Billboard did not have it’s Top Singles Chart (based on record sales) until July 1940. I do not know what the top single was for my father; for my mother it was Tommy Dorsey’s “I’ll Never Smile Again.” (She was born the week Billboard created the chart.)

People who shouted Trump that Bitch. Mad that a comedian called the President’s crooked daughter a c-word. Honestly, I’m a little annoyed she did it too but for a real reason. It distracts from the main point of what she was saying that Ivanka tries to act humane and does NOTHING about her father’s awful immigration policy. She’s fine with being involved when it comes to enriching her wallet but not acutally helping people who aren’t her.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant denomination in the USA. In their upcoming convention, Mr. Patterson is still listed as a speaker at the convention. It will be interesting to see if they bounce him out of that.

There’s lots of handwringing over “no true Christians” but from my outside view that’s tough for me to swallow in combination with “largest Protestant denomination.”

There already has been. After Patterson and Pressler became the kingpins of the SBC, several churches split off, created a couple of new denominations.

Now it seems likely that if the tide is turning towards the “reformed” theologies (which Mohler is courting), that some of the anti-Calvinists may break off on theological grounds.

And it is pretty clear to me that here is no small revolt among the young against the old patriarchy in the SBC.

Times are a changing.

I can only hope that when Trump finally falls, he’ll take a lot of his religious sycophants down with him.

I moved on her like a bitch. But I couldn’t get there. And she was married. Then all of a sudden I see her, she’s now got the big phony tits and everything. She’s totally changed her look.

— —

Trump: Yeah, that’s her. With the gold. I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.

Bush: Whatever you want.

Trump: Grab ‘em by the pussy. You can do anything.

Spare me Chris Cillizza’s outrage.

Rounding out the last thread,

Billboard did not have it’s Top Singles Chart (based on record sales) until July 1940. I do not know what the top single was for my father; for my mother it was Tommy Dorsey’s “I’ll Never Smile Again.” (She was born the week Billboard created the chart.)

Late to the birthday song party for me on both my birthday and when I was 14.

In ‘54 it was Sh-Boom by the Crew Cuts.

In ‘68 it was People Got to Be Free - The Young Rascals.

I always like The Rascals.

My problem is that calling her it distracts from what her actual point is and that’s that Ivanka pretends to be this champion of women and girls and she’s been silent as hell about the kids being deported.

They would do it regardless of what Ms. Bee said about Ivanka.

I think the right’s outrage is phony and every liberal in the media should point that out but at the same time, I’m annoyed that the narrative is Samantha Bee called Ivanka that word rather than Samantha Bee called out the President’s daughter who is very active in his administration for doing nothing about chlidren separated from their parents at the border. I agree, conservatives were going to bitch up a storm regardless of what was said or not said but I think you can’t deny the discussion was forced. I don’t think Samantha did for publicity. She’s a mother an immigrant herself. She’s rightfully horrified by Trump’s terrible immigration’s policies and Ivanka’s charade. I don’t think she should be ruined over it but at the same time, I do think it was a fuck up. I’m not even say suspend her or that she necessarily needed to apologize.

The reason I’m nervous about it is because for used trucks, the 25% ‘chicken tax’ is still applied on them regardless of them being 25 years or older, whereas vehicles are subjected to a mere duty of 2.5%.

If the ‘chicken tax’ can be applied unilaterally on used 25+ year old pickups, then it’s not out of the ordinary for vehicles to be applied with the same tariff as well.

It’s making me angry and nervous about future prospects.

You’re saying it better than me. It just sucks because I really do think Samantha was speaking from a place of frustration and that makes it as you said above a different animal than Roseanne’s cheap attacks on Valerie Jarrett. But you’re right. It’s become about that word rather than Ivanka loves taking an active position in the administration when it benefits HER BOTTOM LINE but could care less if it’s other people being negatively impacted. Feckless enabler would have worked just as well but as I said, it’s an understandably emotional issue for Bee as both a mother and immigrant. I don’t think she needed to apologize necessarily but at the same time, I’m genuinely annoyed that the bulk of the conversation wherever is going to be on the word rather than the sentiment behind the words.

They have FOX News, hate talk radio, and hate Christian radio. They have an entire industry outside that creating grievances. Unless Samantha Bee was worshiping Ivanka Trump, they would create their grievances.

‘mouse, do you notice what is not in your list?

An outright vulgarity.

I understand your point, hell, I understand everyone making their points here.

And I love Ms. Bee!

But she really should not have used that vulgarity. That is the difference.

Dammit. Trump has turned this whole thing into his way of doing things. He can get away with murder. He was right when he said he could go out on 5th Avenue and shoot someone.

As I’ve heard people say elsewhere, Cheeto Benito is pardoning people who mirror his own crimes:

1) Contempt of court and civil rights violations (Sheriff Joe)
2) Obstruction of Justice (Scooter Libby)
3) Campaign finance violations (Douche D’Souza)
4) Insider trading and perjury (Martha Stewart)
5) Corruption up the wazoo (Blagojevich)

You know, I never thought about that. That’s a damn good observation.

Another example of the conservative grievance machine being able to gin up grievance about anything. And how much calling Bush “a monkey” was actually going on? I don’t recall it (but the plural of anecdote is not evidence). I heard him called Dubya.

There is absolutely nothing a person can say disparaging a conservative or his position that the outrage machine cannot make into a thing. Rosanne Barr’s horrific tweet has been spun for a couple days now as a “not as bad” or “just as bad” or “liberal snowflakes” to just about anything else.

