How does Ms. Ioffe feel about her publication hiring Kevin Williamson, then firing him after the outcry from liberals over his hideous abortion statements? Or the Libertarian Party’s Reason defending Williamson’s statements?

She is choosing to be selectively outraged. Hence my comment above about Williamson. I wonder how Ms. Ioffe would feel if the attack was directed against her (such as Williamson) rather than others.

The only moral abortion speech is my abortion speech!

In a public area, probably not (for most states). In the bathroom, there should be an expectation of privacy however.

Yeah. And here’s the thing. They always target trans women. Always. They don’t tell trans men they should use the women’s room. TBH I don’t pay attention to who is using the bathroom. This crap is all about the right finding a new scapegoat after losing the SSM battle.

A century ago a lot of Jews lived in slums (because the Christians forced them to) and kept away from employment. Yup. It’s almost as if they have something against women, not transgender people.

It’s something like the Dixiecrat Fallacy (the Dems started the Klan, &c).

Long ago, gender and sex were largely considered the same thing. As more medical and social science research came in, they were discovered to be largely independent of each other.

Conservatives (being those folks standing athwart history yelling stop) didn’t change their thinking as the scientific data improved (being also anti-science).

Holy crap, this is a horrible story. The child in question was kidnapped and taken to a place where three other African-Americans had already been murdered.

Just Some Domestic Terrorists Kidnapping Little Black Boys And Maybe Murdering Some Other Folks Is All (Wonkette, more at the link):

Houston, we have a problem!!! And unfortunately for black people, it’s the same problem we have been dealing with since Reconstruction, when some “very fine people” decided that lynching black people would keep them from getting too uppity.

Recently, 13-year-old Houston resident Zavion Parker found himself in a situation that mothers of young black men have feared since long before Mamie Till forced the nation to view the body of her son Emmett in an open casket. Zavion says he was taken captive by a group of young white men who were intent on doing to him what had been done to so many others before: murdering him. Perhaps they thought Zavion was being “uppity” or “arrogant” when he stepped off of his school bus, or maybe they were just racist bastards who are too dangerous to be walking the streets. So, in Trump lingo, they were some “very fine people,” aka Nazis.

When her sixth grader did not show up home after school, Michelle Lee was understandably concerned and she contacted authorities. Hours later, her son turned up with torn clothes and scratches, and was missing his phone, coat, shoes, and keys. As far as Zavion and his mother are concerned, he is lucky to be alive. The story he tells is a chilling reminder of the sordid history of anti-black violence in our nation. It’s a tale of racist tattoos, kidnapping, assault, threats, terrorism, and possibly murder. So, it’s a classic American Tale. And we have barely scratched the surface.

It helped somehow that Ledger’s Joker had no real backstory except the unreliable one about how he got his scars that he narrated to Gambol. Like the Scorpio killer in the original Dirty Harry the Joker is one of the rare villains that is actually more compelling and works better when the audience isn’t handed some reason for why he is the way he is. It’s like we don’t want to know what creates a pure psychopath because such characters inherently exist outside reason and any explanation inevitably comes off as comically contrived, like Nicholson falling into a chemical bath.

I know people like to throw up Holland as an example of land below sea level, but in reality it’s a small country and only a relatively small amount of land needs to be protected from the sea flooding in.

In Eastern China, it’s a thousand kilometers of shoreline and millions upon millions of acres.

Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong are further examples. Somehow I suspect the technocrats in China’s government have some kind of plan for dealing with rising sea levels, though. Unlike American government officials, they don’t bury their heads in the sand when it comes to climate change. China’s been dealing with flooding for millennia.

On the other hand, encouraging rapid urban growth in areas that will likely be underwater in 50 to 100 years does seem unwise.

Woman Nervously Reaches For Cell Phone As Suspicious Black Man Tells Her Today’s Soup Is Minestrone (The Onion)

SACRAMENTO, CA—Claiming she had been keeping a cautious eye on him from the moment she sat down, local woman Rebecca Marinelli confirmed Thursday that she anxiously reached for her cell phone after a suspicious-looking black man told her the soup of the day was minestrone. “I just didn’t like the look of him, lurking around in that apron, and then he came right up to me, pulling out a pad of paper and asking if I would like anything to drink,” said Marinelli, who reportedly exchanged nervous glances with her friend across the table and quietly dialed 911 after seeing the strange man go up to people at another table and ask them for money. “I have no idea why he’s here. He isn’t buying anything. God, my heart was in my throat when he came over here and asked if he could refill my water. I even tried to take a video on my phone for the police, but it was too hard to see his face behind the trays of food he was carrying.” At press time, sources reported that police arriving on the scene had pulled their firearms and slammed the suspect onto a table after he produced a threatening packet of oyster crackers.

Since this is my safe space, I’m going to say that I feel completely alienated from the current progressive flourishing because they keep conjuring with kiddie-pool Marxism.

Marxism is fucking dumb, even if Marx did a good job describing what was happening in cities in his time. It starts with sciencefail—“societies evolve like animals, but not really”—and ends with Marx inventing shit like “lumpenproletariat” to handwave why people don’t act they way he says they should according to his dialectic.

