Yet Another Exceptional NPR Tiny Desk Concert: The Band’s Visit

May 21, 2018 | Josh Rogosin — After nearly 800 Tiny Desk concerts, The Band’s Visit is the first Broadway musical ever to play the series.

The crew from the show, which opened last November at the Ethel Barrymore Theater, descended on NPR at 8:30 a.m. — seven musicians, five actors, a wardrobe department, a make-up artist, a publicist, a music director, the composer and even a vlogger. We started early so they could hustle back to Manhattan for a 7 p.m. curtain.

The story of The Band’s Visit, composer David Yazbek told the Tiny Desk audience, “is about hope and faith and silence and music.” It tells the tale of Egyptian musicians stranded in a small Israeli village. The townspeople have no choice but to take them in. Eventually, the love of music allows the characters to see past their differences and form an unlikely bond in a single night. The musical was adapted from the 2007 film and has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards.

From the first note strummed on the oud, Yazbek’s nominated score transports the Tiny Desk to the Middle East with traditional instrumentation and melodies, and weaves in beautiful theatrical ballads.

Among the cast are Tony Shalhoub (known for his TV roles in Monk and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Broadway veteran Katrina Lenk (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Once and Indecent). They both have been nominated for their lead performances.

Although it’s a Broadway smash hit, it lacks the opulent, bring-down-the-house song and dance numbers. It’s a more intimate show with some universal messages that fit the up, close and personal space of the Tiny Desk.

The Band’s Visit insists that it’s OK, even essential, to get “stuck” with strangers who have different perspectives. It serves as a poignant reminder that our common connection to music can rise above the noise of intolerance.

Yazbek’s poem Itgara’a, translated here from Arabic and sung a cappella by Tony Shalhoub, sums up the show’s philosophy:

When you drink, drink deeply.

Drink deeply of the moonlight

drink deeply of the dark

of the loneliness

of the joy.

You will never drain the moonlight

you can never end the dark.

In your eyes, the flash of joy

in your mouth, the sweet shock of honey.

You are the joy

you are the loneliness.

Drink deep.

Patriarchal preachers still coming out of the woodwork for Paige Patterson. Trumpers most of them, of course.

Fortunately, there are others who are fighting back against them.

True. Not GOP, but just like GOP on every issue. Except the pedo, that’s not on the GOP’s platform.

It’s the Libertarians who seem to have a problem with that sort of thing, along with civil rights in general. A good chunk of their party are okay with it, because they see everything through the “private property” lens and coveture and slavery are aspects of private property.

I skipped most of season 2 of The Expanse because the first episode just seemed too slow for me.

However, picking up the last couple of episodes of season 3, it appears the story is moving nicely to some sort of climax.

Glad Amazon picked up a final season to close out the story. I wonder what the budget will be though for production.

This whole day has been a pain in the butt from going to the gym this morning to dealing with the Trump fan at work…

I deeply appreciate everyone who had my back this morning. That’s how we will survive the turd in the White House.

I’m at the point now where I’ve had it with RepubliKKKlans and I’m not going to take any more #2 from them. That includes my brainwashed insane family members who worship the ground Trump walks on. I’m not taking any more of their insults and now they’re going to receive Harlan Ellison style Tongue Fu from me. One MAGA thought he could shoot his mouth off on the train coming home. He wound up with ears redder than Prince’s Hot Chicken. And I appreciated the applause from the folks in the train…

I haven’t done a lot of commenting on the meat of what happened politically, today, but I closely watched the conversation.

My takes:

What Sam Bee called Ivanka can’t be viewed through the lens of what other countries think of the word. Here in the US, it is viewed as the female equivalent of calling a black person a n******. A c*** in the US is a road whore, a scag, a crack addict giving $5 blow jobs for drugs, or, in TrumpWorld, Hillary Clinton.

Let that sink in for a minute.

