NASA Head Jim Bridenstine Says His Views on Climate Change Have Evolved, and He Now Accepts Humans Are the Cause

Science • Views: 29,301

Among all the other disastrous Trump appointments of people who want to destroy the agencies they head, the confirmation of Jim Bridenstine as NASA Administrator was an especially disheartening event, since during his hearing last November Bridenstine was pretty clearly a “soft” climate change denier tapped to head an agency that performs vital research into climate change:

When asked whether human activity was the primary cause of climate change, he said, “It’s going to depend on a lot of factors, and we’re still learning more about that every day.”

You might think that statement could be worse, except that this is invariably the line pushed by the Republican Party to appear less hard-core ideological, and keep the real agenda on the down low until they get into positions of power where they can enact legislation and drive policies to stymie action on climate change.

But the Washington Post has an article that actually surprised me (hard to do these days), because today in the Senate, Bridenstine was asked by Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) if he believed human-generated CO2 was the primary cause of climate change, and …

“The National Climate Assessment, that includes NASA, and it includes the Department of Energy, and it includes NOAA, has clearly stated it is extremely likely, [that] is the language they use, that human activity is the dominant cause of global warming, and I have no reason to doubt the science that comes from that,” Bridenstine said.

Schatz followed up by asking, “Is it fair to call this an evolution of your views?”

Bridenstine replied: “Yes.”

Now, I completely believe people can change their opinions about subjects like this. I can actually see a person who did, by looking in a mirror.

There was a time when my thinking on climate change was ill-informed at best. My main influence, I’m ashamed to admit, was Michael Crichton’s awful book “State of Fear,” with its seemingly convincing arguments — and charts! It had charts. It looked scientific and Crichton had a reputation for being good at this stuff, so I bought it. I wasn’t a scientist, and I wasn’t even especially into the politics of the issue.

But as I got increasingly uncomfortable with right wing anti-science views and their tendency to lie and obfuscate facts, I decided to really look into the actual evidence of climate change for myself. And the real literature by real scientists not affiliated with energy industries made it increasingly, terribly clear how genuinely dire the problem is.

If Bridenstine has gone through something similar, I welcome him to the side of the light. It’s better here. There’s more light for one thing.

But in today’s scorched earth hellscape of a political environment, it’s extremely rare for this to happen, and I can’t help suspecting a trap or a deception or a McGuffin, because… Trump.

Or the eggheads in NASA, NOAA and DOE showed him the full extent of the writing on the wall. Bonus points if DOD got involved.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that unions help workers across the board. A non-union shop, in theory, has to compete for labor with a union shop - if the union shop is offering higher wages and benefits, then the non-union shop has to offer better wages and benefits to get and keep workers.

As for the decline in union membership, that’s a whole other kettle of fish. Most people associate unions with manufacturing, and as our economy shifted away from manufacturing towards services over the last 30-40 years, unions lost ground because they weren’t necessarily in industries where workers were. Throw in the growing presences of automation replacing manufacturing jobs and the power of unions dropped even more.

Also, if this had been pitched as a TV show 5-10 years ago, nobody would have believed this kind of shit.

Not a surprise to me or the authors from what I can tell. Some new data became available and it helped inform some interesting counterpoints to existing narratives.

And that 11% number is high. I have to believe a sizable number of those are “unions in name only”. Educator and government workers unions have no power at all in Wisconsin and other states (excluding the police state of course). Dishwasher, hotel maid unions and the like have never had any real power either.

It has occurred to me that the yam isn’t even being original with all of this nepotism and cronyism.

Palin was infamous for it when she was governor.
I will never forget her choice to head up the State Division of Agriculture: Franci “I like Cows” Havemeister.

So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.

Ms. Havemeister was one of at least five schoolmates Ms. Palin hired, often at salaries far exceeding their private sector wages.

When Ms. Palin had to cut her first state budget, she avoided the legion of frustrated legislators and mayors. Instead, she huddled with her budget director and her husband, Todd, an oil field worker who is not a state employee, and vetoed millions of dollars of legislative projects.

Unions were portrayed as gangs of thugs oppressing an enterprising owner. But a modern corporation can have thousands of owners. But we see it as the paragon of free enterprise to let individuals with limited incomes and assets negotiate for wages, working conditions and benefits with multi-million-dollar entities.

