Donald Trump Uses Memorial Day as an Opportunity to Boast and Say How Much Fallen Soldiers Would Admire Him

Politics • Views: 42,477

It’s no longer surprising to see this kind of offensive overbearing narcissism from our so-called president, but we should never stop being appalled at his utter lack of class. Today’s example: he uses Memorial Day as yet another opportunity to brag.

And this time, the craven coward who dodged the draft in Vietnam with phony “bone spurs” dares to speak for soldiers who died so that this disgusting egomaniac could be president. Nauseating.

Do I need to point out that Memorial Day isn’t supposed to be a “happy” occasion?

UPDATE at 5/28/18 11:26:11 am by Charles Johnson

Here’s what a real president sounds like on Memorial Day.

He’s either jacking himself off or complaining that he’s not being jacked off. Jagoff in Chief.

Not surprising a wealthy man that never served, has only been served, is not serving our men and women at arms well at all. Nor serving us well.

Yeah that was even worse since Kerry did serve. I’ll always remember that one Republican woman with the Purple Heart band aids. That was disgusting. You never saw mocking of McCain’s service at the DNC. In fact, I’d say Democrats have been more respectful of McCain’s service than his fellow Republicans.

re: #627 Anymouse 🌹

And Max Cleland. His treatment at the hands of conservatives was unconscionable.

You know, it’s almost as if conservatives never cared about veterans. I can’t put my finger on why.

That’s some nice ownage. By the way Charlie, you’re still fairly a young guy, why haven’t you enlisted? You’re younger than me. Plenty of my friends have actually enlisted at our age. So it’s not too late for me and it’s definitely not to late for you. And yeah your entire job is complaining about how right wing assholes like you get treated on college campuses when they act like right wing assholes. Shut the fuck up, snowfake.

You know what the biggest issue is with the Republican party? They have no experienced elders that are capable of putting some of the newer politicians in their place and to correct them when they start saying really stupid stuff.

And since even people like Jeff “Flake” Flake are quitting and others like Graham have sold out it is only going to get worse.

They need a good lesson in humbleness and reality. They need to get stomped at the polls. Not just defeated…stomped.

Everyone…get ready to do the stomp. It won’t be long.

Did you ever happen to notice that pretty much none of the new young right wing activists have ever served? I looked up Young Kirk. His entire existence in national politics is due to him complaining about how conservatives are treated and he made up some bs about how he always wanted to go to West Point but the position went to someone less qualifeid and then when he got called out on it, he claimed it was a joke but then again this is the same genius that posted a photo of women and claimed Trump ahd the most women in his cabinet of any President and only one of the women pictured- Nikki Haley was a cabinet level officer. Charlie’s what happens when FNC needs young people to prove that their ideology isn’t just for old farts dreaming about a past that never was.

Hi there! How’s life in the fast lane?

Oh good! You didn’t get blown away by last night’s storms. Life is busy. Spent my morning disassembling the control unit for the climate control in Mrs. Fish’s daily driver. It had developed a bad solder joint on a power relay, causing the air conditioning to stop working - and considering that this week has seen record-breaking heat, it was important to finally get that fixed. This afternoon is a brief respite, then I’m tasked with cooking dinner while we go over to visit one of Mrs. Fish’s friends. Never a slow moment around here.

I hope to God that we don’t have a 9/11 tragedy in the Trump years. I mean I have a lot of problems with how the Bush administration handled that but the one thing they did do that I know the Trump administration would not to was to discourage hatred and hostility towards Muslims. Frum’s boss GWB correctly saw that not all Muslims should be blamed for 9/11.

