A month ago it cost about $30 for my little Toyota. Today it’s closer to $40. One morning I saw the gas prices jump seven cents from the night before.

Yikes. I bought gas for my car yesterday; four gallons of ethyl cost me fifteen dollars. ($15 in the past would be a fill-up.)

Oh shut up you overgrown child whose sole job is going around crying about how hard it is being a conservative. Didn’t see you complaining when Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a slut. By the way, I thought you freaks were anti-political correctness. I guess that goes out the window when the Princess is the subject of mockery. By the way dumbshit, all the great comedians are lefties, not too many great conservative comedians out there because you suck at comedy.

News of the Weird as I sign out for the night …

Nuclear Bunker, 200 Feet of Tunnels and a Fire Lead to a Murder Charge in Maryland (New York Times, more at the link):

A man in Maryland has been charged with murder after his secretive project to build an underground nuclear bunker ended with the death of a worker hired to dig the network of tunnels.

The man, Daniel L. Beckwitt, 27, “was concerned about the increase in international tensions, and in particular North Korea’s acquisition of long-range ballistic missiles, and he was in the process of building a secure location for himself,” said his lawyer, Robert C. Bonsib.

Mr. Beckwitt was indicted on Thursday on charges of involuntary manslaughter, which can be punished by up to 10 years’ imprisonment in Maryland, and second-degree murder, which can be punished by up to 30 years’ imprisonment. Mr. Bonsib said he expected Mr. Beckwitt to post his $100,000 bail by Monday, adding that he would contest the charges.

There are probably several reasons.

Some media probably feel like focusing on Melania might appear to be picking on her.

Also, there could be hush-hush rumors going around the pubs and diners of DC about what is really going on some may want to respect Melania’s privacy.

Others - just don’t care.

My Dad’s Dad died right before Reagan became President and dismantled a lot of the work men had done like him ot make the government a fair arbitrator between labor and management. Dad has a memory of when Reagan primaried Ford. Dad’s Dad said he’d move to Canada if Reagan got elected. I don’t know how serious it was but I know he’d hate Trump not just for his policies for how he treats people. Not surprised then that all my cousins, aunts, and uncles who loved my grandfather aren’t Trump fans.

I got to know my father’s mother’s mother, the only great-grandparent I knew in person; I fear my children will envy that, since all of their great-grandparents passed years ago (my son was barely 2 years old when my last grandmother passed). My grandmothers lived on opposite sides of the same small American town, so there was no real contrast between them aside from age and lineage. We joked at my father’s mother’s funeral that my mother’s mother, who had passed some 10 years prior, was waiting in heaven and when my father’s mother finally arrived, she was sitting at a table with a jigsaw puzzle, asking, “What took you so damn long?”

We always say that my Dad’s parents are having martinis whereever they are. It was sad when she left us but I did feel some peace for her since I believed and you know what to an extend still do despite my agnosticism united with those she had lost like her brother, parents, husband, and old friends. We mourned her loss for sure and I cried that day but I did feel she had found peace. I’d do anything to see and talk to her again though. A cousin’s wife shared with me a letter she wrote to her. Apparently she helped her out on researching her husband(My grandfather’s nephew)’s family and thus my own. I just wish she were still here so I could ask more question and man I wish she could meet my niece and my niece her.

The reality about the Trumps, all of them, is that everything is a show, a facade.

When faced with real work, real decisions, and real pressure, we see what happens - confusion, idiocy, hiding.

I suspect that Melania finally decided she needed a break.

Although I come from a liberal family, I grew up in a fairly moderate area. A lot of my close friends and their families were pretty conservative. Honestly, I think Miller’s just a dick who has never grown up. It’s got nothing to do with smug liberals. He was being a dick in high school when most of us don’t care about the difference between left and right.

Despite the tension between my dad’s family and my mom’s family, the grandmothers wound up getting along famously later in life. It was a family tradition that they would get together over Christmas at the family estate and put together a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle. When my mom’s mother passed in 2006-2007, it was the beginning of the end for my dad’s mother, who had lost her jigsaw partner and one of her best friends. She had retired from city work in the same time frame, so when she discovered she had pancreatic cancer a few years later, the end was unfortunately brief.

