Roseanne Barr Tweets Ugly Racist Attack on Valerie Jarrett; Her ABC Show Is Canceled; Right Wingers Mobilize to Defend Her

Politics • Views: 37,201

Who could ever have predicted that someone who posed for a photo like the one above would say something so virulently racist it forced ABC to cancel her hit show within hours?

‘Roseanne’ canceled after star’s racist tweet.

She was replying to another right wing goon on Twitter who was attacking ex-Obama aide Valerie Jarrett.

The real disgrace, however, is that Roseanne had a show on ABC in the first place, because she’s been tweeting and saying things just as bad as this for years.

Meanwhile, right wing Twitter is already mobilizing to defend the indefensible, of course.

This is Donald Trump’s America.

I checked out Roseanne’s Twitter timeline and it is every bit as toxic as you would expect from a racist nazi shitgoblin.

Here she defends her Hitler cookies photo shoot claiming she is making fun of “Hitler.”

Nope, if you were making fun of Hitler you would be dressed up as a Holocaust survivor holding a plate of Hitler cookies.

I got dragged by some commentators here when the reboot of the show was announced, with variations of “well, let’s wait and see what happens.”

To be fair, I don’t own a television set so I wouldn’t be able to see her show whether I wanted to or not.

I am surprised how fast a threatened boycott of ABC ended her show - a matter of hours.

Looking across social media I see the usual suspects (conservatives) complaining about Freeze Speech (ignoring as usual that pushing back against such statements is also free speech).

Lubbock is noted; indeed, notorious; for its cheap labor economy.

Lubbock strip club sued by dancers, allegations of federal wage violations

On Friday, two women sued the parent company of Jaguars in Lubbock for allegations of federal wage violations.

According to the lawsuit, “Jaguars is recorded in Texas as an ‘Assumed Name’ owned by JAI and is a restaurant and bar that provides adult entertainment to its patrons.”

The women, whose stage names are Kyoiee and Athena, claim Jaguars violated federal wage law “by unlawfully designating their exotic dancers as independent contractors.” They claim they were denied their right to federal minimum wage and overtime pay.

Kyoiee and Athena are the first two plaintiffs, but they are seeking class-action status.

After repeatedly reporting the woman (maybe a woman who knows) to Facebook under a variety of categories (impersonation, scam, &c), Facebook keeps telling her the account is not violating their terms-of-service. Perhaps Ms. Shoenkopf needs some help from other Facebook users to get this person off Facebook?

(Romance scammers rarely target one person. My wife was once the target of a Romance scam, and has written about how they work.)

Dan is on disbility himself. There’s a lot of good material there with the cast of characters in the family and all that goes into those relationships. I think Sara Gilbert meant well, but good intentions don’t fix jack shit. So, for the next week or two we’ll hear about how liberals ruin everything and blah meh garble snort. More here agreed with you.

“Dragged”, AM? Hell, you were in the majority here on the Roseanne continuation.

If anything, those few Lizards, such as myself, who, at first, advised to give the show a chance on its own merits (having actually watched it) instead of dismissing it out-of-hand strictly because of Roseanne’s behavior and comments off-air (which are plentiful and heinous) were browbeat quite a bit with said off-air comments/behavior as a reason why no one should watch or enjoy it. I even had a long-time Lizard say straight up (but paraphrasing a bit), “fuck Goodman, Gilbert, Metcalf, and the rest of the cast and crew for doing this show”; after that, I just kept my mouth shut.

Yeah, Roseanne’s a racist, bigoted POS and I’d just as soon the continuation had never been green-lighted to begin with, because the show was, by-and-large, pretty good and faithful to the first run and that Goodman, Gilbert, Metcalf, and the rest of the cast (who, IMO, were bringing their A-games) are now saddled with the fallout.

Right, which is perfectly in keeping with Sara’s cynical willingness to thrust this hateful, racist, mentally ill person back into the national consciousness all because it was profitable. Don’t you see, none of that stuff matters, because it was Roseanne’s show and she’s such a miserable, odious POS IRL that the show needed to be killed, burnt to a crisp, the studio where the show was taped destroyed and the earth where it sat salted, and rest of the cast branded for life.

