Video: Michelle Wolf’s Complete Performance at the 2018 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Humor • Views: 53,300

YouTube

In some kind of weird ritualistic dominance competition, President Racist Grandpa has been repetitively ranting away at another of his pointless Hitler-esque rallies in Michigan where there are lots of yahoos who love him while the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner happens in Washington DC where Trump allegedly works when he isn’t golfing or having affairs with Playboy models. Featuring comedian Michelle Wolf, who is funny. Please enjoy!

The NRA convention has ALWAYS been a gun-free zone (except for the presumably unloaded display models waved around on-stage). Every year.

They needed a secret service protectee to show up so they wouldn’t have to endure jokes about why no guns.

Yeah, I got my heart broken from time to time. Didn’t marry ‘til my mid-thirties (needed to work on my OWN shit first, I was terribly controlling- codependent) and have been very happily married to She Who Must Be Obeyed for twenty three years.

Somehow, the pain of rejection didn’t make me rape women I stalked, murder newlyweds, or torture people.

Go Figure!

I cannot say I ever remember wingnuts arguing after 2010 or 2014 that “We need to stop making fun of them and understand their motivations.”

Every time, it was the same tune: “You lost, you backed the wrong horse, now get on the bandwagon before it runs your ass over.”

I was just reminiscing about the time Stephen Colbert put the White House Correspondents dinner on the map. I was kind of bored and channel surfing and CSPAN caught my eye with a little graphic about Stephen Colbert speaking, and I immediately thought 1. whoever booked him did not think about what was about to happen, and 2, shit was about to happen. Colbert gave a performance that should be in the Smithsonian. That mock audition video cut on two different levels. It cut at the correspondents who didn’t pursue the truth and it cut President Bush by saying he could run from the truth but he could not hide. I was really happy to have seen it as it happened. I made sure to watch the Daily Show - Colbert Report crossover on Monday and John Stewart just said we have never been so proud and the audience was nuts.

Overall, I thought she kicked ass. There were several jokes that were dicey, but the Southwest joke was unfair. I had an engine actually explode and shear off the wing my plane on the runway once. Shit happens. Technology is not perfect.

Granted, it was an old J-57, historically unreliable, especially in the early versions (I had two in-flight failures of them for blown seals). But it just disintregated and fell off the wing. Thank fate it didn’t throw enough shrapnel into the wing to ignite the wing tanks on that side of the airplane, but it caused my sphincter to pucker to the point that my seat cushion had to be surgically removed. It was REALLY loud.

When I was flying planes in the Air Force, we worried a lot about the engines, because they failed quite often, as organization. We would routinely run engine tests during cruise phase, running up an individual engine to max thrust (lowering a couple of others, of course) to see if it exhibited any kind of excursion from its standard operating norms.

Back in the day, this was really the only way we could see if an engine was exhibiting any interest in blowing itself apart. The technology that is used for modern testing fan blade didn’t exist then, and the engine blades weren’t made like they are now. They are somuch better now that I can’t even begin to tell you.

Peggy Noonan will be on to say this wouldn’t have happened back under Reagan, and then she will faint.

Daniella Pletka will be on to turn up her nose at the folly of it all. And remind conservatives to stay the course.

Rick Santorum will be on to say it’s all due to abortion and higher education elites looking down on Conservatives.

Get a load of this shit. Some idiot, right at the end of the movie, stands up in the dark and starts going all preachy:

Armed officers rushed to the Harkins Mountain Grove 16 theaters in Redlands, where people had just finished watching the latest installment of the “Avengers” franchise, fearing there might a gunman inside. Witnesses said when the movie was over, a man stood up and started yelling in what sounded like a preacher’s sermon.

“I think when he said, ‘If you were to die tonight, would your passage to heaven be guaranteed?’ — something along those lines — I think that’s when people started panicking,” Susie Arias told CBS2 News.

..

“That’s when the kind of chaos happened in the little exit, where people were jumping over the railings, and kind of falling over, twisting their ankles and hitting their head,” recalled Adrian Arias.

In footage taken immediately after the incident, a man can be seen limping out of the theater. Police said a woman hit her head and had to be hospitalized.

In this day and age, some guy stands up and starts sounding like a nut, people think they’re going to die.

