Finished watching the interview with Toronto’s police chief. He notes the investigation is being led by the police (and not the RCMP or CSIS). At the present time they are treating it as simply a criminal act, though if the evidence leads them elsewhere they will update people.

He was in New York for a conference, and when the news broke hopped a plane back to Toronto immediately.

In the saga of Les Hughey, Lecher Molester Lead Pastor of Highland Church Scottsdale, three more women have come forward and the Modesto Bee has their stories. The difference? These women say they were fondled by Hughey when he was the youth pastor at Scottsdale Bible Church, another very conservative megachurch. Hughey was at Scottsdale Bible from the mid-80s to the mid-90s, when he left to found Highland.

modbee.com

A couple other things. Apparently a number of bigwigs at the so-called “Alliance Defending Freedom” (aka, the guys who want to make it legal for “Christians” to discriminate against LGBT persons) are either on the board at Highlands, or go to Highlands. Also, the COO of PureFlix (yeah, makes films sanitized for your protection) also goes to Highlands and is on a board, I guess?

It’s hard to say where Les Hughey is right now. Buried deep on the church’s website is this tiny item, which indicates he may be out of the country from April 23 (today) to May 6. One would think that “leave of absence” means “not leading church tours of Israel” but I wouldn’t bet money on it.

Join Les and Chris Hughey and Mark and Mary Beth Yule for a faith-deepening “bucket list” trip to Israel and an optional Greek Cruise extension.

As of right now, I’m still planning to protest at Highlands next Sunday. I’m hoping the heat is such that Hughey is forced to resign or his board fires him outright. This is a guy who should never ever have pastored anything.

EXCLUSIVE: Joy Reid Claims Newly Discovered Homophobic Posts From Her Blog Were ‘Fabricated’

44
Anymouse 🌹  Apr 23, 2018 • 7:54:00pm

re: #43 Anymouse 🌹

From the article:

These anti-gay articles from The Reid Report, a site that pre-dated Reid’s former MSNBC show of the same name, were originally shared on Twitter by user Jamie_Maz who found them using the Wayback Machine — an Internet archiving service that takes periodic screenshots of popular web pages to preserve them.

While the amateur sleuth provided Mediaite with legitimate links to all of the posts they tweeted screenshots of, neither the actual defunct site nor its archived pages are currently accessible, as their Wayback Machine links mysteriously disappeared in December after Mediaite’s initial story on Reid’s homophobic comments about Florida Congressman Charlie Crist was published. The Wayback Machine did not respond to an inquiry regarding the removal of Reid’s blog.

CTV is reporting the alleged murderer in Toronto is a student at Seneca College, New York, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The NY Daily News headlines their piece as:

Deranged man obsessed with mass murderers kills 10, wounds 15 after driving van through Toronto sidewalk

although the only mass killer they specify is Elliot Rodger:

Before the horrific Monday afternoon crash, Minassian had researched and engaged in online discussions about Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old California man who stabbed and shot six people dead near the University of California-Santa Barbara in 2014 before taking his own life, sources told NBC News. Minassian had apparently expressed admiration for Rodger, who claimed rejection by women drove him to his monstrous rampage, according to the sources.

The Arizona Republic now has a story on Lecher Molester Pastor Les Hughey:

he Scottsdale pastor placed on leave after allegations that he sexually abused teenage girls while working at a California church decades ago is now being accused by two women who said they were groped while he was a pastor at Scottsdale Bible Church.

The women came forward with allegations against Les Hughey, founder of Highlands Community Church in north Scottsdale.

In interviews with The Arizona Republic, the women said he sexually assaulted them when he served as a youth pastor at Scottsdale Bible Church in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The women said they believe more women at Scottsdale Bible Church were also abused.

azcentral.com

This is how the story came about. My Aussie friend (former American) Benjamin posted the Modesto Bee story to his Facebook. I saw it early Sunday morning, realized it was a big church in north Scottsdale and went out to protest. In the meantime, Benjamin’s friend Jennifer who lives in Seattle, was out rounding up press to talk to me, including the Arizona Republic. This story wouldn’t have happened as quickly if it hadn’t been for that chain of events.

The next time someone tells you the Internet is bad, tell them it gets stories out that wouldn’t be heard.

