On Sam Clovis in the last thread hitting the road, I wrote a letter to my local paper last year when he was first nominated as chief scientist for the USDA:

Clovis Not the Right Choice for Chief Scientist (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

September 13, 2017

President Trump has nominated right-wing radio host Sam Clovis to be chief scientist at the USDA. Mr. Clovis has no education in either agriculture or science.

The Democratic Party has called on Mr. Trump to withdraw Mr. Clovis’s nomination, because he is wildly unqualified for the position.

Anyone who works in agriculture should be concerned about such a person in that position, regardless of political leanings. Our senators should come out against Mr. Clovis, as Nebraska needs qualified people to support and oversee our state’s most important industry, not a radio conspiracy theorist.

Facebookk Wants to Let the Heritage Foundation Decide What’s News (goes to Wonkette - I’m glad I never signed up for Facebook):

Yesterday, Axios reported that Facebook was reaching out to some groups in an effort to keep the social media giant from hemorrhaging any more trust, by which we mean money. Worried that they might be the catalyst for degrading public discourse, and to make it seem like Mark Zuckerberg actually gives a fuck, Facebook is bringing in a super powerful law firm and … the Heritage Foundation.

Facebook will be holding a conservative-only bias review led by former Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl. Kyl has a famously loose interpretation of “facts,” once questioning the definition of middle class, and walking back lies about Planned Parenthood made on the Senate floor by saying his comment was “not intended to be a factual statement.”

Klon Kitchen, the Heritage Foundation’s resident right-leaning techie, has already been brought in to lecture Facebook on how to make safe spaces for conservatives on the Internet. Kitchen told USA Today that conservatives deserve to be treated just like every other asshole on the internet (please, don’t send him dick pics or death threats).

LOL on this part:

And now the Heritage Foundation will be investigating “bias” at Facebook, for Facebook. Sure, our post-truth nation got its kickstart when Facebook kowtowed to Republicans who were mad at its “bias” because the humans who worked there made sure Facebook’s “trending topics” weren’t all Gateway Pundit blowing a goat. So Facebook fired the humans who worked there who kept pointing out Gateway Pundit had a mouth full of goat dick. Get ready to like and share Hillary Clinton murdered Seth Rich with a pizza child sex slave, because you’re about to get Gateway Pundit’s sloppy mouth seconds, again.

On the other hand, they saw a weakness in our system and exploited it, cannot blame them for acting in their own self-interest. Unfortunately, we put ourselves into a state where we were vulnerable.

Now they have a hapless, floundering America, lacking in ambassadors and State Department appointees, hardly able to do anything internationally because we are so racked with internal investigations and scandals.

We Probed Sexual Misconduct Claims Against Journalist Al Giordano. Here’s What We Found. (Huffington Post, more after the lede):

Veteran journalist and liberal activist Al Giordano sexually harassed at least three younger women who attended his School of Authentic Journalism and threatened to cut off people who crossed him from the school’s community, four women and one man who attended the school told HuffPost.

In a letter from his lawyer, Giordano, 58, denied any allegations of sexual harassment.

Giordano, who attracted national attention as a critic of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders during the 2016 election, has been a journalist, activist and commentator in liberal circles for decades. He came up in the anti-nuclear movement in the 1980s, worked for various newspapers and magazines, and launched the newsletter Narco News Bulletin in 2000. An American, he has lived for years in Mexico City.

But it’s his School of Authentic Journalism, which Giordano created in 2002 to teach others how to cover social movements, that lies at the heart of the misconduct allegations.

Not to minimize the loss, but long time residents know that they live on the down slope of an active volcano. There have been earthquake warnings for several weeks that the eruption was coming. Many people live in modular homes. They disconnect the utilities and have their homes hauled to safer areas.

Kilauea isn’t an explosive volcano like Mount St. Helens. The lava occasionally surges, but usually moves relatively slowly.

Aaaaaand, another Republican in trouble for sexual harassment, this time in Colorado.

Regional: Colorado State Senator Accused of Misconduct is Sanctioned (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link):

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado Republican state senator has been removed from his committee assignments amid new allegations of sexual and workplace harassment.

Sen. Randy Baumgardner, who represents rural northwestern Colorado, was punished after an independent investigator found credible claims by eight people that he created a hostile work environment during the 2016 session.

KUNC-FM first reported the claims and punishment along with earlier allegations that Baumgardner had groped a former legislative aide during the same session. That case led to a failed Senate vote to expel him on April 2.

Senate President Kevin Grantham announced the decision about Baumgardner’s committee assignments in a letter released Thursday.

“It’s never pleasant meting out punishments of this sort to colleagues, but the three of us who were tasked with making this decision are comfortable that it was justified in this case,” Grantham said, referring to Senate Majority Leader Chris Holbert and Democratic Minority Leader Leroy Garcia.

