Trump Will Attend the NRA Convention in Dallas - Guns Not Allowed

Politics • Views: 38,716

In today’s episode of “Everything is Horrible,” we learn that our so-called president is going to the extreme right wing National Rifle Association’s annual meeting, just to make it very clear where he stands on gun violence.

And to really ram the point home about who these people think should be protected from the deadly weapons they relentlessly worship, there are no guns allowed while Trump or Mike Pence speak. Because it just wouldn’t look good if some upstanding good guy with a gun suddenly decides to become a “mentally ill” bad guy with a gun at their event.

Schools, on the other hand, are being encouraged to have as many guns on the premises as possible.

UPDATE at 4/30/18 11:46:36 am by Charles Johnson

Trump’s gun-crazed base is not happy about this restriction, either.

Some gun enthusiasts and apparent NRA members are displeased at the prohibition. At Texas CHL Forum, a message board for gun owners, commenters aired their frustrations.

“Obviously even republicans and so called leaders don’t trust the ‘good guys.’ I realize it’s the VP, but still makes our whole argument look foolish,” a commenter who self-identified as an NRA member said Thursday.

“You may disagree … but in my opinion the very people that claim to protect the 2A should never host an event that requires disarming the good guys. Sad. No excuses for this … it makes us look stupid,” the commenter said.

Another self-identified NRA member agreed, saying Friday: “Me personally, I won’t be listening to him speak. I won’t be going anywhere that I cant carry my firearm. It’s essentially the nations largest get together for gun owners and they won’t let law abiding legal gun owners carry guns because someone who’s supposedly pro 2A thinks its too ‘dangerous’? thats liberal logic right there.”

So all that mocking of gun free zones while they have a gun free convention.

The NRA is fucked up enough that they would allow unlimited weapons at all their events. The “No Guns” policy is set by the venue.

I wonder if they’re actually going to talk about guns, or will it just be Dan Bongino and Dana Mah Gunz babbling about liberals, socialists, college kids, abortion, gays, and fantasizing about burning down the NYT.

This is why NRA membership is such a miniscule percentage of gun owners. If the trigger on a gun was as disconnected from the hammer as the NRA is reality we would have the safest gun ever made.

One of the “featured products” at the NRA annual meeting is a pistol that looks like a cellphone. What could go wrong?

And you thought the cellphone that looked like a gun was as bad as it could get.

“Of course the officer shot him. How was he to know it wasn’t one of those guns that look like a cell phone. How dare you suggest that the officer only shot him because he was black”

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature

I think the Secret Service had the last call on this one. I saw something about that the other day when this news first dropped.

Still - pretty funny to watch the NRA meeting turned into a gun-free zone.

Trump’s gun-crazed base is not happy about this restriction, either.

Some of these idiots are having a stopped clock moment in terms of the optics of the NRA’s convention being a gun free zone relative to their arguments on school safety, etc.

And anyone who won’t go anywhere without a firearm isn’t one of the “good guys” these fools are talking about. That’s just someone itching to shoot someone—probably a minority at that.

The other point is that there is NO REASON for a ‘law-abiding gun owner’ to carry something like this, unless you’re carrying it to flout the law.

When I went back to Illinois last year to meet up with friends and co-workers, one of them was so giddy about his concealed-carry permit. Seems to me that if a shooting broke out, trying to figure out who is “The Good Guy with a gun” vs “The Bad Guy with a gun” is going to lead to a lot of unforeseen consequences - after all, who goes in to a situation wearing a sign that says: “I’m the Good Guy with a Gun”?

Crossfires galore….And what these yahoo’s don’t dare talk about is a Good Guy with a gun can become a bad buy with a gun in an instant for any number of reasons - think jilted lovers….

Then, why doesn’t the NRA only hold conventions at sites that allow guns? I understand the Secret Service rules on this. But the NRA should show the courage of their convictions and tell elected officials that they aren’t welcome if the NRA guns aren’t welcome.

The model of crime where it’s always outsiders and driven by “evil” is a just-so story. Anybody who pushes the idea that they can easily discern the “bad guy” is either about to fuck up, apply lynch mob logic, or—and this seems to be the case so far—both.

It has been a racist party all my life (more than half a century). It was already headed there before the Civil Rights Act. Nixon and Reagan finished the job. All Trump did was remove the dog whistles that liberals already knew were dog whistles.

