Just saw him speaking at yet another NRA thing on a CSPAN channel. “Middle America is tired of them attacking us and taking away our speech and we are RISING” [CLICK]. He sounds like he was spawned at one of those JV think tanks that the far right has been creating since the 80s.

It’s almost as if cultures don’t change over time, adapting and/or adopting elements of others while discarding inefficient/unjust/ineffective portions of its own. Which explains why we all live in city-states ruled by kings who occasionally war with each other and then trade their children in marriages for a lasting peace…

oh, wait…

It is, at worst, the Orwellian destruction of all societal values and beliefs

Newspaper clippings featuring a story about a German football club being banned from playing in 1934 after failing to give the Nazi salute are genuine.

The German team was not protesting the Nazi regime; the incident happened in France; the team was only banned from playing games outside of Germany.

[…]

Although the Arabian Peninsula is affected by a tropical cyclone every one to two years, a tropical cyclone landfall at the equivalent strength of a hurricane is rare in western Oman or eastern Yemen.

The last tropical cyclone with a hurricane-equivalent intensity to track near southwestern Oman’s Dhofar Governorate was in May 1959, according to NOAA’s historical database; there is no record of a landfall stronger than Category 1 in this part of Oman in NOAA’s database.

According to a 2006 paper published by the Royal Meteorological Society, the 1959 cyclone collapsed buildings and lifted roofs off other buildings. The main road from Salalah to the nearby port of Raysut was “swept away by a raging torrent (of flood water) from the mountains.”

What’s even more rare is a Category 3 landfall.

Again from NOAA’s historical database, the only other Category 3 landfalls of record anywhere in Oman happened this century in northern Oman (Phet in 2010 and Gonu in 2007). Both were also late May landfalls.

And now the Tangsnorter continues his assault on Civil Servants by stripping away their rights.

The Tangerine Tyrant won’t rest until all of the Civl Service is replaced with people who will gladly wear the MAGA cap and kiss his ass.

President Trump issued three executive orders Friday aimed at overhauling the federal bureaucracy by making it easier to fire poor performers, sharply curtailing the amount of time federal employees can be paid for union work and directing agencies to negotiate tougher union contracts.

The orders could result in the biggest changes in a generation to civil service protections long enjoyed by federal workers.

White House officials said the goal of the executive orders is to make the workforce of two million federal employees more efficient and responsive to the public and to improve morale.

In a briefing with reporters, Andrew Bremberg, the White House’s director of the domestic policy, said that a survey of federal employees has found that many do not believe their agencies adequately address poor performers.

“These executive orders make it easier for agencies to remove poor performing employees and ensure that taxpayer dollars are more efficiently used,” he said.

And we know that the Marmalade Shitcannon defines “poor performers” as those who will not bow down and kiss his ass

I suspect someone in the military would not have actually killed the young women.

The ICE agent who shot her is just another in a long run of gun-happy agents at the border. Not all of them are. Yet under Trump there is now an atmosphere that is very troubling, where Trump is encouraging his supporters and other Americans to think about “others” as less than human.

I’ve been on this site long enough that other old timers know that I used to be very “pro-life” (anti-abortion). Even then I always thought there should be exceptions for rape/incest and “the life of the mother.”

However the death of Savita Haluppanavar made me realize that these “exceptions” don’t work when the life of the mother is actually at stake. In cases of preeclampsia and other life-threatening conditions, time is of the essence and there is no time for doctors to apply for an exception, which can take weeks to obtain, when the mother’s life can end in hours.

It also made me realize that those who call themselves “pro life” don’t really give a flying fuck about “the life of the mother” or even “the life of the fetus” but it’s just a means of controlling women’s sexual activity, particularly now that they have shown they are opposed to all forms of birth control as well as abortion.

It should be noted that as Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Putnam once removed failed Publix health inspections from the public website, and then changed the labeling from a failing grade to “re-inspection required,” reports the Times.

Remember how Karl Rove was supposed to be a genius for turning opponents’ strengths against them? Probably the most famous was when he turned John Kerry’s service in Vietnam into a negative with the Swiftboating shit.

