It may just be reflexive cynicism (15 months of the Trump Administration will do that), but I get the feeling that the screaming and gnashing from wingers is just waiting in the wings, and will surface as soon* as Melania’s “initiative” gets anything less from the media than slavish admiration, adoration and praise (regardless of its actual content).

for melania:

The ballroom was filled with fashion’s throng,
It shone with a thousand lights;
And there was a woman who passed along,
The fairest of all the sights.
A girl to her lover then softly sighed,
“There’s riches at her command.”
“But she married for wealth, not for love,” he cried!
“Though she lives in a mansion grand.”

(chorus)
She’s only a bird in a gilded cage,
A beautiful sight to see.
You may think she’s happy and free from care,
She’s not, though she seems to be.
‘Tis sad when you think of her wasted life
For youth cannot mate with age;
And her beauty was sold for an old man’s gold,
She’s a bird in a gilded cage.

I stood in a churchyard just at eve,
When sunset adorned the west;
And looked at the people who’d come to grieve
For loved ones now laid at rest.
A tall marble monument marked the grave
Of one who’d been fashion’s queen;
And I thought, “She is happier here at rest,
Than to have people say when seen:

One of the many laughable moments of “Dante’s Peak” comes when Pierce Brosnan the Vulcanologist drives his trusty Chevy pickup through molten lava up to his hubs, and the gas tank doesn’t explode, exposed to temperatures well in excess of the autoignition temperature of gasoline.

Maybe most GOP members of Congress and the Senate are not very bright and have fallen for the official propaganda. I don’t think it’s much, or even anything.

I think today’s Republicans are like today’s Republican voters - they watch a lot of FOX, consume a lot of cult internet, and don’t need to be blackmailed to condone treason or crimes. They’re not condoning treason or crimes knowing that it’s wrong, but they feel they have to because of anything particular - they just don’t think they’re wrong. They believe that all things - naked treachery, open crimes, violence - are all okay as long as they hurt the ‘real villains’; ie. liberals, Democrats, foreigners. This now extends to the judicial institutions of the United States, because that’s how powerful the FOX cult is - it has convinced these people that the very institutions that protect them, that they once championed, are now their enemies. That’s why they don’t just hold their nose and support criminals - they actively support criminals, because they consider the law enforcement of the Federal Government their enemy.

It’s possible that FOX has sold this message deliberately on behalf of the Russians. I don’t know that. It certainly helps them.

I’ve had a really crappy day…so I am not caught up around here.

I just turned on Ari about 10 minutes ago and he had Sam Nunberg on. All I can say is this whole investigation appears to be heading for a real mess.

Nunberg is feeling awfully cocky since we last saw him. He seems to think that now that Ty Cobb is out as lawyer, Trump chose Rudy to start what Nunberg called a political street fight.

Nunberg seems to think the whole investigation is nothing but politics and nothing to do with laws. He said Mueller is a friend of Comey and it is all a political ploy to bring Trump down.

He didn’t talk like this a month ago. Someone gave him something to make him stronger on all this. He seemed resigned that Trump screwed up before.

Of course this is Nunberg, so nothing can be trusted as far as what the fool says. But I do believe he is a messenger for Trump.

214
Blind Frog Belly White  May 7, 2018 • 3:40:27pm

I’ve said this before, but I am increasingly convinced that if guns are ever outlawed in America it will be BECAUSE OF the actions of the NRA, not in spite of. You don’t choose Ollie North, a man convicted of a number of felonies involving flouting the rule of law, for any other reason than to scream “FUCK YOU!!” to the rest of America. Same thing with putting - and keeping - Ted Nugent on their BoD. Even before Trump was elected, gun laws were becoming more and more lax, and yet as they’ve expanded their rights the NRA insists gun owners are under siege like never before. They work hard to paint themselves as exactly the sort of people that should not be allowed a pocketknife, let alone a gun - paranoid, resentful, prone to threats of violence.

I’ve heard this theory a few times. It usually goes that if you go into a Democratic office, they’ll have multiple news papers, TV’s with multiple news feeds, and are generally willing to listen (or at least monitor) what various news agencies are saying. But on the GOP side, all the TV’s are tuned to FNC, and they’re more likely to be checking Brietbart than they are the Washington Post. It’s a sort of confirmation bias or epistemic closure and Trump, in a post-modern way, has taken full advantage of that (though I doubt he understands what post-modern thought is)

After what was done to Franken, I want to see solid proof before I’m going to believe accusations. There are plenty of people with very good reasons for wanting to see Schneiderman discredited.

And this is personal, because Schneiderman is MY AG, and the most effective occupant of that office in my memory. If he’s in the wrong, so be it - but I don’t want him going down just on anonymous accusations.

Yeah, my spidey sense was on high alert until I read it, but they have two of the women on record—both of whom were in long-term documented relationships with him, and they seem to have verified much supporting evidence.

This jumped out at me:

They allege that he repeatedly hit them, often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent. Manning Barish and Selvaratnam categorize the abuse he inflicted on them as “assault.

A violent drunk, it appears. That’s not to give him a pass, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out he has a problem with booze.

His denial is a classic non sequitur:

In a statement, Schneiderman said, “In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”

The entire focus of his statement is about sexual activity, but ignores that at least one woman simply rebuffed his advances. That’s got nothing to do with sexual activity, that’s just hitting someone.