I think the reason they chose Roseanne was because it would appeal to a lot of the people they were hoping to communicate with. Not a single one of us needs to hear anything of what they are saying. But they thought they could control the beast.

I wish it had succeeded. There’s no way, around here, someone like me was ever going to be able to get through to people the way a show like that would. And there’s no way you could produce a similar sounding show without having it’s history. It would have been cancelled before you could build up the audience. If the actress were dead, maybe they could have done an after-Roseanne, but not now.

Edit: Most people have forgotten that it kind of dried out. Plus, now she has grandchildren.

American entertainment seems obsessed with reboots instead of creating original material. I guess I should narrow that to network and the movie business, but it seems like it’s either a reboot or reality TV and that’s all they have. Granted, it’s on a premium network (Showtime) and is an adaptation of a British show, but Shameless did a pretty good job of addressing a lot of the same issues in a clearly working class white family on the south side of Chicago. That said, it might be a bad example because it would not have worked on basic cable let alone network.

I won’t go nearly as far as Frank did on Gilbert, but one thing she isn’t is stupid; you have to remember, Gilbert grew up on the set of Roseanne, she knew Roseanne very well, and tried to do right by her and the rest of the cast by helping to bring the show back, even with Roseanne’s cringe-worthy behavior and comments in the intervening twenty years.

I don’t think Gilbert’s intents were “mercenary” or driven by greed or ego because she’s had and continues to have a good career outside of Roseanne, but she did read the tea leaves and no doubt thought a Roseanne revival would work, but there was only one problem, one she no doubt tried to solve or mitigate but ultimately couldn’t: Roseanne herself.

Well, it is very obvious by the blowback you initially got from LGF members that Roseanne was nuclear to many a liberal/progressive sensibility.

So I have a question. If you know more than half of your potential audience in not even going to give it a chance, then to who were you trying to sell the show?

Could she have thought due the rabid Trump base and how passionate they are she could make a go of it on those people?

If that is the case, then the premise you say she had was all wrong, wasn’t it?

But if she thought she could take that slant and make money off the wingnuts, then she was wrong from the get-go and most likely the sympathetic people she was trying to portray to any liberal were going to be seen as jokes to wingnuts.

I admit, I is confused by what the creators were hoping to do.

They had to have known something like this could happen — especially since she’s kept tweeting racist shit over and over and over — and they should’ve taken some serious steps to protect their investment in the show.

re: #166 goddamnedfrank

I don’t care about what they were trying to do I care about what they did. They used these cases as thinly developed foils intended to humanize and rehabilitate the racist Trump supporting main character. The entire project was designed from its inception to elevate the cohesiveness of white family members above all other ethical and moral considerations. It was one big dysfunctional Thanksgiving dinner, where everyone fights and argues but realizes they’re family in the end . The moral was how that realization and reconciliation *trumps* the actual violence inherent in the systemic, institutional racism that the real Roseanne Barr champions. The entire endeavor was a toxic whitewash and the real Roseanne’s tweets today and the right’s reaction to the show’s cancellation incinerate any notion that Gilbert’s ill advised Pollyanna attempt to advance or heal the national divide utterly failed if for no other reason than you can’t reliably ally with monsters.

re: #168 JordanRules

The alt right trolls that we track here have been spewing dangerous racist rhetoric, vile conspiracy theories and the like for years too and I don’t think anybody is hard-pressed to support their platform. I don’t get why she’d be different. It sends a number of horrible messages to everyone and is particularly shitty to those who are her behavior threatens.

They should have done a show without her. That show with her is not some magical talisman to repair broken parts of the electorate.

Instead of cancelling the show outright, ABC, Carsey-Werner, and Gilbert should have done a Valerie/The Hogan Family, fired Roseanne from the series, and killed Roseanne Conner off for the beginning of the second season. It probably wouldn’t have lasted past another season and I don’t know if the rest of the cast would have been down for that, but it would have been an old-college-try attempt to divorce the continuation from Roseanne’s IRL awfulness.

re: #137 Belafon

Which is why they wrote about cross-dressing children, understanding neighbors from the Middle East, and had the son married to a black woman. //

I realize people here are cynical, but there’s plenty to suggest that what they were trying to do with the show went well beyond the money.

