Well one thing is for damn certain. Michelle Fox had one powerful and clear mirror she held up last night.

And a lot of people in and around DC are all upset because they didn’t like what they saw.

No, really, believe all of the American people that are just plain at wits end trying to figure out when this madness will be righted.

That’s you.

Given Keratingate last week and now SmokeyEyeGate, I think the media is trying to drive up their unfavorables with the left as high as they are with the right. Apparently, they will only be happy if a majority of Democrats as well as Republicans consider them enemies of the nation so they can both sides it comfortably.

Not according to this Quinnipiac Poll.

Apparently 51% of Republicans compared to 3% of Democrats believe that “enemy of the people” more closely describes the media than “part of democracy”.

The KKK just took out a full page ad on the front page a Virginia newspaper…

I know that is getting passed around a lot on twitter, but as phrased that sentence is misleading, is it not?

I thought the real story is such: a local KKK circulated a flier in a town. Then, a newspaper not far away decided to run a (not positive) story on it, and reproduced the flier in the article. Then, readers started to point out that by reproducing said flier that said newspaper was in essence running an advert for the KKK. Which brought about a mea culpa from the newspaper.

To think, it all started with a roll of the dice by Marvel Studios and Paramount on Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man just ten years ago to kickstart the MCU.

IMO, if someone else like Tom Cruise or another action-oriented actor had played Stark/IM in that first movie, I don’t think the MCU (and, by extension, Marvel Studios and Disney) would have been anywhere near as successful; Downey is Stark.

For a complete change of pace for your Sunday afternoon enjoyment…

Klys talking about her sister’s Sweet Adeline competition got me to remembering the best barbershop quartet I ever heard (out of so many I couldn’t count) who performed at one of the Tidelander’s shows. These guys were astonishingly talented and funny as hell. Their coolest gimmick, for lack of a better word, was putting words to classical symphonic pieces and singing them, as follows…

[Embedded content]

Some friends of my father had a quartet, and the piece I always enjoyed most was singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame, getting the words off by one syllable from the music. They kept singing and looking at each other and trying to figure out what was wrong, ending one syllable before the music ended. I used to be able to do it, but it takes practice, and I can’t do it anymore!

To see where I’m coming from (and for a really fun review), please listen to the Late Seating (with Jason Harding and Steve Shives) review of Iron Man they just did a few days ago to coincide with the release of Avengers: Infinity War (and because IM is now 10 years old, one of their review criteria); I can’t link it here, because my work filters won’t let me go there from here, but it’s funny.

If you like comedy with your movie reviews, Late Seating is really good.

Meanwhile this is the top polling RepubliKKKlan running against Dianne Feinstein…

The man in question is Patrick Little, an extremist with hardline anti-Semitic views who is backed by David Duke and other far-right extremists. Little will be squaring off in a top-two primary with 10 other Republicans as well as Democrats and independents on June 5 for the chance to oppose veteran Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein. According to a recent poll, released last week, he very much has a chance of winning the right to face off with the incumbent.

A poll conducted by local ABC News affiliates along with the polling company Survey USA, suggested that Little is polling at 18 percent of the vote on the Republican ticket, a full 10 points ahead of his next strongest opponent. The 84-year-old Feinstein, who first entered office way back in 1992, at the start of Bill Clinton’s first term, remains a solid favorite to win the state—polling at 39 percent.

It really was a big gamble on Marvel’s part. RDJ was still viewed as “damaged goods” in Hollywood, Iron Man wasn’t as big a Marvel property as the X-Men (sold to Fox) or Spiderman (sold to Sony), Jon Favreau was still relatively new to Hollywood, and comic book movies had taken a seriously dive after the late-90s/early-00s period of exchanging “wild and wacky” for “dark and angsty.”

Marvel was prepared to accept just breaking even, possibly even making enough to fund a sequel. Despite what it seems like now, there was no plan in place when they filmed that Nick Fury post-credits scene.

Sort of, but not quite, because Marvel/Universal already had The Incredible Hulk in the can when Iron Man released to theaters (IM released in May 2008, TIH released a month later) and they had quite a few references to IM and the nascent MCU already in that movie, including the appearance of Downey-as-Tony Stark about the Avenger Initiative, much as Sam Jackson did in Iron Man, and StarkTech references throughout.

