I increasingly get the sense that, although Trump himself will not be indicted or impeached (I see him ending his days mired in dementia in Mar-a-lago), his empire is going to go down in flames, and likely his sons and son in law too.

It does seem likely that the Cohen enterprise is linked to, if not a direct part of the Trump organization, and either or both are up to their necks in all hinds of gangsterish business.

When the authorizes are finished investigating the criminal enterprise that is the Trump Organization, it will will be razed to the ground, and most of Trump’s money will be gone, eaten up in fine, legal fees, RICO, whatever.

And politically there is nothing he can do.

Maybe worse than impeachment, that will be the best punishment for him: see his empire destroyed.

A fair enough point; impeachment would probably serve to make him into some kind of GOP martyr and of course, his deluded supporters would certainly consider a victim of a colossal frame-up - indeed, I’m fairly sure they already do.

In my opinion, he has no money—at least he had no money when he was elected. I’m sure the grifting since then has yielded millions, but he undoubtedly owes more than could be paid off even in four years of robbing the country blind.

Him being definitively unbranded would be the type of ego injury to really hurt him and I’d love that. But his empire was always a paper tiger so if something really consequential and important is to happen it should involve the real power and muscle behind all of this global corruption too. And whew… that’s a tall order.

He needs to go ASAP based on the fascism alone but we’ve uncovered a whole lot in looking at how he was installed and we certainly shouldn’t ignore that.

IIRC, Deutsche Bank reckoned that Trump was worth a little shy of $800 million - but that was in 2005, which was pretty much at the height of the real estate bubble.

I think it’s fair to point out that it was in their interest to validate a substantial sum of wealth for him. They were one of the few traditional western banking institutions that was still willing to deal with him. It was dirty then and it’s even dirtier in hindsight. We’ve learned a lot about both entities since then.

Would be nice if we could examine his taxes.

At least it is a nice cooler lower humidity morning…like an actual spring day.

So, is Nunes and The Freedumb Caucus gang going to get away with their BS today, or will Rosenstein and the DOJ manage to hold them off?

Maybe Rosenstein can give them a big box of documents, all they could have hoped for, and then Nunes and gang dig in only to find they are all redacted with big blocks of black nothingness all over.

They get the documents the rest of the public get to see right now as the investigation goes on.

Two sisters wed two brothers. Sibling rivalry and a grudge led to murder.

Long story short: One of the sisters was jealous of the other sister, and felt that the other sister had gotten more of an inheritance than her, so she shot the other one. She had hoped to kill herself, but her brother-in-law got the gun from her. She was convicted of premeditated murder.

Meet service members entrusted with guarding nuclear missiles that are among the most powerful in America’s arsenal. Air Force records obtained by The Associated Press show they bought, distributed and used the hallucinogen LSD and other mind-altering illegal drugs as part of a ring that operated undetected for months on a highly secure military base in Wyoming. One piece of good news in Kentucky, as the teacher backlash struck; the Kentucky House GOP leader lost his primary to a math teacher. kentucky.com

Infuriating. Voter ignorance. Shell is the guy who lost.

John East, a Lancaster resident who farms and works at a factory, said he voted for Shell. He said he did not know a lot about the pension issue and that it was not a significant factor in how he voted.

Tommy Robison and his wife Karla Robison, a retired special education teacher, said they didn’t like the process used to get the pension changes through, but both voted for Schell, in part because they know him and didn’t know Brenda.

Tommy Robison said its appears Shell got used by other lawmakers in the pension debate. “He’s a good guy. I’ll give him one more chance,” he said.

And BTW what the hell does this shit have to do with guns? Oh I get, you’re just a bunch of sutpid right wing hacks who care only about aiding the far right.

re: #201 MsJ

From the article:

By keeping its collective mouth shut, the Federalist Society—a nationwide network of conservative lawyers with its power base in D.C.—has amassed huge influence in the Trump administration, essentially hand-selecting not only Gorsuch but recruiting ultraconservative judges to fill vacancies on appellate courts on down. It’s a status the organization does not want to jeopardize through rash tweets or the signing of petitions that might make one feel good on issues that matter less to them than a complete reorientation of the federal bench.

The executive vice president of the Federalist Society, Leonard Leo, has called around to prominent lawyers and funders in town, warning them not to get on the wrong side of the Trump administration, according to a source who was briefed on the calls. After all, Leo expects to play a lead role in at least one more Supreme Court pick during Trump’s tenure. (Leo did not return calls for comment.)