Mom’s Mom and Dad’s Mom got along but I wouldn’t say they were friends. Just two totally different women as I got at downstairs. They did have some stuff in common of course besides my parents and brothers, they were and are both staunch Democrats, heavily influenced by the church they grew up in, loving to their children, and wiling to lend out a helping hand.

My mom and dad told me that his family was not allowed to come to the wedding because they disapproved of her. My dad’s mom bitterly regretted that decision to the end, and she was so glad that she got to make friends with my mom’s mom and to get to know my mom and pass on the family recipes. My dad’s dad was a stubbornly proud man, and as much as I am honored to be a son of the family, that is the one thing I hold against him.

It heavily colored my parents’ decision to bless my union to Mrs. Fish. She’s not what you call traditional, as you might expect; but they refused to be like their parents, and as long as I was happy and sure that she would be right for me, they wanted to be there for me. In that moment, I have never been prouder to be their son.

What I’m most proud as a son is how my parents have shown a willingness to grow as people. Although my Dad is definitely liberal, he sometimes has an Archie Bunker moment or too but I think he really does embrace the changes that have happened to our country.

It all came out when I was dating my first girlfriend. My dad told me the whole story about how his mom wasn’t allowed to come to his wedding and she sent someone to represent the family in her stead, and how she regretted that decision up until the day my dad introduced her to my mom’s family and brought her into the fold (I don’t know when that happened, presumably before I was born). My dad was telling me all this so that I would feel comfortable choosing the right woman, even if he or my mom didn’t approve, because the same thing happened to him when he was a college-age student deeply in love with a woman his parents didn’t approve of. It profoundly reshaped my understanding of my parents and grandparents, and despite the fact that they are all complete fucking wingnuts, I can’t help but respect them for it.

Miller’s mother’s family is from the same town in Pennsylvania as my mom’s. Used to be a reliably Democratic area for a long time until about 2000. Now it’s one of the reasons why PA went for Trump. I don’t know what child reads Rush Limbaugh and thinks YEAH THAT’S WHAT I WANT TO BE but that’s not a product of liberal orthodoxy or whatever Nichols is saying. Guys like Nichols and Miller became conservatives for the same reason Reagan became conservatives, they resented that they’d have to share the pie with someone else.

Tom Nichols is one of those Never Trumpers who will crack open some old scotch the minute they find out Mike Pence becomes president after Fuckface Von Clownstick is removed and they’ll go back to being entitled aging white shitbags, like William Kristol, David Frum, Jennifer Rubin, etc.

Nichols has a point, though, about money and politics. He says he had a hardscrabble early adulthood, working, and being with real people, because he wasn’t rich, and that “made him a better person” (I put that in quotes because I’m paraphrasing and calling bullshit). Stephen Miller has never had to worry about money in his life, ever. His parents co-signed on a $1.5 million condo in Washington D.C., where he now lives. He saw power in being a troll when he was a teenager, and he’s been a fucking destructive fucking (dare I say it) cunt ever since, and our whole country is paying the price.

The thing is conservatives are just as smug in their own way and libertarians definitely are. I’m not saying liberals can’t be smug but the smug liberal bs is just that. And a lot of what Tom would consider smug and hypocritical is rightfully pointing out truths that conservatives like him are uncomfortable with.

re: #51 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

That is tough, sorry for that story….damn….Realistic religious folks have become saner while the conservative takes on religion have gotten even more oppressive.

The closest I come to that was my parents saying that they couldn’t go to an uncle’s wedding when it happened because he was a catholic marrying a protestant…

Yeah. I find lots of folks project smug on liberals when they know we’re fucking right and have nothing left. They could step back and re-evaluate their position but they double down.

It was an eye-opener because my parents, for obvious reasons, weren’t real open about it up until the point where I started dating. Once my dad opened up to me, though, it suddenly made sense where they were coming from. That made the decision to marry Mrs. Fish so much easier. Yeah, she was a wild shieldmaiden of the North, but she was The Right One, and they even liked her from the start, which made it that much easier.

My big problem with conservatism as an ideology is how self full of self-rationalizing it is. I can worship capitalism and I can claim to be following Christ. I can claim to be for limited government while pushing restrictions on choice, bathroom laws, etc. I don’t like libertarians but they don’t have the same nauseating hypocrisy. What they do unfortunately have instead if a smugness based off of reading economic theory and being convinced they’re right without understanding economic reality differs from economic theory. Marxists often act the same way.

