Gah. Got dead-threaded so I’m reposting this here:

Here’s an interview with the guy who got hit by a lava bomb in Hawaii. The whole Big Island Video News YouTube channel is great for keeping up with what’s happening. It becomes apparent pretty quickly that the residents of the island just think of volcanic eruptions as a part of daily life, and the volcano goddess Pele owns the island. They’re almost casual about it. It’s been fascinating to check in to that channel.

As an example, this is one of the Nebraska Democratic Party’s projects:

The Republican Party shut down the government because they could not come to the table to find a permanent solution for Dreamers and kids who rely on CHIP for health insurance. The Republican Party also gave the biggest government handout in decades to millionaires and billionaires while pretending they are giving tax cuts to our families. The threats to the environment, workplace protections, and Obamacare occur on a daily basis.

We are angry and ready to take Congress back for the people. The best way to elect Democrats is on a personal level at the doors-conversations about how to vote and the issues we care about. We must communicate our values. We know the current one-party rule at the national and state level is bad for democracy.

The Nebraska Democratic Party is launching a new Block Captain program where you are responsible for connecting with voters in your community to elect Democrats up and down the ballot.

I am always interested in the different musical acts you introduce here at your Home for the Sane. You introduce me to a whole lot of groups I would never hear of around here (as they are neither Country nor Western).

Too early for this shit. Although we’ve had mild weather on the west coast. It seems every time we get an 80F day the wind comes up and we get another week of temps in the low 60s. I’m sure we are drying out, just a little slower than most years. July will still be red flag season.

Sub-tropical storm Alberto is now moving east, away from the Mexican coastline at Yucatan. It is expected to turn north tonight and intensify into a tropical storm. The current graphic from the National Hurricane Center places the centre of the path now crossing the Alabama/Florida border. (I hope Stonekettle is battening down the hatches.)

The prairie fires we had here a couple years ago are the same. They move awfully fast when the wind is blowing. Up in Chadron fires almost took out Chadron State College. They got into the rugged areas of the Sandhills and were difficult for firefighters to even approach.

Here fires came within a few miles of town … the village fire brigade had just purchased specialised equipment to crawl around ravines and sand hills, which turned out to be vital in preventing our town or surrounding ranches and farms from being threatened.

As much rain as we’ve had recently, fire danger is pretty low here now.

First day of the new EU privacy law, and Google and Facebook already have complaints lodged against them for violating the law.

bbc.com

Flouting the law in the EU didn’t work out so well for Microsoft. I imagine it wont for Facebook and Google either. It’s not like they don’t employ thousands of IT people to bring their companies into compliance… .

If the complaints are valid, the companies are trying to force people to give up their rights under the new law.

Complaints have been filed against Facebook, Google, Instagram and WhatsApp within hours of the new GDPR data protection law taking effect.

The companies are accused of forcing users to consent to targeted advertising to use the services.

Privacy group noyb.eu led by activist Max Schrems said people were not being given a “free choice”.

If the complaints are upheld, the websites may be forced to change how they operate, and they could be fined.

Me too. it’s just a travesty, and the US Gov’t is just implicit as hell.

You know, back in the day before we outsourced almost everything to privatize the profit and socialize the cost, we had a pretty functional Civil Service. Those days are long gone.

When I was in the Air Force, sitting nuclear alert, all of of our support staff were AF employees. They cooked our food, they cleaned our toilets and showers, and we all got along just great, Now it’s all outsourced, and it seems there is no connection between fighters and support staff.

Granted, the Gov’t doesn’t have to pay pensions to long time support staff, but the Corporations that supply them today pay them shit, take huge profits, and terminate them before they can get pensions.

The system is rigged, and just sucks big time.

Since it’s Memorial Day weekend, lots of people are leaving Phoenix for the high country. Driving to work the past couple of days, the notification signs on the freeway have had signs saying “NO FIRES CLSD FOREST AREAS KNOW BEFORE YOU GO”.

I hope we make it out of this weekend without a bad fire. The north central part of the state has a fire warning and northeastern Arizona has a high wind warning.

