You should ask him if he thinks we should hunt poor people for sport.

That’s a silly question—all Republicans think that. Ask him if we should force poor people to buy guns and hunt other poor people for food, thus rendering Food Stamps obsolete.

Baptist Pastor Defends Slavery as Beneficial and Biblical

Pastor Keith Gomez, who leads the Northwest Bible Baptist Church in Elgin, Illinois, wants everyone to know that slavery was not really a bad thing, and that it actually helped African Americans escape Africa.

“Some of you little whities can’t get it either. If it wasn’t for slavery, those folks would still be in Africa with a bone in their nose fighting lions, and if you don’t like that, you can lump it any way you want. That ain’t a prejudice. That is factual and historical.”

The fundamentalist take-over of the Southern Baptist Convention roughly coincided with the insurrectionist take-over of the National Rifle Association, though it was more drawn out. I’m not sure what this means except to illustrate that reactionary un-American forces have been laying the groundwork for their current power-grab for a long time. This process has now reached its final stage with the hijacking of the federal government itself.

Powell’s infamous memorandum targeted the NRA and churches. The Hunt Brothers provided the start up money to hijack both of them.

GOP Candidate Thinks Its “Normal” To Have Relationships With 12-Year-Old Girls

Republican candidate Mike Saari first denied then defended comments he made on Facebook seeming to normalize pedophilia.

To nobody’s surprise, the old perv invokes the Bible in his defense.

“Woman [sic] don’t seem to understand that from the very beginning of time men have taken young girls (Prior to periods) as wives and concubines. Even the bible talks of this so don’t make it sound like men that are attracted to 12 year old girls are sick… it’s you woman [sic] that can’t get a grip on reality is whats [sic] sick…it’s only normal and you can’t change normal or a persons [sic] DNA.”

There is nothing there on actual policy analysis. All I see is them complaining about how the press, liberals, Dems, gays, secularists, PoC, and on, and on, treat them. It can’t get any worse than this: The number 1 song when I turned 14 was Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoto. The bad part is that “Sukiyaki” was a nonsensical (and probably racist) English language market title given to what was actually a Japanese protest song (Ue o Muite Arukō” (上を向いて歩こう, “I Look Up As I Walk”).

Oh the #1 song on the day I was 14…”I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5.

My heart sank when I saw this “#1 song on the day you’re 14” thing, because for me that would mean September 1985, when even then I thought a lot of music in the charts was a bit iffy- and sure enough, this was number 1 in the UK on my 14th birthday.

David Bowie & Mick Jagger - Dancing In The Street

EDIT: Context- the number 2 at this time is UB40’s dreary cover of “I’ve Got You Babe” with Chrissy Hynde, and no. 3 is a rather wonky Eurodisco piece by Baltimora called “Tarzan Boy”, which is still better than numbers 1 & 2. (The video is also a prime example of Quantel effects overload.)

I’ve noticed a pattern among RWNJs talking heads. They inflate any sort of government experience, no matter how slight or peripheral, into professional expertise equaling years of experience.

So, given that my ex, her mother and her sisters all worked for the Census Bureau at various times, if I followed the Bongino model, I could then claim I was an expert on American demographics and score some airtime on Fox Nooz or maybe even CNBC as a talking head. For pay, of course.

Study: You Can Get Whites to Oppose Welfare With This One Weird Trick

The fact that there has never been a mass constituency in the United States (or any other Western democracy) for financing tax cuts for the rich by scaling back aid to the poor and working class has always been a problem for the conservative movement. But Republicans have long known a nifty trick for overcoming that obstacle to their regressive agenda: Get white Americans focused on their racial fears and resentments, and a lot of them will vote vote against the blacks instead of the plutocrats — and some will even come to believe that welfare programs don’t redistribute resources from the wealthy to working people, but rather, from diligent whites to indolent minorities.

A new study from sociologists at Stanford and UC Berkeley confirms the efficacy of this maneuver. During Barack Obama’s first term as president, the share of white Americans who expressed opposition to welfare rose sharply in surveys — as did the percentage who evinced high levels of racial resentment.

Nah. He’ll sign over title to a hotel to the North Koreans and claim it’s a way to MAGA.

Incidentally, I had understood from my studies at Google University that the North Korean general visiting the White House needed special State Department dispensation to visit the USA, since he was previously sanctioned, and that any North Koreans were specifically restricted to New York City for visits to the USA. So, the fact that Gen Choi was in the White House is a major coup for North Korea, which Kim will certainly use to his advantage at home.

Great work, Trumpino.

On an unrelated note, I have realized that the reason The Expanse succeeds so well as a book series and TV series is that the authors have fleshed out an entire future history and back stories for each of the major (and often minor) characters. Plus, the scriptwriters and actors have each brought something to the TV series that enhances the original work.