Massachusetts GOP governor Charlie Baker got the endorsement of the party, but it wasn’t by a large enough percentage, so he will be facing THIS ASSHAT for the nomination:

His only rival, Scott Lively, a fringe candidate with hardly any staff or fund-raising, managed to win 27.7 percent of support from delegates, easily clearing the 15 percent threshold of delegate support to qualify for the primary ballot.

Lively is best known for two things:

2) The “kill the gays” bill in Uganda.

Now Baker, who is a very popular governor in Massachusetts, has to spend time fending off the right wing nutjobs. Personally, I think it’s time for these people to get out of the Republican party.

I have no quarrels with Ms. Reid. Though I don’t consume cable news I think she should stay where she is. I noticed a fair pushback downstairs about the blog stuff. I don’t care about what she might or might not have wrote in the mid aughts, what she’s doing now is valuable.

She already said she was snarky when she “wrote” those columns. At the same time period that Obama was against same sex marriage. He evolved. But now shes being crucified about something that happened over 10 years ago. Our side and the owner of this blog is not doing enough to defend her. And thats why we lose.

Massachusetts GOP governor Charlie Baker got the endorsement of the party, but it wasn’t by a large enough percentage, so he will be facing THIS ASSHAT for the nomination:

bostonglobe.com

Lively is best known for two things:

1) A scurrilous piece of garbage called “The Pink Swastika,” which alleges “homosexuality in the Nazi Party contributed to extreme militarism in Nazi Germany.”
en.wikipedia.org

2) The “kill the gays” bill in Uganda.
en.wikipedia.org

In other words, he’s a horrible, horrible person.

Now Baker, who is a very popular governor in Massachusetts, has to spend time fending off the right wing nutjobs. Personally, I think it’s time for these people to get out of the Republican party.

Scott Lively was also actively involved in various anti-gay ballot measures back in the 1980s up in Oregon - he was working with a fellow called Lon Mabon, who headed the (IIRC, now defunct) Oregon Citizens Alliance.

Lively has been up to this crap for a long, long time, three decades at least of peddling his tedious, anti-LGBT bullshit.

A lot of scrunity for a 33 year old woman who isn’t an office holder.

Indeed - and Joy Reid is being attacked 24-7 - a political pundit, who said maybe something 10 years ago, that a large % of the GOP would agree with.

Something wrong with a media that accepts a president who calls out his political opponents on twitter, with much abuse - yet demands everyone accept “this is who he is”.

Press secretary lies 24x7 - and the media says she should not be attacked for same. Where was this media when President Obama was attacked for wearing a brown suit, eating mustard & suggesting arresting someone for entering their own home was stupid.

Anachronism! “Nova” and “Nova SS” were still just trim levels of the Chevy II in 1963. They didn’t drop the name “Chevy II” and promote “Nova” to the model name until 196…8, I think. Maybe ‘69.

What to Wear: A Style Guideline for Tajik Women (goes to Radio Free Europe)

Tajikistan just came out with a 367-page government issued book telling women how they should dress and appear in all situations of Tajik life.

Tajikistan has an extremely conservative government, and just like conservatives everywhere throughout time, women are told what to do and when to do it.

Both miniskirts and maxi dresses are out, according to the recommendations, which state that hemlines should fall a good 15-20 centimeters below the knee, but also at most 20 centimeters above the ankle.

Sleeves must not be shorter than 10 centimeters, and necklines must not drop more than 15 centimeters in front, and 5 centimeters in the back.

Flat shoes are unacceptable, including the cheap and popular felt loafers known as Irinka shoes. And flip-flops and galoshes definitely out; they have been deemed health hazards, for unstated reasons. It is unclear whether women are supposed to always wear heels in Tajikistan, 93 percent of which is covered by mountains.

A colorful head scarf or kerchief is an option, but it “has to be tied behind the head in the national Tajik style” and it should not cover the face and neck. Black head scarves are banned entirely, even for funerals.

I know what people think of the NFL, but I do think this is a pretty cool story:

Shaquem Griffin reunites with brother in Seattle, becomes first one-handed player selected in NFL draft

When the most important call in his life came Saturday afternoon, Shaquem Griffin said he was using the restroom.

“My brother ran to the restroom and tackled me,” Shaquem recalled. “He’s like, ‘You gotta answer this phone. I know this area code.’