Furthermore, you can critique Marxism by contrasting the theory with it’s applied derivatives—Leninism and Maoism—and how fucked up states that operated under them were. There is a basic bad premise…the same bad premise that fucks up a lot of Western philosophers…that people are homogeneous actors, such that you can invent an idea like “the single-party state run by the workers,” and the “workers” is a meaningful, generalizable grouping of individuals such that axiomatically a “worker’s party” couldn’t turn out to be full of venal shitgibbons and the occasional fucking monster or three.

I’ve read Lenin, god help me. It fucking poleaxes me that Yanks fucking put him and Marx on the same podium, when all his Pravda writing was “well Marx has a point, but these fucking peasants are fucking stupid so we won’t count them as workers and we’ll making all the fucking decisions for these hayseed twats that don’t wipe their asses. Vanguardism is totally different from, you know, other oligarchies because…squirrel!…and fuck you for implying I might be some kind of megalomaniac.” Giant flashing alarm lights this dude was going to pogrom somebody, because he sure as fuck wasn’t going to admit he was wrong.

Idiots.

And I’m especially sick of the square-peg-in-round-hole hot takes where progressives project their notions of class onto Trump supporters because they buy into the idea that “working white people” is a meaningful grouping in the way that “workers” is…which is an incredibly privileged—and, yes, white nonsense—that ignores the long history in this country (and Europe) of power structures that aren’t class superceding the interests of class, such that people who should be fired up about the class struggle are focused on supporting the status quo. Because it’s convenient to their shallow analytical level, lumpenproletariat reactionaries (a la 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon) are stupid dupes with no agency, not people making an active choice to value immaterial power dynamics—feeling superior to brown people/chicks/that trash family two streets over—over practical solutions that would help them, but also render them equal to the despised Other.

False consciousness is a fucking copout. The phlogiston of social scientific analysis.

And it’s especially stupid in the current situation, where the “texts” that inform the Trumpian thoughtworld and readily available and completely contradict their premises and analysis. To believe what they believe, they have to ignore the emotional tone, the incoherence of agenda, and the straight-from-the-source statements of the people they’re claiming to speak for.

I’ve been living in Trumpland for twenty fucking years. Their basic operating premise is that they are a priori deserving and others—the bad types of people—are axiomatically undeserving. As such, any policy that lifts all boats in injustice and theft. Which is why they would rather burn things down than improve things generally.

Which is why amorphous “winning” by owning the libs and pretending everything Trump does is a triumph is better than competent governance. Which is why practical measures of governance and foreign relations have been discarded for symbolic displays of dominance. Which is why a constant string of Twitter abuse by the POTUS is lagniappe.

I want to be supportive because I’m theoretical of the same ideological bent, but this is ridiculous. It’s the same kind of own-goaling, smug blindness that’s bit European Marxists in the ass for a century and a half: they insist reality works how they say, not matter what’s actually happening, fail epically, then go explain away that failure as society gets even fucking worse.

Also, why the fuck don’t these people actually read shit they’re invoking? Or getting up to date with the (much better, much more relevant) post-Marxists?

re: #174 The Ghost of a Flea

What the neo-marxists (for lack of a better term) seem to be ignoring is what Marx himself lacked - the discoveries of anthropologists.

And even more so, the discovery of archeologists and why civilizations began in the first place.

There is also a strain of self-described “progressives” who are really just bandwagoning - they don’t really have deeply thought out beliefs, but are trying to ride some contemporary train.

This is something that I think, again, is so lacking in contemporary American public dialogue - real discussions over ideas. Instead, we are left with Twitter.

The challenge for all of humanity is how do we manage our possession - this planet - so that everyone can have some benefit of it and even more so that there can be a future for many generations of humans.

This will have to involve some sort of evolution in the idea of private property. Not to abolish it (as the most radical of marxists may dream), but to understand it and accept the full consequences of it.

I believe that the idea of private property has to be cast strongly in the light of stewardship. To “own” something means to be the steward of it. This ought to limit the actions one can take.

This belief is the basis of strong regulations regarding things like pollution and land management.

Ideology is necessary, but it can’t be from a locked up ivory tower but needs to be practiced in the real world.

He had thousands of civilians executed for being loyal to the opposition.

re: #181 Anymouse 🌹

During the Russian Civil War, the Reds engaged in punitive actions versus civilians if they were perceived as supporting the Tsarists (the White Guard), or any of the breakaway governments. Trotsky was a part of that as a military commander. The campaigns against non-Slavs, like in the Caucuses, were particularly ugly.

Admittedly, I’m engaged in hyperbole because I’m a bit tired out. I’ve got specific people who are dropping this kind of edgelord progressive shit on me, and it’s just a waste of air talking to them seriously. Hence unloading here, where you guys know I’m unloading and not being a bit over the top.

On the list of 20th century monsters, Trotsky is pretty far down on the list, though he does make the list.

Still, the uncomfortable reality of marxist revolutions was so well parodied by George Orwell that I think the obvious is obvious by now.

Except those who don’t want to accept it.

While not trying to apologise for what Trotsky might have done in this assertion, I would note the concept of “war crime” did not yet exist. Through WW2 armies always used attacks on civilians to create terror, drive refugees to cause confusion to an opponent, disrupt the enemy rear, &c. (The worst instances of attacking civilians would be Nanking by the Japanese, Dresden by the Allies, and atomic weapons on Japan by the United States).

The Red Terror

This is post-WW1; there was some standards in general about treatment of civilians.

