Beautiful. I almost posted a version of “I want to see the bright lights tonight” so this is especially appreciated.

Though I’d still rather a nice mid 60’s Bonneville… ;)

I was also CL’d a bit last thread. Here’s what I felt was important to say:

re: #148 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Ontario has fallen. This is like being in occupied France in the fall of 1940 and hearing that the Germans have captured Dover.

We will not surrender.

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

Winston Churchill, 4 June 1940, the second of the three critical speeches.

Not to mention that I’d reckon from a statistical POV, older people are more likely to have pre-existing medical conditions (that’s just the price we pay for getting older).

Older people, IIRC, are a rather large segment of the GOP’s voting base.

So………is the GOP trying to kill off their voters or something?

That’d make a good mid-term campaign commercial, actually - “Hey, uhh, ya know, Trump and the Republican Party? Yeah…….they’re trying to kill you. Seriously. I don’t know why, but for some reason, they want you dead.”

Our county party released this video today. What do you think? (I had nothing to do with production, so if you hate it, don’t worry about hurting my feelings.) I kinda like it (although I think the cuts are a bit too fast). Some of my buds hate it—some love it. I think it’s a good message and sort of uplifting. And at least they’re doing something.

I can’t shake the feeling that a lot of these people waiting around for the Rapture are gonna be left mighty disappointed when that doesn’t happen.

I say that with a good deal of confidence because the whole idea of the Rapture is essentially mistaken doctrine; created by Darby and popularized by Scofield (IIRC). It actually has no real basis in Christian eschatological teachings - yet the idea seems to have infected a broad segment of Christianity, mostly fundamentalists/evangelicals.

re: #12 The Ghost of a Flea

That’s the beauty of the Rapture—

You don’t have to do anything, the world getting worse is a kind of justice, and most people are foreordained to die horribly. Other people’s pain and suffering, the arbitrary cruelty of nature…these things are now fulfillment of prophecy. You can’t stop them because they are of God.

Every bad thing you fan into a massive horror is progress towards an ultimate victory.

Right now, that’s a comparatively small butcher’s bill: a toll of Dead Arabs, dead Palestinians, dead Israelis. The Rapture-ready squat on websites tracking wars and disasters to compare to the seals in Revelations.

But eventually they’re not going to get their magic teleport off the rock and they’re going to start doubling down.

I DON”T CARE about the fucking flag. It is nothing but a piece of cloth. I could wipe my ass with it and it would not change. The Constitution, OTOH, is where our hopes and dreams exist. The flag only means **it to scum like you who have utterly no ethics. Now either grow up or shut up. I don’t care which. I think it has come to that. I have coined the term “Republi-Cong” for the vigilante gangs and half-ass militias we might have to deal with. The most common objection, that “it makes us just like them” is nonsense. Our purpose is not a delusional attempt to defeat the Constitutional armed forces, much less a genocidal pogrom against “others,” but to protect ourselves from criminal gangs who happen to believe that their atrocities are authorized by God.

Veterans don’t own the flag. That flag belongs to all Americans. Every last person in my family served in the military supporting the Constitution, which protects the right to protest.

She can take a hike with her fake patriotism. If she’s so concerned about the military, I used to be a Navy recruiter and she’s still young enough to enlist. I can point her in the right direction.

On the other hand, I’m not sure I would want to inflict a wingnut like that on the Navy.

I happen to agree that things are quite dire. But I am hoping to find another way before we get to that. Oh, they will—guaranteed. I think they will be surprisingly (to them) ineffectual, but there will be considerable bloodshed. But collective action is what it takes to discredit a movement in America. The Vietnam War protests have discredited the Left for 50 years.

The Vietnam-era Left killed, what? One guy? By accident? Meanwhile, right-wing terrorists have killed hundreds of people, but as long as they’re all LONE WOLVES!! nobody cares.

As soon as the gun-humpers start forming up and taking collective action, I think that’s going to get old real quick, and they’re going to get slapped down pretty easily.

But finally we’ll have something to bitch about, the way the Right has been re-litigating the Vietnam War for two generations….

Of course. Because that’s what they have always been about.

I like the Czech laws because they give us a real regulation system without that kind of crap. Know about firearms? Know the laws? Know the first aide you’ll need if you shoot? Can you pass a basic sanity test? Then you get a “Must Issue” license.