Speaking of sex scandals:

Nobel Prize for Literature delayed amid Swedish Academy ‘sex assault’ scandal (BBC)

The organisation that decides the Nobel Prize for Literature has said it will not announce an award this year, after it was engulfed in a scandal over sexual assault allegations.

The Swedish Academy has been in crisis over its handling of allegations against the husband of a member.

She has since quit, as have the academy’s head and four other members.

The academy says it will now announce the 2018 winner along with the 2019 winner next year.

The scandal is the biggest to hit the prize since it was first awarded in 1901.

Apart from six years during the world wars, there has been only one year when the prize was not awarded. No worthy winner was found in 1935.

This year’s other Nobel prizes will go ahead as usual.

I wish I ran into in real life someone who was convinced the Bible’s Armageddon or Nibiru or something was going to happen on “this date.”

I’d be all for taking everything I have in savings and say “I’ll tell you what. I’ll give you all my savings (I’ll even throw in a dozen or so twenty dollar gold pieces) for your house. We get a lawyer and draw up a land contract. If we’re all gonna be killed anyway, you get to blow all my money before we go. If on the next day we’re still all here, I get your house.”

See how many take up the idea… .

Star Forts were built over the bodies of fossilized giants to best utilize the natural tunnels they provide. The God part of Creation uses Geometry and is was copied in parts of the Star Forts with perhaps some of the wall being utilized.

Fun fact.
The 6th Infantry Division (during the late 80’s early 90’s) brigades used to construct giant 6-pointed star defensive perimeters around their brigade support areas when in the field. I am relatively sure (S) the design was not inspired by fossilized giant’s bones. But from their divisional insignia

And yes, we used to refer to 6th ID’s airborne units as the “Jumpin’ Jews” (they did not appreciate it)

Generally speaking, in terms of markets, they like a certain amount of good numbers concerning unemployment, but when unemployment is too low, that means that employers have to fight for new hires (more money, benefits, etc.) which markets don’t really like because that means less profits.

Shorter Rudy: Waaaaaaah.

President Trump’s new personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani — who made news Wednesday night when he said Mr. Trump repaid lawyer Michael Cohen for the $130,000 payment Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels — told CBS News he wants the Justice Department to close down the Russia investigation.

“I want the Justice Department to close this thing down,” Giuliani told CBS News’ chief White House correspondent Major Garrett. “They (special counsel Mueller and team) don’t have a scintilla of evidence that there was collusion with the Russians to influence the election. This is a ridiculous investigation.”

Like Giuliani, Mr. Trump has continued to decry the special counsel’s investigation into Russian election meddling and any connections to the Trump campaign. Asked if there is any evidence of a conspiracy with the Russians, Giuliani responded, “I would say none.” Giuliani said there was “never any kind of agreement between Mr. Trump and the Russians to affect the election.”

Despite his criticism of the investigation, Giuliani didn’t rule out the possibility of a Trump-Mueller interview.

“I’m still open to it if we get the right conditions,” Giuliani said. “There’s no better way to end this. I joined this team with a goal of finishing this damn thing in a month or two. I don’t know if I can do that anymore in good conscience.”

Narrator voice: Actually, Rudy said ‘a week or two.’

Also, Rudy seems to think that Trump gets to call the shots in this thing. That ain’t how this works, old man. Didn’t you used to be a lawyer?

All your posts have convinced me to never go to Lubbock.

I don’t think you understand. Lubbuttock is, by definition, pretty much the definition of a municipal “Teachable Moment”.

Everyone should go there, once, for the “aha” factor.

Or Abilene. Don’t forget Abilene. Or Odessa. Or Midland. Or Abilene. Or Tyler. Or Amarillo.

It’s the victory of strip malls in urban architecture. With Pentecostal churches as tenants. It’s an awesome thing to see.

Once. Then you skedaddle back to Austin, get into a fetal position and thank your lucky stars that you don’t live anywhere else in this benighted State.

Don’t get me wrong! There are certainly areas, neighborhoods, within the Lone Star State that are are perfectly livable and fine, with lovely people and sane attitudes. But as noted in the local Friday Fishwrap that is the Austin American Statesman, Texans got their panties in a wad in 2015 over Jade Helm, a military exercise, after the Russians tested their Bot-net to see just how gullible Americans were to a disinformation campaign.

Egged on by Alex Jones, the Governor and the Light Governor bought into the scam, which included the rumor that basements of closed Wal-Marts would be used as prisons for gun-loving Americans.

Alex lived in the Zip code south of me for years, so Austin is not necessarily the Utopia that I like to paint. We all have our zits.

Also, Rudy seems to think that Trump gets to call the shots in this thing. That ain’t how this works, old man. Didn’t you used to be a lawyer?

