Right Wing Media Try to Whitewash Trump’s “Animals” Statement With Bad Faith Arguments

Politics • Views: 32,444

Our so-called president did it again yesterday; he made a statement so blatantly bigoted and hateful it dominated the news cycle until the next outrageously racist thing he says.

And as usual, we have a host of right wing media pundits out there trying to claim he was only referring to MS-13 gang members — and extending that to accuse liberals and the mainstream media of sympathizing with the violent MS-13 gang.

But making this bad faith argument requires you to completely ignore Trump’s long, long history of making similar statements, calling immigrants “murderers” and “rapists,” saying they come from “shithole countries,” etc. If context is supposed to be important, then Donald Trump himself is all the context you need to evaluate this disgusting comment.

And there’s a simple way to see how the right wing base really feels about undocumented immigrants: browse through the comment sections of any of these dishonest right wing defenses. Most Trump voters absolutely love it when their dear leader makes extreme dehumanizing remarks like this.

Let’s face it. This is why they voted for him.

I really don’t know why right wingers even bother trying to run interference at this point. It’s risible beyond belief. They know what kind of person Donald Trump is. Just drop the pretense and the disingenuous bad faith arguments, folks, and embrace him. He’s your guy. Why keep fighting to picture him as something he isn’t?

Good thread on the real issues in any NK-SK-US negotiations. However, the Trump era reality is much simpler. If NK can find a way to personally bribe Trump, Trump would make any regional concessions to NK, up to and including letting NK + China try to win a war vs. SK with SK getting no US support.

Going back to our discussion in the last thread about the Electoral College and proportionally allocating electors. Just did some quick math and depending on what kind of minimums are set, it’s entirely possible that Clinton wouldn’t have got to 270 that way, either. By my math, she’d have been somewhere around 260-265. The biggest problem with the Electoral College, like the Senate, is that it gives an outsized voice to the smaller states at the expense of the larger states. With respect to the legislature, that’s a fair compromise. But with the executive, that is supposed to represent everyone, it is decidedly less fair. So, again, fuck slavery.

And it wasn’t a one off for the yam:

Trump’s long history of referring to nonwhite criminals as animals

Excerpt:

A month before he declared his candidacy in 2015, Trump described the black killers of two police officers in Mississippi as “deranged animals.” After the terrorist attacks in Paris that November, the terrorists were “animals” taking advantage of what he described as lax gun laws in France. In early December, members of the Islamic State militant group were “a vicious group of animals.”

A few days later, he said that when terrorist “animals” attacked the World Trade Center in 2001, they sent their wives back to Saudi Arabia beforehand and the wives knew what was planned. That is not true.

On the day of the Iowa caucuses, he told a crowd that the Paris attackers were animals. “The press called them masterminds, the mastermind,” he said. “They’re not masterminds — they’re animals. We have to stop it. We have to be so tough. We have to be so vigilant.”

“Can you imagine these people, these animals over in the Middle East, that chop off heads, sitting around talking and seeing that we’re having a hard problem with waterboarding?” he said during a presidential debate in March 2016.

“An immigrant from Syria, who later applied and received United States citizenship, was accused by federal prosecutors of planning to go to a military base in Texas and kill three or four American soldiers,” he said during a speech in Portland, Maine, in August of that year. “Preferably execution-style. We’re dealing with animals.”

Biggest stumbling block in all of this? Trump wants to make sanctions relief and economic aid dependent upon NK first impressing inspectors that it has totally dismantled its nuclear program. Why is that a stumbling block? That was the entire basis of the Iran deal he just scrapped while arguing that Iran was violating the terms of the deal when in reality he’s the one violating it by unilaterally scrapping it and restoring sanctions.

If an animal kills a human (e.g., a man eating tiger), the animal is hunted down and shot on sight with some small effort made to ensure the correct animal is killed.

Apparently right wingers are perfectly fine with the same model being applied to human criminal justice. After all, that’s what they did in the south for decades with the lynchings, except that ‘some small effort’ was really ‘no effort’.

This, also, too, verily and forsooth. Meanwhile, I would support an intelligent military policy that including drawing down most of the troops we have in foreign bases, of which there are many (both troops and bases). That could and probably should include a rethinking of NATO. But not by this guy, no way, no how. Ideally, Germany, France, Britain et al. are doing some long-term thinking along those lines, though given the nature of the current UK Foreign Secretary, that’s unlikely. Keep your eye on the bigger target.

Is voting against a Democrat that made the decision to allow the nomination of a new CIA director a good decision that could allow another Republican in Congress and maybe allow them to keep their majority?

Or, would it be better to work to get a Democratic majority that could rid of us Trump and keep said CIA director in check under hopefully that Democratic majority and the possibility of a Democratic President in 2020?

I hear ya but it’s still disappointing from Warner and it helps feed the Glenn Greenwalds of the world.

This lawyer it seems has a track record of calling everyone he despises a non-citizen, non-American, and they should leave HIS country.

I read the Trump quote in question and there exists enough “wiggle room” for supporters to claim that he was referring to MS-13 and not immigrants in general.

