The Russia Investigation Heats Up Again: Lawyer Who Promised Dirt on Clinton Turns Out to Be a Kremlin Informant

Politics • Views: 35,460

Every time I start questioning whether there’s really anything to the Russia investigation, something like this comes out: Lawyer Who Was Said to Have Dirt on Clinton Had Closer Ties to Kremlin Than She Let On.

MOSCOW — The Russian lawyer who met with Trump campaign officials in Trump Tower in June 2016 on the premise that she would deliver damaging information about Hillary Clinton has long insisted she is a private attorney, not a Kremlin operative trying to meddle in the presidential election.

But newly released emails show that in at least one instance two years earlier, the lawyer, Natalia V. Veselnitskaya, worked hand in glove with Russia’s chief legal office to thwart a Justice Department civil fraud case against a well-connected Russian firm.

Ms. Veselnitskaya also appears to have recanted her earlier denials of Russian government ties. During an interview to be broadcast Friday by NBC News, she acknowledged that she was not merely a private lawyer but a source of information for a top Kremlin official, Yuri Y. Chaika, the prosecutor general.

“I am a lawyer, and I am an informant,” she said. “Since 2013, I have been actively communicating with the office of the Russian prosecutor general.”

At this point they need to change their tack and explain that Russian are the true American patriots and that anyone who opposes them is a traitor

1. There was no collusion
2. There’s nothing wrong with collusion, not illegal
3. There was no collusion except the Democrats who colluded
4. There was no collusion it was patriotism.

My wife uses a soft-cover phone case that has pockets. Since she keeps her phone and wallet in her purse, if she lost one, she’d lose it all anyway.

Got busy reading the last thread after stepping away and ended up CLing a post. Repeat from downstairs.

Did I read a post earlier that implied it has been proven her blog was not hacked and that the comments in contention were homophobic?

Sounds like she is a bit of a jam. I like her, but I wondered a bit when the “I was hacked” excuse came out. That is so well worn now that it falls flat as an excuse almost from the get-go.

So, I just did a search and there was this: Vox - The Joy Reid controversy, from homophobic blog posts to a hacking claim, explained

The posts, for example, suggested — without much, if any, evidence — that Tom Cruise, Karl Rove, and Chief Justice John Robert’s son are gay. Other posts made derogatory remarks about gay people, claiming that “most straight people cringe at the sight of two men kissing” and that “adult gay men tend to be attracted to very young, post-pubescent types.” One post acknowledged, “Does that make me homophobic? Probably.”

These are different from previous blog posts that Reid apologized for in December 2017. In those past posts, Reid wrote that then-Florida Gov. Charlie Crist was gay, nicknamed him “Miss Charlie,” and claimed that he only married a woman for political purposes. Reid said her comments were “insensitive, tone-deaf and dumb. There is no excusing it — not based on the taste-skewing mores of talk radio or the then-blogosphere, and not based on my intentions.” Crist, who’s now a member of Congress, accepted her apology.

Instead of apologizing for the blog posts that were recently resurfaced, though, Reid has denied that she posted them altogether. In a statement to Mediate, Reid said that the blog posts were the work of hackers and “part of an effort to taint my character with false information by distorting a blog that ended a decade ago.”

There’s reason to be skeptical of the claim. For one, the blog posts were archived by internet crawlers and, in those archives, really dated to the mid-to-late 2000s — a time when Reid wasn’t an MSNBC host or even a widely known national figure, raising questions about why someone would bother hacking her. Some of Reid’s claims have also fallen apart under scrutiny. This has helped elevate the controversy further, as even some of Reid’s supporters have questioned why she didn’t just apologize instead of making assertions that many find literally unbelievable

As with many things in modern American life, this has also been highly politicized. Reid has become a major target of the left due to her criticisms of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) during his bid against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, as well as conservatives due to her criticisms of President Donald Trump. Many of these critics have leveraged the current situation to try to end Reid’s career, while those who agree with her political positions have become some of her biggest defenders.

To understand how we got to this point, though, let’s start with the original blog posts..

…more ugh to the story at link…

Can we just talk about that chyron? State unemployment is at 4.3%, which is a whole 0.2% above the national average. So not sure how that is crippling us.

Homelessness is not new to California. Because of the ideal climate people have moved here since the middle of the 19th century. There used to be tent camps of migrants. Then in the 1920’s and ‘30’s the camps were cheap trailers on wheels. Lots of migrants. Always.

Now there are people living on the streets, but even here in San Diego county, where one can conceivably live fine without any heating or cooling and thus live without a shelter, the homeless in the region around me don’t seem more prevalent than they were 10 years ago. And I walk most places, so unlike people riding in cars I can see what’s going on around me.

