Donald Trump Uses Memorial Day as an Opportunity to Boast and Say How Much Fallen Soldiers Would Admire Him

It’s no longer surprising to see this kind of offensive overbearing narcissism from our so-called president, but we should never stop being appalled at his utter lack of class. Today’s example: he uses Memorial Day as yet another opportunity to brag.

And this time, the craven coward who dodged the draft in Vietnam with phony “bone spurs” dares to speak for soldiers who died so that this disgusting egomaniac could be president. Nauseating.

Do I need to point out that Memorial Day isn’t supposed to be a “happy” occasion?

The division landed at Utah Beach on 24 July 1944 under the command of Major General Lunsford E. Oliver, and moved into combat on 2 August, driving south through Coutances, Avranches, and Vitré, and across the Mayenne River to seize the city of Le Mans, 8 August. Turning north, the division surrounded the Germans in Normandy by advancing, through Le Mêle-sur-Sarthe liberated on 11 August, to the edge of the city of Argentan on 12 August—8 days before the Argentan-Falaise Gap was closed.

Turning Argentan over to the 90th Infantry Division, the 5th Armored advanced 80 miles to capture the Eure River Line at Dreux on 16 August. Bitter fighting was encountered in clearing the Eure-Seine corridor, the second big trap in France. The 5th passed through Paris 30 August to spearhead V Corps drive through the Compiègne Forest, across the Oise, Aisne, and Somme Rivers, and reached the Belgian border at Condé, 2 September.

The division then turned east, advancing 100 miles in 8 hours, and crossed the Meuse at Charleville-Mézières, 4 September. Racing past Sedan, it liberated Luxembourg City on the 10th and deployed along the German border. The reconnaissance squadron of the division sent a patrol across the German border on the afternoon of 11 September to be the first of the Allies to cross the enemy frontier. On 14 September, the 5th penetrated the Siegfried Line at Wallendorf, remaining until the 20th, to draw off enemy reserves from Aachen.

In October it held defensive positions in the Monschau-Hofen sector. The division entered the Hurtgen Forest area in late November and pushed the enemy back to the banks of the Roer River in very heavy fighting. On 22 December it was withdrawn to Verviers and placed in 12th Army Group reserve.

Crossing the Roer on 25 February 1945 the 5th spearheaded the XIII Corps drive to the Rhine, crossing the Rhine at Wesel, 30 March. The Division reached the banks of the Elbe at Tangermunde, 12 April—45 miles from Berlin. On 16 April, the 5th moved to Klotze to wipe out the Von Clausewitz Panzer Division and again drove to the Elbe, this time in the vicinity of Dannenberg. The division mopped up in the Ninth Army sector until VE-day.

Turning north, the division surrounded the Germans in Normandy by advancing, through Le Mêle-sur-Sarthe liberated on 11 August, to the edge of the city of Argentan on 12 August—8 days before the Argentan-Falaise Gap was closed.

Turning Argentan over to the 90th Infantry Division, the 5th Armored advanced 80 miles to capture the Eure River Line at Dreux on 16 August. Bitter fighting was encountered in clearing the Eure-Seine corridor, the second big trap in France. The 5th passed through Paris 30 August to spearhead V Corps drive through the Compiègne Forest, across the Oise, Aisne, and Somme Rivers, and reached the Belgian border at Condé, 2 September.

The division then turned east, advancing 100 miles in 8 hours, and crossed the Meuse at Charleville-Mézières, 4 September. Racing past Sedan, it liberated Luxembourg City on the 10th and deployed along the German border. The reconnaissance squadron of the division sent a patrol across the German border on the afternoon of 11 September to be the first of the Allies to cross the enemy frontier. On 14 September, the 5th penetrated the Siegfried Line at Wallendorf, remaining until the 20th, to draw off enemy reserves from Aachen.

In October it held defensive positions in the Monschau-Hofen sector. The division entered the Hurtgen Forest area in late November and pushed the enemy back to the banks of the Roer River in very heavy fighting. On 22 December it was withdrawn to Verviers and placed in 12th Army Group reserve.

