Donald Trump is ranting away again on Twitter, but that’s really getting boring. So here’s a new song and video by Jason Mraz that’s so positive and uplifting and just plain good clean fun, I dare you to be all grumpy and mean after watching it. And man, can this guy ever sing.

Have It All available now: https://Atlantic.lnk.to/HaveItAllID

The Okeanos Explorer is in the Atlantic for the foreseeable future, and today they are checking out not too deep sinkhole on the bottom of the GoM. Full of living things especially fish and squid, but also this:

Lots and lots of trash they are coming across.

Yeah. Cobb is tired of Trump not listening to counsel’s advice. He’s retiring before his reputation is completely thrashed.

Yeah, all three are somewhere in the neighborhood of $7-10 per month, depending on what package you go with. The Post as a $16/mo offer but I think that includes some sort of home delivery.

$35 per month is closer to what I pay for Hulu live

CNN reports that the filing claims the District of Columbia and Maryland state attorneys general don’t have the right to sue Trump as an individual and even if they could, “the President still is absolutely immune.”

Sovereign immunity has, thankfully, been routinely eroded over the past few decades. Try to apply a dying doctrine to a case based on an express provision of the constitution, seems… foolish.

I’d have gone with either challenging plaintiffs’ standing, or with the political thicket argument, but, you know, to each his own.

Wow. That’s brutal.

The plane was a Puerto Rico Air National Guard bird, and had apparently just departed the airport (where they also have a Gulfstream plant).

Can’t tell for sure, but the way it augured into the ground it may have had a prop go into an uncommanded reversal. It has happened before with older C-130’s.

The best, and really only argument I can see for the Emoluments Clause not applying to the President is that it’s an Article I provision and Article I pertains to the structure, scope and limits of the legislative branch.

The obvious problem with that is that the provision that immediately precedes the Emoluments Clause says:

No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time.

Which clearly and by precedent limits the power of the President and his Executive Branch Treasury Secretary to pay for shit.

RIP, dear friends.

Tail number 50996 is apparently 65-0996. It matches a C-130H originally delivered in 1965 as an HC-130 rescue version and later converted to cargo configuration. The first digit of a US military tail number is the second digit in the fiscal year of procurement. The Puerto Rico ANG’s 156th airlift wing is equipped with C-130Es and Hs of that vintage.

156th C-130E 40510 (short for 64-0510):

There’s a couple different cases going, and I wasn’t sure from reading this if this was the hotel owners case or the state AG case. I’m pretty sure at this point that standing has been resolved. I’m also confident in saying that the plaintiffs’ attorneys in these case know what they’re doing, even if this is generally uncharted waters.

Related:

Trump literally forged his goddamn ‘Perfect Health’ letter. He bribed his presidential doctor with the possibility of a VA appointment to get him to blow smoke up the media’s ass about Trump being able to ‘live until 200’. Yet Clinton not shouting from the hilltops that she had pneumonia and using a cough drop on TV was proof she was a frail broken woman that couldn’t dare be seen near the White House, and that she was a super-liar on top of all that.

And that same goddamn narrative persists even moreso now, despite direct fucking proof of Trump’s mendacity. Oh, and his lies are less of a story than bitter, satiric truth from a comedian because she mentioned make up in a joke.

I. Fucking. Hate. Everything.

I was thinking about that. Remember the Supreme Court decision that says that just because a law isn’t being enforced doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist? The lawyers should say that Congress hasn’t approved it. Just because they’re ignoring it doesn’t mean it doesn’t apply. It requires Congressional approval.

Does that automatically cause a corkscrew effect and spin the plane right out of the sky uncontrollably?

Yes. It’s pretty much impossible to recover the airplane. On takeoff you have a high angle of attack and the reversal will stall one wing almost instantly. Even if you cut the engine immediately you are already spinning vertically toward the ground.

You are just dead at that point. Rest in Peace to all involved. I feel horrible for the crewmembers and their families.

Eh, I think any competent lawyer would throw all of these arguments in a case like this. Granted, whether Trump still has competent lawyers is a whole other matter. I’m intrigued by the litigation strategy more than anything.

That said, I remain firmly of the belief that none of this really matters unless/until Democrats take back at least one chamber of Congress.

if you accept the assumption that there are standards of dress and behavior that women must adhere to in order to be considered virtuous and proper. If you accept that entertaining people, male or female, makes one a sexual object.

these are underlying assumptions that are behind a lot of modern attitudes about interaction.

Remember earlier the story with the moderate Republican asking for some Democrats to help the moderate Republicans out by not being too far left and maybe “become Republicans” to get moderate votes.

I heard a radio commercial a bit ago that gave an example of how that goes over in Trump Republican times.