Did Joy’s views evolve between then and now? Lordy, I hope so. And if that’s the case, she’s in good company (see, “Johnson, Charles”) and should be praised for that.

But if she’s going to keep playing the “I was hacked!” card instead of acknowledging that she had shitty takes back then and knows better now… well, it makes it harder to keep supporting her, doesn’t it?

It seems higher in LA and Orange County than it has been in the past. And what little research I was recently able to do suggests that it has gone up. But other than “lack of affordable housing” and obviously ideal weather conditions, I’m not sure what’s driving it. Or what the answer is.

When people change their views on something, why not be up front with it? Charles did that and it’s working for him because frankly it’s a lot more interesting to change and talk about it than to avoid an issue.

If Joy really was doing a homophobic gig way back when, it’s easy enough to own up to it. Even Obama “evolved” on gay rights.

I wonder how many poor people have migrated here from other states because they knew they had no hope in thier old state?

Another possible cause - our mental health provisions have not kept up with the population. One of the more damnable things about being parsimonious with health care is that mental health is often at the bottom of the pecking order.

I was going to say something very similar in my post with the Vox article link. I think she should have done anything other than the “I was hacked” which anymore elicits eye rolls.

In a way I think she is too smart to use that.

Rachel Maddow is going to figure into this big time. She could be the one at MSNBC to keep Joy there. Or, not. It’s sad. Joy is a firebrand that is often missing these days on the left side.

Also, I did not realize that some are contending it is far-left Bernie supporters that are really after her.

I’ve been staying out of this because it’s just depressing to see this kind of asinine smearing by the far left of a very eloquent and effective voice — someone we need more than ever right now.

But I think Joy was badly served by the guy she hired to investigate these posts; he came out with a bunch of ludicrous poorly sourced claims, and got instantly called out for them. And it’s being attributed to Joy now, because she accepted his reports.

Apparently the guy was recommended by Malcolm Nance, which is disappointing because the guy is a yahoo who has no idea what he’s talking about. I hope Joy didn’t pay him too much.

But she should have simply owned and apologized for those posts like she did with the original ones that came out. Trying to claim “hacking” made it much worse because unless you have really good evidence for a claim like that you just… shouldn’t. It doesn’t smell right to people.

I hope she’ll take this course now and disavow that “investigation.” I think it’s the only thing that might save her career.

And… saying that, I also think it’s just disgusting the way she’s been targeted by the puritopian left and Glenn Fucking Greenwald.

Well, as has long been pointed out, the “left” includes some element of anarchism and this often leads to “left”-ist groups devouring themselves as they fracture.

Contrast this to fascistic groups, who idolize uniformity and power, and thus make for very powerful blocs who move as one.

Agreed…. but…. the “investigation,” no matter who was doing it, looks shady. It’s her blog. She knows perfectly well whether or not these are things she wrote. If they’re embarrassing to 2018 Joy, that’s understandable. No doubt 2004 Charles (and the posters who were hanging with him here) is embarrassing to 2018 Charles - but 2018 Charles isn’t denying that those were his words or his forum all those years ago, or opening an “investigation” to find out who “placed that stuff in the LGF archives.” He’s owning them and moving on, and we respect him all the more for that.

And… saying that, I also think it’s just disgusting the way she’s been targeted by the puritopian left and Glenn Fucking Greenwald.

I have to disagree on one point, though - I do think it’s possible she simply didn’t recall writing those posts, and didn’t recognize them as her own. She writes a lot, and they were more than 10 years ago. I don’t find it a stretch to think she might have forgotten them.

But now she should own them. I think she’s probably going to do that soon.

That was my thought as well. Didn’t remember them.

I suppose you’re right. I write a lot and occasionally run across something I did that far back that I don’t immediately recall having done, too.

But I don’t deny it was mine, either. I hope you’re right, and that she owns up to it soon. I think there’s plenty of room for forgiveness. And I think after the Melissa Harris Perry debacle a few years back, it would be a very, very bad look for MSNBC to cancel Joy’s show.

Been a while since I had the urge to post something but wanted to give my 2 cents on Joy. I’m a fan of her but this is pretty bad. What I don’t understand is she already apologized for the Gov Crist post why not come clean on all it from the get go. She had to go back and check if anything else of her past writings could come back to haunt her as well, you would think. Many people have evolved on LBGTQ issues so why she felt the need to try to dismiss this instead of owning it is disheartening. As someone else already stated, changing your views should be applauded when those changes are positive. Now I can’t help but ask myself if indeed her views have changed.