I’ve seen Slayer five times. I saw Slayer at Red Rocks in 1999. That shit was surreal, and at times dangerous. I call it a human avalanche. A handful of chaps had to be hauled away in ambulance that night. They had probably a hundred bouncers standing at the stage, shoulder to shoulder. That shit was wild. After Slayer was done, Slipknot took the stage, and this was when they emerged with their very good loud fuckshit of a first heavy metal album. That was a fun night.

They were obvious targets because it was obvious they were going to try to circumvent the law, as alleged by the four nations in question.

The law is specific in saying that you must opt-in for advertising to use the service is illegal. The law has been in place for two years.

Reason is arguing that the law will shut down tiny Web companies and hurt free markets. (They care about money not privacy) as well as small not-for-business Websites.

My wife’s one line on her Websites notes that her sites comply with their laws. Strictly she didn’t have to put that up, since she never collected any sort of data. (The biggest amount of traffic through her sites is my E-mail going in and out.)

There has been a massive increase in the sale of carrots in the United Kingdom. Carrots didn’t suddenly get more popular; they are being used to steal more valuable items.

You get two items: Inexpensive carrots and something far more expensive like avocados. You scan the carrots twice, then put each in the bag. The scale can’t tell the difference between a pound of carrots and a pound of avocados.

A Warren, Ohio, father wanted to keep his revolver out of his kids’ hands when they visited his home Sunday, so he hid the weapon in the broiler of his Maytag oven, according to police. But Robin Garlock, 44, didn’t tell his girlfriend about the hiding spot before she started heating the oven to do some baking later that night, the Youngstown Vindicator reports.

She found out about the gun with a “bang,” police said — though at first she assumed the gunfire she heard had come from outside the house, the newspaper reports. The girlfriend yelled for Garlock, who told her to run for cover, according to police. Garlock then headed for the broiler himself, where he was burned as he tried to secure the weapon.

“It’s too hot,” Warren Police Detective Wayne Mackey told the Vindicator. “The gun literally spun around because it’s going off.”

Garlock was seriously injured in the incident, Mackey told Raw Story, but Garlock is now doing better. In addition to the burns Garlock suffered, two bullets or bullet fragments struck him. (more)

Well, Mythbusters covered bullets in the oven, and the guy supposedly using one to replace a fuse in his car and getting shot in the leg. They discovered the previously unsuspected [sarc] fact of conservation of momentum—the bullet more or less stays put while the much lighter cartridge case takes off flying. They should have tried putting the whole gun in the oven….

Here in Europe, this is notable news:

Ireland has voted by a landslide margin to change the constitution so that abortion can be legalised, according to an exit poll conducted for The Irish Times by Ipsos/MRBI.

The poll suggests that the margin of victory for the Yes side in the referendum will be 68 per cent to 32 per cent - a stunning victory for the Yes side after a long and often divisive campaign.

Counting of votes begins on Saturday morning at 9am with an official result expected to be declared in the afternoon.

However, the size of the victory predicted by the exit poll leaves little doubt that, whatever the final count figures, the constitutional ban on abortion, inserted in a referendum in 1983, is set to be repealed. An exit poll published later on Friday night by RTÉ during the Late Late Show mirrored the projection seen in The Irish Times exit poll. The RTÉ poll showed 69.4 have voted for Yes, while 30.6 per cent have voted for No.

As a reminder of “don’t sell to Teh Geyhs” Rep. Dana Rohrabacher and what he did to a rental home… .

la.curbed.com

The congressman sued the landlord for $20,000 for failure to return his security deposit.