It was for a Ohio State Rep candidate that was saying her opponent only declared to be a Republican in 2016 and has “dark money” from liberals behind her making her a fake Republican that is trying to sneak in and upset a REAL CONSERVATIVE…with anti-abortion credentials and 2nd Amendment stances.

Yep, that is exactly what would happen trying to help out the moderate Republicans.

re: #111 Backwoods_Sleuth

When the Washington Redskins took their cheerleading squad to Costa Rica in 2013 for a calendar photo shoot, the first cause for concern among the cheerleaders came when Redskins officials collected their passports upon arrival at the resort, depriving them of their official identification.

For the photo shoot, at the adults-only Occidental Grand Papagayo resort on Culebra Bay, some of the cheerleaders said they were required to be topless, though the photographs used for the calendar would not show nudity. Others wore nothing but body paint. Given the resort’s secluded setting, such revealing poses would not have been a concern for the women — except that the Redskins had invited spectators.

A contingent of sponsors and FedExField suite holders — all men — were granted up-close access to the photo shoots.

One evening, at the end of a 14-hour day that included posing and dance practices, the squad’s director told nine of the 36 cheerleaders that their work was not done. They had a special assignment for the night. Some of the male sponsors had picked them to be personal escorts at a nightclub.

That’s from the beginning of the article. And that is not what any sane person would consider to be part of a cheerleader’s job description.

Don’t be so sure. Three of them are leaving Congress to run for governor, DeSantis in Florida and Pearce in New Mexico are most likely to be looking for work in December. Labrador in Idaho, well, it’s Idaho.

But beyond that, there are six races against Freedom Caucus members that could be in play (at least currently included on the list on the wikipedia page): Blum (IA), Brat (VA), Garrett (VA), Perry (PA), Sanford (SC), and Schweikert (AZ).

So, if we’re looking at a real wave election, we could see some culling of these assholes.

as to the President’s unfettered power to fire anyone

Ask Richard Nixon’s ghost how that worked out for him.

In ordinary circumstances, the president has the power to fire appointed officials with or without cause and with or without notice. They serve, as the saying goes, “at the pleasure of the president.”

However, the special counsel regulation state that the special counsel can only be terminated for cause, and there is a specific definition of cause within the regulations. Given the president’s oath to see that the law is faithfully executed, he is bound by said regulations.

Moreover, just because something is permissible in ordinary circumstances, that does not mean that they are always permissible. If the president terminates someone based on pretense and in order to obstruct justice, that is a crime and an impeachable offense. It is also a violation of the oath of office and abuse of office (also an impeachable offense).

Moreover, as the Nixon precedent shows: the president is bound to respond to a subpoena to produce records. And in Clinton’s case, the president was bound to provide testimony in a civil matter. Oh, and as I recently discovered, none other than Chief Justice Marshall wrote (in the murder trial of Aaron Burr) that the president would be subject to a subpoena to testify in court.

So, Donald, we ask you quite politely to fuck right the fuck off with that bullshit.

I’m really not sure if a state could bring criminal charges against a sitting president. That’s a whole new level of constitutional crisis. My gut would say that they could not (imagine some wingnut state AG bringing an indictment against a Democratic president, even on the flimsiest of grounds).

As for the presidential perp walk, what I imagine is Trump pacing the halls of the Capitol as the Senate votes on impeachment. And once that 67th vote for removal comes, him trying to return to the White House and the Secret Service stopping him and saying, “I’m sorry, sir, but you’re not authorized to be here.”

Them being sex objects is probably the prevailing default view. I’d just like to recall that it’s not the only one. I don’t see them that way. I always saw them as dancers. My bff was a Cardinals cheerleader back in the day and she was a trained dancer and being in that orbit was a lot like every other dance crew. I imagine many gay gentlemen don’t necessarily view them as sex objects either.

Ya know, I don’t mind if men like to look at women. Even me (when I was younger.) It’s what men do. However. They’d damn well better treat women with respect. Real, honest respect as autonomous humans.

Even at strip clubs, where the dancers are unquestionably sex objects, and mostly naked, there’s rules about “don’t touch” and large scary bouncers to enforce those rules. They are absolutely *NOT* required to do anything they don’t want to with any of the clients.

I don’t mind either. But the straight male view is not the only prism to view something thru and too often it’s granted that and that gives it unecessary power. So it’s nice to remind folks of the other perspectives so inclusion becomes more organic.

That’s why I said it’s PART OF THE job. I don’t think one can honestly disentangle the sex object aspect from the job as a whole. They won’t hire a woman who doesn’t look good in the costume, for example.

The thing is, 1) I don’t think that having a job that is partly being a sex object is inherently a bad thing. And it doesn’t define who these women are - this is a job they do. And 2) being a sex object IN NO WAY justifies the treatment they got and the things they were expected to do, as detailed in the article.