But what really stands out is the contrast of what the Bolsheviks claimed to be (for “the people) versus how they conducted themselves, how they replicated Tsarist suppression of occupied peoples—a lot of Russia was not Russian by choice—and how their violence was nearly identical to the White Terror they would go on to deplore.

Trotsky himself was in charge of determining enemies of the state, and the line between “complaining about forced requisition” and “trying not to starve” and “conspiracy against the state” was nihil.

Marx makes a key point that capital and private property should not be treated as if they were identical.

When a company is too big to fail, then it is too big to remain unregulated, or the “free market” ceases to function properly.

And as a fan of the free market, I want to see it function, but I want to see it function for the benefit of everyone: producers and consumers, employers and employees, lenders and borrowers.

I found what this refers to in that very long Wikipedia article on Trotsky. (There is no way I am going to learn everything there is to know about him in a half-hour read of Wikipedia.)

Years later, anarchist Emma Goldman and others criticized Trotsky’s actions as Commissar for War for his role in the suppression of the [Kronstadt] rebellion, and argued that he ordered unjustified incarcerations and executions of political opponents such as anarchists, although Trotsky did not participate in the actual suppression. Some Trotskyists, most notably Abbie Bakan, have argued that the claim that the Kronstadt rebels were “counterrevolutionary” has been supported by evidence of White Army and French government support for the Kronstadt sailors’ March rebellion. Other historians, most notably Paul Avrich, claimed the evidence did not point towards this conclusion, and saw the Kronstadt Rebellion as spontaneous.

Reading about that rebellion linked above (the military against the Bolsheviks in 1920) is about as complicated as the article on Trotsky itself. There seems at the time quite a bit of contention as to whether putting down the rebellion by military forces was justified, and that debate seems to continue today.

But Marxism has acquired a belief system component that is partly his fault, since he put his prescriptive work in the category of verified-as-scientific—capital-T True—rather than as a theoretical structure.

Also, tonight I’m just being pissy and thus not very precise.

Thanks for the link, but as for treatment of civilians, not so much.

See also the White Terror, the Czarist equivalent at the same time, and which killed (estimates in the article) about three times as many people.

Both were horrible.

Various treaties concerning treatment of opposition by armed forces only refer to opposing armed forces (the last being the Geneva Convention of 1949).

An amendment to the treaty in 1977 adds civilians to the list, but the United States has not ratified it (why am I not surprised at that).

Kinda got busy all at once here at the hut. The people we went to visit in Florida last month (which I had a bad flu the whole trip) came here last week for a seminar. Then my dad came for a week. While he was here I had to do a wheel bearing on the car and also a couple of weeks before, we got a real wet heavy snow and my wife was driving with the wipers going and about 500 pounds of wet snow slid off the roof and busted the wiper motor so I did that too. Then the boy went to do an oil change on the van and pulled the trans plug instead. Tomorrow I gotta cut down a small tree growing pretty close to the house and my mom wants me to come out and fix the headlights on her golf cart at the campgrounds in the Dells. Also I’m going to a play tomorrow night. Also the microwave over the stove died.

Kim Jong Un understands America

Unchanged U.S. Ambition for World Hegemony

Some days ago, the U.S. House of Representatives shaped a bill on national defense right for fiscal 2019 which included the military budget to the tune of 717 billion U.S. dollars.

Such huge military spending is used to maintain the U.S. military bases and various types of military hardware deployed in all most of regions and continents and the Department of Defense and other mechanisms, form new armed forces and develop cutting-edge military technology, etc.

It shows that the U.S. is seeking to block multi-polarization of the world and keep the unipolar world at any cost.

The U.S. has not given up even a moment its wild design to change the world in its favor, dominating it single-handedly.

It regards military spending as the size of strength.

After the end of the Cold War, the U.S. military appropriation has always been many times higher than the world’s second largest nation in military spending, which is much more than the military spending of major powers put together.

In the U.S., the military spending has been increased every year, though its economy has fallen into stagnation due to the swelling trade and financial deficits.

The U.S. is running high fever in military reinforcement to check the military influence of its potential rivals and their expansion of sphere of force in the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, etc. and other regions and continents and establish its supremacy over this planet.

China, Russia and all other countries that challenge the unipolar world by the U.S. are regarded as targets of obstacle lying in the way of realizing “peace by strength”.

The U.S. ambition to dominate the world with strength remains unchanged in any case.

A man here in prison is seeking exoneration in a 1988 murder case, claiming DNA evidence clears him of the crime. He is now being represented by the Innocence Project.

starherald.com

SCOTTSBLUFF — A man convicted in the 1988 murder of a Scottsbluff man and his girlfriend alleges another man committed the murders, not as part of a robbery as investigators originally contended, but to cover up a rape.

Jeffrey Boppre, 54, is serving two life sentences in the September 1988 killings of Richard Valdez, 25, and Sharon Condon, 19, who was Valdez’s girlfriend. A jury convicted Boppre of the killings in March 1989 and two counts of using a weapon to commit murder and two counts of robbery. Prosecutors alleged Boppre stole drug money before killing Valdez, who prosecutors said wrote a “dying declaration” identifying his killer. At the scene, investigators found the letters “JFF BOPPE” written in grease and the name “JEFF” written in blood near Valdez’s body. Two men testified at trial against Boppre, claiming to have been a part of the robbery scheme or witnesses.