Millennials are pissed off at capitalism because so many of them are saddled in college loan debt and, to a lesser degree, medical debt from the crappy insurance plans they’ve been stuck with. Starting one’s professional career $100k+ in the hole is no laughing matter. That takes a lot of time to pay off, unless you happen to be a fucking sports star.

I’m not going to see much of their nest egg, and that’s by design, it’s so that they aren’t burdening me with having to pay their debts once they’re gone. Millenials were sold a bill of goods. There are a lot of good blueish collar jobs in the construction and building trades that eventually pay 6 figures but those are not he jobs that those guys are training for or even know exist.

They are not glamorous, advertised or even known to exist but there is a huge hole in the ladder. The folks bitching about immigrants can’t see the opportunity staring them right in the face. They don’t start off at huge salaries but they are careers, that is what this country used to be about.

And others that I may be willing to give a choice since they not only criticize Trump but the whole Republican Party under Trump i.e. Navarro and Rubin. That said, I have no desire to cater to their whims. It’s up to them to either fix what passes for conservatism in this country or let it die a miserable death and be honest that movement conservatism has always been a deeply flawed movement long before Trump but I ain’t holding my breath on that because so many of these men and women made their bones pushing that which is why I know many of you don’t trust them and I don’t blame you.

They lie to us and themselves by saying things like that Reagan would never do that and indeed there are things that Trump has done that Reagan would not do but other things including things that define Trump like running a racist campaign are things Reagan would do. It’s a little easier to push back against that now since Trump hasn’t but there are fair questions about his financial ethics from what I understand and there would be IMO even if there wasn’t the scandal with Jane. I’ll tell you why I really hate the idea of Sanders in 2020 though. And it’s simple. We’er supposed to be a party about change and freshness. An 80 year old guy whose arguments are stuck in the 50’s isn’t the solution. I don’t know what draws so many young people, mostly white tbh to people like him and Ron Paul, they’re not revolutioanry at all. In fact, they’re fighting the 19th century century.

That blue is an amazing pigment, but the things I wanted to know were artsy type things—can it be used in paints or fabric coloring? Apparently it can be, but right now it’s about six times the price of cobalt blue (according to Gamblin, a paint maker). And anyone who has ever looked at artists’ paints seriously (or, in my case, sold them) knows that cobalt blue is up there in the “most expensive paint” category. So I don’t see it becoming a paint for artists any time soon.

On the subject of a name, though, how about “Pandoran powder-puff”?

When I got out of college had problems paying off the $8,250 I borrowed. When I started at Pitt in 1973 Tuition and Room & board were both $405. Now they are 15X as much!

in 2016 we hired kids in our office whose college debt approached $100K. It’s f’n insane. But this is part of the Republican Master Plan to dumb down the masses.

I was kinda lucky with my daughters. They each spent ~3 years at a junior college and working part time, I paid for their junior year, oldest at UCB, and youngest starts as a junior at Mills College this year, but in their senior year they qualify on their own wages because of their age, so get free or reduced tuition based on their income.

Officials have identified two climbers who died when they fell from El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

The climbers named Saturday were 46-year-old Jason Wells of Boulder, Colorado, and 42-year-old Tim Klien of Palmdale, California.

Rangers received multiple 911 calls that two climbers had fallen while climbing the Freeblast Route.

This investigation is ongoing and no further details were immediately available.

It was the second fatal incident in Yosemite National Park in a little over a week.

Last week, a hiker fell to his death while climbing the iconic granite cliffs of Half Dome in rainy conditions

My condolences to their kin and friends.

I don’t want to CT this but man this administration has a lot strange goings on.

I don’t want to CT Melania’s status either…..but fuck it’s fucking weird. It would be weird with just Melania not being seen in public for weeks, but there are at least two instances of Trump trying to cover up her disappearance.

On May 25, responding to reporters’ questions about the first lady’s wellbeing, President Trump gestured toward a White House window and said, “She’s doing great. She’s looking at us right there.” As reported at the Washington Post, there was no sign of Melania in any of the windows. The remark may well have been an off-hand comment not meant to be taken literally.

That is fucking weird.

A husband sending a “proof of life” tweet for his missing wife? That’s REALLY fucking weird.

About the only thing I would rule out is her being dead, as I’m pretty sure the secret service would report that……but something like Trump beating the crap out of her? That’s something the SS would probably help keep secret.