I have been severely economically harmed. I have had to terminate contracts with and let go employees as a result of no longer having the means to pay them. This includes letting go of Stephen Chretien, the editor of gotnews.com, Shannon Knutsen, a writer for gotnews.com, and Tyler Bass.

(Not flogging a dead thread, but … )

The news about CCJ’s marital dysfunction and collapse does not deserve more than a mention. Which it has had. We do not need to wallow in the pain of others. That’s what conservative republicans and evangelicals do. We are better than them.

However. The contents of his pathetic answer to Twitter *do* bear some further attention, particularly the passage above.

Is this all hyperbole? Is he trying to wrongheadedly gin up a case for “actual damages”? Or is CCJ’s entire world imploding, as the money dries up and the “hawt Asian wife” bails on him, and he winds up alone and bitter and increasingly desperate to prove … something?

I just watched this video from the previous thread. I found it fascinating. A view into a different and passed world.

It is the world that my father was born into four years later. And I watched with the realization that not one person in that video is around now.

I’m drowning in derp on that Mediaite article. A putative libertarian is arguing with me, and apparently thinks everything “statist” is actually left-wing, including fascism.

Also, punctuation is apparently statist, since he doesn’t use it. (Which makes reading his screeds awfully hard.)

I suspect he is not really a libertarian (or even American). It took zero seconds for my former Libertarian Party wife to respond “right-wing” when I asked her where fascism fell on the political spectrum.

Considering this guy’s arguments, I suspect he is not an American at all. He claims to be a libertarian and can throw around buzz words like “statist,” but doesn’t seem to have the faintest grasp of what libertarianism is.

The first thing a right wing government does, from time immemorial, is to shut down the independent media. Then they create a tame, passive media that is controlled by the State.

The second thing that a modern right wing government does is control its own social media. The third thing it does is to weaponize its own social media to infiltrate and degrade the free movement of facts in other countries. We used to call this spy craft. Now we call it Facebook and Twitter.

The Russians have been very good at this.

Now it can be the case that there are dirty, damaged whores with STDs, but yes, a lot of them are just folks who made a bad decision about their choice of sexual partner.

Nazis did not get that way over a bad decision, they have embraced an inhuman and sadistic ideology in full knowledge of what it is and what it means.

I am late coming to this discussion, but as someone who followed and tried to parody Chuck C Johnson’s lame website for a time, here’s my thoughts on the separation news.

Leave it alone. We have mentioned it here, and unless there is some compelling, newsworthy reason for blogging about it, it’s a personal matter and should be avoided.

OTOH, it seems that Rage Furby’s “media empire” is now only a pile of rubble. WeSearchr seems moribund. His partnership/friendship with Pac Dickinson seems to be history. His lawsuits against Twitter and Gawker have all failed. He may still have communications with people in the White House, but even there he seems marginalized AFAICT. Gus also has dug up some other businesses under Chuck’s name that might be worth checking into. So, writing something about all that stuff would be newsworthy, and a “by the way” mention of his marital difficulties could be legitimately slipped in as pertinent to his downfall. YMMV.

The fall in Chuck’s business empire and public presence has been echoed by the rest of the fringe alt right players like Cernovich, Baked Alaska, Richard Spencer, Milo Y, etc. Even Steve Bannon managed to self immolate. But what’s alarming is that even as their personal fortunes and visibility have waned the hate filled ideology that these assholes championed has only become more mainstream and entrenched in our government institutions and policy. It feels to me like they’ve served out the purpose intended by their more powerful billionaire backers like the Mercers in getting white nationalism to a threshold infection level and that the spectacle these clowns represent, and their inherent psychological instability, is now being viewed as more liability than asset.

Was Chuck paying Twitter? Was there a contract in place? I am curious as to how responsible Twitter is for someone using their free service when they (in this case Chuck) behave badly and do not follow the only contract that I am aware of, and that’s the Terms of Service.

Twitter is a private company, but it is seen by many as a public forum, especially those who blatantly and repeatedly violate its Terms of Service and get sent to Twitter Gulag.

