So Much Winning: After Touting Himself for the Nobel Peace Prize and Commissioning Medals, Trump Cancels Nuclear Summit With Kim Jong Un

The president is an idiot
Politics • Views: 35,491

This is so utterly pathetic it makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time: Trump cancels nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

President Trump on Thursday canceled a summit next month with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, citing “tremendous anger and open hostility” from the rogue nation in a letter explaining his abrupt decision.

“I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote to Kim in a letter the White House released Thursday morning.

Here’s the absurdly childish letter Trump released. You can tell he wrote it himself because it’s so awkward and moronic.

Oh, and if you paid actual money for one of Trump’s scam “summit coins“…

Trump never should have agreed to the summit in the first place because he elevated North Korea to parity all by dropping the precondition North Korea dismantle its nuclear program first.

But with that in the bag and US leverage vastly reduced, Trump doubled down on the derp all while North Korea used new-found leverage to make demands on South Korea, the US, and Japan to stop military drills and other actions.

North Korea gained while the US lost. Trump had so many unforced errors, and the latest was in canceling the summit and making North Korea look like the reasonable ones - Jong Un can go back to his own country and claim he’s got the power and prestige and is the rational one here, while Trump and the US can’t be trusted.

And he’d be right. Trump can’t be trusted and is irrational.

Nothing Trump’s done has improved US national security. The opposite is true: Trump has repeatedly undermined our national security with irrational and reactionary responses to outside stimulus. At same time, he’s thrown our allies under the bus and left them hanging - as they did today by not giving any advance notice to South Korea that we’re canceling the summit.

Trump is a menace to everything the US stands for - or should stand for.

And the benefits all inure to our enemies and rivals on the international stage, whether it’s Russia, China, or rogues like North Korea or Iran.

Man, New York sports radio is hammering the NFL, and by extension Trump, on the new rule.

Michael Kay just brought up Trump’s ‘maybe you shouldn’t be in the country’ quote and said

‘Trump couldn’t buy an NFL football team, but now he owns the league.’

For a station (WEPN, ESPN’s NY affiliate) with a very strict ‘no politics’ rule, they are hammering away on this for two days now.

That letter is so poorly written that it just drives me nuts. Switching from “we” to “I” is so incredibly annoying and easy to fix with a simple proof reading. The grammar is horrendous in general, but this sentence makes me want to run full speed into a brick wall and then over a cliff:

“We were informed that the meeting was requested by North Korea, but that to us is totally irrelevant.”

If that was included in a ninth grade essay, it’d get a C-.

Trump can keep pretending to be Louis XIV (“L’Etat, c’est moi”), but the rest of us have an obligation to come correct on facts and circumstances. If this grand experiment of ours is to survive Trump, it is imperative that we do not allow this con man to gaslight history.

I’m not sure what difference Flood’s designation makes in this particular case, but I believe it will matter when the cards are on the table.

It figures that the NRA thinks that the 1A is absolute - when it isn’t, while the very plain English of the 2A sets regulation in the very first sentence: “A well regulated militia…”

It’s just the NRA and GOP have written that out of the law despite their claims that they’re originalists/contextualists. They want their guns sold, and they don’t care about the body count.

This is just so much more of the usual smoke screen.

The right wing will not engage is substantive discussion, or even tell the truth, because it is committed to a massive outburst of violence, including, if possible, the wholesale massacre of minorities, immigrants, and political opponents. Between the NRA’s insurrectionist sales pitch, the Russian-sponsored conspiracy industry’s incitement, and the evangelicals’ apocalyptic fantasies, they have been preparing the ground for it for years. Koch sponsored fake history and Fox propaganda convince them their enemies are helpless and Rambo fantasies that they can defeat the regular army. The pot is bubbling and it is likely to boil over if the evil right is defeated in November, certainly in 2020.

First, these guys can pay any fines that are handed down (to say nothing of the fact that some teams have already announced that they would pay the fines on behalf of the players). That was my thought earlier as well: What is the wingnut response going to be when the season starts and one or more teams stay in the locker room through the Anthem rather than taking the field? They’re gonna loose what little of their minds remain and demand the League change the rules again to say that they can’t do that.

This is what I simply do not get: what is actually getting fucking disrupted by this action? What does it actually fucking hurt? What does it actually do to disturb the game? It’s not even like wearing a political sticker or pin in an office job or anything, it’s not a lingering presence through their entire job. It’s a matter of a minute’s action, but somehow it’s the greatest fucking treason ever and needs to be made an example of because fuckers like Bongino believe they literally decide what is right in America or not.

The sad fucking thing is that he may be right on that measure, because our entire civil society seems to have surrendered to the alt-right and the NRA.

Yes I have. And I’ve seen others on the Twitters saying it yesterday and today. Not sure what prompted it.

“We just totally blew up this summit over some mean words said about Mikey, but we’re totally open to Kim wanting to restart the talks!”