That is exactly what the 2nd amendment says we require.

My bipolar would be considered pre-existing. My medications (except for one) are relatively cheap, but God forbid I go round the twist and have to be hospitalized.

And what about genetic predispositions? Both my sons are at high risk for bipolar, as they already have ADHD and their mom’s family is rife with it. Would a transition to bipolar be considered pre-existing?

The whole thing is madness.

This is one of those days when I need to walk away from the internet and go hang out with my cats.

I could very easily such groups committing (or attempting to commit) purges or massacres against their perceived enemies - especially if/when they feel they’re losing control.

Basically, if Trump loses re-election in 2020, yeah, I could see these groups trying to start some shit.

I don’t think so, except for a handful of loonies like we have already seen, such as the Vegas shooter who turned out to be an anti-government terrorist. Most of these people have high incomes and lead comfortable lives; they may talk a big game, but they aren’t going to give their lives up to join terror cells and become fugitives.

On the plus side, pig is gonna be hella cheap for a long time.

Unfortunately, lots of pig farmers (or whatever they’re called), are going to go under.

As will many who farm corn, soybeans, etc. for export.

At which point, ADM will swoop in and buy all the land for pennies on the dollar.

Woo hoo.

There would be nothing illegal about a red state mosque arming its members, buying its own shooting range, and fortifying its facilities with bunkers and sandbags as a precaution against a wingnut “open carry” demonstration getting out of hand. Imagine the reaction if one actually did so though. The entire right-wing would go bug-fuck crazy and demand a B-52 strike in response.

Won’t happen. When the Republicans kill Obamacare and go back to the old rule you will not see any movement towards single payer because the Republican 24/7 Bullshit Machine will repeat the message that Government health care is a failure and they will point out that Obamacare was a disaster.

And the masses will act just like Kentucky voters who cast even more votes for the GOP after Bevin killed Kynect.

We cannot save America. Only the rest of the world can do that by dumping the dollar as the reserve currency, shorting Treasury notes and applying increasing economic sanctions.

I got a feeling that the G7 is going to get real nasty as Trump finds that he’s either alone or only Japan sort of sides with him on some things. I would not be surprised to see Merkel kick out Grenell during the meeting.

Bars can refuse service to Trump supporters, judge says

A judge in New York City has ruled in favor of a bar that kicked someone out for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. According to the New York Post, Philadelphian Greg Piatek was booted from The Happiest Hour in January of 2017, just after Donald Trump’s inauguration, because he was wearing a red MAGA cap.

So the 31-year-old sued the place, claiming the incident “offended his sense of being American,” according to the lawsuit. But according to The Happiest Hour’s lawyer, Elizabeth Conway, political beliefs are not protected from discrimination by law - only religious beliefs are.

I’m still convinced I made the right decision by never dealing with Facebook. Facebookerati might want to check to see if Facebook really fixed their privacy settings after this bug exposed all new posts from roughly 14 million people over a period of two weeks.

Your Private Facebook Posts May Have Been Public For Days (Huffington Post)

Facebook has had another privacy mishap, this time announcing a recent bug that may have caused up to 14 million users’ new posts to appear publicly even if they had previously chosen a more private default setting such as “friends only.”

The company said Thursday that over several days last month ― from May 18 to May 27 ― a bug had caused affected users’ new posts to automatically be set to “public,” overriding their usual privacy settings, which may have restricted who could view their posts and photos.

The company said it had fixed the bug, changing the settings of all of new posts published over that period back to the affected users’ previous settings. The bug didn’t affect older posts, the company said.

“We’d like to apologize for this mistake,” Facebook’s chief privacy officer, Erin Egan, said in a statement.

They have begun notifying users who may have been affected so they can review their privacy settings.

It’s the sound of white privilege feeling the pinch, of “alpha males” looking at their positions of privilege being torn down and not knowing how to react besides impotent rage, of the “working class” dealing with the systematic dismantling of everything they and their parents worked for by blaming “those people” rather than themselves for voting for hucksters and robber-barons because of fear of “those people.”

