In reference to the “Brooklyn 99” cancellation, some guy on Facebook had this analysis:

Facebook Post

Summary, for those who can’t read stuff on FB: The networks have decided comedies for wingnuts like “Roseanne” are the key to the future, so look forward to network TV becoming even more unwatchable.

I believe Tim Allen’s ‘Last Man Standing’ is also coming back. And it was never a good show. Home Improvement was much better.

I’m really curious how many of these lawyers are going to (minimally) list their law licenses.

Can you take the bar in a different state if you’re licensed and then disbarred in another state?

I don’t think that’s accurate. Fix wants numbers like Rosanne (which does significantly from what I last saw) and are clearing their shows to try to find a new Empire.

They all do that. All the networks do that every season. I could list shows that had good numbers because “good” isn’t good enough. Everyone at enter network in on a quest for the holy grail of a new runaway hit.

My comments got CL’d too… basically Roseanne saw viewership go from 18m to 10m over the course of the season. Brooklyn 9-9 and Last Man on Earth were both under 2m for most of the season.

For comparison’s sake, Black-ish draws around 4m viewers every episode this season.

Also, not sure how reflective these numbers are with respect to cord cutters, as I watch via Hulu live (usually on delay without commercials) or binge on Netflix.

I believe what the President needs in his Cabinet is not 10 minutes every meeting of everyone sucking up to him, but for various secretaries to start theatrically rolling their eyes at him and miming jerking off whenever he gets off topic or goes on one of his “Grandpa Ranty” rants.

On last thought on the TV front… it is rather difficult to keep a large audience over time. Empire was incredibly hot it’s first season (and into it’s second) but it’s seen a steady decline in viewership over seasons 3 and 4. Game of Thrones is about the only outlier I can think of where the audience has been steadily growing.

There’s a lot of reasons for shows losing audiences, especially on sit-coms. Sit-coms are based on the premise that nothing really changes, plots are contained within episodes and not over the course of seasons or the show. That’s in large part a legacy from the old syndication system. So shows can get stale, new things come on, tastes change. Add in streaming services and the ability to binge, and you have to drastically rethink how you measure shows.

And that’s ultimately the thing, traditional TV is about selling ad space - the more viewers you get, the more you can charge for ads.

That makes no sense. I owned a three-bedroom house that eventually sold for $130K in suburban Texas. They won’t be able to build anything bigger’n a shed in a city like Jerusalem.

Of course, maybe Trump just plans to nuke the city as soon as he can so the Christians can have their beloved Armageddon. Don’t need to spend much on it then.

Rosanne rebounded to number 1 again. I just looked. 21.1 million viewers.

I think the linked article makes the salient point. Mrs. Fish and I converted to streaming years ago, and I haven’t watched live TV except for visits to my parents’ or in-laws’. My folks and in-laws (as mentioned), as well as my sister and most of Mrs. Fish’s extended family, all watch traditional broadcast and/or cable television. All of that to say that it seems that the audience for live TV is skewing right, hence the popularity of Faux News and completely shit shows like Roseanne. But once the live TV market dies out in the next couple of decades, the studios that invested so heavily in conservative programming are going to wither and die when they try to join the next big thing and find out that nobody wants to watch their garbage.

re: #88 HappyWarrior“Yeah I hope she used the famous McCain temper and curse repertoire on her.”

If Sadler had said what she said about Senator McCain about one of relatives, I’d be the last one she’d want to talk to. My parents raised me to be a lady, but I grew up with five brothers, so I know how to get down when I need to get down. The entire world would know what I’d tell Sadler because when the news outlets would come knocking, I would tel reporters exactly what I told her. The first thing I’d ask her after answering the phone would be, “Why in the f*ck are you calling my d@mn house?” Things would go down from that point on in the conversation, and it would be a very short conversation in which I’d say some things to Sadler others have probably never said to her.

My husband watches it (boo!!) because he loved the original series. I suppose that’s true of many of those who watch now. I never watched the original so am not tempted to watch this one.

I’ve now watched the video for “This Is America” at least five times. This is a seriously powerful work of art. I’ve known about Childish Gambino for a while but this video takes it to a complete new level for him.

I found myself in an odd place with it. Once I understood the relevance of the dance moves, it became educational and rather more shocking to me. Once exposed to those rather odd and frankly insulting to those performing dance moves I wanted to not watch it again. Then I did to learn a little more. Then the reluctance got stronger, revulsion at those moves, and hoping the video remains popular for the right reasons. Powerful art at it’s very best. And in the most unexpected media, music video. Challenging to the mind and heart.

They are the converse of the wealthy Dems profiled in the New York Times. But in their case, their votes are from ignorance and/or racism. However, at least part of it is due to the disappearance of good jobs that don’t require a higher education. Of course, we are also facing the vanishing of good jobs that do require education due to the dynamic duo: offshoring and automation.

So now it’s down to $150,000?

Sorry if already posted—I’m behind (and he is full of shit, as usual)

Is the United States somehow building “it,” as in a permanent embassy, for $250,000?

No.

Trump was probably conflating two things: a permanent new embassy to be built years from now and a temporary embassy office the U.S. is building inside an existing consular building in Jerusalem to be set up by May, NPR diplomacy correspondent Michele Kelemen and international correspondent Daniel Estrin, based in Jerusalem, report.

“Internal modifications to allow the embassy to open in an existing facility in May is anticipated to cost $200,000 to $400,000,” a State Department official tells Kelemen