It’s like everything else Donny does, it’s dominance politics. He does not negotiate fairly with equals, he dictates terms to those he views as weaker than him. So with the talks approaching quick and no movement on Kim’s part to acknowledge Donny’s “strength,” he saw himself heading into talks that would have shown just how weak his hand was. So he’s now trying to regain the position of dominance by demanding Kim grovel for his favor.

re: #66 Citizen K

It drives me crazy that the narrative was successfully switched to a discussion of “disrespecting the flag”. First, the faux-patriotism on display at football games is a direct result of military paying the NFL millions so that the players could be used as props. They shouldn’t have to be there at all. Outside of the military, what other industry plays the anthem on the regular?

Second, the entire point was simply to say “I’m doing a small thing in order to make you notice me. And when you notice, I want you to remember that we have significant racial equality issues in this country.” That’s it. And people have the audacity to call the players snowflakes.

Third, that these people unironically claim to be constitutionalists while slamming an exercise of free speech is mind boggling to me (I do, of course, understand that the NFL is well within its rights to prohibit any type of speech it so chooses, but it is a form of censorship that would generally be unlawful if the gov’t imposed it).

The whole thing pisses me off.

That letter is so poorly written that it just drives me nuts. Switching from “we” to “I” is so incredibly annoying and easy to fix with a simple proof reading. The grammar is horrendous in general, but this sentence makes me want to run full speed into a brick wall and then over a cliff:

If that was included in a ninth grade essay, it’d get a C-.

And it might have been written this way on purpose by Trump’s staff to “trigger libs”!

I can’t think of an instance where kneeling, as an action, is an act of dishonor. To the contrary, the act of kneeling in Western Civilization is an admission of honor (going to one knee to propose, going to kneel to accept knighthood, going to one knee to show fealty, going to one knee to honor an injured football player).

This outrage is artificial and made up.

That was my thought earlier as well: What is the wingnut response going to be when the season starts and one or more teams stay in the locker room through the Anthem rather than taking the field? They’re gonna loose what little of their minds remain and demand the League change the rules again to say that they can’t do that.

That’s what I’m hoping to see, entire teams staying off the field. Would the NFL lose the DoD promo funds if they did? Like back before they were ever brought out in the first place?

There are 9 countries with nuclear weapons. India and Pakistan aren’t giving up their weapons (and arguably, that’s the only thing preventing a war between them), Israel won’t even admit that it has any. North Korea has seen that having nuclear weapons gives them a seat at the table (and a helluva shield against invasion, regardless of how realistic invasion actually is). The other five nations are permanent members of the security counsel and are, generally, smart enough to know that using nuclear weapons won’t end well.

I’d love to see worldwide disarmament of nuclear weapons, but this little thing called “reality” isn’t going to allow for that anytime soon.

I’ll say this. I have so much more respect for Lebron James as a man than Michael Jordan. Not only is he a better father and husband but he’s a flat out better person, he’s not afraid to speak out for causes he deems important. People who want athletes to shut up and play. You are the same people who made Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump into national political figures because you enjoyed hearing what they had to say. Lebron merely speaks as a citizen and we have to hear stupid Laura Ingraham tell him to shut up and dribble. He’s not there to entertain you. He’s there for himself and if he wants to voice his opinion, I welcome it.

We’ll be lucky if Trump’s version of “diplomacy” does not inspire a bunch more nations to develop their own nukes. In Australia, for example, a few right wing cranks have always advocated an independent nuclear capability. Now, though, this has seeped past the bounds of crankery since no one has an answer to the obvious question of what to do now that they can’t count on the yanks. Imagine the behind-the-scenes discussions in the defense ministries of Japan, Singapore, or Taiwan, let alone South Korea. Someone suggested blacks need to stop viewing the game until it changes. It will take a vocal group to change it, a group indicating that neither their money nor time will go toward the game.

Truly.

I don’t support the owner’s decision but I understand it, and I think it only partly relates to Trump’s ranting about the issue. They got hurt in the pocketbook last year (OK, about as hurt as multibillionaires can be) and they don’t want a repeat of that.

All evidence suggests that a drop in viewership had nothing to do with anthem protests. They are rich white men who believe what most rich white men in America believe - that rural white people are the most important people in the country, and that they should be catered to above all else. They saw the same channels and read the same articles that reinforced this view, and decided to do their part to impose authoritarianism. Their decision has almost everything to do with Trump’s ranting, because the same channels that they watch and follow drove Trump’s ranting.

The scary part is at the rate we’re going, we just might get that. The backsliding is at light speed at this point, and unless this November arrests the momentum somehow, we’re going to be an unrecognizable country come 2020, and certainly a whiter and more racist one than we already even are.

People should be glad Avenatti exposes Trump team tactics and doesn’t back down.

The reality is Deutsch has become an excuse maker for poor Micheal Cohen.