At times, the society has even broken with the mainstream of the conservative legal establishment in its effort to stand with the administration. On Friday, for instance, the Federalist Society is hosting a call “examining the legality of the Mueller Investigation.” The featured speaker is Steven Calabresi, a law professor and co-founder of the organization who has argued that Mueller’s probe is unconstitutional. Calabresi also happens to be a friend of Conway’s—it’s a small, Federalist Society world, after all.

….

“This is not Mary Matalin and James Carville,” said former Harvard University Law professor Alan Dershowitz, a lifelong Democrat who has become one of Trump’s main legal defenders on cable news. “These are both conservative Republicans. One of them has a job to do, and she has to only say positive things. He doesn’t have a job to do. Each one has to be judged by the job, and the context. I could see someone saying, ‘My wife does this, so I’m going to keep my mouth shut.’ But he’s not that kind of guy.”

Dershowitz doesn’t know George Conway personally, only by way of reputation. But as someone with a similar contrarian streak, Dershowitz said he understands why George Conway can’t just shut up. “I have friends who say, ‘Everything you say is right, but you should shut the fuck up,’” said Dershowitz. “The answer to that is, people like Conway and me, we can’t. Part of being married is being an independent person.”

How do you stay married to someone like that? I can’t even imagine remaining married to someone who could vote for trump. While I love my husband, I would have divorced him for it would have shown that our values are completely at odds with each other. That’s not something I could live with.

As the parent of a three year-old I’m very familiar with the idea of offering exuberant praise for banal accomplishments but it’s legitimately odd how many people want to apply that philosophy to the President of the United States.

a bit OT, but as a parent, I find that kids do not need praise, just recognition:

“Wow! You drew a house, and there’s smoke coming out the chimney and blue flowers just like the ones mommy’s garden!” rings better than any praise in their little ears.

Trump’s bluster about how “massive” his penis nuclear force is misses a major point that Kim is well aware of. Kim doesn’t need thousands of missiles to deter us. If he has a handful of ICBMs that can hit Chicago, Seattle and Honolulu, he’s got all the deterrence he needs to defend himself from a US attack, regardless of how many times we can make the rubble of Pyongyang bounce.

‘Brieing’ Is a New Trend Where Middle-Aged Women Eat MDMA Wrapped in Cheese (Vice, more at the link):

If you’re a middle-aged woman with a tremendous amount of disposable income, it’s so hard to be satisfied, you know? Like, how does one find fulfillment, especially in those empty hours between riding your Peloton and obsessively refreshing the New Arrivals section on the Eileen Fisher website? Apparently, the answer is drugs!

To be fair, the answer to that question is usually drugs, but instead of shaking a couple of their son’s Adderalls out into their impeccably moisturized hands, a group of upper class British women have started dosing themselves with MDMA… wrapped in cheese.

A 50-year-old, self-described businesswoman confessed to Metro that she’s started hosting MDMA parties in her London home, evenings when her friends come over and they pop party drugs that they’ve crammed into pieces of Brie. (Apparently, this woman treats her friends like they’re Cavalier King Charles Spaniels who have to be tricked into taking their heartworm pills.)

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump cancelled the summit with North Korea. He did so without consulting our allies in the region. South Korea was blindsided by the move.

What a surprise.

Trump is entirely reactionary and doesn’t give any thought to the consequences of his actions.

That’s how he got into this mess in the first place, and that’s how he got to where we are now.

He acted without consulting his experts before agreeing to a summit with North Korea without getting North Korea to agree to first dismantle their nuclear program before the talks. Now, he walks away without telling South Korea first.

Trump’s foreign policy is a nonstop bulkshit dump that helps no one but our rivals and enemies while ceding US leadership on the world stage to dictators, despots, and rivals to the US.

Trump’s actions elevated Kim to an equal by signaling he was open to direct talks while dropping the precondition that NK first get rid of its nukes. Trump gave North Korea what it’s wanted and North Korea gave up nothing in return.

Now Trump cancels the summit and North Korea can claim that the US sabotaged the summit and that North Korea was open to talks.

Trump’s managed the triple Lindy of negotiating himself into a paper bag and being unable to extricate himself from same. He’s undermined US national security, elevated a security threat in North Korea to being a greater menace in the region, screwed our allies, and left a leadership vacuum in one fell swoop.

He gives North Korea leverage they don’t deserve.
He gives them a better negotiating posture without gaining something for the US.
He gives them a better military posture than they had before.
He gives Jong Un a domestic win with treatment as an equal/parity on international stage.
He gives Jong Un a win with China, because he looks reasonable compared to Trump.

He screws South Korea and Japan, who are well within range of North Korean artillery/missiles/nukes.

Side note about Nancy Grace.

