A Cranky One  May 6, 2018 • 12:48:08pm

So I was on a conference call the other day and there were multiple folks with the same first name, causing a bit of confusion.

I suggested we could reduce the confusion by referring to one person as good looking Bob (name changed to protect the innocent), one as handsome Bob and one as drop dead gorgeous Bob. One of the Bob’s immediately claimed the title of drop dead gorgeous Bob. When asked to justify that claim, he said “Well, when I was dating all the women called me the diminutive form of that name, i.e. “Drop dead”.

He won the argument.

but I’m seeing a little bit of where some men are coming from who constantly see women screwing every other guy and bragging about it but won’t engage with the guy that really truly wants to have a legit sexual encounter

slut = a girl who fucks every guy except you

I will admit, I have been in the situation of having been chatting up a woman all night, thinking we were hitting it off, going to get her a drink at last call and then seeing her float out the door with some guy who shows up at the end of the night and winks at her…

some fellows have that magical ability, I never did

I had a roommate who was like that: he had no trouble pulling chicks, his problems came in trying to get rid of them afterwards…

for that, I have broken a few hearts of a few women who wanted me but did just not do anything for me, and I am not one for fucking someone I am not interested in for the sake of sex

On the eighth anniversary of the worst American mine disaster in half a century, Don Blankenship was camped out at a diner in Elizabeth, West Virginia, explaining to an audience of two why his recently completed stint in federal prison made him more appealing to voters.

The trip to B-Bopp, a ’40s-themed joint about the length of a Mack truck, had been advertised as a chance to throw questions at the man whose campaign for US Senate has thrown Republican operatives into crisis mode. But only a pair of white-haired men had stuck around for lunch with Blankenship and his entourage. “We was told we come down here, we’re gonna eat,” said one of them, a bespectacled activist with a Trump hat and a prospector beard.

Offer of free food and only a couple of old-fart trumpsters showed up?

Quite the “surging” happening…

I regret I only have one upding to give for my country, etc.

In thinking about this I realized I know someone who would fall in the incel category. A friend of my best friend.

He’s angry. Just angry at women. The ones who have been interested were not attractive enough. But only a swimsuit model is attractive enough.

He thinks he is entitled to a female that meets his standards.

He is not attractive in looks, but more than that, his sarcasm, contempt, and anger are very offputting. Many women look past a man’s looks. But you can’t look past something like that. He oozes it.

He has no clue how to talk to a woman, none. He managed to pull off a conversation with me because I’m married, but even then he couldn’t look me in the eye.

My friend has suggested he try online dating. “Only losers do that.” He’s had one girlfriend, in college, that left him. We are now 45 years old.

This is the kind of man that would identify with that group. He may not be in it but he definitely has it down.

I don’t think sex is the main motivation. Being able to capture and control access is.

Those of us in the real world want consent, if not actual attraction.

Incel-ism is a tepid whiny ‘well, actually’ strain of PUA culture.

I read a very interesting op-ed today about Ross Douthat’s opinion piece in the NY Times.

She makes the case that the incel narrative isn’t really about having sex, or lack thereof, as such. The “sexual hierarchy” is really about social values. As a gay man, I can understand this line of argument.

Being at the bottom of a sexual hierarchy does not mean you don’t have sex.

This is another point that should be obvious but has, apparently, been lost in the vacuous prattle that followed the Toronto killings. Society has hegemonic norms, but people violate them constantly and form microcultures. As an autistic transgender woman with non-white features, I’m certainly on the “wrong” side of a few beauty hierarchies in this society and I pay a price for that; I still have sex and two very committed partners with whom I share very deep connections.

Sexual hierarchies can be fluid and micrological. In some communities, they may even be reversed outright. This doesn’t even begin to grapple with how your individual notions of attractiveness, honed over the years by uniquely personal experiences, may affect things. Hierarchies of desirability do have an impact, but not necessarily on the practical outcome of whether or not you have sex. It may affect your ability to feel sexy, and hurt your self-esteem of course; goddess knows I’ve been there. But that’s less about your ability to have sex, than it is how you feel about yourself and what struggles emerge from that. Through it all, people from every position on the “hierarchy” still manage to frequently find meaningful and exciting relationships.

Even a casual glance in your own social circles will reveal many happily bonded people who, in one way or another, are considered socially undesirable or “unattractive” by the ruthless metrics of conventional beauty standards. Meanwhile, our media is saturated with the image of “unattractive” men who are loved deeply by conventionally attractive women; it’s the conceit of a dozen and one sitcoms and it does reflect a partial reality where men who look like, say, Kevin James are quite capable of finding loving relationships. (I say “partial” because, naturally, it fails to reflect what life is like for women of all shapes and sizes.)