Trump’s approach is different. He attacks his opponent on his own weaknesses, generally making it up from whole cloth. Then, when it comes out that Trump actually did what he baselessly accused Clinton of, and did it WAY WORSE even than he accused her of, it blunts the attack, because people who aren’t paying attention just see tit-for-tat attacks.

Trump’s gotten through life by dragging everyone - friends, allies, enemies, even neutral referees - down to his level. He was the perfect guy to grab the mantle of the GOP after 40 years of similar tactics.

Can I add that many fundamentalists and other churches need an enemy to preach against and to make those that follow their dictates feel better than those that are evil.

It used to be demon alcohol. It used to be infidelity. It now is homosexuality and abortion that is their targeted enemy.

It is not about abortion at all in some cases. It is all about feeling righteous.

Before there was Savita Halappanavar, there was Sheila Hodgers. This woman was literally tortured to death in an Irish hospital in 1983. Hodgers had been diagnosed with cancer and had then become pregnant:

Since the anti-cancer drugs she was taking could harm the foetus, she was stopped from taking them. Hodgers began experiencing severe back pains and could hardly stand. Her husband urged the hospital to induce her pregnancy or perform a Caesarian section but they refused as it would damage the foetus. They also refused painkillers. The hospital had to abide by an alleged “Bishop’s Contract”, a code of ethics drawn up with the Catholic Church. During her time at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Hodgers was attended to by at least seven doctors. Her husband said the only doctor there he trusted was Michael Neary.

According to Brendan Hodgers: “I went to see Sheila one night and she was in absolute agony. She was literally screaming at this stage. I could hear her from the front door of the hospital and she was in a ward on the fourth floor. I saw the sister and she produced a doctor who said nothing that made any sense.

On 17 March 1983, Hodgers gave premature birth in extreme agony to a baby girl, Gemma, who immediately died. Hodgers died two days later from cancer in her neck, spine, legs, liver and ribs.

Before there was Savita Halappanavar, there was Sheila Hodgers. This woman was literally tortured to death in an Irish hospital in 1983. Hodgers had been diagnosed with cancer and had then become pregnant:

And the girl known only as X in the case Attorney General v. X:

The case involved a fourteen-year-old girl (named only as “X” in the courts and the media to protect her identity) who was a ward of the state and who had been the victim of a statutory rape by a neighbour in December 1991 and became pregnant. X told her mother of suicidal thoughts because of the unwanted pregnancy, and as abortion was illegal in both Ireland and Northern Ireland, the family planned to travel to the United Kingdom for an abortion. Before the planned abortion was carried out, the family asked the Irish police force, the Garda Síochána, if DNA from the aborted foetus would be admissible as evidence in the courts, as the neighbour was denying responsibility.

Hearing that X planned to have an abortion, the Attorney General, Harry Whelehan, sought an injunction under Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution of Ireland (which outlaws abortion) preventing her from having the procedure carried out. The injunction was granted by Mr Justice Declan Costello in the High Court in February 1992.

The High Court injunction was appealed to the Supreme Court, which overturned it by a majority of four to one (Hederman J. dissenting) in March 1992. The majority opinion (Finlay C.J., McCarthy, Egan and O’Flaherty J.J.) held that a woman had a right to an abortion under Article 40.3.3 if there was “a real and substantial risk” to her life. This right did not exist if there was a risk to her health but not her life; however it did exist if the risk was the possibility of suicide.

X miscarried shortly after the judgement. Supreme Court Justice Hugh O’Flaherty, now retired, said in an interview with The Irish Times that the X Case was “peculiar to its own particular facts”, since X miscarried and did not have an abortion, and this renders the case moot in Irish law. According to Justice O’Flaherty, his reasoning for agreeing to uphold X’s right to travel to the United Kingdom for an abortion because of suicidal ideation, “The stark situation is, if someone who is pregnant commits suicide, you lose the mother and the child.”

First it was same-sex marriage, now it’s abortion. Ireland seems to be heading towards secularism at a breakneck pace. The Catholic leadership have only themselves to thank for this, IMHO.