The fact that Ivanka faffs about about family and blah blah blah, while not busting her dad’s chops for what he is doing to families seeking asylum in this country is a really, really valid criticism. It exposes her as suffering from extraordinary white privilege bias, at best, or just depraved indifference at worst. She deserves to be pilloried.

But *that* word should never have been uttered, and I am not talking about “feckless”. That’s a good word, because it’s accurate.

I don’t care if it’s a man or a woman who describes another woman using it. I don’t care if it’s a satirical comedy show. That word is a trigger in this country. You use it to describe a road whore, a scag, a crack addict giving $5 blow jobs for drugs, or, in TrumpWorld, Hillary Clinton.

It was a major blunder by Bee and her staff. You just cannot, cannot, use that word to cavalierly describe the daughter of a sitting President, no matter how shallow that daughter is, or how vile the President is. It was air-dropping machine gun ammo into the enemy lines. Free Gift!

It destroyed the very valid point that Bee was trying to highlight, that Drumpf’s policies toward asylum seekers was ripping families asunder was causing horrific pain and inhuman suffering to people who just didn’t want to watch their children get slaughtered.

The chance that there will be a discussion on the White House support for this horrible piece of public policy is now gone. And that is a fucking tragedy, and was entirely preventable.

Google image search also matches the image to a Chainsmokers video (a screen shot from the video maybe)? I would try to search for it but the strobing of the video makes it impossible for me to watch.

I don’t think there is any doubt now that the right’s obsession with ugly fantasies like Pizzagate and Q-Anon is, in fact, projection and misdirection for their own massive pedophile and pervert problem. They keep making lurid accusations but it’s their people who keep getting arrested or otherwise exposed. The popularity and persistence of these fantasies would suggest that some level of real knowledge of the problem is also quite widespread on the right. In this respect it would be similar to the Catholic pedophile scandals but on a much larger scale.

Two Texas teens are #1 and #2 at the conclusion of the National Spelling Bee. Will they be invited to the White House?

Well, there’s this:

[Karthik] Nemmani continued a longtime trend by becoming the 14th champion or co-champion of South Asian descent the bee has had in 11 consecutive years.

Second place went to Naysa Modi, also of South Asian descent.

[Details at the WaPo washingtonpost.com]

Now, maybe Trump is all down with South Asian brown people. After all, he just pardoned Dinesh D’Hoohoo. But I really don’t expect he’s going to invite two smart kids of any ethnic persuasion to meet with him.

Personally, I’d give it 8/10. One track - to me, at least - fell just a little flat, but this new album is a brilliant tribute/throwback to arena rock from the 1970s and 80’s.

This is……..interesting (in a horrific sort of way):

A Transavia flight to the Spanish island of Gran Canaria was forced to make an emergency landing in Portugal when several passengers reportedly became ill by the “unbearable” smell of an “unwashed” man onboard.

The male passenger allegedly smelled so bad that others on the flight began fainting and vomiting once the plane took off from Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands.

One Belgian passenger, Piet van Haut, told Express the man smelled like he had not bathed in “several weeks.”

“It was like he hadn’t washed himself for several weeks. Several passengers got sick and had to puke,” van Haut said.

According to the publication, airline crew members tried to keep the man contained in the airplane bathroom while the pilot diverted the flight.

The man was taken off the plane and placed on a bus by medical personnel.

The plane landed in Faro in Portugal where the man was removed from the Boeing 737 and placed on a bus by medical personnel.

Hmmm………..anyone know where Ted Nugent is?

McCain made a vile joke about Chelsea Clinton in 1998 and Rush Limbaugh insulted her back in 1993. The true obscenity is mocking children — and even adults — for their physical appearance.

GOT fans (and Samantha Bee may watch the show) are familiar with the “C” word. The Hound has used it on several occasions but never in reference to a woman, always to insult a man. Samantha should have known better.

Chelsea seems to be a charming woman; I wonder if she has political ambitions for her future,

There’s a potential loophole that was identified that the state legislature needs to close to make sure that a state case on those federal type charges can hold and not get wiped out due to the federal pardon. The State AG is on that.