And with that, Shaquem Griffin, one of the most inspiring players in the country during the past two seasons at UCF, became the first one-handed player to be selected in the NFL draft.

Shaquem had his left hand was amputated when he was 4 years old after developing painful nerve complications due to a rare pre-birth condition called Amniotic Band Syndrome. Strands of the amniotic sac separate and entangle parts of the fetus. The sac cut off circulation to Shaquem’s left hand before he was born.

He dealt with intense pain during the first few years of his life. When Tangie found him in the kitchen with a knife attempting to cut off his own hand, she had seen enough. The amputation procedure took place the next day.

Griffin was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 after racking up 92 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks.

The electricity just went off here at the Conspiracy Compound. I have no idea why and the yokel power monopoly has no information, though they did take my report. My computer went nuts when it came back on after the generator kicked in. The date and time reverted to 12:01 AM January 1st, 2007. It wouldn’t reload any websites until I reset it to the present. This means that the system backup battery has died and I will have to perform amateur ‘puter surgery to replace it.

It’s Interactive Trader, one of those options trading courses that ropes people in with a $997 three-day workshop then tries to upsell them into the $20K “experts” course. Pitching the courses is one of the requirements of anyone who buys into it. It reeks of scam, and I am not surprised TooMany Leggings is their celebrity spokes-shill.

Hey, where’d that tree go? There was a tree here the other day…

Pictures taken by a Reuters photographer appeared to show that a tree planted at the White House this week by Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron has vanished.

The tree, an oak sapling from the site of a pivotal first world war battle involving the US marines, was a gift presented by the French president as part of his state visit to Washington.

In a tweet, Macron said: “100 years ago, American soldiers fought in France, in Belleau to defend our freedom. This oak tree (my gift to [Donald Trump]) will be a reminder at the White House of these ties that bind us.”

Macron and Trump planted it on Monday, using golden shovels and with wives Brigitte Macron and Melania Trump looking on.

The planting ceremony prompted speculation on social media, particularly about whether the French president had been “trolling” Trump over his environmental policies and withdrawal from the Paris climate accord.

Yes, in the 60s if you put 30 years in the steel mill you would get 13 weeks paid vacation and you had adequate life and health insurance. Your spouse didn’t have to work.

Then Nixon backer I.W. Abel gave away the union’s right to strike in their 1973 contract and it’s been downhill for the steel industry ever since. Bethlehem Steel took away the pensions for the steel workers I want to say in the early 2000’s. My great uncle had died in 1996 after years of working there. It definitely contributed to his death. Everytime someone whines about the government being too cruel, it’s just as easy to find that in private enterprise.

Boring, mundane celebrity encounters:

When I was eight years old, I was with my parents at Standard Brands (a paint store in the Los Angeles area); my dad was picking something up for around the house.

I was looking at a mirror that had a Fokker triplane (the Red Baron’s plane) and when I turned around to find my parents, I accidentally bumped into Harrison Ford.

I looked up at him and said, “I’m sorry. Hey….you’re Han Solo”.

He chuckled about it and I went off to find my parents. Shoulda got his autograph.

I used the urinal next to Paul Newman at an off Broadway production of Three Woman.

Almost everyone in the party is running to kiss Trump ass and saying things that amount to how Trump are you. I’ve never ever seen Republicans attack each other at the level. It is outright warfare.

I described to her what I call FB’s Self-Radicalizing Algorithm, where liking, or even clicking on a political post leads FB to feed you more and more extreme stuff, or how Crazy Wingnut Uncle Frank gets turned into Colonel Frank of the Eagle Patriot 3 Percenter Militia.

She told me that once she had wanted to post about those rolling baby walkers people used to put babies in before they could walk, till too many babies rolled them down the steps or into dangerous stuff. She was trying to remember what they were called, so she googled them.

Next thing you know, her FB ads are full of baby stuff. She figured it was because of googling the walkers.

The basic rule applies: it’s not conservatism, or even principles, that unite this coalition; it’s bad faith in the service of selfish ends.

And what we’re seeing with the fucking press flacks is an extension of this: they want access and they want cheap thinkpiecce aestheticism, and being “offended” by a comedian feeds both needs. They’re not reporters, they’re trying to build an audience by finding a catchy take. The semblance of ethics, without the actual fucking hard work of consistency and/or casuistry, by taking performative offense in a manner that it’s anticipated to generate attention.

