Those exaggerated dance moves Donald Glover is making? They’re straight from 19th century Jim Crow minstrel shows.

Make sure you watch it two or three times. After the first, ignore what Glover is doing and instead pay attention to the stuff in the background he’s distracting you from (on purpose).

When I was a kid, the first time I encountered a minstrel show was listening to Bill Cullen recreating one on NBC Monitor. Next came watching Holiday Inn with my family when I was 5 and I was trying to figure out why Bing Crosby was in blackface.

DIdn’t connect it with the fact that my home town of Ambridge PA was racially segregated. African Americans were “asked” not to come to the borough pool. Stores and various clubs (Eagles, IOOF, PNA, Moose) were “restricted” any certain people weren’t allowed to enter. It wasn’t just involving African-Americans. Jews were not welcome at the J C Penney’s in our town. They had to go to the Sears store 2 blocks away…

To show how backwards we were, our then-Congressman Frank Clark was 1 of the 2 Northern Democrats who voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. After it passed there was a backlash that eventually pulled blue collar workers to George Wallace and eventually Reagan.

It was the summer of 64 that my eyes opened and I started seeing the backlash to civil rights. Then I realized what a wrong had been done.

Now it really hurts to see this country backsliding with the encouragement of the racist in the White House.

From the story:

Rhodes said that the campaign represented a troubling situation in which public servants were being targeted for their work in government. “This just eviscerates any norm of how governments should operate or treat their predecessors and their families,” he said. “It crosses a dangerous line.”

I’m on the other side of the island in the resort area.

Residential areas in that part of the island do have a rating for lava and it does impact home owner’s insurance. Some insurers won’t insure Lava Zone 1 or 2. This makes the land very cheap and a lot of people build ‘off grid’ there.

I love to rent a house in Kapoho near the Champagne Ponds. We stayed at the the raised house at the beginning of this video over Christmas. Some of the homes have small salt water pools in the back yard, 4-5 feet deep. You can feel geothermal warmed water come up through the rocks. If you’re still the little fishes will come nibble your feet.

I do love that area. I drove from Pahoa town out to Kalapana then took the road along the coast back to Kapoho. I’ve thought of retiring out their but not sure if the wife would like it. But land is stupid cheap. You just have to prepare for Madame Pele and be willing to live marginal grid/off grid.

I mentioned above about my first exposure to minstrel shows was the segment Bill Cullen did on NBC Monitor radio in the late 50s or early 60s. Googled to see if there was anything on the net and it looks like an album transcribed from that broadcast is on You Tube.

I remember hearing this as a kid. the Monitor Beep Beep Beeps were between each number…

I have to walk back my Connick comment a bit, because looking at their schedule (Jazz Fest just ended yesterday), I see a whole lot of jazz and R&B artists in the schedule (many of them local acts you wouldn’t have ever known about unless you’re a either a NO/LA native or a total jazzhead), along with just as many acts from other genres (mostly pop and rock, but some rap/hip-hop and others, too). For seven full days of music over two weekends in several venues, it was a helluva roster:

The place was not for want for jazz at all from what I see, but there was something for everyone, it seems.

No doubt. They usually have a really great slate of artists. I’ve heard it can be hard to profit off music festivals so I understand them pursuing big headliner dollars. But I also understand folks reacting to it looking for the jazz theme to be especially highlighted by the headlining acts.

Jazz Fest has always had it’s most exciting acts in the smaller stages and tents. Big acts attract the crowds, but many of the best acts are in smaller venues within the festival.

I’ve been to twelve of them, starting in ‘75. Rollicking good fun.

I have to admit, there’d be no way NO could put on the Jazz Fest as it currently is with only jazz (and R&B) acts; jazz, for many, is an acquired taste, while pop and rock is still more mainstream.

While they had the big headliners, the artists and bands everyone knows (Aerosmith, Steve Miller, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Buffett, Beck, Rod Stewart, Sting, Lionel Richie, and on and on), there were always jazz artists playing somewhere in the other venues, so I suppose the more famous non-jazz artists could serve as a gateway to people getting exposed to jazz.