In short…

Sexual hierarchies aren’t really about sex.

They’re wired in to all manner of socio-economic and political mores, certainly, but bear only a passing relationship to your actual ability to find dates and slap your genitals against someone else’s. Rather, they are norms about social value which determine other aspects of your reality that are untethered to your sex life. For women, those who are seen as conventionally attractive will have to endure constant imprecations about their careers — ”is she sleeping her way to the top?” will haunt her every step, and her beauty will be taken as blanket consent for everything from drawing porn of her against her will to dismissing her point of view to undervaluing her accomplishments.

Conventionally “unattractive” women, meanwhile, will be ruthlessly mocked and derided by men (including incels — just look at what they say about women they deem undesirable, impervious to irony as reactionary bigots often must be). Such women may be ignored outright or deemed unworthy of making even professional connections with, seen as uncharismatic, unhealthy, or shamed for what they look like.

This is all, indeed, a function of the sexual hierarchy; but it’s markedly unrelated to one’s sex life as such. Which brings me to the final point…

Sex will not cure these extremists.

More here…

“alpha male” simply describes the position a creature occupies in the hierarchy, it is not determinative in nature. In fact, lower-ranking males have been observed advantage of alphas fighting each other for dominance to gain access to females…

His base doesn’t care about anything he does because they filter everything through the RW prism. They will justify any action he takes because they are all true believers. They literally do not care if he actually conspired with Russia, laundered money for the Russian mob, or shot someone on 5th avenue. As long as the RW media support him, they will continue to worship him.

I cannot tell you how many times my brother has denied that Trump was mocking the disabled reporter; what he sees is very different from what any objective observer would see.

This incel movement is probably the best example yet of the internet’s ability to empower fringe dwellers and isolated crazy people. People who used to harangue passers by in the public parks or mutter to themselves as they walked down the street can now make contact with the like-minded and empower themselves through the exchange of ideas and through collective advocacy.

These guys, dangerously frustrated woman-haters, have have always existed but except for the occasional sex crimes trial, their ideas and attitudes never saw the light of day. We have seen this with flat Earthers, Moon landing denialists, Walmart tunnel* spotters, and conspiracy proponents of every sort. These ideas have been around a long time, but their exposure was limited by the professional media. The latter, in their admittedly imperfect and sometimes deficient way, served as gatekeepers for consensus reality. If Time or CBS News thought you were a crank, you were consigned to the Outer Darkness or mocked in a light-hearted human interest story. Now though, CBS and Time don’t matter at all, the reality challenged crazies are the mainstream.

Trump’s election, and the conspiracist right’s reflexive, visceral hatred of professional media, are obviously connected with this trend.

Worth bearing in mind when reflecting on loyalty of DJT support:
- In 1932, in teeth of Great Depression, with discredited Herbert Hoover running against ascendant FDR, Hoover still got FORTY PERCENT of the popular vote!
There is, and always has been, such a thing as “the base.”

Hoover was a good man who erred in the response to the economic catastrophe he was facing. He saved millions from starvation in Russia; he was a real hero. There is no comparison between Hoover and Trump.

It’s much worse than that. We’re talking about it because one of them went on a murder spree and is being hailed for it by many in that group. Then too many in the media ran with it and tried to paint it with enough credibility to justify their bullshit columns. It’s dangerous and violent and should always be identified as such.

Do you mean he tells you what he sees?

Because I think people see the bad in an action, but accept it because there is a benefit. You get to rile up a lefty, you get to protect your guy and maybe you like the bad action because you would do it too. Screw that disabled reporter.

You have to turn a blind eye. But that doesn’t mean you didn’t see it. It means you are willfully deciding to deny what you saw, turn away from it and build your own vision.

Which is exactly what Trump is doing too. He has been all along. He ran his campaign that way. He ‘governs’ that way and he covers his ass on everything the same way too.

You did not see that. Fake News. Alternative Facts. Deep State!

exactly. he was a tried-and-true public servant, but his ideas and methods of dealing with the crisis were outdated and ineffective.

Also: by most objective historical analysis, Hoover DID eventually come to grasp the dimensions of the Great Depression, and realize what had to be done to (at least try) to ameliorate it, but found himself a prisoner of:
1) a non-interventionist laissez-faire mentality that he could neither totally junk or adequately side-step, and (more importantly)
2) a Republican-dominated Congress that studiously and determinedly attempted to ignore or minimize the economic crisis swallowing up the country, and flatly rejected Hoover’s (or anyone else’s) proposals for government action to try to help the nation out.
3) the incredible bad press from siccing Regular troops on the Bonus Army in the summer of 1932.

Of course, Hoover’s post-Presidential career wasn’t helped by the fact that he became a near-fanatical opponent of Roosevelt and the New Deal, and cemented his reputation as a bitter old reactionary.