The sheer volume of Trump scandals can seem difficult to keep track of.

There’s the ongoing special-counsel investigation into whether the Trump campaign aided a Russian campaign to aid Trump’s candidacy and defeat his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton; there’s the associated inquiry into whether the president obstructed justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey, whom he had asked not to investigate his former national-security adviser; there are the president’s hush-money payments to women with whom he allegedly had extramarital affairs, made through his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and facilitated by corporate cash paid to influence the White House; there is his ongoing effort to interfere with the Russia inquiry and politicize federal law enforcement; there are the foreign governments that seem to be utilizing the president’s properties as vehicles for influencing administration policy; there’s the emerging evidence that Trump campaign officials sought aid not only from Russia, but from other foreign countries, which may have affected Trump’s foreign policy; there are the ongoing revelations of the president’s Cabinet officials’ misusing taxpayer funds; there is the accumulating evidence that administration decisions are made at the behest of private industry, in particular those in which Republican donors have significant interests.

The preceding wall of text may appear to some as an abridged list of the Trump administration’s scandals, but this is an illusion created by the perception that these are all separate affairs. Viewed as such, the various Trump scandals can seem multifarious and overpowering, and difficult to fathom.

There are not many Trump scandals. There is one Trump scandal. Singular: the corruption of the American government by the president and his associates, who are using their official power for personal and financial gain rather than for the welfare of the American people, and their attempts to shield that corruption from political consequences, public scrutiny, or legal accountability…..

re: #93 Barefoot Grin

Everything is a facet of the main scandal: Trump’s corrupt and criminal acts.

Trump runs a criminal syndicate, and they’re busy undermining the rule of law to further their criminal enterprise. They used Russia to advance their business interests. They reached out to foreign powers to do so. They used undeclared foreign agents to do so. They lied to investigators. They obstructed justice to do so.

Etc.

In many respects, it’s how we get “collusion” is what Trump is doing, and Trump claiming that collusion isn’t a crime. Technically collusion isn’t a federal crime, but it’s the umbrella term for every criminal act Trump is doing, has done, or will do (because invariably he is furthering his criminal enterprise with additional criminal acts).

If he pardons people, doesn’t that mean that Mueller can force them to testify because they can no longer invoke their 5th Amendment privileges? OTOH, Trump will pardon them again for any perjury they may commit. Samantha should have applied the C word to him. It’s really more appropriate than against Ivanka.

Yeah that’s true. Honestly I don’t know his legal strategy here. It’s all so bizarre.

re: #82 HappyWarrior

It’s also why we need to get rid of Trump and Pence. Trump is definitely going to pardon everyone in the Russian investigation right down to the coffee boy.

well said from electoral-vote.com:

Trump is using it in a way that the Founding Parents never intended. The original idea was to give the president the power to right wrongs when the justice system failed. For example, if evidence later surfaced proving that an innocent person had been imprisoned, the president could free that person. It was never intended to let a supporter of your party off the hook after having pleaded guilty to a political crime (in D’Souza’s case, contributing too much money to a Republican senatorial candidate). Nor was it intended as a means of rallying political support (it’s not a coincidence that Trump pardons people one at a time, and makes a big show of doing it). The President suggested that his next beneficiaries might be Rod Blagojevich and Martha Stewart, both of whom just happen to be former “The Apprentice” contestants.

With the D’Souza pardon (and the others that may come down the pike), Trump is (once again) saying that the rule of law doesn’t apply to his friends and supporters.

i should bold, underline and italic the whole thing
oh, and caps, it should all be in caps

we’re stuck with this abuse because the ‘founding fathers’ didnt write down and account for every eventuality 200+ years later?

Morning!

Just wanted to drop in and say hi. Too bummed out by all the crap yesterday with Sam Bee, and then watching a basketball game that even Golden State fans on ESPN are saying the Cavs were jobbed by the refs and I just feel down. It shouldn’t even have come down to JR Smith’s brainfart.