Army investigates 101st Airborne chaplains accused of dismantling on-post programs for Jewish soldiers - Army Times

“… Chaplains in the 101st Airborne Division have fired the longstanding Jewish lay leaders at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, allegedly without providing any reason, effectively ending Friday night Shabbat services for Jewish soldiers and their families.

The two ranking chaplains also refused to support the Jews’ attempts to celebrate Passover on March 30, the first night of the eight-day long religious celebration, allegedly because it conflicted with Christians’ Good Friday observances and would save money during the installation’s four-day holiday. …

… At the meeting in which she was terminated, two subordinate chaplains did not give her a reason for her dismissal, and would only say they appreciated her service of many years, according to Mize.

“I asked him what he ‘appreciated,’ since he and [the other chaplain] had never been to a worship event, even though I had invited them for High Holy Days and Shabbat,” she said.”

One of the chaplains told her he had been busy with a Catholic event and that another Christian Army chaplain reported back to him.

When Mize said that chaplain has never attended a religious worship service, he responded that “it would compromise his religion to attend,” according to Mize.

“They had to celebrate Passover on a non-Passover date,” Weinstein said. “That’s like telling Christians ‘I know you want to do Christmas on Dec. 25, but it’s more convenient if you do it on Dec. 7, so we can save money.’ …”

Over here in the Old West, Wyoming’s governor tried to do the same thing to the State Superintendent of Education Cindy Hill in 2013. She went to court to challenge the illegal power-stripping move and won. (Gov. Matt Mead-R tried to subsume her powers under the governor’s office.)

The state supreme court declared in 2014 the law passed to make her a ceremonial head was unconstitutional.

trib.com (Casper Star-Tribune)

Afterward, a Republican legislator running in the primary against Liz Cheney posted to his Facebook page that Mrs. Hill was “lawless.” Cindy Hill sued him, but lost a defamation case in court.

trib.com

In a later-deleted Facebook post, Stubson allegedly wrote that during Hill’s time as state superintendent, she “was not following the law, was out of control, had committed illegal acts that the Wyoming Legislature had not disclosed to the public, and that the Legislature had to stop her,” according to Hill’s lawsuit.

Hill’s suit claimed that the Facebook comments were the latest in a continuing pattern of malicious conduct. Also at issue were statements [Tim] Stubson [former Rep, R-Casper] made during a debate about his support for the law.

Stormy goes for it: defamation suit filed.

Porn actress Stormy Daniels on Monday filed a new lawsuit against President Donald Trump, accusing him of defamation for his response on Twitter to the release of a composite sketch of a man who allegedly threatened Daniels in 2011.

The new lawsuit takes issue with Trump’s tweet about Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, earlier in April. She and her lawyer released a composite sketch of the man Daniels claims threatened her to stay quiet about Trump in 2011. Trump said that the sketch depicted a “nonexistent man” and claimed that the release of the image was a “con job,” retweeting a message arguing that the sketch looked similar to Daniels’ husband.

“In making the statement, Mr. Trump used his national and international audience of millions of people to make a false factual statement to denigrate and attack Ms. Clifford,” Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti, wrote in the complaint. “Mr. Trump knew that his false, disparaging statement would be read by people around the world, as well as widely reported, and that Ms. Clifford would be subjected to threats of violence, economic harm, and reputational damage as a result.”

Charles Pierce, of course, has some thoughts about the WHCA letter and the event itself.

Anyone who thinks that “a vigorous and free press” and “honoring civility” are equally desirable goals doesn’t love the former enough to deserve the latter…

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is not your friend. She is, professionally, the enemy. I don’t care if most of the time she’s a combination of Florence Nightingale, Mother Superior, and Cher. When she gets behind the podium, her job is to belittle you and your profession and, by proxy, all of us who practice it. She is a tower of contempt. That she was discomfited on Saturday night because of a comedian is part of what she gets paid for. Discomfiting the likes of Sarah Huckabee Sanders is part of what Michelle Wolf got paid for. The forces were perfectly in balance.

And he wraps it all up nicely with:

Next year, they should have that dinner in Stockholm.

while trump may have suggested, requested or even demanded the payments, i’d think someone, anyone with any experience or expertise at all (like the finance people who cut the damn checks and (ought to) know the rules) would have said (if true) cant do it — don’t do it. its so way far over the line there will be no explanation possible….i mean unless youre just hoping no one sees it and you dont get caught….

Sure there’s an explanation: IOKIYAR

I would be absolutely amazed if the FEC does anything about it, considering its makeup.