However, Boppre has repeatedly filed appeals and sought relief, maintaining that he is innocent of the crime.

Hot take from Foreign Affairs:

Why Trump Can Safely Ignore Europe: It’s Leaders Readily Condemn but Rarely Act

Europe has reacted swiftly and with great fury to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision last week to pull out of the Iranian nuclear deal. The problem is not simply that the Trump administration has undermined one of the signature achievements of European foreign policy but that his inherent volatility, his unpredictability, and most of all his lack of commitment to the transatlantic alliance mean that any act of U.S. disruption is now possible. Righteous indignation is the language of the day, and predictions about the death of the transatlantic alliance abound.

But laments and indignation do not add up to strategy. The real question is not whether Europeans are pissed off but whether they will do anything in response to Trump’s actions. The answer is most likely no.

Yunno, they quietly put contingency plans into place. Angela Merkel has long been saying that they can no longer rely on America as an ally in any political, economic, diplomatic or military sense any more.

She is not the sort to just make up stuff on the fly and expect her people to come up with things to flesh it out, she obviously has negotiations going on right now.

I see it as no longer a matter of “if”. When they strategically re-orient themselves and drop the Dollar as the world’s reserve currency, the repercussions are going to be shattering.

started reading the article: one paragraph struck me

“The simple answer is that Europeans need the alliance more than the Americans do. For Europe, the transatlantic alliance is its rock of stability in an otherwise ever-changing world and the foundation on which it has constructed European security and European integration.”

And that is the issue: the USA is no longer a stable partner. They really have to look at the ascending powers in the world (Russia, China) and come to terms with them without relying on the USA any more..

In Greece, for example, policymakers look to Washington for protection not from Russia or terrorism but from Germany’s stringent economic policies.

Because American banks own the default insurance on Greek debt. If Greece is allowed to go under, the US will wind up eating their losses, not Europe.

Clinics that receive federal money from a family planning programme known as Title X will be banned from referring clients for abortion, discussing abortion with patients, or sharing space with abortion providers.

If they do so, their funding will be withdrawn.

A bit of Cantopop history here.

Beyond was a Hong Kong-based band from 1983-2005. Its leader, Wong Ka Kui, died in 1993 after he sustained massive head injuries in a tragic stage accident in Tokyo. One of his most famous songs is Glorious Years (光輝歲月) , which was dedicated to Nelson Mandela.

On a personal level, very little would change, I have been in Europe longer than I ever lived in America and have little reason to think of going home. Besides, my kids live here.

If America declares secondary sanctions against countries that continue to trade with Iran, then Europe will have to decide whether to cast its lot with an unstable, unpredictable USA that does not keep its agreements (Paris Accords, JPCOA, etc.) or come to some arrangement with Russia, China and the ascending economic and political powers in Eurasia.

If they do that and abandon the $ as the world reserve currency, then the USA will be the long-term loser.

If the US loses its ability to finance its debt by selling dollars abroad, our entire system will collapse and I would recommend building an underground shelter, stocking and and arming it well for at least 3-7 years until the dust settles.

Deep Thoughts: People spend a lot of time analyzing Trump’s words and trying to explain the meaning and intent behind them, but maybe he’s just a fucking idiot who blurts out whatever crazy shit is in his senile brain at that particular moment?

We only argue back and forth about them for the sake of argument. We are all aware of who he is and what he is saying and why. His words, no matter how extreme, are not going to change anyone’s opinion about him.

Those who support them cheer on his rhetorical excesses, others take it in stride, convinced that he is just a blowhard but somehow the lesser evil and the rest of us (and the plurality of US voters in the last election) do not want him in office.

And that is the issue: the USA is no longer a stable partner. They really have to look at the ascending powers in the world (Russia, China) and come to terms with them without relying on the USA any more..

……

China is definitely a rising power who will dominate the world for the rest of our lifetime. But Russia — not so much. It’s successful at interfering with Western democracies and tearing us down. But economically, it’s irrelevant and there’s nothing to suggest that this will change. Putin is Kim with a lot of bombs and nothing more.

Considering Republicans are generally opposed to Liberal Arts (Humanities, Fine Art, Music, History, &c) as an education path, it would not surprise me if there was a dearth of Republicans at Liberal Arts colleges.

We have a precedent, the Libya sanctions. The EU made it unlawful for EU companies to abide by US orders and indemnified those companies which were or might have been sanctioned. End result: complete nullification of US sanctions; US backed down.

It makes the assumption that Europe needs America as a source of stability and as a mediator for their internal quarrels.

But the United States has shown itself to be an unstable and unpredictable partner who is no longer to take the side of Europe or to act as an unbiased arbitrator.

And Angela is not one to bluster and make hollow statements. If she got up and announced that the USA is no longer a reliable partner, it means that she is already well on her way to forging other alliances.

Simply entering the country without proper authorisation is not a crime, but a civil offence. It carries a fine and deportation as the penalty.

The actual crime is avoiding a customs house (smuggling). That is a Felony and punishable by jail (and can be meted out to both Americans and foreigners).

The other crime associated with that is hiring someone knowing they are not authorised to legally work in the country. That is also a Felony punishable by fines, jail, and seizure of assets. However, corporations and businesses would be the ones guilty of that (normally), the GOP would never want that crime prosecuted.

