About every other day, either Hawaii Bro or my SIL post on FB that, no, the Big Island is not all covered in lava, and if you want to know the real skinny, check the USGS site, not the Mainland news.

And then there’s this. Sigh.

Love how Conservatives are openly saying that they’re okay with racism and thus tying Republicans even more tightly to racists. This makes it impossible for the Candace Owens of the world to woo me with their b.s.

It doesn’t help that Owens is a dumbass. Yesterday, she was tweeting that the Fire Department isn’t socialism. It’s something we all pay for that everyone has access to.

Or that this was some sort of bipartisan effort to call out Rosanne Barr.

Twitter is rife right now with conservatives defending her.

FOX is trying to magic balancefairy this, when in reality her most ardent supporters are also Trump supporters (and probably watch FOX).

The effort to distance Barr from Trump is a preview of 2021, when Donny’s fall from grace will be followed quickly by a ritualistic effort to render him an “unperson,” as someone who just happened to end up in the White House despite the best efforts of those who saw through him. Within a year of his leaving office, every wingnut from here to Azerbaijan will insist he never supported Trump but instead supported (insert “benign” policy) that Trump promised to them.

The “racially-charged” media is now trying to move to their fallback position: “She should have been given the opportunity to apologize and pledge to change herself!”

The underlying thinking being (of course) that Barr is simply a flawed human being who can be reasoned with, who can be convinced that her personal beliefs are wrong and can come around. The reason for that thinking is because the white journalists who loved her show are usually the same ones who think that if they “humanize” virulently racist Trump supporters by showing they like baseball and hot dogs, then we can write off their beliefs as “a difference of opinion.”

Dubya was popular with wingnuts as well…right up until the very end. Then they decided that his decision to bail out the banks and auto industry rather than ascribing to the “BURN IT ALL DOWN!” mentality of the far-right meant he was not Of The Body. That’s when the “Tea Party” suddenly rose and wingnuts started insisting they were really “independents” and only voted for the GOP because they were “fiscal conservatives.”

Nope, even in December 2008, Bush had 66% support from conservative Republicans, and 50% from moderate/liberal Republicans. Granted those numbers are bad for support within your own party, but let’s not pretend that the GOP really abandoned Bush. Some did, but the cause of his numbers being so low was that 3/4 of independents and 90% of Democrats had unfavorable views of him by the end.

On another note, I’m tired of white people saying “Yeah racism is bad but we should be trying to forgive and listen.” Listen, I’m okay with forgiveness but we shouldn’t just shrug off racist rhetoric and behavior like “Oh no big deal, you apologized, let’s forget it.” We’re never going to truly learn that racism is bad if we just shrug and act like saying something racist is akin to accidentally spilling a beer on a stranger. Roseanne has revealed who she is with her tweets and rhetoric. Valerie Jarrett as far as I know has never communicated with her on Twitter. Roseanne is old enough to know that calling an African American an ape is racist as shit. But hey Roseanne at least you got your victim martyr cookie like all the otehr shitty conservatives out there who get one when they get called out for acting like shitty people.

Or the attacking of a man who was a child throughout WWII. Funny how George Soros is akin to Hitler to them but they defend Robert E. Lee who actually put captured African-American Prisoners of War into slavery.

The educated elite should stop telling real Merika that they shouldn’t be jerks to people who aren’t like them. The thing that pisses me off a lot about that shit is it comes from people who actually are elites. David Brooks? I don’t think he’d last a day in what he calls “Real America.” The late WFB had a Transatlantic accent. Trump? That man isn’t the common American.

I’ll grant you Brooks and Buckley, but Trump’s proud ignorance, hateful xenophobia and bully-boy attitude transcend socioeconomic class.

True but I’m talking about the way the man has lived. My grandfather was a member of the working class. I’ve seen where he grew up. A brat like Trump would have lost it. Grandpa always told us about how he would get fruit for Christmas. Trump loves talking about how his Daddy gave him a million dollar loan and this was before Nolan Ryan became the first baseball player to receive a million dollar salary.

New story that is old:

Northwestern College president apologizes for equating sexual assaults with gay relationships

Note what he really is “apologizing” for:

[…]

Greg Christy, president of Northwestern College in Orange City since 2008, had written that “pornography, premarital sex, adultery, sexual assault, the objectification of women, and same-sex activity all exemplify the brokenness of sexual desire and expression.”

[…]

“In no way was I intending whatsoever to equate that sexual assault was in any way, shape or form equal to or the same as any of the other items that were listed,” Christy said in an interview with the Des Moines Register on Tuesday. “I was just (trying) to say that just like same-sex activity is inappropriate, so is premarital sex, according to scripture.

[…]

Actually, he was intending to equate assault with the other items, which is why it was part of the laundry list of sins.

Everything for the media folds back into their “economic anxiety” narrative, the idea that Trumpers are “good people” inside who are saying racist or stupid things because “they don’t know any better.” It was why the media was heaping so much love on the revival of Rosanne, because it allowed them to engage in this fantasy where you could be an unrepentant racist, but so long as you managed to be nice to others then society should accept you. So what if it was perpetuating the “one of the good ones” myths or presenting noxious bigotry as “a difference of opinion,” damnit, we were supposed to be accepting of Trumpers because they’re really “Good Americans…er, People.”