Moreover, if they actually did do something, Trump could claim he knew nothing about it, and it was some rogue campaign staffer who authorised it.

Then, why doesn’t the NRA only hold conventions at sites that allow guns? I understand the Secret Service rules on this. But the NRA should show the courage of their convictions and tell elected officials that they aren’t welcome if the NRA guns aren’t welcome.

Didn’t the big Don make a point of saying that gun free zones are invitations for criminals to come in and use guns to kill, rape and rob.

He better explain this to the Secret Service.

Big Don should tell the NRA he isn’t coming as it is not safe.

Nebraska has long been a haven for refugees.

Regarding Syrian refugees, Nebraska has the largest number per capita by state.

The Washington Post did an article about this:

How to be an American: Syrian refugees find a home in Trump country

OMAHA — The rice and chicken were steaming on the stove. The twins chased each other around the apartment and the 2-year-old watched Mickey Mouse on the donated television.

Their mother, Fatema Aljasem, 29, sat at the kitchen table with two women from the local synagogue. Since the Syrian was granted asylum in September, the women had been helping her learn English. She pulled at her hijab and pointed at the words, mouthing ways of conjugating the verb “to go.”

“Shadi goes to school. Ahmad goes to work.”

The one that seemed especially challenging these days, though, was the verb “to be.” How to be calm in the daily chaos of motherhood. How to be comfortable in this new place where the president had just banned refugees like her. How to be an American.

Here in deeply conservative Nebraska, President Trump’s executive order banning refugees and people from seven majority-Muslim nations elicited complicated feelings about the state’s relationship with refugees. Many Nebraskans had supported attempts to keep the country safe but still wanted to show their heart for people fleeing terrorism and war. Their state has taken in more refugees per capita than any other.

Only Democrats Could F*ck This Up, Volume Infinity

The DCCC manages to throw both of its candidates for a House seat under the bus.

I have come to the sad conclusion that, regardless of what happens this November, the DCCC is guaranteed to do just that. There seems to be no coherent policy regarding the idea of competitive primaries. Vox has an interesting look at a winnable congressional race in Texas that has become entirely banjaxed because the DCCC can’t get out of its own way. There are two perfectly fine candidates, both women, and the DCCC somehow has turned this into a problem.

….

In short, in this one campaign, the DCCC already has ratfcked one perfectly fine candidate and then ignored the other one. This kind of bungling not only creates problems on the ground, but it feeds one of the political media’s favorite narratives: namely, Democrats In Disarray.

And as someone pointed out somewhere long ago, the key determiner of whether a given Congressman or Senator voted for the VRA and the CRA was not party, but geography. Southern Democrat and Southern Republicans voted against. Northern Democrats and Northern Republicans voted for.

State officials say most Medicaid expansion enrollees already have a job or would not be required to work due to age, chronic conditions or other exemptions. The remaining 5 percent — about 36,000 enrollees — would be at risk of losing coverage if they do not engage in work activities.

According to state estimates, up to half, or 18,000, could fall off the rolls the first year, for a projected savings of $30 million in the multibillion-dollar program.

The Republican-controlled General Assembly last year approved a bill requiring Gov. John Kasich’s administration to submit the request as conservatives continue to anguish over the governor’s push to expand Medicaid eligibility to more adults age 19 to 64 without dependent children.

Two public hearings earlier this year on Ohio’s proposal drew dozens of critics who argued that work requirements would strip health insurance for vulnerable Ohioans, denying criticial care from those in need.

Wendy Patton, senior project director for Policy Matters, said most Medicaid beneficiaries have full- or part-time jobs, but work requirements are still difficult for them because hours in fast food or other typical low-wage jobs often vary and may be seasonal. Workers who don’t get enough hours could lose Medicaid coverage.

“This policy will end up kicking people out of medical care and making it harder for them to work, not easier,” she said.

I can actually explain that:
Hoover did well against Al Smith because of Anti-Catholicism in the South.

Eisenhower was a popular war hero who could have ran under any party and Adlai Stevenson was seen as an egghead type by many Southern Dem voters.

Carter was very unique I concede but as well as he did in 1976 in the South, he did worse four years later when Reagan who unlike Ford used the Southern Strategy.

Let’s look at this way. The South has grown more Republican as the GOP has moved to the right on Civil Rights and if these ostriches want to act like the Republican Party hasn’t grown more hostile to Civil Rights since 1964, I’ll gladly point out that in 1964 the Dems nominate the signer of the Act while the Republicans nominated one of the few Non-Southerners to oppose it. And it’s been downhill ever since.