(With photographs of the home, more at the link):

In April 2010, long-time US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher and his family moved into an “immaculate” million-dollar rental house in Costa Mesa; in August 2012, he moved out of what had become “a shockingly horrific pigsty, a dump worse than a college fraternity house of unhygienic slobs unfamiliar with the most basic tools of cleaning,” as the OC Weekly describes it. The details are truly disgusting. Brace. Rohrabacher—who reps parts of coastal LA and OC Counties—is now embroiled in a huge amount of legal nonsense with his landlord Robert Polyniak, who says his tenants changed the locks shortly after they moved in and refused to let him in for inspections. Polyniak’s girlfriend says “When Rohrabacher moved in, we thought, ‘Wow, a congressman. This is great. What could go wrong?’” Well, just a taste (ew):

— “Massive black stains and muck covered the carpet throughout the home. Sticky grime encased damaged, rusted appliances … Blinds were cracked. Black dirt ruined the appearance of once-sparkling tile floors.”
— “Denied water, once-thriving outside plants and grass dried up and died.”
— “Walls inexplicably contained odd holes, nail polish, wax and some smelly substance that may have been feces.”
— “Every toilet seat in the house was broken … An overflowing tub cracked a ceiling with water damage.”
— “The ceilings showed smoke damage.”
— “Clumps of hair and remnants of what may have been balloons or some other rubbery material clogged sinks.”
— “Thick, solidified grease rendered the air-suction vent above the kitchen stove useless … white maggots squirmed underneath a kitchen stove that may not have ever been cleaned.”
— “phone lines were strangely severed”
— “A second-floor suite used by Dana’s wife, Rhonda, as her bedroom contained a huge, mysterious, lubricant-like stain—something you might expect on the floor of a Hollywood sex club—that had seeped through thick carpet and padding to tarnish a hardwood floor.”

More boring tornado damage in town behind the hide bar and the lack of interest from folks outside of town getting us back in shape:

Got an E-mail tonight explaining why one of our town well pumps is out of commission.

Last week I tried to draw a water sample for the state and could not turn it on. The electric company finally got around to checking it out today; the wiring was pulled out of the maintenance shop where the water pump control panel is located.

Then they left. Thanks guys. They’ll be around (sometime) to reconnect our water pump.

Trump’s ban on global abortion funding has led to more abortions (but not safe ones, DIY ones. Goes to CNN, more at the link):

Health worker Elizabeth Wanjiru was walking through the narrow streets of Kenya’s largest slum earlier this year when she came across two schoolboys pointing at something in a muddy ditch. As she drew closer she saw it was the remains of an aborted fetus.

Dumped elsewhere in Kibera, the fetus had washed up in a narrow alleyway after a night of rainfall. It’s something Wanjiru hasn’t seen for years.

His policy is much harsher than when GW Bush implemented the Reagan Era “Mexico City Protocol.” It cuts off funding to any clinic which mentions abortion, meaning contraception is cut, as well as treatment for tuberculosis, malaria, &c.

Texas hunters who accidentally shot each other blamed undocumented immigrants, police reveal

It gets worse:

After the alleged attack, a family friend setup a GoFundMe page stating that Mr Daughtery and his group were involved in a shoot-out with some illegal immigrants that were trying to steal his RV with his clients still inside it.

The appeal, to help pay for Mr Daughtery’s medical bills as he is uninsured, raised over $26,000 (more than £20,000) before it was shut down.

Looking at the twitter thread in #82, Satanic Ritual Abuse is mentioned, and the delusions do not have to be have been brought about by childhood or early adolescence sexual trauma or abuse, it may simply be False Memory Syndrome.

As far as I can tell, the SRA and later RA craze is basically an unholy combination of paranoid evangelicals and unethical psychiatric/psychological professionals out to make a buck by inventing traumas that never happened (a common story is institutions simply dropping patients when their insurance ran out). It basically works by making patients, often children and adolescents, believe things which never happened by coaching and coercing them. The methodology they use is basically asking for false memories of abuse to occur.

There are a number of miscarriages of justice in the wake of those theories, where people were convicted of crimes which were never committed in any shape or form. Some got justice on appeal, while others have died in prison. And not only in the United States, but world-wide. Sweden had the infamous “Elvira” case, where a step-father died in prison for crimes he did not commit.

And the damage these eejits do doesn’t stop there, because the false memories implanted are harmful to the “victims” themselves, as they will have mental problems of varying degrees which will not go away until (s)he faces the reality of the false memory. Not to mention the damage it does to their children due to myths about sexual abuse perpetuated by this insane crowd.