Even Rudy isn’t bothering to claim that Trump is innocent of criminal acts. He’s left with claiming that Trump can’t be indicted because he’s president.

That’s an admission of criminality and Rudy thinks that quibbling over whether Trump can be indicted is the hill to die on.

Rudy thinks that Trump can’t be indicted because he’s president. The problem is that the criminal acts alleged and those that Mueller’s investigating aren’t mere obstruction of justice and perjury (which are impeachable offenses for those keeping score) but going to seditious actions and conspiracy against the US, which are high crimes. The fact that so many within Trumpworld were involved in this, knew about it, covered up, etc., brings not only Trump admin/campaign/transition into the scope, but even members of Congress.

That’s why so many GOPers like Nunes are insistent the investigation end. They know they’re fucked if the investigation continues. Nunes was on the transition team. Pence headed the transition and Flynn was a key member (who’s already entered a guilty plea).

Manafort and Gates were campaign managers with exclusive access to Trump. Papadopoulos was a key foreign policy adviser.

All these guys were up to their eyeballs in criminal acts at the behest of the admin and running their own sideshow criminal enterprises to boot.

Then we’ve got Cohen’s criminal acts and now he’s twisting in the wind as more evidence comes out not only about payments, but that there may be even more flagged payments that can’t be explained by anyone.

Yes, I thought that was part of the 1988 reform and amnesty, up to then it was not a punishable offense.

Morning!

I heard someone the other day say indictments against Trump could be made and then sealed to be used once Trump leaves office. At that point the indictments can be unsealed and then prosecutors can go after him as a private citizen for offenses he did while as President.

Is there any truth in that? Does a sealed indictment mean there is no statute of limitations since it was made within the time frame and then sealed?

The comment was made within the discussion that if a President can’t be touched while in office, you just wait until he is out of office. I think they were saying it is unusual, but legal.

I can only assume that his tactic is now just to throw up enough dust and smoke so as to distract, distract, distract from what is going to come out.

It’s the only tactic he’s got at his disposal since the law and facts aren’t on his side. He’s left pounding the table (feebly at that).

Impeachment isn’t a legal procedure, but a political one. Trump could be impeached without Mueller, but the GOP wont do that unless they have overwhelming evidence - which is of a sort that Mueller could provide. The Senate report is enough IMO to start proceedings.

So where does this leave us? Hoping Democrats retake the House and hold Trump accountable for his actions. The GOP continues to be complicit in refusing to make sure that Trump follows the rule of law.

If the House impeaches, then it’s up to the Senate to take action in a trial. Considering that there’s far more evidence against Trump than there ever was against Clinton, the GOP can’t argue here that obstruction/perjury aren’t high crimes, and those are actually the least bad things Trump and his cronies have done.

Welp…if there wasn’t proof of a clear double standard for Trump in the media before, the ‘animals’ quote certainly shows it.

How many times has he been given the benefit of the doubt and the media soft-pedaled back on his dogwhistles, when they buried Hillary for the ‘deplorables’ remark, when Obama’s ‘god and guns’ comment haunted him for his entire term, when there are so many goddamn points where context actually exonerates the comments, where this still ends up the same fucking guilt by association anti-immigrant fearmongering either way?

Just…fuck.

At what point do we become a country that allows a criminal to continue to lead the country? Especially one who broke the law to obtain that office?

How are we arguing this? This is so wrong.

No. Okay. Got it.

If we make biometric photo SS cards, we have the problem solved in a big hurry, they would just have to indicate citizenship/residence status.

so what not this simple solution and instead bluster about building walls, rounding up people and separating families?

Because too many vested interests have no reason to implement a just, humane and comprehensive solution.

Re: deadly bus crash in NJ yesterday.

It appears that the bus may have missed its exit and was attempting an illegal U turn at a center median crossover when it got clipped by the dump truck. If true, then the driver of the bus is at fault and could be charged in connection with the death of a teacher and student along with 40+ injured students.

That was really a very bad move from the bus driver. You really shouldn’t do that in a car. The length of a bus and the arc it would take to swing a bus through the median takes some time, so there is no way you can make that move safely for traffic on your side or the other.

I’ll never forget that happening to my parents back the year I graduated high school.

They were on their way back from Cleveland on I-71 and a young kid driving his date and another couple to prom night missed their exit and were running late to get to the restaurant clubhouse where their dinner was being held.

The kid tried to go through the median, mistimed how long it would take to make the move to get in the fast lane going the other way.

He got scared and swung the car too wide and he went over the fast lane he was trying to keep his can in and smacked my father’s car on the driver’s side exactly parallel to their car and flattened the whole side about 3” front fender to rear fender.

Thankfully it was parallel side to side. Had he hit them at an angle it may have been a lot worse. My father was able to take the hit and keep the car straight to slow down and pull over.

Anymouse 🌹  May 18, 2018 • 7:16:28am

Just put new batteries in the weather radio. My wife said, “Don’t do that! That will bring another tornado!”

It would appear the station that provides us alerts (Angora, NE, part of Cheyenne’s area) is down. Even when it’s working, we are right on the edge of the transmission range so we have trouble picking it up.

Oshkosh, NE (part of North Platte’s area) comes in fine, but they don’t give warnings for our county.

