Boghossian popularized, or at least brought to a wider audience, the phrase “doxastic closure”, which is a more formal way of describing “epistemic closure”.

Anyway, be it imam or one of the thousands of SBC pastors who are entreating their followers to “pray” (in the latter case over the Patterson scandal), the idea is to keep the followers into a closed system, the “prayer” being a way to reinforce faulty thinking.

And the issue of the deathbed conversion. A crappy person who sincerely converts at the end of his life is granted paradise; a non-believer who tried to live the most non-offensive life he can is doomed.

That and the issue of “God-fearing.” If God is Love, why would you fear him?

In the previous thread, Charles tweeted that the problem with impeaching Trump is that Mike Pence would become President. However, if Mueller’s report provides clear evidence that Trump obstructed justice, he must be impeached anyway to demonstrate that our constitutional system of government has not been completely broken. Plus 67 votes can’t be reached without many Republicans voting to remove Trump, which would badly splinter the GOP. The deplorable base will continue to believe Trump has been framed regardless of the evidence, and they will view the GOP establishment and Mike Pence as having been complicit in the frame job, thus ensuring a Democratic victory in 2020.

Why not try our organic coffee? Each cup has been lovingly flown here by massive kerosene burning jet aircraft before being carefully placed in diesel powered vans for delivery to our cafe built using heavy construction methods to be served in non reusable cups.

A functioning “free market” would ensure that the price of any item reflects its actual costs and does not exclude the “downstream” costs of disposal and damage to human health and the environment.

If that were the case, then burning kerosene and throwing away plastic would be a lot more expensive and we would be working on viable alternatives.

“We’re not here to criticize or be antagonistic toward people and to beat them down,” he told the newspaper. “There’s no threat. The people in the community should not feel a threat.”

Atheism, alcoholism and “emotionalism” are some of the other seminar topics. Gibbs said topics such as racism or sexism won’t be discussed because “there are only so many Wednesdays in a summer.

NASA is discussing turning the ISS over to a consortium of private companies to run. This seems like a really bad idea, and the international part might get in the way of this latest Trump administration attempt to privatize all the things.

washingtonpost.com

The international nature of the station could make it tricky, though perhaps there could be an international commercial partnership with some sort of a government role, said Frank Slazer, the vice president of space systems for the Aerospace Industries Association.

“It will be very hard to turn ISS into a truly commercial outpost because of the international agreements that the United States is involved in,” he said. “It’s inherently always going to be an international construct that requires U.S. government involvement and multinational cooperation.”

[NASA administrator Jim] Bridenstine declined to name the companies that have expressed interest in managing the station, and said he was aware that companies may find it “hard to close the business case.” But he said there was still seven years to plan for the future of the station, and with the White House’s budget request “we have forced the conversation.”

Meanwhile, the Pentagon gets a fat budget and the Trumps and their appointees are sucking the Treasury dry.

Maybe we can rename the ISS the “Everybody except the USA International Space Station.”

Isn’t it funny that it’s a sports magazine that is calling out the White House’s BS on the NFL but the mainstream media can’t be bothered to “risk” anything?

Don’t Be Fooled: President Trump Is Using NFL as Distraction for Bigger Issues Surrounding White House

By ROBERT KLEMKO June 05, 2018

I could write a thousand words about that statement that rocked the NFL on a Monday night in June, and it wouldn’t be getting blood out of a stone either. I’d break it down line by line, until all of its falsehoods were laid bare.

If I were writing that column, I’d probably focus on the tremendous deceit of the President’s central premise that protesting NFL players dishonor the men and women of the military by protesting during the national anthem. If it were worth going over once more, we could get into the reasons for the protest (racial inequality in the U.S.) and how the original kneeling NFL player —Colin Kaepernick—did so rather than sit on the bench as he had done initially, out of respect, and a firm belief that this country and these ideals we ratified in our founding documents are something worth fighting for.

I could talk about the totalitarian tough guy nature of that line—“They disagree with their president”—an assertion cast as though it were capital sin, rather than what it is: the daily yield of a healthy democracy. I might have written about all that, but that wouldn’t be giving the president and his staff enough credit.