However, it was indeed a huge gamble to create a massive cinematic universe from whole cloth.

‘You guys love being politically incorrect, right? Okay, let’s do that.’

‘First off - fuck your feelings, let’s get real.’

Wolf got way too real for the press corps. She told them what they really are, and they hated that brief unvarnished look they had at themselves.

They’ll happily side with a woman who considers them enemies of the state rather than look honestly at how they are failing at their jobs.

It’s also the reason why he was so good as Sherlock Holmes in the Guy Richie films, because he played well the more “true-to-the-books” image of Holmes as a eccentric, erratic character rather than tight-laced, upper-crust gentleman that later depictions have gone for.

Does the South win in the Fox version?

The favorite subject of alternate history writers. Winston Churchill himself wrote one.

Harry Turtledove’s Southern Victory is an epic 11 volume series in the genre. Without giving away too much, only the prologue is about the Civil War itself, explaining the “hinge point” where his history diverges from the real one. The rest is a remarkably elaborate history of the alternate world that results, right up to the middle of the twentieth century.

Southern Victory

The Southern Victory series or Timeline-191 are fan names given to a series of eleven alternate history novels by author Harry Turtledove, beginning with How Few Remain (1997) and published over a decade.

This alternate world is pointedly much worse than the real one where the south lost, and not just for the United States.

I read this piecce a while back and thought of it when someone mentioned Tuna Leaden.

I’m a former reality TV star who almost became a conservative pundit. I couldn’t stomach it.

“I know you said you’re not politically conservative, but with your doctorate in religious studies and your look, you could get a lot of work as a talking head or host for a conservative outlet. They love blonde, girl-next-door types.”

I heard some version of this from half a dozen agents when I was looking for TV work. I wasn’t surprised. It was not the first time I was asked to lie about my identity for the sake of making “good” television. As a former reality TV star, I understood the game well.

The first time I realized I was a brand, not a person, was in 1998. I had just starred on the MTV reality show Road Rules: Down Under. Like many young people in the late ’90s, I had loved the new wave of reality TV shows like Real World, and I found the unscripted and seemingly “real” nature of the cast members refreshing and authentic.

I decided to audition (via VHS tape!) to be a part of one of these social experiments. I was thrilled when I was chosen for the “ride of my life” as a cast member on Road Rules. I filmed my first season of reality TV at 18 years old.

It wasn’t until after we wrapped up filming and the show began airing that I began to see that through editing, I had been distilled down to a particular trope.

Dennis Miller’s whole shtick is he’s a “thinking man’s comedian,” i.e. he throws a reference to the Battle of Thermopylae into a joke and the “smart guy” in the audience goes “I get it!” It’s why he totally bombed when he was brought on to provide commentary for Monday Night Football, because they expected a comedian and instead got the college professor who laughs at his own jokes. It says a lot that even back in ‘99, when he first started as commentator, the common complaint from viewers was “he sounds scripted.”

Speaking of moguls and such, there is a lot of tweeting action going on right now but like usual so many are targeting the front men/women.

People like Ingraham and Lauren etc. are just the pawns of the real players, like Murdoch, Epperson and Atsinger (heads of Salem, owners of outlets like Red State, lots of radio states, etc.), David Smith (head of Sinclair, owns oodles of outlets), etc.

I see so many young people who want to be progressive and support their gay or transgendered friends, or who want to support their brown-skinned friends, etc., but then who turn right around and willingly put money in the pockets of the likes of Murdoch.

This is why any attempt to reform America has to go straight to one of the key issues: that a small group of people have extreme influence through great wealth.

I read this piecce a while back and thought of it when someone mentioned Tuna Leaden.

I’m a former reality TV star who almost became a conservative pundit. I couldn’t stomach it.

Thank you for posting that. As a religious lefty, I found her thinking interesting. Especially when admitting to being tempted. I remember a great bit in a novel where the main character was tempted by an offer of everything he’d ever wanted to look the other way about the issue he was investigating…

He fought to keep his words even. “Just … wrestling with temptation.”
Illyan’s voice came back, amused. “Who’s winning?”
Miles’s eye followed the cracks in the plaster, overhead. His voice came out high and light, on a sigh: “I think … I’m going for the best two falls out of three.”

