The local election which is most interesting to me is the Congressional district where Car Thief retired.

The lead Republican, Diane Harkey, whose Wiki page reads like an advert (hint: it is), has more than a bit looniness:

Her twitter stream seems to be more about food: twitter.com than politics. She doesn’t mention Trump very much at all.

That sounds about right to me. Alabama is one of the deepest of the deep Red states and outside of a few Urban areas like Mobile, Birmingham, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa the vast majority of the state are Trump loving, God fearing Muricans.

Kevin DeLeon has moved into 2nd place in the Senate primary here in CA.

If he holds that, it means in the general there will not be a Republican candidate.

In general I suppose a one-party state is not a good thing, but until a new party that is not a racist nationalist party can find its way into the American public, I’m fine with the Trump GOP dying out.

Even by their standards, this has been a bad night for BernieBro, Inc., California Division.

Their statewide candidates are off to bad starts. Delaine Eastin, not listed on their page, but whom Wikipedia shows as endorsed by the SF Berniecrats and Our Revolution Ventura County, is in 6th place at 2.6%. Gayle McLaughlin, an independent/ NPP running for Lieutenant Governor, is in 8th place in that race at 3%.

Of their six Congressional candidates, two are currently in position to make their runoffs- in two of California’s five most Republican districts, the 1st (Audrey Denney v. Doug LaMalfa) and the 50th (Ammar Campa-Najjar v. Duncan Hunter). Their candidates in the 25th, 26th, 29th and 39th districts, which include a Green, are all mired in single digits. Indeed, of these six candidates, Denney is doing best at 16%.

In the State Assembly, Anker Patel, who has already lost a special election in the 45th District, is losing the general election. Jovanka Beckles is in 4th place in the 15th District race. At least James Elia will apparently make the runoff… in the 71st District in whitest San Diego County, where GOoPers are outpolling him 68-32.

Genevieve Jones-Wright, Dave Myers, and Monica Montgomery are running for San Diego DA, Sheriff, and City Council. All are losing. Jane Kim? Third in the SF mayoral race. Pam Price? 28 points down running for Alameda County sheriff. Noah Phillips? 30 points down in Sac-Town, but that’s 5 points closer than Milo Fitch running for sheriff. Steve Madrone trails in the race for Humboldt County Supervisor, but narrowly. Penny Newman is third in the race for Riverside County Supervisor.

Twenty candidates, three runoffs, zero likely wins.

I’m of the opinion that Democrats should stop doing what isn’t working, a.) because it isn’t working, and b.) because it enables non-idiot commentators like Jon Stewart to say, with some justification, that Democrats “don’t give a f*ck about Russia”, which in turn empowers the aforementioned idiots and partisan hacks.

And just to show there is an alternative way for things to work, do a Google search for “idea of America is at risk.” You’ll see a number of references to Adam Schiff’s statement “The very idea of America is at risk,” and no one calling it “Trump derangement syndrome” or what have you.

I disputed those articles regarding your conclusions when you posted them in the ealier threads. They aren’t even close to proving a point about Democratic messaging like the Columbia Journalism Review study cited in the Vox article I posted. They didn’t document anything even remotely persuasive IMO.
Charles posted the article because it’s a good one. i didn’t see him pushing a Dem messaging narrative with it. That article is so much more than your highlights (which I disputed) and deserves it’s shine. Ted Lieu fighting every day the same way Schiff is, was a pretty glaring omission.

After 42 flips, the Alabama Senate, PA etc….what exactly isn’t working?
Regarding Russia, the GOP Congress has to be the one to act. It’s not even the elephant in the room. It’s been said and continues to be said. Everyone knows this and knows what it can mean for us because they aren’t acting.

As Dangerman pointed out, the investigation continues. Mueller hasn’t released a report but there is always Dem push back on leaks from the Trump side and what they are trying to do with the propaganda. The Trump regime is aided by the media who is flat-footed with respect to our new reality and that deserves more of your attention.

Dems have also put on record the House and Senate investigations. I’ve watched enough of the hearings to know who is fighting this and who isn’t.

The Republicans must act. They will not.

The media representation issue for Dems which naturally extends to minority representation (because we have most of them) isn’t even new. It’s a bigger deal now obviously but that bias has been in place. No Dems invited last week for Sunday shows. Why??

Now even if a good number of high profile Dems were dedicated to Trump-Russia solely what about the other side of the Dem messaging attack that says we shouldn’t focus on him? They say we should not be the anti-Trump party, only focusing on him.
That doesn’t make sense either. What I see makes sense and Kamala illustrated that well. They are touching on all of it. Equal rights and Puerto Rico are important as hell too for example! Politics is local is freaking time tested. We need to flip the house!

If the media doesn’t cover the messaging then one needs to re-adjust their focus. We can do better at least, even if they won’t. Acting like the ‘Democrats have no message’ or ‘Democrats don’t fight Trump’ narratives are real and not indicative of the same systemic bullshit that got us here is a real blind spot.

You have to dig way down into the story to get to the truth:

Iowa results: Far more Democrats turned out than Republicans for the race.