Not to mention that organizations involved in the fight against Child Sexual Abuse too often tend to deal with the issue of SRA and RA by not dealing with it, either ignoring it ever happened, or holding onto those specific belief systems. There are still “research” reports cited by genuine Child Sexual Abuse activists and researchers that were made by the SRA/RA crowd, and which is still a major drag on the field because of the pseudoscience they represent.

America, 2018, specifically Arizona:

In Arizona, teaching creationism is supported by 4 of 5 Republicans who want to oversee education

At a forum for Republican candidates for school superintendent last November, four of the five candidates - including Douglas - supported teaching creationism in Arizona schools.

[…]

Frank Riggs: “Absolutely. No question about it.”

Diane Douglas: “Should the theory of intelligent design be taught along with the theory of evolution? Absolutely, and then our children, to be critical thinkers, have to follow the trails where they take them. As a matter of fact I had a discussion with my staff, because we’re currently working on science standards to make sure this issue was addressed in the standards we’re working on.”

Bob Branch: “I already put out there that I teach for Liberty University (a Christian school). I also teach for Grand Canyon University (a Christian school), so how do you think I feel about this question? The reality is I wholly believe it. […]

Jonathan Gelbart: “I don’t think it’s a good idea to have government bureaucrats teaching religious ideas in our public schools. [… the lone reasonable Republican]

Tracy Livingston: “We used to be able to say ‘Merry Christmas.’ We used to be able to say ‘God bless you’ with no fear. I will tell you, should we teach intelligent design? Yes, definitely. There are teachers that do it. […]

I was looking at the website of a candidate in Iowa, who was running for a state board… and no mention of his party to be found.

So I had to dig - turns out he’s a Republican. But he won’t admit it on his site.

I suspect he’s part of a contingent who’s hoping to avoid the coming blowback in November, as several Republicans in swing states must be.

This goes to the heart of the problem with what Trump has turned the GOP into, and which Trump also desires to turn the entire nation into: those who don’t disagree will be too afraid to state so, and just hide whatever disagreements and associations they have.

This is the spreading of fear.

Missed the news of this bit of attempted-fuckery by the Trump administration a couple of weeks ago… probably because the scandalous nature of Trump steals the headlines everyday:

OPM Retirement Cut Legislative Proposal Draws Bipartisan Opposition

[…]
Late last week, Pon proposed legislation for a number of retirement cuts, all of which had previously been included in both of President Trump’s annual budget proposals. The suggested legislation would: eliminate Federal Employees Retirement System supplements for employees who retire before age 62; increase employee contributions to FERS by 1 percentage point per year until they reach an overall contribution level of 7.25 percent, matching the government’s share; change the basis of defined benefit annuity payments from an employee’s highest three years of salary to his or her highest five years; and eliminate cost-of-living adjustments for FERS retirees—both current and future—and reduce Civil Service Retirement System COLAs by 0.5 percent.

[…]

Congress appears shy to take this on, though, probably because appearances of diddling with retirement plans is a losing issue at the polls.

But Pon is a Trump appointee, and is attempting to do his master’s bidding.

It’s gotten lost in the fog of corruption, but the Trump administration’s apathy toward foreign affairs seems to have encouraged other nations to hang Taiwan out to dry. Several have ended formal diplomatic relations with the Taiwan government.
medium.com

The countries bailing on Taiwan are all small African, Asian and Latin American nations who have economic ties to the Beijing government. Needless to say, to continue doing business with Beijing, they have to renounce Taiwan’s independence as a nation.

Meanwhile, the mainland government has aggressively been demanding businesses to stop referring to Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong as a separate countries, or they will lose their access to the mainland. All of these businesses have just rolled over and changed references to make Big China happy.

While chipping away at Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, Beijing has also been busy pressuring companies into accepting its own firm position on the island. This year, international companies from Marriott to Gap to Delta have issued public apologies for violating the “one China” policy and hurting Chinese feelings by implying in one way or another that Taiwan is a country.