“This is how you got Trump”

We fail to properly teach civics and government
We fail to properly teach history, science or critical thinking
We fail to teach people how to use media, especially social media as a source of information on politics and current events
We have an electoral system that over-represents sparsely populated rural areas at the expense of more densely populated areas
We have a lack of transparency in who is offering financial support to candidates (read Citizens’ United)

That is how we got Trump

I can only guess that -ize is still a productive ending but “advertise” had its spelling fossilized earlier? American spelling would try to spread the “z” back to the dividing line where it became a grammatical element, but they might be wrong about its exact timing.

I just recall a German client insisting it must be “advertize” in American English BECAUSE THAT IS THE RULE, to which I had to point out that for any “rule” of English grammar, there are generally more exceptions to the rule than examples of it.

As soon as the gun-humpers start forming up and taking collective action, I think that’s going to get old real quick, and they’re going to get slapped down pretty easily.

Retired Gen. Remember “Jade Helm”? Or Ebola coming across the southern border? Hayden, who served as NSA director and head of the CIA, examines how Russian bots propagated conspiracies that originated in the U.S.

“Deep State” is also a big catch-all: we forget that our government needs professionals to function, and their careers must necessarily extend beyond any single president’s administration. They have to make sure that procedures and institutions remain intact and cannot be too heavily influenced or affected by partisan considerations.

He most definitely thinks commuting the sentence of the Black grandmother to please reality star Kim is gonna be a big hit.

Donald Trump Called Asbestos Poisoning a Mob-Led Conspiracy, Now His EPA Won’t Evaluate Asbestos Already in Homes

he Environmental Protection Agency will not consider the health risks and impacts of asbestos already in the environment when evaluating the dangers associated with the chemical compound, Scott Pruitt, the agency’s head, quietly announced last week. That means asbestos used in tiles, piping and adhesives throughout homes and businesses in the United States will remain largely unchecked and unaccounted for. Nearly 15,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-related diseases, but President Donald Trump has called the substance “100 percent safe, once applied.”

In his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback, Trump argued that the association of the chemical with health risks was part of a mob-created conspiracy. “I believe that the movement against asbestos was led by the mob, because it was often mob-related companies that would do the asbestos removal. Great pressure was put on politicians, and as usual, the politicians relented,” he wrote.

re: #176 Backwoods_Sleuth

The headline sounds a little worse than what it is, I think:

Under a law passed by Congress during the final year of the Obama administration, the E.P.A. was required for the first time to evaluate hundreds of potentially toxic chemicals and determine if they should face new restrictions, or even be removed from the market. The chemicals include many in everyday use, such as dry-cleaning solvents, paint strippers and substances used in health and beauty products like shampoos and cosmetics.

So it sounds as if they were still in the stage of finalizing the rule of the legislation, rather than upending a long-standing practice.

Don’t get me wrong, still sounds like a crappy decision, but it doesn’t amount to a reversal of something the EPA had been doing for a long time.

The human truths of travel and food were the basic foundation of his show. With his skill as a chef and style as an interviewer, all the right pieces were in place. Over the years his production crew got better, got promoted from within. I loved that he browbeat CNN to pony up the bigger bucks to shoot the Rome episode on real film. That casual style brought out insights and candor from his guests. I guess he will always be most famous for the episode where he had lunch with Obama. One of the few times he was a little visibly starstruck.

Woo hoo.

I remember a similar state of affairs in the 1980s. Different triggers. Same result.

It was personal/we went down.

And I am so shook this morning with the suicide of Anthony Bourdain. He inspired and irritated me. He was the same age as my brother when he committed suicide. Rats….

I lived in Ontario for 24 years. The province goes through cycles just like states back bounce back and forth between Dem and GOP governors.

Ontario is also like California in some respects in that some areas are heavily Liberal while others are staunchly conservative.

It’s also really big.

Point is, we’ve survived shitty admins before and we can do it again.

The last time we had a so-called ‘conservative’ (They’re not) government here in Ontario I got to be homeless.

I’m hoping that won’t happen this time because my housing is a municipal responsibility. I do expect my disability to be reduced though, and a work requirement added.

I figure we’ll end up like Kansas

I know that chefs like Prudhomme and Emeril came before him, but Bourdain was the first ‘celebrity chef’ I could relate to. A little younger than me, unashamedly in love with The Ramones, with that borderline fucked-up New York sense of humor.

I’m going to Brooklyn to see the Bowie exhibit and get all this out of my head for a while. RIP, Bourdain, you magnificent ambassador.

