Now can we finally give this a rest and move on?

Most will, but some will never. Y’know, like those flat-earthers and chemtrail believers who watch programs and visit websites that reinforce their bad teachings and idiotic beliefs….

It’s difficult to move on when she never acknowledges having written the posts. She never apologizes for her blog posts because she says she didn’t write them. She admits she wrote and tweeted hurtful things in the past, but not the blog posts. She apologizes for having written things that would make you think she wrote the blog posts she denies writing.

But at no point does she apologize for the blog posts.

4
Mattand  Apr 28, 2018 • 12:44:34pm

I’d buy her apology more if she didn’t go to the “My site was hit by leet haxors” defense that every GOP dirtbag goes to first.

Of course, being a homophobe is a plus for conservatives and Republicans, so it may not be a fair comparison.

(Comment about this topic made in last thread)

I mentioned last evening Rachel Maddow’s support or not will be key to Joy keeping her career at MSNBC.

But she is not out of the woods. There are people that will forgive and others that won’t. And a third group that doesn’t care about the nature of the tweets, they are doing everything they can to see her gone because of her politics and outspoken ways.

I do think she may have made those comments though as it seems to be pretty tough to make changes on archived pages that carry time stamps. But it is remotely possible. When she says I might have but I don’t remember but I have made others that could be seen as being similar it is getting close to saying she did. Just my opinion. I hope she learns from it all. That’s all I can ask from an outsider view.

From Vox:

Other posts made derogatory remarks about gay people, claiming that “most straight people cringe at the sight of two men kissing” and that “adult gay men tend to be attracted to very young, post-pubescent types.” One post acknowledged, “Does that make me homophobic? Probably.”

If you don’t remember writing something like that, it’s more likely you did it so often that it all blurred together than you got hacked.

OT to this thread, sorry. The dscussion of barbershop/Sweet Adelines reminded me of an absolutely stellar modern example, from the sadly broken up and criminally under-rated Bay Area band Jellyfish.

Jellyfish - Hush

Vocally, they’re often compared to the Beach Boys, but Brian Wilson borrowed quite a bit from barbershop (or second hand from the Four Aces) for those legendary Beach Boys harmonies.

This thread popped up literally just as I got home from a day out, shoveled some coal into the DVR and started watching AM Joy.

My position hasn’t changed as a result of watching the first ten minutes (including her opening statement):

I still think the preponderance of the evidence says that the blog posts in question are authentic, and my (very high) opinion of Joy is tempered somewhat by her continuing to claim otherwise. Does she remember having made them? Maybe not, and I don’t want to presume to know exactly what’s going on in her mind.

And having said that, I still think we need her voice in the dialogue. It’s abundantly clear that the Joy who’s on TV in 2018 is not the same person who made those posts, whether it was actually Joy in 2004 or her postulated “hacker” at some later date.

I was furious when MSNBC took Melissa Harris-Perry out of that weekend slot, and I’ll be even madder if they pull Joy off the air for this. But I’m also still more than a little mad at her for sticking to the silly “I was hacked” stuff. If anything, it gives ammunition to the right-wing assholes who are trying to use it to take her down.

People are complicated. People who are paid to take high-profile political stances are especially complicated. If our airwaves were filled only with perfect people, there would be a lot of empty chairs on the news every night.

Dunno if we talked about this, but flying while black and fat.

(click through for the thread)

I’m white and fat and have started flying first class when I can (and can afford it) to avoid the “my you’re LARRRRRGE” looks in coach. And I was thinking this morning how, as a white woman, I have barely an inkling into the black experience in America. This is yet another example.

21
BigPapa  Apr 28, 2018 • 1:16:22pm

Joy needs to suck it up and admit it. I think her ego got the best of her and she needs to get back out in front of it.

I started on this blog in 2007 and have said some things I’d be embarrassed about today. Nothing I couldn’t admit to while acknowledging I changed.

Charles Johnson  Apr 28, 2018 • 1:19:19pm

The Internet Archive is like any other website — it’s vulnerable to hacking. But the evidence provided by Joy’s “cyber security expert” was laughably thin. If you’re going to claim hacking you have to have real solid evidence.

My take is that Joy genuinely didn’t remember some of those posts, asked around for someone who could check it out, then got hooked up with an “expert” who sold her a bill of goods. If she were trying to fool people about this, I don’t think she would have admitted to some of the posts last year when this first came up.