Some days…suck.

You know, I watched that game to escape the insanity of our politics and then a game turns like that. Call it sour grapes…but the Warriors fans that know the game know the truth.

Have a good one. I gotta recharge my batteries.

And oh yeah…Trump and his family suck!

Arrgh…Megyn Kelly on my TV already bitching about Bee. Turn that shit off. Don’t need to hear it. Not today.

Trump’s getting job growth, but it’s at a far slower pace than Obama.

In fact, the economy isn’t growing at the pace Trump and GOP claimed would result from the tax scam.

As the economy isn’t growing at their fantasy prediction, that means the debt is growing even faster than anticipated by everyone but the GOP.

Guess who pays: not the millionaires like Trump, but everyone else who’ll see the GOP look to gut the safety net to balance the books on their backs.

re: #14 austin_blue

Not me. When I use the word, it’s only towards men, and I’m saying it with my best impression of a BBC-styled underworld gangland East London accent. It’s what I say to a guy that I’m about to drop into the tank to be eaten by the crabs.

HappyWarrior  Jun 1, 2018 • 6:11:50am

Trump can only have the foundation that Obama laid for him for so long. What pisses me off is the economy was doing quite well in the Obama years and Trump got elected on pardon the pun Trumped up lies about state of the economy. It wasn’t standard fare lies either. It was claiming that we were pretty much in the Great Depression. And now I see he’s intervening on behalf of the Coal Industry. But remember how Solyandra was the scandal of the century. //

I like watching Samantha Bee, and my son likes it as well. He’s a lot more informed because of her. But the people who are caught up in cuntgate weren’t going to talk about the issue she raises. And my son wouldn’t have noticed the use of the word if it hadn’t been pointed out. Charles, when he posted a video about the entire episode, posted one about Guiliani, not about asylum seekers.

Edited to clarify.

Failure to launch prodigal 30 year old son Michael Rotondo has left the building! Too bad the “kid” doesn’t know enough to be embarassed.

Camillus, NY — Thirty-year-old Michael Rotondo left his parents’ house for the last time around 9:30 a.m. today, 2 1/2 hours before his court-ordered eviction deadline.

Rotondo has expressed relief at leaving his parents’ Camillus house, despite trying in court to buy himself six more months at home. An Onondaga County Supreme Court Justice ordered him out by noon today.

But — like with everything in this saga — Rotondo’s departure came with drama, this time involving the police.

Rotondo said he called the cops because he believed his son’s Legos were in the basement and his dad — who is evicting him — wouldn’t let him look for them. Instead, the father offered to look for specific items and, if he found them, bring them out.

Rotondo said that wasn’t good enough and called police. While the police were there, the Legos were located and there was no further incident.

I own a husky-lab mix, gorgeous smart dog, but definitely prey driven.

A dog owner from Utah has been cited with nearly 30 misdemeanor counts after police say her pet husky went on a killing spree in Tooele that left more than two dozen animals dead.

Trip Kiss, who runs a petting zoo, KissMade, out of his home catering to children with special needs, on Monday morning heard the motion sensors in his yard go off.

When he looked at the surveillance video, he saw a black-and-white dog running around his property and attacking his animals, including chickens, ducks and rabbits.

He was chewing our goose that was at the back end there, he dug out the rabbits in their enclosure,’ Kiss told Fox 13.

The footage captured the dog, a four-year-old husky named Nikita, fleeing the scene with a pair of rabbits in its maw.

When Kiss went to examine the animal enclosure, he learned that the four-legged bandit had slaughtered a pair of ducks, two bunnies, five chickens, a turkey and their pet goose, Rex.

My pup can’t catch and won’t come, but he is loved.

Villaraigosa in the fight of his political life as primary election for California governor nears

Antonio Villaraigosa, whose meteoric rise in California politics was viewed as the embodiment of burgeoning Latino political power, is now having to defend his own turf in the city he once led in hopes of advancing in next week’s gubernatorial primary.