I normally don’t get into the chef shows but I am an avid traveler and Bourdain appealed to that in me. Part of the fun of travel for me is not just seeing places that you only see in movies or read about but trying new food. It’s probably one of the biggest bonds I share with my closest brother in age. Our youngest brother is a little more conservative when it comes to new food but when it comes to him and I, we’re all in.

I suspect it is for the same reason I tried to take my own life.

It appears you are going to die. All that’s left is how. You can die in one of the myriad horrible ways your imagination dreams up, or quiet, clean and quick.

In my case it was just after I became homeless. It seemed to me I could die in one of the many ways a homeless person could die in a February night in Canada, or hang myself.

In America, and I suspect much of the West, the dichotomy between our mythology of individual freedom and the reality of being producing-consuming economic agents is one many intelligent people can only resolve by leaving this life.

So much for the argument that younger Whites aren’t racist. I see no evidence of that, tbh.

In my 40-odd years of sitting next to UC Berkeley and shooing the younguns off my lawn, I have seen more and more casual intermingling of all races, starting from my college days, when it was practically nonexistent. So there’s that.

Racism as a percentage of an age group is about the same no matter what the age. But, as you note, I’m seeing more kids of different races hanging out together. Which hopefully means they’ll have an easier time marginalizing the bigots than we did/do.

CNN had an expert on who rightly pointed toward the economic crisis over the last ten years and accessibility to guns contributing to spike in suicide, but a correlation that hasn’t been mentioned as far as I have seen is our 15-year-long war and the toll it is taking on soldiers and vets (that is also correlated with econ/gun issues, of course). That is also a significant contributing factor to the alarming rise in suicides.

The increase and reasons for it probably aligns with those for the increase in mass shootings. It’s just that Americans in general are going to shoot themselves as opposed to going on a killing rampage.

It’s frustrating how we have this stigma. I remember when Robin Williams killed himself and people called him selfish. I hate that word for someone who takes their own life. As someone who has suffered from some depression issues though anxiety’s mainly been my thing, I’m not trying to be selfish. I’m in pain. If we could see mental issues as no different from physical aches, maybe we could do something here.

I agree 100% - but I know full well there’s a whole lotta people out there who are genuinely frightened at the progress that’s been made thus far. They feel that their position at the apex of the social pyramid is now threatened - and their sense of identity, their very sense of being, is under siege.

Well, the chances of the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting next week in Dallas turning into a first-class dumpster fire have lessened:

Under fire, controversial Southern Baptist leader Paige Patterson has pulled out of giving key sermon at upcoming convention

The article also includes a letter sent by Patterson to the current head of the SBC, where he withdraws and states his beliefs. I’m going to post this here and just point out that Patterson’s gospel is pervers when the first thing he says he believes in is complementarianism. Just to rant, but Jesus didn’t live and die so that men like Patterson could be patriarchs.

I remain a proponent of God’s plan and purpose for marriage as the union of one man and one woman in lifetime commitment as delineated in Genesis 2 and 3; in the biblical, complementary role assignments for men and women as given in Scripture (1 Cor. 11; 1 Tim. 2); in the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture in every syllable (2 Tim. 3:16-17); in the task of world-wide evangelism since Christ died for all and has invited all to trust Him as Savior (1 Jn. 2:2); in the protection by the strong of all who are weaker (Is. 40:11); and in calling for absolute justice for every human being (Mic. 6:8).

washingtonpost.com

This was announced by Scott Colter, whose wife Sharayah stepped on my last church nerve last week by posting documents probably stolen by Patterson from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2003. The intent was to discredit a woman who said Patterson told her not to report her rape. Instead, it stoked the dumpster fire even hotter.

The whole thing is still a cluster and I would advise women to just simply walk out of their Southern Baptist churches, because it’s obvious that the most important thing to these guys is not Jesus, but whether they can subjugate women.

The way I’ve been looking at more and more is that while I’m proud to be an American, humanity is really what unites us. So yeah I can legitimately say I feel more of a bond with people who may not be my countrymen or women but share my belief in humanity above all.

The problem is the synonym for complacent: content. Content is what a lot of people want. They’re not looking to write the next great novel, earn a Nobel prize, or even cook the world’s most perfect steak. They don’t really want tomorrow to be much different than today. They’re the hardest to get to realize that things are changing.

Thus the need for my mantra. Forever, I’m afraid.