She should have just bitten the bullet and simply apologized for the newly discovered posts (which I saw myself at Internet Archive last year, by the way) and never mentioned hacking at all. She’s no computer expert herself, and probably didn’t realize how sketchy that expert’s evidence was, and how the whole world would start calling it out instantly.

But there’s another factor we shouldn’t ignore here — Joy is being deliberately targeted to destroy her career by elements of the far left, including the Greenwald cultists, because they think she’s not progressive enough for them, because she wasn’t a fan of Bernie Sanders, and because she’s gotten into it publicly more than once with Glenn Fucking Greenwald.

This is a hit job, folks. She handled it well the first time, but this time she stepped into the trap with both feet.

It was 12 years ago, and she writes A LOT. I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch that she might not have remembered them. And keep in mind that in 2006, these kinds of casual gay-bashing comments were totally ordinary, even among left wing bloggers. (There’s an article at The Nation about this very point, with plenty of examples.)

Things have changed more than I think people realize since then.

Yeah, I was just going to say that. If your job is communication, you say an awful lot of things in an awful short time period. Unless you’ve got a perfect memory, you’ll probably wind up forgetting 90% of it.

re: #24 Mattand

It was pervasive, not a one-off time, which is why I don’t buy the excuses for one second. She may have not remembered specific posts, that’s not the problem. We rarely remember what we specifically wrote. The problem is that for an honest person there was zero reason to suggest any form of hacking (not that any hacker capable of doing a flawless job on the Wayback Machine would spend this knowledge to plant a few homophobic posts on a talk show host) since her writing these posts back then was not implausible in the first place. One may not know what one wrote anymore but one knows one’s general state of mind.

re: #25 Charles Johnson

From the Vox article:

These are different from previous blog posts that Reid apologized for in December 2017. In those past posts, Reid wrote that then-Florida Gov. Charlie Crist was gay, nicknamed him “Miss Charlie,” and claimed that he only married a woman for political purposes. Reid said her comments were “insensitive, tone-deaf and dumb. There is no excusing it — not based on the taste-skewing mores of talk radio or the then-blogosphere, and not based on my intentions.” Crist, who’s now a member of Congress, accepted her apology.

This was from five months ago. Five months.

I didn’t know homophobia could lay dormant for a decade and a half and then remerge like a cicada.

I genuinely feel bad about the whole situation, as Reid is obviously a smart woman, and that a similar incident on Fox would result in the person getting a promotion.

But, Jesus Christ, she’s got a problem with gay people.

I’m not misunderstanding anything. There’s plenty to criticize about Crist, but she went right to “Dude’s in the closet and his wife is a beard”.

That’s a pattern.

35
thecommodore  Apr 28, 2018 • 1:36:12pm

While it is strange that the worst posts have zero comments, I am disappointed that she didn’t just own up to all of it. Some of the Twitter comments from LGBT folks are negative, and I don’t blame them, but her supporters seem to outnumber her detractors. So just getting right out in front of this wouldn’t hurt her long term. Plus the claims of being hacked don’t seem to hold much water from what I’ve read (but I have no idea how these things work so I really can’t say).

Joy has been a critical voice in the age of Trump and up until now was a rising star, but she has been damaged by this and only has herself to blame. And that makes me angry, sad, and worried. Because we can’t afford to lose a voice like hers, or have a voice like hers tainted by something like this, especially since it was all avoidable.

There’s a lot of stuff that I and friends in the music world said 15 years ago that I’d never even think of saying now, and if someone quoted me on some of the things I said back then, I’d likely die of embarrassment.

A lot has changed in this century. I’m not a whole lot smarter now than I was then, but I am a lot more aware of how fucked up I and a lot of people I know in the music biz used to be.

You may not remember your actual posts and how they were written.

But surely you remember how you felt about the issue all of your life.

And if you remember how you generally felt and how you probably talked about it all at that time in your life, then you pretty much know if you wrote something like that or not.

It is not writing about something unfamiliar that is easy to forget. You know yourself unless you have some kind of traumatic experience that wipes your past thoughts and feelings from your mind.

Look, I’m a little antsy on this because I am in the graphics industry and have worked side-by-side with gay people for decades now. I really am not trying to come off like I’m sort of white knight for the gay community. That said, I have family and friends who still look at them like monstrous freaks.

I know people in the graphics industry who despite working with gay people, would be happy to see them legally discriminated against.

