south of Newnan) and I spent a good part of many summers there with my grandparents. As such, my understanding of Georgia culture is terribly skewed. In family lore there were things to be proud of: grandfather’s dad was illiterate and cruel, but he worked hard and put his siblings through UGA (and his children). But in my child’s heart, I knew he did it on the backs of the underpaid black Americans who worked for him in his fields and peach business. I think I won’t say much more (for one, I have to go cook dinner), but I think you know the story. Suffice it to say that at his funeral in the early 1980s the black community stood outside of the Primitive Baptist church he attended while the white community sat inside for the service. In attendance was Herman Talmadge.

re: #164 majii

I wish there was someway to fix the racism problem in the USA. I can only make sure I don’t engage in it, and don’t permit others around me from using slurs or such.

Aside from my limited experience with segregated schools, where I went to an all-white school in K and part of 1st until my mother got my sister and me the hell out of Dixie, I remember clearly one story.

We lived on base at NAS Patuxent River in Maryland as children. My father was in Vietnam at the time.

Across the street from us was a white woman named Thelma with a daughter named Wilma. Next door to us were two African-American children named Marshall and Sylvia. All of us were the same age.

My sister and I were allowed in Marshall and Sylvia’s home and they were allowed in ours. Wilma’s mother would never let her play with us when either Marshall or Sylvia was with us. This caused a lot of friction between Wilma and her mother.

One day Sylvia was climbing the rose trellis outside our house, and my mother yelled out at her as loud as she could “Get off that trellis or I’ll through a bucket of mop water on you.” Sylvia’s mother called back “Don’t come dripping on my clean floor!”

Thelma would come to my mother to try to figure out how to thread the needle of racism with her child … my mother’s opinion was “that’s her problem.” Eventually Wilma was allowed to play at our house when Marshall and Sylvia were at it, she could play at Marshall and Sylvia’s house, but letting Marshall and Sylvia in her house was a bridge too far for her.

Well, I’m sure the Israelis have recordings, and the Brits, but the Germans may be a more likely source. Perhaps they could pass them on to the WashPO pretending they were coming from Wikileads?

I was laughing watching that pup. She reminds me of Penelope Penny. Ms. PP roams the kitchen looking for anything I might drop from the countertop when I’m cooking. Last night it was sugar and flour since I was baking a pound cake. She thought she was going to get more chicken because she knew I was baking some. She’d already eaten her daily ration but seemed to think I’d give her more. Yes, the chicken I was cooking was for her, but she didn’t know I was baking it for her to eat for the next 3-4 days. That child sure loves chicken, and I’m at fault because I indulge her by buying it and cooking it especially for her. When it gets close to 8 PM, she gets antsy because she knows it’s time for mama to cut her chicken up and put it in her special bowl. I’m guilty, and I’m the reason she’s soooo spoiled. Besides her grain-free Purina kibble, Ms. PP likes chicken, bananas, Parmesan cheese, vanilla wafers, and milk.

HOUSTON — Former President George H.W. Bush has been hospitalized in Houston with an infection, just after attending the funeral of his wife Barbara, a spokesman said Monday.

My parents were mere pikers at a mere 44 years. My mother died first, and it took my dad two years to get over it; but he only had another six months after that, which I think is very sad. On the bright side, he went suddenly, in his sleep, and had played a little golf only two days before.

I have to go back to my Great Great Grandfather to find a ‘died within a year’ pair in my family. That was in 1900. Everyone else lasted years, sometimes decades after their spouse passed.

Watching the video of the Toronto cop taking down the perp, I keep thinking

When did LEOs in America become such cowards that they don’t have a mindset of “arrest first”, but “save my own ass by shooting first and not necessarily needing any provocation”? Isn’t that why so may unarmed people, especially POC, get shot?

That man was obviously full-out ready to get “suicided by a cop”, but the cop kept his cool, called his bluff and made the arrest. And it was obvious why. The perp was a coward who couldn’t kill himself.

Why is it so very different across Lake Erie, where a child gets shot down in cold blood for pointing a toy and going “Pow! Pow!?

We have deadly serious LEO problem in this country and the NRA is a damn big part of the reason with their insistence that SovCits should be able to outgun Mr. PoPo.

The closest I can think of is my maternal grandfather’s parents. His mom died first about a year before he was drafted for Korea and his Dad died four years later, only a month after he married. I unfortunately don’t have any photos of them. My only great grandparent pair I lack photos of. Funnily enough, I do have photos of his mom’s mother, brother, and sister. He always told us that my mom strongly resembled his mom and that she was a tall woman but I don’t know if he meant tall relatively or actually tall.

Yeah but he doesn’t have a funny hat. // Joking aside, this reminds me of when Wingnut friend tried to pull using Charlie Kirk “Trump has appointed more women to cabinet posts than any President” in history and had only a photo of one cabinet level officer, Nikki Haley. I nudged him and reminded him about HRC, Loretta Lynch, Kathleen Sebeilus, Susan Rice, and even though they weren’t cabinet but also Justices Kagan/Sotomayor and Janet Yellen. Honestly I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised if he passes in the next year or so. It’s not uncommon among folks who have been married for 50+ years to both pass within about a year. Sure, by that point they are of similar age which makes it more likely, but grief is also a stressor on the body.

My dad never recovered from his depression after my Mom passed - he went a few months later, despite the medical diagnosis - he died of a broken heart.