It is true, but I’m actually not quite sure where the two-different-speed-limits thing came from. It’s been around since Indiana started increasing the speed limit on federal interstates from the historical 55 mph back in the early 2000’s. It does make navigating Indiana’s freeways a pain in the ass, though, especially since the volume of trucking running through the Crossroads of America is rather significant.

Differential speed limits is due to safety.

Nebraska and Wyoming have equal speed limits (Nebraska 75, Wyoming 80).

The reason given is usually along the lines of it takes a lot more distance to stop an 80,000 pound truck than a 3,000 pound car.

It’s been that way for decades…at least since the 1970s

John Kelly is a proven liar. Witness his treatment of Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. So his denial means nothing.

Rex Tillerson OTOH never denied the statements attributed to him.

James Woods has a reported IQ of 180 (may not be totally accurate); he received a 1579 out of 1600 on the SAT’s and was admitted to MIT.

IQ tests start becoming unreliable after three standard deviations or so, due to the insignificant pool of people to standardise the tests much above that. While there are high-IQ societies which have higher requirements than Triple Nine and ISPE (3 SD), they are questioned due to the instability of scoring above 3SD.

Lots of people get admitted to MIT. Not a sign of exceptional intelligence. (While the exceptionally intelligent probably have a better chance, so do the exceptionally wealthy.)

IQ tests tell us nothing about morality, compassion, creativity, or human understanding. They are a measure of certain technical skills and memory.

They don’t usually measure technical skills and memory. Those are measured on tests like the military’s ASVAB test.

While the current theories of intelligence include those (and other) qualifications, the overwhelming majority of tests measure fluid intelligence (Gf) [quoting Wikipedia here, citation needed] including the broad ability to reason, form concepts, and solve problems using unfamiliar information or novel procedures.

Tests such as the California Test of Mental Maturity don’t even use written language: The entire test is pictures.

188
Anymouse 🌹  Apr 30, 2018 • 3:48:02pm

On James Woods’s reported IQ (who reported it):

On a related note, this fixed standard deviation (fifteen points) means that the proportion of the population who have IQs in a particular range is theoretically fixed, and current Wechsler tests only give Full Scale IQs between 40 and 160. This should be borne in mind when considering reports of people with much higher IQs.

That range is true of most tests, though some go a few points higher or lower.

Moreover, a person with a putative IQ score of 160 is not meant to imply that person is one-third more intelligent than a person who scores 120.

Senate Democrats successfully force a vote on Net Neutrality, now scheduled for May 9.

engadget.com

Democrats in Congress have been against the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality rules from the beginning. They’ve had the signatures in favor of restoring the rules since January, along with a companion House bill (with 80 co-sponsors). Senator Edward J. Markey also introduced a formal Congressional Review Act “resolution of disapproval” in February. Now, Markey tweeted that Democrats will force a floor vote restore the rules on May 9th.

Of course, this last-ditch attempt to save net neutrality can only help congressional supporters of as they move into mid-term elections. “We’re in the homestretch in the fight to save net neutrality,” Senator Chuck Schumer said in a statement. “Soon, the American people will know which side their member of Congress is on: fighting for big corporations and ISPs or defending small business owners, entrepreneurs, middle-class families and every-day consumers.”

A recent study came out showing the IQ of children can be lower if they are raised by mothers with clinical depression (the assumption is less emotional support of the child).

The press is misreporting the meaning of the study, as it’s been a long time since the press employed science reporters. That reporting is all Depression will make your kids dumb!

The researchers themselves noted the limitations: The test used does not have a sufficient pool of pre-schoolers to properly norm the test. That said, the test used scores IQ from 1-19, and the deviation between children was 0.34 points. One standard deviation on that test is 1.94.

Writer Carlos Sagan goes into the hair-on-fire reporting from ABC, what the researchers actually said about their longitudinal study, and how you take an interesting and probably significant study (if it can be repeated) and turn it into hair-on-fire clickbait at ABC.

lawhawk  Apr 30, 2018 • 4:47:56pm

I’ve posted before, but it’s worth mentioning again, but the NRA convention is a gun-free zone. It’s been that way for years.

And when the gun nuts go there once a year, it turns out that gun injury/death rates drop significantly everywhere else for the duration of the convention.

