Much of the question of “civility” these days boils down to racists and bigots plaintively whining that their opinion that other people are somehow inferior isn’t treated with respect and gravity. And, well. Fuck those guys. Fuck them right up the nose. As I’ve said before, if you want me to treat your ideas with respect, get better ideas.

I had to explain to a number of people that we did not really move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, we just changed the sign outside the US Consulate there, the real embassy work will continue to be done at the complex in Tel Aviv.

I was a registered Republican and even voted for McCain in the 2000 GOP primaries and might have supported him in the general. But that was a long, long time ago.

On Mother’s Day 2012, I still had a mother, a grandmother, a stepmother and a mother-in-law. They were all gone in a little over 2 years. My mother-in-law and stepmother died on the same day in 2013. My grandmother followed a few weeks later, just after her 105th birthday. My mom passed on July 23, 2014. I last spoke to her about 5 hours before she died. I had that issue in high school as well, although I did not have any (openly) gay friends (they did not come out until later), I had no issue with homosexuality and did not tolerate gay-bashers.

My own mother called me on Mother’s Day, to find out how we’re faring after the tornado.
My father’s mother and her mother died within two weeks of each other in 1984 (I’d just been to Massachusetts to visit them from Virginia Beaach), my mother’s mother died in 2013 (I was not told until much later), and her mother in 1993 (I flew home on emergency leave from Spain for her funeral).

My grandparents have all been English speakers as well but mom’s parents knew some of their parents native language. Grandpa always told my brothers and I that our mouth was bigger than our dupas when he felt we were over eating or eating too fast. 5/8 great grandparents. I think they all knew English since they arrived fairly young but I do have an obituary of one third great grandmother who only spoke Irish. And I’m convinced that her kids grew up speaking at least some Irish because her daughter, great grandmother’s aunt who later helped raise my Nana and her siblings when Great Nana died, Nana was convinced she came over from Ireland so she must have had some kind of accent. All mine were naturalized as far as I know though I’m not too sure about one of my third great grandmothers, she was a widowed and died only a few years after arriving from Scotland.

Well 1924 was the first major done to Europeans. The Chinese Exclusionary Act happened in 1882 I believe. But yes. I definitely see the same parallels you’re seeing and it’s crazy to think if my great grandmother had been a few years younger, she likely would have been subject to the 1924 quota on immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. My mom never knew her that well but we still eat a lot of variants of her old recipes.

Part of me wants them to succeed… not because I’m on board with death and destruction, because I’m not. But on the one hand, if they’re right, they’ll all get raptured and the rest of us can get on with life (or even better: we get raptured and they’re stuck on earth to be tormented); on the other hand, if they’re wrong, maybe it’ll mean they’ll (or a significant number of them) stop believing in this stupid prophecy that isn’t actually a prophecy but marginally interesting fiction written to comment on the state of politics when it was written.

Ironically, if a leased property is infested with bedbugs, that is probably a breach of the warranty of habitability, a breach which would allow a tenant (normally), to withhold rent until it is cured (or to pay for remediation themselves). I don’t know enough about the jurisdictional rules wherever he has these properties, but usually breach of the warranty of habitability is a valid defense in unlawful detainer (eviction) proceedings. If the tenant/defendants failed to raise bedbugs as an issue, they may (unfortunately) be barred from pursuing a later claim.

What I mean by jurisdictional rules is that unlawful detainer actions can be very limited. They are in California and only a certain number of defenses are available. I realized that one reason why Trump gets along so well with dictators is that they look at him and see someone easily manipulated. Look how well KJU’s doing - he finished up his nuclear and missile development programs successfully, and then offers Trump things he was going to give up anyway, and gives Trump a chance to look like he did something useful.

It’s very rare that a nation cedes a place of global leadership and then easily gets it back. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia lost all it’s clout as the de facto leader of the Second World Nations. The fall of the French, Spanish, and British Empires hurt those three nations’ standing in the world for quite a while (arguably the British have recovered the most, but they are nowhere near the global power they used to be).
Perhaps we are unique, or at least uniquely positioned, to recovery the way other world leaders have not. But if the Trump misAdministration lasts for a full 8 years, I suspect a lot of changes will happen to the global order between now and 2024.

Avenatti made himself a public person, so his defamation case would have a higher standard of actual malice. Reading that piece, I’m not sure there’s anything that comes close to actual malice. They quote Avenatti and provide links to sources to back up parts of the story.
This is one of the reasons that attorneys shouldn’t litigate cases on TV like he has been doing. A lot of attorneys end up in disputes with business or law firm partners that can be easily dug up (not to mention claims brought by former clients).
So sad to see the Terror Attack in Paris. At some point countries will have to open their eyes & see what is really going on. This kind of sickness & hatred is not compatible with a loving, peaceful, & successful country! Changes to our thought process on terror must be made.