Crossing the Roer on 25 February 1945 the 5th spearheaded the XIII Corps drive to the Rhine, crossing the Rhine at Wesel, 30 March. The Division reached the banks of the Elbe at Tangermunde, 12 April—45 miles from Berlin. On 16 April, the 5th moved to Klotze to wipe out the Von Clausewitz Panzer Division and again drove to the Elbe, this time in the vicinity of Dannenberg. The division mopped up in the Ninth Army sector until VE-day.

The photo was taken during that visit. My brother lives closer and has been to several of the events at Arlington. It’s difficult for my mom (she lives in Nashville) but my brother often visits and takes photos of both the grave and some of the events.

Oh and my dad would have absolutely detested Trump. My mom certainly does. ;-)

The Swift Boat challenge from Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens was his reported offer of $1 million to anyone who can disprove even a single charge made by the Swift Vets and POWs for Truth, formerly the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, during the Presidential election campaign.[1]

Pickens, who had given the group $3 million in funding during the campaign, issued the challenge on November 6, 2007 in Washington, D.C, while serving as chairman of a 40th anniversary gala for The American Spectator magazine.[1][2]

The idea of Barack Obama releasing his college transcripts is not a new conservative tactic.

Even if Kerry had somehow met T. Boone Pickens’s conditions, none of the members of SBVT ever released any of their journals or records either.

Other claims they made were straight-up lies, and many in the media reported them as such. For example, SBVT accused Mr. Kerry of not signing release forms for his military personnel and medical records (they’ve been banging that medical record drum for decades as well), even though he did do so, posted his records on his Website, and several media outlets reported on those records.

Both are people who haven’t served in combat roles. As I said earlier, I really think if anything the Democrats have been far more respectful of John McCain’s service than his fellow Republicans have been. I understand why McCain didn’t become a Democrat but he was way, way too willing to forgive the GOP for their attacks on him and furthermore, I was really disappointed that he didn’t defend Kerry after Kerry had defended him. From what I understand, it effected Kerry’s friendship with him.

Thanks. I guess he got transferred to another unit at some point. BTW regarding Chaffee, that’s where the photo was taken. Seems his brother also did his basic there during WWII. My wife was just in an apologetics argument on Discord with a Muslim who claimed to be from Pakistan. Fair enough, as there are lots of Muslims in Pakistan; no particular reason to dispute that.

After over an hour going back and forth, said Pakistani stated that “an atheist ‘denying God’ is proof you are a ni*CLANG.”

Islam has a few different words for “unbeliever,” but that one isn’t one of them. She just pointed out “and that’s why I’m not religious” and left that conversation.

My mother was from Texas (b. 1913) and she was guilty of using some unfortunate terminology—it’s just what people were raised on. She and my dad were both fanatical New-Deal Democrats, and my mom at least became more and more liberal as she got older. As an example, she was all for Jesse Jackson when he was running for President. So you can’t always go by the vocabulary people picked up when they were young a century ago.

It really is tough for me to say. Personally, I think he was some of both. I think he definitely had Southern prejudices like many men and women of his generation. But I also think he was horrified by the consequences of the state sanctioned racism that existed under Jim Crow too. To use another President with a similar background and arguably personality, what made Truman into a supporter of desegregating the military was reading about black WWII vets being lynched upon returning home from WWII. I do think LBJ was a bit more cordial individually with African-Americans than Truman would have been though. Reagan is equally interesting. I haven’t studied him as much but my understanding is that Reagan’s father was deeply bothered by racism and he passed that on to his son. So maybe Ronnie would take issue at actual racial language but he would think nothing about using opposition to civil rights to further his own agenda and legitimacy as a politician. IMO I find someone like Reagan worse than LBJ or Truman because I believe actions define you ultimately.

Fortunately by the time that my Dad’s parents decided to enroll Dad in public school(He had previously been in Catholic school but because he was a hellraiser, he became the only one to go to public school), schools were integrated here but not by much. When Dad’s parents downsized though, Dad had much more African-American classmates and even worked with a few of them. I credit a lot of Dad’s enlightened racial attitudes compared with many men of his generation and education level due to the fact that he’s worked with people from all over the place. He’s talked a lot about an Iranian supervisor that helped him actually become a better father since this man had older kids than my brother and I at the time and al ot of wisdom to impart.