Yes, the President knows this sort of thing is red meat for his base. Sticking it to uppity black millionaires has been good for business since the first cretin came up with the lie that the first black president wasn’t born in this country, and well before that even. But that’s not what Monday’s statement was about. This was play-action. This was John Elway faking the handoff to a migraine-addled Terrell Davis in the Super Bowl. This was Dan Marino faking the spike and tossing it into the waiting hands of Mark Ingram Sr.

Monday, if you hadn’t heard, was a Bad Day for the President. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders dodged questions about her statement last August that the President “certainly didn’t dictate” a misleading statement Donald Trump Jr. released regarding a reported meeting with a Russian lawyer during the campaign, a statement disputed by a letter sent in January by the President’s lawyers to the special counsel investigating him. But that was just the appetizer.

Next there came two bombshells, a veritable surf and turf on a fun-filled Monday. There was the late-breaking news that a review of documents seized in an FBI raid of Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s home and office found that just a small fraction of them—less than 200 of nearly 300,000 documents and files—are privileged or partially privileged according to a court-appointed watchdog, contrary to arguments made by lawyers for Trump who are not under federal investigation. On top of that, special counsel prosecutors accused former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of tampering with witnesses in the tax and money laundering case against him. He could face jail time.

The fight with the NFL is fun. It gets the people going. And it concerns NFL owners so much they made a rule against demonstrations during the anthem that’s likely done more to divide protesting players and conservative-leaning owners than Trump ever could. Of course, Trump found a way to criticize the NFL for that measure, tweeting that staying in the locker room during the anthem—an option the league offered to players without punishment—was just as unpatriotic as kneeling.

He’s keeping the fight going, because down in Washington, the house of cards is tipping over. Don’t look away.

Trump is a goddamned liar and scammer.

Eagles players didn’t kneel during the anthem. Most of them didn’t want to attend, and Trump was embarassed by the lack of attendance so he canceled by claiming the lie.

But that’s not what worries me (as much). What worries me is that more people were killed due to the disastrous Trump admin response to Maria in Puerto Rico than 9/11 and Katrina combined and there hasn’t been so much as a hearing on the matter, let alone any action by this administration to improve the situation on Puerto Rico.

Trump’s busy this morning tweeting up a storm of lies and deflections, all while his longtime buddy Manafort’s going to be thrown in jail for violating bail and get a bunch of new charges added for witness tampering/intimidation. Meanwhile, you’ve got Papadopoulos’s wife essentially going on tv to get Trump’s attention for a pardon (because that’s how everyone knows to get Trump’s attention. Trump’s also busy lying about how families are being separated by his own actions and claiming that it’s the Democrats fault.

I mean, the big problem is that they seem to be targeting the US economy wholesale in retaliation. And Trump is just diving deeper into the grievance mongering and alienating them further because fuck it, lets make enemies of all our fucking allies because MAGA BITCHES!!!

Fucking god help us…

I think it’s a bit late for that; Trump is indeed most visible part of Axis America but (i) his EU-based assets don’t amount to that much; and (ii) there remains the fundamental issue that a not insignificant (if not the majority, I admit) of the US of A has declared itself the enemy of democracy, the rule of law and decency in general. Whatever punishment is eventually meted out by History on your country may not be fair on an individual basis, but it will be deserved.

I suppose it’s kind of endearing that Macron could be naibve enough to still have illusions about the President of the united States.

Remember De Gaulle when presented with photos of the Cuban missile sites said, “I don’t need to see them; the word of POTUS is enough for me” — and De Gaulle didn’t particularly like the USA.

We have many streets etc. named after FDR, JFK, Eisenhower, etc. It requires a leap to truly comprehend the sheer awfulness of DJT. Perhaps Macron has finally gotten it.

NASA is discussing turning the ISS over to a consortium of private companies to run. This seems like a really bad idea, and the international part might get in the way of this latest Trump administration attempt to privatize all the things.