A decline of 63 percent was seen in the states where the conventions were being held, apparently due to large numbers of gun owners being at the events, as well as, in some cases, gun venues such as firing ranges or hunting grounds having closed while their staff attended the convention.

Nationally, there was a 20 percent reduction in firearm injuries during the convention.

In contrast, gun-related crime did not decrease during the conventions.

Turns out that the gun nuts aren’t so good with their guns, so when they can’t use them normally, it makes it safer for everyone else.

What a shocker.

I don’t drink as much as I used to. Part of the reason is I have been drinking sugar free rockstar for a little more than a decade, so that handles my caffeine needs. And part is because I typically try to control my calories, but I tend tiny be bad at that too

Diet Dr. Pepper is delicious. <3

I drink diet soda and use sucralose in Kool-Aid because a VA dentist several years ago said if I kept drinking half-a-gallon of Kool-Aid a day plus sugar soda I could kiss my teeth good-bye.

I mostly stick to Diet Crush or Diet Mountain Dew (and Diet Vernor’s when I can get it).

Sugar sodas such as Triple Cola or Nehi Orange are rare treats.

OT. I’ve been meaning to ask, is it terra-incognita, or terrain-cognita?

WW—weren’t you the one that was having the same problem I did with embedded tweets in Firefox? It took me a few days, but I finally thought to search exactly that: “embedded tweets in Firefox”. (Brain salad surgery, right?)

I found a discussion on the Mozilla forum with a guy who had the same problem. First they wanted him to refresh Firefox (which tosses all your extensions, so…no thanks). “I told you I already did that.” Then they wanted him to just wipe FF and start over from scratch. “Did that, too.”

Finally somebody chimed in about disabling “Tracking Protection”. Bingo! You should see a little shield icon next to the favicon in the address bar. Click on that and you see “Tracking Protection” which you can “disable for this…”—mine says “site”, they said “session”. I don’t know if that’s a version difference or a Mac vs. PC difference, so you might have to do it each time…but anyway, it worked! Tweets show in all their resource-hog glory!

Disabling “protection” sounds like a bad idea, but if nobody else has it, and I got by without it on FF until recently—and haven’t been arrested yet—I’ll chance it.

California had (has) trailers limited to 55 on some highways. I tow a trailer behind my harley and could never get a clear answer whether that applied to me or not.
So I tooled along in the right lane at 55.

I did find out that inspection stations “all trailers must exit here” did not apply to me. “What are you doing here?”. “sign said all trailers”. “no, not you”. Ok

I like Vernors. I like a and w root beer and a good sasparilla. Here in northern New York we have saranac, which is the local cheap soda and they make a good ginger ale and a decent root beer.

Fun fact. They come in 3 liter sizes. I used the 3 liter ginger ale and a bottle of crown royale to make a nice 3 liter highball for my 21 birthday. It was good. And it was spiked like a football when emptied.

Indianola, IA has an A&W restaurant. They still have the phones you order from at the tables. It actually distracted me a little bit because I could hear the person responding to me behind me out of sync with their voice on the phone.

The word “elite” expresses a terror of being judged, as far as I can tell.

It’s not about a real hierarchy, but about claiming victimhood exclusively and claiming all criticism is down-punching. And furthermore staking out populist real estate by painting all comers as aristos.

It’s the Ultimate Nullifier, but for structured arguments: to claim moral or intellectual equality is to actually claim inherent superiority, and thus arrogance, and thus reason and articulateness indict the articulate reasoner as, in gnostic terms, the truly immoral/ignorant one.

This is the other side of the pastoralism and sentimentality that form the folksy real genius, for whom “common sense” is real intelligence, and moral character.

Tying this into my favorite preoccupation [drink!]—

The axiom is that they get to do the judging and that their judgement can’t be questioned.

Hence being “elite”—putatively higher in standing, or better—is both the most threatening thing possible and the greatest transgression.

This is…well, it’s not something to chuckle about. Inherent hierarchy is one of the precursors to ideology that results in fucking up constantly and not admitting it, and thus constantly need heads on pikes to keep afloat.

Here’s a fun fact. Wolf worked at Bear Stearns and JPMorganChase for four years before breaking into stand-up.

He does run a tight ship, but it would be a huge black eye to the NYT if this list turns out to be faked.

Like the Iraq War? Like her E-mails? Like Maggie Haberman’s outage over Michelle Wolf? Like their support of Hitler (the first one)?

It doesn’t seem as though the NYT has shame.

