I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: It is up to us to fix this country. Schneiderman and Mueller had and have particular roles to play, albeit more than the average person, but even if they win their part, it won’t fix anything. Some of the right people will get charged, which is very useful, but the only way we’re going to fix what is going wrong is to vote Republicans out of office and keep them out of office.

I’m pissed about Schneiderman, of course. But his staff will keep doing what they do. His replacement will be a Democrat. Whatever investigations are going on won’t stop.
That IS the rule of law in action, and my state still has a functioning government. Schneiderman resigning won’t change any of those facts.

I personally think we’re in a cold civil war right now, especially with 40% of the county either hoping we get a fascists-religious state or not caring if we do. I think we’re going to win ultimately, but we’re going to have setbacks. And, like in any war, sometimes people on your side do something that requires you to remove them from their job (think MacArthur and Korea). But there’s more than just that one person.

I watched the Childish Gambino video “This is America” and I read what people here had to say. In my opinion, and I could be wrong, the guy on the horse with the cop car following behind could be more than just Death with Hell following after. I thought it also had overtones of slave overseers on their horses, watching the slaves in the fields during antebellum times, followed by today’s version of the guys in cop cars watching over black communities with ill intent. Plus I thought Gambino was evoking slavery by being shirtless and at first glance, appearing barefoot. I think that was brought home by the end scene of Gambino running away from blurred pursuers.
Of course, I am only a middle-aged white woman who is not so experienced in reading symbols in videos not made for me (hello, Lemonade), so I could be completely wrong.

Good art does not have to have one meaning. It can mean different things to different people.
The artist may have one idea in mind when he created it, but then again he may even have wanted it to be open enough to illicit all kinds of thinking.

Eh, I don’t know. Unlike Franken, this news isn’t being driven by a few women who appear almost exclusively on FOX and then immediately disappear. While I don’t believe that the accusations are falsified, I do believe that someone may have let the White House know days in advance that this story was close to publication and that’s why they felt overly confident that their “salvation” lay in the courts.

As I was telling a wingnut earlier today, best case scenario for Manafort is that Mueller drops the charges…and the EDVA US Attorney immediately impanels a grand jury to file them there. The only other “good” scenario is that the case goes forward under Mueller, but the judge puts his views about the reach of his investigatory power on paper. It’ll give the wingnuts tingles in their nether regions that Mueller had his hand “slapped” by a judge, but it will mean Manafort is still stuck deciding between dying in prison or rolling on Don Trump.

That definitely makes sense. I was thinking about him considering the election in the sense of it figuring into how he moved forward and how quickly or not. In that sense I believe he just let’s the investigation proceed without any political calculus.

How about old enough to see a steam train. When I was in elementary school there were train tracks adjacent to the school playground. Of course, at that time, there were no safety fences. Steam locomotives used that section of track. Just being kids, when we heard a train coming, we would rush out and put pennies on the tracks to be crushed. Somewhere I still have one of these pennies.
Childhood was so much fun in those days.
I live between two railroad tracks. To be fair, the one that goes through the Kent Transit Center is mainly for the Sounder passenger train, very few freight trains like this, but that means all the freight trains go on the track about 200’ away. Some of them seem about as long as this. Plus they’re mostly slowing down to unload at all the warehouses in town here, so they take forever—and their whistles are blowing the whole time.

I had forgotten we were voting for State Issue 1 today. I had thought that would be in November. Issue 1 is the not-so-great, but better-than-nothing legislation to change how Congressional districts are drawn to ‘prevent’ gerrymandering.
Issue 1
To amend the version of Section 1 of Article XI that is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2021, and to enact Sections 1, 2, and 3 of Article XIX of the Constitution of the State of Ohio to establish a process for congressional redistricting.
A majority yes vote is necessary for the amendment to pass.The proposed amendment would:
- End the partisan process for drawing congressional districts, and replace it with a process with the goals of promoting bipartisanship, keeping local communities together, and having district boundaries that are more compact.
- Ensure a transparent process by requiring public hearings and allowing public submission of proposed plans.
- Require the General Assembly or the Ohio Redistricting Commission to adopt new congressional districts by a bipartisan vote for the plan to be effective for the full 10-year period.
- Require that if a plan is adopted by the General Assembly without significant bipartisan support, it cannot be effective for the entire 10-year period and must comply with explicit antigerrymandering requirements.If passed, the amendment will become effective immediately.
Here are a couple criticisms (from Ballotpedia)
Mike Brickner, senior policy director at the ACLU of Ohio, said the organization neither supported nor opposed Issue 1. Brickner did offer a critique of Issue 1, saying:
In the event that bipartisan compromise cannot be reached, the rules allow for more power to be wielded by the majority party. The moment we codify methods which allow one party - the majority party - to make the rules, we lose any chance of fair and just representation. We applaud the parts of the initiative which ensure public oversight and community input, but the process could easily disintegrate back to a wholly partisan power grab, which is never in the voter’s best interest.
Stephen Wolf, an elections staff writer for the progressive website Daily Kos, stated:
Eliminating gerrymandering doesn’t just require ending one party’s unilateral control over the process, as much as that helps. Who gets to draw the lines and the criteria that guide those mapmakers is also of tremendous importance. In a vacuum, this compromise proposal is better than the status quo of GOP legislators having total control over the process. But we aren’t in a vacuum. Republican legislators shrewdly accepted that momentum was building against partisan gerrymandering, and this compromise is quite simply a way to blunt that momentum while preserving as much of their advantage as possible under a false veneer of bipartisanship.

I guess we will be reading the details soon. I am sure that Europe would like to salvage what it can out of the deal, but this is the equivalent of the US not ratifying the League of Nations Treaty…

Diplomacy-wise, their enemies are busily kicking own-goals (and high-fiving themselves over their excellent style): they are likely to get far better results by making themselves out to be the reasonable ones in the deal, and let Trump keep on making the US into the “rogue nation”.
And I do wonder if anyone in the Admin has really thought out the ramifications of pulling out of the JCPOA, outside of the cheap publicity and tough-talk rah-rah from the Deplorables, of course? The international sanctions regime only worked because a bunch of other world players (like China) went along with it. As long as Iran actually does comply (or, seem to comply) with the inspections, etc. and don’t actually set off any nukes, Trump’s new set of sanctions are, in effect, only going to affect the US. Except, of course, if the G is going to try to make complying with those sanctions a condition of trade with anybody else - in which case, yet again, as with his tariff scheme, Trump and his crew are going to seriously fuck up this country’s economy: all in the name of “better deals”, naturally…..

That is pretty much what Pat Buchannan was saying:

Iran has never tested a nuclear device and never enriched uranium to weapons grade. Under the deal, Iran has surrendered 95 percent of its uranium, shut down most of its centrifuges and allowed cameras and inspectors into all of its nuclear facilities.