Multiple polls, including one released Thursday by UC Berkeley, show GOP businessman John Cox edging out the former Los Angeles mayor for second place in the June 5 primary. In California’s primary system, the top two vote-getters move on to the general election, regardless of party.

We don’t know that; no-one thought Trump would be the GOP nominee. But Sanders could do the spoiler thing again. If Trump holds his 46% of the vote, then it only takes a small percentage of the center-left vote either not showing up or voting for fringe candidates to give him an opening to slither through like he did in 2016.

Here’s my reasoning, and it’s dependent on a real election being conducted in a normal manner, so…who knows.

tRump got 62,000,000 votes. His cult is rabid, but they’re not all of those. He certainly hasn’t gained any support. I don’t know if those “protest” vote stories were baloney or what, but I don’t see how he breaks 60,000,000 now.

Hillary Clinton, a woman—and sorry, but it matters that she was a woman—who has been on the receiving end of 35 fucking years of nonstop vilification, got 65,000,000 votes. Barack Hussein Obama, a black man with Arabic first and middle names, got 67,000,000 votes 10 years ago, and everyone who voted for him—and others besides—are going to be exceptionally motivated.

I don’t see how tRump can pull it out in a normal election. It’s got to be pretty close for the Electoral jiggery-pokery to flip it.

Plus more candidates means Bernie gets more scrutiny and Bernie doesn’t have that new car smell he used to have and I think you will see Bernie attacked from the left not just on guns but also immigration for example as well.

I don’t see hoe tRump can pull it out in a normal election. It’s got to be pretty close for the Electoral jiggery-pokery to flip it.

Agreed.

Just remember that a lot can happen over the next two years. If the economic recovery continues, which it could, that will help Trump, if Mueller’s investigation peters out, if the Democrats aren’t unified again, Trump could win with a minority of the vote as he did in 2016.

He probably won’t even get out of the primaries, IMO. There’s a ton of examples of him being all about Bernie and not the Democratic party, and any smart Democrat running against him will readily use it (again IMO).

Guns have become a bigger issue for Democratic primary voters too since 2016. Bernie’s going to have to explain why he talks about corporate accountability but has voted to deny gun companies that same accountability, why he thought it was a good idea to vote to allow guns on Amtrak trains, etc. But I think also with potential candidates like Harris, Castro, and others who are well rooted in the immigrant communities, he’s going to face a lot of questions about his immigration record. I like HRC but I think she unintentionally let him portray himself as this principled guy that he really isn’t.

I don’t want to be too much of a downer; there is a real possibility that the Democrats will emerge from the 2020 elections with control of Congress and the White House. But this Administration has certainly been an eye opener as to how fragile our Democracy is when one of the two major parties decides to throw out all of our standards and norms to serve the interests of a small clique of billionaires at everyone else’s expense.

It is good to have the ability to “bet” that the stock will go down as it balances out the positive and negative of stock market moves. It helps give some stability to the markets and is a good indicator of what may happen in the future. Should there be regulations in how that bet is done and the volume of it - sure - but to out right remove it I think would be a bad idea.

It is also a counter measure to losses being incurred. When done correctly it is a good mechanism for investment. When it is abused (like most things) is when the issues arise.

Most stock broker companies have rules in place that do not allow stock brokers to short stock anymore unless it goes through several layers of checks from their compliance office.

What you should be worried about are derivative debt holdings being used like they were prior to the 2008 collapse. That is the real issue. What you mention is really much to do about nothing.

re: #163 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Shorting stocks, at least, has some usefulness. Imagine trying to buy stock, and you can’t buy it at a good price, so you up your bid higher and higher to stupidly high levels. Shorting it is a tool that *helps* prevent that, because someone bets that it won’t go higher and borrows stock to sell to you at a more reasonable level.