Science says you shouldn’t sleep next to your dog

If you really love dogs, you treat them like dogs, that is, like a member of your pack, and not as a member of the family. They are happier that way, although we has humans often have trouble seeing like that.

And that means that you do not let them onto your furniture.

Just like you should never feed them before you eat, you should never let them go through a door first, and when you come home, you should ignore them at first and then initiate contact.

To do the latter is cruel if you do it to your children and life-threatening if you do it to your wife, but it is how you are supposed to treat your dog.

Maybe ‘Cocaine Mitch’ has legs.

Chao’s interviews with father raise ethical flags

In at least a dozen interviews with Chinese and Chinese-American media outlets since her nomination, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has appeared beside her shipping magnate father, whose company carries goods between the United States and Asia, and who has given Chao and her husband at least $5 million in the past 10 years.

In many of the videos, James Chao is introduced as founder and chairman of the Foremost Group shipping company, and, in discussing a 2016 biography about his life, speaks proudly of his daughter’s role as secretary of transportation, as she sits beaming by his side.

One interview with New China Press published on April 12, 2017, features the pair sitting in what appears to be the Department of Transportation, with DOT flags in view behind the interviewer. .

Honestly, the whole thing sounds like Rudy believes in Trump takes ownership of his crimes, then people will just shrug their shoulders and move on because “That’s just who Trump is.”

There seem to be lots of reasons for this, part of it is that Trump has been slow to nominate people, the Senate has changed rules making it easier to block nominees and the Democrats are using those rules to pay the GOP back for obstructing Merrick Garland for SCOTUS under Obama.

Result is the same, though: we are at a diplomatic disadvantage.

Morning!

I see all the crazy tweets and I am wondering if Donny is getting some bad news from his lawyers about what is really going on with Mueller and he is in a mad rush to see if he can help the GOP kill the investigation before whatever may be coming is announced.

Or, is he trying to swing everyone’s eyes back to Mueller and the Russian investigations because he realizes Cohen and Stormy are now a huge problem. Maybe he realized he went too far with Rudy and his own story changing and when he gets some flak Fox people he knows he screwed up and its bad.

Regarding the tweets themselves, they have some Trump traits, but they also seem to have details he never used before. Is someone now in charge of cleanup and review? Maybe he has a new Twitter Editor in Chief.

I can’t remember who said it yesterday, but it was stated that he really has the entire White House and Administration staff all lost as to what the hell is going on and if they are even needed because he goes around and over them to work with his buddies like Rudy, Lewandowski, etc.

I hope all the mess gives someone the courage to start talking about what they know.

I agree with The Don about one thing. I hope it all gets resolved by November…and Trump is on his way out.

Sorry, but this is nonsense. Not the part about establishing that you’re the alpha, but the specifics, like furniture and such. I spent a lot of time in our Golden’s adolescence establishing myself as alpha, and never had an issue with it later. And Rhyo was a couch and bed dog, who initiated contact, because he was a Golden Retriever and that’s what they do. Dogs get fed at dog feeding time. People eat when people eat.

Learn the 3 voices and use them properly; keep commands short and consistent; never let them win tug-of-war, never let a command go unheeded - which includes, early on, never giving a command you can’t enforce; decide what behavior is unacceptable and never accept it.

The ‘being the alpha’ part is absolutely true. This is why so many little dogs (what we call ‘Snack Dogs’) are such terrors - their owners don’t establish dominance. They think they don’t have to, and they end up with a dog that snarls and barks at everyone. But if you like big dogs, and I do, you make sure they know who’s boss. 80# of pure muscle and teeth acting like that would be A Bad Thing.

911 needs to start asking what the caller’s skin color is. “White? Are you sure you don’t mean thin?”

911 Dispatcher: “OK….now I’m gonna ask, what’s your skin color?”

Caller: “I’m white.”