Oh. There were plenty of times Bush was called Chimpy. But it’s frigging different. And besides I thought conservatives hated moral relativism. That is if they think it was wrong to call Bush a chimp, they should think it’s wrong for Roseanne to call Jarrett an ape but they’re dishonest hacks.

I can’t remember a far-right talent being fired the day prior before SNL aired that. It’s always different when the far-right is looking for a scalp to nail to the wall, because then any “transgression” becomes totally “unacceptable.”

They tried to do it with Bill Maher but only wound up looking like idiots for various reasons. So it’s true that Samantha Bee inadvertently gave them the best gift they could’ve hoped for. I still don’t think they’ would have been able to get any traction outside of the trumpchump base had Bee used different words (e.g. feckless enabler, complicit fake, etc)

White person calling black person an ape = a racist insult

Woman calling woman a c**t ≠ a sexist insult

They only heard the word. Context doesn’t matter. Also, everyone is just waiting to be outraged and to pounce. The internet sure doesn’t help because if anything can make mountains out of mole hills in record time…the ‘net is it.

I’m not talking about the right here. I’m talking about the entire media. A to D though. I just think it’s unfortunate that this is what’s going to happen. I do agree with you that nothing more than a thorough tongue bathing of Princess Ivanka by Samantha would have ticked them off but I think you’re missing my overall point that she made their narrative about what she called Ivanka much easier than if she had simply called Ivanka out. I don’t give a fuck what she called Ivanka. Ivanka’s a criminal whose father has said far worse things about political opponents while she sat in her high crown and said nothing and just kissed her gross father’s ass.

I agree with you completely. I am not a fan of this particular language; it just distracts from the point.

Exactly. Instead of talking about kids estranged from their parents, we’re talking about the c word. Now I really don’t think Bee meant for it be that way but it’s whats going to happen and you know what, that sucks.

re: #145 HappyWarrior

You’re saying it better than me. It just sucks because I really do think Samantha was speaking from a place of frustration and that makes it as you said above a different animal than Roseanne’s cheap attacks on Valerie Jarrett. But you’re right. It’s become about that word rather than Ivanka loves taking an active position in the administration when it benefits HER BOTTOM LINE but could care less if it’s other people being negatively impacted. Feckless enabler would have worked just as well but as I said, it’s an understandably emotional issue for Bee as both a mother and immigrant. I don’t think she needed to apologize necessarily but at the same time, I’m genuinely annoyed that the bulk of the conversation wherever is going to be on the word rather than the sentiment behind the words.

these repetitive faux-rages are frustrasting
and we may be coming to a do you want to be right or do you want to win kind of calculus
because i do believe our positions are right
and it’s also clear that we dont win the arguments

- repeated and blatant racism is not comparable to offensive words, even when those offensive words are targeted at an individual or even a group
- Bee used language some people find offensive, even in a comedic setting.
- Barr is/was outright racist, not even in a comedic setting. Her employer wouldn’t have it.
Michael Richards was outright racist in a comedic setting. i dont recall if he was even trying to be funny at that moment. how did it work out for him?

Sigh…

So they literally managed to ‘both sides same thing’ Sam Bee’s segment toward Roseanne’s outbursts and the millions of other vile epithets GOP figures hurl every day, and now we might be on the brink of her losing her job because context doesn’t matter anymore, and we’re constantly dancing on the head of the GOP’s pin consistently and forever thanks to feckless enabling?

After everything else today? I’m fucking done. Fuck it.

I’m tuning out before I strangle a fucking cat or something. Maybe I can blame that on Ambien and get taken seriously.

This is why I’ve grown accustomed to rolling my eyes when people ascribe to Trump some grand strategy for his actions. The man operates on a totally instinctual level, he doesn’t have the mental bandwidth for the sort of scheming that is often ascribed to his actions. To think that his decision to pardon D’ouchebag is anything but a response to something he saw on FNC is to convey upon him a level of intellect he has proven not to possess in the slightest.

Trump operates on a street level. He is a street corner con man. They are smart in their own way and they take advantage of people. The goal in for them to take a mark for everything they can. That is Trump’s goal.

re: #147 Targetpractice

My personal belief is that persons like Bee and others who subject to such “outrage” should respond to such by pointing out that this the very environment that the media promoted by talking up how awesome Trump is for being “anti-PC” and “telling it like it is.” That if their first instinct is to give mealy-mouthed excuses for such behavior from Roseanne Barr, then they have room to get “outraged” over the use of the word “****.” As I said upthread, the Cillizzas in the media already decided they’re prepared to condone this shit, they’re just arguing now that they be the gatekeepers over where the bar rests.

That’s the thing, “war is not nice,” as you said upthread. It is rather appropriate that we’re having this discussion in the lead-up to the centennial of the end of WWI, as it also marked the end of the idea of “civilized war.” For centuries prior, the “civilized” world conned themselves into believing that no matter how bloody a war got, rules would still be adhered to like not targeting officers and giving quarter no matter the circumstances. All that died in the mud of No Man’s Land and war has never been the same since.

Trump’s presidency could also be seen as to mark the end of “civilized” politics as we know them, when the fight for America’s soul ceased being a polite exchange of ideas and became a vulgar brawl.

(cut) Michael Richards was outright racist in a comedic setting. i dont recall if he was even trying to be funny at that moment. how did it work out for him?

Subsequently due to significant media coverage of the event he announced his retirement from stand-up early in 2007. He appeared as himself in the seventh season of Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2009, acting alongside his fellow cast members for the first time since Seinfeld’s finale, as well as lampooning his incident at the Laugh Factory. In 2013, Richards returned to television when he played the role of Frank in the sitcom Kirstie. en.wikipedia.org

He’s not hurting.