Only one of whom could provide verifiable evidence that she had in any way been harassed. And who accepted his apology and considered the matter closed. Every other accuser faced virtually no scrutiny, with at least half not even being named.

While I’m a supporter of the #MeToo movement, I cannot help but feel that it has become a weapon as much as a movement, used in the case of the former Senator by his female colleague against a man she saw as a major political adversary.

I don’t know about ‘as much’ of a weapon. I think it was clearly used as a weapon in this case, with Roger Stone’s fingerprints all over it. Other than that though, I can’t think of another high-profile case of false or trivial accusations being used as a weapon since this movement began. George Takei’s accuser seems to have been an isolated event with no significant ramifications, and does not appear to be a coordinated attack.

They probably got it mailed in! I read an article today about how there aren’t enough officers to man the ports of entry. These aren’t just border crossings, btw. They include shipments of all sorts from out of the country. Fentanyl suppliers in China have no problem selling the stuff to Americans, packaging it up and shipping it.

Fentanyl also comes through the U.S. mail with 350 smaller packages of the drug seized at international mail facilities in 2016-2017. CBP says in response they have increased staffing at international mail facilities by 20 percent in the last six months.

True this (at least AFAICT) - I can’t claim much substantive knowledge of what it’s like living in Ireland these days: but ISTM that their joining the EU, and the Eurozone has not only provided them (despite their economic problems) with the first chance of decent prosperity - i.e. something other than endemic paupery - in forever. And also, it seems like said opening-up has led a lot of Irish to think that being the most priest-ridden country in Europe may not be the best model for the future. There is that. If you put up a constitutional amendment however, start counting states that reject it and when you get to thirteen, your amendment is done.

Doing it with legislation or a referendum can get it overturned with future legislation or a competing referendum.

Conservatives nor evangelicals give a crap about abortion. The point of pushing the issue is to gain and maintain power. That’s it. It drives voters to the polls out of fear.

On the Irish vote… Old people fucking up the world everywhere (trump, Brexit, Ireland):

The exit poll showed 69% of men voting and 72.1% of women voting supporting repeal.

Support appeared to decrease with age. The exit poll said repeal was supported by 87.6% of voters 18-24 years old; 84.6% of voters 25-34 years old; 72.8% of voters 35-49 years old; and 63.7% of voters 50-64 years old.

Voters over 65 were the only age group overall not supporting the amendment, with 58.7% voting no, the poll said

This comes days after Parkland student David Hogg called for a “die-in” to protest Publix’s support for an NRA-backed gubernatorial candidate.

I live where we have referenda, and believe me, not having national referenda is the polar opposite of a problem.

We might worry about ‘dudes in robes’, but generally the Supreme Court has been ahead of the curve of public opinion. For example, at the time the SCOTUS overturned anti-miscegenation laws, an overwhelming majority of Americans opposed interracial marriage. Now that’s flipped completely.

Making rights subject to majority rule makes them more vulnerable, not less.

My wife put up a line on top of each of her Websites’ landing pages saying the sites comply with the new EU privacy law. (Her sites are all static Websites and collect no data nor use any analytical tools.)

The only one of hers that did not comply was the village library catalogue, which she suspended. (The state some months ago pulled the private database she created into the state catalogue, and she’d warned the village she would eventually end support for the library database, which we were paying for. The EU law was as good an excuse as any to end that Website.)

My thinking is similar to yours on this particular matter: “The Catholic leadership have only themselves to thank for this.” The leaders decided to cover up thousands of cases of sexual abuse while portraying the Church as the ultimate authority on moral behavior. I’ve never thought a group of religious persons, comprised primarily of males, should have the right to tell women what they can and cannot do with their bodies and tell them to remain in abusive relationships.

Unfortunately here abortion rights somehow got tied to the right of privacy, which is not even enumerated. IMO, the 13th Amendment should cover it. If you tell a women that she can’t have an abortion (or for that matter, that she must have one), what you’re saying is that her body doesn’t belong to her. In English, we have a word for a person whose body does not belong to them—that person is a slave. In this case, a slave of the State.

Edited: Freakin’ pronouns!