I just came back from the village cemetery. The photo is part of it; standing in the cemetery, the number of little flags from the Civil War forward really makes you wish that more folk actually believed the Bible’s admonition against warfare. Isaiah 2:4

And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

The elders that are still around are those who’ve sold their souls for campaigns donations in the neo-Guilded Age era of American politics. The moment the gavel came down on Citizens, the looting of America began in earnest. Gone were the days where the GOP had to step carefully around campaign finance laws so as to avoid uncomfortable questions from the FEC and an ethics committee, replaced instead with a period where any young yahoo who sucks enough rich dick can pool together the resources to challenge an elder incumbent. All you need is an obscenely wealthy sugar daddy (couAdelsongh) and you can be a spoiler in a GOP primary, either winning outright or making the margins thin enough that a “moderate” is suddenly reading aloud the juicier bits of A Modest Proposal. Combine that with the tidal wave of dark money going to scare the shit out of white folks and you get a toxic stew that produces the likes of Charlie Kirk and Paul Ryan, “Young Guns” who make the pilgrimage to Vegas to kiss the ring of a guy who makes Yoda look healthy and fit.

5th Armored Division, huh?

Combat chronicle

The division landed at Utah Beach on 24 July 1944 under the command of Major General Lunsford E. Oliver, and moved into combat on 2 August, driving south through Coutances, Avranches, and Vitré, and across the Mayenne River to seize the city of Le Mans, 8 August. Turning north, the division surrounded the Germans in Normandy by advancing, through Le Mêle-sur-Sarthe liberated on 11 August, to the edge of the city of Argentan on 12 August—8 days before the Argentan-Falaise Gap was closed.

Turning Argentan over to the 90th Infantry Division, the 5th Armored advanced 80 miles to capture the Eure River Line at Dreux on 16 August. Bitter fighting was encountered in clearing the Eure-Seine corridor, the second big trap in France. The 5th passed through Paris 30 August to spearhead V Corps drive through the Compiègne Forest, across the Oise, Aisne, and Somme Rivers, and reached the Belgian border at Condé, 2 September.

The division then turned east, advancing 100 miles in 8 hours, and crossed the Meuse at Charleville-Mézières, 4 September. Racing past Sedan, it liberated Luxembourg City on the 10th and deployed along the German border. The reconnaissance squadron of the division sent a patrol across the German border on the afternoon of 11 September to be the first of the Allies to cross the enemy frontier. On 14 September, the 5th penetrated the Siegfried Line at Wallendorf, remaining until the 20th, to draw off enemy reserves from Aachen.

In October it held defensive positions in the Monschau-Hofen sector. The division entered the Hurtgen Forest area in late November and pushed the enemy back to the banks of the Roer River in very heavy fighting. On 22 December it was withdrawn to Verviers and placed in 12th Army Group reserve.

Crossing the Roer on 25 February 1945 the 5th spearheaded the XIII Corps drive to the Rhine, crossing the Rhine at Wesel, 30 March. The Division reached the banks of the Elbe at Tangermunde, 12 April—45 miles from Berlin. On 16 April, the 5th moved to Klotze to wipe out the Von Clausewitz Panzer Division and again drove to the Elbe, this time in the vicinity of Dannenberg. The division mopped up in the Ninth Army sector until VE-day.

The larger point here is one that I made in a comment, and that I think may help buck up spirits around here: this is how the system functions when it is challenged.

The Sovereign Citizen nutjobs are basically Trump writ small. They deny any authority over them, and seek to denigrate, deny and degrade law enforcement and the legal system because they are delusional, toxic narcissists.

It took years, but in the end, those who thumbed their nose at the American system of Equal Justice Under The Law, found out that yes, actually, it DOES apply to them too.

These claims caused tremendous controversy during the election, particularly because most of the organization’s members had not been in a place to assess Kerry, while most of the Vietnam veterans who had served with him supported Kerry’s version of events.

The whole thing was an Astroturf campaign to smear a combat veteran (because that’s what conservatives do):

SBVT characterized itself as a non-partisan group both in the legal sense and in spirit, yet several prominent individuals who assisted SBVT also have had close ties to the Republican Party. According to information released by the IRS on February 22, 2005, more than half of the group’s reported contributions came from just three sources, all prominent Texas Republican donors: Houston builder Bob J. Perry, a longtime supporter of George W. Bush, donated $4.45 million, Harold Simmons’ Contrans donated $3 million, and T. Boone Pickens, Jr. donated $2 million. Other major contributors included Bush fundraiser Carl Lindner ($300,000), Robert Lindner ($260,000), GOP contributor Aubrey McClendon ($250,000), George Matthews Jr. ($250,000), and Crow Holdings ($100,000).