Realistically, there has to be a way to bring criminal charges vs. a sitting president. For example, suppose Trump really were to shoot someone on 5th avenue in broad daylight in front of hundreds of witnesses tomorrow. Saying that Congress would have to act to remove Trump from office via impeachment before anything else could be done is not an acceptable answer.

Edited to add: I agree that there’s a real concern with letting the states have too much power here, since state-level wingnuts would like nothing better than to arrest a (D) president for ‘presidenting while being a Democrat’. There’s just no good answers to the problems posed by an absolutely lawless US president.

Apparently, China has an aging problem. The one child policy has put them in a spot where 15% of their population is over 60 and 25% will be over 60 by 2040 (for comparison’s sake, in 2012, the US population over 65 was just 13%).

That is going to have a significant affect on their economic power in the next couple of decades. Of course, that might explain why Xi wants China to become a leader in AI.

There does seem to be some questions about that.

Here is a Columbus Dispatch article from April 21st.

At the link, I see there is another story linked titled: Group that gave Kucinich $20K praises Putin, accuses US of war crimes. I think that must be about the same Syrian group.

The Columbus Dispatch - Kucinich still mum about Syria, Russia connections

On Tuesday, pursuant to an order from the Ohio Ethics Commission, Kucinich disclosed that he received a $20,000 fee last year from a pro-Syria group to speak in London at a conference sympathetic to the Assad regime.

Kucinich also has struggled during the campaign to support statements made on Fox News — where he was a paid contributor — that the investigation into Russia’s 2016 election interference was evidence of a “deep state” attempt to undermine President Donald Trump.

In addition, Kucinich has made repeated appearances on Russia Today and Sputnik, outlets controlled by the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Assad’s staunchest ally in the Syrian civil war. On Saturday, Kucinich’s spokesman continued to ignore questions about whether the candidate has received money from people or groups linked to Putin or Assad.

Creating rules based on the most extreme circumstances rarely turns out well.

That said, I think one way your scenario could play out would be the 25th Amendment. That would at least temporarily remove Trump from office. In that scenario, he could stand trial, and if convicted the Congress could act to remove him from office. But Section 4 of the 25th Amendment has never been invoked, so it’s all uncharted waters and would still be a constitutional crisis.

I don’t know enough about Tulsi to say for sure, but she strikes me as the sort that is going to find a way to be an insufferable crank if she sticks around long enough.

Well then, I am sure that within days Paul Ryan will be calling for The United States House Select Committee on Niger to investigate this Trump administration lack or preparedness and protection for these soldiers.

re: #193 JordanRules

Them being sex objects is probably the prevailing default view. I’d just like to recall that it’s not the only one. I don’t see them that way. I always saw them as dancers. My bff was a Cardinals cheerleader back in the day and she was a trained dancer and being in that orbit was a lot like every other dance crew. I imagine many gay gentlemen don’t necessarily view them as sex objects either.

My lady friend’s daughter tried out to be a Denver Broncos cheerleader and was cut only in the final round. She had years of dance training. She also had a masters degree in computer science from MIT. Her husband was a graduate of the same institution. They were making mucho dinero and had a beautiful young child. Maybe she wanted to be a sex object, who knows with MIT kids, but I doubt it. I think she just liked to do dance stuff and I know for sure that she was a nut for the Broncos.

As a sixteen year old, he struck me as someone with a good heart who would be the Dem nominee if things were different, as a seventeen year old, he was someone who I thought still had a good heart but wouldn’t be a good President, and by the time I was eighteen, yeah this guy is a bit of a crank. Yeah, but I don’t know of another term that conveys the same meaning without the pejorative connotation. PART of the job is to be attractive young women in revealing clothes, to be admired for their attractiveness. I don’t think one can reasonably deny that part of the job description.

My point is - So they’re sex objects. SO WHAT? That doesn’t mean they’ve consented to all the stuff described in the article.

My point is that this is the common descriptor for attractive women be they cheerleaders, actresses, singers, newscasters, models, whatever. They are sex OBJECTS. When are attractive men, even in those same fields doing the same work, called objects? (Except for maybe Fabio.) Was GW Bush an object during his Yale cheerleading days like the women on his team? Was Tom Selleck an object during his modeling days? I believe they were known as male cheerleader and male model, respectively.

When I ask if this isn’t the core of the problem I’m suggesting that when the first term that comes to mind is “sex OBJECT” that there is no place to go but downhill after that because the personhoods of the women being discussed has already been defined as non-existent.

Or maybe it’s just me.

I trust Tulsi even less than i do Nina. Whereas Nina may just be a very naive purist, Tulsi is worse than that. She’s someone that has been praised by Bannon, has a history of bigotry towards Muslims, and actually despite what the Bros see her as, someone who hated the Obama administration from the right.