It got tied to privacy because a long haul of cases which kept getting thrown out of the courts due to lack-of-standing (by the time the case reached a trial, the pregnancy was already completed, and thus the case was moot).

The court ruled privacy rights under the XIV Amendment were covered by due process.

States argued a state interest in shutting down abortion providers, but the courts noted that their common-law arguments for that were not based in common law and the laws they enacted were only a recent innovation.

After Roe, Evangelicals mostly considered abortion a “Catholic problem,” until Paul Weyrich wedded Evangelicals to the anti-abortion movement to get Ronald Reagan elected over Jimmy Carter.

Dems only +4% on the generic ballot — we’re 4% away from catastrophe unless more voters wise the hell up.

I know we always say a lot of people who don’t usually vote are going to do it for sure this time, and we’ve always been disappointed, but this time it may be true. People who don’t usually vote but will this time aren’t necessarily going to start answering polls, though.

Besides, I’m off polls since 11/8/16.

Trump nominates anti-immigration activist to head agency for immigrants and refugees

President Trump has nominated a staunch anti-immigration activist to head the State Department agency that oversees refugee and immigration issues.

Ronald W. Mortensen, a former foreign service officer and longtime fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates against legal and illegal immigration, is Trump’s choice to be assistant secretary of State for the bureau of population, refugees and migration. The White House announced the nomination late Thursday.

As word spread on Friday, Democrats and immigration advocates quickly objected. But Mortensen, who must be confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate, could face trouble among Republicans as well: His long trail of controversial writings and statements includes attacks not only against immigrants but against some Republican senators, including Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and John McCain of Arizona.

The possible penalties the EU can impose for violating this incredibly complex law are huge. Nobody wants to get hit with a fine for several million euros, even if it comes from a country where they don’t really do business.

Maybe there’s a good reason for the GDPR, but after researching it in depth my considered opinion is that it’s a fuckin’ mess and a bad idea. And it won’t do a damned thing to stop spammers and criminals. It just penalizes everyone else.

The town is small enough that I don’t mind people calling me up at home and telling me what they think or asking my opinion on something or other (or just telling me what’s going on, like the telephone company today or asking me to decorate graves tomorrow).

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to put an E-mail address or telephone number in a user profile, in case that comes up?

One thing the EU has done which is not necessarily a bad thing: Through this law they’ve raised awareness in the USA about what sorts of private data is being collected.

The same argument was made when the EU passed its “right to be forgotten” law over Google and other search engines. All sorts of people and companies complained how it would be difficult or impossible to implement, it would cut into profit, &c ad nauseum.

The EU told them “tough, do it anyway.” A market of 450,000,000 people is a powerful motivator to a corporation.

Memorial Day weekend gas prices highest in four years (Goes to UPI)

May 25 (UPI) — Consumer gas prices for the holiday weekend will be the highest they’ve been in four years and will likely stay that way through the summer, the U.S. government said.

The three-day Memorial Day weekend in the United States marks the de facto start of the summer holiday season. With crude oil prices flirting with multi-year highs, retail gasoline prices have moved toward a national average of $3 per gallon, a psychological threshold indicative of changing consumer behaviors.

Motor club AAA reports a national average retail price of $2.97 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline for Friday. That marks the highest point since Memorial Day weekend 2014, when gas prices were $3.67 per gallon.

EIA said it expects the summer driving season, which lasts through September, will see an average price of $2.90 per gallon, 49 cents higher than summer 2017.

Hmm. A freedom of information act request uncovers dozens of complaints against CBP over a period of five years.

These fall into the same sort of pattern of police brutality accused of other police departments.

They are horrible crimes if true and should be investigated. The Vice article does not say whether they were investigated or no.

The government’s case against “violent leftist agitators” from Inauguration Day is falling apart. It seems that James O’Keefe’s “sting videos” don’t really qualify as evidence.

wonkette.com

The whole thing lays out what happened, but this stands out:

Ah, but there was an ace in the hole for the cases against the dozens of protesters still facing charges. The prosecutors had one of James O’Keefe’s crappy undercover “sting” videos from “Project Veritas” (Latin for “Truly Not Harvard”), which showed PROOF of some leftist protest leaders conspiring to do mayhem, like putting stinky barf-smelly butyric acid into the ventilation system of the “DeploraBall” gathering for far-right Trump supporters, or maybe even throwing the stuff on attendees themselves. So obviously, anyone who marched with that group, which called itself “J20,” had to be part of the conspiracy.