I’m not convinced that having such elements on the show makes it a good thing. Hear me out here.

I understand that many of us here, and people like Sara Gilbert, see a show where racist Trumpers encounter such normal things as interracial marriage, foreign neighbours, and so on, and where the show resolves in a relatively decent way, as a good thing - an opportunity to show these things in a positive light, perhaps even to teach Trumpers (the audience) that such encounters can be humanising and normal. I get that many people on the show probably believe that, and were trying to do that. From that angle, perhaps a show like that was a good thing.

But the problem is, that’s not how it works. Watching Roseanne isn’t going to make a single Trumper more decent. Trumpers are already completely able to have total logical disconnects in their head and at all times in their lives. They can have good relations with their Mexican neighbour and still cheer for violence against Mexican ‘animals’ and for taking their kids away. They can have a daughter who has an abortion and still picket abortion clinics and scream in the face of other women. They can work on a show with their liberal friends and coworkers and happily go through episodes of normal, human interaction with gays and foreigners and still pose as Hitler baking Jew cookies and spread anti-Semitism and racism. The premise of Roseanne - take Trumpers and portray them as normal, everyday people with the potential for good, positive interactions - makes everyone feel better. It makes us feel better for doing outreach, and for treating Trumpers as normal people just like us. It makes Trumpers feel better because they see people like them on TV, having the same interactions they do, being accepted into normal society, and still getting to be as hateful in private and on the internet as they like.

It’s the same premise that is pushed every day in the NYT and the media in general - treat Trumpers as normal, treat their racism and hate as just a political point of view, and as long as we don’t talk about the things we disagree on, we can all be friends. And in private, you can be as liberally liberal as you libs are, and Trumpers can spread anti-Semitism, racism, and vote for monsters, but that’s not what’s important - what’s important is that we can all come together.

As GDF says, politics is not just a polite disagreement between white people. A show like Roseanne pretends it is. Portraying the human side of Trumpers seems like a good thing, but it’s really not. We think it is because we feel a responsibility to reach out to the other side, and they think it is because they want to be accepted as they are, full of hate, rather than ostracised. But all it does is allow us to gloss over their hatred and normalise it. I don’t need to see their human side. I already know they can act like humans in public. It’s how so many of them went hidden in normal society for so long.

And thereby excuse Rosanne Barr’s awful racism in pursuit of profit.

Season 1 Episode 16: Rosanne suddenly goes into the hospital after catching an amoeba brain-eating disease, lingers in the hospital for several episodes, then dies. Season ends with the big family funeral and how they’ll go on.

two and a half men saw it coming with charlie sheen and (my guess) had him written out of the show long before they pulled the trigger. it’s not a stretch - have rose kill him, closed casket, we dont need the actor….

What we’re all hoping to do, make money. It really is that simple. Goodman is the only one who’s been consistently working and even then he’s pretty much always gotten supporting actor roles. They saw an opportunity to sell nostalgia and comforting familiarity to a white America that was starving for validation, and they took it.

We all have been. But Roseanne isn’t going to make a single Trumper more decent. What’s going to influence them more - a five minute denouement once a week on Roseanne or eighteen hours a day of FOX and Facebook?

Furthermore, many Trumpers probably already do exactly what they see on Roseanne - they talk nicely to their Muslim neighbour, they have coffee with their gay coworker, and then they get on Twitter or Facebook, spread racism and hate, and vote for Trump. An accurate portrayal of themselves on national TV isn’t going to make them a better person.

Television as we used to know it - defined by broadcast channels grouped under the umbrellas of a few large networks - is going away.

Every year the percentage of American households who are tuned into primetime shows on the largest networks declines.

Roseanne was an interesting, from a business view, attempt at getting a hit show that did the number of viewers akin to what networks used to pull 20 to 30 years ago.

That DisneyABC so quickly turned off her show tells us that the network is aware that any negative press is just too much to bear, in the current business of television.

While the reboot show got good numbers as desired, that was never going to remain. All shows decline and Roseanne is no exception.

Also, it is pretty clear that social media now is more influential than viewer numbers.

Selling advertising in the goal, and that more potential customers for advertisers are to be found outside of broadcast television will be the doom of broadcast shows having the value they once did.