Anecdotally a friend of mine told me yesterday that the European Space agency is no longer sharing some data with NASA and has instructed its subcontractors to do the same.

I hope so. A lot of the world seems to have gotten the memo. Most of America refuses to read the thing, unfortunately. Our only allies left seem to be Likud Israel. I don’t even count Russia as an ally because at this point, we’re a client state.

I don’t think Macron actually has any illusions about how awful he is. I think he’s trying different approaches and hoped their last session together would grant him a little currency to be frank.

A thought: Trump thinks he can negotiate South Korea’s terms in the same way westerners negotiated South American and Middle Eastern boundaries since the late 1800s. It’s probably not going to go very well for him when he tries to give up South Korea in order to broker a deal.

Yeah, I am not sure South Korea is going to have anyone there to advise the Fat Orange Turd — not that he would listen to them or anyone else. Kim will be able to ask for whatever he wants, and Trump will probably say OK.

As you may remember, former seminary president Paige Patterson lost his cush emeritus position and retirement perks last Wednesday after it became clear some documents which should have been in a student’s file at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary had been taken by Patterson when he left to become president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2003.

Then, the wife of Patterson’s former chief of staff took those documents and put them on the Internet to smear the woman who had reported her rape. This brought out accusations that Patterson and his supporters had violated FERPA, which protects the confidentiality of student records.

On Monday, Patterson’s attorney put out a statement claiming to release “facts” in defense of Patterson. It’s not a coherent document, as Shelby Sharpe dodges and weaves around the possible FERPA violation, tries to say that Patterson had a right to see the documents his firing was based upon, and in other ways attempts to excuse Patterson’s bad behavior. He concludes by asking SEBTS to come to a mediation by Peacemakers.

sbcissues.wordpress.com

For SEBTS’ part, they want their documents back and do not agree with any mediation.

sebts.edu

Patterson’s supporters have been all over Twitter claiming he was wronged and didn’t get due process. The problem with that is unless this was covered in an employment contract (and for all we know, Patterson may have been an at-will employee), there is no due process generally required in private employment.

I could go on about this but I will spare you. However, Patterson is still scheduled to give the convention sermon at the SBC annual meeting next week. We’ll see what happens.

The same one who insisted during current SC Justice Sotomayor’s nomination process, that she was literally not a real American because she pronounced her own last name in a ‘Hispanic’ way rather than an ‘American’ way. Mind, Sotomayor was born in the US, to Puerto Rican parents. So there’s nothing about her that doesn’t scream ‘American’ even by her own heritage.

The deplorable base will continue to believe Trump has been framed regardless of the evidence, and they will view the GOP establishment and Mike Pence as having been complicit in the frame job, thus ensuring a Democratic victory in 2020.

while we are speculating, it is not beyond any stretch that pence is included in muellers report. unfavorably. with evidence

Actually, the great irony of their attacks on the exchanges is that the 80% of enrollees who are subsidized can get even better plans than they could previously afford. Its just the older, higher income people (IOW, Republicans) who don’t get subsidies, who are getting screwed by soaring premiums. Mother nature has an unkind side. A long term view. We like to kid around and compare our natural disasters. Who gets warning, etc. I won’t ever have to worry about a hurricane in my area code. Or a nearby volcano. Not this epoch. If I drive up the 395 with a geology nerd, I will hear all about the shaping of California by volcanic activity. We can have a long talk at 70 mph, and keep seeing the results on the ground. It’s so massive it just is hard to imagine. Standing on Hawaiian islands, volcano is all you ever get for real estate.

If those of us here, Daily Kos, and other left blogs watched MSNBC to get more of our news, not only would it have a lot more programming, but it would blow Fox out of the water.

The amount of people who watch even their entertainment shows in real time on broadcast and cable TV is continuing to decrease. Fox has an old audience. This ship has sailed I think.

News shouldn’t be a profit center anyway.

I agree. Just trying to make the point that they look good because their audience’s viewing habits really skew where people get their news. A different way of measuring audience, rather than basing it on TV views, needs to be created.