The flip side of that was net Neutrality, which ensured that everyone was guaranteed equal opportunity of access to the Internet. But that is dead now. We are going to see the very nature of how we are informed changed to reflect the interests of the service providers

Friends and classmates described Mr. Minassian as a technical wizard who barely spoke and may have had a social disability. Acquaintances who knew him in high school and at Seneca College, where he recently graduated from a computer studies program, said he had no known religious or political affiliations, and they did not believe he was inclined to violence.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. We’re finally feeling like spring around here, which means everyone will be bitching about allergies and the heat within 48-72 hours.

I get seasonal allergies, and they’re at their worst when the trees are busy doing their tree sex stuff. Then it picks up with the ragweed getting all busy at the end of the summer.

Plant sex sucks (or is it blows in the wind) … just putting it out there.

But I digress.

There are special elections in a couple of states, including NY, where the outcome could end up shifting the State Senate out of GOP hands. That it’s in GOP hands is a lesson in how a splinter group of Demcrats decided that it was better to cast their lot with the minority party so they could circumvent party leaders and gain more power for themselves.

Today, we could see the Democrats gain full control of the State Senate, which is likely to mean that more of Cuomo’s agenda could get adopted sooner.

Meanwhile, the reports about how Pruitt’s lifeline from the WH is dwindling seem to be coming more regularly now.

Trump still backs him, which means that he’s safe for now. The moment that changes, Pruitt is gone - but not before he’s done tremendous damage to the EPA.

It’s also not like Pruitt was alone in destroying functioning government, undermining functioning government programs, and giving companies a green light to rip off consumers/pollute for corporate gain. Zinke and Mnuchin and Mulvaney also are busy doing the same at their respective positions.

Anyone surprised by this?

Shell company tied to the Fox News host bought homes through Jeff Brock, who was charged in 2016 with fraud and conspiracy for his role in a scheme to rig auctions on foreclosed properties

Brock pleaded guilty in 2016 to federal charges of bank fraud and conspiracy for his role in an operation to rig foreclosure auctions between 2007 and 2012. He was sentenced to six months in prison and had to pay more than $166,000 in fines and restitution.

Some of the houses sold on to the Hannity-linked firm in 2012 had been acquired by Brock from banks later named by prosecutors among his victims. But the justice department declined to identify specific properties sold in the rigged auctions. Hannity has not been accused of any wrongdoing and there is no evidence he was aware that Brock was involved in fraud.

US prosecutors said that, during the period in which he was buying the properties, Brock and two co-defendants were running a scheme to rig foreclosure auctions, where people bid to buy homes that have been repossessed by mortgage lenders.

The men agreed not to compete on property sales so one could win the auctions with “artificially low bids”, according to charging documents. The winning bidder would then give payoffs to the others to reward them for not having competed.

Why does this matter in terms of the fraud? Because the homeowners were on the hook for the difference. Had this been a real auction a house they got for $14k could have sold at auction for $40k so the difference would have been the homeowners (the people on the note) responsibility (they have to pay the difference between the sale amount and the mortgage amount). And if it is written off, it is considered income that they have to pay taxes on.

The new place I am moving to next month has some yard. So I might put a feeder up. Or at least consult with the neighbor who already has one up to help with seed supply or set something up that is complementary. I’m sure the felines will enjoy the birdwatching potential as well.

More likely was that Hannity was working with Cohen as a go-between to coordinate talking points or policy and had fuck all to do with real estate. The discussion surrounding real estate was more like “you cannot say that I am a client as people will look into my real estate holdings” since his last discussion with Cohen was just before the hearing to state Cohen’s clients on the record happened and Hannity specifically stated he did not want his name entered into the record (or made public in any way).

Chuck kept talking about his burgeoning media empire when all he had was GotNews and his “oppo research” side jobs. I suppose WeSearchr was supposed to bankroll the expansion. As a business model, it sucked big time.

I saw Weearcher as a money laundering operation, myself…a way to get money from the top without it being shown as money from the top.

Morning!

So, are we reaching the time on the internet where one Chuck C. Johnson has been cut down to size and is being seen as the nothing he really is?

That would be a good thing.

An even better thing would be all the alt-right, men’s rights, white nationalists, Pepe the Frog types running out of gas as America slowly realizes how screwed up it all is. Chucky, Cernovich, Spencer, and others hopefully have met the wall.