But that is not the point.

It is not going to change anybody’s mind either way, regardless of what he says. In fact, the more outrageous and bigoted things he says, the more his fans will support him.

And others will simply take it in stride, convincing themselves it is all just his style and that the other alternatives are just as bad in their own way.

And again, it is distracting us from all the other damage he and his people are doing to our economy, our environment, our society and our international diplomatic and military standing.

It was just the matter of how the payment was made that is of any interest, as it involves a possible violation of campaign or financial reporting law.

I do not see a large threat of a Russian invasion of Europe, but I certainly see Putin consolidating his hold on the territories of the ex-USSR which is threatening enough.

Angela Merkel already made it clear that Germany and Europe can no longer rely on the US as any sort of ally, militarily, diplomatically or economically, and must find their own way forward.

What world leader would be dumb enough to take Trump’s word at this point that he won’t fuck them over the moment it begins polling well with his base?

Actually, they gave up on the “Iran is really violating the deal” argument and just went with “this deal is a bad deal” or more accurately, “fuck Obama

I can understand Obama’s public statements about “looking forward, not back” and all of that. But even with those public statements, there should have been a quiet purge at the CIA of those who oversaw/conducted/approved torture. And if that meant that the CIA would have been gutted, so be it, a small funeral pyre, some salt, and a new building would be appropriate.

I’ll come in again: I hope that Germany and France are doing some long-term planning.

With tongue only slightly planted in cheek, I’m not sure, based on history, that Germany and France building up their militaries is going to bring much comfort to the rest of Europe.

In all seriousness, Russia will continue to meddle in European affairs, and I suspect that Crimea would just be a warm up act if we were to withdraw from the region. It is the same reason we need to stay in Korea and Japan, there are forces in the region that would more than love to fill the power vacuum.

My previously stated position is unchanged: whoever Trump nominates is someone who will support torture. At least Haspel is knowledgeable about the agency, is respected by its employees and may actually have the courage to stand up to Trump (I know, assumes facts not in evidence). She is also, AFAIK, not a Putin puppet; we don’t need, as director, someone who will betray the agency and this country.

Because “stigginit.” They’re going to support any “deal” made with Kim on the grounds that it’s “better” than some hypothetical deal that Obama would have worked out.

I understand what both of you are saying but after she couldn’t answer Senator Harris’s question, I think it’s more than reasonable to criticize those who voted for her confirmation. I still intend to vote for Warner in 2020 but he did without realizing it helped aid the Greewnald-BB argument about the two parties. Now GG will of course ignore that most Democrats opposed her nomination and you could well be right that someone worse could have taken her place but pressure was needed just as it was needed when Trump had the creepy douchebag from Carl’s Jr to run DOL.

I’m no fan of Warner’s vote and I am not trying to justify it. I’m just worried that Republicans could take the seat if too many people use this against Warner and he gets voted out. I don’t know how close his most recent election was, but I get the impression he considered it.

I’ve read where the Democrats that voted for Haspel are justifying their vote based on their ability to control her and also on so many in the CIA being in favor of her heading the agency as they seem to think she is highly qualified. And, thinking that all she was doing was following the directives given to her by her superiors at the time.

Warner is on the Intelligence Committee so maybe he has a feel for it.

Meet Farris Wilks, Kingmaker of the Texas GOP

Wilks is an elder at an idiosyncratic church that reportedly doesn’t allow women to speak during worship. He also pumps millions into Texas Republican politics.

Farris, who couldn’t be reached for an interview, served as bishop of the fringy Assembly of Yahweh church for 31 years until his retirement in February 2017. He now returns regularly as a kind of guest star, or “elder.” The congregation celebrates the Sabbath on Saturday, observes dietary restrictions found in Leviticus and reportedly bans women from speaking during worship.

In the wake of Obama’s 2012 re-election, according to recordings reviewed by Right Wing Watch, Wilks preached, “I do believe that our country died that Tuesday night,” adding that millenarian musings were giving him comfort: “Maybe it’s time to wrap up some things, maybe it’s time to move on to the next 1,000 years.”

He and his equally fanatical brother have contributed 3.5 million to Texas Republicans since last July, mostly to extreme right wingers even by Texas GOP standards. It is enough to swing many smaller races.

If there were a handful of Republicans willing to actually join this fight, I would absolutely agree with you. But whatever McConnell has on the rest of his caucus is obviously strong enough to keep them in line for a lot of terrible appointments. So, I think someone like Flake would make a stand on the first one but then back the second one; or Paul would have a last minute change of heart. Maybe the Democrats pick up a couple of surprise wins in the Senate come November and that scares some Republicans into acting right, but until that happens, we have to recognize that the GOP has enough votes to go along with Trump.

Apparently they tell people there is an issue with their immigration status, because of something back in China that, surprise! requires them to pay a bunch of money to someone in China. I have heard that this can be believable to some immigrants because of the way things often work in China, and especially if they still have relatives back there they may feel they need to take care of the “issue.”