Howard County officials are searching for a man reported missing from Sunday’s devastating floods in historic Ellicott City.

Eddison Hermond, 39, of Severn was last seen at 5:20 p.m. Sunday near La Palapa restaurant on Main Street, according to Howard County police.

Hermond and others were holding a door at the restaurant to keep water out, Howard County police Chief Gary Gardner said. A woman approached seeking help with finding a missing cat, and Hermond and others went to a nearby parking lot to look.

“They saw him go under the water and not surface,” Gardner said.

The others made it back safely.

Well, IIRC, Kerry and the Democrats DID respond, and the national media pretty much tossed everything back on the MBF, and what-if’ed and whattabout’ed and gave the Swift Boat liars the benefit of the doubt on virtually everything (I recall some big hoo-ha about “Kerry’s hat” somehow “proving” that everything he said about his service in Vietnam was a lie: the most fearful bullshit, to be sure, but the SBVT were taken near-absolutely seriously, Kerry’s denial were lucky to get a mention).

I’ve always thought the Swiftboating of John Kerry was the last gasp of Vietnam-War politics: that Kerry became a prominent anti-war activist after his service (and specifically as a leader of anti-war veterans) was, I think, the main thing that sparked the big smear campaign against him: if he had been a pro-war cheerleader after Vietnam, he still might have gotten ratfucked by the GOP in ‘04, but I don’t think the charges would have had the same “righteous” outrage….

Asserting you must prove something is untrue rather than something is true (a standard tactic of religious apologetics).

The Swift Boat challenge from Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens was his reported offer of $1 million to anyone who can disprove even a single charge made by the Swift Vets and POWs for Truth, formerly the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, during the Presidential election campaign.[1]

Pickens, who had given the group $3 million in funding during the campaign, issued the challenge on November 6, 2007 in Washington, D.C, while serving as chairman of a 40th anniversary gala for The American Spectator magazine.[1][2]
Wikisource has original text related to this article:
Senator John Kerry’s letter to T. Boone Pickens in acceptance of the Swift Boat challenge

On November 16, 2007 U.S. Senator John Kerry, whose military service was a target of the groups’s televised ads, book, and media releases and appearances, wrote a letter to Pickens accepting Pickens’ offer as reported. Kerry asked Mr. Pickens to donate the $1 million to the Paralyzed Veterans of America should he succeed in proving any of the charges untrue.

That same day, Pickens issued a response, saying he was “open” to Kerry’s suggestion but stated that the offer applied only to the group’s television ads. He additionally required Kerry to provide his Vietnam journal, his military records, specifically those for the years 1971-1978, and copies of all movies and tapes made during his service. Pickens’ letter also challenged Kerry to agree to donate $1 million to the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, if Kerry “cannot prove anything in the Swift Boat ads to be untrue.”

The idea of Barack Obama releasing his college transcripts is not a new conservative tactic.

Even if Kerry had somehow met T. Boone Pickens’s conditions, none of the members of SBVT ever released any of their journals or records either.

Other claims they made were straight-up lies, and many in the media reported them as such. For example, SBVT accused Mr. Kerry of not signing release forms for his military personnel and medical records (they’ve been banging that medical record drum for decades as well), even though he did do so, posted his records on his Website, and several media outlets reported on those records.

When religions are weak (such as the Baptists in the early Republic), they cry out for the protection of government from the depredations of the state and other religions.

But when they are strong (such as Baptists now), they no longer want equal protection. They want perfection.

And they will, as they always have, reach for the power of the State. In the instant one grabs it, it becomes the State, and loses any claim to holiness.

The best protection for any religious group from the depredations of the State is the separation of Church and State.

The Congressional Prayer Caucus would be howling to the rafters if it was the Roman Catholic Church installed as the state religion (or worse, Islam).

I am not a fan of Tom Nichols. And this is another example of why.

He should tell Mitchell he is not only wrong, but not needed in the Republican Party as that is what led to Trump.