Popular takes (fashion) take time to run its course. Let’s hope we are beginning to see the end of it.

Maybe Trump and many of his close associates going down will help it all be seen as the dangerous thinking it was. I hope 2020 puts paid to the whole thing.

The thing we need to learn is that we should not feel compelled to tolerate these “alternative points of view” out of any sense of “inclusion”.

These views are anathema to American values and to humanity in general. People all over have suffered and died from them and others have fought, and bled and sacrificed to combat them.

I finally figured out what professional wrestling is: It’s a TV show starring stunt people.

When I tried to tell my wife this, the conversation went thus:
Me: I figured out what wrestling is.
Her: It’s fake.
Me: So are Soap Operas.
Her: They’re scripted.
Me: So is wrestling.

Most stunt people aren’t very good actors - they tend to be wooden, and don’t deliver lines very well - but they’re good at taking a fall, rolling with a punch, or delivering a blow in such a way that it looks good but does minimal damage (but, like all people, they sometimes fail). If that doesn’t describe all the wrestling I’ve seen over the years, nothing does.

More than that, Trump hasn’t indicated what a “better” deal would look like that the Iranians would accept.

It also ignores that the US isn’t the only party to the Iran deal. He keeps ignoring that there are other nations involved in the negotiations and oversight of Iranian nuclear ambitions.

Oh, and everyone still admits that Iran’s living up to the agreement, and there are those in Iran who think the deal is far too harsh (which signals that the deal is doing precisely what it set out to do).

Other than SoS and Defense, is there anyone in Trump’s Cabinet who would not be appointed to the Cabinet of any modern Republican? Is there any domestic policy that is not a standard Republican policy? The evil being done is not in the name of Trump but in the name of the GOP.

As I write this, it’s still not completely clear if Alek Minassian, the alleged driver of the van that killed ten pedestrians in Toronto yesterday in what appeared to be a very deliberate attack, is in fact a self-identified “involuntary celibate” trying to take revenge against the “Chads” and “Stacies” and other “normies” he blames for ruining his life — or if these reports are simply some sort of 4chan-style hoax.

Maybe it’s because Trump (and/or his malAdministration) isn;t really looking for a “better deal” vis-a-vis Iran, but rather for any sort of passable excuse to marginalize that country as a regional player. Preferably by bombing the shit out of them, but by (loosely defined) “diplomatic” means if military destruction is deemed bad PR.

The Trump Admin has bought in (whole-hog) to the Saudi/Israeli strategy of regarding Iran as the irredeemable Evil Empire: the Designated Villain who can do no right, and cannot be trusted in any way for the least thing without said trust being enforced at gunpoint:
and even then not believed.

That few other nations in the world actually buy into this routine is irrelevant to the Administration: Iran has no well-financed and well-organized lobby in this country: and no friends in the media.

so there seems to be an approach here: taking one aspect of a person’s life (religion, sexual orientation, etc.) and blowing it up to present it as the the sole motivating cause of said person’s crime(s) and then dragging down everyone else who remotely shares or suuports those views

unless that person is a white nationalist gun nut, in which case such person is merely “disturbed”

I may be misreading you here, but Futrelle isn’t simply taking “one aspecte of a person’s life” and blowing it up. Possible predator intervention:

Former Christian school teacher pleads guilty to child grooming charge

A former teacher at Trinity Christian School in Shorewood pleaded guilty on Friday to sending inappropriate text messages to a 13-year-old girl last year.

Lemuel V. Elechicon, 51, of Crest Hill, was sentenced to 180 days in jail.

[…]

Well, glad at least this didn’t turn out bad for the girl.

And that it was a Christian school I don’t think is anything peculiar, as inappropriate behavior can creep in anywhere.

But, in an earlier report on this same story, something caught my eye:

Shorewood teacher facing child grooming charge released on bond

[…]

Barten said investigators interviewed Elechicon on Friday morning. According to the school’s website, Elechicon was a sixth-grade sponsor and middle school teacher who has taught fourth- through eighth-grades. He specialized in teaching “science and biblical creationism,” according to the website.

[…]

And then we wonder why Evangelicals in this country are so diehard Trump supporters.