I really liked Glory, but I’d be going: “Why is Matthew Broderick doing this atrocious imitation of a southern accent?”

I later realized, up until the Civil War, Southern was the prestige dialect in this country, and Gould would have affected it, because as a Back Bay Boston blueblood, he sure wouldn’t want to sound like some Down-East lobsterman. So that was just a little detail, but added to the verisimilitude.

No argument with that. Great supporting cast too not just Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman but also Andre Braughner, Cary Elwes, others.

I look at the apology as a means by which the person tries to save face for him/herself—-it’s self-serving and provides no evidence that s/he has learned anything and won’t repeat the behavior in the future. What’s notable about this new spin — that Democrats are to blame for the policy change — isn’t just that it’s flatly false on its face. It’s also that, by making this claim, Trump and the White House are basically admitting that their own policy is a moral abomination

re: #145 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

I really liked Glory, but I’d be going: “Why is Matthew Broderick doing this atrocious imitation of a southern accent?”

I later realized, up until the Civil War, Southern was the prestige dialect in this country, and Gould would have affected it, because as a Back Bay Boston blueblood, he sure wouldn’t want to sound like some Down-East lobsterman. So that was just a little detail, but added to the verisimilitude.

Never thought about that. What I like about Glory is that it’s not a glamorous depiction of war. In fact nearly every major character dies. And it shows in fact how little regard and respect the CSA had for black people as people. One reason why I hate the Lee mythos is it ignores that Lee would put into slavery ALL captured African-American soldiers. It didn’t matter if they had been previously freeman like the character of Thomas in the movie or not, they were all seen as people that could be enslaved. And then there’s Fort Pillow under Klan founder, Forrest but I digress. I’m a proud second great grandson of a Union vet.

You can’t get everything right. The film got more right than it didn’t and I’m sure many of the same types of people who complain about that are the same who think Braveheart is one of the most historical epics ever. All the Scots I’ve ever talked to can’t stand it because they feel it makes a mockery of their country’s struggle for independence. It’s an entertaining movie but I would never say “Hey Braveheart’s how 14th century Scotland really was!”

“If you’re 65 years old and you have spent your entire adult life in media, there is precious little room for vicious racism to be attributed to a need for learning and change, and an apology is not a magic incantation that substitutes for responsibility.”

After someone has made a racist comment and later attempts to apologize, I reject the apology because I think that if the individual didn’t think and really believe racist things, s/he would never give voice to them, especially not in a public setting like social media. I look at the apology as a means by which the person tries to save face for him/herself—-it’s self-serving and provides no evidence that s/he has learned anything and won’t repeat the behavior in the future. There is no “get out of jail free card” with me when it comes to one human referring to another as a simian.

And then there’s the fact that she apologized for her tweet being ‘in bad taste’. No that it was vile racism, but it was in bad taste.

I would bet Mr. Mueller is also looking at White House interactions with Devin Nunes in a similar light.

One of the guest prosecutor types on MSNBC stated that people should not weigh the order of who Mueller is interviewing and why some names are missing so far, etc.

They said it is all about the game plan and playing people off one another, building assumptions and then catching others off-guard.

But overall, the later folks are probably in deeper trouble as the case is building on them and others have talked to put them on the spot.

Another thing to consider is Mueller wants to know as much about someone he can before asking question one. So, that all needs to cook too.

Open Letter to Congress; Regarding Blackmail from the Executive Branch

Dear Members of Congress:

I write this letter urging you to stop the dictatorship initiated in the Executive Branch. The White House under Obama has made direct attacks against the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th amendments to the Constitution. These acts include the attack on whistleblowers, contriving false flag terror attacks to remove the 2nd amendment (Boston Marathon; case in point), NSA Spying Scandal, and murdering innocent people with drones. Obama has shown utter contempt for the Constitution and the Rule of Law, however it is the cowardice of Congress that makes these things possible.

The Patriot was even worse than Braveheart. I mean as a good Irish-Catholic American boy, I’ve got no love for what the British have done to their colonies over the century but taking a page from the SS playbook. And man did I hate how the screenplay sanitized slavery, I think I heard even Gibson didn’t think much of that, remember he didn’t direct this one like he did with Braveheart.

There was a comparison in the origin stories of Horus and Jesus. This is an actual field of study for religious scholars, as the stories are quite similar.

‘Titanic’ night sky adjusted after Neil deGrasse Tyson criticized James Cameron

“Neil deGrasse Tyson sent me quite a snarky e-mail saying that, at that time of year, in that position in the Atlantic in 1912, when Rose (Kate Winslet) is lying on the piece of driftwood and staring up at the stars, that is not the star field she would have seen,” Cameron told to Discovery.

“And with my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have put the right star field in. So I said ‘All right, send me the right stars for that exact time and I’ll put it in the movie.’ “

That was Neil deGrasse Tyson.

For the updated 3D version of the movie they were in the correct places.