A lot of people hate so called SJWs because they see them as busy bodies but the way I look at is this.
An attack on transgender rights is an attack on my rights even though I’m not trans.

An attack on immigrants is an attack on me even though I’m not an immigrant.

Racism against black people by cops attacks me even though I am white.

A lot of people try to cop out of being called racist by claiming to be color blinded but color blindness is a cop out. I’m always going to see the differences in skin color, religion, accent, etc but where I and we grow is where we those differences as not defining that person. That was King’s dream. He didn’t want people to act like color or ethnicity wasn’t a thing but he did want people to see people as people first.

I like to ask what exactly makes “social” justice so allegedly contemptible in their view, then watch the ‘splaining and shuffling feet.

ELIDA, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say sheriff’s deputies have seized a military-style AR-15 carbine and 500 rounds of ammunition from a former student who threatened to shoot up an Ohio high school this coming September.

The Lima News reports four Elida high school students reported the threat late Wednesday, leading Allen County sheriff’s deputies to arrest 19-year-old Tristan Ascura, of Lima, early Thursday. He’s been charged with inducing panic.

The Sheriff’s Office says Ascura told the students to avoid going to school Sept. 1 because he was going to “shoot it up.”

School officials say Ascura dropped out of Elida High School in early April. Superintendent Joel Mengerink says the four students acted heroically.

Court records don’t indicate whether Ascura has an attorney.

Elida is roughly 85 miles (137 kilometers) south of Toledo.

“In essence, these are sanctions,” Putin said of the tariffs. “What, did they ‘annex Crimea,’ as many of our partners say?”

NPR had a piece on Muslim food workers and Ramadan. One of them said something to the effect that it was actually good to work feeding others because it let him reflect more on his fast. None of them objected to other people eating in their presence. It is presumably harder to fast here than in a Muslim country where everyone is fasting, but I assume they adjust.

Krauthammer is dying.

A note to readers

I have been uncharacteristically silent these past ten months. I had thought that silence would soon be coming to an end, but I’m afraid I must tell you now that fate has decided on a different course for me.

In August of last year, I underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in my abdomen. That operation was thought to have been a success, but it caused a cascade of secondary complications — which I have been fighting in hospital ever since. It was a long and hard fight with many setbacks, but I was steadily, if slowly, overcoming each obstacle along the way and gradually making my way back to health.

However, recent tests have revealed that the cancer has returned. There was no sign of it as recently as a month ago, which means it is aggressive and spreading rapidly. My doctors tell me their best estimate is that I have only a few weeks left to live. This is the final verdict. My fight is over.

Have you tried diatomaceous earth? It kills crawling bugs by shredding their bodies. You can buy it at Home Depot.

Also, disrupt their scent trail. Kill them, wipe them up, and then clean their trail-preferably where they come into the house. Windex, Lysol, whatever.

That sounds really cruel when you put it like that.

BREAKING: For more than a year, the Florida Dept of Agriculture failed to conduct background checks on tens of thousands of concealed weapons permit applications

we really need to attack this as a clear violation of the 2nd Amendment, namely the first clause about “well regulated”

The commas mean “A well regulated Militia” is separate and distinct from “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms”
But, the comma does count as a separation with “shall not be infringed” because “tree of liberty/blood of tyrants” or some such nonsense

While in Pakistan, many Muslims get triggered when they see anyone eating in public. There was a good Op-Ed in The Express Tribune about that, which was very spot on. I’ll be sure to link it when I find it (kind of hard to do at work at the moment).

Speaking of protein boost, thank you for not following the picnic table shot with one of a plate of fried eggs lately.

Do you find the juxtapositioning somehow macabre? We just don’t do full on breakfasts very often, and almost never for actual breakfast - more often for an easy, fast supper. Mmm… pancakes, hash browns, sausages and eggs, French toast, huevos rancheros, frittatas!

A little macabre, but it is silly of me. I eat eggs (not in front of any birds…) and I watch birds raid the nests of other birds. They do seem to wait until hatching before raiding, but that’s beside the point.

Post what you wish. The food always looks good.

Dead thread, I know, but hey. That’s a wonderful version of 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, definitely better than Richard Thompson’s original. For my money, the best I have ever heard was Richard solo at Hardly Strictly a few years back — and I just found it on Youtube!