For the second year in a row, someone stole credentials to nominate Donald Trump for a Nobel Prize.

washingtonpost.com

A person appears to have stolen someone’s identity to nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize — for the second year in a row.

Olav Njolstad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute and secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the Peace Prize, told The Washington Post via email that it appears the same person is responsible for both forged nominations. The perpetrator had pretended to be someone else to make the nomination, Njolstad said — someone who was qualified.

“We receive many invalid nominations each year in the sense that they don’t meet the deadline or the nominator is not in fact qualified to nominate,” Njolstad said. “But to my knowledge this is the first example of a forged nomination where someone has stolen the identity of another person.”

Must be dust in the air. From Shah Marai, one of those killed in the Kabul suicide bombing.

But there is no more hope. Life seems to be even more difficult than under the Taliban because of the insecurity. I don’t dare to take my children for a walk. I have five and they spend their time cooped up inside the house. Every morning as I go to the office and every evening when I return home, all I think of are cars that can be booby-trapped, or of suicide bombers coming out of a crowd. I can’t take the risk. So we don’t go out. I remember all too well my friend and colleague Sardar, who was killed with his wife, a daughter and a son while on an outing at a hotel, with only his small son somehow surviving the attack.

I have never felt life to have so little prospects and I don’t see a way out. It’s a time of anxiety.

Saudi Arabia will execute ‘atheist for insulting the prophet’

A Saudi Arabian man who renounced Islam and made disparaging remarks about the prophet Muhammad has been sentenced to death.

Authorities became aware of Ahmad Al-Shamri in 2014 after he uploaded a series of videos reflecting his views on social media. He was subsequently arrested on charges of atheism and blasphemy, faced trial and was sentenced to death in February 2015.

Al-Shamri is reportedly in his early 20s and comes from the city of Hafar Al-Batin, located in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.

Well, on my school board election, one of the Democrats is the vice-chair and another is a member of the board. (Three seats are up for election on the board this year.)

On my village board, beats me what chance I have. /s

State governor has a GOP defector from 2017, state senator Bob Krist. He has a legal challenge for switching parties in December from one of the candidates, Tyler Davis. I don’t know much about him, but Nebraska TV has several clips from ABC about the legal challenge to Sen. Krist. So nice to see the House FreeDUMB KKKauKKKus draft articles of impeachment against…Rosenstein…

The document, which was obtained by The Washington Post, underscores the growing chasm between congressional Republican leaders, who have maintained for months that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III should be allowed to proceed, and rank-and-file GOP lawmakers who have repeatedly battled the Justice Department during the past year.

The draft articles, which one of its authors called a “last resort,” would be unlikely to garner significant support in Congress. But the document could serve as a provocative political weapon for conservatives in their standoff with Mueller and the Justice Department.

Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus — led by Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), a Trump confidant — finalized the draft in recent days. It came after weeks of disputes with Rosenstein over the Justice Department’s response to congressional requests for documents about the decisions and behavior of federal law enforcement officials working on the Russia investigation and other federal probes, including the investigation into 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s email server.

Who leaked these questions? Rudy is my guess…

I’ve seen three theories so far:
1) Someone in the Trump team- they’re very leaky, but to be honest I don’t see how a leak would help them, as some of the questions appear to confirm certain details, and hint at further revelations.
2) Some who used to be in the Trump team when the questions were submitted, but has since left. (I”m seeing the name John Dowd mentioned.)
3) Someone from the Mueller team- they don’t expect Trump to submit to answering the questions, they’re surreptitiously putting them out to give the public a hint of what they know.

I think it’s time to deport these criminals:

Fifty-seven people linked with six Texas white supremacist groups face charges in an alleged drug and kidnapping conspiracy, according to an indictment unsealed Monday.

The loose affiliation of Texas white supremacists allegedly trafficked meth across the state since at least 2015. But the network imploded when a member of the white supremacist Aryan Circle allegedly stole money from members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, blamed someone else, then helped kidnap and cut off part of the scapegoat’s finger.

The indictment from the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, names the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, the Aryan Brotherhood (unrelated), the Aryan Circle (a splinter group of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas), the Peckerwoods (loosely affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas), the Soldiers of Aryan Culture, and the Dirty White Boys. The groups, many of which incorporate Nazi imagery, are known for their involvement in drug trafficking.

snip

The six white supremacist groups allegedly worked to traffic meth with Tango Blast, a collection of predominately Hispanic gangs in Texas.