He sure wouldn’t hesitate to call Democrats/progressives out for some of our crazier nuts in the party and often times labels them as reflective of the entire party.

Sorry Tom…you need to kick out the trash. Clean up your own home before looking for dirt in others. You guys own Trump.

According to the weather almanac on my weather radio just now, we’re at 10+ inches of rain for the year. That’s four inches above normal (nearly 50%).

That helps keep the aquifer up, but doesn’t help keep us from being underwater (we are under flood and flash flood watches for this evening with the upcoming round of severe thunderstorms).

We’re getting rocked by a thunderstorm that slid up from the southwest right now. We actually aren’t in a desperate need of water right now; the water table is pretty high at the moment. I don’t know where the rivers are at.

Some of that is personality — LBJ was crude and Reagan smooth; some of it is the era — Johnson and Reagan were both raised inside the kind of implicit racism it’s hard for someone to identify in themselves until they make a major effort. See also Johnson’s sexism, environmental lack of awareness, etc etc. I grew up on “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?” but I rate him more generously now.

Can you find their Korea history? That’s when Grandpa was there. Thanks though. Had no idea about his unit history.

The 5th Armored Division was at Camp/Fort Chaffee after reactivation in 1950 until 1956 when it was deactivated again. During Korea, it served as a training unit and did not actively participate in Korea. If you gramps was in Korea, he was with another unit.

He took the latest ranking of Presidents by professional historians, and normalized it so that Lincoln (top) = 100, while W Harrison = 0. Therefore, Buchanan is –4 and naturally Trump brings up the rear at –9.

Some of the other positions surprise me, but I like Drum’s methodology, though it places Trump rather too close to the rest for my taste.

She and my dad were both fanatical New-Deal Democrats, and my mom at least became more and more liberal as she got older. It really is tough for me to say. Personally, I think he was some of both. I think he definitely had Southern prejudices like many men and women of his generation. But I also think he was horrified by the consequences of the state sanctioned racism that existed under Jim Crow too. To use another President with a similar background and arguably personality, what made Truman into a supporter of desegregating the military was reading about black WWII vets being lynched upon returning home from WWII. I do think LBJ was a bit more cordial individually with African-Americans than Truman would have been though. Reagan is equally interesting. I haven’t studied him as much but my understanding is that Reagan’s father was deeply bothered by racism and he passed that on to his son. So maybe Ronnie would take issue at actual racial language but he would think nothing about using opposition to civil rights to further his own agenda and legitimacy as a politician. IMO I find someone like Reagan worse than LBJ or Truman because I believe actions define you ultimately.

Fortunately by the time that my Dad’s parents decided to enroll Dad in public school(He had previously been in Catholic school but because he was a hellraiser, he became the only one to go to public school), schools were integrated here but not by much. When Dad’s parents downsized though, Dad had much more African-American classmates and even worked with a few of them. I credit a lot of Dad’s enlightened racial attitudes compared with many men of his generation and education level due to the fact that he’s worked with people from all over the place. He’s talked a lot about an Iranian supervisor that helped him actually become a better father since this man had older kids than my brother and I at the time and al ot of wisdom to impart.

During Ford’s senior year, a controversy developed when Georgia Tech said that it would not play a scheduled game with Michigan if a black player named Willis Ward took the field. Students, players, and alumni protested, but university officials condescended to the Georgia Tech request and opted to keep Ward out of the game. Ford was Ward’s best friend on the team and they roomed together while on road trips. Ford reportedly threatened to quit the team in response to the university’s decision, but he eventually agreed to play against Georgia Tech when Ward personally asked him to play.

No, they’re extra long, I’m pretty sure. Even a Four-In-Hand doesn’t leave that much.

BTW, the trick with Windsors is to start with what seems like a whole hell of a lot too much on the fat side, and way too little on the skinny side. You should think you’re WAY OFF, and you’ll get it right.

Every time I do this - every 5-10 years - it amazes me, but it’s true.

It is interesting reading about your father and how he grappled with those problems.