The woman who is basically my sister-in-law is gay, and my mother-in-law will go to her grave never forgiving her for her “sin”.

Reid has an obvious problem with gay people if she’s writing homophobic shit and then denying she did it. There’s a pattern here. I’m sorry if this is pissing everyone off, but that’s a fucking deal breaker for me, regardless of whether she’s on my side politically or not.

I’m not saying she shouldn’t be criticized for the remarks or how she’s handled the controversy but Greenwald who has been silent as a church mouse about homophobia in Putin’s Russia and his adopted Brazil is a fraud.

So, after posting that thoroughly repulsive thing from some incel*, I did, as I promised, take Rango for a walk. Poor bastard got shortchanged yesterday because instead of taking him for a walk, I was driving an adrenaline-fueled Mrs. FBW hither and yon preparing for a fundraiser for the afterschool tutoring organization where she works/volunteers.

It’s cloudy today, so it was relatively cool. But, after finding a tick on Rango the other day after walking the narrow trails up Sugarloaf Mountain, I decided to stick with wide trails and streets. But we still walked to the dam, where I took these three shots, all from the same place:

1) Looking up the canyon from the north side of the dam. Not sure what the structure is, but I suspect it’s something like the holes in your bathroom sink near the top that keep it from overflowing.

2) Looking across the top of the dam at the hills opposite.

3) Looking down the trail we’re about to take back to civilization…

And here’s Rango, tired but happy…

*Honestly, if that’s how they see women, and how men and women should interact, I’m surprised they have any friends of any variety. What a loathsome outlook on life!

And that is EXACTLY what she acknowledged in her statement and apologized for.

I suppose she should have just slunk off into the mists of the former-somebodies and joined the growing ranks of the eternally shamed not-GOP, never to write another word or speak another public word ever again.

I wrote the other day about how I was accumulating the parts to put together a nice watch, which when finished would be completely authentic, but not original, and how I realized that I was buying all the parts from a couple people whose business model is to take a complete watch and sell off the case, the movement, the hands, and the dial separately.

Well, I have finished putting it back together. Completely authentic - every piece is appropriate for a Hamilton 992b as was sold in 1943, when the movement was made - and yet all sourced from different watches.

I told you it would be pretty when I finished, didn’t I? And I was right, wasn’t I?

One thing I observed while working on it is that, honestly, it’s a higher quality piece than the competing Elgin of the same time period. Hamilton was like Lincoln, compared to Elgin’s Chevrolet.

The Bros believe with all their heads that the SDs “unfairly” tilted the results of the primaries by endorsing Hillary. That if it hadn’t looked like the party was in the tank for her, then more people would have been willing to give Bernie a chance and he might have won more primaries as a result.

I would have been much happier living my whole life without learning about these “incel” losers.

This article offers excellent analysis and takedown of these evil creeps, and the fact it’s written by a man who, for lack of better words, “looks the part” of an alpha should give it credence among clueless, privileged types inclined to dismiss the same arguments from a woman:

The involuntary celibate “incel” community is akin to a diabolical social experiment that took everything toxic about male attitudes towards women, set it aflame to boil off any remnant of rationality, locked it inside a nuclear reactor to force a horrific mutation, then gave it a bunch of hate porn to watch.

They see any effort at self-improvement as both futile and accepting of the “system” where women control all sexual encounters and reproduction. For them, women are not sentient human beings, but rather objects for their pleasure who have denied them such. And so, they are deserving only of hatred, rape, even death.

re: #23 Charles Johnson

My take is that Joy genuinely didn’t remember some of those posts, asked around for someone who could check it out, then got hooked up with an “expert” who sold her a bill of goods. If she were trying to fool people about this, I don’t think she would have admitted to some of the posts last year when this first came up.

This is what I think. She saw the stuff and said I don’t remember that! Maybe I was hacked! And then the “expert” confirmed the idea.

I entirely believe she has no memory of things she said and doesn’t really believe she said them, Most people have a highly inflated opinion of their own memory which is completely wrong.

Here’s an example: many years ago when I got married and didn’t change my name, my dad said that someday women would give up this nonsense of insisting on not changing their names. I told him I thought he would be happier about it since it is HIS name.

Fewer years ago, my dad married his current wife - who didn’t change her name. I said it’s a good thing you changed your mind about women not changing their names, huh? And he not only had no memory of ever saying that, he denied he ever felt that way or ever would have said it.