In the past, the USA would have pushed back on the mainland government’s efforts to sideline Taiwan. As it is, Trump & Co. see more financial benefits from letting Beijing have its way (see also, ZTE) than to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty. If this attitude continues, Taiwan may very well be absorbed by the mainland in the not-too-distant future.

Trump has a long history of being totally dissociated from objective reality. Even his lawyers know they can’t trust him to stick to the same story for more than a few hours. Plus, he’s shown signs of mental impairment, like seeing Melania in the window when no one was there and his disjointed stream of consciousness statements. I’m not saying he is not at heart malevolent, but his mind is on its way out. The combination of rage and disconnection from reality is a scary prospect, given his position and power.

I need some new music. Anyone got a suggestion? Anything goes - my tastes run the gamut from Johnny Cash type country & bluegrass to punk to metal to progressive to classical to hip-hop.

I’d suggest, but I get the feeling that any suggestions I’d make wouldn’t qualify as ‘new.’

One project that I thought was cool - my friend Andee Blacksugar has done a full-on re-imagining of Motorhead’s ‘Overkill’ album, and he recorded and mixed the whole thing in five days!

BLACK SUGAR TRANSMISSION “Overkill” (MOTORHEAD cover)

Andee plays guitar with KMFDM and Peter Murphy. It’s my belief that he’s the best rock guitarist in New York City these days.

That tour would have been their break (they had the entire tour booked as opener), but right after their MSG show, Simon contracted bronchitis and they had to bail from the tour.

Candida Moss and Joel Baden, professors of history at various universities, bring us an update on a fragment of the Gospel of Mark allegedly from the first century. TL;DR: turns out it’s from the 2nd to 3rd century and allegedly from a known (since 1903) papyrus haul.

thedailybeast.com

The existence of this fragment was announced at a debate between Dan Wallace of Dallas Theological Seminary (evangelical) and Bart Ehrman (agnostic, UNC) in 2012. The announcement overshadowed the debate and somewhat took the air out of the room. Why, there might be some room for some of the evangelical beliefs about the Bible’s unique preservation and so on and so forth!

As the months and then years passed, the fragment didn’t make an appearance, and the rumors started flying. There was a story that the fragment may have been discovered by taking apart an Egyptian burial mask (cartonnage) in a manner inconsistent with preserving the mask, i.e., by dissolving the plaster of the mask in a sink full of water. This article from last year by Moss and Baden goes into that:

christiancentury.org

Earlier this week, an evangelical textual criticism blog announced that the fragment had surfaced as part of a volume of texts from the Oxyrhynchus Papyri series. But questions remain, because the keeper of that fragment has allegedly been shopping it around for a number of years. But he can’t do that, because the P. Oxy fragments are owned by the Egyptian Excavation Society.

evangelicaltextualcriticism.blogspot.com

Even a second or third century Mark fragment would fetch an unbelievable price were it to go up for sale, because there is only one other fragment of Mark from the same period. The Green family of Hobby Lobby fame has been stocking up its new Museum of the Bible by buying up fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls (and we are talking tiny scraps of papyrus or parchment, no bigger than a sticky note). Scholars of this sort of thing now believe that any DSS fragment that has hit the market since 2003 (which encompasses the Green buying spree) is probably a forgery. It should be noted that Paige Patterson’s Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has a couple of DSS fragments; it is believed a donor paid $500,000 for one of the fragments. (item 16 on this list: lyingpen.com)

So here were have a fragment of Mark, but there are so many questions. I have to wonder if it’s truly a part of P.Oxy, or if it’s a fragment with a dubious provenance (read: looted) or a forgery that’s being inserted into the collection. And even if it’s legitimately part of P.Oxy, why would its keeper, Dirk Obbink, allegedly be shopping it around? He doesn’t own it. But Obbink had been working with the Green family.

So many questions about an issue that really shouldn’t be one, but given the influence of the Green family, their open wallet and their willingness to buy looted tablets and likely forged papyrus for their museum, the questions take on a larger significance.

Should I turn this into a Page? I find this stuff interesting and I could go into a discussion of the forged DSS fragments too.

Yes I am sick of it. My mother wears her Gold Star Family pin every day since Donald Trump started insulting Gold Star Families.