Bit of a problem there: During the discovery phase of the case, the prosecutors were supposed to share all their evidence to the defense attorneys, and under what’s known as the Brady rule had to let the defense know of any exculpatory evidence. With the Project Verdigris videos, the prosecution claimed, wrongly, that the only edits to the videos were to remove the faces of the O’Keefe “reporter” and of an undercover cop who was also at the meeting. Not quite!

At least one potentially exculpatory section had been completely edited from the video. In the removed clip, a Project Veritas agent undercut part of the prosecution’s argument.

“I was talking with one of the organizers from the IWW [Industrial Workers of the World] and I don’t think they know anything about any of the upper echelon stuff,” the Project Veritas employee said in the removed clip.

The line is critical because prosecutors have eyed the IWW, a leftist union, as an instigator for the protest, Shadowproof previously reported. A number of the remaining defendants are IWW members, and IWW records were seized from defendants’ cell phones and entered as evidence in the case.

I watched The Newshour this afternoon. Judy Woodruff interviewed Marc Short (White House Legislative Advisor, or something to that effect.) It was sort of odd. 90% of the time he was answering questions he was making puppy eyes at her, (with a slight smile.) “Why are you separating immigrant mothers and children?” “Unfortunately the law is such that blah, blah… [veering off into nonresponsive bullshit.”]
Patronizing? You bet.

Now, a lot of men use a different tone of voice when speaking to women, and it isn’t always a bad thing, but in a professional situation. Um. No.

“The campaign of the president of the United States, including some of its most senior members was staffed with criminals, that is a fact.”

Bob Cesca

Absolutely true. The only problem: Trump and the Red Hats are winning with propaganda and outright lies. Millions of American —suckers all— are buying Biff’s horseshit. Dems only +4% on the generic ballot — we’re 4% away from catastrophe unless more voters wise the hell up.

The only reason Trump isn’t polling at 20% is due directly to Fox News, talk radio and Russian deza/trolls fire-hosing the propaganda like a perpetual geyser of insanity.

I can think of another reason. My Democratic congressman sent out an email pushing the latest slogan “A Better Deal to Protect Our Democracy”. Sounds good, so I followed the link. First of all, the “Protect Our Democracy” part wasn’t there. And what about the whole “Trump campaign was staffed with criminals” thing — nothing. And this is the party that was the direct victim of the crime.

Meanwhile, Trump is going on about the FBI spying on his campaign. But the party that was actually spied on by a hostile foreign goverment insists on following the losing strategy of keeping quiet about it.

Maddening, isn’t it? It’s one of the many reasons my BoB friend ended up feeling as she did - there was no way the Dems could be that incompetent at messaging, ergo, they were deliberately being weak in order to indirectly empower the GOPers.

I won’t lie; there have been times where I couldn’t help but wonder if that was in fact true of at least some of them.

Thankfully, there are others (by fantastic coincidence, the ones with the most grassroots popularity) who are having none of that:

Ted Lieu is also a great example of how to play offense.

Here’s an interview with the guy who got hit by a lava bomb in Hawaii. The whole Big Island Video News YouTube channel is great for keeping up with what’s happening. It becomes apparent pretty quickly that the residents of the island just think of the volcano as a part of daily life, and the volcano goddess Pele owns the island. It’s been fascinating to check in to that channel.

Here, my state party is running against the GOP’s legislative positions and building back the state’s long-neglected grass roots organisation. (Jane Kleeb is using her skill when she was in charge of Bold Nebraska opposing the Keystone XL Pipeline here.)

The NDP notes that over the last election there was a 70% increase in primary voters: Not bad for a midterm election.

As for the national Democrats, they are suing the Trump Campaign, Russia, and Wikileaks over interference. FOX of course won’t report on that. I don’t know about the other television networks since I don’t have television service here.