I personally think that Japan has a secret stash of devices that can be turned into full blown weapons in a matter of hours, if not minutes, “the turn of a screwdriver away.”

Every one of our allies is likely having the same discussion behind closed doors: “How do we prepare for a post-US world?” How do you prepare for a world where America’s might is unreliable, how you could be left flapping in the wind if the Baby-in-Chief decides you didn’t pay your protection money this month, and who’s going to have your back when the Russian Bear comes calling? In Europe, in Asia, in the Middle East, and even in South America, pro-US governments are going to have to start planning for a future where they can’t expect the cavalry to come riding in under Ol’ Glory.

All this stupid “Is Trump using this a a negotiating tactic”? bullshit on cable news is making me sick. Trump is not negotiating with l’il Kim, he was in over his head from the beginning.

My God, did he really think one meeting and Boom, no more nukes?
As much as I despise Trump, I was really hoping he would be serious for once and put in the hard work this will require. I know that sounds naive but just think about all the praise he would undoubtedly receive. I was hoping his ego would guide him to do better. But then he hired John Bolton and BOOM. Plus the fact that he is just a fucking idiot.

You’re right about the nihilist part, and wanting to destroy the world, but I’m not sure about the second part. From his wikipedia page:

He declared himself in an interview with Edward Luce of the Financial Times in 2007 to be a “Goldwater conservative”, as opposed to being a neoconservative. He also pointed out that he was a follower of Edmund Burke. He also said “I have always been a conservative. The idea of big-government conservatism has more neocon adherents than from unmodified conservatives.”

He’s more of a “just want to watch the world burn” types, I think. Probably the most generous reading of him is that he’s the sort of person who has a hammer (the US military) and thus sees every problem as a nail (bomb the shit out of it and then invade).

The problem is the cops in this, The US Congress led by Republicans, have decided they are not going to do anything. Apparently the people in the states and districts that voted the Republicans in are fine with that.

It is up to the American voters to do everything we can to change it. ALL Republicans need to go…sooner is better.

I’m not sure I believe this. How could a guy who hangs with CCJ be broke?

George Zimmerman, who shot dead the Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, is $2.5m in debt and no income, according to court documents.

Zimmerman’s finances were made public as part of a misdemeanor stalking case where he is accused of sending threatening text messages to a private investigator. Zimmerman filed paperwork about his financial situation in the case, listing that he is unemployed and has no money in cash, bank accounts or equity on property.

In 2016 Zimmerman sold the gun he used to murder Trayvon Martin for $250,000 to ” a woman who was giving the gun as a birthday present to her son.”

Too bad Racist McShootface backed out of his bid of $65 million. Even Zimmerman couldn’t go through that much coke in a couple of years.

I don’t support the owner’s decision but I understand it, and I think it only partly relates to Trump’s ranting about the issue. They got hurt in the pocketbook last year (OK, about as hurt as multibillionaires can be) and they don’t want a repeat of that.

And you care that they “got hurt in the pocket book”. I sure hope they do - The concept of individuals owning sporting teams is repulsive to me & if this causes them to lose money - I’m twice happy, once for the players having the right to protest & once for the owners losing.

Tony Schwartz the author of The Art of the Deal and a huge critic of Trump just said something very important and may be something many of us here at LGF need to take to heart and use to steel us for the political war we are in. He is on Ari Melber’s The Beat

He said Trump always works knowing he has no conscience and no morals. The end is the means…nothing else counts but self satisfaction of the win. There is nothing that moderates Trump. He has no controls.

And he pointed out that is also meant to frustrate people that have both a conscience and morals.

But frustration is our enemy as it makes people clam up and give up.

Don’t let it frustrate you…Trump wins.

Hardball was probably the first cable news show I watched fairly regularly back in the late 90s. It’s kind of hard to believe it’s been on for over 20 years. Over the years I’d sort of drift in and out on the show.

They want all other countries to comply with our will, but they don’t want America to be the world’s policemen. They want protectionism but they don’t want to pay more for stuff. They want regime change, but they don’t want to do nation-building. They want other nations to be democracies, but only if they don’t choose people we don’t like.

I have given up on watching Tweety. I did tonight based on his rant he did at the close of his show last night.

I did a comment on that earlier with the video of his rant.

Go to this link to watch if you so desire: Comment with video of Chris Mathews rant

It was a good rant. With what happened today I thought he would still be heated.

And the only reason I watched him in the past is the same reason I watch Morning Joke for the first half hour some days. They all have some good guests on that make some pretty good points and mention things we do not see on many other media outlets.

I can turn things off and on in my head pretty easily. I can weed out the chaff to get to the kernels of truth.

It’s like the comment above where I mention author Tony Schwartz saying if you get frustrated you give up. I am not giving up. I want to see those little kernels in a hope that one or two break out and start to take Trump down. I can ignore Tweety to get a crack or some good reporting from David Corn. Or, I could miss it all.