Of course I could be the one who is remembering wrong - but that doesn’t change my central point - people have terrible memories and don’t even know it.

oh lookie…she’s a berner…
medium.com

The user @Jamie_Maz who in November went through Joy’s old blog posts through the so called WayBack machine never mentioned other blog posts, never mentioned there was more ‘homophobic’ content.

Now let me be absolutely clear: I do not have any evidence whether or not Joy Ann Reid’s recently surfaced blog posts were altered, added or whether or not they are genuine. That is also not the subject of this article: the subject is the excessive campaign to get Joy Ann Reid fired by the Bernie left.

I saw the same user @Jamie_Maz post the recently ‘found’ blog posts and at first this just led to great enthusiasm among the Bernie crowd on Twitter. The idea that they found something damaging on Joy Ann Reid was absolutely fantastic to this crowd of Bernie supporters: #FireJoyReid!

Let’s be absolutely clear: this campaign isn’t coming from trump supporters, or breitbart or right wing racists, this is coming from the racist Bernie left.

Although I have no evidence one way or the other it would NOT surprise me at all when in the end we find out this Bernie crowd altered the screenshots, because let’s face it: a crowd who contacts people’s employers with anonymous letters (as in the case of Humorless Kev), who starts internet campaigns to get people fired and posts racist pictures would be very willing to do this.

Also, ethics. I mean, I know that there are people making money out of these self-radicalized hate groups (of which incels are just one), as well as getting their power “fix” from floating to the surface in the cesspool. All those people do is to aggravating a toxicity which is already violent and homicidal.
I’ve noticed this trait of many “radical” groups and the people who pander to them, that you merely have to scratch the surface to notice that it is someone’s moneymaking machine or local tower of power.

re: #124 Charmingly Persistent

I am reminded of Robert Frost’s poem, “The Road Not Taken”. Everyone remembers the last three lines and believes the poem to be about plotting your own course in life:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

If you read the whole poem, Frost is saying that the two paths were nearly identical, and choosing one over the other was more a whim than a moment of decision. But years hence you will remember it differently, that rather than dithering and eventually basically flipping a coin, instead you made a courageous choice and it was the making of you.

Regarding the plasticity of memories, I’ve mentioned before reciting the ‘All The Things You Can Make With Shrimp’ list that Bubba goes through in Forrest Gump - “Bahled shreeump. Frahed Shreeump. Shreeump Dah-ann…” I always said, “Shreeump Etouffee”, and I clearly remember him saying it.

He never said it.

But I still remember him saying it. That’s one reason when Mrs. FBW says I said or did something I don’t remember saying or doing, I no longer said, “I never said/did that!” Instead, I say, “I really don’t remember saying/doing that!”

I went downstairs earlier to print something for Mrs. Fish. I looked around for my feline overlords, but didn’t have to look far - they were both firmly ensconced on one of the recliners, giving me that, “What? The internet is transformative, for sure, but I personally think the only thing the internet contributed to “incel” is that these guys got together and came up with a team name. There were assaults and rapes before the internet.

How about the flip side? I think it would have been much harder to bring down Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby without the internet, because it would have been harder for these women to go “Hey, that’s what my story sounds like.”

I think a lot of how bad things like the Trumpkins, white supremacists (but I repeat myself), conspiracy theorists (but I…aw, fuck it), MRAs have gotten, both in number and intensity of hate and craziness, is because they can find each other and work like feed forward activation.

Much like Trump, I think the appeal of Russia to Bernie is the authoritarian regime that Putin maintains to keep himself in power. Both men love the idea of a system where they can simply exert their will and make things happen. That their opponents can be silenced through “investigations” or less…reputable means is a bonus.

The big myth about the 2016 presidential election was that economic suffering drove most of Donald Trump’s “base” directly into his hands in states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

To be my fair, my mom bought it. I think she just didn’t want to see that it was bigotry that drove so many Trumpers. She hates Trump of course but it’s nice to finally see the economic anxiety bs called outt by CNN.

Anybody remember when Donny promised he was gonna get Boeing to come in cheaper on the replacements for Air Force One?

And then we found out a year later that they’re actually going to be even more expensive than the estimate at the time he promised to force them to come down on?

Good times.

Or how about all those jobs he saved at Carrier, only for them to wind up outsourcing them all last year?

And right now, 61% of the United States, along with much of the free world, is in that latter category.