“Throughout the investigation, agents stopped the flow or seized over 190 kilograms of methamphetamine, 31 firearms, and seized approximately $376,587 in cash,” the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a statement.

I’m not sure I even get the point here.
1. Bezos also lost something like 10 billion over a few days earlier this year when Trump’s Post Office comments drove down the price of the stock. These are all unrealized stock gains and losses.
2. Although he owns the company, I’m not sure what Amazon paying taxes or not paying taxes has to do with Bezos’ taxes and increase in net worth. If we’re concerned about that we need to restructure the tax code so that capital gains and dividends are taxed at a higher rate and more difficult to offset with losses and other accounting gimmicks.
3. Amazon hemorrhaged money for years, so they have to be sitting on an ungodly amount of loss carry forwards. We can argue about whether those need to be made less generous, but the did lose a metric fuckton of cash in their early years and the profit margins indicate they aren’t exactly making out like bandits now.

Amazon has paid taxes in prior years, though not as much as other companies on its profits, politifact.com. But its not like Amazon is doing anything illegal. The tax law allows them to do it.

I think it was Judge Learned Hand (yes, that was his real, given name) said something along the lines of “we have a patriotic duty to pay as little tax as the law allows.” I don’t get too upset when people/businesses take advantage of the tax system. What I do get annoyed with are politicians who bitch about loopholes and tax advantages and then do nothing to fix them - or do things that make those loopholes and advantages even greater.

I’ve posted before, but it’s worth mentioning again, but the NRA convention is a gun-free zone. It’s been that way for years.

And when the gun nuts go there once a year, it turns out that gun injury/death rates drop significantly everywhere else for the duration of the convention.

Turns out that the gun nuts aren’t so good with their guns, so when they can’t use them normally, it makes it safer for everyone else.

What a shocker.

Bezos net worth is based primarily on stock ownership, so if the stock price slumps, his net worth slumps with it. The company’s actual profit margin and GAAP accounting is separate and distinct as is its tax strategy to minimize its tax burden via legal methodologies (NOLs, capital losses offsetting cap gains, etc.)

The current position re: NOLs has made it easy for any company to take prior year losses and reduce current year tax burdens. It’s become even easier since the 2001 and 2003 tax acts.

Populism is a dangerous drug for democracy, mostly because it doesn’t really give a fuck about facts and details, it’s driven by emotion. In theory, that’s the beauty of our system of government (from Federalist 62):

The necessity of a senate is not less indicated by the propensity of all single and numerous assemblies to yield to the impulse of sudden and violent passions, and to be seduced by factious leaders into intemperate and pernicious resolutions.

Unfortunately, when you have moral cowards in the Senate, that seems to matter less.

Exactly. It’s within the realm or possibility for that Amazon stock to become worthless without him ever realizing any profit from it. That’s one reason we don’t tax it - how would you tax unrealized capital gains, and what would you do about unrealized losses?

Mind you, huge net worth based on unrealized capital gains allows you to borrow against it, and essentially play with other people’s money, so it’s something that is hugely beneficial but not taxable under current law.

This just shows the incredible hypocrisy of the NRA. On that second point, you can do the same with real estate (see: Trump’s entire career).

On the first point, how you treat unrealized losses when a bubble bursts could determine whether it’s a manageable recession or whether it’s a depression that will take a world war to get out of. During the dot-com bubble burst, Yahoo’s stock went from $118 in January 2000 to $8 in September of 2001. That’s a nightmare to try and figure out how to tax in anything that resembles an equitable way.

It was only a matter of time before that happened. Henry Juscewitz (sp?) tried hard to build the company into a ‘lifestyle brand’ like Harley Davidson, and failed miserably.

I read that they’re cutting loose the audio divisions which they never should have acquired in the first place. They didn’t even go to the winter NAMM (music merchandisers) show in LA, opting instead to show at a consumer electronics show in Vegas instead.

Henry’s lost the plot entirely. Bankruptcy might help, but Gibson won’t get truly fixed until they get rid of Henry and get a real guitar guy to run the company.

Meanwhile, I’m happy with my old Gibsons and have no intentions of buying any of their new stuff. They were so focused on trying to expand their empire, they’ve neglected basics like good quality control. I had to try 8 Les Pauls before I found a good one the last time I bought new. This is some weird shit.

In February 2017, a top White House aide who was Trump’s longtime personal bodyguard, along with the top lawyer at the Trump Organization and a third man, showed up at the office of Trump’s New York doctor without notice and took all the president’s medical records.