I don’t trust either of them. They’re both opportunists.

How did we get so lucky as to have Tulsi speak at our 2014 convention (she totally creeped me out, and I can’t even remember exactly why) and Nina this year (whose speeches I walked out on.) Like we don’t have enough problems.

Imma stay on the sidelines a bit on this one, because I got singed back in the Al Franken debates in a similar conversation.

But, I have heard men described as sex objects by women. It is not as wide and as openly used, but it is there.

Also, I think the wording/term is used now for anyone that is considered extremely attractive, wrong or right.

I think part of the problem is the word ‘object’, you think of ‘object’ as in a thing, as opposed to object as in ‘the object of my affection’. And yeah, Tom Selleck was a sex object during his modeling and early acting days.

But my point is even a porn star like Stormy Daniels - and I don’t think porn stars of any gender can reasonably NOT be called sex objects - does not give up her right to deny consent, whether to sex, or appearing nude, or whatever.

IMO, the problem really isn’t the use of the term sex object. It’s the idea that because part of their job is to be physically attractive women that they give up the right to deny consent to being ogled during a photo shoot, or served up as escorts.

Well, two hours at the dentist having my first cavity in more than 30 years dealt with (the novacaine has finally worn off; yay me!)
Got home to find a half-dozen wasps buzzing around the place, a carpenter bee desperately trying to find a place to hide in the kitchen, and a terrified mouse in the bathtub.
And two deliriously bouncing off the walls happy cats on a search and destroy mission (dogs were in hiding).
I am chuffed to announce that everyone survived and each and every wildlife was safely relocated back outdoors.

Time for an adult beverage, methinks.

I was sitting in my office when i saw the flash of a large wing on our deck. It was our neighbor’s young cockatoo, who had escaped their yard and flew into ours. As I walked outside, the bird took off over our fence and into a yard on the next block. We spotted it, and our neighbors went to get him.

They got him in the car and started coming back, but then the bird flew out the window and disappeared again. After looking for another half hour, my wife spotted him high up in a pine tree in the yard four houses over from ours. After trying to lure him down, they finally had to grab a ladder, and the neighbor actually had to climb the tree and carry the bird back down.

Their youngest son was the one who brought the bird outside. He’s in a little trouble from his mom, and I’d imagine his dad’s a little upset for having to climb that tree.

They need to learn to trim tertiary feathers to prevent him from doing that again.

One of my daughter’s friends had a cockatoo that conducted a similar escape. I think it took a couple days for said bird to decide to come home.

Heh I knwo man. I’m making fun of Dennis’s sense of humor that relies strongly on weird analogies. I never thought he was that funny. He reminds me whatever his ideology at the moment of Bill Maher, painfully smug and thinks he’s the most witty and smartest motherfucker in the room but isn’t.

I used to love him. He was on my list of three people (dead or alive) I’d want to have lunch with. I was unaware it was his writers I really wanted to have lunch with until many years later.

I think we both started out on the same spot and found our way where we are now due to frustration. For me, it was how the left just bellyached about Kerry instead of rallying behind him in 2004.

It’s been obvious for months now that they never took seriously the very real danger that this investigation presented. The whole idea that Trump was just gonna slide, the whole matter would be over in a matter of months if not weeks, and he’d be cleared of all wrong-doing was wishful thinking in the extreme.

Slavery did involve a lot of choice; a choice by the European bankers to finance it, since some refused in spite of the monstrous profits to be made. It was a choice by African rulers who waged war for captives and sold them to the Europeans, some refused and resisted the slavers instead. Of course, most of those were killed or enslaved themselves, for interfering with commerce (libertarians would understand). It was a choice for sea captains and sailors. Many of them declined to participate in the trade even though a single voyage could reap enough profit to retire. These were apparently the ones who took the talk of hellfire seriously. It was also a choice for planters who bought the slaves, since the great majority of farmers did not use slaves. It was a choice for the governments who protected it, since without the force of law slavery could not exist.
In fact it seems to have involved choices by everyone involved, except the slaves themselves.

Everything I’ve seen in the way Trump approaches criminal acts is that he acts in the manner of a mafia don: His underlings are expected to protect him, whether that is by paying off investigators/prosecutors, intimidating witnesses into silence, threats of expensive litigation to break contracts and business agreements, and even having them work with other criminal elements in order to spread his power and influence.

He is the kinda guy who is used to others making his problems “go away.” He figured that winning the election meant he could just add the DOJ to his list of “fixers.” Which is why he couldn’t believe Comey would not pledge loyalty to him, why Jefferson Beauregard would recuse himself rather than snuffing out any talk about Russia, and why Rosenstein would appoint Mueller when presented with the opportunity to put an end to any new investigations.