I really need to catch up before October. I admit I stopped watching after Capaldi’s first season because the whole Doctor/Clara dynamic had become rather toxic in my eyes. I understand it got better in his second season, but it’s still hard for me to stomach the whole thing.

re: #199 HappyWarrior “I think for many white liberals we just couldn’t accept that social anxiety was the real driving force behind Trumpism because we didn’t want to see the worst from those we know.”

I guess I never bought the “they voted for Trump because of economic anxiety” BS because as a black female who survived America’s Jim Crow Era, I know that racism and bigotry are still very much alive and thriving in America. My life experience has provided me with a different perspective when it comes to viewing and dealing with racism, bigotry, religious differences, and economic and social culture issues. In a way, I am the manifestation of the American Dream that some others in this country are working to suppress, oppress, and destroy because of their fear of being “replaced and dominated.” What these persons don’t seem to understand is that in general, POC, those who practice religions other than Christianity, and LGBTQ Americans don’t want to suppress, oppress, destroy, replace or dominate them, and we don’t hate them. We only want to be viewed as their equals and allowed to exercise our constitutional rights the same way that they do. That I have had a successful life in spite of facing many adversities says to me that those who have sought to “keep me in my place” have failed. I, and many others, including LGBTQ Americans, other POC, and religious groups not comprised of Christians, are using the system as it was designed to make better lives for ourselves and our families and shall continue to do so. Even though they seem to think they can, they can’t stop progress or demographic change from happening forever, and I think they will eventually be forced to acknowledge that they will become the minority in America and every negative aspect of those changes that they are predicting most likely won’t happen. Why not? Because those they’re bent on keeping in subjugation aren’t the assholes that they are. I’ve mentioned before here at LGF that the main reason I will never attempt to deprive any other person or group in this country of their civil rights is because I know exactly what it is like to live that way, and I adamantly refuse to treat a fellow citizen or human being the way I have been, and am sometimes still, treated.

I feel Capaldi’s three seasons suffer not only because he sort of got stuck with Smith’s hand-me-downs, but also because it became obvious by the third season that Moffat was just totally tapped for ideas. I hope that the change in the captain’s chair brings some new life to the whole mess, but I’m gonna temper that hope with the reality that the BBC is generally hesitant to embrace change.

When is he going to turn these Trump rallies into sitting high in a golden chair on red carpeted stage and have people come up to a podium in front of him and praise him as the god he is?

With a large TV screen above it all so people can see him fake smile as he listens to the fawning. Of course a huge PA system. People must hear.

And then he waves them off with a flick of his infant hand to have the next Trumpian come up and blow their horn in praise.

That makes no sense especially because we can see that you fondle Vlad.

But he did just admit that Don Jr. met with the Russian Lawyer.

We can quibble over who set it up as we talk to others now that we know the meeting is true.

Do alienating our allies, having ICE go after brown people regardless of citizenship status, cozying up to a hostile foreign power, potentially threatening nuclear war, and dismantling any semblence of a functioning government count as accomplishments?

And that is EXACTLY what she acknowledged in her statement and apologized for.

I suppose she should have just slunk off into the mists of the former-somebodies and joined the growing ranks of the eternally shamed not-GOP, never to write another word or speak another public word ever again.
OTOH, even that probably wouldn’t satisfy the yammering “NOT GOOD ENOUGH” crowd.

They are attacking her for being a Negro who is very good at her job.

Hmm…that reminds me of someone else…

By the way, the gig in Houston last night was outstanding. And tomorrow we’re playing at Zach Scott (the big space) in Austin. It really is a good show.

The Hobby Center’s big theater (2600 seats)was next door to ours and is selling tickets on average for $400 for Hamilton. It’s there for four weeks and opened last Tuesday. Top seats are selling for $695 a pop. Do the math. It’s silly successful.

(Edited at the top for idiocy.)

I’ll call bullshit. Ryan is as close to an Opus Dei Catholic as you can get without flaying your skin with barbed wire. Osteen is a hack Prosperity Gospel preacher, which is as far from mainline Catholic Catechism as you can get.

I’m sorry but Trump’s comments on community colleges infuriate the shit out of me. Because of CC, I was better equipped at 21 than I was 18 to enter a four year school. Trumps cult can cheer that on all they want, they’re just fucking themselves as always and you know what, I don’t care. They vote repeatedly for politicians like this and then they cry about liberals.

No reason to be sorry.