I’ve actually made some pretty good friends through Twitter. Just like anything else on the Internet, it can have its good sides and its bad sides. I’ve chosen to use it in a way that minimizes some of the downsides, even if it means I censor what I put on there. Is that necessarily right? No, but it’s the reality we live in and I have the luxury of choice.

Agreed…. but…. the “investigation,” no matter who was doing it, looks shady.

Agreed. I want to defend her. She’s just making it awfully hard to do with what look like a series of increasingly boneheaded choices.

I can’t say for a fact what I wrote 10 years ago. Just sayin’.

Right wing digs up old posts by Joy Reid. Claims she’s a homophobe.

1. Right wing is specifically targeting effective journalists/pundits who expose the right wing as the hateful mob that they are.

2. They’re specifically targeting women of color because they’re the ones who have stood the line against the right wing rabble rousers, white supremacists, and Nazis far more than any other group.

3. That women of color are the bulwark of the Democratic party means that knocking down Reid would be seen as a way to hobble efforts to maintain inertia and enthusiasm in turning the House back to Democratic party control (Senate is far less likely due to the makeup of those up for reelection this year).

4. Reid could have been a homophobe when those were originally written.

5. She could have changed her position over time. She appears to have done so.

6. As Charles pointed out, it appears she’s leaning heavily on a guy who “checked” whether the site was hacked/manipulated, and that his work is not exactly up to snuff.

7. This computer “specialist” may have taken her for a ride, and she doesn’t realize it.

8. The best thing for her to do is to claim that she doesn’t recall writing it, but expound on what her current position is and that she no longer believes what she wrote all those years ago. She should show that she has grown and matured in her views on LGBT rights, and that she’s more tolerant and accepting of the LGBT community, just as the rest of the nation has done in leaps and bounds since just a decade ago even as the right wing/GOP is looking to roll back those same rights.

One of the reasons the right (white) wing mob is trying to roll back all these civil and voting rights for minorities is because they feel like they’re being left behind or watching their power dwindle as others are finally able to express power that these white men have always had at their fingertips.

They’re using this to divide the coalition arrayed against them and hobble an effective speaker/pundit/journalist.

I’m not sure why your bothered. The premise is basically that Americans aren’t churning out enough kids, therefore not enough customers for Toys R Us. The idea that Americans should be popping out babies just to keep Toys R Us in the black is pretty stupid. It may also be wrong headed because if Americans had popped out more kids they might not have the money to spend purchasing overpriced junk from Toys R Us.

I come across specific creations I have written many years ago that I have since forgotten that I wrote.

However, I’ve never come across a position/belief that I had back whenever, that I can’t remember now that I had.

I agree with you in principle. I’m likely guilty of insensitivity in something I wrote somewhere. Was it intentional to a class or group of people like POC, Trans folks, gays, etc.? No (unless the class is moron righties, then yes, those were and are completely intentional).

I’m fairly certain I’ve written something along the way that would piss off religious folks because I have no use for it. I was raised Jewish but don’t much care for that any more than Christianity or any other religion. But that’s core to me and that stance hasn’t really evolved, I’ve pretty much felt that forever or as long as I can remember. That said, leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone. Push your beliefs on me and I’ll become brutal in my words and thoughts.

I’m trying to think of things I’ve changed my stance on (I can’t think of anything because I’ve always been pretty accepting of anyone who’s decent), but maybe I just don’t remember. And I think that is the situation where you have problems like JoyAnn is having. She changed her stance. Perhaps she’s blocking what she wrote or forgot she wrote it. Maybe she really forgot that she indeed felt that way, the mind is funny sometimes.

I don’t know. But I’m not about to throw her away because of what she wrote 10 years ago. It’s not like she raped someone or said someone should be killed for being gay or trans… At least not that I’m aware of.

It’s no coincidence to me they’re going after her because she’s a big critic of Trump and Bernie both. TBH she probably does deserve some criticism for past stances but the people leading it like Greenwald have no credibility at all given their pasts and present.

We do have a workable model on the left that shows these kinds of attacks work.

But, so we’re clear….we’re not accusing of her about being dishonest about stuff she’s reporting on, right? Like, say….interviewing your lawyer w/o disclosing it, interviewing someone who is funneling you money w/o disclosing it, actual journalist ethics stuff.

How does this story compare with say…the thread starter?

I don’t agree with what I wrote. All I am saying in this era of journalism any little sign of misleading and not owning up right off will kill a journalist. Just seems to be a reality in the business.