I remember when Bush père decided to appoint Dan Goldin to head NASA. His chief of staff came back “We’ve found out he’s a Democrat!” Bush says: “Oh really? Well, at least they can’t accuse us of politicizing it” and appointed him anyway. Can you imagine this or any other GOP administration doing that now? Bridenstine was appointed for ideological loyalty (just like Kelly and Griffin). Now that he’s violated that, he’ll be out soon.

The easiest way for players to circumvent the NFL’s “stand for the anthem” orders.

The howling freakout from the owners and the usual suspects would also be a great reminder that the issues Carlos and Smith protested are still with us. And it’d emphasize the racism of the NFL’s owners.

I don’t think that will work. The new policy is written around the subjective catch-all of “respect”, it’s not just about kneeling.

I don’t think it’s a yardage penalty. It’s financial. The team is fined. Some owners said they’d pay the fines.

About the anthem protests, while I’m fully on board with the players’ sentiment, I’ve been worried all along that there is no obvious goal. How do you measure an end to police brutality, or a significant decrease, or whatever?

I’m no expert on political protest, but it seems to me that if there is no definable and easily explainable target, the protests have to go on forever, or, more realistically, they eventually peter out.

But let me stress again that I agree wholeheartedly with their point of view and that they have the freedom to express it.

I just don’t know what their endgame is, and that worries me.

Stormy Daniels was granted the keys to the Californian city of West Hollywood on Wednesday to celebrate her court battle with President Donald Trump over a sexual encounter she claims they had more than a decade ago.

The porn star is suing Trump, who denies the fling, to invalidate a non-disclosure agreement made days before the 2016 presidential election that prevents her from discussing the case.

“I’m not really sure what the key opens. I’m hoping it’s the wine cellar,” Daniels joked at a ceremony at an erotic apparel store, struggling to make herself heard over the clamor of press photographers.

“This community has a history of standing up to bullies and speaking truth to power, and I’m so lucky to be a part of it. I am elated and honored.”

Daniels, 39, was being celebrated for her “leadership in the #RESIST movement,” said officials in West Hollywood, who proclaimed “Stormy Daniels Day” at the raucous presentation.

“Out of all the chaos of the Trump administration, our own Lady Godiva appeared on horseback,” West Hollywood mayor John Duran said.

Border Patrol union says agents were “ambushed” but questions remain

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was tracking a group of undocumented immigrants when he was ambushed in a rock attack, a spokesman for the agency’s national union said.

Agent Rogelio Martinez, 36, of El Paso, died Sunday after he and his Big Bend sector partner responded to activity near Interstate 10 in the Van Horn area, which is about 120 miles east of El Paso.

“We do believe it was an ambush. It was not random activity,” said Chris Cabrera, spokesman for the National Border Patrol Council union.

The best comment on the WaPo article:

Ironically the New York Times — particularly the loathsome Dean Baquet, the smarmy Maggie Haberman, whose family is so tight with the Kushners in Manhattan, and the time-expired snippy-princess mean girl Maureen Dowd, but including many others — played a very big role in getting Trump elected, to our eternal national disgrace. And with double-irony, because they were so clever that they thought he could never win, and so there was no risk to going in on Hillary Clinton with both boots, stomping and raking the sharp hobnails over and over again.

This won’t be much of a documentary if it doesn’t document THAT. Or maybe — given the assurances that these filmmakers must have had to give for their access to the inner workings of the Times — it will need to be somebody else’s honest and independent production, and I’ve already got the title for it:

“BUT HER EMAILS!”

(I won’t be watching, thank you very much.)

Future Publix-censored cake decoration.

Ya know, this isn’t the first time Publix in south by dog carolina has refused to make a cake as requested. For our election night party in 2016, we went in to order a Hillary cake and the lady in the bakery department said they’d be glad to do a Trump cake, but would not do a Hillary cake. They gave us some bullshit about the logo (which we were willing to forego) and tap-danced around, but we ended up going to Costco and getting the cake we wanted.

Consider yourselves lucky. A basket like that which does not contain a bag of Doritos and package of M&Ms is just fucking cruel.