I guess I did not look closely enough into what Futrelle was writing about.

Misogyny takes a lot of forms, and I suspect you will find also a fair share of it among men who are not celibate.

I was “incel” several times for rather extended stretches, even years. It was not for lack of “compliant” women, it was for lack of women with whom I felt compatible and comfortable enough to be intimate with and vice-versa. I tend to be monogamous and rather selective about the company I keep.

Not that I think I have unrealistic standards or perverted tastes, but I have to find someone with some art or music or poetry in her soul that resonates with me before I can really find her attractive enough to want to pursue a relationship.

It’s easy to call something bad when you have no solutions which really is the story of Trumps career.

Over promise.

Fail to deliver.

Trump business philosophy.

Trump learned all the old school thinking like “sell the sizzle, not the steak.” Except his steaks are always bad. He always failed to deliver on the promise, but it sure sounded good.

This is exactly why he hasn’t been effective as president. A hot mess of emotional policy positions and no actual means of implementation.

He fashions himself as a big idea man, but he can’t work with people that actually bring ideas to reality because he sees them as showing him up. He has to think and do it all himself and that is a great way to make everyone around you useless and they know it.

He is exactly what you don’t want in a leader.

One way in which the ignorant Palin was better than the arrogant, ignorant Trump: There was the amazing scene in the HBO film “Game Change” in which experts were brought in to teach Palin about foreign policy; they had to focus on rudimentary history, but she was there diligently taking notes and paying attention to the lessons. That doesn’t work for Trump — he has no interest in learning about the way the world actually operates or how it got there; he expects everything to conform to his imaginary uneducated views of policy and to change the world to fit his viewpoint.

Convicted Tennessee bus driver sentenced Tuesday to 4 years in prison

Johnthony Walker will spend four years in prison for causing a crash that killed six children and injured dozens of others. Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Don Poole announced the sentence in court Tuesday, after an emotional morning of testimony from parents of the victims and Walker himself.

The hearing began with mother Diamond Brown taking the stand. Her son 6-year-old D’Myunn was killed.

Brown’s testimony had several leaving the courtroom in tears. She said that on the Friday before the crash, her son asked her not to accompany him to the bus stop anymore, saying it was “embarrassing.” She chose not to walk him to the bus stop the next Monday, the day he died.

Brown said she spent a lot of her son’s formative years serving time in federal prison, and regrets that she couldn’t spend more time with him. She also talked about how she wore an ankle monitor as part of her probation, and that when the crash happened, she tearfully called her probation officer to get permission to check on the status of D’Myunn.

She said she was among the first parents on the scene of the crash, and could see children still getting out of the bus.

“Time just kept ticking and I didn’t see him. I gave a description of him and nobody could find him.”
Brown said she never saw her son’s body after the crash, saying she was told his injuries rendered him “unrecognizable.”

An investigation determined that Walker was speeding and talking on his phone at the time of the crash.

I get it now, I was never actively “incel”.

For that, I have never been one to hang out at meat markets to get laid for the sake of getting laid.

And I have never paid a prostitute.

Three reasons for that:

1) I am too tight-fisted
2) I know that the girl herself probably isn’t going to keep most of the money I give her and I not want to be supporting a pimp and
3) I am not interested in having sex with someone who has no interest in me beyond my money.

It does not have to be love & romance, but there has to be some degree of personal affinity between my partner and me.

And I cannot for the life of me imagine forcing myself on a woman who is not actively interested in me.

Full orchestra, full choir, full rock band, plus a Celtic violinist, an operatic tenor and soprano. And Robin Zander from Cheap Trick is their guest vocalist this week (they also had Dee Snider from Twisted Sister and Pat Monahan from Train in for a week each).

This clip (not from last night) is what I think is a pretty brilliant mashup of Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ Brought the house down.

Rocktopia - Rhapsody in Blue/Bohemian Rhapsody

Full disclosure - the guitarist/musical director is an old bud from back in the club days. And if you look at the choir on the left, the first woman on the right (next to the soloist) is my grand-niece - her first real Broadway gig! So proud of her today, she’s living her dream.

Or you don’t, but normal people don’t make not being able to find a mate the central theme of their lives, and hang out on forums dedicated to it. I haven’t dated in a long time, but that doesn’t define who I am, or impact my other interests.