It’s pretty weird that nobody brought these posts up during the last controversy over the posts about Charlie Crist that she did apologize for. People were crawling all over her old blog then trying to find any hint of homophobia to try to get her fired and these just never came up?

And the rules for building an embassy are quite strict thanks to security considerations.

You need to acquire the space to have the necessary setbacks/security cordons, etc., which aren’t necessary with a consulate or in many existing diplomatic facilities that were built before the current rules. Many existing diplomatic facilities are considered insufficiently secure against vehicle attacks, etc., and therefore moving to more secure facilities is indicated.

re: #49 Charles Johnson

If Joy is claiming she was hacked, is that not admitting that somewhere in the actual text of her blog posts these comments were entered not by her?

If she was claiming the screenshots in the tweets were altered by Photoshop, that wouldn’t be a hack would it?

Don’t mean to split hairs, but there are distinctions and I bet Joy knows the evils of Photoshop.

Also, the posts are off a web site that archives the website…and that hints it is text not image.

From the Vox article linked earlier (Link attached again)

There’s a lot of skepticism around the hacking claim
Not everyone is convinced that Reid was actually hacked. According to Jonathan Nichols, the expert hired by Reid, the hacks took place around 2005 to 2009 — which is why the blog posts were picked up by the Wayback Machine, which archives websites in real time, and tagged during that time period.

Reporter Hayley Miller has a very good breakdown at HuffPost of the reasons to be skeptical of the hacking claim. But here is the key point:

Since Wayback Machine captures sites in real time, this means someone would have had to hack Reid’s blog numerous times between 2005 and 2009. If someone hacked her blog recently and attempted to change the timestamps to a previous year, Wayback Machine would still archive the posts according to the date they were actually hacked.

It’s unclear who would repeatedly target Reid in the mid-to-late-2000s, more than a decade before she rose to national fame with MSNBC. Reid’s Wikipedia page wasn’t even created until 2014.

Occam’s razor still applies here, and it’s much more believable that she said some stupid things on a blog a long time ago, has either forgotten she said them or would prefer not to remember, and is now trying to disavow them. “In the early days of the American Revolution, the Continental Congress approved the role of military chaplains, and it chose Anglican minister Jacob Duché to be its first chaplain in 1774. The founders debated how to pick someone among the different denominations represented, but they ultimately decided that the main question was whether the person supported the American Revolution.”

It’s the same thing that has damaged white families in rural America — and urban America. Automation and off-shoring and increasing concentration of wealth. The great Charles Pierce weighs in.

About a week later, Father Conroy said, he heard from the speaker’s office. “A staffer came down and said, We are upset with this prayer; you are getting too political,” he said. “It suggests to me that there are members who have talked to him about being upset with that prayer.” Shortly after, when he saw Mr. Ryan himself, Father Conroy said that the speaker told him, “Padre, you just got to stay out of politics.”

“That is what I have tried to do for seven years,” Father Conroy said. “It doesn’t sound political to me.” “If you are hospital chaplain, you are going to pray about health,” he added. “If you are a chaplain of Congress, you are going to pray about what Congress is doing.”

In case that deft riposte didn’t clue you in, Fr. Conroy is a Jesuit. Ryan can’t seem to learn the fundamental lesson that you do not fck with The Society. When he was employed as a millstone on the 2012 Republican presidential ticket, Ryan got crossways with the Jesuits at Georgetown, to his hilarious disadvantage. Since then, he’s been running his Concerned Conservative Catholic rap on any sucker who’ll listen, although his primary Scriptural sources still seem to come from the First Epistle of Paul to the Bagmen.

America, 2018, rural Washington state style:

Letter: Globalism vs. Nationalism

Globalists believe that the welfare of mankind is ultimately best served by an educated elite ruling within One World Government in order to avoid major wars and catastrophic events. They support bigger controlling governments to that end, forcing one’s will upon others in that whatever is best for the whole overrides individual rights. They usually support open borders, Democrats, anti Second Amendment, atheism, evolution, situational ethics, and man’s wisdom over God’s.

Nationalists believe that the welfare of mankind is best served by independent nations competing against each other with mutual cooperation of free trade on a level playing field in order to bring out the best in everyone. They believe that the stronger benevolent nations can best keep any rogue nations in check that wish to distribute evil weapons of war and to make war. They are patriotic to their national interests and welfare over other nations. They usually support local and limited government, individual rights, closed borders with legal immigration, Second Amendment, creationism, and trusting in God and his absolute truths that never change.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and as a person’s power increases, usually their sense of morality decreases. Do you support Globalism or Nationalism?

LEE WALTER, WEST RICHLAND

So there you have it, you evolutionist globalists.