It’s the David Brooks model: why actually think when you can just retreat to the same set of comfortable tropes that you know your audience wants to be fed?

One of my favorite lines from last night was this one:

Mike Pence is the kind of guy that brushes his teeth and then drinks orange juice and thinks, “Mmm.”

I know, not caustic or “firebrandy” but it did make me laugh.

That’s Pence’s drug of choice. Gives him that little rush without being a bad boy in the eyes of mother or God.

Ah and the Karmic blowbacks keep on coming for Little Richard Spencer!

Richard Spencer is begging for money to hire an attorney as his legal and financial woes continue to grow.

Spencer is asking for $25,000 to defend himself in a federal lawsuit over the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Right Wing Watch reported.

“I am under attack and I need your help,” Spencer said in a public appeal. “Some of the biggest and baddest law firms in the United States are suing me, along with some other prominent figures, in civil court.”

Spencer recently had a falling out with his longtime lawyer, Kyle Bristow.

F you, Spencer. Take your hate and stick it up your ass!

The Ghost of a Flea  Apr 29, 2018 • 10:28:20am

Basically, we have pundits who treat reality as text.

What happened
matters less than the story of what happened, and the latter implicitly includes a calculation of who the audience is. So the story of what happened immediately becomes a narrative, structured towards a conclusion, constructed to be performed with viewers in mind.

We can see a shared textual tradition—tropes and just-so stories that overwrite the specifics of any given events—in the Beltway media. They construct stories within a narrative frame, and the result is the homologous “takes” that drop at the same time. It’s Procrustean—fitting the guest to the bed—which is why the beats are always the same. The text structure—“all sides are equally bad,” etc—dictates the story, not the events that happened. We can see this with the “read” of the relative significance of rudeness by a comedian and a roast-event versus the consistent rudeness of an entire administration, including a POTUS at a campaign event mocking his opponents.

…and they’re doing it because they’re people who’ve been told they’re smart because they’re articulate when writing and speaking. They’re performing intellectualism, which isn’t the same as doing the fucking rigorous work that is actual analysis. And the sad thing is, some of them are capable of doing the work, but it’s more profitable and easier to pander. And they’re pandering to the people with the most capital.

Hence the constant shallow aesthetic assessment and the appeal to a false mean: that’s the only depth at which you can work and not generate critique that would bother the powerful people (even the liberal ones) that could get you an op-ed column, or a TV spot.

Basically, they’re treating reality as a product, and marketing it to a specific audience.

I used to think of it as a distillation process, where the product becomes more and more pure hate.

But then I realized I was looking at the distillation process wrong. The hate isn’t the distillate. The hate is the boiling mixture, and anything that can escape does, while that which remains becomes is increasingly devoid of any desirable qualities, eventually becoming nothing but a gooey, tarry residue of the worst imaginable properties.

And all the people who stared blankly into the abyss as the now-president demonized immigrants, and non-Christians, and the last president, and his political opponents, and federal investigators, and the press, and the rule of law itself, on any occasion in which it caused him the slightest injury, and all the people who stare blankly at the Sean Spicers and Sarah Sanderses of the White House and wrote down, dutifully and punctually, the flagrant lies that the White House wanted disseminated on that particular day, pretended that this was the one incident of impropriety that shook them. Onward, Christian soldiers: Right-wing religious nationalists launch dramatic new power play
Evangelical extremists mount “Project Blitz,” a covert campaign to re-create a Christian America that never existed

salon.com

It’s worth a read because it shows how far the Christian nationalists will go, all the way to flat out lying to get their way. They’re being led in their lies by David Barton, who wouldn’t know the truth if a 2x4 hit him over the head. And when John Fea, a scholar of the whole notion of the so-called “Christian” foundation of the US (which he says is not true), says there’s a serious issue, then there’s a serious issue.

Well, the meter flashed three times and shut off. When I turned it back on again it flashed three times and shut off.

That is when I realized it was some kind of error code. I went to the manual and there it was.

If unit flashes the red light three times and turns-off it is an indication no need for further metering. It went on to state causes of this. One was too much self indulgence in jokes made more to impress the comic than to be funny.

I laughed. Haven’t used it since. Had just bought it too. But, it did its job.