While listening to a SyFy podcast tonight, I learned that the casting of The Expanse deliberately avoided tokenism, to reflect the diversity of characters in the novels. IOW, they out-Roddenberried Gene Roddenberry. For example, the main female roles are all non-white, both in the books and TV show, and are played by suitably diverse actresses. Alex, the pilot of the Rocinante, is apparently of (India) Indian descent. Holden and Amos are white Americans, but Holden was born in a group marriage and Amos grew up in the slums of (future) Baltimore. The Belters have a patois all their own, not unlike the language Heinlein gave his loonies in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress.

He definitely wants to cut out the UK, the EU, Canada and (of course) Mexico. Meanwhile, he seems OK with Abe in Japan.

The conspiracy theorist in me looks at Russian meddling in the UK (Brexit), Spain (Catalunya) and Italy (populism) as part of Putin’s plan to weaken European nations to the point that he can have his way in the eastern nations without any resistance from NATO. Trump seems agreeable to such plans, AFAICT.

A capable and less self-centered American administration would view all these developments with alarm, and spring into action to counter them. Instead, we have rank amateurs who see ahead only as far as their greed allows them.

I regard it as a less idealistic version of Roddenberry’s future history, before humanity has coalesced into a united people in relation to alien species, but still able to surmount previous divisions by race, color or ethnicity. Instead, people in The Expanse are tribal according to their locations: Earth/Luna, Mars and The Belt. The writers have also tapped into migration patterns, with some Martians, for example, being South Asian, suggesting there was “chain migration” away from the Indian subcontinent to a new world. The comic book back story of Alex Kamal has his marriage arranged by the families, revealing some of the old ways have not quite been abandoned in the next two hundred years.

The whole series is really well thought-out, and I commend the authors and the screenwriters for their hard work.

“…Alliance’s Warrior Coal mine, which has a contract to supply coal to the Henderson plant, is 30 miles away in western Kentucky, where the stillness of the hills is interrupted by the drone of the mine’s ventilation fan and the occasional movement of rail cars.

To continue burning the coal under current regulations, Henderson must build a $34 million water treatment plant to keep toxic metals from discharging into a nearby river. And it must spend $21 million more to clean up its handling of coal waste — which now sits in a giant unsightly pond near the plant — as well as $16 million to overhaul electricity-generating turbines.

“It certainly doesn’t make sense to keep them operating as is,” said Chris Heimgartner, general manager of the Henderson utility that owns the plant, as steam billowed from the aging dual-stacks in the distance behind him. “There is just too much cheap energy.”

I was tweeting today about how this meddling in industry reminded me of what the Third Reich did during the 1930s, as Hitler prepared Germany for a two-front war. Basically, the government seized control of the industries needed for warfare and removed all free-market influence. The result was a national war machine and the impoverishment of the civilian economy. Germany was in a zero-sum game then. Largely isolated from the world economy and with no raw materials of its own, Germany had to “make do” with what it had. That required invading the USSR (for raw materials) and gearing up the relevant industries to make the invasion possible — a feedback loop that ultimately failed catastrophically for Germany.

Trump is playing by a similar rule book: isolating the USA from the world economy with his “deals” and co-opting industries to suit his political agenda, but without any apparent goal in mind. IOW, it doesn’t appear that he’s gearing up for a war or an invasion, because every move so far would hinder any such plans.

Surprised to see Georgia getting so many USSR immigrants. That’d be a fun memoir: From Georgia to other Georgia. Anyhow in my family’s case, earliest arrival was 1792 and the last was 1921 and I have the naturalization records of both, Well I take that back as my great grandmother got citizenship when my great grandfather did.

Even worse: it’s the only thing from Atlas Shrugged I agree with, that businesses being propped up against market forces is going to lead to more failure. At least socialism has the workers in mind.

Quite agree (especially about the Atlas Shrugged part…..)

To me, the Trump Administration’s regime’s coal policies remind me of nothing so much as the old (and failed) British attempts, in the pre-Thatcher days, to keep their coal industry going, even in the face of increasingly cheaper, more-efficient, and cleaner fuel sources. Of course, the economic dynamics were quite different: the British Government owned the mines, and the main “priority” was the preservation of mining jobs (and, concomitantly, union power). Here, the main beneficiaries seem to be the mine owners; the miners themselves, one supposes, are still waiting for the YUUUGE boost in their numbers that Trump’s coal-boosting was promised to provide.

Yeah, I tell my family not to take me to a Chinese place, because I can get authentic stuff every day here. But there are a few “authentic” places in the States. You just have to hunt for them. Telling the wait staff you have a visitor from China would encourage the cook to pull out the stops.

But I thought socialism was evil.

Yeah, well the “owning the libs” part is the main thing: wingers can very easily be fooled into believing that socialistic policies aren’t, in fact “socialism” as long they are pitched as :

1) Benefiting, - i.e. JOBS! JOBS! JOBS! - for “deserving” “Real Americans” (you-know-who), and
2) Hurting/defeating their “enemies” - like tree-hugging librul elistist America-hating enviro-weenies.