That error was something that could have been avoided.

That’s the job my sister does in Hollywood with the military consulting firm she works for. They consult with scriptwriters and actors and directors and set managers and such to ensure that military equipment, hardware, and personnel are accurately depicted. “That’s an M-4 machine gun. You can’t have that in a WW2 movie.” “The ribbons on that uniform are not in the correct sequence.”

Oh, I’d like to have a job doing that. I’d be good at it and there are always more idiots in Hollywierd that need help.

Yeah but the star position. Come on, I like Neil too but there’s a big difference between getting the star position right and getting the era of weapons right for a film. That said, it was neat that Cameron changed the night of the sky for the 3D version.

It was nit picking and Cameron did say that Neil told him that somewhat snarkily.

Cool on Cameron fixing the sky he should have added another star and claim it burned out a few months after the ship sank.

The point was attention to detail. For a multi-million dollar film such as that, and the supposed effort that went into getting details correct (such as the china used in the dining room), with much of the film done in after-dark settings it was a trivial thing to check.

I saw the movie in the theatre when it came out and the constellations jumped out at me as wrong. I guess different people get nitpicky over different things.

And will promptly ignore the “best” will cost around $1 billion or more to build, because we need to have the security setbacks and build the embassy compound so that it is defended against terror attacks.

They’re going to stand by the excuse that the cost of opening the “new” embassy was cheap, while the final cost of all the “upgrades” and “refurbishments” will be buried in the ledger down next to the cost of toilet paper for the White House.

Ha! Nah Grandpa was a NCO. He told us that the higher ups said he could have been an officer if he had stayed put but he just wanted to go home. After hearing about those Korean winters, I don’t blame him.

My father was offered a recommendation to OCS early in his career by the Cpt of the squadron he was assigned to as a mech. He regularly flew backseat when they were testing motors he’d worked on and he’d become so experienced that pilots in the squadron actually felt comfortable letting him take the controls for short periods.

His response after a long think about it was to turn down the offer, as he wanted to work with his hands, not do paperwork all the time.

Which is really why the media is fretting so much over her being shit-canned: They held up her show as some icon of “True Americana,” the idea that Barr was an icon of the “economically anxious” crowd that supported Trump: People with “strong opinions” that were not “politically correct” but who we should accept and be friends with because they’re “good people.”

Now they’re stuck with two choices and, rather than admitting that Trumpers like Barr will never change and are taking these opportunities as validation of their beliefs, they’re doubling down on the whole “Stop being so mean to these people, that’s how Trump won!”

ICYMI: Adam Schiff calls on voters to remove congressmen who aid Trump in his crimes:

By Karoun Demirjian
May 27
Email the author
The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Sunday called on voters to “throw the bums out” of Congress whom he has accused of trying to help President Trump undermine the special counsel’s Russia probe.

“The only thing that makes this possible is a Congress that is complicit,” Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) said on ABC News’s “This Week,” naming several conservative leaders in the Republican Party and accusing “a weak” Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) of refusing to “stand up for the independence of the Justice Department.”

“As long as there’s a majority in Congress that is willing to do this president’s will and as long as we have a deeply unethical president, there’s only one remedy,” Schiff said.

Also, how many companies went down in the dot-com bubble?

$5 trillion was wiped off market capitlaisation of companies in the bursting of that bubble. Only about 48% of such companies survived.

Amazon survived (at a lower valuation) because it had an actual service that it was marketing. Cryptocurrency markets nothing except the ability to hide your money from the tax collector.

Most of these projects are, like she says, stupid. Many try to use blockchains to fix problems that don’t exist, or that could be fixed in better ways. The utility of being able to send funds across borders instantaneously, OTOH, is a major advantage. You can perhaps understand why I believe so. Arranging bank transfers from China to the USA is a major hassle, involves lots of paperwork and time, and is expensive, relative to the amounts I typically send. Bitcoin is secure and has not been hacked (yet), so as long as there are ways to convert Chinese yuan to Bitcoin and then Bitcoin to USD, I will continue to use it.

Only a fraction of crypto is used for illegal purposes. Even the G20 wonks have said this. Stop repeating something that is not true.

He relied heavily on having been a SEAL and on having ”family values,” so he won the election. I read an article about an hour ago that stated that quite a few in Missouri are upset that Greitens resigned. These are the same persons that voted for the Yam. The worst thing in all of space travel may be pooping

Let’s start with the basics of the International Space Station’s toilet.

Said toilet was installed on the American side of the ISS in 2008. A curtain was added shortly afterward. Then it flooded.

Fortunately, there’s a second toilet on the Russian side, though it sometimes breaks, too, leaving the astronauts to go inside their shuttles or, as a last resort, to use what is euphemistically called an “Apollo bag.”

Fair enough on the monetary transfers from one country to another. By the way, does China consider such transactions legal? I don’t know.

“Only a fraction of crypto is used for illegal purposes.” Same goes for AR-15s.

I’m back.

China has made it more difficult to buy cryptocurrencies, but have not made it illegal. But you cannot use Bitcoin or whatever to buy stuff within China. Only the yuan is legal tender.