And, the people watching many of the current network shows are old, very old. The imbalance in age groups watching TV is quite noticeable.

Advertisers know these things.

And the old racists who want to defend Roseanne are just not important to the millions of young people who, if offended, will just never turn off ABC and go to Youtube or Twitch or whatever.

Met Arnold at a BBQ place in Loveland, CO. Just happened to be in front of me and the Mrs in line (which we were the only people there). Arnold was nice (great to the staff and tipped a couple hundred bucks). The funny thing is he ate 2 pieces of pie at the counter waiting for his to go order of 10 lbs of BBQ. On his way out he bought 3 more pieces of pie.

Was a good day.

Gotta say, I’ve never seen a bad talk show interview with Selleck. He’s got tons of charm and wit and humor, and he doesn’t have much trouble getting the audience eating out of his hand. :)

I still remember my mom, no conservative not liking how Rosie O’Donnell treated him in an interview. The funny thing was my conservative friends liked Rosie in the mid 90’s but I found her obnoxious. Trump’s attacks on her are still pathetic of course.

just to point out, imdb will list any crappy project a person is working on. It could be one of those crappy christian production companies like kirk cameron keeps doing that are decidedly nothing to do with hollywood. I haven’t looked at the projects in question but I’d be surprisedb if any of those guys (other than Tim Allen) are getting work through any real production companies, mostly because they can’t act, not because they are being blackballed.

Sorbo had a three episode run on Supergirl last season, so he’s getting some mainstream work. As for the rest of it, in the industry, work is work.

The producers or ABC itself should’ve required Roseanne to shut down her Twitter account. They had to have known something like this could happen — especially since she’s kept tweeting racist shit over and over and over — and they should’ve taken some serious steps to protect their investment in the show.

I’m glad they didn’t. I’m sure they thought her racist tweets would build up the audience, but she’d never go that far.

re: #185 Renaissance_Man

America is still coming to terms with what Trump’s election means. Not the Trump being President part, but the part where a guy who’s as openly racist as that is acceptable to so many Americans. White folks with Trumpers among their friends and family are trying to make nice, to pretend it’s all normal. Single Trumpers are wondering why nobody wants to date them. Many, many people don’t want to accept what it means.

So, you have “Roseanne”, with a family that disagrees about politics but they still get along. Heartwarming.

And to make us all one big happy family, they toss in transgender, black, Muslim folks etc, who all are ‘just regular folks’. And of course, Roseanne gets to know them and like them, but doesn’t say, “Holy shit! I was so wrong about these people! I can’t believe I voted for a guy who wanted to ban all of them!”, because the basic attitude doesn’t change.

I think this phenomenon is called, “You’re one of the good ones”, as in, “Black people are too lazy and dependent. Not you (insert name of black acquaintance), you’re one of the good ones.” It allows them to keep their prejudices untouched, while stillbeing friends with one of Those People.

Now, maybe if they had an episode where the black daughter-in-law wouldn’t come to the Conner’s house, and when Roseanne finally goes over there to ask why, DIL tells here that she couldn’t stand associating with someone who would choose a man like Trump for President, and describe why. And then Roseanne realizes how racist Trump is, and how racist SHE is, and that she made a horrible mistake in voting for him.

But no, they wouldn’t do that, because it would take away from the ‘one big happy family’ narrative.

Well, it is very obvious by the blowback you initially got from LGF members that Roseanne was nuclear to many a liberal/progressive sensibility.

So I have a question. If you know more than half of your potential audience in not even going to give it a chance, then to who were you trying to sell the show?

I don’t necessarily disagree with you. But I do want to say maybe they wanted to sell the show to… new audiences.

This is sorta related to something that’s been burning up the Angry Nerd demographic on Twitter lately. They announced a new ThunderCats cartoon, and the art style is a lot more like Steven Universe than the old Masters of the Universe look of the original cartoon. So the Angry Nerds are angry because Their Childhood Has Been Ruined, and they overlook the fact that the old cartoon would never appear on a modern network, because most viewers, who are younger than the Generation X’ers who grew up on the cartoon, would hate the look of it.