No. 2) being the more important factor, of course. Oh, and 3) being able to blame Somebody Else for any failure of said policies.

OTOH, it was a pleasant surprise to see that Jay C and I are lizard twins since we both have the same 14th birthday song.

Speaking of olds. My cousin that was our lead guitarist in the best band I ever played in (…because of him) is back in Columbus and came down last night to yak and catch up, party a bit and jam until just about midnight.

The trick behind the way they did the song is they recorded the vocals, then lip dubbed it to the video.

The video was done as one long continuous shot through the city, requiring coördinating city services, the people involved, about ten thousand guitar players, &c.

Once he took office, his abusive relationship with the truth came with the official seal of the White House, and that is of crucial importance. The Trump administration is now waging an unprecedented campaign of disinformation on the American people. “Authoritarianism works to corrode our shared foundation of truth, pushing us to a point where we so doubt our own sanity, it becomes too much of a chore to even care what is true. Such is the goal of the Trump administration: to bombard us with so many conflicting versions of reality that we throw our hands in the air and give up on being certain about anything at all. The falsehoods, whoppers, and salesman-like stretches all come down to this: Without the truth, we have no foundation from which to resist.”

When Mr. w and I rode our bikes across the country, we did Kansas from NE to SW. It took 3 weeks. On the last day, we came to our first Mexican restaurant since we left Everett, WA. [This was 1986. I’m sure there are more now.] First stop was a grocery store, where Mr. w got a pint of ice cream, and I got a pint of yogurt. Then the restaurant opened. We each got the biggest combo plate on offer, with pie and ice cream for dessert. The lady from the newspaper took our picture when we were done. Outside, by our bikes. We still looked skinny.

negotiating the art of the deal:

In 1985, Tony Schwartz, a not very famous writer, was interviewing Trump for a magazine article when Trump told him that Random House had asked him to write a book. Schwartz suggested calling it The Art of the Deal. Trump said he liked the name and asked Schwartz to write it. Normally ghost writers get a small flat fee, but Schwartz asked for half of the $500,000 advance and half the royalties and got both, an incredible deal for Schwartz (who could have been replaced by any one of a hundred other ghostwriters) and an incredibly bad deal for Trump. The book was a big success and the millions of dollars in royalties that Schwartz got all came directly out of Trump’s pocket. Thus we have the irony that Trump negotiated a terrible deal for himself on a book about how great a negotiator he is.

And if knowledge of the scope and scale of the Chinese buildup can be published in a major US newspaper (presumably the DoD has been aware for a while, one hopes) - it shouldn’t come as a “surprise” to the POTUS.

The only writer at NYT that I read is Krugman and I haven’t been over there in months. Good riddance to bad trash.

Charles Blow is worth keeping up with too, but yeah, those two are not enough to give that trashheap any more money.

re: #319 HappyWarrior

I’m not against the working class but I’m very much against the narrative that they’re the only people with voices in this country.

All I know about the working class is that they will not be helped by a tax cut for the rich. In my opinion what they need is better schools, clean air and drinking water, healthcare—things that Republicans don’t give a fuck about.

I don’t think Sykryrd and Neil was a real beef from what I understand.

Dr Lizardo  Jun 2, 2018 • 11:55:22am

Don’t know if there’s any Lizards in the Portland, OR area, but there’s a missing teen. This is from FB:

Please share! Kaliah Patrick age 14 did not come home from school yesterday. Her friends don’t know where she is. She was wearing jeans, a cream colored Volcom shirt and black nike slides. Police believe she was last seen over by Clackamas Town Center. Please call Milwaukie police if you have any info:[no phone numbers allowed] (we could use some prayers coming our way… we need this girl home with us!) only message me if you know something… I need to be able to get to any vital information quickly. Thank you. 😘🙏🏽

Absolutely but their representatives in the media don’t seem to want that.

Wow. After denying it for more than a year, Trump’s lawyers are now admitting he DICTATED Trump Jr.s dishonest statement about the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russian agents.

I am trusting that mueller knew this months ago

re: #264 Dr Lizardo

Maybe Trump’s gonna trade her in for a newer model.

That seems to be his typical pattern if his marital history is anything to go by.

I’m starting to think she told him to go fuck himself and is preparing to divorce him.

re: #330 JordanRules

I don’t think anyone’s said Neil Young vs Lynyrd Skynyrd, which is a shame as that was the best

Neil’s feud with David Geffen dwarfs the beef with Skynyrd (which was eventually patched up between Neil and Ronnie Van Zandt).

Hope you have a good flight! Where are you flying into?

Unclear right now. I got family all over the Midwest, so either O’Hare or Denver.