In IA-1 and IA-3, the Democratic candidates for the election will be women, Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne. If either woman is elected, she will become the first Congresswoman ever elected from Iowa. (The first woman ever elected to a federal position was Joni Ernst in 2014.)

Incumbent Rep. Rod Blum in IA-1 ran unopposed and got 14,000+ votes. Ms. Finkenauer ran against three candidates and got 29,000+ (the total for IA-1 Democrats was 44,134). Republican turnout might have been depressed with only one choice to vote for in IA-1 through 3.

Incumbent Representative Dave Loebsack (D) took twice as many votes in IA-3 as Dave Young (R). Cindy Axne in IA-2 took more votes (running against three candidates) than Christopher Peters (R)

The only Republican House race with a competitor was IA-4, where Steve King defeated his female challenger 27,000+ to 9,000+. Three Democrats ran in IA-4, gaining a total of 28,339 votes; JD Schloten won that contest.

Numbers like that show IA-1 and IA-2 are flippable, and possibly IA-4, if interest in the General Election is high. I would dearly love to see Blum (R-cypher) and King (R-acist) ousted from the state next door.

My concern is this sends the message to judges to throw the book at all criminal defendants, when we genuinely have too many people being sent to prison. OTOH, judges do need to take sexual violence more seriously.

My concern is this sends the message to judges to throw the book at all criminal defendants, when we genuinely have too many people being sent to prison. OTOH, judges do need to take sexual violence more seriously.

The judge’s whole defence of his position was “well, you know, we don’t want to ruin a good [white] kid’s chances” (and it turned out they both went to the same university).

That sort of cronyism needs to be ousted from the bench.

In King’s district, due to the last redrawing of the district maps, wherein Iowa lost a US Rep, Story county was added to King’s district. It’s home of a very large university. The primary in June means most students are away.

Now, many students in November may remain registered in their home counties/states, but there will be many 18/19 year olds voting for the first time, and they will be voting in Story county. I don’t know if that will be enough to swing the district or not, but it ought to help.

Well, considering the last judge in California was recalled in 1932, this doesn’t seem to be a big trend.

The locals were really pissed about that verdict in a rape case. The MeToo movement probably also contributed to the judge’s ouster.

Rape is a serious and violent crime. Serious and violent crimes should get long sentences (throwing the book at him as noted above).

We had 5 ballot propositions which ought not have been ballot propositions, if the legislature wasn’t so slow. By nature deliberative bodies are slow, I know, but still, look at the ballot propositions:

All of this could have, should have, been done by the legislature.

None of the results are close, and no one expected them to be.

Anyway, come fall, the supermajority has a chance to appear once again. Yet, I have never seen where it’s really made any difference.

Unless mail ballots changes things, Duncan the Lesser’s opponent will be Ammar Campa-Najjar.

Given the make-up of the district, all those Christians (reminder - Hunter’s district is the original home of the Institute for Creation Research) will take one look at that name and believe Ammar is a terrorist.

It was election night around the nation, and Democrats did quite well for themselves. They got some top notch candidates, and women again led the way all around the nation.

So why are leading media outlets and punditocracies claiming that Democrats escaped with a victory or that they “avoided disaster in California?”

Democrats had a strong showing. They even turned out in New Jersey, where an awful Democrat in Bob Menendez was rebuked by voters and didn’t get a huge margin of victory.

Yet Menendez got more than 50% more votes as his soon to be GOP challenger Bob Hugin.

In fact, Menendez’s challeger, Lisa McCormick, got nearly as many votes as Hugin did. That tells you something about the turnout in NJ. It says that Democrats are engaged and know what is at stake.

They also know that enabling Hugin to win in November will further protect Trump’s regressive agenda.

But, I did see some comments about women doing very well in the primaries. Hopefully a bunch of them get elected.

I’ve often commented I’d like to see women be the majority in the U.S. Congress. I think they could lend a restorative hand this country needs, especially on the social end of things.

Maybe they’d also be way more realistic about our standing in the world and manage to work out a way to end the mess in the Middle East.

For sure, men, especially Republican men, have mucked things up pretty good. And I say that as a man.

Running around the White House talking to everyone about pardons is not normal by any stretch. And you have to ask of all things why is he so hung up on pardons? Recently, a Democratic senator asked for Trump Jr. to return to the Senate and testify when it became clear he lied about the Trump campaign’s outreach to foreign powers. Senator Chris Coons (D-CT) invoked the possibility Trump Jr. violated a law against lying to Congress, which is punishable with up to 5 years imprisonment.

Daddy would definitely be firing up the pardon pen. How would this one play out. Not really asking, I know it’s nothing.

It’s actually not even that complex. Trump lacks the ability to reason that through - he literally doesn’t think that he’s done anything wrong, because he doesn’t think that deeply. It is literally nothing more than the fact that he’s getting attention, most of it positive, for pardoning people, so he wants to play with this new toy that has people fawning over him on FOX.

I was actually have those same thoughts while I was driving down I-75 (lots of Trump country) from Traverse City. Seeing this country through blissful ignorance, you would have no idea that we have an ignorant tyrant occupying the White House.