Hey — that’s the line my brother was spouting yesterday!! Especially after my calling Robert E Lee a traitor. He prefaced it by saying how many Americans were killed during the war — and also how many shootings there were in Chicago. I’m not sure but he may have come around to believing that African Americans were better off in slavery. There remains something toxic in the states that were part of the confederacy. It can poison the minds of others who should know better.

This would have been water under the bridge had Trump accepted the NDA (sorry, don’t remember the correct terminology here).

The Trump team still has the same mindset as before becoming a politician. They still think that they can bluff their way out of situations. That can work when dealing with people who can or have to stay quiet, especially if there are bigger fish to catch.

I cooked in a restaurant that this prick visited from time to time. His order was always the same and specific: the hamburger should barely touch the griddle for a couple of seconds on each side and must never come into contact with onions. The first time I cooked for him I read the order and couldn’t believe it, so I let the burger sit for about 30 seconds per side. Not soon after, the waitress came back with the order crying. He had berated her for my mistake and had poured water on the floor in anger. I give you former Illinois representative Tim Johnson.

One of my life’s proudest moments (though I certainly didn’t entirely appreciate that at the time) was when I was a server at a Big Boy restaurant when I was in college. It was like 1am, had a table of about 8 drunk people and one guy in the party was a supreme asshole. By the time I had gotten their orders he had insulted me several times, tried to pinch my tit, and slapped my ass as I walked away. When their order was up, I served everyone at the table as usual, planting his order in front of him in a To Go bag. Everyone (but him) at the table laughed their asses off. He flew into a rage and demanded to see the manager, screaming that he would see me fired. The manager’s response: LOLno yer outa here.

So, MrBWS is up in Michigan restoring power.
He called yesterday and said they were in Port Huron Township where there was no cast iron skillet fried chicken, ice cream or blueberry pie.

He had major sadz.

Sorry, us northerners aren’t exactly known for our fabulous cuisine. Unless you’re into hotdish and lutefisk, that is.

yeah…VB’s power went out Friday, but the blueberry pie was already baked.
However, dinner had to be cast iron skillet fried chicken.
Then, as she was relaxing on the porch using the free outdoor wifi she remembered there was a LOT of ice cream in the garage freezer.

Thus the offer made to MrBWS.

Is volcano insurance available to those homeowners in the volcano zones? Since I live on top of the Pacific Rim I have earthquake coverage for my home. It’s a few hundred dollars per year and has a 20% deductible but I think it’s worth it.

Reminds me of the time I was at Cassell’s Burgers here in Los Angeles when Mr. Cassell was still running it. John Travolta came in, ordered a burger, took it to the buffet table and dabbed Roquefort dressing on it, took a bite and then loudly complained about the burger not being filet mignon.

He demanded another burger. Mr Cassell fried it himself. Travolta wanted it well done. Travolta once again dabbed the roquefort on the burger, took a bite and whined again that it wasn’t well done.

Mr. Cassell pointed to the door and told Travolta to get his sleazy ass out of his place.

No doubt Johnny fled to the $¢ientology ¢elebrity ¢enter for another OT Rundown to recover from the thetan-infested burgers…

Heh. When I was on the line at the steakhouse, we’d have this guy come in every week. He’d order the 64 oz. tomahawk Ribeye. “11 seconds on each side.” he’d demand. He was never a dick if it went for 12 seconds, but he had sent a few back over the years. Some people, man.

You should send that in to C.A. Pinkham at Off The Menu.

WHOOOT! Good History being Made!

Under Pressure, Tronc Recognizes ‘Chicago Tribune’ Union

The troubled Tronc media company agreed Sunday evening to recognize unions to represent journalists in negotiations at its Chicago-area publications, including its iconic Chicago Tribune, heading off a looming confrontation involving federal regulators, NPR has learned.

It is a notable reversal for Tronc, historically known in various corporate iterations for its hostility to organized labor.

Tronc struck a conciliatory tone in a statement to NPR Sunday night, saying that it looked forward to productive conversations with union representatives.

“As we move ahead, we need to be united as one organization with an important purpose — to help the company transform and thrive as a business, and to serve our readers world class journalism,” the statement read.

This is the second time in four months that a major Tronc newsroom has successfully gone the union route.

In January, Tronc was badly defeated in a federally overseen labor vote at its dominant paper, The Los Angeles Times, despite a concerted management campaign to thwart the unionizing effort.

Both the Chicago and Los Angeles papers have anti-union editorial traditions stretching back more than a century. Now, both will have unions.

This is the most lovely & important Union news in ages.

Pic from today’s ride. We’re ju-u-ust past the peak of Spring green.

I can hit 35mph, just coasting!