All of my great-grandparents died before I was born. And it’s funny…after posting that this particular set had a happy, untroubled life, I remembered that this great-grandfather’s father went through a bankruptcy at his business in 1936, which was the same year he and his wife both died. So maybe they weren’t as happy as they appear in retrospect. History tells funny stories.

Committee members have been told about allegations related to improper conduct in various stages of his career, two sources said.

None of the senators would publicly detail the specifics of the allegations. A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A while back, my siblings and I were discussing longevity in the family, since Dad’s due to turn 100 in June. One sister asked, “Which one of us will make it to 100? Will any?”

I spent a lot of time looking at our family history. I noted that while we all like to remember the Great Grandmother who lived to 100, or the Grandmother who lived to 97, we also had a lot of ancestors who died in their 60s.

It’s a common sentiment in fascist failed democracies. It’s the underlying purpose behind the push of ‘government is always bad’ - loss of faith in the value of good government, and a resignation that nothing will change. I am sure it’s something you would hear often in places like Russia and Hungary.

I lost three of my six living great grands to that pandemic. Brutal.

There was a family legend since disproven that my grandfather had twin siblings that died during it. Not true as it turns out. Fate is cruel. My great grandfather’s first wife died of TB. If she hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here. I also keep on thinking about how different things would be if it was my immigrant ancestor that stayed in Europe rather than crossing the Atlantic. I really think that’s why while I obviously see myself as American also haev no problem seeing beyond that too.

It’s a common sentiment in fascist failed democracies. It’s the underlying purpose behind the push of ‘government is always bad’ - loss of faith in the value of good government, and a resignation that nothing will change. I am sure it’s something you would hear often in places like Russia and Hungary.

That’s exactly why Ronald Reagan pushed that line.

Conservatism is fundamentally opposed to democracy.

We always have problems here finding people to run for the village board (but never problems finding complaints about it).

When it was proposed that we actually “pay” the village board, I threw all my support behind it. ($100 a month isn’t exactly a get-rich-quick scheme.)

A bunch of people complained when we passed the ordinance. I pointed out “perhaps some people will file to run for office then to repeal it.”

Wow man. My longest lived great grand I think was my Dad’s paternal grandmother. 88 when she died when Dad was 16. Only grandparent Dad has memories of. His father’s father died before he was born. His mom’s mom died when his mom was just a child and her dad died when Dad was a toddler. Fortunately, I got in touch with one of Dad’s older cousins who knew Pap-Pap and gave me some good stories. Apparently the man didn’t like Truman. Unfortunately my cousin hasn’t told me whether it was for lefty or righty reasons because as you know, no one liked Truman then. If I had to guess it would be for lefty since his daughter, my Nana was a dyed in the wool Dem and Pap Pap was a working class Catholic of Irish descent but I don’t know.

Charles, I’d have to agree here; Chuck’s a dick and I doubt his soon-to-be ex-wife is much better, but I kind of having a problem with the idea of a front page post about their divorce. For people not in the know about them (which is almost everyone else), it just seems scurrilous and titillating for no real good reason, even though most of us know why it’s a thing. It’s one thing for us to discuss it here in the comments, but it’s seems to me to be a exceedingly bad idea to put it as a Page or post on the front page.

One of my Great Grandfathers went by the name of Wiley J. Banning, which sounds like something either Grouch Marx or WC Fields might have used. He was an Osteopath, and we have one of his cards, with his pic on one side and a glowing description of the wonders of Osteopathy on the other. It reads like pure snake oil, and I say that knowing that my Mom’s side of the family is chock full of Osteopaths. I suspect they got in under the wire to be taken seriously as physicians, and nowadays Osteopaths (D.O.s) are trained much like M.D.s, but that card - wow.

Yes, he did. And he also used her as a shield against accusations of racism and white supremacism. “Oh yeah?! Why don’t you tell my hot Asian wife I’m a white supremacist?”

Chuck has repeatedly tried to dox other people’s divorce records for his various smear campaigns.

If I don’t write this up (I’m only wavering because I don’t want to drag Bernadette into Chuck’s nightmare universe any more than she already is, and I certainly don’t want to inadvertently put her in danger), someone else will.

Personally I’d let it go. Writing it up is not a good look because while she very well might suck as much as he does she never tried to make herself into public figure. One of the more painful aspects of my own divorce was the way one of our gossipy mutual acquaintances cruelly turned our misery into a public spectacle.

Me too! My family were all late to marry, for various reasons. Three of my grandparents died before I could talk with them (I do have photos with all three); the fourth, my mothers mother was absolutely lovely, I lived with her for a short time and I have her grandmother (sic) clock chiming in my living room. But even she died when I was fifteen.

My mother has her maternal grandmother’s Westminster chime mantle clock. My mother repaired it many years ago when the motor died (she found a replacement), and I repaired it the last time I was there (the chimes out of tune).

I also disagree with the guys assessment that Twain was racist against blacks from his example in Huckleberry Finn (history also backs up that he wasn’t one towards blacks; Wikipedia does point out he wasn’t as kind to Native Americans when he was young, which seems to have changed a bit as he got older). The guy fails to notice both how Train gets onto those who go after Jim, as well as how Jim’s tone and manners change when he’s on the raft with Huck. He also fails to realize who Twain’s target is: Someone young, who might pick up the book as a kid, thinking it’s about Huck’s travels when it’s about Huck and Jim’s relationship.