The incident, which Dr. Harold Bornstein described as a “raid,” took place two days after Bornstein told a newspaper that he had prescribed a hair growth medicine for the president for years.

“They must have been here for 25 or 30 minutes. It created a lot of chaos,” Bornstein said, who described the incident as frightening.

Bornstein said the original and only copy of Trump’s charts, including lab reports under Trump’s name as well as under the pseudonyms his office used for Trump, were taken.

I’ve no doubt this came from Trump’s team because every fucking leak comes from Trump’s team. Mueller has a team of professionals who know how to keep quiet while prosecuting a case. Trump’s team is, and always has been, more concerned with winning the media narrative… which is hard to do when your client is constantly saying stupid shit in public that undermines your ability to properly defend the case.

And Trump was really quick to jump on the ‘no questions about collusion’ thing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he had someone read him the questions, didn’t hear the word ‘collusion’ and ordered them leaked, thinking it would be a ‘win.’

Now personally, if we gotta go this route, I prefer Space Corps. Under the Department of the Air Force. Similar to the Marine Corps under the Department of the Navy

There is only one branch that has practiced putting people in containers and having them spend long periods of time away from support. And the Air Force isn’t it.

Good point. I consider the separate Air Force a failed experiment anyway, that needs to to be roled back into the Army. Any force operating in “This New Ocean” should be part of the Navy.

re: #627 makeitstop

That’s gotta change.

Wouldn’t it be something if the folks at Heritage Guitars could somehow end up owning the Gibson brand name and stock.

For those that do not know, Heritage is a small boutique guitar maker that operates out of the old Kalamazoo Michigan factory that was the original Gibson factory up to when the new owner moved the production to Nashville.

I would love that. And put those guys in charge of QC. I had the opportunity to play a Heritage Les Paul, and it blew Gibson’s stuff clean out of the water.

A lot of the original Heritage guys were former Gibson workers who didn’t make the move when they went to Nashville. I’d trust them with that brand in a hot second.

And any new owners should buy Henry J out and send his ass down the road. He’s the reason they’re in the shit right now. A new broom should sweep clean, IMO.

KGxvi  May 1, 2018 • 10:10:46am

The California Supreme Court has an interesting unanimous ruling published today on whether workers are independent contractors or employees:

Workers whose roles are most clearly comparable to those of employees include individuals whose services are provided within the usual course of the business of the entity for which the work is performed and thus who would ordinarily be viewed by others as working in the hiring entity’s business and not as working, instead, in the worker’s own independent business.

That’s going to drastically change the “gig economy.” Especially since it appears that whether someone is an independent contractor is no longer up to the employer:

When a worker has not independently decided to engage in an independently established business but instead is simply designated an independent contractor by the unilateral action of a hiring entity, there is a substantial risk that the hiring business is attempting to evade the demands of an applicable wage order through misclassification. A company that labels as independent contractors a class of workers who are not engaged in an independently established business in order to enable the company to obtain the economic advantages that flow from avoiding the financial obligations that a wage order imposes on employers unquestionably violates the fundamental purposes of the wage order

And the burden in the future will be on the employer to show that the worker was established as an independent business.

Full decision here, if you’re looking for a cure for insomnia.

employee vs independent status is not something the ‘employer’ decides. nor is it a negotiated agreement between the “employer” and the “worker”.

this ‘misunderstanding’ has been going on like since forever

the irs has used a facts and circumstances test (somewhere betwen 17 and 20 or so points - its changed over time) to determine whether a relationship is in fact independent or not.

in short it comes down to who tells you what to do when to do it and how to do it.

In theory, it should be a negotiated agreement between the parties. In practice, it has rarely been negotiated, which is why the law has developed all these tests.

who has the negotiating power is only half the problem
take it or leave it works whether it’s an actual job or a budding relationship

if you dont set your own rates, hours, arent looking for other clients to service, etc etc, you are an employee. no way to ‘negotiate’ that.

is there a contract? do you submit invoices with your company name on it, do you have a business license with your state, city, county, town? do you have business insurance of one form or another? do you have an address, get mail? have a phone? then you’re likely an independent business.

it always comes down to who’s paying 1/2 the fica, unemployment insurance, disability, minimum wage laws, and issues of liability if something goes wrong.

if it’s not clear, if someone (or both) are trying to agree on some deal so as to skirt all that, then in my experioence, likely it’s an employee relationship.