Get yer popcorn ready!!

A federal judge on Tuesday scheduled a hearing for June 15 on a request by special counsel Robert Mueller to revoke ex-Trump presidential campaign chief Paul Manafort bail for allegedly trying to tamper with two potential witnesses against him.

Mueller, in documents filed Monday night, accused Manafort of trying to “suborn perjury” and get witnesses to conceal evidence related to his upcoming criminal trials while under home confinement in his Virginia mansion. Mueller asked that Manafort’s $10 million release bond be revoked, which would result in the lobbyist being sent to jail.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson gave Manafort’s lawyers until Friday to respond to Mueller’s motion, which was filed in federal court in Washington.

Manafort’s spokesman had no comment on Mueller’s claims Tuesday. But he told CNBC he expected to have a statement later in the day.

If Manafort is jailed, it could ramp up the intense pressure he already faces to plead guilty and to begin cooperating with Mueller’s ongoing probe of President Donald Trump’s campaign.

THey will inevitably fall off or be pulled off. When somebody comes in at the beginning of their shift, how will they know which bracelet belongs to which child? What Iran means most likely is the creation of Israel was a mistake (not my words) as the state of Israel was imposed by the Brits and French (and UN) as a way to give space for the Jewish people whom had survived the Holocaust. Without that international push the Palestinians would not have been marginalized and the conflict would not have taken place as there would not have been a whole created state (that was basically born in apartheid).

Not saying I agree with… well… anyone in the conflict. But the right wing Israelis keep pushing their boundaries with the Palestinians and basically have them (Palestinians) caught between a rock and a hard place with no where to go. Are Israelis becoming the same object that once hurt their own people? Maybe - time will tell.

Someone on Twitter ran with the same argument about “Dem Leadership” not talking about the GOP Tax scam. To be fair, I’d rather be a Jew in Iran than to be one in Pakistan. In spite of Iran’s hostility to Israel, it has thankfully not translate into outright open hostility by Iranians against their Jewish citizens.

They actually have lots of Democrats to choose from. Ted Lieu and Maxine Waters are also particularly outspoken.

The media narrative is the following
1. Democrats need to stop trying to talk about policy and talk about Trump.
2. Democrats need to stop just talking about Trump and give people other reasons to vote for them.

These two things cannot be simultaneously true. Either Democrats are talking about policy or they’re not, about Trump or they’re not. The only way these statements could be remotely consistent is if the Democrats actually don’t talk about either Trump or policy because the dim-bulbs in the media won’t actually give them any air time.

re: #231 Patricia Kayden

Iran’s anti-Israel stance is scary. I get that you may not agree with Israel on many issues but to want to eradicate an entire country is wrong.

Iran’s anti-Israel stance is little different from the positions of other Arab/Muslim nations in the region. Iran’s been singled out by Israel because of Iran’s nuclear program so that plays into it.

Other countries are piggybacking on Israel’s position against Iran because they too benefit from Iran containment - eg the Saudis.

But the Saudis have no love for Israel. They see Iranian containment as protecting them in the larger conflict - Sunni vs. Shi’ite. If Iran goes nuclear, then the Saudis will have to do likewise to balance the equation.

It’s almost as though Israel isn’t part of the equation. Everyone suspects/knows Israel has nukes, but no one expects them to use them unless attacked first.

Iran having nukes puts Saudis in grave risk, because they’d be the target first - not Israel (and should the Saudis get nukes, they too see Iran as the bigger threat).

Frankly, Israel has more in common with Iran than the Saudis, but for the fact that the Iranians have been fueling Hamas and Hizbullah that have long threatened Israel. Netenyahu can’t and wont get past that - and instead harps on Iran’s nuclear program despite fact JCPOA has contained the threat it posed. Trump’s actions just spur Iran to kick the deal to the curb and take the North Korean approach to get a bomb and make Trump give concession after concession.

SANDUSKY, Ohio — U.S. immigration agents made more than 100 arrests Tuesday at an Ohio gardening and landscaping company, one of the largest such stings in recent years and part of the Trump administration’s growing crackdown on employers for hiring people who are in the country illegally.