I watched her show when I was in my early 20s (when she was on HLN). And they were talking about the story when the husband on the honeymoon apparently pushed his wife off the cruise ship they were on etc etc. The thing they got stuck on was absinthe (that they were apparently drinking during this event). Nancy didn’t know what it was though she brought it up and didn’t do any research. It is the first and only time I’ve ever emailed a news show - just to tell her how horrible she was that if she was going to act smart that she should do her damn research before the show.

I cheered when Nancy was kicked off TV for being horrible.

She is still on TV being terrible, just another show, another station.

That’s because as long as it remains within the APO/FPO system, it is not using the Post Office. The military is shipping packages using military logistics.

That said, mail ranks last on military shipments, as military needs all outrank the mail.

There’s always tradeoffs. Especially if you’re stationed in the UK and have a Japanese car to buy parts for and have a friend or two stationed in either Okinawa or Kanagawa Prefecture to ship the parts over to you and avoid VAT charges that way.

Trump screws the diplomatic pooch.

Yeah, so much winning.

Any bets as to whether we look back on this day as when we started down the road to catastrophe?

Silva’s family has questioned why he was shot. The Orlando Police Department has a policy against firing into vehicles, though police Chief John Mina has said he believed the officers were in fear for their lives when they opened fire.

Fucking police and their Get Out Of Murder card.

Its not the shoplifters who should be charged with murder.

But the officers feared for their lives according to the chief, and wtf is “resisting arrest without violence?” They shoplifted clothes from Marshall’s (probably some on sale Ivanka crap) and now they’re not sure the value of what was shoplifted rises to the grand theft level to even make it a felony. What a total load of crap.

I stopped watching football over CTE.

That the league shows that they’re run by a bunch of white guys who don’t want to upset the bigot in chief and will penalize players who kneel in protest of racial discrimination and police brutality only reinforces the fact that the league is in deep denial.

They deny that there are real problems in society and that the white owners don’t give a shit about the players who are majority black. They’re interchangeable cogs who can be replaced when they break down.

Chris Long and his brother Kyle and father Howie are good people. Kyle befriended a kid in the Chicago area who was bullied. And Chris is absolutely right that this is just about not angering Trump. I’m really disappointed by this. I know the league’s got other problems but this reinforces it.

I am an auto racing fan, but I have never been a big NASCAR stock car racing fan.

In the 90s NASCAR grew to huge ratings and attendance. They even caught the attention of GW Bush who campaigned to get the votes of the NASCAR dads. They couldn’t enlarge facilities enough. Areas around the tracks were able to charge ridiculous hotel rates and raise costs in the area for things like gas and food. They couldn’t sell NASCAR rated crap fast enough.

And then they started to mess with their product. They changed rules to what amounted to Pro Wrestling BS. Then the economy took a downturn and people no longer could afford all those high prices.

Today…NASCAR has a hard time getting their venues 1/4 full in attendance. Their TV viewings are way down.

It has recently been stated the France family (owners of NASCAR and a lot of the tracks) have it up for sale. 20 years ago they would never have considered it.

Sure the reasons are different but the outcomes may not be; the NFL is in danger of ending up like NASCAR.

The average fan may just say screw all this BS. Screw the rules changes, the costs, the politics…just screw it. And then they move on to something else.

Good luck NFL. You may have just killed a lot of your fan base. That would be Blacks and the people that are sympathetic to their kneeling stand about injustice.

Kiss Trumps ass…suffer the consequences.

And I heard yesterday; the top 50 TV markets for the NFL do not care one bit about the flag bullshit. It is the little markets in the rural states that are bitching. You gonna cater to them and Trump and make your biggest group of customers consider giving up on pro football?

You are.

…Bari Weiss’ New York Times op-ed/fawning profile, “Meet the Renegades of the Intellectual Dark Web.” Weiss uses the nation’s paper of record to introduce audiences to a group of people whose voices are supposedly being kept out of mainstream institutions, but who for some reason I seem to hear about all the damn time.

The “intellectual dark web” is neither on the dark web nor comprised of intellectuals. It is a phrase coined by one of Peter Thiel’s deputies to describe a group of people who share the following traits in common: (1) they are bitter about and feel persecuted by Leftist Social Justice Identity Politics, which they think is silencing important truths and (2) they inhabit the internet, disseminating their opinions through podcasts, YouTube, Patreon, etc. The group includes: Eric Weinstein, the aforementioned Thiel subordinate; vacuous charlatan Jordan Peterson; cool kids’ philosopher Ben Shapiro; deferential interview host Dave Rubin; ex-neuroscientist Sam Harris; former Man Show host Joe Rogan; American Enterprise Institute scholar Christina Hoff Sommers; and former Evergreen State University professors Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying.