While it was unclear how those two efforts would play out, what was plain to see was that Schlossberg’s website plainly stated he was “a member of the New York State Bar Association.” But a phone call proved that to be resoundingly untrue.

“Mr. Schlossberg is not a member of the New York State Bar Association,” Dan Weiller, the group’s managing director of marketing and communications, declared to NewsOne in no uncertain terms during a phone call Thursday morning.

With what power can the Democrats be sure they can keep voting nominees down? They are in the minority.

Take Flake and Paul…maybe they voted the way they did for political reasons of their own.

Are you sure they would be against any of the other candidates if they do not have the politically hot reputation of Haspel?

Which takes me back to the question of how does voting for Haspel help keep a Democratic seat in Congress? How does that vote end up netting any votes in an election? Not one Republican is going to be motivated to vote for a Democrat because of this, it only turns off the Democratic base, enrages the far left and tells everyone who wants to believe it that there’s no difference between the two parties. I can see it too, but I think it’s based on a deeply flawed calculus of what motivates people in the voting booth. I don’t see anybody saying “well I like that he/she voted for Haspel.” At best they aren’t going to give a shit and it’s far more likely that many otherwise potential supporters will actively hold it against them.

This. No votes for Democrats are to be had by peeling off Republicans or by looking to the mythical ‘center’. The only approach is to motivate and grow the base, and that requires consistent displays of fortitude, even when the votes in Congress may not be there to stop various (R) shitcannons from going off.

For example, every (D) vote in the Senate for a Trump judicial nomination is defeatist.

1. you don’t have to be an attorney to be a member of the federalist society (I used to be a member while in law school)
2. no, unless joining a bar association is optional in their state

#3…NO SHIT? I think that guy is in legal trouble then.

I hope he had a good attorney. 🤣😂

The bar associations are how lawyers police their own, so the threat of getting disbarred is a severe one that is taken seriously by all but the most foolhardy lawyers.

A mentor of mine some time ago had a habit of reading the CA bar association’s reports on its disciplinary activities. His best LOL moment from this was one guy who was convicted of manslaughter and his argument to the CA bar was that “manslaughter was not a crime of moral turpitude”. That argument didn’t fly.

re: #9 GlutenFreeJesus

After watching videos of potters load their wood firing kilns and then get the temp through the kiln to 1250C over approximately 5 days, then hold them at that temperature (stoking every 15 minutes or so) for a few more days, sealing the kiln with mud and letting the fire die out over a few more days, these guys with their glowing metal balls and popcorn do not impress me. What I am impressed with is firing a climbing wood kiln and having the flames go entirely through the kiln and up and out the chimney. It takes a few days to achieve this and is something you want to know what you’re doing before you attempt it. This is definitely a situation where you want your neighbors to know that you’re not burning anything down.

There are lots of videos of kiln firings; this one is of a Japanese master back in the later ’00s. This particular kiln was knocked down during the Fukushima earthquake but has since been rebuilt.

Even if Trump had just said “MS-13 members are animals” that doesn’t help the Trumpist cause very much.

Animals that kill people are hunted down and shot on sight. This is exactly the law enforcement model that gets RWNJs all hot and bothered in their unmentionables, as long as it is applied only to black and brown people.

Clearly a Trump troll because you have no courtesy or manners. Our host’s name is Charles, not Chuck. And repeating outright lies about Michelle Obama is not likely to endear you to any decent person.

I read Trump’s exchange and it seemed designed to cover all immigrants. He had a long rant but nowhere did he mention MS13. Even if the query itself mentioned MS13, his direction was not so limited. One certainly could argue that he is renowned for his imprecision, but Mr “some very fine people on both sides” doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Trump of course removed Obama’s focus on criminals to unleash ICE on all undocumented immigrants, so any claim that his brag about removing “animals” at a fast rate was about MS-13 members only is false.

The thing about the Good Samaritan is that it’s easy for right-wing assholes to abstract the parable away if they keep portraying the erstwhile hero as a Samaritan, because to a modern layperson, “Samaritan” is a historical construct that has no contextual value. If you rephrase the parable in modern terms that they understand, suddenly it gets a whole lot more uncomfortable.

Technically, just about every Jew is a “Samaritan” because the original term referred to Northern Israelites who intermarried with their occupiers after Samaria fell.

What’s being displayed is contempt for the very premise of truth established by empiricism.

Hence why the commentators can propose multiple, completely seperate speculations and feel zero obligation to rectify their own thinking.

If the scientist can’t make them feel it’s true—and they’re heavily invested in feeling it’s not—it’s not true.

This is the rejection of the premises of science and the Enlightenment values that inform secular society and scientific thinking. On purpose.

At least I was able to roll it back, thank the gods of Redmond…

was it the 1803 update that borked your networking? try this, if so :

Right click the Start button and click on Run near the bottom of the menu that shows. Type services.msc in the Run box and press enter to open the Services List. Scroll down until you find the Function Discovery Resource Publication. Set it to Automatic. Then right click and start it. That PC will now show up. (Might need a reboot) You need to do this on all computers in the Network that are running April update 1803.