My mother’s a vet. My sister’s a vet. My step-father’s a combat vet (Vietnam). My brother-in-law’s a vet. I’m a vet. Every one of us is a liberal, and every one of us stands for the right to protest injustice and cruelty.

Moreover, compelled patriotism cannot be enforced (by the government), per a 1943 Supreme Court case that went 9-0 (during WW2) over compelling school students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. That decision was a resounding repudiation of the idea you can compel patriotic acts, when the nation was arguably in an existential war.

Trump is not now nor has he ever been pro-life. He doesn’t care — whether it’s a blastocyst or a fully-formed person. However, he will do whatever is required to keep his base happy because that is the only thing keeping him in power. He does care about power, money, and adulation. The GOP in Congress don’t demand the adulation for themselves but they do worship power and money and they intend to keep it at all costs.

Bishop Curry (who delivered the great sermon at the royal wedding) is on AM Joy. She asked him if the royal family knew what his sermon was going to be since it was so different for a royal wedding.

On June 23 he’s preaching in La Crosse WI and our parish is taking a number of us down there to hear him. I am so looking forward to it - he’s one of the best things to happen to my church since they got involved in the civil rights movement, perhaps even since Jonathan Daniels’ winess.

Ya know, few things anger me more in this world than cruelty to children. ICE are fucking goddamn monsters, as is anyone who condones, excuses, or turns a blind eye to this horrific bullshit.

Preach it. I see those little kids and know that they’re someone’s children, grandchildren, etc. All Trump and his allies see are “animals” or future criminals or moochers.

Thing is man, they don’t see undocumented immigrants as people let alone people with dignity.

These aren’t even undocumented immigrants. They’re people who presented themselves at the border station to ask for asylum, just like the international treaties we’ve signed says they’re entitled to. They haven’t broken ANY laws.

All my life conservatives have conflated “refugee” with “immigrant,” (undocumented) “illegal immigrant,” “criminal,” “terrorist,” “job-stealer,” “disease-carrier,” “moocher,” &c.

Conservatives have dehumanised every one of those groups as “not American therefore not worthy of rights” (Constitution go hang itself). The only difference today from when I first became aware of politics when I was a paper boy is they quit using the dog whistles.

I always thought the far side of the moon might be a better place to hide military assets.

That’s why we need a Space Force.

Winner’s share for the Champion’s League final? Around $130 million.

Reward for Fulham getting promoted back up to the Premier League? Around $240 million.

Check, please!

These are lyrics from a Sting song called This War. It was written some years ago in response to the Iraq war but tell me this isn’t incredibly prescient:

There’s a war on our democracy
A war on our dissent
There’s a war inside religion
And what Jesus might have meant

There’s a war on mother nature
A war upon the seas
There’s a war upon the forests
On the birds and the bees

There’s a war on education
A war on information
A war between the sexes
And every nation

A war on our compassion
A war on understanding
A war on love and life itself
It’s war that they’re demanding

Quebec is an even bigger rot on Canada than Alberta could ever dream of.

As one of LGFs resident Canadians I can vouch the relationship between Quebec and the rest of the country has been testy for decades now. Too much to get into at the moment. Maybe I’ll do a page on it sometime.

These aren’t even undocumented immigrants. They’re people who presented themselves at the border station to ask for asylum, just like the international treaties we’ve signed says they’re entitled to. They haven’t broken ANY laws.

They actually have rights

As do the children
Who is representing the children?
Who is infroming them that they have rights?

I’d be shocked if they’ve been given any legal representation.

So many of the replies indicate how we end up with ICE and 1500 missing children after having so much time to reckon with our history and do better.

Yeah, it’s a thing with me. I think it very important to tie “Republicans” into everything Trump and all the bad stuff.

And it is the damn truth.

Trump = Republicans = Trump

Remind them all the time.

68.6% in Nebraska on the same day.

Two counties flipped from Obama to Trump (the largest two, Lancaster and Douglas), one county flipped from Romney to Clinton (a very rural county with a couple small villages.)