There are stations which use a special system where any alert for the country is broadcast, and if your radio is set to that FIPS code for that county, you get the alert. However, the NWS only uses those stations in highly populated areas. As such, we’re stuck out here with a milliwatt transmitter fifty miles away which we can barely get on a good day.

We act as if there is a discussion or a debate or people to be swayed on their opinion of Trump based on what he says and does.

That discussion longer exists. Those who support him do so because he is bigoted and rude, or at least simply accept that because they see him as a lesser evil.

Wow, when even Maggie “But muh access” Haberman is calling out Cheeto Benito’s bad-faith trolling…

Not impressed. She built this with her incessant both-siderism, in the same way that George Will has “suddenly seen the light.”

They are two facets of the same problem: Neither wants to report on what’s actually happening. Haberman just wants access to the throne, Will is upset that Trump is not using approved conservative dog whistles.

The same goes for people such as Jennifer Rubin or Rick Wilson. They would be fine with your generic new cruelty conservative; they just don’t like it that Trump isn’t sticking to the standard conservative vocabulary.

All my life conservatives have trained this voter base, with plenty of the voters ready to play.

All Trump did was take the establishment conservative politicians’ voters away from them because he in fact “told it like it is.” He spoke to them exactly as they have been trained, and as he knocked off each establishment conservative in the primaries one by one, the GOP base just cheered more while Frankenstein was befuddled over why he’d lost control of his monster.

There’s wingnuts in the Czech Republic - face it, they’re everywhere - but even the wingnuts here are, by and large, in agreement with Czech gun control policies. Like one commented (translated): “And if we [Czech Republic] were like the USA, with everyone having guns, everyday would be the massacre at the OK Corral.” And yes, Czechs know what the shootout at the OK Corral was.

We seem to be despairingly unique that way, where we have one of the most powerful groups in America almost begging for more OK Corrals, consistently feeding the imagination of their marks of being the Wyatt Earp or Doc Holliday in such a situation. “Good guy with a gun”….

A convenient excuse to block anyone from that part of the world from even entering the USA…

There are always returning citizens. And the outcry when President Obama didn’t instantly solve the Ebola crisis. How soon the rats in congress forget.

There is an active shooter situation at Santa Fe high school outside of Houston. My husband used to teach there.

I am sick to my stomach.

I should not have to worry that when I send my husband and son to their high school they may get fucking shot in the head.

My Libertarian (embarrassed Conservative) friend was arguing this morning that school shootings are rare.

He did have a seemingly-valid point that the recent thwarted shooting isn’t in the news like it should be. CNN covered it, but I had to do a search since it wasn’t on the US News page.

I just got off the phone with my insurance agent to let him know that my bedroom ceiling is now my bed’s comforter and covering for my carpet.

If they didn’t know about a roof leak, they do now.

Do you have any big tarps you could put up over the roof area that might be large enough to go up over the crown and then down to cover the leaking area?

I know around Columbus when there is wind that blows off roofing shingles or slates, you can call a roofer and they will put up a tarp until they can get to the repair. The insurance company might pay for it too, as it prevents more damage they might have to cover later.

China Launching Relay Satellite Toward Moon’s Far Side Sunday

The Chang’e program was named after the Chinese goddess of the moon, and “Queqiao” means “bridge of magpies.” This latter moniker comes from a Chinese folktale. In the story, as China’s state-run Xinhua news service explained last month, “magpies form a bridge with their wings on the seventh night of the seventh month of the lunar calendar to enable Zhi Nu, the seventh daughter of the Goddess of Heaven, to cross and meet her beloved husband, separated from her by the Milky Way.”

OMG! It’s actually named Bridge of Birds! I wish Barry Hughart had lived to see this.

Including today’s shooting incident at a Texas high school, this year there have already been 22 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed. That averages out to more than 1 shooting a week.

Leadership put the bill on the floor gambling it would pass despite unanimous Democratic opposition. They negotiated with conservative lawmakers up to the last minutes.

But their gamble failed. The vote was 198-213.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) described the legislation as “cruel” and argued that with the proposed changes to food stamps, “Republicans are taking food out of the mouths of families struggling to make ends meet.”

Republicans contend the food stamp changes are a reasonable approach that would help move able-bodied adults from poverty to work. “Our bill goes shoulder-to-shoulder with recipients to help get them the training and education they need to attain a job that can provide for them and their families,” Conaway said.

The current farm bill expires Sept. 30 and the pending legislation would reauthorize numerous programs and policies. In addition to the food stamps, flash points include an extension of supports for the sugar program, which a coalition of conservative lawmakers backed by free-market outside groups tried unsuccessfully to get rid of in an amendment defeated Thursday.

The legislation also directs the USDA to reevaluate changes the Obama administration made to the National School Lunch Program to set new nutrition requirements. It extends the Agriculture Department’s subsidy program that compensates farmers when average crop prices fall below certain levels — and expands by widening who counts as a “farmer,” for subsidy purposes. An amendment by Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) to phase out farm subsidies altogether was defeated Thursday.

Well, Governor Ricketts, I hope your talk with Sonny Perdue in Alliance yesterday was worthwhile.

You know what conservatives don’t care about? Your state’s agriculture.

By the way, Governor, where’s our disaster declaration? You went right through our town to get to Alliance, and back through on the way back to Lincoln.

Oh right, you’re a conservative, it didn’t affect you personally so you don’t care.

