Right Wing/Russian Troll Farms Instantly Start Planting Fake News After Texas School Shooting

US News • Views: 43,503

And now, the 22nd incident of mass murder by gunfire at a US school since the beginning of this year.

More people have been killed in schools this year than American soldiers killed while serving in the military.

As usual, Republicans owned by the NRA are all over the place mouthing empty words about meaningless “thoughts and prayers.”

And the right wing/Russian troll farms instantly leapt into action to paint the shooter as a Hillary Clinton supporter linked to Antifa, creating several fraudulent Facebook pages and pumping out propaganda on Twitter.

UPDATE at 5/18/18 12:22:30 pm by Charles Johnson

Conspiracy peddler Mike Cernovich jumped at the opportunity to grift, of course. It’s interesting how far right conspiracy con men always seem to start grifting simultaneously with the appearance of fake accounts and Russian trolls.

I used to observe that there was a “quiet period” from the right, after one of these horrific mass murders, when they’d refrain from lying and spinning and DARVOing for a short time, as if they were worried about how they look to decent human beings.

Welp. That “quiet period” doesn’t exist any more.

Weren’t InfoWars and the like all on the FBI watch list for collusion during 2016? You would think that these people and their ilk would learn to distance themselves but they are right there should to shoulder with America’s adversaries. Conservative media is vile to the core with no redeemable qualities.

What were the differences that allowed Abbott, Cruz and Patrick never having to worry about all the openness of the schools they want to?

I don’t think that explains it all.

These people are emboldened. They have central support figures with some legitimacy—like Cernovich and Alex Jones. Their way of thinking has worked it way into the broader discourse of politics via the successive reactionary waves attaining power.

The opportunity cost of being the conscienceless dick that leaps out and starts lying to set the narrative is completely gone.

Before today, Santa Fe High School was famous in Ametican legal circles for being the subject of a Supreme Court case (Santa Fe ISD v. Doe), in which the Supremes found SFISD was in violation of the First Amendment right of high school students not to he subject to official prayers at football games. It is worth noting that the anonymous plaintiffs were Catholics and Mormons. At one point during the proceedings, SFISD had to be admonished by the district court judge to stop trying to discover who the plaintiffs were.

The whole thing is horrible, those poor kids, they just walked out recently and they have this happen. DAMMIT.

Indeed. Mass shooters tend to scout out their targets and know where they are best able to kill the most people.

Limiting ingress/egress doesn’t make anyone safer. It does the opposite since it means that if there’s a fire or other emergency, like say a tornado, those in the building have fewer routes to escape.

The sheer dumbfuckery of some people is staggering. Then again, when you get NRA cash, it papers over a lot of idiocy.

Yeah, this is something that can’t be stopped with common-sense gun laws that would get rid of semi-automatic weapons. There’s no way that there’s the political will to ban shotguns and pistols. That’s not going to happen.

Gun nuts are probably the most extreme example, but I can’t think of the last time there was a good faith proposal from the US right. The most recent near miss may well be some Republicans voting for the civil rights acts in the 1960s, but these were moderate Republicans (now extinct), so that doesn’t really count.

I hope you understand I wasn’t calling for an overall gun ban (and I think you do).

But I was cautioning how this will be used to say there is no reason to ban any type of guns because they all can be used.

And to take that the next step…someone will point out an AR style rifle will be a better tool to take on a shotgun and a classic pistol.

And with that…time to take a break. My head is swirling with all this. It is all so frustrating.

Noticed that right away. I’ve commented before that no mass shooter since the Texas Tower sniper way back in 1966 has used primarily manual action guns. We still don’t know what kind of shotgun the Santa Fe shooter used, a semi-auto is possible but not likely. To shoot 20 people with any kind of shotgun and revolver, though, he had to reload at least once, probably more. This is a more involved process than slapping a mag into an AR-15, too. The choice of weapon may well be the reason we have 20 casualties rather than 40 or 50 or more. It’s damn cold comfort but it is reality.

Leased 737-200 from a Mexican carrier used by Cubana Airlines on a domestic flight.

That is one OLD airplane, at least thirty years. CBS is reporting 3 survivors.

I do. I’m just pointing out that it’s impossible to solve this gun problem. We can at best reduce the body count by eliminating SA weapons.

If they were the father’s guns, then he should be held criminally liable for not securing them responsibly.
THAT would help solve/address the problem.

The Texas Tower and Las Vegas shootings were both from an elevated position but there were significant differences otherwise.