Likewise, when a stock is crashing, shorting can slow, or even stop the crash entirely, because the people that shorted it earlier can now buy it and cover their short, creating a demand for the stock that otherwise wouldn’t exist.

It’s this weird alchemical insanity like CDOs of CDOs that have multiple layers of leverage that are eleven kinds of bullshit.

I think the stock market ought to be used entirely to reward people for responsibly investing in good companies. Something like shorting is openly calling for abuse; trusting that people won’t do it in this case is what gets us 2008. Shorting is the AR-15 of the stock market.

There’s other reasons as well. Say you think company A is the bees knees and company B which is in the same industry sucks. You’re either uncertain of what’s going to happen in the industry over the near term, or even think the it could go into decline. Shorting the stock of company B while buying the stock of company A lets you invest in company A while protecting yourself against a reversal in the industry as a whole.

If you think the industry is going to go into decline, you probably shouldn’t be investing.
If you think A is doing well, then you invest to help it get better.

I personally don’t mind rich people earning money on what they invest; it’s the best way to get them to do something with the money they are sitting on. But their reward is for choosing the best companies, not just for participating.

Not certain what you mean by “eliminate risk on loans.” There is always risk with loans; the issue is packaging loans into a derivative and selling it as an investment opportunity without fully knowing what items were input into the derivative.

That is why in 2007 adjustable rate mortgages were input into a derivative and given a AAA investment rating. People poured money into them because AAA means it should be a simple small growth investment. But when jobs started to decline and interest rates popped the ARM jumped and people could not afford their mortgages and those items in the derivative failed which caused the market to collapse because of the lost of wealth collectively (and quite quickly).

The only thing shorting of those derivatives did was make money for a small few who saw it coming (and gave warning to those who understood what was happening). It didn’t accelerate the collapse, it didn’t make the collapse worse, it was just present during the collapse.

Shorting stocks has been well regulated.

this, coupled with the problem of decoupling the underwriting risk from the collection risk

originating the loan, taking the up front fees, then selling the servicing takes all the incentive out of vetting the loan viability for the entire term of the loan

morphing mortgage backed securities into cdos masks the collection risk even further

there are many ways to profit in a market. investing for the long term is one.

buying low and selling high is not the only investment model, nor is it the only legitimate or “moral” one.

one could make an argument against day trading or other short term capital gains vs long

there can be lots of good reasons to sell an asset short, whether a security, commodity, house, etc.

because the shorting risk tends to be higher, it is less often used, discouraged to novices, and fairly well regulated

Trump breaks from decades of protocol with tweet before release of jobs report

President Trump on Friday broke with decades of protocol and commented publicly about the highly anticipated jobs report data 69 minutes before they were released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Treasury yields moved sharply higher within seconds of a tweet from Trump that said he was “looking forward to seeing the employment numbers at 8:30 this morning.” He had never issued such a tweet before. Bloomberg News data also showed that the value of the U.S. dollar moved sharply higher after the Twitter post compared with previous trades the mornings jobs data are released. That means traders were probably making investment decisions based on signals they took from Trump’s post.

According to Hart, Trump repeatedly brought up arming teachers, a policy proposal he has frequently promoted after school shootings.

Hart, an Army veteran, said she also suggested employing veterans as sentinels in schools. She said Trump responded, “And arm them?” She replied, “No,” but said Trump “kept mentioning” arming classroom teachers. “It was like talking to a toddler,” Hart said.

She said the president also focused on the shooter and his appearance, repeatedly describing him as “wacky.”

as i said above, shorting is a natural function of any free market.
personally i don’t/won’t short

i did consider it in ‘08 when it was obvious that Bear, Citi, Merrill etc were all tanking. that was an obvious money making opportunity. still i didnt do it

i bought some Citi when it clearly cratered, knowing full well it “had” to go up and i would sell it when it doubled. and i did.

buying to sell when it hits a number is really no different than shorting to buy when it hits a number. abstractly they are the same

and see here already “money making opportunity” is a different motivation from “long term investing”

since we can’t detect motives, we tax and regulate

when battleaxe is elected dictator i will not object to the regulation

The recent most famous Supreme Court decision is named after an organization whose acronym is C-U-N-T. That PAC was formed by a longtime Trump ally. I honestly can’t defend the slur used but goddamn I want conservatives to shut the fuck up.