I wish there was some way to get through to conservative voters that conservative politicians don’t care about them.

So, a sheriff deputy was also shot (apparently still alive). And 8 (to 10?) kids have been killed. How effective is a policeman anyway? Sure, he may have brought it to an end…but we still have 8 or more deaths.

They are also saying there were explosives (bombs) found.

The cops stopped this mass shooting the same way that one civilian with an AR stopped that church massacre after the killer shot himself.

I want to talk about flag and gun guy for a minute.

On some level, he thinks he’s helping, and I thinks it’s an interesting display of the base assumptions he and people like him have about themselves, and society in general.

When I say—and I do, often—that there are people that view themselves as axiomatically the “good guy”…well, this is what it looks like. He’s not thinking about how he’s a stranger relative to the people passing by him, or in the school (though an hour later, I doubt the kids are about), or seeing him on social media next to the school as they worry about their kids who go to that school.

The presumption is that he can’t be “read” by other people as anything but being helpful, that he can’t be perceived as a threat. This is a thing we see over and over again, built into NRA at the bottom floor.

Notice I’m not taking the piss out of this man’s choices. This is not the time for smugness and mockery. This is serious; this is a metonym for a style of thinking we have to attend to.

Why is his base assumption he would be read as “safe” even though he is an armed stranger?

Well, I think the answer is the way he’s got a MAGA hat and a flag…and I don’t mean that as some kind of political shit talk. To him, the gun, flag, and hat are a set. They signify, and that other people don’t read them as symbols in the same way just isn’t something that registers.

This is entirely in line with what’s unhealthy about US gun culture; it’s not the ownership by itself, the expanded narrative of what it means to carry a firearm and what it means to object to people carrying a firearm. This man is trying to do something good, but he’s demanding that the people he’s helping accept his presumptions, most especially the idea that his intentions can’t be doubted.

And I think this is important, because it goes back to my ongoing observation that this is about things beyond ideology, into the realm of epistemology.

To this man, his symbol set is True. The gun and the flag and the hat means he’s one of the good guys. That someone might not see those signifiers the same way isn’t a valid option. It’s either a sign of stupidity or malice.

What unifies the reactionaries collaborating right now is the way that in different facets they have the same relationship to ideas: whatever they feel the meaning is, that is the true meaning, and other perceptions are invalid. This is present in their approach to science, exegesis, social critique, et cetera.

And furthermore—and this is where shit gets important and kind of scary—it is their right to modify and contextualize meaning such that nothing is generalizable (in the Categorical Imperative sense). Distinction based on affiliation is superordinate to universal principles, and external displays of affiliation are how that discernment is made.

The presumption of this man, and people like him, that they “read” as safe, would not be extended to people who do not perform identity the same way.

What seems to be hypocrisy is actually a consistency using a different criteria set. One that we should all worry about, because it’s essentially tribal, but also because it’s hack-able. Symbol-value and performance of identity are exploitable, which is why scams generally start by leveraging an existing affiliation or setting up a new system of affiliation bonds (complete with new signifiers…think about how MLM setups create an appealing internal culture, replete with praise and rewards and little rituals…that’s what I’m getting at).

And I hate to say this, but…this is how otherwise good people suddenly get caught up in putting heads on pikes. You can retain the shallow markers—the signifiers—while deforming the values and deep meanings—the signified—and people will go along with it. Immoral things become moral by changing fixed principles while denying they’ve changed. And at some point, that makes cruelty an option, as you “define” people as outside of norms such that they deserve empathy or recognition as fellow people.

re: #491 The Ghost of a Flea

The thing is, this is shit everyone does to some degree.

“I know that guy, he’s okay because we’re into the same stuff” is standard fallacy. The bigger leap of “we are of the same substance, I find it hard to believe things that signify me could connect (through a like-me person) to horrible shit” is also normal, even if it gets pathological and gross pretty fast (see: Joe Paterno apologism).

But we have a societal movement right now in which the “truth” of shallow signifiers is specifically being elevated over other kinds of “truth.”

Just yesterday there was display of non-scientist politicians trolling a scientist about his field by spraying counterfactuals and flat “counterintuitive” claims with no attempt to refine their own thinking: like if someone believed all the different stuff they claimed in a Gish Gallop.

Again, this applies to more than one part of the reactionary “base”: in different issues, they use the same just-so story epistemology. If they sit around and tell each other a narrative, it becomes the truth.

re: #498 Anymouse 🌹

Not exactly.

Religions can create a basic set of premises and try to stick to them. They get into fights about orthodoxy because they struggle with meaning. That creates a lot of societal ugliness, but it’s a different kind of ugliness than this.

This is more like what distinguishes cult behavior from religious behavior: in the former, veracity emanates from affiliation and hierarchy within the affiliation group, such that “truth” becomes entirely flexible. Basically, there is no attempt to maintain a text from which meaning is derived. It’s conjuring with a book—invoking the title, dropping the one-liner quotes—rather than citing it.

Religions are fucked up because they have belief systems and they grind shit to kibble trying to enforce those beliefs. This is having no belief system, only a ritual and material culture in which anything can be justified. It’s collective narcissism with a paste-on mustache.

Russia’s wettest dream.

They found a weakness in our system of education and how we communicate and spread information and took advantage of it.

We are now so politically hapless that there is almost no opposition or interference in them pursuing their policies throughout the world.