The 114 arrests occurred at two locations of Corso’s Flower & Garden Center, one in Sandusky, a resort city on Lake Erie, and another in nearby Castalia. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it expected criminal charges including identity theft and tax evasion.

No criminal charges have been filed against Corso’s, but the employer is under investigation, authorities said. Two locations were searched, and Khaalid Walls, an agency spokesman, said “a large volume of business documents” were seized.

re: #173 Unshaken Defiance

The Trump brand is so tarnished I’m amazed Fox gets the ratings it does. Right from failed Casinos way back when to how his tweets just this week make it hard to sell the brand today.

Makes you wonder if all Fox News is doing is keeping Trump popular with the base even if it costs Fox News in ad revenue.

If they continue this trend in lower ad revenue but keep up the cheering for Trump then it would be pretty clear they are really working for Trump.

And if that is the case, then they really are nothing but an extension of the Trump administration because no business purposely loses revenue without trying changes in programming.

Of course many have suspected they were not really a news site and just a conservative message system. We might be getting the evidence that proves it.

I followed the link but didn’t see the “documentation of Dems only being invited to Sunday shows to talk Russia”. But this does match this story “Dems Give Up on Trying to Get Cable News to Care About Anything but Russia”. And it confirms what I’m seeing about Democrats viewing requests to talk about Russia as a problem, rather than as 1.) a golden political opportunity, 2.) a chance to denounce the foreign government attack on them with Republican complicity, and 3.) a duty to warn that “the very idea of America is at risk.”

So that article was good at pointing out how myopic the media is. I’m not drawing the same conclusion that they are getting invited to talk Russia and not going though.

Oh and the article was also good for countering the other side of the ‘criticize the Dems messaging’ folks who say that all they do is talk Trump.

They’re not misreading the situation. They have no interest in accuracy. They’re not even addressing Eagles fans.

This is establishing a shallow, sentimental rationale for discounting anyone that sides with the Eagles or takes a stance other than total compliance with the narrative they’ve developed about disrespecting the armed forces and the flag. The whole point is…nobody else matters, no one else’s thoughts are worth considering.

It works exactly like dictators that constantly shit-talk at the US: the addressed is not the audience, the message is that there’s an external enemy and if you’re perceived as agreeing with that external enemy, you’re fair game for retaliation.

A good take on the Trump-Eagles dustup.

Last month, in a moronic move destined to fail, the NFL attempted a Trump Appeasement Plan by (sort of) rewriting its national anthem policy. It didn’t actually outlaw protests during the anthem - players can just stay in the locker room.

Team owners thought the policy would give Trump enough of a “win” that they hoped he might stop beating them up.

Please. It was one of the most ludicrous crisis-management strategies ever implemented. Watching Trump pound on the NFL at every opportunity has become a sport unto itself.

[…]

Eagles players are actually staying away for myriad reasons. To think the only objection they have with Trump is the national anthem policy is ridiculous and runs contrary to historical fact.

During the 2017 season and playoffs, not a single Eagles player knelt for the national anthem. Not one. In every single game, every single player stood. Even after Trump called NFL players who did kneel “sons of bitches,” the response by players was to stand for the anthem. They even linked arms with police officers and military personnel who had been invited to the game.

To repeat: There were no anthem protests by the Eagles, no matter what Trump or the state-run media is peddling.

“No one refused to go simply because Trump ‘insists’ folks stand for the anthem,” former Philly wide receiver Torrey Smith tweeted.

Whatever. Facts don’t matter, and Trump knows that. This is “Fox & Friends” porn.

Trump doesn’t have a patriotic bone spur in his body - if he did, he wouldn’t have spent his time belittling prisoners of war, gold-star families, the FBI, federal judges and intelligence agents who protect the country from attacks.

He is, however, an undeniable master of waging culture wars to rile up his base. This is a popular issue for him to fight on, so he fights on it every time he can. It’s like a pop station playing the hits. If his voters shifted sentiment and started believing the players should have a right to kneel, Trump would quickly shift and champion that side.