Perpetrator
Texas Tower: Expert marksman, Marine Corps trained.
Vegas: Amateur, self-trained

Weapons:
Texas Tower: bolt action rifle (Whitman had an M-1 carbine and two SA pistols but did not use them during the incident)
Vegas: bump-stocked semi-auto rifles

Casualties:
Texas Tower: 47
Vegas: 500+

Turn the water off? That’s crazy! We need to turn the water on MORE!

Saw some of my husband’s players. Big hugs. “You all ok?” Because Mom. “Yes, ma’am. We’re ok.”

Get to the clinic to get my son. “What took you so long?” “Front hall is very full, students are picking up graduation tickets.” “Oh yeah. I was really worried about you, Mom.” “Sweetheart, there was just a school shooting close to us. You’re allowed to be scared.”

It’s always horrific. It’s another layer of horror when it’s a 25 minute drive to that school. When your family has taught there. When you know exactly the path in the school to the gym.

Shooter used his dad’s legal guns, so the next thing will be shooter was mentally ill and school was not safe. BULLSHIT.

It’s time for Democrats to recognize that their strategy of not talking about Russia sucks. You can’t expect ordinary people to care when the victims don’t seem to care.

It probably doesn’t help to go straight toward impeachment either, the better approach is probably to say something along the lines of “Mueller needs to be given the time and space to complete his investigation, arbitrary timelines are inappropriate, the rule of law must prevail.” From there they can talk about holding the administration accountable (and it’s not just about Russia, but corruption in general - things like Pruitt at the EPA and self-dealing).

In the primaries, I think it’s reasonable to say that any Democrat running has those views. The Trump investigation (and that’s a better name than the Russia Investigation), and all the other stuff I said above is probably better suited for the general election.

I visited a friend in Montana. He and his wife keep handguns on their nightstands, and a shotgun behind the door. All loaded, none locked.* The thinking behind this is “You never need a gun, until you really, really need it!”

It makes a very limited amount of sense, if you believe that
1) you’ll never mishandle the gun and have a negligent discharge;
2) Neither you nor your wife nor any family member nor anyone who visits will ever mishandle any of the guns, or get so angry that they grab one in anger;
3) that your neighborhood is desperately crime-ridden and you’re in danger of a violent home invasion at any time when you’re home, but nobody will ever break into your home when you’re out.

There are rarely children at my house (too rarely since the grandkids live in faraway Massachusetts). Nevertheless I keep my guns in a locked safe. There is a log sheet in the safe where I record each and every time I remove one of them. Since I usually take a handgun with me on the farm, I end up doing this every day. I could just lock it in the glovebox of my pickup, but putting it back in the safe just eliminates another possible worry.

re: #180 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

There are rarely children at my house (too rarely since the grandkids live in faraway Massachusetts). Nevertheless I keep my guns in a locked safe. There is a log sheet in the safe where I record each and every time I remove one of them. Since I usually take a handgun with me on the farm, I end up doing this every day. I could just lock it in the glovebox of my pickup, but putting it back in the safe just eliminates another possible worry.

Problem critters?

Big mean ones, feral hogs. Also snakes, though I have never shot at one.

We also have coyotes but I am actually a big fan of those varmints. Most I might do is say, “Shoo! Get out of here and take a couple of piglets with you.”

re: #176 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Reminds me of the insane Aggie cultists who declared that the 12 students killed in the 1999 bonfire collapse had “sacrificed themselves for the Aggie spirit,” as though a grotesque alcohol-fueled tragedy would somehow advance whatever cause these people thought they had. I saw this characterization more than once, in letters to the editor and online, so I suspect that it originated from a common published source.

The kids didn’t make a sacrifice. The kids were made a sacrifice, on the altar of the Holy Gun.

They can also say that they were the victims of an attack by a foreign enemy, and demand that something be done about it. Like a victim of an attack would.

This kind of move is likely to backfire badly and I doubt Avenatti ends up being the one playing defense. Most Judges want the lawyers in front of them to get along, act like adults and conduct themselves professionally in their official business before the Court. Another way to put it is the Bar generally operates as one big social club. Avenatti’s zealous representation of his client wouldn’t generally bother any Judge because they can divorce the theatrics that take place outside the Courtroom with official business and conduct in front of them. This kind of petty griefer filing by Cohen’s team is exactly the kind of grade school “teacher teacher” petty bullshit that likely to grind the Court’s gears.

There’s a difference between “being a racist private citizen” and repeated incidents of verbal abuse and threats against people of color in public places.