Yeah. Lots of people in the world who aren’t in a relationship, and they could fairly say they have “big jagged holes in their souls” because of their loneliness. But they aren’t consumed by it. They have friends they rely on—-even those of the appropriate sex. And they get on with their lives.

White supremacists have no idea if they should praise or condemn the Toronto attack—because they can’t decide if folks of Caucasian heritage are “white” or not.

I recall a similar bit of disagreement on whether George Zimmerman was “Hispanic” or “Caucasian”.

I doubt it. Trump will agree and then change his mind the next day. Macron wants the US to stay in the Iran deal; do you really think that Trump would agree to that? Or if he does, that the agreement would last more than 24 hours?

re: #340 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

2 doesn’t have to be an issue. There are independent sex-workers.
3 is the reason for me. I don’t even like paying strippers to be nice to me, so even that makes me depressed, and I haven’t been for decades. Sex with a working-girl is not an option.

The wife and I went to see the new Broadway musical ‘Rocktopia’ last night. Interesting show, melding classical music with rock.

I saw Cheap Trick years ago in concert. Zander’s voice was great. Strong and clear. Granted this was 35 years or so ago, but still.

He still sounds pretty great. I was told that he got there yesterday afternoon and did sound check, then did the show with no rehearsal. And the ‘guest’ tunes are ‘Stairway to Heaven’ (which I could have lived without), a beautifully atmospheric ‘Kashmir’ and ‘Dream On’ by Aerosmith.

The encore was a mashup of ‘William Tell Overture’ and ‘Surrender,’ with a couple of choruses of ‘Dream Police’ thrown in.

My grand-niece was enthralled, and my friend the guitar player was thrilled to be playing with one of his idols.

Can’t wait for the spin from Trumpworld claiming the opposite, but it does seem that Trump’s basically killing the Jackson nomination:

To me, this is Trump signaling to Jackson to withdraw his name from consideration. Maybe Trump realizes that Jackson would be questioned under oath about specifics that aren’t covered under doctor-patient privilege/HIPAA and therefore might be very problematic for Trump and Jackson.

Or, Trump just is going to let this die on the vine without acting, hoping it goes away without anyone noticing (we’re noticing).

I don’t remember who said it when Jackson was originally nominated, but it still holds true “Two words: Harriet Miers.” Donny made the nomination purely out of personal loyalty and pure ignorance, Jackson is woefully under-qualified for the job, and the revelations about his past job performance would otherwise sink his nomination outright if not for GOP party loyalty. BUT Donny’s ego won’t allow him to admit a mistake, so he’s now pressuring Jackson to fall on his sword so he can seem “magnanimous” when he withdraws the nomination.

Last night, I went to Barnes and Noble and bought Graham Allison’s Destined for War based on the recommendation of a conservative “friend”. When seeing the book, the check-out clerk immediately started praising Dilbert blog. I mentioned that I was not a fan of Scott Adams but he continued, talking about how only Scott Adams predicted that Trump would win in 2016 and that Trump has shown his brilliance in what he was accomplishing with Kim. It was pretty amazing listening to a Trump fanatic in the wild.

I’m not surprised they believe that “normies” “get all the women”. After all, if you’re outside the norm, that can be quite intimidating to a potential partner. Especially if “outside the norm” means “creepy entitled asshole” like the people in that Salon article mentioned above.

Of course, they go about it the wrong way. As a gay man who came of age In Glasgow Scotland in the late 80s/early 90s, I was definitely outside the norm, but I didn’t let that stop me trying my damnedest. So, at this point in my life, I have a minimum level of sympathy for these “incel” folks. I mean, come on, like nobody else has ever felt lonely or undersexed at some point in their lives? Also, “involuntary celibacy”? Surely the whole point of celibacy is that it’s a conscious choice and therefore voluntary.

(Also, I’m also aware that “normies” is a favoured term of the “alt-right”, so the prospect of getting into bed with an actual flipping Nazi might also be considered a turn-off for a potential partner. In addition to that, i suspect a great deal of these “incels” are less interested in a relationship and more interested in getting their rocks off. Relationships are hard work.)