Only the NFL could have been too dumb not to realize all of this when it decided to give him all the ammo he needed to blast it.

Stephen A. thinks he’s sending it in on an organization that wouldn’t let him buy the Buffalo Bills years ago. I think he’s right, because That Asshole never, ever lets go of a grudge.

They still repeat and lead with his lies and let him do narrative setting in a way they never do with Democrats. They covered empty podiums. They do not say “Even after 27 histroric indictments, Trump uses Twitter to repeat the “Witch Hunt” narrative that does not comport with the reality on the ground”.

Jordan, I think you may have missed dangerman’s point.

He wasn’t covering for any of the media.

I believe he was saying Mueller and the Democrats are laying low, not blathering and holding their cards tight.

And that I think it goes to the criticisms that many frustrated with how this is going are stating. I hear a lot of criticism the Democrats are not doing enough and Mueller is just dragging on and on.

I think what may be happening is the Democrats realize they have a lot against them. Such as The Roaring Mouth of Trump®, the both-sides news media that just wants sensation for hits an views, the over-the-top base fed by Fox and conservative media, etc. All they do is pounce on everything to cloud it all for their own gains.

I think the Democrats are working and building both a case and a political machine and staying out of the news so they can keep the critics quiet and just work to get good results this November. If they are successful and get some more power they can then support the work of Mueller better.

Also, if it is as bad as I believe it is, a united release of Mueller’s report and a more powerful Democratic stance will make it much tougher for Republicans and the conservative media to fight a very comprehensive and critical report on Trump and his transgressions.

Take the little punches now, save up for the later rounds and them hit ‘em with the big roundhouse right knock-out punch. That’s my take. I think it all has to do with this November. This election is going to be very important to this country.

I can’t say for certain what all the Democrats are doing because I am not paying attention to all of them. I focus on the ones here in Kentucky.
As for the ones not in Kentucky, a lot (if not most) of them are not squandering time blathering on TV talk shows. They are holding townhalls, knocking on doors, pounding the pavement (for example, see Beto O’Rourke and Stacey Abrams, just to name two).
And their platforms are not “I’m against Trump”.

There’s no way the media can say this. They can quote a Democrat who says it. And they do quote Adam Schiff. But he’s the only one. It’s not the media’s fault that the rest of the party is sticking with the losing strategy of not talking about any of this,

Is it a losing strategy in this current media? Everything they say now gets twisted by all the media. Things are not normal, Trump gets an awful lot of protection by the way he is covered.

I think staying quiet and working to get elected this November is more important than answering all the insanity. Make it a big November to get some more political power, see how America responds to the reality of Trump and then come out swinging.

One widely criticized aspect of Arkansas’ new rules is that everyone enrolled in Medicaid has to document their work hours through an online portal created by the state — with no option to submit information in person, over the by phone, or by mail.

According to the Census Bureau, Arkansas has the second-lowest rate of home internet access in the nation, only slightly above Mississippi.

When 44 was President, you had a boatload of GOP voices, any quid pro quo now? NOPE. Dems need to find other means of reaching folks if conventional media access is limited (and it surely is being limited), that means things like podcasts, you tube and other media internet outlets, getting themselves “trending” etc…

Its readily apparent that the media (while privately possibly appalling of the Presidency) adores the clicks that he generates, so that leaves them somewhat subservient to his desires. So they’re apparently all-in on revenue not so much on informing the public. They don’t believe that that is their job, it truly has devolved to a massive Tiger Beat on the Potomac industry….

But please, do go on about how black athletes taking a knee to protest police brutality and discrimination is political.

So, put your fist in the air like John Carlos did in 1968. Or go full Wakanda. These snowflakes think it’s about the kneeling.

It’s the goddamned protest act itself. How that manifests itself is irrelevant. Trump wants people thinking the protesters are unamerican because they’re kneeling. That’s jingoistic nationalist bulkshit.

Freepers are on it. Just one of several threads full of credulous commentary with a few skeptics.