That’s part of that whole “reaching for perfection” thing. No one ever attains it; the ideal is to pass along to children what they learned.

We learn from our parents and they learn from us. My Dad’s no saint but I’m really proud of him for trying to treat everyone fairly regardless of background and not being afraid to call out people who don’t think that way. It’s pretty crazy and I think it says a lot about my parents that they don’t really consider that my niece is half Hispanic and that my brother’s best man and the godfather of his daughter is African-American. I think Dad was lucky to leave parochial school because I think it really opened him up to some new experiences that he never would have had otherwise. What’s funny though is he’s the only one of the six sibs not to graduate Catholic HS but he’s also the only one to not divorced.

Dude, seriously.

George Wallace.

Wallace lost the Democratic primaries in 1964, 1972, and 1976. He then led the racist Democrats out of the party for his “Dixiecrat” movement in 1968, which was then absorbed by the Republicans under Nixon.

He also repudiated his previous racist and segregationist positions, and appointed a huge number of African-Americans to positions in the Alabama government.

In 1979, Wallace said of his stand in the schoolhouse door: “I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over.” He publicly asked for forgiveness from African Americans [from Wikipedia]

His funeral was attended by a great number of African-Americans in acknowledgement of his repudiation of his prior positions on race and segregation.

Cleland is the first one I really remember seeing it. I’m sure it happened before him but I really remember it because of two things- Saxby Chambliss’s ad and Ann Coulter saying that Cleland’s clumsiness caused his paralysis. Both are people who haven’t served in combat roles. As I said earlier, I really think if anything the Democrats have been far more respectful of John McCain’s service than his fellow Republicans have been. I understand why McCain didn’t become a Democrat but he was way, way too willing to forgive the GOP for their attacks on him and furthermore, I was really disappointed that he didn’t defend Kerry after Kerry had defended him. From what I understand, it effected Kerry’s friendship with him.

McGovern was probably one of the most heroic people ever nominated by a major party. Never did get around to reading Stephen E. Ambrose’s book on him when I was in my Ambrose WWII reading phase but I know the details. McGovern was a patriotic man who knew the horrors of war far more than Nixon did.

So much for my mom’s lovely peonies that burst into bloom yesterday, and all my iris and columbines. *sniff*

Has been doing this for about 15 minutes straight now, just hoping it stops soon. And here we just had solar panels installed and turned on barely a month ago — will have to call insurance tomorrow to inspect the roof for damage.

On the other hand, it’s not a tornado and we’re at no risk of flooding and we’re nowhere near a lava flow, so it could be worse. Stay safe, all you lizards in the storm paths.

Very cool! I’ve got a few antique phones, but none that old.

The old rotary dial telephones used stepper switches to make the connection, eliminating the need for a human operator to manually patch the lines together. Basically each click generated by the dial would rotate a selector to another position. Then the next dialed digit would rotate the next selector, etc. With practice, you could dial from a phone without a dial simply by clicking the switch hook in the proper pattern (as seen in one of the Hannibal Lecter movies).

The old stepper switches were loud. Trained techs could often diagnose problems simply by listening.

Heh.

Decided to avoid being depressed by Trump by being cranky about getting old instead.

One of my first jobs in the telephone industry was developing software to support pay phones on new digital switches. I know, what’s a pay phone, right?

We have a pay phone here in our general store. (I wonder if it stumps tourists looking for a telephone that you use a credit card with, though you can use credit cards on pay phones.)

We used to use Hagstrom maps - considered the ‘map of record’ for the NYC area. Saved my ass numerous times when I had to drive to parts of the city I wasn’t familiar with.

Do not laugh too hard that is what the old telephone in my parent’s house looked like before we got a push-button phone.

I remember having a kitchen wall phone with a cord that was long enough to go all the way upstairs for ‘private’ conversations.

And when Touch Tone phones came into existence, I was convinced that the future had arrived.

The WeatherUnderground radar for the Twin Cities is bizarre right now. We’ve got two systems that are moving in different directions passing over us from the SE and SW and the radar animation looks more like an explosion radiating from the center of the cities.