Speaking of women and outrage:

Saudi Arabia ‘sorry’ for promotional footage of women wrestlers

Saudi Arabia’s sport authority has apologised for the appearance of scantily clad women during a wrestling broadcast.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) held matches in Jeddah, billed as its Greatest Royal Rumble.

Men and women attended, although no female wrestlers were allowed to take part in the fights.

But state television cut off its broadcast of the event when promotional footage showing female wrestlers aired.

The footage rolled on giant television screens around the arena during the fight.

Saudi General Sports Authority apologised for what it described as “indecent scenes”.

What happened was, even though no women were allowed on the show, and WWE did not bring any women at all, during the show they aired one of their in-program video inserts of some of their female talent speaking about how great things are.

Apparent the image of these (mix of married and single) women, heads uncovered, in the video stream was too much.

No, it’s right in your first paragraph; it was the WWE running promos of their female roster on the venue screens during the show (even though the WWE left the ladies back here in the US) that was broadcast by Saudi state TV and that’s what the kerfuffle is about.

In any case, fuck the WWE and Vince McMahon and fuck the Saudi royals.

That’s probably lower than the percentage of Californians who believe in Chupacabra.

Just to put things in a different perspective.

Overall, the Republican party in California is in bad shape. The sane ones are fewer and fewer and threatening to leave the party (e.g., Schwarzenegger) and they are old. Young people are not joining the party much. And the middle age to elderly who are left in the party will be the distilled remnant of bigots and rich people (hence the neo-Nazi.)

Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s choice to serve as his spokeswoman met with President Trump to assure him of her loyalty to his agenda so that she would be hired, according to a report from the Washington Post.

Sarah Isgur Flores, who has worked as an adviser for GOP candidates and organizations for at least a decade, told the president in a 2017 Oval Office meeting that she supported his agenda and would be honored to work in his administration, several sources familiar with the meeting told the Post.

The meeting was seen as necessary because Isgur Flores had criticized Trump during the 2016 campaign and would likely lose her chance at the job unless she met with Trump, according to the Post. Cabinet secretaries typically have the freedom to make their own hires.

Flores declined The Hill’s request for comment.

I watched the first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 and they already took it to eleventy and I’m like this is White Girl Privilege.

I mean they are showing a fiction show about atrocities being done to White Girls that have been done to Women of Color for millennia.

If I recall the novel correctly, Blacks were in detention centers and thus weren’t really part of the story. I thought the novel was very sad so I’m not tempted to watch the series although I’ve read glowing reviews.

I don’t really check the local news outlets. And AM Radio around here has long been dominated by the hate-right, ever since Clear Channel started to rise. With only a few exceptions.

I do know that even though Facebook knows where I live, that I don’t get any political ads anymore. Then again, many of the 2016 ones I got on Facebook were probably Russian funded, given some of my relatives.

If the neo-Nazi does come in 2nd in the primary, and thus get on the final ballot (though I’m expecting two Dems on the Nov ballot), I strongly suspect that many local Republicans will find themselves in a tough spot.

In most places with a city, Republicans are already rare. That Car Thief remains in office has to do with his district running up to Orange county, and even though his coastal San Diego district portion contains some of the wealthiest communities in the country, on the whole that part of San Diego county has inched into Democratic side, the holdouts being much about fundamentalists and very rich people who are only in politics for the tax cuts.

In the novel, Giliead was a white supremacist authoritarian state but the Hulu series completely ignores the racism angle, even including a few WOC as Handmaids and showing June in an interracial relationship.

I watched season 1 in tandem with episodes of Underground (which was cancelled) and it struck me how similar they were.

There was a scene described in the novel which was not included in the series (at least not yet). Gilead expelled all the Jews. Of course by that time a whole bunch of random people who were not Jews wanted to leave so only Hasidics who could pass a “religion test” were allowed to leave, non-Orthodox Jews were not allowed to leave.

She enjoys lying to the press the exact same way her Dad lied about why he overrode the Arkansas parole board and allowed Wayne Dumond to go free so he could rape and kill again. Horrible. It looked like a TV movie, and I could tell Connery was just phoning in his performance, because by that time he’d already decided to quit as 007. Access journalism has always been a problem, it’s not new.