During Ford’s senior year, a controversy developed when Georgia Tech said that it would not play a scheduled game with Michigan if a black player named Willis Ward took the field. Students, players, and alumni protested, but university officials condescended to the Georgia Tech request and opted to keep Ward out of the game. Ford was Ward’s best friend on the team and they roomed together while on road trips. Ford reportedly threatened to quit the team in response to the university’s decision, but he eventually agreed to play against Georgia Tech when Ward personally asked him to play.

We learn from our parents and they learn from us. My Dad’s no saint but I’m really proud of him for trying to treat everyone fairly regardless of background and not being afraid to call out people who don’t think that way. It’s pretty crazy and I think it says a lot about my parents that they don’t really consider that my niece is half Hispanic and that my brother’s best man and the godfather of his daughter is African-American. I think Dad was lucky to leave parochial school because I think it really opened him up to some new experiences that he never would have had otherwise. What’s funny though is he’s the only one of the six sibs not to graduate Catholic HS but he’s also the only one to not divorced.

Cleland is the first one I really remember seeing it. I’m sure it happened before him but I really remember it because of two things- Saxby Chambliss’s ad and Ann Coulter saying that Cleland’s clumsiness caused his paralysis. Both are people who haven’t served in combat roles. As I said earlier, I really think if anything the Democrats have been far more respectful of John McCain’s service than his fellow Republicans have been. I understand why McCain didn’t become a Democrat but he was way, way too willing to forgive the GOP for their attacks on him and furthermore, I was really disappointed that he didn’t defend Kerry after Kerry had defended him. From what I understand, it effected Kerry’s friendship with him.

Will have to go back and catch up the thread if my router stays on, but here to report a MAJOR thunderclap just rocked the house. I’m currently looking at drifts of hail on my lawn and on the street (southeast metro Denver). Mostly pea-sized, a few up to marble-size, but lots and lots of those nasty little white iceballs. So much for my mom’s lovely peonies that burst into bloom yesterday, and all my iris and columbines. *sniff*

Has been doing this for about 15 minutes straight now, just hoping it stops soon. And here we just had solar panels installed and turned on barely a month ago — will have to call insurance tomorrow to inspect the roof for damage.

On the other hand, it’s not a tornado and we’re at no risk of flooding and we’re nowhere near a lava flow, so it could be worse. Stay safe, all you lizards in the storm paths.

Too much water in Ohio too. We had flash flooding last week. If as expected we get some of the rain from the less than tropical storm coming up from the south on Wednesday, we will have even more flooding, probably in more areas.

Gonna be a hell of a mosquito season with this heat and weather.

Still raining lightly, still rumbling, but the iceballs have stopped falling at the moment. Grass and roofs look like we had half an inch of snow. Hubby says it looks like a good half-inch of water in the formerly-empty birdbath.

Fingers crossed in the hope that we don’t get another band! Hope the Western Slope gets some of this, preferably as gentle rains that fill the reservoirs without flooding the canyons.

Very cool! I’ve got a few antique phones, but none that old.

The old rotary dial telephones used stepper switches to make the connection, eliminating the need for a human operator to manually patch the lines together. Basically each click generated by the dial would rotate a selector to another position. Then the next dialed digit would rotate the next selector, etc. With practice, you could dial from a phone without a dial simply by clicking the switch hook in the proper pattern (as seen in one of the Hannibal Lecter movies).

The old stepper switches were loud. Trained techs could often diagnose problems simply by listening.

We used to use Hagstrom maps - considered the ‘map of record’ for the NYC area. Saved my ass numerous times when I had to drive to parts of the city I wasn’t familiar with.

The WeatherUnderground radar for the Twin Cities is bizarre right now. We’ve got two systems that are moving in different directions passing over us from the SE and SW and the radar animation looks more like an explosion radiating from the center of the cities.

In a couple of minutes it probably won’t look like this anymore…

Since The Older Boy had today off, I decided to fire up the Weber Smokey Mountain and do some semi-serious BBQ.

I started a pork butt at 11

It’s been going for almost 6 hrs, and is hitting the stall. Knowing that this could take hours, even foil-wrapped in a 300 degree oven, and because I wanted to make sure we eat TODAY, I tossed a rack of ribs on about an hour ago…

With luck, there’ll still be pulled pork left when Mrs. FBW and The Younger Boy get home on Wednesday. But if not, well, they got to go to Hawaii, so….

None of our county roads are on something like Mapquest or Google Maps.