This is not like the Cold War, where they are seeking to undermine our system to make us ripe for conquest, it is about to make us dysfunctional.

The real problem is schools. Who needs them? They cost billions of dollars a year and turnout irreligious malcontents and wiseasses who think they can talk back to their betters.

The only book anybody needs is the bible, and you don’t need to be able to read that.

That’s what the churches are for, to tell you what’s in the bible and how you must obey it.

For thousands of years most people couldn’t read or write and there were no mass shootings back then.

Food for thought, is it not?

Texas is an open-carry state. Open-carry doesn’t discriminate against crime scenes.

It has been argued if African-Americans open carried weapons states would end those laws. It isn’t on African-Americans to make themselves targets of wingnuts with guns however.

And what happens the moment someone uses the same symbols, or is a practitioner of the very thinking and uses those symbols to show they are safe and those symbols become a protection for someone with flag and hat and guns to have better access to go haywire and become a spree shooter themselves?

We’ve seen how that plays out: you claim it’s false until you can’t anymore, then retroactively establish they weren’t Of The Body in the first place.

Every time there’s a shooter, there’s immediately a story about how they’re actually a liberal, that all mass shooters are. But there’s also a story in which the shooting didn’t happen, and the shooting happened because of antidepressants/video games/lack of Jesus.

Basically, on Twitter we see a very fast version of what Leon Festinger described in “When Prophecy Fails.” With a side order of both sincere and cynical peddling of Stab In The Back mythology.

Basically, they’ll never be wrong because their central concepts are hollow. If a “family” is fucked up, it’s No True Family. If it’s their abortion, it’s different than all those evil whore abortions. The distinction is the only rule. And some people will not confront this even when there’s a body count.

Philando Castile is a recent example of how this is all about constant re-framing. He’s the opposite of flag and gun guy…in some way deserving on being shot in spite of all the details that suggest maybe he didn’t deserve to be shot. If there was truly a consistent standard, then these folks should be upset about Philando Castile, or at least acknowledge it as tragic or an error. But rather the NRA et al have found their out, such that his death is a breach of their fear of (1) authority figures striking out at gun owners, (2) more generally, abuse of power by “the government,” etc.

Same thing…Trayvon Martin versus George Zimmerman. For the latter to be “the good guy” as opposed to “just a guy who fucked up” or “a guy who maybe shouldn’t be following a kid at night” you have to keep an inconsistent standard of what constistutes threat…and that is exactly what’s happened.

I guess I need to just save these rants to plug in: If you want to defend yourself or your home with a gun, I guess that is your good right and nobody is threatening that.

But to deal with a live shooter in a public place you need training, experience, nerves of steel and good situational awareness. That is not a skills set you can purchase over the counter at the local sporting goods store, so stop pretending you can do any more good than harm.

No. Just no.

One of the reasons I call conservatism a religion.

Religion doesn’t change with new information. It has icons (guns) and mantras (good guys with guns stop bad guys with guns, cutting taxes improves the economy and raises revenue, &c), heretics and unbelievers (those who accept evidence for claims), &c. It has saints (Ronald of Reagan, Barry of Goldwater, &c). It opposes critical thinking because that leads to heresy.

It has sacrifices (whether they are the poor, immigrants, or dead students) to preserve the favour of the gods (donors such as the NRA and multinational businesses).

It has holy books that just like other religions, adherents don’t comprehend or cherry-pick (Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, the Constitution, &c).

It has always been thus, in every nation, at all times. And when that religious faith gets its grip on power, it will always take the nation down with it before it gives it up.

Non-conservatives (in my view) need to approach conservatism as if it was a religion. It needs to be treated as any other faith without evidence for its claims (and a whole lot of evidence against those claims).

I don’t even rise to the level of Cassandra though.

It excommunicates those who question the claims of conservatism.

Another conservative who would have kicked me as a homeless disabled vet, or simply said “I was mentally ill” or “I was worthless” or I should “pull myself up by my bootstraps.”

You might have guessed I despise with every fiber of my being every last tenet of conservative religion.

Hey hey hey, don’t talk down on jungle (at least the British variety).

No worries. That gun guy probably listens to Classic Rock.

Lauren Southern. Another one from the pretty blonde conservative factory.

Don’t forget Nazi Barbie doll Faith Goldy, who holds the dubious distinction of being fired from The Rebel of all places after appearing on a neo-Nazi podcast after Charlottesville.

Any putative benefit of Facebook (I can contact my family and share photos, catch up with old friends, &c) is belied by the fact it is being used to tear apart our country.

Yet Facebook users who find benefit from it will defend it as fiercely as gun nuts defend arsenals.

Both are poison.

I just got off the telephone with Wildcat Roofing and Firearms Supply (they’re the roofer around here). Waiting on a call back to see when they can come out and look at my roof.

They’ve been pretty busy after the tornado.

are you kidding me? wildcat roofing and firearms supply? that’s like texas drilling and brit milah services, or something.

It’s them evil Rock & Roll records with them Satanic messages when you play them backwards!

our rhythm guitarist at the time, of southern baptist roots, got prayed for on one of these evangelical “rock is evil” television shows. I have no idea why they were praying for the rhythm guitarist. They seriously needed to be praying for the lead guitarist. He was the one who was just absolutely wicked good.