It’s certainly weird. Maybe she had cosmetic surgery and things didn’t go so well, or alternatively, maybe it went well but she needs a bit more time to heal. She’s only one year younger than me and as we get older, it takes longer to heal - just one of those facts of biology.

It’s definitely……..odd.

Every “democrat” who called in said they’d voted for Trump and he should be left alone to do the job he was elected to do. I suspect there was a lot of bad faith in the calls, but there really is a sizable segment of the population that have believed Trump’s lies from the beginning and any attempt to bring him to justice will be seen as the culmination of a witch hunt. There will be no catharsis.

Morning!

I see there were opportunities taken to trash the Cleveland Browns last night.

I have a long memory.

Trying to watch the local politics show on NBC and one thing stands out…no matter what is going wrong with the Republican party it is very important for any Republican to mention both sides do it. And if you have to, just mention something that isn’t even a fair comparison…Democrats do it too.

This all comes from the current mess in the Ohio Senate and House where things are in what can be called political constipation due to all the resignations of criminal Republicans.

There is no current Ohio House Speaker because Republicans can’t agree on who it should be and the Democrats are just standing back and watching the implosion. Of course that is made out to be the Democrats are not helping by not working with the Republicans.

Just like the US Congress…Ohio Republicans are the majority and can’t work with each other. So, blame it on Democrats.

Arrrrrrgh!

I wouldn’t hate to see Trump in jail. That’s the one thing that will restore America’s standing in the world: if we can prove that noone is above the law and that includes the piece of garbage who now thinks he’s king.

On the heels of that $4 “award” in Florida for being in your own garage while black:

rawstory.com

Dr. Covey Banks, a physician, and her family were vacationing in Florida when they were attacked in a hotel pool.

In a Facebook post with video of the family yelling and calling her a “black b*tch” and “n*gger,” Banks described an encounter that started because she dared point the direction of the restroom to a woman who wanted a child to simply pee in the pool at the Omni luxury hotel.

The family came back and became belligerent—in the video, a man holding a can of Miller Lite and slurring his speech tells her to “get back in the pool” and “don’t come to Florida” as she shoots video of the women attacking her—splashing Banks and her family and then finally escalating into intense verbal abuse.

What’s worse, when Banks asked hotel security to act they refused to immediately remove the family from the hotel.

“My niece saw them going into their room, which was in the same building and on the same floor as ours and my kids were frightened when we seen them at the pool later Sunday evening,” Banks writes.

Banks then called the police, who were also unhelpful in her telling, telling her that if she wanted to press charges they would both be charged.

The way I read this comment, it sounds more like Rep. King is using “stock” in its old-fashioned (as in 19th-Century-eugenics-type Old-fashioned) usage: basically code for “white folks just like us” -i.e. “English-speaking white Protestants of [accepted-varieties-of] European descent

The next rhetorical step is “purebred” vs. “mongrel”, which just MAY be a trope too far even for Steve King, but it’s an election year, who knows?

It does, though Florida seems to take the cake (the woman who had a restraining order against her husband and jailed for “standing her ground,” Trayvon Martin, &c).

That $4 award (reduced to 4¢ by the judge) was far more insulting by the jury and judge than the jury simply finding that the plantiff’s had not met their burden-of-proof. That award was the jury and judge punishing the family for daring to bring a case.

Their lawyer stated they would appeal. (I don’t know how appeals go for civil suits.)

Quite right, but those concepts have also been part of the “cultural” aspects of American “nationalism” since the beginning: e.g., Ben Franklin grumping about the immigration of poor Germans into Pennsylvania in the 18th C. or the general reaction of “natives” to the influx of the Irish in the 1840s, etc. Not even to mention racial obsessions.

Yes, America has always professed a dedication to the values of “equality under the law” - but there has always been (still is) a non-trivial bloc of the citizenry who are only too prone to define said values as “equality for those who deserve it” [insert Orwell quote HERE] : “deserving”, of course, by definitions we can all imagine.

Morgan is very quiet about her father and background. As far as I can tell, she doesn’t mention her father at all. I’m guessing she doesn’t because he was never involved in her life.

They say she is of Cuban and African American background. I think that makes her very suspect to any stupid white nationalists crap.

One thing, she seems very intelligent and diverse in what she likes to cover and do. More power to her.