How does Rudy know Mueller doesn’t “have a scintilla of evidence that there was collusion?”

Simple answer. He does not.

Where does he come up with the thinking? Probably told by Trump there is no collusion and since they are best buds he believes Donny. So he goes out in a mad rage to shut this down. Yeah right.

And, it is all stated to fire up the base to help keep them angry at the investigation and to keep the pressure on it all politically.

I saw this in the news this morning:

Massachusetts State Police are investigating a bizarre incident involving a school bus and an irate driver.

The incident was caught on the bus’s dashcam.

The video shows a driver come to a complete stop in the center lane of the highway, forcing the bus behind him to a halt. The driver gets out of his car and walks to the bus door.

Joe Rizoli, the bus driver, doesn’t let him in, so the man goes to the front of the bus and jumps on the hood.

Rizoli said the man was screaming that the windows on the bus were too dark.

“His words were, ‘Why are your windows dark?’” Rizoli said.

State Police said they’ve identified the man who climbed on the hood. No charges have been filed at this time.

Go watch the video. It’s bizarre.

A parsec is 3.261563777 light years to be precise. Though why they’re using the Earth’s year or the angle subtended by the semimajor axis of its orbit “long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away” remains unexplained.

If you watch the moves really closely, you’ll notice they’re dubbed into English.

This should be good.

Rudy’s going to completely change everything he said to align with Trump’s version, I’m betting.

It’ll be interesting to see if he gets called out on it. And I’m willing to bet that this is the end of Rudy’s TV appearances for a while.

What will be interesting is not the walk-back, but the language he uses to do so.

That the judge suddenly blurts out that he thinks that Mueller is using Manafort’s case to “get at” Trump and orders him to turn over an undedacted version of the very document the GOP are trying to get their hands on…

That he was appointed by Obama means nothing if he has a “MAGA” hat at home. I’m curious to see where this goes, but I’m sure that Paulie’s lawyers are feeling hopeful this afternoon. Even if the judge gives Mueller the green light, today shows he might be sympathetic to the defense.

By the way - this judge is not an Obama appointee.

Ellis was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on July 1, 1987, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia vacated by Judge Robert R. Merhige Jr.. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 5, 1987, and received his commission on August 6, 1987. He took senior status on April 1, 2007.[1] He continues to hear cases in the Eastern District of Virginia, and also has been empowered to hear cases in the Western District of Virginia. Ellis has issued over 1,000 published decisions during his tenure. Ellis also occasionally sits by designation on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

That funny smell just got a lot stronger.

Still, the fact that he wants the unredacted version of the document leaves me feeling uneasy, particularly because (IIRC) he’ll have to provide a copy to the defense as well, lest he chance the verdict of this trial being overturned on appeal.

According to Wikipedia:

In August 1994, Kenneth Starr[30] was appointed by a three-judge panel to continue the Whitewater investigation, replacing Robert B. Fiske, who had been specially appointed by the attorney general, prior to the re-enactment of the Independent Counsel law. Fiske was replaced because he had been chosen and appointed by Janet Reno, Clinton’s attorney general, creating a conflict of interest.

He is clearly totally compromised.

I think y’all are overreacting. For now it just looks to me like the Judge is covering his own ass in a highly politicized environment and helping without appearing to be helping. He wouldn’t be doing Mueller’s team any favors by appearing to be a pushover and his questioning got the August 2017 Rosenstein letter and authority to specifically target Manafort for banking ties to Russia discussed in open court.

At that time, I was a passenger in a car with 3 other graduate students — a woman from Great Britain, a man from Taiwan, and the driver, an Israeli — traveling from Chicago to Chapel Hill for a several day conference at the university. Oh, I know, a buddy of mine in the AF was a Kent State grad.

He mentioned that most of the students who went there were Cleveland area kids who commuted from home. He added that the fact that they were killed by similarly aged local area National Guard kids shocked Ohioans to the core. That classic picture was taken, if I recall, over 150 yards from the soldiers. Just a passer-by walking to class.

Tragic and senseless.

I was only 9 at the time but remember hearing about it. Kent is only about an hour drive from me. I listen to Kent State NPR radio (WKSU) broadcast every morning on way to work. I also worked with a woman in Houston that was on campus when the shooting occurred. She said she was on the other side of campus but word spread quickly.

The problem isn’t that we shouldn’t try to understand them: it’s that so many demand that we understand them, at the absolute exclusion of the rest of the Dem base, with the underlying implication that ‘these are literally the only voters that matter, and if you go after anyone else, you hate ‘Real America’ and deserve to be destroyed’.

I understand them just fine.

I was at Ohio State, and we had our own contingent of National Guard on campus. I was a smart aleck (and I had lost my student ID and was using my roommate’s most days), but fortunately, I knew most of the Guard guys, so I didn’t get hassled (or shot.)