It’s worth noting that McConnell announced they would not consider any nomination from Obama to replace Scalia before his body was even cold, and the GOP went along with it, including the NeverTrumpers. That tells you everything you need to know about the GOP and their pretense to respecting the Constitution, rule of law, and democracy.

It’s very simple. Trump will never, ever answer any questions, will refuse a subpoena, then plead the fifth when forced to go before the grand jury. Period. Trump is not going anywhere. He will not be impeached. Ever. If Mueller found irrefutable evidence that Trump was engaged in money laundering in his business, he will never be removed from office. Ever. This is why I hope part of Mueller’s investigation is looking very seriously into how exactly an arrest of a sitting president on criminal charges can be done. It is unacceptable to have the president literally be above the law if he can’t be impeached and removed from office by Congress.

This is all working off of the obvious assumption that there is clearly evidence of criminal wrongdoing:

I think he can be impeached, but I don’t know that he’d be convicted in the Senate. However, I do believe the trial in and of itself would be worth it. It would mean all of the evidence would be made public, it would be the A, B, and C block of every news program for as long as it went on. There would be no way for anyone to hide from the facts of his criminal activity. Maybe he gets bailed out by 34 Republican Senators, but if what we all think is there is actually there, those Republicans are going to go down in history in very bad ways (not to mention, their next election will be entirely about their impeachment vote).

And most importantly, I believe it would make his reelection chances in 2020, “zero” (as Giulliani would say).

I disagree. My observation is that the current speed of the news cycle is a two-edged sword. Nothing sticks in the mind anymore. Trump himself both gains and loses by new stories constantly pushing out the old ones. Every time he has a good day, it’s all gone by two days later.

Interesting mews on the Ohio race for Congress District 12 formerly held by Pat Tiberi. It has been in GOP hands for 18 years, held previously by John Kasich before Tiberi.

Since Tiberi announced he was resigning, it went to a special election. Tomorrow is the Ohio primaries. There are 10 GOP runners and 7 Democrats. It is a popular district with a good piece of it in Columbus’ northern parts of the city and suburbs.

A woman reporter (didn’t catch her name as I was out of the room) on Tweety Matthews’ show said Trump’s people and GOP leaders are worried one of the women candidates could win and be unelectable in the general election in November.

They seem to be worried she is bad enough she will get beat by a Democrat just like Roy Moore in Alabama.

I am not familiar with all the candidates, but I have a feeling it is Melanie Leneghan. I don’t know much about her, but she is running many of the commercials I’ve mentioned are all about the GOP watch-words.

If this even has a chance to become a Democratic district I am amazed. I would never have guessed it is up for contention.

So, tomorrow I hope she wins the primary. She seems to have some big dollars backing her. I am going to have to do more reading on her. All I know is I don’t like her just based on the commercials. One of them posted below.

I feel like I’m trapped in the Harlan Ellison story “I have no mouth and I must scream”. Why are these men who are fighting for truth and justice so terribly flawed? Trump can get away with anything — but others, Democrats and (it appears) most Republicans are damaged beyond repair and forced out. Of course, as others have said, Al Franken was undeservedly forced out, but most of these politicians are guilty of the accusations.

I bet if Trump ever did testify, Mueller would just let him talk, while throwing in the odd encouragement. Then just spend the next week weeding through the transcript for all the perjury.

I assume he means Preet should run for office. Just looked it up, 2018 is the next election for A.G. Preet should run.

Not a great idea. Since Trump fired Preet he could reasonably be expected to recuse himself from any investigation of Trump, Trump’s family and possibly any Trump administration officials. The last thing the New York AG’s office needs is an air of revenge surrounding any investigations they undertake going forward.

A bit more to add to my #296.

Melanie Leneghan is from Powell Ohio, which just happens to be where I worked for 7 years. She was a Liberty Township trustee and wasn’t liked too much. She apparently was reprimanded for harassment for calling A Liberty Township female firefighter a “the token female on the squad.”

Also, she is being pushed by Freedumb Caucus asshole Jim Jordan the often-in-the-news Republican of Ohio District 4.

Apparently Tump and other GOPers are worried about her. Maybe they do not like Jordan, but that doesn’t make sense because he is doing everything he can to save Trump. This is weird. Gonna keep reading…

By all means, hold him accountable. The one thing I’ve noticed is almost no one is going to bat in defense for him over this, especially on our side. That’s admirable, but it still means we’re pretty much stuck in the woods again, and seeing the media’s gleeful Trump-fuckery makes me brace for the eventual ratfuck this November and 2020 all the more.

Yes it’s gonna suck for a minute or two. But the real play here is unhesitating enforcement of the rules. no matter who. Our side, their side, loved, hated, misunderstood or overplayed. Sooner or later that gets to Trump as long as we don’t flinch because “one of ours”. This is a terrible price to pay but it buys moral authority. And to hell with these guys that keep this crap up. Mueller has to find a way to arrest and try Trump for his crimes, or the investigation will almost certainly be for nothing. This is the long game of Republicans turning impeachment into a partisan farce vs. Bill Clinton. It was so that when a future Republican president (inevitably) needed to be impeached and removed from office, they could cover for him in Congress and get the media to accept a GOP narrative that any impeachment of a Republican president is just the Democrats trying to get even from the Bill Clinton impeachment.

Mr. Bragg also served as the Chief of Litigation and Investigations at the New York City Council and was in private practice at the firm now known as Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello P.C. Immediately after law school, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Robert P. Patterson, Jr., U.S. District Judge, Southern District of New York.