I do know one thing…she is very attractive.

And as far as the white nationalist Arthur Jones running for Congress, that fool has apparently been running for political offices forever. The RNC is not backing him as he is too toxic. For some reason no one else contested as a Republican in Illinois district #3.

I don’t know Chicago…but what is going on in that district that this old fart is all that ran for the seat as a Republican? Is it a strictly Democratic area and Republicans shy away from contesting it?

Messianic Judaism is a religious view of certain Jews who claim Jesus as the Messiah. (Which kind of makes them no longer Jewish but Christians following Jewish laws.)

I wonder what the current count is of ‘religions’ is in the world right now?

As a Catholic schooled person, we were of course always taught it was the one true religion built upon St. Peter as a direct linage to Jesus Christ. Sounded good. They had plenty of books to back that up.

First grade in Catholic school and I was already confused by that teaching because all my neighborhood friends were of other religions. They seemed fine to me.

There was only 11 more years of confusion to go. But it did teach me a lot about religions and man.

The malevolent religion makes people come up with all sorts of excuses for their bad behavior:

If y’all recall, yesterday I wrote about the problem of the wife of the former chief of staff of Patterson, who published private letters.

Well, now she has printed this excuse:

Image: DexA-ZmUcAA9fiH.jpg

Note in the first claim she says she did nothing wrong because she was given copies of the private letters but did not handle the private letters herself.

As if publishing copies of private letters is different than publishing private letters herself. It’s still unethical.

Then she goes on to justify her actions because she is defending Patterson, who she still thinks did nothing wrong.

It’s exactly this type of searing of the conscience that allows these people to support Trump.

If you’re born a Jew, the only way to become Not A Jew is to affirmatively, deliberately, become a Christian or Muslim.

There are Buddhist Jews, we’re fine with that. Atheist Jews, not a problem. There’s “we’re ashamed of them and embarrassed by them and wish they weren’t Jews but we’re stuck with them” Jews (e.g., Madoff), still Jews.

But anyone who declare for Team Jesus or Team Muhammed… is no longer a Jew.

The argument in that thread appears to be that the teen in question who stole the shoes was accompanied by another person who pulled a firearm out during the robbery.

If that is so, then the teen is also guilty of armed robbery (even though he didn’t have a weapon).

Yes, the two cases are apples and oranges. I think we have to be consistent about gun violence. But, the problem here is that the young man was 15 years old and charged as an adult.

His age should have been more of a consideration with some harsh consequence but alternative to prison time. I think had he been a white kid, the results would have been more of a slap on the wrist, which is sad…See: school shooters. Almost always white male teens. Also, Giuliani’s daughter was a grown woman at 21. One day Community service? Yeah, rich white privilege.

I don’t know enough about the case of the stolen shoes to have an informed opinion, nor of Giuliani’s daughter’s case. I do know there are vast disparities in sentencing around the country for equivalent crimes.

I’m pretty sure, for example, that a written warning I got for speeding on US-30 one mile inside Nebraska from Wyoming (75 in a 60) probably would have been far worse If I wasn’t white, local resident, with Gold Star Family plates on my car and “veteran” on my license (despite my long hair and trilby hat).

Sadly, as we honor the real heroes of America, the men and women who gave their lives for this country, the NFL leaders got it wrong again.

The league, once again, refused to strap on their backbone and take control of player behavior during the playing of the national anthem.

Instead of fining and banning the overpaid disrespects of our flag and our country from the game, the league opted to fine the team owners. How stupid is that?

If they really want to get the “players” attention, fine them heavily at the first offense, and ban them from the “game” at the second.

Yeah, dude, you don’t speak for the men and women who gave their lives for the country.

Just read the linked Amy Mek story. I thought some of that sounded familiar. When I saw the killer’s name it hit me.

The “stripper” that was mentioned in the article that was killed by Paul Cortez, Catherine Woods, was the daughter of the former director of the Ohio State University marching band. So, it was big news at OSU and around Columbus.

She had the classic dreams of going to New York to work as a dancer, etc. in theatrical work. I think she was a trained dancer/ballerina. She worked as an exotic dancer (not really a stripper from what the word was around Columbus) to make a go of things and met up with Cortez.

My understanding is it was a pretty clearly proven case. Weird knowing that Amy “Mek” fell into supporting Cortez. And it then gets stranger. Wow.