So you can make a show into a vehicle for Pure Hardcore Nostalgia, or you can gun for a new, larger audience while hoping to pick up a few nostalgia viewers along the way.

I think the Roseanne producers gambled that nostalgia would bring the old viewers back while letting the new style of the show attract more viewers who weren’t familiar with the original. The cards initially fell their way, until they didn’t.

And you could levy many of the same charges Frank and others have above against it as they have against Roseanne, yet AitF is seen as a cultural touchstone of the 70s. It certain helps that Lear, O’Connor, Struthers, and Reiner were very active liberals, as Gilbert, Goodman, and much of the principal cast of Roseanne are/tend to be, but the X-factor that just couldn’t be negated was Roseanne herself.

Carroll O’Connor wasn’t a bigot, he just played one on TV.

Because the man can fucking act his ass off.

Him and Daniel Day Lewis, as a couple of examples, are true masters of their craft, complete chameleons on the screen.

You’ll never get the same performance in different movies from either one of them

When I watched “Last of the Mohicans”, it was so hard to believe that Cecil from “A Room With A View” was Hawkeye. Then I saw him in “Gangs of New York”, and he was neither one of them.

Yeah, I know. It’s called “Acting”. But most actors, you always see the commonality between roles. Oldman and Lewis, you don’t.

As an aside, Mrs. FBW and I have been enjoying “A Series Of Unfortunate Events” on Netflix, with Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf. We were comparing his performance with Jim Carrey’s Count Olaf from the movie. Carrey’s Count Olaf is really hard to see in each of the characters he pretends to be, but in Harris’s, it’s always obviously the same guy. But you see, Count Olaf is supposed to be a BAD actor, so he SHOULD always be obviously Count Olaf, except to all the stupid adults around the Beaudelaires.

Many shows may turn off a large percentage of the potential audience — for example, more than half the population is not interested in science fiction or family comedies or police dramas etc ( a different half in each case). You are never going to develop a show with a loyal fanbase if you try to satisfy everyone. You develop a show that will appeal to a certain audience and then hope that you attract enough viewers to keep the show on the air.

The only week “Roseanne” wasn’t the #1 show in the demo (18-49) was the week of “The Big Bang” finale. That’s what disturbed me most about the show—that it did so well among young peeps.

Relative to other shows it did well.

However, as a portion of the of the US population compared to portion of viewers, the younger demo is less likely to watch any broadcast television.

Also, look at the three different breakdowns of age groups, 18-34, 18-49, 25-54. The show did much worse in the 18-34 group than it did in the 25-54:

Trump should golf more

Imagine if President Trump signed his signature tax-cut legislation last December—and then resolved to keep his hands off the economy, unless there was an emergency.

It’s likely the stock market, which is down for the year, would be up handsomely instead. The United States would be getting along with its allies instead of picking trade fights with most of them. CEOs would be more confident, and farmers wouldn’t be worrying about getting shut out of important foreign markets. Republican odds of keeping control of Congress next year would probably be higher.

That’s not what is happening. As an encore to his tax-cut legislation, which businesses generally applauded, Trump has spent 2018 threatening tariffmania, which businesses generally condemn. Trump’s latest move, announced May 29, is a vow to impose tariffs of 25% on $50 billion of Chinese technology imports, beginning in mid-June. That news contributed to a stock market selloff (as did political chaos in Italy.)

My wife is watching a documentary on the ketogenic diet (used to control certain types of epilepsy by substituting almost all carbohydrates with fats). I am partly on that diet (I eat very few carbohydrates in combination with my medication, as prescribed by physicians).

It appears that some doofus quacks are promoting this as a cure for diabetes and cancer. (The hypothesis is that fewer carbohydrates means less need for insulin).

Daniel Plainview is one of the most fascinating characters in modern film, to me.

Furthermore, as we’re seeing now, a lot of ‘cultural touchstones’ of the past fifty years in American culture have also been about perpetuating the dominance of the white, middle-class male. I didn’t watch All in the Family, but the bits I’ve seen of it tell me that it’s no different.

I would see a few episodes here and there in syndication as a kid in the 80s. What I’ve read about All in the Family is that Archie Bunker was supposed to be the butt of the jokes, but a lot of viewers saw Meathead as the butt of the jokes. That happens a lot to storytellers - the story they try to tell and the story that the audience gets can often be different.