I used to be against doxxing and such, but this shit has gotten so widespread, and so egregious, that I’m rethinking that. Public shaming was working, at least to some extent, in tamping down the most public expressions of racism, but with the election of Trump and his continuing dogwhistles and foghorns to white supremacists, these clowns feel like it’s their time.

It’s not.

A racist private citizen who threatened to inflict violence by the State under the color of law on innocent people for the crime of speaking Spanish.

Yes, maybe the backlash is a bit too much, and also maybe other racists need to see that society at large is finally putting consequences on the menu for white people who ‘til now have been free to persecute minorities.

Cue the “Blame the authorities. They ignored the warning signs!” Excuses.

Ok. This is such a shallow attempt to again avoid the real issue. GUNS.

What exactly should the authorities have done? Up until he started pulling the trigger, he had done nothing illegal. No due process? The cops can detain anyone for any reason? Take away his father’s guns because his kid was “troubled”? Force him to see a shrink?

These are, of course rhetorical questions. And definitely not solutions.

I do think that these increasingly obvious emolument violations, on top of his general assholishness, are changing the baseline view even among the Republicans in Congress; in fact, may already have done so for many of them. I think I understand the perspective of people not being comfortable with confronting this bigot lawyer. It goes against a worldview of etiquette and decorum. But we are dealing with people who’s idea of etiquette and decorum are much different. This has been a failing of the mainstream media for some time and contributes to the Both Sides journalism we’ve come to detest.

The reality is that the mob in front of the Bigot Lawyer’s house is there to confront his bigotry. Not his whiteness, his lawyerness, or anything else.

Bigot Lawyer’s bigotry is against people due their race/religion/language. The implied response is to shun the race/religion/language of the person.

This is a key distinction.

Given that virtually every newspaper in the US supported Hillary Clinton for president - giving or taking away an endorsement seems irrelevant at this point in time. And given they endorsed him without investigating the racism that appears to have existed all his life, why should anyone take notice of the paper’s view.

Definitely fair.
It’s certainly better than them not withdrawing the endorsement and not being very candid and public about why.

Cambridge Analytica files for bankruptcy amidst “siege” of negative attention

Cambridge Analytica LLC, the American arm of the London-based data analytics firm of the same name, filed for bankruptcy in federal court in New York on Friday.

The company submitted a voluntary formal petition for Chapter 7 bankruptcy—liquidation. That document reveals the company has between $1 and $10 million in debt with very little assets. On May 2, SCL Elections Ltd. and its other British affiliates filed similar “insolvency” documents with UK authorities.

Purely by coincidence, a new firm called Ambridge Canalytica was incorporated the same day.

Oops, my mistake. The new firm is called Emerdata.

Sure is - but so irrelevant. I don’t think I’ve ever voted for anyone based on a newspaper endorsement. I vote 1- for the person & if I have no idea about the candidates then 2 - for the party. 1 and 2 are 90% aligned.

Everything this regime does is amateur hour because they’re fixated on destroying functioning government and undermining civil and voting rights with a wink and nod by the GOP.

And doing so in bad faith, yet again, because they’re lying about why coal is becoming obsolete.

Okay, because I just can’t even deal with this school shooting right now, I am going to go wildly off-topic. I spent my evening playing with hazardous chemicals - namely, a 1-gallon bottle of roughly 30% hydrochloric acid that I picked up at the hardware store. I used it to clean lime and other deposits out of the radiator from Mrs. Fish’s big brown Lincoln, after which I flushed it thoroughly, the intent being to ensure that the good girl doesn’t overheat on the road later on. I have the remains in a 5-gallon bucket outside; I’m about 1/3 of the way through neutralizing the acid so I can dispose of it safely. Tomorrow I’ve got to make a run for some parts and some more baking soda.

Even if they passed a law, what’s it going to say? “Amazon has to pay extra.” I don’t think that’d pass muster on even the wingnuttiest court. And again, Bezos has more than enough money to keep it going in the courts ‘til Trump’s out of office.

A slight variation on something I’ve said before:

There’s very little mystery to school shootings, and we shouldn’t act as though they sit apart from more “normal” murders. It’s little men who can’t get their way, hurting people why declaring some version of “you made me do this.”

At lot of these murders are domestic murders that keep going after the target—the person who needs to be stripped of life, and thus punished for their choices by never getting to choose anything—is killed.

Not mythic. Nothing from a bestiary. Pathetic fragile dudes.

“How can I fuck with him?”