911 Dispatcher: “That’s kinda what I thought. Now, y’all need to calm the fuck down. Let’s go over the situation again….”

I somehow imagine that the woman did not call 911 to report what she thought was “suspicious behavior”, I suspect she immediately reported a “burglary in progress”…but again, I cannot begin to understand why the police decided that a massive show of force was necessary without investigating the situation first

re: #184 Blind Frog Belly White

The ‘being the alpha’ part is absolutely true. This is why so many little dogs (what we call ‘Snack Dogs’) are such terrors - their owners don’t establish dominance. They think they don’t have to, and they end up with a dog that snarls and barks at everyone. But if you like big dogs, and I do, you make sure they know who’s boss. 80# of pure muscle and teeth acting like that would be A Bad Thing.

I have a 27 pound terrier who will not break of his desire to eat any human that comes into the house, except for the people he knows live here, that he was introduced to when he arrived. He was an older shelter dog with a very iffy background. I am certain he was abused.

No matter what I do (and I would put myself just below expert in dog training), he will not break of that. He is better than he used to be, but he is always in a crate when anyone comes over.

And he knows that I am alpha in the house.

That lava is moving pretty fast (for lava). I am kinda surprised.

It’s a feature of the hot spot magma/lava that formed the islands. It’s generally very fluid, which is why you get large, broad shield like mountains instead of cones. This changes somewhat as the volcano gets shifted off the hot spot. The flows get a bit less fluid, so the character of the mountain changes a bit and you start to get a bit steeper slopes. Mauna Loa vs Mauna Kea sort of exemplifies this.

He is the sweetest dog to the three of us. He is empathetic to all the other dogs. If anyone is stressed out, Sam is the one to make sure we know about it. He loves to snuggle, get petted, play. He is never a bad dog. Ever.

Except that he likes to eat people.

Significantly, in order to obtain the records in this fashion, the FBI would have had to establish that there was probable cause to believe that they contained evidence of a crime. But one way or another, the authorities would know the real story about the Stormy Daniels payment, it’s purpose, and Trump’s involvement.

That changed everything.

Trump immediately began distancing himself from Cohen, describing him as “a businessman for his own account” and suggesting that if he testified against Trump, he would be just making things up.

It was during that appearance (Hannity) that Giuliani revealed, for the first time, that Trump had reimbursed Cohen for the payment in installments over the course of 2017. This directly contradicted what Cohen’s lawyer said in March.

Of course, that’s exactly what Giuliani was doing. But he is essentially trying to withdraw all his comments from the previous 48 hours.

What neither Giuliani nor Trump has clarified is what Trump knew and when he knew it. The old lies have been replaced by nothing.

Trump finds himself in a bind. Since the raid, lies are no longer an option. And the truth appears to be far too damaging to admit.

It’s also key to note that the Hawaiian volcanoes are about as nice as active volcanoes get. If you build a subdivision on their slopes or over top of their rifts, you run a significant risk of them covering the entire thing in lava some day, but in general, they aren’t going to instantly kill everything within 10+ miles with a pyroclastic flow.

Who is this Troubled Heart?

Here is a CNN article that explains him.

CNN - Who is Sam Nunberg?

First couple paragraphs to get you started:

Washington (CNN)Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg said in a CNN interview that he would refuse to appear before a federal grand jury after being subpoenaed in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

So, who exactly is Sam Nunberg, beyond a former adviser to President Donald Trump’s campaign team? Well, he’s a man who Trump has hired, fired, rehired, refired and then sued for $10 million.

….

I’ll be glad when the damn primary election in Ohio is over tomorrow. I am so sick of all the Republicans trying to be more pro-Trump, pro-Christian, Anti-immigrant, non-insider-deep-state and of course more conservative than the others.

At least we get a month or two before it all starts up again and the Democrats are on the receiving end.

I don’t ever remember such an eat-our-own style of political ads as this year. The GOP is really hitting itself in the eye. I hope this costs them as some people realize that party is not the GOP of even 10 years ago. And it sucked then too!