China Focus: 5,000-year-long Chinese civilization verified

Chinese civilization has been verified as having existed for at least 5,000 years by a comprehensive investigation into the origin and early development of Chinese civilization, Guan Qiang, deputy director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) said on Monday.

The investigation began in 2001 with fourth stage completed in 2016.

“Years of large-scale excavations in the ruins of Liangzhu in east China’s Zhejiang Province, the Taosi site in north China’s Shanxi Province, the Shimao site in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, and the Erlitou site in central China’s Henan Province have provided proof,” said Wang Wei, who works on the project.

On the basis of scientific summary of field archaeology achievements scored in China over the past 90 years, the research team carried out multidisciplinary studies ranging over social division of labor, class differentiation, central cities and compulsory power so as to present prominent features that define the dawn of a civilized society in ancient China, said Guan.

I think you missed my point.

I was going with what people here were stating the show was trying to achieve. I was asking how could that be achieved in this case due to the toxicity of Roseanne.

The show obviously had baggage right from the start and that was exposed here when people brought it up after the first episode. The kickback was immediate.

That is not good for any show.

And I admitted that the whole thing confused me.

I think if you are starting with a fresh new show everything you say is correct.

China is very keen to promote the idea of Chinese racial and cultural superiority. They are significantly invested into the idea of parallel evolution - that humanity arose in China independent of Africa, so that they can be racially pure and separate from black people.

The West isn’t aware, by and large, of just how racist most of Asia is. Racism is endemic and cultural throughout China, India and SE Asia. It’s going to be interesting over the next thirty years or so as Asia opens up to the rest of the world culturally and we learn just how backwards their cultures are in so many respects.

Another journalism fail, this time from a high-brow think-tank:

Covering climate change: What reporters get wrong and how to get it right

Even before getting into the meat of the article, of course we’d all say that journalists get climate change wrong.

But….

[…]
WHAT REPORTERS GET WRONG: They focus on subjects that make it hard for readers to relate.

“Most climate change stories are about weather, sea ice, glaciers, ocean temperatures, which is another reason why people tune out … people care about stories that are relatable.

“That’s part of the problem with climate change reporting, people feel like they don’t have any entry point, they don’t have a ramp into it, and they don’t get how it affects them.”
[…]

Well, excuse, but if “weather” is not “relatable” to people, what is?

If there’s one topic everyone around the world mentions to other people they meet on the street, or digitally (such as here), it is… the weather.

Weather is the most relatable topic that is not personal.

Sigh…

Ohio likely to get flooded… .

Valid 00Z Wed May 30 2018 - 00Z Fri Jun 01 2018

…Subtropical Depression Alberto to spread heavy rainfall from the Deep
South northward into vast sections of the Tennessee/Ohio Valleys and
interior Carolinas…

…Severe thunderstorm threat looms for much of Oklahoma/Kansas into
southeastern Nebraska today…

…Record overnight warmth likely generally to the east of Alberto’s
forecast track…

Although Alberto is slowly weakening as it tracks north through the
Tennessee Valley today it is generating thunderstorms across much of
eastern Gulf states, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Tennessee Valley. Heavy
rain from Alberto over this area warranted a moderate risk for excessive
rainfall with the increased threat for flash flooding. As the remnants of
this system lifts in the Ohio Valley on Wednesday the area of slight risk
expands northward into the Midwest, Ohio Valley and northern Mid-Atlantic.
Additional amounts of 2 to 4 inches of rain, with isolated higher totals,
is likely to fall from northern sections of Alabama/Georgia northward
across western Tennessee/Kentucky into southern Illinois. For the latest
storm totals from Alberto, please visit the latest storm summary at:
wpc.ncep.noaa.gov. Elsewhere across the
Eastern Seaboard, unsettled conditions should continue with daily chances
for showers and thunderstorms.