Freepers are also all over a report on Gateway Pundit about water conservation law passed here in CA. It manages to turn a goal of a limit of indoor water use to 55 gal. per person per day (outdoor-landscaping use-to be determined later) into “the State will monitor how often you flush your toilet.” For reference, Mr. C. and I use maybe half that amount while using all the water we want. Efficient appliances and low flush toilets go a long, long way in reducing use.

Sarah Sanders won’t say if Trump knows that not a single Eagles player knelt during the National Anthem this past year, despite the president saying that’s what this dispute is about

Schooley
Why is dodging every question still considered a press briefing?

because no one in that room will say:
“these two statements are contradictory. which one is correct?”

or
“that doesn’t answer the question, please answer the question”

and the next one doesnt say “why wont you answer the last question?”
and the next one
and the next one
and the next…..

so, short answer - because the people in the room are allowing it, enabling it, participating in the fiction.

Here’s another story , from Mother Jones, about the Democrats’ response to the Russia scandal:

Donald Trump Is Getting Away With the Biggest Scandal in American History
DAVID CORN June 5, 2018
[…]
In the face of Trump’s fact-free denials, who is reminding the public of the basics—that Russia attacked, and that Trump aided and abetted the operation? If you watch cable news or are addicted to Twitter, you can see Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, engaging in hand-to-hand combat with the Republicans and the forces of Fox News over the Russia probe on practically a daily basis. A few other Democratic members of his committee join the fray when the news cycle permits. But Sen. Mark Warner, (D-Va.), the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, prefers maintaining a lower profile. And there are no other Democratic bigwigs who have assumed the task of addressing the beyond-cable audience and fiercely reiterating and emphasizing the core narrative. When it comes to framing the overarching story, Trump practically has a monopoly.

Most of the state would be a desert except for the Colorado River compact and the irrigation canals built over the past century that irrigate the inland empire and reservoirs in places like Hetch Hetchy that feed into SFO.

Conserving water is an absolute priority not only in CA, but across the nation as water supplies are threatened by pollution (fracking) as well as droughts and climate change.

Reducing use also means lower cost to treat water for consumption and lower sewage costs.

You can get significant savings from going from 3gpf to 1.2gpf. Shorter showers. More efficient laundry.

It’s doable. How you get there is an open question - and how to do it when many are poor and can’t afford to upgrade to newer tech/appliances/fixtures.

Interestingly, those type of toilets are still in operation at one of our local hospitals. The place was originally built in the 1920s and even though it’s been modernized, for some reason, they’ve never replaced those old-school toilets.

Many of the manufacturers now use some version of the Toto flushing systems, so they can get better flushing with less water.

Even a few years difference makes a huge difference.

You can get a better shower with less water too. It’s all doable.

And you can subsidize things like shower head replacements for minimal cost.

Since older showers had no water efficiency ratings, they could do 3gpm or more. In the 90s, the feds set a 2.5 gpm rate. Now, you can get under 2 gpm and have plenty of flow. California is pushing that to 1.8 gpm this year and wants to get bath sink faucets to 1.2 gpm from 2.2. I’d love to get the rate, because I’d spent less on water and natgas to heat water for a water heater (and could conceivably get a smaller water heater out of that deal too!)

or better

I had put up a page expressing my concerns about the care of the detained children. It just occurred to me that putting ID bracelets on them won’t be very effective. THey will inevitably fall off or be pulled off. When somebody comes in at the beginning of their shift, how will they know which bracelet belongs to which child? The kids may give them their names, but babies can’t. They will either not care who is who, or maybe they will have to give them tattoos, or maybe a little subcutaneous chip.

With this group, I think tattoos is the way to go.

I am all for water efficiency, but I draw the line at waterless urinals. I have client that is a capital management firm, and they spend tens of millions of dollars on office space in downtown Boston, building out the most impressive conference room I’ve ever seen, furniture that would make Louis XIV envious and then you walk into the bathroom that has these no flush waterless urinals and it smells like a damn bus terminal bathroom.