LOL. I never see pix of the old phone equipment without thinking of my mother’s house (SoCal). Around 1968, my father had installed a “state-of-the-art” phone system in the house so he could have multiple lines, and talk directly to his office(s) - they installed a bunch of these electro-mechanical switches in the garage, and I remember the clacking and clunking as a sure sign Dad was on the phone….

FF 25+ years, and visiting home, I noticed the phones had all changed: my mother told me she had had some problems with the line, and the Phone Company (still Pacific Bell IIRC) had sent a (young) tech out to fix it. She sent him to the garage, from which he returned about a minute later, telling her that not only could he not fix it, but he had never seen equipment like that, and had no idea how it worked, still less how to fix the issue. Mom told me they had had to find an older repair guy, on the verge of retirement, to even assess the problem: which he solved by recommending the company replace ALL her phone equipment with modern stuff (I think they took the old gear away for the company museum, myself).

Sure, the phones were a bit more modern - but my mother swore she never got the hang of them - she still preferred the old heavy desktops with push-buttons. I could see why.

In the town in which I grew up, we had a co-op telephone company. Until it was bought out by General Telephone and they installed a Step-by-Step electro-mechanical central office, we had a switchboard (until the late Seventies).

Our telephone “number” was 12 (one long ring, two short rings).

When General Telephone put in service, that meant my aunt (who lives one mile outside town) got service for the first time (a party line).

When I got my first apartment, you could choose between pulse dialing (rotary) and tone dialing (touch tone). It cost more to get tone dialing, so I bought a touchpad phone that you could switch to sending a pulse signal. I found out that once you connected to the place you were calling via pulse, you could flip the switch over to tone and use it to communicate with automated banking and the like. It saved me about $5 a month on my phone bill.

I love maps. The satellite maps on Google are fun. But so too are the road maps.

I was looking at Denver one time studying where the airport is. I was moving over the mountains and saw all these little lines and zoomed in and then realized they must have been trails at the ski resorts. The detail was pretty cool. I think it even had color designations like runs and maybe lifts.

Switched to satellite view and sure enough…ski trails and lifts.

Sure do remember Thomas Maps. We had to keep multiple sets of Thomas Guides for Souther California in our office when people would ask for directions to their local Social Security Office. Callers would be upset if the guides were being used to direct other callers.

When I started with Social Security 40 years ago we didn’t have access to computers and we had to use microfiche plates to look up their accounts. The plates would be at a minimum six months out of date…

A file cabinet might work better… .

Remembering when I started to play chess, opening theory was in a pair of books—Modern Chess Openings and Chess Openings: Theory and Practice. MCO would be revised every couple years.

You could go through the books and find the errors in analysis, play someone who didn’t do that and beat them.

Now Chessbase has millions of games online and Chess Informant now is online with their analysis.

Takes the fun out of the game…

If you were going on a longish trip that your local Thomas Bros didn’t cover, like one of those National Lampoon Vacation holidays….

The AAA had a service called Trip-Tik… they’d cut up a bunch of state and/or county maps, tape together the relevant parts, and give you a custom map of the route for where you told them you wanted.

ETA: with hi-lighter marking the motels, restaurants, attractions etc that you expressed interest in.

Party lines, with multiple phones using the same circuit. The phones would ring a different pattern to indicate who was being called. And yes, you could listen to any call. It wasn’t uncommon to pick up the phone and hear someone’s call instead of a dial tone.

Of course today a party line has a whole different meaning. And probably a 900 prefix. ;-)

When I was a kid, single-party lines were in darker type in the phone book. It got so we were the only on page after page. They’d try and sneak other people onto our line, and my mom would call and scream at them and they’d wait a while before trying again….

Maybe not that “long” ago* - in 1978 I lived in a house on the bluff above the PCH in Malibu: and the several units shared a party-line phone system. I recall everyone had their own number, but you occasionally picked up and heard someone else on the line. Though the “landlord” was this cranky engineer/inventor type: I had a feeling he had wired the system up himself to save money…..

Ah, yes, the Trip-Tiks. I have about 15 of those in three “Maps and Brochures” boxes I amassed while sorting my mom’s papers last year. Memories of trips she took!
Need to find someone who archives that sort of ephemera, because I have maps and souvenirs dating back to the 30’s.