It’s why I used to defend America from charges of racism - because five years ago, I knew Americans still did racist things, but at least it was frowned upon here, whereas in most of the rest of the world, people were flagrantly racist, with governments that openly pushed racist policies. Of course, that was before America became a proto-fascist dictatorship, and more importantly, before I worked in the prison system and learned about things like black voter suppression, massive disparity in the justice system, and police oppression of blacks, not to mention the demonisation of Hispanics and the white cultural hegemony of the US media, especially the NYT.

Yeah it’s unfortunate. My niece was saying that she couldn’t be “her mother’s last name” because she’s too light. I want her to embrace her unique background. She’s got cousins on three different continents.

Everyone comes to it in their own way and in their own time.

re: #376 Renaissance_Man

It’s why I used to defend America from charges of racism - because five years ago, I knew Americans still did racist things, but at least it was frowned upon here, whereas in most of the rest of the world, people were flagrantly racist, with governments that openly pushed racist policies. Of course, that was before America became a proto-fascist dictatorship, and more importantly, before I worked in the prison system and learned about things like black voter suppression, massive disparity in the justice system, and police oppression of blacks, not to mention the demonisation of Hispanics and the white cultural hegemony of the US media, especially the NYT.

That may be the most pinko sentence I’ve ever written and I feel a vague urge to wash. Yet it’s also completely true, and the old me would have been just as appalled as I am now.

The past few years really woke me up too. I think it’s what I’ve seen but also connecting with cousins who aren’t from here. I have a close connection with a cousin, his father’s grandfather and my mom’s grandfather were brothers. Were it not for fate, he would be hte one here in America and me in Slovenia. I don’t plan to drop my citizenship or anything like that and I do like being an American but I’ve started seeing myself as a human being first like the Chief Dan George character in Little Big Man.

I’m more than willing to get rid of Bill Maher. Fuck that guy.

Hey, I am not a big fan of the guy at all. I am just wondering if these people REALLY think what Maher said about Trump is truly comparable to what Roseanne said today about Valerie Jarrett.

I guess I am with HappyWarrior…the people drawing this comparison really are plain old stupid. We have seen it right here on LGF, conservatives being utterly and completely impervious to context.

They’re not being stupid. They’re being disingenuous in order to deflect responsibility/blame for one of their own. They know why comparing a black person to an ape is vile racism. But in No True Scotsman fashion they have to circle the wagons for their own. And since their own can’t be defended in this case, they have to establish that the other side is just as bad/worse. So, here’s an example of an alleged liberal call Trump an ape. They know exactly what the fuck they are doing.

But I get your point. I just seen why they went with the premise.

That’s quite interesting to me from a UK perspective. The original UK version of “Shameless”, at least the first 3 series of it, were huge in the UK: well watched, critically acclaimed, and hugely influential on future drama series. We’re talking about a series that is generally regarded as a milestone in UK drama, really setting the bar.

If that thing in the burger joint tweet is supposed to be a North Korean nuclear warhead, I’ve got a number of concerns with it.

If it’s a two-stage device, they’ve got the “peanut” radiation jacket right, except…if this forward bulge is the primary, what the hell is in the aft one? It can’t be a spherical secondary or a cylindrical secondary, either.

I think it’s just a prop that’s intended to sorta-kinda remind you of our W-80 warhead, designed by somebody who doesn’t know shit. And besides, I’m morally certain it’s way too small—the W-80 was a tour de force of packaging—I guarantee they can’t equal it.

— —

Maher eschews political labels, referring to himself as “practical”. In the past, he has described himself as a libertarian, and has also referred to himself “as a progressive, as a sane person”

Also

Maher is a board member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

en.wikipedia.org

The second inset up there definitely precludes “sane person” in the first.

I suppose “in the past” means he’s outgrown libertarianism.

A respondent at Quora also addressed his past position on libertarianism. It seems similar to my wife’s past position (except she was an officer in Colorado’s Libertarian Party, whereas Bill Maher simply identified that way).

So I’ll revise my position on Mr. Maher’s politics based on you bringing that to my attention. He’s still a jerk, however.

True. Tom Selleck? Gary Sinise? Maybe better picks. I actually really respect the work Sinise does with vets.

sadly Tom is too old for anymore Parker novel adaptations (hell, they may be out of books for that series anyway). I also enjoyed Magnum P.I. No, he isn’t a brilliant actor, but he’s decent enough for what he does.