The other day a few of us discussed Donny Deutsch on Nicole Wallace’s MSBNC show and being a bit protective of Michael Cohen saying his only issues is he is so willing to do anything for His Don. He is friends with Cohen.
I came across this yesterday. Deutsch has real issues with Avenatti and said so on Morning Joke Friday morning.

Rumors that Avenatti has been angling for his own show have swirled since the charismatic lawyer started stomping the talk show circuit. Critics have accused Avenatti of attempting to try both Trump and embattled attorney Michael Cohen in the press instead of a court of law, an accusation Avenatti has responded to fiercely on Twitter.
Fox News host Sean Hannity, who was revealed to be a client of Cohen, is among Avenatti’s most prominent critics. The attorney has asked to go on Hannity’s show multiple times, apparently to no avail.

Trump will declare it a ‘great deal, the like of which the world has never seen’, and the GOP will fall in line. They’ll say it’s because he was tough that NK folded, but I don’t think keeping their nukes, keeping their regime, getting sanctions lifted, and joining the rest of the nuclear nations is really what we’d have called ‘folding’.

That was my thought as well, the press have gotten over their momentary flirtation with the Stormy Daniels story and are now beginning to get uncomfortable about how the elements of it are threatening Donny’s presidency. So Tucker Carlson’s digital fish wrap has given them the opportunity to do what they’ve been hinting at for some time: Present Avenatti as a “dirty” lawyer who is exploiting this story to make a lot of money. They’re not going to actually dig into the allegations he’s making because they don’t want to know where they go, so instead they’re going to attack him personally as a way of making the story all about him and drown out the allegations.

You know how we defeated Communism? By making it clear that Capitalism could be something other than a rapacious scheme to enrich the rich and impoverish the poor. We did that by regulating it and using it to enrich everyone. Probably something similar (especially as The Donald has seemingly given the Jerusalem move a fairly limited budget): Up to me, I’d do a minimal remodel at the (former) Consulate to accommodate the official staff - change the signs from “Consulate” to “Embassy”, and leave most everything else back in Tel Aviv (changing the signs from “Embassy” to “Consulate” or “Embassy Annex” or whatever). Thus saving the move money for the important stuff, like publicity for Trump…

We now have a generational divide on economics - Boomers who mostly managed to get while the getting was good vs GenXers and Millennials who are mostly screwed with stagnant wages and rising housing costs.

There is a view of corporate governance, which isn’t exactly the same thing as capitalism but is closely related, called the stakeholder model, which says that the executives and board of directors should consider all stakeholders in a corporation when making decisions - this includes not only shareholders but customers, suppliers, employees, and others they have contracted (and in a broad reading can include the community where they are located). This model has fallen out of favor and been replaced with shareholder supremacy, which argues that the executives and board of directors should only care about getting the highest return on investment for shareholders possible.
The stakeholder model tends to consider longer term objectives and will sacrifice more immediate returns. The shareholder supremacy view, however, tends to favor short term returns because all they care about are dividend payments and stock price. (Not surprisingly, the shareholder supremacy model really took off when stock options became a big selling point in executive compensation.)

Keep in mind many boomers did not get all while the getting is good. I know many in my age bracket (near or just retired) are not doing all that well. Many are maxed out on loans and cards and still owe on their homes.

A lot of the “Boomer” myth is that they keep extending the “Baby Boom™”. I thought I was right at the end of it (1952) but they kept stretching it out and out to, like 1962, to take in a lot of much younger people. In the Great Depression, we made a conscious choice to save Capitalism by making it work for everyone, based on the observation that NOT doing so allowed Capitalism to tear itself to pieces. Tax the rich heavily, invest in programs for the middle and working classes, regulate banks and finance to limit gambling.
Along about 1980, we made a conscious choice to undo that, based on the erroneous belief that unregulated Capitalism wouldn’t tear itself to pieces. 10 years ago, it did just that. We’ve put a bandage on it that kept it going another decade, but now we have people who didn’t learn from the Great Depression OR the Great Recession running the show, and they want to tear off the bandages.

So Tucker Carlson’s digital fish wrap has given them the opportunity to do what they’ve been hinting at for some time: Present Avenatti as a “dirty” lawyer who is exploiting this story to make a lot of money.