Indeed, 100 years ago Presidents could do basically what they wanted without the press really knowing what was going on. Only the other politicians in DC and lobbyists that hung around them could really know what was going on in the government.

Here in 2018 we’ve grown accustomed to instant everything, but it is pretty clear that the truth, whatever that is, is hardly instant.

I’m cynical enough about our society by now to think that frankly most Americans just don’t care what Trump does as long as they are allowed to go about their daily routine as usual. Why should they care if someone they will never know gets deported? Why should they care if some person never gets into a hospital because of costs, if they don’t know that person?

This is why Trump is President today: because a great many Americans just don’t care.

On the drive over, I wondered what would happen if the WHCA put out an apology like this. I really should have been wondering when it would happen, because I knew that journalists have spines of vermicelli when “access” is on the line.

What’s the most disgusting part of it all is they’ve effectively thrown Michelle to the wolves (no pun intended), trying to act as though they were caught totally unaware of who it was they brought in to do jokes. I may have to agree that it’s time to put an end to the WHCD if this is the sort of chickenshit attitude that greets the least bit of criticism.

They say…
Each day, we work to ensure that the men and women who cover the White House have the ability to seek answers from powerful officials, up to and including the President.

But they leave out “We don’t care if the answers are truthful or pure bullshit, and just don’t say anything mean about Sarah Huckabee and the lies she tells, or we’ll have to call you out, because it’s all about the access, baby.”

I was looking for a cheap MacBook for my gf—anybody know what’s wrong with Craigslist? It takes every page forever to load—doesn’t even show on MenuMeters. Searches always come up in gallery—you can hit “list” till your finger falls off, but it comes back up in gallery. The first thumbnail isn’t finished loading after 15 minutes. Tried killing my VPN—no difference. Tried Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome—same thing. Rebooted—same thing. Every other site is fine.

I doubt Michelle will care much about the WHCA. If anything, she’s going to become a rallying point.

However, the vermicelli, on the other hand, are going to be ridiculed by everyone. Not only will they continue to be pissed on by Trump (he’s into that kind of thing we hear), but now even more people in general will deride them.

And other journalists will see an opening to start to look at their own profession with another perspective. It’s a competitive business, and I’m sure there are a lot of up-and-comers who will want to make their mark.

Try here groups.google.com It’s a Mac oriented swapping/selling mail list. Everything from old Apple II to the latest Mac’s move on it. Put up a WTB ad (after reading the FAQs) and you’ll probably find something in your budget range.

Hannibal Buress: The comic who kindled the Cosby firestorm

By Tre’vell Anderson Dec 31, 2015

Just over a year ago, a comedy routine by Hannibal Buress changed the lives of nearly 50 women.

“Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the ’80s,” Buress said during a show at a Philadelphia comedy club, mocking Bill Cosby. “Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby. So turn the crazy down a couple notches.”

Yeah, my “Early 2009” Whitebook is stuck on El Capitan. Sierra’s big feature was Siri on the Mac, which I would never use, and High Sierra’s is a new file system that’s incompatible with hard disks, so screw ‘em anyway.

Also, High Sierra’s new file system is only compatible with solid state hard drives. My Mac Mini with a fusion drive had major problems when I tried to upgrade. I was glad an Apple Store genius was able to realign the Fusion Drive to get it going again!

Yeah, that’s what I meant. It will format your hard disk in the old filesystem if that’s what you have. I’m not sold on storage with no moving parts that actually wears out!

What I want is a “Mid-2012” MacBook Pro—the last one with a hard disk and an optical drive. They actually sold them till October 2016, so it should be a few years before they’re unusable.

Pretty much. My daughter is pretty good with computers, but not on the level of wanting to deal with Linux and its many quirks. Their existing Windoze laptop is also getting long in tooth and Wheat-Dogg Jr and I are advising them on what would make a good replacement. Wheat-Doggette is comfortable with both Mac and Windows, but her husband is more of a Windows guy. Plus, Macs for all their swoopy tech and ease of use are still more expensive than a similar Windows machine.