In a couple of minutes it probably won’t look like this anymore…

Since The Older Boy had today off, I decided to fire up the Weber Smokey Mountain and do some semi-serious BBQ.

I started a pork butt at 11

It’s been going for almost 6 hrs, and is hitting the stall. Knowing that this could take hours, even foil-wrapped in a 300 degree oven, and because I wanted to make sure we eat TODAY, I tossed a rack of ribs on about an hour ago…

With luck, there’ll still be pulled pork left when Mrs. FBW and The Younger Boy get home on Wednesday. But if not, well, they got to go to Hawaii, so….

re: #233 A Cranky One

LOL. I never see pix of the old phone equipment without thinking of my mother’s house (SoCal). Around 1968, my father had installed a “state-of-the-art” phone system in the house so he could have multiple lines, and talk directly to his office(s) - they installed a bunch of these electro-mechanical switches in the garage, and I remember the clacking and clunking as a sure sign Dad was on the phone….

FF 25+ years, and visiting home, I noticed the phones had all changed: my mother told me she had had some problems with the line, and the Phone Company (still Pacific Bell IIRC) had sent a (young) tech out to fix it. She sent him to the garage, from which he returned about a minute later, telling her that not only could he not fix it, but he had never seen equipment like that, and had no idea how it worked, still less how to fix the issue. Mom told me they had had to find an older repair guy, on the verge of retirement, to even assess the problem: which he solved by recommending the company replace ALL her phone equipment with modern stuff (I think they took the old gear away for the company museum, myself).

Sure, the phones were a bit more modern - but my mother swore she never got the hang of them - she still preferred the old heavy desktops with push-buttons. I could see why.

A pre-dial phone recording. “Hello, Central. Give Me Heaven”

[Embedded content]

Video

In the town in which I grew up, we had a co-op telephone company. Until it was bought out by General Telephone and they installed a Step-by-Step electro-mechanical central office, we had a switchboard (until the late Seventies).

Our telephone “number” was 12 (one long ring, two short rings).

When General Telephone put in service, that meant my aunt (who lives one mile outside town) got service for the first time (a party line).

When I got my first apartment, you could choose between pulse dialing (rotary) and tone dialing (touch tone). It cost more to get tone dialing, so I bought a touchpad phone that you could switch to sending a pulse signal. I found out that once you connected to the place you were calling via pulse, you could flip the switch over to tone and use it to communicate with automated banking and the like. It saved me about $5 a month on my phone bill.

I love maps. The satellite maps on Google are fun. But so too are the road maps.

I was looking at Denver one time studying where the airport is. I was moving over the mountains and saw all these little lines and zoomed in and then realized they must have been trails at the ski resorts. The detail was pretty cool. I think it even had color designations like runs and maybe lifts.

Switched to satellite view and sure enough…ski trails and lifts.

Sure do remember Thomas Maps. We had to keep multiple sets of Thomas Guides for Souther California in our office when people would ask for directions to their local Social Security Office. Callers would be upset if the guides were being used to direct other callers.

When I started with Social Security 40 years ago we didn’t have access to computers and we had to use microfiche plates to look up their accounts. The plates would be at a minimum six months out of date…

If you were going on a longish trip that your local Thomas Bros didn’t cover, like one of those National Lampoon Vacation holidays….

The AAA had a service called Trip-Tik… they’d cut up a bunch of state and/or county maps, tape together the relevant parts, and give you a custom map of the route for where you told them you wanted.

Party lines, with multiple phones using the same circuit. The phones would ring a different pattern to indicate who was being called. And yes, you could listen to any call. It wasn’t uncommon to pick up the phone and hear someone’s call instead of a dial tone.

Of course today a party line has a whole different meaning. And probably a 900 prefix. ;-)

Maybe not that “long” ago* - in 1978 I lived in a house on the bluff above the PCH in Malibu: and the several units shared a party-line phone system. I recall everyone had their own number, but you occasionally picked up and heard someone else on the line. Though the “landlord” was this cranky engineer/inventor type: I had a feeling he had wired the system up himself to save money…..