Some private schools in Florida that rely on public funding teach students that dinosaurs and humans lived together, that God’s intervention prevented Catholics from dominating North America and that slaves who “knew Christ” were better off than free men who did not.

Facebook ditches trending news section

Facebook is shutting down its ill-fated “trending” news section after four years.

A company official told The Associated Press that the feature is outdated and wasn’t popular.

I found it worthless, because the “news” items were often old.

The trending section has proved problematic in several important ways. First came a report that its human editors were biased against conservatives. After Facebook fired those editors, the algorithms it replaced them with couldn’t always distinguish real news from fake.

In other words, “conservatives” were being protected from “fake news” and they complained, so they were given “fake news”.

Yep. It also explains why ignoring facebook is not an option

Many younger people, in particular educated younger people, eschew Facebook, but I think that is a horrible thing to do.

Why?

Because the older relatives are there.

First off, I think I am not alone when I write that I regret that when I was younger I did not reach out to relatives to find out what was going on.

But secondly, in regards to society and politics - your older relatives vote. And they are being fed, daily, on Facebook all sort of lying memes that are psy-ops against them.

In my Facebook timeline/wall/whatever I’m supposed to call it, it is usually the younger people who are posting corrections to the many outrageous hate-right lie-memes that go around.

Young educated people should consider Facebook a mission field for spreading rational thinking. Because I can guarantee you that cynical political operatives and religious nutjobs are already working those electronic mission fields.

It is painfully obvious to everyone but Trump and his die hard supporters that Kim has far more to gain from appearing to stand up to him face-to-face than he does from actually denuclearizing. And Trump tearing up the Iran deal gives Kim the perfect rationale for saying the US is a duplicitous and inherently treacherous negotiating partner whose mere presence in South Korea constitutes the real nuclear threat to the Korean peninsula. At best he’s going to demand a total withdrawal of American forces before he agrees to even consider giving up his nuclear weapons, and under no circumstances whatsoever is he going to even entertain giving up the civilian power program.

The real problem is that Trump also wants US troops out of South Korea and reportedly Kelly had to talk him out of doing that in February. He thinks SK should be paying the US protection racket money, additionally he wants those troops freed up for a war with Iran. So he’s already predisposed to give Kim what he really wants and call that a win.

In the Rooting For Injuries corner of foreign affairs, apparently Our “Friends” the Saudis have pissed off al Qeada (again?):

Extremist group al-Qaeda has sent a warning to Saudi Arabia’s crown prince that his efforts to liberalise the conservative kingdom are “sinful projects”.

“The new era of [Mohammad bin Salman] replaced mosques with movie theatres,” the Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) said in a statement.

Among the things they don’t like happening is pro wrestling:

Of particular ire to al-Qaeda, however, appears to be a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) event in the Saudi city of Jeddah which took place in April.

“[Foreign] disbelieving wrestlers exposed their privates and on most of them was the sign of the cross, in front of a mixed gathering of young Muslim men and women,” it said.

I could not imagine going through life that repressed. But I suppose it explains why they want to blow shit up. And no, I still don’t trust the House of Saud.

Once you do so, the goal shifts. If you ever manage to nail them down, it lasts literally until the meme shows back up in there timeline a week later.

I forget where I heard it, but the point has been made that a photo op is exactly what Kim wants. The moment he and Trump are in the room together there will be a thousand pictures taken. And those pictures will be used for propaganda, inside and outside North Korea. And I’m guessing whatever the actual outcome will be, Kim will tell North Koreans that he kowed the reckless American aggressor to his will.

in other words kim will lie to his people like trump lies to his