He could go after him through Blue Origin. He could tell United Launch Alliance that if they ever want to carry a government payload, they’ll buy the Rocketdyne AR-1 engine for their upcoming Vulcan rocket, where Blue Origin’s BE-4 is supposed to be the frontrunner. He could deny BO’s New Glenn rocket, if and when it ever flies, any government payloads.

I’m sure Vlad would much rather ULA continue buying the Kuznetsov RD-180, though, so maybe tRump will order them to scrap the Vulcan and stick with the Atlas V—the Vulcan’s only reason for being was to stop buying Russian engines anyway.

Dana Loesh’s purpose for the NRA is to draw public fire away from the NRA itself.

What the Parkland students did was to ignore Mrs. Loesh (other than to address her lies) to go straight after the NRA and the conservatives who worship at their altar.

It is a horrible tragedy today in Texas, but another school has been added to the call to end the religious relationship between conservatives and the NRA.

Paul Ryan having students arrested doesn’t look good for Ryan, but he doesn’t care; he got his libertarian tax boondoggle to cripple the country and is on the way out.

The single most common variety of mass shooting is a domestic murder in which a man kills his significant other or ex, plus their circle of close affiliates, in a single spree. Usually at home.

This shooting at Mount Zion? Waiting for the inevitable detail that somehow won’t get center stage.

And thinking unprintable, angry stuff.

I would be most remiss in not informing ya lizards that Turner Classic Movies is presently — on the east coast — airing Frank Launder’s incredibly wacky The Belles of St. Trinian’s (1954), starring the singular Alastair Sim in a dual role, the delightfully daffy Joyce Grenfell, and a lorry load of great British character actors

Heavy thunderstorms building in Colorado and Wyoming headed this way. A flood warning is up for the whole south of the Nebraska Panhandle, SE Wyoming, and N Colorado, with winter storm warnings in the mountains.

Yay?

That’s a bargain, really. My one percenter bro could buy it, no problem. I think he spent more money than that on his latest Vail house purchase.

re: #238 Blind Frog Belly White

There’s a difference between “being a racist private citizen” and repeated incidents of verbal abuse and threats against people of color in public places.

I used to be against doxxing and such, but this shit has gotten so widespread, and so egregious, that I’m rethinking that. Public shaming was working, at least to some extent, in tamping down the most public expressions of racism, but with the election of Trump and his continuing dogwhistles and foghorns to white supremacists, these clowns feel like it’s their time.

It’s not.

I have zero sympathy for the racist lawyer in question. A mariachi band and taco truck in front of his house is not a violent response.

Conservatism needs to be confronted with ridicule. It works; that’s why so many wingnuts complained about Michelle Wolf.

There was no chance that street party was going to turn violent protesting a bigot.

“I’m opposed to doxxing on principle” ignores the very real issue of racists, bigots, Nazis, and other anti-social elements using that very concern against decent society.

Your brother owns property in Vail? He’s a skier, I hope. If he isn’t… well, I’ll refrain from my very harsh criticism right now.

Last summer I saw James Hetfield in the Vail Safeway. I didn’t approach him, he was with his wife and just shopping. He bought a house on Forest Road, right next to the ski area.

Yeah, he’s a skier. He’s a biker, a runner, a hiker, a climber. He’s done the Leadville 100 a few times. He likes almost everything I like, but he can afford the very very best of everything, whereas, I get what I can get. Dude is full focused on making money. Always has been. Kind of admirable, in a way, but it doesn’t leave any room for self reflection. Naturally, he’s a Republican.

I learned many cool ski bum tricks of survival at Vail. I went to prom in Vail. I joined my first paying punk band in Vail (we opened for Guttermouth and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones!). If Vail is mentioned here at LGF I get quite nostalgic.

My family moved to Eagle County in 1986, that’s when I started skiing.

I’ve seen significant growth and increasing inequality. Both those things are acute.

re: #176 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Reminds me of the insane Aggie cultists who declared that the 12 students killed in the 1999 bonfire collapse had “sacrificed themselves for the Aggie spirit,” as though a grotesque alcohol-fueled tragedy would somehow advance whatever cause these people thought they had. I saw this characterization more than once, in letters to the editor and online, so I suspect that it originated from a common published source.

Look, some of our children have to die to allow us unmitigated freedom to arm ourselves like an army of one. But that is a sacrifice I’m willing to make.///

Interestingly, Mike Brown, while he may have killed Pluto as a planet, is one of the proponents of Planet 9, based on statistical analysis of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). Finding a large (5x size Earth) TNO would be an amazing feat.
